As “The Chase” returns with new episodes to start the new year, has it gotten easier for you to fire questions that frequently have tonguetwisting words?
It probably hasn’t gotten easier, but with anything you do over and over, you get better at what you need to prepare or work on. I just put my efforts and energy where I need to, so I’m a better planner now. There was a river in Michigan (with a name) that literally was like three lines long .... and don’t ask me to say it twice! I got it once, and that was it. Has your comfort in bantering with the “Chasers,” the trivia experts whom the contestants compete against, increased?
First of all, they were great from the start. I always wanted big brothers – and I don’t think they’re old enough to be my older brothers, and I have one brother in real life – but these guys have become that antagonistic kind of brother, in the best way. I like to poke the bear and tease, and they dish it right back. This time around, I requested to get more time together with them off the set ... because naturally, the more you know people, the more chemistry and the more jokes there are with them. That’s when I’m at my best, and with every passing day, I get better with them. How have you found the COVID-19-related protocols in making “The Chase”?
This show has only been on during the pandemic, so from the first moment we started shooting it, it had every protocol. I love it because it keeps us all safe, but I do long for the time when there’s more normalcy. We’re not supposed to touch each other, and it gets hard because there’s a natural human response (to someone winning or losing the game), and the distance is the unnatural part.
