Snowed in? Snow problem!

Winter activities are abundant in Jasper County

Eventually, that dreaded “S” word will be coming back to Jasper County. It’s inevitable here in Iowa. Snow is just part of our Midwestern winters, as are the freezing temperatures.

Heck, if it wasn’t for the darn wind it wouldn’t be so bad, right? But even though the ground will be frozen for months on end, and our arms may ache from shoveling heaping piles of snow off the sidewalk for the dozenth time, the winters can be fun.

Luckily for us in Jasper County there are plenty of unique outdoor activities that only come around one season a year.

In addition to taking advantage of the snowy landscape, they’re enjoyable enough to make us forget about chilling wind gusts, cold temps and all that snowblowing you have to do in your driveway when you get home.

IF THE SNOWSHOE FITS, WEAR IT Jasper County Conservation offers snowshoes for people to rent for a day or an entire weekend for use around the county. Conservation staff say many people who take advantage of the day rentals take them over to Maytag Park for its convenient location and wide open space.

The Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve, which is located just west of Grinnell, is also a favorite spot for Jasper County’s veteran snowshoers. Quarry Springs Park is a new city park in Colfax that is also open for snowshoeing. Miles of trails weave around the park’s two ponds.

Conservation also hosts several snowshoeing events throughout the winter, which requires participants to pre-register and pay the snowshoe rental fee. These events are usually held during the weekends at Maytag Park and are usually scheduled after a significant snowfall. But snowshoeing is an activity that is allowed at most city and county parks.

DON’T TRY DOING THIS ACTIVITY UPHILL Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve is the place to be in Jasper County if you want to spend a few hours cross-country skiing. The preserve trails themselves were originally set up to be used for skiing, with several races being held there in the past.

All it takes is a weekend shopping spree When it comes to choosing which types of decorations to adorn your home with for the holiday season, Julia Prendergast said it’s always best to pick what you like.

“It always depends on your style and what you like,” she said. “I always tell people to decorate with what you like, because you’re the one who is going to look at it the most. So if you love it, it doesn’t matter if anybody else loves it. You’re going to look at it every day.

Make sure you love it.”

The owner of Fine Things Reclaimed has seen all kinds of holiday-inspired ornaments, trinkets and knickknacks stocked on the shelves of her Newton retail store. Customers’ tastes in decor can change, which is why Prendergast orders her merchandise a year in advance in anticipation of new or growing trends.

“I like to have every style,” Prendergast said. “We can start with the minimalistic and then we can grow and we can build on it to what they want it to look like. Sometimes people don’t know what they like. So it’s like, ‘Well, let’s start here and build until you love it.’ And then they have exactly what they want.”

Farmhouse country Christmas decor feels homey

retail allows shoppers from all across the area to browse a variety of different styles and tastes. At Fine Things Reclaimed, the shelves are chock-full of classic contemporary decor.

“It has some of the same Christmas colors, but it’s very clean, very sharp and not a ton of colors,” Prendergast said, noting the bright reds associated with the holidays are often substituted for ruby red. “It’s a contemporary color where you kind of tone it a bit. You do a lot with the eucalyptus, too, for a cleaner look.”

Simplicity is the name of the game. White-as-snow tableware with straightforward designs pair well with most modern home decor. Prendergast said most classic contemporary items in her store are minimalistic, too. French country style merch take contemporary another step further by adding small pops of color.

Cardinals are always a popular decor in Newton shops year-round. At The Farmer’s Wife, owner Bonnie Terpstra said the town’s signature bird always bodes well with customers during the holidays. Their crimson feathers pair nicely with the classic red-and-green color scheme and pine trees.

Unsurprisingly, shelves at The Farmer’s Wife are filled with plenty of rustic decorations for a country home. Terpstra seems to take Prendergast’s advice to heart by choosing the decor and ornaments she likes and putting them up for sale.

Being in business for about 19 years, Terpstra certainly knows what sells.

Ornamental trees, red berries on branches and wood decorations all fit in with a themed “country Christmas.” Decorating for a farmhouse is made simpler by finding more practical decorations like holiday mugs, placemats, rustic tableware, oven mitts and cloths, which are great for displays or real use.

“We’ve also mixed in some dip sets because of lot of people like cheese and crackers and that type of thing during the holidays,” Terpstra said. “The natural wood tones are really in, too.

The baskets with tassels are really in and I have wooden beads that are very popular, too.”

Other ornaments at The Farmer’s Wife are more eclectic and colorful, which Terpstra said fit the “boho” look. Short for “bohemian,” the style fits free spirits who enjoy the mix of saturated colors and earth tones. Terpstra describes the style as informal, which blends naturally with the country decor.

Amanda Price Newton’s Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tell us a little about yourself: I have called Newton home for most of my life, born and raised in Newton, graduating from NHS in 1997, then attending the University of Iowa and graduating in 2000.

From there, I moved to the Washington, D.C. area and got my toes wet working for my first non-profit, “Center For Education Reform”. After several months I chose to move back home to Newton to be closer to my family. I found a job in Des Moines and moved to Johnston.

A couple years later I married Jeff Price and his job brought us back to Newton. We now have two kids Ella, 16 and Jackson, 12 and still call Newton home.

I was very fortunate to stay at home with my kids for several years until they started school. I decided to go back to work, and a position opened for the director of the Newton Housing Development Corporation.

I worked there for two years until 2016, when I accepted the position of executive director with the Greater Newton Area Chamber of Commerce where I am currently employed.

How are you involved in the community? In 2010 I was asked to be on a committee to start up a Young Professionals group in Jasper County and eventually was nominated to serve as the president, which I held for three years before I turned my leadership over to another eager member. This group was very important in my professional development journey as well as helping me achieve my goal of community betterment. I made lasting friendships through my work with the YP’s, and it has shaped the way I work, and lead and I hope to give that experience back to my community by now taking the YP’s under the Chamber wing and reviving their mission.

I also served as a board member on the Newton Parks Board for more than 10 years. We planned and brought to life numerous park improvements and amenities that the community now enjoys.

I most recently served on the “Newton’s Future Hometown Pride Committee” which helped select and fund local projects. I served on the bond committee for the new Berg Middle School. It was one of my most cherished and valuable memories. I worked with a large group made up of community leaders, elders, educators and parents who had a passion for their community. Together we worked tirelessly to

Upcycled, vintage ornaments are keeping it classy Mike Sell, owner of Farmhouse Creation, sees his upcycled furniture fitting in well with a “country Christmas” theme, too. The wood furnishings give farmhouses a fair amount of character, as do the upcycled wreaths Sell and his wife, Cindy, restore. Sell said they save wreaths that are on their way out.

“We breath new life into them, do new things to them and fix them so you don’t have to start from scratch,” Sell said. “The barn wood items also lend themselves well (to Christmas decorations) because of the color. Plus, when I do the upcycling I paint it so it’s more of a neutral that it can match the Christmas decor.”

Finding creators who specialize in repurposing materials for special decorations is what Farmhouse Creation is all about. Sell said one such vendor used rebar to create minimalist Christmas trees for either inside or outside display.

The same person also uses horseshoes and other metal parts to create unique snowmen.

Holiday items that have a unique character to them or are visually aged certainly add some classical tones to a home. Which is why we can’t rule out the antique shops when looking for unique holiday decor. All those vintage ornaments seen on a grandparent’s mantelpiece or Christmas tree are easily found here.

At Relics, LLC, there’s a year-round holiday section of the store on the third floor. In it is where you’ll find an amalgamation of one-of-a-kind trinkets, Santa Claus figurines and retro toys. Sleds and Coca-Cola Santas are plentiful, as are the many trees and quirky ornaments set aside in the store.

Your perfect decorations are out there. You just have to know where to look.

Julia Prendergast: “I would have thought this season they would have been gone, but we still have tons of ‘em. They’re still everywhere and they’re super cute. You’ve got Easter ones. You’ve got Christmas ones. You’ve got Halloween ones.

So you’ve got every season of a gnome. I think people just think they’re cute.”

Mike Sell: “You gotta stay with what’s trendy. They’re really popular and they just kind of put a smile on your face. If a gnome can put a little smile on your face, or a lighted snowman or an upcycled barn wood mirror, that’s fantastic.”

Bonnie Terpstra: “The gnomes are still really hot! I got gnomes again in every shape, size and color – and texture.

I got the plaques, the stuffed gnomes and gnome statues. I don’t know why they’re so popular! It’s kind of crazy.”

Uhlenhopp Arboretum, which is located west of Grinnell, is also a great choice. The park has miles of newly constructed trails that weave through open prairie and some woodland areas.

Quarry Springs Park is another great venue with more than a mile of open-air trails offering long stretches of even ground ideal for beginners. Rock Creek State Park is also open for almost any winter activities one could imagine. Several trails are maintained throughout the winter and are open to both skiers, snowshoers and snowmobiles.

FISH OUT OF WATER (AND ICE) Mariposa Recreation Area is a great spot for ice fishing, especially since Jasper County Conservation completed the large lake restoration project in 2020. The lake was restocked with fish after it filled back up and this winter

should provide nice sized catches for anglers. Mariposa is located about 10 miles northeast of Newton and is open year-round for both fishing and camping.

Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve has several lakes suitable for ice fishing, too, with the most popular being the Ahrens Access. And while the lakes and ponds at Uhlenhopp Arboretum have not been stocked yet, conservation staff are hopeful by the 2022-2023 winter season they will have several excellent fishing areas open to the public.

Finally, there are two very nice ponds located just east of the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office. They are both a good starting point for ice fishing beginners. So good, in fact, that Jasper County Conservation tries to have ice fishing clinics at the ponds every winter, as well as hosting an annual ice fishing tournament there as well.

create a new school from scratch. Not only did we need to engage our entire community in this process, but we also had to get votes! It was fun, frustrating but rewarding, and now we have a beautiful new school where our children can get a quality education in a state-of-the-art building.

Also, through my position with the Chamber, I have worked to maintain and lead many of the community’s favorite events including the July 4th Parade and the Holiday Lighted Parade and activities following the Courthouse Lighting.

What is your favorite activity/event in Newton? My favorite event in our community would have to be NewtonFest. It really was started as a way to celebrate all things “Newton” that could include every community member and I think we have done a great job at keeping to that simple theme. There is something for everybody during that weekend of fun.

Of course, the Chamber has our annual Car Show every year as a part of this event, but I always look forward to the big concert held on the Saturday night of the event. It really brings our community together and reminds us all that Newton is a great place to live and raise your family.

What is a special memory from the community? RAGBRAI is something that I will never forget! Fortunately for me, I was asked to be a part of the “steering committee” for this event and I gladly accepted. I was blessed to help lead committees and oversee the event, but little did I know how much work, energy and time this event would take to pull off! The group of individuals who put in hundreds of hours of preparation into this event were amazing and I met and created some lasting bonds with many of them.

There are two main parts to RAGBRAI: one was the preparation, and the second was the actual event. The day of the event started around 4 a.m. for me and ended about 1 a.m. the next morning and I loved every single moment.

Our community showed up in a major way by opening up their homes to thousands of riders and lining the streets welcoming riders. The numerous community members and businesses who volunteered and/or supported the event was humbling. We certainly made a positive lasting impression on the thousands of riders who visited our community, and we were very fortunate to be able to donate

proceeds back to many who helped us as well as contribute to important community projects to better our community.

What excites you the most about the future of Newton and greater Jasper County? I am excited to see our housing growing, not only in Newton, but also in our surrounding communities. Not many people realize how important new housing is to a rural community and how much of a positive ripple effect it has on our taxes, our business growth, and so much more. Economic development cannot happen without new housing.

I am also thankful to see our rural broadband problem being addressed with the addition of Mahaska Communication Group. With their fiber network being built starting in 2022 we will see improvement in our quality of life in our county.

The new development happening at Legacy Plaza is very exciting, as well. What an awesome way to maintain the historic buildings while modernizing and connecting the downtown to Legacy Plaza. It will be a great addition to Newton and create that “cool” space to help attract young professionals which is important to continue to grow our community.

By Larry Hurto — Newton Historic Preservation Commission & Main Street Design Committee “The Hough family has been well known for generations in Newton,” Diana Shandling, a great-great-granddaughter of the founder of the business, declared in A History of Newton, Iowa(1992).

William Hite Hough, a native of Loudoun County, Va., came to Newton in 1858; he commenced business here as a general merchant. The 1870 Census listed him as a grocer.

He was elected as a Republican Jasper County Recorder, reelected in 1874, and served from 1873 to 1877.

“Wm. H. Hough, late County Recorder, is about to open a grocery store in Newton,” the Prairie City News reported on Mar. 9, 1877. Its source was the Jasper County Independent, “ever a strong Democratic paper” published in Newton.

Hough commenced running an advertisement touting his new grocery store in the May 3, 1877 edition of the Newton Journal, the Republican paper.

“Wm. H. Hough’s advertisement of his new Grocery Business appear[s] in

this issue. Mr. H. is a long time resident of Newton, and is very highly respected by all who know him. He keeps a very attractive place, and his old friends will not be long in finding him out.”

Hough and his wife, the former Sarah E. Bond, had seven children, five living: Carrie B., Arthur Moore, Lilia E., Frederick William, and Grace.

In the decade that followed, William Hough’s health began to deteriorate. He had an attack of diphtheria in 1886, the year he removed his variety store from the Osborn Block on East Main St. (now 109 First Ave. E.) to the new Stevens Block on West Main St. (203 First Ave. W.). He was laid low by “most painful” rheumatism in 1889.

These issues, plus “probable heart trouble,” caused him to sell the business to his son, Arthur M. Hough. William Hough died in 1894.

“When Jos. Stevens new block is completed, the large and elegant store room will be occupied by Hough’s Variety

Store,” The Newton Journal announced on Nov. 10, 1886. “The front will be of fine plate glass, and the room one of the most handsomely finished and convenient business rooms in Newton.”

This announcement appeared in the Journal on Oct. 17, 1888: “To accommodate increasing business Jos. Stevens is lengthening out Hough’s Variety Store room twenty-five feet. When completed it will make a beautiful room, and will give ample space for the display of the fine stock of new fall goods.”

In 1893, Fred Hough assumed the management of A. M. Hough’s Grocery and Variety stores, “Mr. Anderson having left,” the Journal reported.

On Mar. 22, 1899, he went into the laundry business with Carl Kennedy, his brother-in-law. They took over Wing’s Model Laundry and inaugurated the C. O. D. Laundry.

Grace Hough commenced clerking in the Variety Store in 1894. “Her bright face and winning manners will be an Fall/Winter 2021 • Jasper County Living

advantage to any place where she is employed,” the Journal gushed. Grace was Arthur and Fred’s younger sister.

Arthur Hough, who had formerly worked for his father, married Cora Adelaide Anderson, of Monroe, in 1881. He was traveling for a grocery wholesaler when he returned to Newton to manage the family grocery store.

The 1899-1900 City Directory lists A. M. Hough, groceries and variety store, at 107-109 N. Market (W. Second St. N.).

In 1902, Hough’s business was expanded, and he moved the stores to the lower level of the Masonic Building, 103-105 N. Market. EarthWise Pet and Silverado Jewelry Boutique are there now.

The illustrated annual edition of the Newton Daily Herald, dated Jan. 1, 1903, offers tantalizing details regarding the business: “The variety store is located in the room formerly occupied by the post office, and to which a large addition was built. This gives a much more effective room for the distribution of the splendid variety stock with fancy china, glassware, queensware, books, toys, notions and the other miscellaneous aggregation of materials that go to make up a first class variety stock.

“The grocery department is located in the room formerly occupied by Townsend’s harness shop, which has been greatly enlarged by the building of the new Masonic block which gives an additional entrance on the south opposite the post office so that it is handy for Newton residents who go after their mail to drop across the street and leave their grocery order.

“Everything about the establishment looks brand splinter new, neat, clean and attractive. It is characteristic of Hough’s establishment to be clean and well kept, and his store now is especially so. The reason for the change is not far to seek. The fact is Hough’s business has been growing. He runs a high class establishment in his line and people appreciate it and manifest their approval by an increase in patronage.”

In 1908, Arthur Hough’s son, Leigh Anderson Hough, joined the firm as manager of the variety store; it be-

came known as A. M. Hough & Son. In 1917, Leigh Hough’s brother, Roy Arthur Hough, who had formerly clerked for their father, quit the road as a salesman and came into the grocery store; the firm then became A. M. Hough & Sons.

Arthur Hough’s youngest child, Edith Baird, remembered how the business was.

“In those days many of their customers called in their orders by phone.

In the early days Hough’s first delivered by horse-drawn carriage to the kitchen door and later by motorized carriage. If you walked in Hough’s front door, a clerk greeted you and wrote your order down. While you shopped, they filled the order and it was ready upon your return. Most customers charged their groceries and settled at the end of the month.

“Farmers brought their eggs to the store where someone candled (held eggs to a light box to detect if they were fresh). You then exchanged the eggs for groceries. The eggs were sold to the store customers.

“At Christmas time you would find a 250-pound wheel of New York sharp cheddar cheese. By the New Year the cheese was gone.

“The store remained open during World War II. The meat counter gave you few choices, even if you had meat ration stamps. Sugar and butter were also rationed.

“The Variety Store, well known for its candy counter, had a big selection for the children to choose from.”

The Houghs made many improvements to their stores over the years.

“A new steel ceiling has replaced the old ceiling in the Variety and workmen have begun to put on the new ceiling in the grocery department,” the Journal told its readers on July 20, 1910.

In 1940, the store fronts were remodeled. John Clouse was the contractor in charge.

The stores finally closed in 1956.

“Women nowadays won’t buy groceries if they have to carry them to a car parked across the square,” Roy Hough lamented.

Mrs. Baird attributed the stores’ closure to the appearance of supermarkets in Newton.
