Celebrating the Land of the Free Ty Rushing/Daily News Friday was big day for the City of Newton, beginning with the Fourth of July parade and other festivities in the morning in downtown Newton and concluding with a fireworks show at Agnes Patterson Park on Friday night.

The National Weather Service received reports of tornadoes Sunday night in Jasper, Grundy and Tama counties Sunday night. Jasper County was under a tornado warning from approximately 9:10 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday. At approximately 9:09 p.m., a tornado was reported about four miles west of Rock Creek Lake or six to eight miles northeast of Newton. It was moving southeast at 25 mph, according to a Code Red alert. TORNADO See Page 2A

DES MOINES — James Wiley Brock, 72, of Newton was sentenced Wednesday in United States District Court by Judge John A. Jarvey to eight years in prison for possessing child pornography.
