The National Weather Service received reports of tornadoes Sunday night in Jasper, Grundy and Tama counties Sunday night.

Jasper County was under a tornado warning from approximately 9:10 to 10:30 p.m. Sunday. At approximately 9:09 p.m., a tornado was reported about four miles west of Rock Creek Lake or six to eight miles northeast of Newton. It was moving southeast at 25 mph, according to a Code Red alert.

Downtown retailers invited to attend Main Street presentation The Newton Main Street Partnership’s Promotions Committee will host Main Street Iowa Promotion Specialist Terry Buschkamp on Wednesday. Buschkamp will tour the Main Street District, meet with the promotions committee and give a public presentation.

Downtown retailers are encouraged to attend the public presentation, which will include discussion on strategies for how downtown retailers can benefit from Main Street promotions. The public presentation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. at Bridgehouse Coffee Co., located at 111 W. Second St. N. This will be the third of five state visits with Newton Main Street committees. The visit with the Design Committee was on Friday and the Organization Committee on June 25. The Economic Restructuring Committee hosts a visit Aug. 6.

The sheriff ’s offices in Jasper and Tama counties had no reports of injuries or damage late Sunday.

Grundy County Sheriff ’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Wolthoff said one home about a mile west of the town of Reinbeck suffered roof damage and another across the street sustained major structural damage. He said both were occupied but no one was injured.

The National Weather Service may survey the area today.

Dec. 14, 1966, in Iowa City to Curtis and Norma Hopkins Flora.

Danny was united in marriage to Annette Skladzien on Aug. 7, 2000, in Muscatine.

Danny was a member of the Johnson County

Archers, the Illinois Iowa Treasure Hunters Club and was of the Christian faith. Danny was a truck driver for the past 15 years for Wendling Quarries.

Danny had lived in Newton, Iowa City and Des Moines.

Danny is survived by his wife, Annette of Tipton; his father, Curtis Flora of Tipton; his sister, Tammy Roark of Des Moines; his brothers, Bart Flora of Tipton and Scott Flora of Burlington; brother and sister-inlaw, Andrew and Judy Jenkins of Tipton.

Cardiology at Penn Avenue may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Memorials may also be mailed to the funeral home; add, Attn: Leach Family on the envelope.

Those left to honor Beverly’s memory are her husband, Larry of Newton; children, Annie Leach of Grinnell and Larry (Windy) Leach, Jr. of Grinnell; her nine grandchildren; a greatgrandson; and 10 brothers and sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin daughters, Teresa Leach in 2003, and Lisa Diggins in 2009; siblings, Roberta “Willy” Stafford, Rebecca Williams and twins, Jane and James in infancy; and her mother-in-law and father-in-law.

July 4, 2014 TIPTON — Danny L. Flora, 47, died peacefully in his home on Friday, July 4, 2014, from complications of cancer. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m.

OWLS program to visit Wagaman Mill Wednesday

Alcoholics Anonymous Noon at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church

Jasper County Conservation Board will host its monthly program for senior citizens called Older, Wiser, Livelier Seniors, or OWLS for short.

The OWLS program will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Jasper County Community Center in Newton. The group will then leave from there for the Wagaman Mill in Lynnville.

The group will be at Wagaman Mill from 10 to 11 a.m. and will take a tour and be given a presentation about the history of the mill.

Know thy neighbor I have a regret. I’ve always been told not to dwell on regrets, but if I don’t learn from them, then it’s a waste of an emotion. Like many regrets, it began at a bar. Thankfully for me, this regret does not involve a night of debauchery but a missed opportunity.

I was at UpDown in Des Moines. For those of you unfamiliar, this is a place where millennials and generation X’ers such as myself can go to relive our childhood. The place is filled with arcade-style video games, TVs playing

I was at the token machine preparing for a round of “Simpson’s Arcade” when I made eye contact with a young man. He appeared a bit nervous and perhaps socially awkward.

I said hello, and he replied with the same pleasantry in a thick sub-Saharan accent. He was by himself, and following our exchange, he quickly walked away.

Later that evening, my friends and I needed a reprieve from the thumb crunching arcade games, so we retreated to the retro-80s plaid sofa in the corner which doubled as a “Super Mario Bros.” gaming station.

As we played on the console television, I noticed the man was sitting in a chair next to us, staring outward into the sea of bar patrons. We made eye contact a few more times, and a look of hesitant eagerness came into his eyes. He was still alone. A bar employee came up to the man, pat him on the shoulder and asked if he was OK. He replied simply, “yes,” and the bar associate moved on.

As he sat there I kept repeating in my mind, “Invite him to play, Mike. He looks like he’d enjoy the company.”

I wanted to hand him the controller, but I lost my opportunity as he walked away, and we didn’t see him the rest of the night. Maybe it was the journalist in me, but after he’d gone I wondered who he was and what was his story. Or it could have been my regret for not extending a hand.

I thought of the man again this weekend while covering Prairie Days in Prairie City, as I saw what true community is about. People were embracing in the street like they hadn’t seen one another in years. I recall a one man saying to another, “I’m glad you came down here because you would have been in a ton of trouble.” People were even yelling my name from across Garden Square, patting me on the shoulder with good greetings.

I may be new to town, but this felt like home. But I think back to that basement bar where I could have brought a piece of community to a quiet young man. Could I have made him feel at home?

Let’s Get Simple Is there a simple solution to all your problems at work?

The simple answer is yes.

Welcome to the new world of workplace simplicity. According to Dennis Nishi in The Wall Street Journal, the latest productivity trend is to produce more by doing less.

It makes sense, really. Instead of trying to accomplish 12 tasks at once — and doing them all poorly

By Bob Goldman — reduce Creators Syndicate the number of tasks you tackle from 12 to one. You’ll still do that one job poorly, but, at least, that leaves 11 jobs you haven’t screwed up.

Consider Kelly Sortino, a school administrator in Hillsborough, California. As Nishi reports in his recent article, “To Make Yourself More Productive, Simplify,” Sortino “had a tough time recalling what she’d accomplished at the end of each hectic workday.”

Unlike yourself, the reason Sortino couldn’t recall what she’d accomplished isn’t because she didn’t accomplish anything. Instead, she was working doubletime, overtime, “putting out fires” and didn’t “have the time to do more of the strategic and visioning work to make those larger changes at the school.”

While your visioning activity is mostly focused on visualizing the free Buffalo hot wings buffet at the Kit Kat Club happy hour, administrator Sortino actually had goals she wanted to accomplish.

So she enrolled in a workshop at nearby Stanford University and learned “how to simplify work processes and reduce waste.”

Since it seems unlikely that Stanford will enroll you — they

already have a mascot — let me share some simple simplicity tips.

One important element in the new simplicity is to “block out your time more efficiently and minimize distractions.” This should be easy. Instead of floating through the day, blown hither and yon by the winds of management whim, block out a schedule and stick to it. From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. is your organizational block.

You ignore all contact with the outside world during these two hours, which you use to acclimatize yourself to the cruel reality of actually being out of bed. At 11 a.m., you leap into action — that’s right, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. is your lunch block. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. is your nap block. And from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. is your socialization block. You interface with your co-workers to learn the latest gossip and decide whom to blame when management gets on your case for getting nothing done.

Another basic building block of the new simplicity is managing all the wonderful, technological productivity tools that make our lives so miserable.

At Stanford, Sortino learned the importance of “clearing her email inbox and workspace on a regular basis.” Taking those empty beer cans out of your desk drawers and the empty pizza boxes out of your file cabinet on a regular basis would be an excellent way to clear your workspace. As for clearing your email box, you can certainly review each email and respond in a timely and professional manner, or you can adopt a breakthrough new technology called “delete all.”

One click and your email box is as empty as your brain.

If you can’t completely cut yourself off from electronic communication, simplicity experts suggest that you “schedule specific times to check emails and texts, as opposed to reading email as it is received.” Of course, you

will have to train your managers to your new, productive schedule of only reading emails between 4:57 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., assuming that you are at your desk, no unwatched episodes of “Game of Thrones” are on your DVR, and transit Mars is in the first house with natal Jupiter.

Giving up multitasking is another productive way to simplify your work life. Instead of spending your time buying on Etsy, bidding on eBay and binging on Netflix, pick one mission-critical task and focus on it with all the single-minded, simple-minded concentration only you can rally.

(And really — don’t those organic, artisan potholders you’re buying from Drusilla in Bend, Oregon, deserve your full attention?)

One aspect of the new simplicity I absolutely cannot endorse is “dropping tools that impede understanding between co-workers.

If you can’t explain yourself in a single email, consider calling, texting or meeting in person instead.” This is not sensible, and it is definitely not simple. If you are going to start to have real conversations with real people, there will be real trouble.

Another simplicity blunder is “work with your boss to prioritize important work and eliminate unproductive tasks.”

Poppycock! You’ll impress your boss on how easy it would be to eliminate unproductive tasks by simply eliminating you. That simple, you ain’t.

Fourth of July parade in Newton never a disappointment To the editor: I admit, I love a good parade, and Newton’s Fourth of July parade is never a disappointment. The sense of pride starts the minute you hear the sirens. Then the recognition of every branch of military, from the flags, our military men and women walking or riding, to the parade watchers standing in honor and applauding each and everyone of them. The bagpipe players were awesome!

There’s no better sound than that of a John Deere tractor or a Harley in a parade. Two of the most recognizable sounds that just seem to shout America, and American made.

There was never a dull moment in the parade.

Some incidents just seem to forever stick in your mind. Starting with the lump in your throat, thank-

ful for our freedom, to the poor doggie, who just could not “hold it” anymore, to the poor kid who accidently “stepped” in it. Thank you to the gentleman who ran out with a plastic sack to do clean-up.

(He also received a round of applause).

Such a large selection of representation in this year’s parade. So many, many businesses, clubs, churches, activities that our youth participate in, (band, gymnastics, Boy Scouts, etc.) to several politicians.

To each and every person who planned/organized, rode, walked, gave candy or other free items in this year’s parade, thank you. Job well done, give yourself a pat on the back, you deserve it. A huge round of applause for Helen Grosvenor, this year’s grand marshal. She looked absolutely radiant, happy and proud.

The Jasper County Conservation Office’s director and one of its interns, Keri Van Zante and Dallas Cupples, respectively, each will be making requests to the Jasper County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

Van Zante will ask the board to consider transferring camping fees her office collected from its Ashton Park and Lake Mariposa properties from the county’s general fund directly to JCCO’s budget.

The total amount Van Zante is seeking to transfer is $4,239 and this item is also formally listed as Transfer Order 1330 on the agenda.

Specifically, Brock produced the visual depictions by, among other things, using cameras hidden in his residence to film teenagers using a tanning bed in his home.

Lynnville. The mill is operated by the Lynnville Historical Society, with JCCO being responsible for a small portion of its upkeep.

Cupples wrote in her request, that the society can’t afford to pay the Iowa Department of Transportation for the signs, which is why she is coming to the board with the request.

There isn’t an estimated cost for the signs in the package.

Jasper County Community Services Director Jody Eaton will be presenting the board with an update on the Central Iowa Community Services Region.

The county joined the region last year, and the region is tasked with providing mental health services for its county members which include Jasper, Boone, Franklin, Hamilton, Hardin, Madison, Marshall, Poweshiek, Story and

Warren counties.

Eaton met with the board last week in a closed session after the regular meeting to discuss patient care quality and process improvement.

In other business: • Jasper County Human Resources Director Dennis Simon will request the board approve an agreement with the Iowa State Association of Counties to participates in ISAC’s HIPPA program.

• Tameca Howze, owner of Integrity Audit Services, will present the board with an update on the total amount of savings she’s done for the county by examining its telephone services.

• Cory Wade is asking the board for a fireworks permit.

Brock was also ordered to forfeit his home, where he produced the videos, and all equipment used to commit the offense.

According to court documents, three additional charges of sexual exploitation of children via the production of child pornography were dismissed. Those charges stemmed from Brock’s alleged enticement of a 13-year-old girl to “engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of such conduct” in a

tanning bed in his home.

He is accused of committing similar acts with a 14-year-old girl and another 13-year-old girl.

The case was investigated by the United States Department of Homeland Security/Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Newton Police Department and the Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

By Zach Johnson Daily News Staff Writer Tonight at 6 p.m., the Newton City Council will have the third consideration of an ordinance on adding stop signs to various intersections.

The council unanimously passed the first and second consideration of the ordinance without discussion. If the ordinance passes the additional stop signs will be placed within the Belmont Park Subdivision.

In other business: • Newton Main Street Executive Director Andrew Bassman will give an update on Main Street to the council tonight.

• The council will have public hearings on two resolutions tonight.

The first resolution is awarding Snow Removal Equipment Acquisition Project for the Newton Municipal Airport to Don’s Truck Sales Inc. of Fairbanks, Iowa. The city will pay 10 percent of the contract, which totals $15,036 that will be taken from the Airport Capitol Fund.

The second resolution is awarding the 2014 East Mart TIF District Sanitary Sewer Extension Project to H&W Contracting of Sioux Falls, SD. H&W Contracting had the lowest bid of $216,958.75.

The council will vote on the resolutions following the public hearings.

• The council will have the first consideration on an ordinance Providing For The Management, Control And Government Of City Hospital Or Health Facilities. In February 2014, the council passed a resolution giving support to the Skiff Medical Center Board of Trustees to ensure that the hospital remains in Newton. The board’s authority related to decisions on joint ventures and affiliations, contracts and various real estate transactions without seeking city council action.

• The council will discuss a resolution approving a reallocation of funds within the Community Betterment Fund. Newton City Administrator Bob Knabel will host a discussion on the CIP Sustainable Funding Effort for the City of Newton.

Bishop wanted to present the new monument on Friday, because it marked the 20th anniversary of when the original veterans’ memorial on the south lawn was dedicated.

During his speech, he paid tribute to the group who helped build it and has previously acknowledged how important that monument is to him, as his father, Coy, a World War II veteran, has a brick placed on it.

In a ceremony full of emotional moments,

keynote speaker Betty Southern Atwood, formerly of Mingo, may have provided one of the most overwhelming stories.

Betty has two brothers on the wall, Deane and Lowell, who were killed in action five weeks apart in Italy during World War II. Betty said shortly before they perished, they actually got to see each other while overseas, which she said was rare since one was an officer and the other a private.

While speaking, Betty indicated she was overwhelmed the size of the crowd and by the fact she was selected to deliver the address.

She also said she hopes this monument becomes a place that people come to Jasper County to visit, and she’s proud of the county’s effort to honor those who served.

“Most of us, we can say that we have done our share of remembering our own in the years past … We remember our own veterans, but today we are remembering a lot of veterans, a lot of special veterans who are here in Jasper County,” Betty said.

In order to build the monument, Bishop headed up a committee including fellow veterans Bob Thorson, Marvin Morris, Keith Thorpe, Chris Chartier, Wallace Schermerhorn and Marta Ford, and together, they helped coordinate and come up with ways to accomplish their mission of creating the new memorial.

The committee, along with many members of the “Red Shirts”— former Jasper County

Freedom Flight volunteers — held a number of different fundraising events to pay for the new memorial. Everything from a second chance prom dance to a rib supper was held in order to garner the necessary funds.

After nearly a year’s worth of work, countless man hours and being completely reliant on community and business donations, Bishop, the committee and a number of Red Shirts got to see it all come together in Friday’s ceremony that had people staking out seats more than anhour before it began at noon.

Observing the packed crowd, Bishop told everyone why the new memorial was such an important task for all those involved.

“This memorial is dedicated to all Jasper County veterans who served in both peacetime and war. Every veteran that has served at one time raised their right hand, swore allegiance to our country and, in essence, wrote a check that could be cashed for up to and including their lives,” Bishop said.

Newton celebrates Independence Day New veteran’s memorial unveiled

By Ty Rushing Daily News Senior Staff Writer Last June, Doug Bishop approached the Jasper County Board of Supervisors with a plan to erect two new veterans’ memorials on the courthouse lawn. Bishop promised the board that it would be privately funded and that it would be ready to be dedicated by July 4, 2014.

On Friday, less than a year since his appearance before the board, Bishop proved to be a man of his word, as the new Jasper County Veterans Memorial Complex was officially unveiled in a grand ceremony on the courthouse’s east lawn.

Newton broke out of its funk in a big way Thursday night against Grinnell.

The Cardinals swept a doubleheader in convincing fashion by beating the Tigers, 11-3 and 14-4.

The Cardinals snapped a fourgame losing streak with the pair of wins and won their first backto-back games since June 6 and 7. The 25 runs scored by Newton were more than the team had posted in its previous seven games combined.

Newton scored early and often in both games. Kaytlin Ahn ignited Newton’s offense in the opener with a two-out single that scored two runs in the first inning. That hit was the start of a big game for the freshman designated hitter. Ahn finished the game 2-for-4 with a team-high three RBI. Her teammates followed suit as the Cardinals scored in each of the first four innings.

Senior pitcher Ashton Hoffman delivered one of her best performances of the season in the opener. She retired seven in a row from the third through the fifth innings while her team built a 9-0 advantage. The right hander struck out six, a season high. She also allowed five hits, which was the fewest Hoffman has given up since June 23.

Area softball roundup: Hot bats lead PCM to victories

By Ben Schuff Daily News Sports Writer PRAIRIE CITY — Prairie CityMonroe continued to swing the bat well in a pair of conference wins over Collins-Maxwell/Baxter and North Polk on Thursday. The Mustangs defeated CMB, 13-1 in four innings in a make-up game from June 30, and then beat the Comets, 8-7.

PCM built its large lead against CMB by scoring four runs in the second and six in the third for a 12-1 advantage. Kayla Jennings pitched all four innings for win, allowing only three hits.

CMB’s Megan Ritter drove in her team’s lone run in defeat.

The Mustangs earned a season sweep of North Polk in the night cap. Racheal Freland earned the win in the circle as she had four strike outs.

Several PCM players had notable performances in the batter’s box throughout the night, led by Abbi Gilson, who went 6-for-7 with a double, four RBI and two stolen bases in the two games. Jennafer Uitermarkt finished 4-for-5 with a triple and Makenna Van Veen was 4-for-7.

The Mustangs increased their winning streak to seven games with victories and are averaging over nine runs per game since June 23.

PCM was scheduled to play in a tournament on Saturday against Central DeWitt and Mid-Prairie,

but the games were cancelled due to weather conditions.

Colfax-Mingo splits conference games An eventful Thursday that saw Colfax-Mingo play at Roland Story in the afternoon and then at Saydel in the evening resulted in a split for the Tigerhawks. Roland Story topped Colfax-Mingo, 2-1, before the Tigerhawks beat Saydel, 12-4.

Roland Story broke a 1-all tie in the bottom of the sixth against Colfax-Mingo when Sam Reisinger scored what became the winning run following an error by Tigerhawk right fielder Brooke Nicholson.

Roland Story pitcher Erin Nuetzman held the Tigerhawks in check offensively by striking out 10 in seven innings. Nuetzman allowed only four hits, one of which came from Rhiannon Haley that led to ColfaxMingo’s lone run of the game in the fourth inning.

The loss spoiled six solid innings from Colfax-Mingo pitcher Ries Wilson, who scattered six hits and recorded three strikeouts.

The Tigerhawks defeated Saydel in their second game of the day after trailing, 4-0, heading into the top of the fourth inning.

Colfax-Mingo scored four times in the fifth and took a 5-4 lead on a two-RBI single from Jena Teed.

PCM baseball no-hit in loss

By Ben Schuff Daily news Sports Writer ALLEMAN — North Polk pitcher Cole Jackson threw his second no-hitter of the season in a 7-0 win over Prairie City-Monroe Thursday.

Jackson, who held Saydel hitless on June 9, struck out 12 PCM batters. Only an error prevented him from throwing a perfect game.

The Comets scored three runs in the first and four in the second off PCM pitcher Luke Greiner. North Polk’s Grant Lang hit a two-run home run and Wyatt Johnson and Chris Flynn both had two hits.

Greiner lasted three innings and gave up six hits to North Polk while walking two. He suffered from three errors.

Montoya wins IndyCar race at Pocono Raceway LONG POND, Pa. (AP) — Juan Pablo Montoya noticed the Colombian fans waving flags and wildly cheering for him as he zipped toward the checkered flag. Moments after celebrating, Montoya ducked his way through the crowd waiting at Victory Lane and headed toward the grandstands to sign autographs and pose for pictures.

“I had to say thanks for coming,” he said.

Montoya saved his deepest gratitude for car owner Roger Penske.

Montoya won the IndyCar race Sunday at Pocono Raceway, the highlight of a triumphant return to open-wheel racing after seven years in NASCAR. Up ahead, a serious run at the IndyCar cham-

“I think people know I’m coming,” Montoya said.

Montoya won for the first time in the CART/ IndyCar Series since 2000 and had his first major victory since he won a road-course race at Watkins Glen in NASCAR in 2010.

“It’s been a long road, a lot harder than people realize,” Montoya said.

Just because we won a race doesn’t mean we’ve overcome it, don’t get me wrong. But it puts in a higher speed track. You know you can do it.

“Everybody’s got to have a start, and I think this will be starting it pretty good.”

The Coke Zero 400 was originally scheduled to go off Saturday night, but steady rain forced it to be postponed a day. When it did finally get started Sunday, it was interrupted several more times.

There were three red flags, two of them because of huge accidents that

took out most of the 43-car field and several top contenders. Jimmie Johnson, Tony Stewart, Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray, Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Greg Biffle and Kyle Busch were among those knocked out of contention.

Biffle and Kahne started the second massive wreck, a 25-car fiasco that ended with Busch getting flipped upside-down in his No. 18 Toyota.

“It just felt like a slow carnival ride,” Busch said.

The same could be said for the entire weekend at Daytona. Sprint Cup qualifying was a debacle, and then rain affected the entire, fourday event at NASCAR’s most famous track.

Sunday’s race topped it all, with just seven cars avoiding both crashes.

Not surprisingly, Almirola was among them.

He became the first Cup driver

other than Petty to win in the legendary No. 43 at Daytona. The previous time the 43 won was with John Andretti behind the wheel at Martinsville in 1999. So Petty’s renowned car went 543 races without a victory.

Almirola got out of his car and watched the radar with crewmembers during the final red flag, a 56-minute wait that had most drivers believing the race would resume. But when heavy rain soaked parts of the track, officials called it for good with 48 laps remaining.

“I was doing a lot of hardcore praying, hoping the good Lord would open the skies up and let it rain,” Almirola said. “If we would have went back racing, I still think we had enough car to go there.

“I don’t think this was handed to us by any means. Let me be very clear about that. ... Those last two restarts, Kurt Busch and Austin Dillon and

Brian Vickers, they didn’t just let me go. They saw the rain coming, too, and we were all racing for it.”

Vickers finished second, followed

by Kurt Busch, Casey Mears and rookie Austin Dillon. Danica Patrick was eighth despite a late pit-road mistake, and reigning Daytona 500 champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. was 14th.

Almirola became the 11th driver to win this season as they jockey for one of the 16 spots in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Many other drivers left Daytona scratching their heads over the decision to not wait out the rain like they had so many other times this weekend.

“It seems early to call a race,” Kurt Busch said. “Maybe we could have run later on today and still finished and everybody could have back home and to work on Monday.

Fun on the Fourth Ty Rushing/Daily News The fireworks show Friday night (pictured above and bottom left) at Agnes Patterson Park was one of the many highlights of an event-packed weekend in Newton.

Left: Malik Allen shows off the frog he entered in the frog race at Agnes Patterson.

Malik didn’t win the race but redeemed himself by later leading a group to victory during a tug-of-war match.

Below left: Henry Flaherty came up with a sure-fire way to win at disc golf — simply place the disc into the basket. Players who successfully tossed the disc in the basket were rewarded with various prizes.

Below right: Ellie Pearson sang the national anthem after Newton VFW Post 1655 Commander Tony Beck presented the colors at Agnes Patterson. Pearson’s and Beck portion of the program was a new addition to the activities leading up to the fireworks. The Newton Parks and Recreation Department coordinated this year’s festivities at the park.
