OF ‘PROMISED LAND’ ON ABC Your “Promised Land” character, Joe Sandoval, is a strong-willed vineyard operator. How do you think his professional approach translates to his personal life?

What’s been interesting is to deal with those moments when he’s like, “The way I used to deal with this doesn’t work anymore.” That’s particularly interesting when it comes to parenting and children, and a big dynamic in our show is the multigenerational aspect. You really see change happening in front of you with adult children; their way of living perhaps challenges us to look at things a little differently or, dare I say, to compromise for the sake of being happy. Logically, a lot of wine is consumed in “Promised Land.” What’s actually in the glasses while you’re doing those scenes?
Lots of colored water, lots of grape juice! It’s a relatively short scene, I don’t mind a rush of juice – but if it’s a long scene with a lot of characters, I’m the first to ask for the water. They’re constantly refreshing the bottles and our glasses. It’s a prop-heavy show. We have a lot of party scenes as well that involve tons of extras, but that’s something that’s beautiful about our show ... the festive, celebratory expressions of life by people who know how to have a good time. How satisfying is it to be part of a series with a principally Latinx creative team?
It’s very gratifying to be part of a show that’s reflective of what this country really looks like, and what the world really looks like in terms of representation. It really is a dream of mine. I used to look at the TV and wonder where “we” were. That’s what prompted me to start a theater company. There are many families in this world that are made up of many different people, and I think we show that really well here.
