Capitol II Theatre is the home of holiday movie traditions for Jasper County families By the time everyone has had their fill of turkey and pie and the dinner table conversations that almost always turn political — no matter how hard you try to avoid it — family members need a break from each other on the holidays. They need to stretch their legs and enjoy each other’s company outside of the house.

For many families in the Jasper County area, it means packing everyone in the SUV and making a trip to the movie theaters. Whether it is Thanksgiving or Christmas, the theaters are about the only places left open for business. Capitol II Theatre in downtown Newton is no exception. In fact, these are busy seasons.

Dawn Bleeker, owner and operator of the Capitol II Theatre, said while it largely depends on the movies showing (kids films are best), the holidays typically bring the most customers to the local business. The week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve is usually the busiest time for the local theater.

“We stay open on the holidays,” Bleeker said. “We’re open every day. Our showtimes may be adjusted a little bit, but we

don’t close down for the holidays because we do have families coming in … Big families, small families. People are even grabbing their cousins and aunts and uncles to see the movies.”

Heck, that’s what Bleeker used to do before owning the movie theater. It was a family tradition to see a flick after everyone ate their Thanksgiving meal. Now, she sees that tradition continue with her customers, who not only get to enjoy the latest movies from Hollywood but also get a look at the Capitol II mascot.

Bleeker said she tries to make it a point to bring Joy the mini-pig more during the holidays. The talented and prissy piggy has her own suite in the movie theater for customers to gawk and admire. A lot of times, Bleeker said, relatives will bring their out-of-town residents just to see Joy, even if they’re not coming to a movie.

“During the holidays she’s usually there all the time,” Bleeker said.

In addition to playing whatever the studios have lined up for the holidays, the Capitol II Theatre also tries to schedule showtimes for old, tried-and-true clas-

sics. The theater has played free showings of “Elf ” the Saturday and Monday after Thanksgiving, sponsored by Newton Main Street and Riggs Printing.

Bleeker said this tradition has persisted the past few years, as have others.

In December, the movie theater also plays the movie “The Bishop’s Wife,” which is sponsored by the United Way of Jasper County and the Edward Jones investment groups in town. The theater also plays “The Polar Express,” sponsored

by Newton YMCA, MercyOne Newton and Lauterbach Buick GMC. Then, during winter break, the movie theater will have a free showing of “Happy Feet” in late-December, sponsored by Discover Hope and New Creation Church.

“Having the free movies and sponsorships is huge for us at the theater,” Bleeker said. “It kind of gives us a pick-me-up, and we always appreciate the support from the community. The people that come to it are very appreciative. They get to bring their families for free or very low costs and enjoy seeing older movies.”

Jamie Murphy casts a positive light on Newton with Maytag Park Holiday Lights, a free drive-thru display for all Tell us a little about your self and how you came to work in Newton.

I grew up near the Shenandoah area and I went to college at Graceland University in Lamoni. After school, I kind of got into parks down there in Bethany, Missouri. That’s kind of where I got my start. I spent a little bit of time in Kansas City, went back to Bethany for a while and then moved up here and was able to get on with Newton. And that’s where I’ve been ever since! I’m the assistant superintendent of park operations, and I’m going on year six with that position now. I was probably on my second year when we started the (Maytag Park Holiday) Lights.

So what gave you the idea for a free Christmas lights display in Maytag Park?

When I worked down in Bethany, we kind of had a little one in one of our small parks that we did. And I had always just wanted to do that again. The layout of Maytag Park was just really perfect for it.

So I just kind of went to some higher-ups that maybe could give me the go-ahead and put a little presentation together and started working with Jessica (Lowe Vokes) and Friends of Newton Parks. We convinced the right people!

From there, how did you get the project off the ground?

Once we got the OK to do it, of course, we had no money at that time for it. So that was kind of our whole deal to do it; we could do it, but we just had to find a sponsor. When we got the OK to go look for sponsors, we went right to Clemon-Maki Insurance. Jessica knew some of their guys had some interest in it and mentioned it before. So we went to them and asked them if they wanted to be a partial sponsor or something, and they jumped right on board to be the main title sponsor and do the whole thing. And they have been every year.

How did it go the first year?

The first year it was a little bit difficult.

We didn’t have a lot of electricity. It was very sparse throughout the park. We were starting from scratch and had nothing!

We had to buy everything that we needed. The first year was just playing with it and seeing what you could get! We didn’t have a lot, and it was a big park with a lot of space. With even what we had it was just so well-received that the next year I think we probably tripled what we had just because people jumped on board and wanted to be a part of this. That first year it amazed me how much people loved it and really wanted to be a part of it.

When is the light display ready?

What do residents say about it?

Usually, in some form, we open the Friday after Thanksgiving. Clemon-Maki has a night where they come out and that’s kind of our opening night. We at least have some of the lights on the Friday after Thanksgiving until after the first of the New Year. We hear so many people that say, “It’s amazing! We drive through it two or three times a week! My kids just love it!” Whenever somebody asks me what I do and I tell them I work for the parks in Newton, that’s usually the first thing they ask about. “Oh! Do you have anything to do with the Christmas lights?” I’m glad people enjoy it and that’s what they think of.

Did you expect the event to be as successful as it is?

I don’t think I expected it to catch on statewide. We had a couple of different publications where we’ve been listed in the Top 25 displays to see in Iowa. And I think Channel 5 News is going come do a little story on us this year. The second year, I think, Channel 13 did a story. I never would have guessed that all of that would happen, and that people from out of town and all over the state would be coming. But we’re hearing that’s happening a lot! So that’s awesome!

Area dancers put in the time to compete at the highest level, carry on traditions started in Jasper County almost 50 years ago Almost 50 years ago, Kathy Enyart decided to start a dance team at Monroe High School. That decision started the growth of what would become the largest dance and drill team state competition in the country.

At the end of each November and start of December, thousands of dancers on hundreds of teams from across the state fill Wells Fargo Arena to show off their moves in hopes

of bringing home a championship trophy at the Iowa State Dance Team Association state competition. Area teams have a long history at state competitions, and their coaches not only now lead their teams but many competed on the floor themselves.

“What I love about dance team being a former dancer was being a part of a team with girls who also enjoyed having the same passion as I did growing up,” PCM Dance Team Coach Lainy Curry said. “As a coach, what I love about dance team is being able to help high school dancers reach the same goals as I did when I was on the dance team.

It is very rewarding to help a the dancers grow not only into better performers but to help teach them other life skills that dance has to offer.”

Dance teams often take on the feel of a family, with hundreds of hours put in together to perfect routines. Dancers go through the stereotypical blood, sweat and tears to make sure each arm placement is perfect on the beat and toes are pointed as soon as they rise from the floor.

“I love dance team because of the family culture you can create. Every person is a valued member of the team. We need each other to make the team a successful unit,” Bax-

ter Dance Team Head Coach Nicole Burdess said. “Dance team is different than any other team because they work hard all year long to go to state and showcase their hard work and dedication. Participating in this team drives their desire to be a part of something really unique and different.”

The skills the dancers learn along the way can be used for the rest of their lives. Learning to work together as a team while taking responsibility for their own part is only a fraction of what they take away from the experience.

“Dance team is a great team to be apart of, because I believe it builds confidence in students,” Colfax-Mingo Dance Team Coach Kelsey Gillespie said. “It gives them goals to work towards and really strengthens them not only

IF YOU GNOME, YOU GNOME There is no limit to Tamara Yardley’s creativity, she has a gnome for everyone Tamara Yardley can’t go anywhere without thinking about gnomes. When most folks go to yard sales, they are buying something for themselves or their home or a relative. Meanwhile, Yardley is looking through clothes and trinkets and decorations thinking to herself: “How can I make a gnome out of this?”

For the past three years, Yardley has been asking herself that question and pumping out gnome after gnome after gnome, and her craft business has flourished.

Yardley founded Tamara’s Gnomes and Crafts in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. While being cooped up inside her house, Yardley started making gnomes as just something to do to pass the time. She

had no intention of selling them at first; she just wanted something to do, and, well, she liked gnomes.

Apparently, so does the rest of the world. It seems like these little decorative and trendy figurines can be found anywhere. With colorful hats covering up their eyes so only their nose and beard stick out, they carry with them a rather charming demeanor. Yardley said she likes being able to give her gnomes personality.

“Sometimes I’ll look at one for a long time before I get one made,” Yardley said.

“I have one in there right now that’s only half-made. But sometimes as you’re building them you realize you could add some more flowers to him or a little star in his hat. Just something to give him his own

personality or character.”

For instance, a gnome with a coffee bean patterned hat needs to have a tiny latte in his hand and a newspaper to read.

The gnome sitting in a forested area needs more flowers and vines going up his hat, and maybe some red mushrooms to accent his tall red hat. These are the details that make it exciting for Yardley.

Oddly enough, the gnome craze has some folks polarized.

“Some people are like, ‘Oh! They’re so cute! You make these? Wow! I just love them!’ and other people are like, ‘Gnomes scare me!’ How do gnomes scare you? It’s not that troll under the bridge!” Yardley

Cont. 7 What do you enjoy most about organizing the light display?

We make a lot of the displays.

I love designing it and coming up with what new things I’m going to have this year and where I’m going to put them. I try to change it every year so it’s not always the same as far as where I place stuff. I really enjoy just designing the layout of it.

When do you start planning and preparing for the light display?

Well, I’m already planning for next year! Once I know what I’m going to do for this year, then I start thinking about how I can change it for next year. I’ll work all winter on new displays and what I’m going to have new for the next year. We’ve been working now since probably the end of September, still working on displays and getting everything laid out. I went and bought Christmas lights the first of October and people were like, “Really?” And I’m like you don’t understand, I really

gotta get going early when it’s this much.

Maytag Park Holiday Lights has quickly become a tradition.

How does it feel knowing you started that off?

It’s a pretty awesome feeling.

When you do a job and you get that opportunity to create something that people recognize, I mean I’m not the one who needs recognition for myself, but I want it for Maytag Park, I want it for the city, I want it for Friends of Newton Parks and for everybody that’s involved. It’s such a thing that brings the community together. It’s something people can celebrate and enjoy. That’s just a really awesome feeling to know that every year somebody else wants a display, and it’s somebody new that hasn’t been there.

It seems like it keeps growing every year.

In the past, she would have her gnomes up for sale at farmers markets, but these days Yardley finds herself selling the little guys at craft shows, alongside wreaths.

The gnomes are made of all different kinds of fabric, some are even made out of decorative socks. Some are short. Some are tall. Some are wildly complicated.

The first gnome she ever received was a gift from her boyfriend. Of course, she loved it, but at the same time she felt she could do better. After looking up some how-to videos on the internet, Yardley made her own gnome. The blue top hat was two times the size of the gnome’s body, and he had huge boots.

Then she made another. Then another. Before long, she had more gnomes than she knew what do with. But now that she’s selling

Cont. 11 physically, but mentally, as well. Dance team doesn’t just teach students how to dance, it also teaches discipline, commitment and shows results based off the hard work they put into their routines.”

It is also an outlet for those who have put in years of practice outside of the school at a studio to show a greater audience where they have come and how they have grown.

“I think it’s important because just like any sport, representation matters,” Newton Pacesetters Head Coach Graham Sullivan said. “To have an outlet at the high school level for those who have taken dance classes since they were two years old to help those athletes to be seen. It creates a family for them to belong to while in high school.”

Often heading in to practice before the sun rises, the dancers need to have the dedication and determination to put in a couple of hours of work before most people’s days even begin. Taking on a variety of dances which each show unique skills showcases the versatility of dancers and the drive they have to make them the best they can be.

Dance team is responsible for teaching what ‘team’ is,” Curry said. “There are major adjustments in technique when switching styles of dance. You have to make a personal commitment to be able to dance in perfect harmony while showing the appropriate emotion to match the music and style of dance you perform.

“It is very physically and mentally demanding. It raises the adrenaline and success evolves from personal dedication and teamwork. It builds self-confidence, integrity, allows self-expression, it helps you become a problem solver and most of all it simply makes you feel good!”

All of the hard work culminates on the floor of Wells Fargo Arena as the dancers step into the spotlight of state competition.

Whether they come out on top of their category or put on their best performance, the experience is one that the dancers and coaches will never forget.

“The best part of state competition is getting to experience the moment when they get out on the floor and show what they have been working toward, for the past five months,” Sullivan said.

Curry has many family ties to the competition besides bringing her own team.

them to other gnome-crazed customers, she almost doesn’t have enough to go around. The demand for gnomes is high, and that might be partly due to their widespread appeal.

Whether or not people think they like the gnomes, every person could like at least one because of the flexibility in their attire. Oftentimes, Yardley makes holiday-themed gnomes or gnomes wearing different sports team patterns. The Cubs fan in the family? They could use a gnome. The Hawkeye fan? Give ‘em a gnome!

Somewhere in the world there is even a person who needs a Yoda gnome, or a gnome holding a bourbon bottle with a corncob pipe There is no limit to Yardley’s creativity.

“There are so many different ways you can go with them,” she said. “If there was, I’d get really bored. And I like the ones that are little more challenging.”

niece, dance team has always been a family tradition and they have seen it grow to the top-tier level it is now.

“As a second year head coach, what comes to mind is progress. From my mother’s era in 1980-1984, there were three styles of dance: pom, novelty and kick. There was large school and small school,” Curry said.

“Jump to my era, performing at Wells Fargo and Hy-Vee Hall versus a large school’s gym and having eight styles of dance and 300 Iowa schools represented. There are more than 5,000 dancers that compete and over 2,000 routines in two days.

“My mom, my sister, myself and now my niece have all danced for four years in high school on a dance team that competed through ISDTA. We have met lifelong friends through this experience and now we all volunteer to keep it going forward, growing and to not be afraid of change to make things better for those coming up.”

Enyart served as ISDTA director for decades before passing the baton to her daughter who heads up the association to this day. What started in local gyms by a coach from smalltown Iowa has grown into the destination competition. And it’s only getting started.

M. A. Zarchy and the Boston Store

By Larry Hurto Newton Historic Preservation Commission & Main Street Design Committee M. A. Zarchy (18911923) came to Newton from Des Moines to manage the Boston Store, a men’s clothing store, in 1915. He was located on the ground floor of the Mershon Block on the southeast corner of the square in the store room that had formerly housed the photographic studios of D. W. Whitcomb and R. B. Grothe.

On Sept. 4, 1915, the Newton Daily Journal announced that workmen were busy remodeling the store room.

Grothe had a threeyear lease on the property but subleased it to Zarchy. Zarchy told the press on Sept. 28 that he had “a long time lease on the store room and expects to remain here and become one of the business firms of Newton.”

Mose Aaron Zarchy was born in the part of Poland partitioned off

by Russia, the son of Isaac and Sarah Zelda (Kopman) Zarchy. He arrived in the United States in 1906.

In Des Moines he worked as a clerk and bookkeeper for Charles Silberman, wholesale men’s furnishings, 315 Court Ave., before coming to Newton.

On Oct. 25, 1914, he was married to Gertrude “Gertie” Hurwitch (1891-1920) at the home of her mother in Des Moines. The daughter of Alexander Cecil and

Sarah Rachel (Zarchy) Hurwitch, Gertie Zarchy was born in Russia. She came to America in 1908.

It was reported that she was “a great help” to Zarchy in his business being “of a cheerful disposition at all times” and having “a host of friends in Newton.”

H. B. Allfree bought the Mershon Block in 1916. Allfree announced “that he will tear it down when the present lease expired and erect a strictly modern up-to-date building” in its place. This became known as the Allfree Building and, later, the Jewel Building.

Zarchy then removed his business to the Griebeling Building on the north side of the square (118 N. Second Ave. W.).

The Newton Daily Journal reported on Mar. 1, 1916 that Zarchy was making some needed improvements to the store. “. . . Carpenters are at work tearing out partitions and putting in new shelving thereby increasing the size of the store very materially.

“M Zarchy manager states that after being in business five months on the east side of the square the patronage is getting to a point where more room was absolutely necessary.

“He states that he will carry a larger stock and will continue the same policy, that of giving his

patrons the full value of their purchase.

“The move adds much to the appearance of the store and when the changes are all made and the new stock is in it will be a very bright attractive sales room.”

The Boston Store opened for business at its new location on July 13.

Zarchy continued making improvements to his business as time went on.

“M. Zarchy, on the north side of the square, is adding a complete new line of shoes and is improving and remodeling the entire store and general line of new stock will be installed,” the Newton Record of Mar. 4, 1921 announced.

“Some new clerks will be added to the force.”

But despite all of his efforts business seems to have been up and down

for Zarchy. (He had run a quitting business ad in the Record in 1918 (?).)

On July 11, 1922, Zarchy stated that his business had been turned over to two trustees, E. A. Kaplan and Isador Robinson, both of Des Moines. He said the liabilities of the business were approximately $15,000 and the assets $9,000.

Zarchy tried. He conducted numerous sales.

He made buying trips to Chicago and Des Moines.

As with any business, employees came and went.

The Boston Store’s greatest loss was that of Gertie Zarchy, who died Feb. 5, 1920, of pneumonia following an illness of three days.

That left the couple’s only child, a son, Alexander Cecil “Alex” Zarchy, born Aug. 8,

1915 in Newton, without a mother.

On July 18, 1922, Zarchy was duly adjudicated bankrupt.

In August, it was announced that M. G. Silver and brothers, of Des Moines, had purchased the Zarchy stock of goods, and taken over his lease. They asked Zarchy to stay on as manager of the business “for the time being.”

According to the Jasper County Record, Zarchy returned to Des Moines where he entered the shoe business, “but was forced to give that up on account of poor management.”

On Apr. 9, 1923, Zarchy shot himself with a revolver in his apartment in Des Moines, “as the family were sitting down for the noonday meal.” (Zarchy had married his sister-in-law, Rose Hurwitch, twoand-a-half years earlier.)

“Members of the family at dinner heard the discharge of the gun in an upstairs room,” The Des Moines Register said. “When they investigated they found Zarchy lying unconscious on the floor, a revolver at his side. They summoned physicians and Zarchy was rushed to the hospital where he died shortly after 3 o’clock.”

Ill health and financial worries were thought to have prompted his act.

M. A. Zarchy is buried beside his first wife in Jewish Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
