Going Antiquing Unique pieces from the past found in shops throughout the county Every second Saturday of the month, the streets in Colfax fill up a little more and people can be seen coming and going from the local shops. The weekend has been marked for shopping and Spring City Vintage and Weathervane Vintage welcome everyone to their stores.

“The second Saturdays are so much fun,” Weathervane Vintage owner Rob Langloss said.

Located in the former Jasper County Tribune office, Weathervane Vintage opened three years ago after Langloss and Jeff Frye decided to take the leap to shop ownership.

“We used to sell at the Brass Armadillo Antique Mall and we did that for about four years in Des Moines. We decided we wanted to do something a little different and Julia next door kept saying the office is empty you should open up a store and we were like, nah, we don’t want to do that,” Langloss said.

The duo decided to take a look at the building and after meeting with owner Brad Magg, decided it might be a fun idea.

“We decided to do it in April 2018 and we opened in

May and have been here ever since,” Langloss said. “It is fun, we love doing it.”

Now, with a building full of classic pieces from fans and a variety of dishes along with ink pots, mirrors, figures and more, Langloss and Frye are looking to possibly expand bringing even more to the Mineral Springs City.

Next door, Julia Kern, owner of Spring City Vintage, also has Magg to thank for opening her own business. After having a booth at Pappy’s Antique Mall in Newton until it closed and working with other business owners, Kern came upon a situation that had her looking for more space.

“At one time, I came across so much inventory, truck load after truck load, and it was winter time and my shed doors were frozen, I couldn’t even put it away. I asked my friend, Brad Magg, who owns the building, do you mind if I store my stuff in here so I can sort it and he said sure,” Kern said. “He said the moment I knew you were going to store it, you would open a store. And that’s how it worked.”

ON DUTY

Jasper County Sheriff John Halferty Tell a little about yourself — I was born and raised in Newton.

I attended Newton Schools and gradated in 1984. I played football for Coach Frank Gilson. His assistant coaches at the time were Dick Stiles, Dave Rowrey and John Jenkins. I have often talked about how they helped mentor me and prepare me for my career. History teacher Jack Chadwick was also another great teacher and mentor.

His son Brian and I were teammates. My father, Bob, worked at Maytag and my mother, Melba, worked at Newton Manufacturing.

I am the youngest of six siblings.

After high school, I attended DMACC and earned an AS degree in criminal justice. I was fortunate to do an internship with Newton Police Department while earning the degree.

In January 1987, I was offered a position as a police officer with Newton Police Department and attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy that spring. I worked nearly 11 years with Newton Police Department before accepting a position with the Jasper County Sheriff ’s Office, under Sheriff Jim Verwers. I was very fortunate to have many opportunities, beginning with Newton Police Department. I was an instructor, field training officer, DARE instructor, school resource officer, tactical team member and drug task force officer.

During my early years with the Sheriff ’s Office I was assigned again as a drug task force officer.

During this time we saw a significant increase in local methamphetamine clandestine lab production.

I was later appointed as Chief Deputy in 2000, under Sheriff Mike

Balmer. I served in that position until 2012, when Sheriff Balmer retired and was elected to my first term as sheriff. I was also part of a team that investigated two cold case homicides that occurred in Jasper County.

My wife, Kendra and I, met in college and have been married since 1988.

We have two children and four grandchildren. Kendra and I have a l s o b e e n very active over the years in several organizations. We have been active in youth sports as coaches and helped with youth programs at our church in Colfax. Kendra has been on the Jasper County Fair board since 2004 and she and I help with activities there. I have also been a volunteer firefighter/EMT with Mingo Fire since 2000. I have been appointed as medical examiner investigator by Jasper County and continue to serve in that position when needed.

During my off duty hours, I enjoy spending time with family, especially my grandchildren. I also enjoy working on our small acreage and helping family and friends with their projects.

What got you interested in law enforcement? I had a grandfather and an uncle involved in law enforcement while growing up.

What are the rewarding parts of your job? When we are able to help someone in need, or mediate

After a year of being cooped up, Jasper County residents are itching to go outside Summer barely started and there’s already enough folks in the county parks to make conservation staff believe there will be a lot of activity this season.

Keri Van Zante, director of Jasper County Conservation, expects more people to take advantage of the county’s recreational areas now that pandemic restrictions are easing up and vaccine has been more widely distributed. Or perhaps those who found solace in the outdoors last year realized how much they enjoyed it.

“Our campgrounds have been very busy and our lakes have been busy,” Van Zante said. “We’re just starting to have our ‘public paddles’ again — where we take our canoes and kayaks out for people to use in the evening when we have Summer 2021 • Jasper County Living

special events — and they’ve been really full.”

Van Zante noticed something else, too. So many people had bought their own kayaks and other outdoor rec equipment during the pandemic, which gives her confidence that people do enjoy the county’s recreational facilities like the Jacob Krumm Nature Preserve and Roorda Wildlife Refuge.

“We’ve seen so many people out recreating that I think have not done that before,” Van Zante said.

“And I think it might have started with the pandemic when they were looking for outdoor things to do.

A Colfax staple, Cratty Shack not only serves up tasty ice cream but also has a full service dining room, too. Owned by Gaudencio Munoz-Temich since 2019, the restaurant features a bright mural by a local artist and many favorites locals and travelers have come to love.

Having had an ice cream shop on the corner of State and Walnut since the 1950s, generations of Colfax residents have enjoyed a cold treat on a hot summer day from Cratty Shack.

cont. 7 a serious situation with a good outcome — the older I get the more I appreciate working in the county that I grew up in. You get to know a lot of people and form good relationships.

What are the difficult situations you have to deal with? 1 — Serious incidents, especially those that involve the death of a person or persons. 2 — People who are upset with me or my team members over a situation and I am responsible for mediating.

Trying to come to a conclusion or disposition where not everyone agrees. 3 — Watching significant events impact our citizens and county and struggling to work through these incidents — August 2020 Derecho, Pandemic, etc. My faith and family are my support team that help me when times get tough.

As you move to the end of your career, what will you remember most from your time as sheriff? I have been honored and blessed to serve as a law enforcement officer, in the county where I was raised. I intend to serve the remaining 3.5 years as sheriff then retire. At that time I will have served 38 years.

There have been challenges and disappointments along the way for sure. I have made mistakes and had to eat some humble pie along the way. But I have a great team that works here, dedicated, professional and serving individuals that make it much easier to be sheriff. I was recently contacted by someone I have known since childhood. They sent me an encouraging note about my work as sheriff and also that they were doing well after many struggles in life. That simple message, reinforced my desire to finish my law enforcement career, with the same dedication and passion I have tried to model.

What does the future outside of law enforcement hold for you? I do not have any specific plan at this time.

I want to focus on continuing to serve to the best of my ability in this position. However I have considered options. First and foremost is spend time with family. I may consider a law enforcement related position in a different area, and/or continue to serve in the fire/EMS field. For those who know me, know I do not like to be idle. I love helping and serving others and am confident that an opportunity will present itself.

“Now that we have Fareway in town, I’ve been doing every Saturday,” Kern said. “People can also make appointments, I absolutely love it when they make an appointment.”

Down the road in Newton, Laurie Nelson, owner of Relics, has to remind herself when she’s out hunting for the next piece to put up for sale at her downtown antique store that she’s not “shopping” for herself, she’s shopping for her customers. She may not be a full-on hoarder, but she might be if she keeps forgetting her rule.

But sometimes when she passes by a special kind of glassware, she can’t help but picture the perfect spot for it in her home. “Maybe just this one piece,” she’ll say to herself. Who’s she kidding? Nelson knows the one piece will turn to two. Or perhaps more. And if it’s red, white or blue, she’s got to have it.

“My husband will tell me all the time, ‘We’re here to sell.

We’re retailers.’ And I’m terrible. I will admit I’m a borderline hoarder — some people would say I’m more than borderline.

But I’m not ready to admit that yet.” Nelson said, crossing her arms.

Of course, that’s the challenge when hunting for unique antiques is both your passion and your business model. Finding something special for herself, her husband Jerry or a loved one is bound to happen. But one look inside Relics is proof enough that Nelson can find things for customers, too In fact she knows exactly what kind of pieces will sell. The more unusual the item, the more likely it will attract a customer’s eye.

“We try to get stuff where sometimes we don’t even know what it is,” Nelson said. “And we’ve had a few things and we didn’t know what they were. So sometimes we post it (online) and say, ‘What is this?’ We’ve even rung up items where all Jerry did was put question marks on the description.”

At antique shops, there are hardly any run-of-the-mill items stocked on shelves. Nelson agreed that is what keeps stores like hers interesting, because those items — as unique and niche as they appear to be — do not stay long. If anything, it means the hunt for that treasure was worth it.

“I’m always excited when I can get a piece I know is not exactly easy to find,” Nelson said. “What’s really fun is finding it at a decent price. We go to auctions and do estate buys and we go to garage sales.

People come in and say, ‘Hey I got all this stuff.

What can I do with it?’ And we’re like, ‘We’ll take it!’”

When it felt like every community event was cancelled last year, families and individuals often took advantage of the parks and outdoor recreational facilities. Van Zante said those who enjoyed outdoor activities last summer are likely to return in 2021. Conservation is more than prepared to handle the traffic.

“We’re always busy in the summer,” Van Zante said. “ And with the big remodel of Mariposa and being able to boat now … having yet another place where people can put their boat on to go fishing, canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding, we’ll probably have different users using that park than those who used it before.”

Jasper County is home to nearly 3,200 acres of recreational areas, forest and wildlife management areas and preserves, all of which provide their own opportunities for summer activities.

Here are the recreational areas owned by Jasper County Conservation and the kinds of amenities available to the public: ASHTON WILDWOOD PARK 8717 W. 122nd St. N. — Mingo The 113-acre park is home to picnicking opportunities, picnic shelters, drinking water, restrooms, tent camping, group camping, interpretive trail and hiking trail. Cont. 13 Surrounded by blooming floral landscaping and an old truck serving as a rustic centerpiece, the Alta House prides itself with its inviting atmosphere reminiscent of the farmhouses small-town Iowans would grow up around. Of course, staff have put in a lot of effort to spruce up grandma’s house into something bigger.

“The carpets were mauve and all of the interior finish was very ‘90s,” VanGilder said of the building prior to its renovations. “Even though it had hardly been used, it was just outdated. Alta House basically built itself. It had this aura about it from the very beginning when we decided to make it a wedding venue.”

It didn’t come easy. With her construction background, VanGilder was confident the building aspects and renovations would turnout how she wanted. She can build a house.

She can build a room. She can even calculate the engineering aspects of it and then have an engineer look it over to make some tweaks.

“Decorating? Picking out paint colors? Picking out floors?

Choosing stains? Fixtures? All that stuff makes me crazy,” VanGilder said.

Coming up with a name was difficult, too. By chance, VanGilder’s husband met interior designer Karen Zimmerman, of Altoona, who was also married to a graphic artist.

VanGilder asked Doug Zimmerman to develop a logo and a few names for the venue. He returned with a list of names.

The very first one was Alta House, which was in reference to the ranch-style venue’s “tall” stature. This was the one, VanGilder thought. To this day she can’t even remember the other names. She let Doug Zimmerman finish his Summer 2021 • Jasper County Living

presentation before telling him Alta was also the name of her grandmother.

“Each summer we got to go to Grandpa and Grandma’s house on both sides for a week, and it was always so nice because you got all the attention,” VanGilder said, noting she had six other siblings and grew up in a farm family. “That became our themes. Families. Family history. Iowa families.”

To go along with the homey Iowa feeling, Alta House’s rooms — more often used by the wedding party — are filled with black-and-white photographs, old timey decorations and relics of the past. Interestingly enough those photos of old farmers and bygone days aren’t stock images. They’re real people.

And they hold a special significance to VanGilder, too.

Many of them are her own family photos that she had in her possession. The photos are dotted all over the place conspicuously blending in to their environment so as not to detract guests from the bride and groom. Even the flow keeps the wedding part in the forefront.

“Alta House just has an aura about it like it was meant to be,” VanGilder said. “I designed it on purpose to have the stairs coming down to the patio and these (interior) stairs coming up so it creates a really nice conversational flow for the bride and groom.”

What makes Alta House stand out is its uniqueness, she added. VanGilder is also grateful for her hardworking staff who are just as driven as she is to make Alta House stand out. The right people have fallen into Alta House’s path at the right place and at the right time.

“It’s just come together really nicely,” VanGilder said.

The Jarvises and Jarvis-Bazar

By Larry Hurto — Newton Historic Preservation Commission & Main Street Design Committee When C. U. Jarvis and his wife, Fannie, came to Newton in 1907 from Minneapolis, Minn., they had in mind the fulfillment of a dream: to open their own variety store.

Whether they knew it or not, the competition would be stiff. The socially prominent Hough family, which had been established in business here since 1857, had a variety store on the west side of the square.

Curtis Ulysses Jarvis was born in Cross Plains, Ripley County, Ind., Sept. 29, 1867, the son of James F. and America Olive (Gilliland) Jarvis. He married Frances Rebecca Cole, who was born Dec. 2, 1869, in Mattoon, Ill., in 1898. The 1900 Federal Census found Jarvis working as a salesman in Harrison, Vigo County, Ind. By 1902, the couple was in Minneapolis where Jarvis was employed as a floorwalker for Wm. Donaldson & Co. In the 19041906 period he was employed by the Minneapolis Dry Goods Co. On Feb. 11, 1907, Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis arrived in Newton from their former home in Minneapolis. “Mr. Jarvis will open a bazaar store in the room lately occupied by W. O. Foster,” The Newton Herald announced, “and the family will reside in the rooms over the store.” This was on the east side of the square.

Later they moved to the southeast corner of the square (now 101 First Ave. W.) just west of the Iowa Mercantile Company, the “Big Store.” A nephew, Lloyd Cole, and Ruth Korff worked in the store.

At about 9 p.m., Dec. 2, 1913, Jarvis was just going into his store having been to the Summer 2021 • Jasper County Living

Star Theatre, Newton’s south side movie house, at 109 1st Ave. W. Attorney Marion R. Hammer, Jr. met him on the street and told him he had a telephone call that he could take in his law office located above the Jarvis-Bazar.

The Newton Daily Journal for Dec. 3, 1913, tells what happened next.

“The party at the phone asked if it was Mr. Jarvis, then asked if his wife was in Des Moines. When Mr. Jarvis had answered yes to both questions the message came that his wife had dropped dead on the street.

“The shock was terrible, as only one can know who has received such a sad, shocking message.

“Soon the bell rang again and this time A. B. Sims, of the police force, told the anxious husband that his wife had been down town with her little son and her mother and she was taken with a sudden pain dropped to the sidewalk and died before she could be taken to the mother’s home.”

It was Fannie’s 44th birthday!

Jarvis departed for Des Moines a few hours later. He told lawyer Hammer before leaving they would probably take Fannie’s body to Mattoon, Ill., “the old family home,” for burial.

“Mrs. Jarvis went to Des Moines last week on Friday to visit her mother, Mrs. Cole and a nephew, Lloyd Cole, who worked in the Jarvis store at one time,” the Daily Journal account continued.

“When she went away she told Miss Ruth Korff, a clerk in the store, that she wasn’t going to say how long she would be away;

for she always came home sooner than she intended or stayed longer.”

“Mrs. Jarvis was a very fine appearing woman and in most ways was a picture of health,” the paper reported. But she apparently suffered from a rheumatic condition that troubled her considerably, “and she told the writer this fall that she looked well but was miserable much of the time.”

Of course, Jarvis, his young son, Raymond, and Mrs. Mary E. Cole, Fannie’s mother, were devastated. Relatives of both Mr. and Mrs. Jarvis came here for the funeral services.

Jarvis carried on the business as best he could for several months. Then on July 11, 1914, the Daily Journal announced that he had sold the Jarvis-Bazar to the Spurgeon Mercantile Co., of Chicago. Possession was to be given about the first of September.

All the time he was in business here, “Mr. Jarvis has not taken a vacation and after September first he expects to take one and get a long needed rest,” the paper indicated.

“He will remain in Newton with his boy for a time but later expects to find a location where he will conduct a store on the same lines followed in the one here.”

On Aug. 31, 1914, Jarvis left Newton for Perry where he bought a store “similar to the one here he recently sold.”

C. U. Jarvis died at his home in Perry May 4, 1942, following a heart attack. He was buried beside Fannie in Newton Union Cemetery. He was survived by his son, Raymond, who was living in Eureka, Calif.
