This year, under unprecedented times due to the pandemic, we felt it was even more important than ever to focus on what makes our community GREAT – Our local businesses, their employees.

This magazine is our annual look at the local business community. We give our local businesses the opportunity to have an article written about their business so they can tell our readers what has been going on in their company.

A Promising Future for a Newly Formed Regional Health Network.

Mother Teresa once said, “…we can all do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.” Together, we can do more for our community, and we look to the future with great anticipation.

As of January 1, 2021, St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley and Illinois Valley Community Hospital (IVCH) in Peru finalized arrangements to consolidate their healthcare operations to form a regional health network.

Aaron K. Alton, President & CEO of SMP Health System stated, “We are honored to have such dedicated community leaders represented on the Board of Directors of St. Margaret’s Health. Their leadership will be invaluable as our hospitals move forward together to care for communities across the Illinois Valley.”

With this new network, comes new names – St. Margaret’s Hospital is now St. Margaret’s Health - Spring Valley and IVCH is St. Margaret’s Health - Peru. Even though the names have changed, you can rest assured that you can expect the same compassionate care from our physicians and medical staff that you have always relied on.

We expect this process to be completed within two years.”

After receiving approval from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board (IHFSRB) on the proposed affiliation November 1st, 2020, St. Margaret’s and IVCH began the integration planning process. This included the creation of a new Board of Directors. The Board will provide oversight and guidance to the newly combined integrated health system.

Unytite operates throughout pandemic For most companies, January 2020 was the last truly “normal “month before the World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus (covid-19) outbreak a global pandemic, ultimately changing the way companies conducted business. As an industry leader in the manufacture of structural nuts and bolts in the Illinois Valley for the past 31 years and being recognized for high-quality, 100 percent American-made structural fasteners, Unytite was considered an essential business and continued to operate during the pandemic. The need remained for structural fasteners used to build and maintain infrastructures such as hospitals and bridges, currently under construction throughout the US. There were also many other industries that needed to remain operational and were deemed essential, such

as construction, farming, oil and gas, along with the automotive industry. All these industries were in need of Unytite’s steel products.

As Unytite continued to operate during the pandemic, the health and well-being of our employees became a top critical task for management. Unytite implemented safety protocols in an attempt to safeguard everyone against covid19. City of Mendota The Imagine Illinois Avenue project’s goal was to upgrade and beautify Illinois Avenue. Upgrades were done to the sanitary sewer, storm sewer and water main services. The street and sidewalks were replaced from Washington to Jefferson Street and other items that were added to the streetscape included stamped colored concrete, new street lights, decorative park benches and trash receptacles, as well as landscaping.

The Mendota Gardening Club worked with the city of Mendota to purchase and plant trees along Illinois

Avenue. Hydrangea trees were planted on both sides of the street. In addition to the trees, the Gardening Club also planted 5,000 daffodil bulbs in the 10 flower beds on Illinois Avenue. The bulbs were a mixture of four different types of daffodils and they will bloom in four different waves from early to late spring. 100 allium bulbs were also planted. The bulbs will be a purple flower that grows when the daffodils are finished growing. The daffodils are dedicated to longtime Gardening Club member Jim Armstrong, who recently passed away.

Co., the oldest manufacturing firm in Mendota, can trace its roots in the area back to the turn of the 20th century, although the company history goes even farther back than that. A new farm bill signed into law in December included the reclassification of hemp from a controlled substance to an agricultural product. Hemp that is harvested for CBD is used therapeutically for a variety of medical conditions. Proponents claim it is a natural anti-inflammatory that can relieve chronic pain and help fight everything from arthritis to anxiety.

The business is owned by Dustin Delpivo, of Peru.

The language legalizing the cultivation and sale of industrial hemp defines it as cannabis that contains less than 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects.

“There’s a misconception that this is pot-related, but it’s hemp-derived, and it won’t get you high,” Delpivo said.

The franchise puts a big emphasis on education, he said. The store is set up like a bar, where customers can grab a stool and sample the products. A big difference in the product line is how it’s delivered, which will go a long way in determining how quickly it works.

“There is a cream that people say starts to work in 10 to 15 minutes,” Delpivo said. “The vaping products can work instantly, and the oils might take an hour or hour and a half. Some peak in a few days, but everyone metabolizes differently.”

Products also come in the form of edibles, gel caps, coffees and teas. In addition to pain relief, there are body lotions and other award winning beauty products.

Some are made especially for pets.

“We have award winning pet treats that can be used for things like inflammation, anxiety or itching from aller-

gies,” Delpivo said.

Illinois Cement Receives Industry Awards Springfield, IL - Demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability, employee safety and health, the environment, communities where they mine, and the industry, Illinois Cement in LaSalle has been recognized with numerous awards by the Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers (IAAP).

Because of efforts undertaken by the company and its employees to demonstrate corporate citizenship and support community organizations like the Illinois Valley Public Shelter, Illinois Cement will receive a Community Relations award from the IAAP. By providing previously mined land and ongoing financial contributions towards the development of LaSalle’s Rotary Park, this project remains a premier example of mined land reclamation benefiting local communities.

A Gold level Certificate of Achievement in Environmental Excellence was awarded to the mine and plant for having successfully demonstrated efforts to comply with the multitude of Federal, State, and local regulations concerning the protection of our air, water, and land thereby creating a sustainable future while enhancing the public’s perception of the industry.

IAAP member companies and their employees must meet specific health and safety criteria that go beyond federal Mine Safety and Health Administration requirements to qualify for four levels of Rock Solid safety awards: Bronze, Silver, Gold and the highest award Rock Solid Excellence in Safety. “By rewarding our industry’s leaders, member companies are encouraged and being recognized for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone at the mine site and in nearby communities,” said Dan Eichholz, IAAP Director.

The Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers is the trade association serving the aggregate and industrial mineral mining industry in Illinois for more than fifty years. Award winning companies will be recognized at the IAAP’s annual convention on December 15th in Springfield, Illinois.

IVCIL’S FIVE CORE SERVICES ARE: Information and Referral — We offer guidance in locating services and products.

Advocacy — We work together with our partners to eliminate barriers, allowing people with disabilities to fully participate in society.

Taylor Johnson is a textbook example. Today, the former IVCC student is a cardiac ICU nurse at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

The daughter of Butch and LeeAnn Johnson of Tonica completed her prerequisites at IVCC in 2017-18 and was an IVCC Foundation scholarship recipient. After IVCC, she went on to earn a bachelor’s in nursing and recently passed her nursing board examination. She credits the “strong foundation” she built at IVCC for placing her on a path to success. A lot has changed at Steinberg’s Furniture over the past 133 years, but one thing has remained the same. The family-owned business remains committed to customer service.

“It starts with our sales staff,” said Bruce Steinberg, the fourth generation of his family to operate the furniture store. “Their income is not dependent on commissions, so it creates a helpful, non-pressured atmosphere for the customer. Inman Electric Motors celebrates 54 years Inman Electric Motors is proud to be celebrating its 54th year in business in the Illinois Valley. Inman Electric provides motor rebuilding and rewinding services for power generation plants, petrochemical plants, oil refineries, steel mills, automotive and heavy equipment manufacturers, machine tool companies, cement and sand plants and other industrial manufacturers. They routinely provide services for customers within a 200-mile radius from their facility in LaSalle, IL. As a recognized leader in industrial electric motor repair and sales, Inman Electric Motors Inc. continues to work to expand its facility and improve its motor repair capabilities for their customers.

The company’s repair facility and warehouses cover 75,000 square feet of space over 3.5 acres. In April 2021, Inman will break ground on a 6,000 square foot expansion that will further increase the company’s storage capabilities. The current facility is equipped and designed to allow Inman

The facility has multiple 40-ton overhead bridge cranes, some of the largest curing ovens in the Midwest, and the highest voltage testing capability in a five-state area.

Inman Electric’s high voltage test panel is capable of running electric motors through 13,000 horsepower at 13,800 volts.

During test runs, motors are secured to a 20,000-pound steel floor plate on an independent

foundation. Test results are documented and provided electronically to customers. Inman Electric also now has the ability to test motors at full load capacity using a newly installed water-cooled dynamometer.

Inman’s vacuum pressure impregnation system (VPI) is 12 feet in diameter, one of the largest in the Midwest. The system utilizes 8,000 gallons of insulating resin for processing coils and windings of large electric motors. VPI provides the ultimate in rewind quality and electrical performance.

The VPI process gives coils the greatest mechanical strength, a cooler running motor, and the highest level of environmental protection for a long-lasting motor.

The sale of new industrial and agricultural motors and variable frequency drives is another a large part of Inman’s business as is their Motor Management Program. They are a distributor for Baldor/ABB, GE, Toshiba, TECO-Westinghouse, WEG, and Marathon motors and Toshiba variable

frequency drives. Their Motor Management Program includes the storage, maintenance, warehousing, and testing of customer-owned motors. Inman stores over 4,000 customer-owned motors for 50 individual industrial plants. Each of the warehouses is climate controlled, access controlled, and video monitored.

Inman Electric Motors is also is capable of rebuilding servo and spindle drive motors for the machine tool industry. They service all major brands including Fanuc, Siemens, Allen Bradley and Indramat. Inman has a large inventory of replacement parts and industry-trained electronic technicians who can provide electronic repair and alignment of all encoders and tachometers.

City of Peru SPLASH PAD: The City of Peru offers many amenities that provide fun for the whole family. The Splash Field at Washington Park gives kids of all ages plenty of summertime fun. Come cool off on the hot summer days on our baseball-themed splash pad. The space is approximately 12,000 square-foot with hundreds of jets spraying water for fun that all can enjoy.

MUSIC IN THE PARK: Music in the Park will be returning to Centennial Park this summer after the City of Peru saw its success this past year.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled a minimum of eight concerts for the summer of 2021 with the possibility to add a few more depending on public interest and talent availability. Featuring many different styles of performers, Music in the Park provides an outlet to feeding your creative needs and enjoy the outdoors.

ICE RINK: For some outdoor excitement during the winter months, the City of Peru offers an NHL regulation size ice skating rink for public use. The rink is located in Washington Park on top of the pickleball and basketball courts as the weather dictates. The rink is big enough to accommodate those who wish to use it for general skating and playing hockey simultaneously. When the weather warms up the rink’s lining is removed so the public can use the unlying courts.

CENTENNIAL PAVILION: The newest addition to the City of Peru for the public to enjoy will be Schweickert Pavilion located in Centennial Park. The open-concept band shell will be used to accommodate events featuring live music, such as the city’s Music in the Park program and was made possible by the generosity of the Schweickert family. The structure will be a permanent fixture in the park and will have open sides to accompany viewers who choose to view performances from all angles.
