School board approves $70K greenhouse By Ty Rushing Daily News Senior Staff Writer In a manner of 15 seconds, a person can anonymously notify four members of the Newton Community School District’s administrative team about potential threats or issues. NCSD Technology Supervisor Chris Bieghler demonstrated how the district’s new anonymous tip line works at Monday’s board of education meeting. The tip line can be used by parents, students and staff to report anything that may pose a safety threat. The district opted to implement this new feature when it began developing its new website last year. During the demo, Bieghler called the tipline and left a voicemail. After a quick silence, the phones of Superintendent Bob Callaghan, and two other staff members who were present began to ring. Tipsters will be able to leave voicemails, send text messages or email.

By Ty Rushing Daily News Senior Staff Writer Just before last year’s Bowlful of Blues festival, co-headliner and guitar virtuoso John Primer declared that “the Blues was coming to town.” Although Primer won’t be returning, the blues is indeed coming back to town this year as the 22nd annual Bowlful of Blues festival kicks off at noon Saturday at Maytag Park. This year’s theme is “True Blue 22.” “It’s good cheap entertain-
ment,” said Mike Pender, president of the South Skunk Blues Society, which plans the annual event. “It’s family friendly and we got a great line-up.” Pender said that SSBS has been working on this year’s show since February, after they formed a six person committee to select which acts would perform.
