Cards ready to set new bar with state berth

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor A large contingent of returning runners and two returning state qualifiers has Newton’s boys cross country team entering its most anticipated season since head coach Steve Weeks took over the program in 2015.

Weeks has more runners than ever and the two returning seniors who ran at the state cross country meet last year have the chance to do something not many at Newton have done.

“This is by far my most talented and deepest squad of my career,” Weeks said. “Our expectations are to return our two state competitors and to get the team qualified along with them. I believe any goal short of the team going to state will be

a heartbreaker, but in all honesty, if these boys give me their all and leave everything out on the course, a coach can never be upset with that.”

Senior Jackson Mace-Maynard begins his final prep season ranked 24th in Class 3A after placing 39th in the state meet last fall. He was 15th at the Little Hawkeye Conference meet and qualified for state after placing third at the 3A state qualifier.

Senior Treycen Garton is the other returning state qualifier.

Garton was 22nd at the conference meet, ninth in the state qualifier and placed 68th at the state meet.

“I know Jackson was just ranked 24th, but I honestly think that’s too low for him,” Weeks said. “If anything, it’ll serve as locker room material. After watching him compete in track, I believe we have a top 10

athlete on our hands.

“Treycen is someone who will end the season ranked in the top 30. He and Jackson are good training buddies and Treycen has been showing flashes of brilliance and he’s about to have a breakout season.”

Weeks’ first Newton team started with six runners and finished with 13. This year’s team includes 23 runners, including six who ran on the varsity last year.

Those returners include seniors Derek Beiner and Hunter Kennedy, junior Leo Friedman and sophomore Landon Menninga.

After Mace-Maynard and Garton, the rest of the varsity lineup is wide open. Right now, the battle for the No. 3 spot is between Beiner and Menninga.

Cardinals hope to change course this fall

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor The last time Newton’s football program went 0-8 was 1959. Head coach Andy Swedenhjelm and his coaching staff have talked about that team a lot this offseason.

And if the Cardinals can follow up their 0-8 season from 2020 like the 1959 squad followed up theirs, Newton will be back on the winning track as early as this fall.

“We’ve had a lot of conversations with them, talking a lot about the 1960s era of the program,” Swedenhjelm said. “The last 0-8 team was 1959. The 1960 team built it up. The 1961 team won their conference. The 1962 team was fifth in the state. So there’s a blueprint. It’s already been done in our history. Teams have turned things around pretty quickly before. In order to get there, we have to acknowledge that’s where we were at last year and we have issues we need to fix. I think our kids bought into that and worked hard this offseason.”

Last season was one to forget for the Cardinals. They were affected

by COVID-19 more than some other programs and the on-field results were not what anyone in the program hoped for.

But Newton showed marked improvement in the final three weeks of the season.

a 19-point loss to Grinnell, which defeated Newton by more than 40 the first time around.

“The reality is you have to face reality. We can talk all we want, but the reality is we were an 0-8 football team,” Swedenhjelm said. “Our kids have to own that, they have to understand that’s not our expectation and that’s not where we want to be.”

The Cardinals are just two years removed from their last winning season.

Newton, which lost 18 seniors to graduation, hopes to flip the script with several key returners.

Swedenhjelm said he expected his defense to be strong this fall and they showed that potential in a scrimmage against Pella Christian last week.

The top returner to the defense is senior linebacker Reese Hammons, who finished with a team-best 57.5 tackles and added five tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a pick six.

The next best two tacklers from last year also are back in senior linebacker Braydon Chance and senior safety Adam Mattes.

Chance and Hammons will start at the two outside linebacker positions.

Chance finished with 31 tackles and 1.5 sacks last year.

There’s a competition at the inside linebacker spot between junior Brendon West and seniors Jaden Shannon and Jeremiah Baker, an incoming transfer from Perry.

West and Shannon each had 12 tackles a year ago and West chipped in a team-high two fumble recoveries with one touchdown.

The projected starters across the defensive line are seniors Cole Conner, Evan Grimm and Garrett Beerends and sophomore Blake Schilling.

Grimm tallied 13 tackles and one sack last season.

Mattes finished third on the team last year with 27 tackles. He’ll be joined in the secondary by junior safety Ashton Hartgers, senior cornerback Keith Moko and junior corner Alex

Moko collected 17.5 tackles and one interception last year while also returning a fumble for a TD. “I knew our defense would be pretty good. They performed well at the scrimmage,” Swedenhjelm said. “I think our defense is going to be pretty lights out this year. I’m excited about that.”

The offense doesn’t return nearly as much though.

The top returning offensive player is senior quarterback Zay Arguello.

He threw for 518 yards and rushed for

a team-high 526 while scoring eight total touchdowns. He also caught five passes for 46 yards.

Moko is back at slot receiver with Thomason serving as his backup.

Moko hauled in 16 catches for 208 yards and three scores last year.

Mattes, who will play primarily on defense, was second on the team with 141 receiving yards. He’s also the new starting kicker, making both of his extra points and going 1-of-3 in field goal attempts in 2020.

Cards reset roster with new head coach

Heidi Woollums played college volleyball and coached a club team in college. She always knew she wanted to pass on her knowledge and love for the game.

And after serving as Kim Florke’s long time assistant coach, Woollums’ time to run a program is now. And she’s excited for the opportunity.

“It’s gone great so far. We have great kids, which makes it easier,” Woollums said. “When you have a good group of kids who are willing to put in the time it makes it worth it and makes it rewarding.

Florke is now retired and Woollums is calling the shots. But she was heavily involved before, too.

“What’s crazy about it is, I have been involved in the program for 13 years now,” Woollums said.

“What’s great about Kim is that we were always equals. Yes, she was the head coach but she told me everything and she taught me everything. She prepared me well for this, but I have already called her and talked with her a lot. She’s on speed dial.”

The Cardinal program resets the roster in 2021 after losing most of its varsity to graduation. The only returning player who saw sig-

nificant varsity court time last fall is sophomore Kadance Ahn. Woollums’ coaching staff includes varsity assistant coach Mallory Shipley and junior varsity coach Nicky Lampe.

Ahn was second on the team in kills with 140 and second in digs with 159. She also finished with 25 aces and nine blocks. She was 233-of-255 in serves with a serve percentage of 91.4.

“We told Kadance she needs to be more than one-dimensional when it comes to hitting,” Woollums said. “She needs to be able to hit from all different positions.

The other teams are going to know about her so we have to have our middles available and do their part to take that pressure off her.

Shannon, returners set to lead Cardinals

A very big addition to the Newton girls cross country team and a few key returners should make the Cardinals more competitive in 2021.

Senior Alyssa Shannon will only get one cross country season, but she hopes to keep strong momentum after a solid track and field season in the spring.

The other varsity returners are seniors Kelsey Church and Morgan Stalzer and junior Kate Muckler.

“The team has looked great in practices so far,” Newton girls cross country coach Rachelle Tipton said.

“The varsity returners continue to push each other and bring some of the new athletes with them. I expect a pack of at least three and the more that pack can grow and/or move up the greater chance we have of being in the top half of the meets.”

Tipton expects Shannon to be the team’s top runner after qualifying for the state track meet in multiple events last spring.

Shannon is new to the sport but is a hard worker with natural ability.

Motivated Aquagirls seek redemption in 2021

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor COVID-19 factored in to all high school sports teams in 2020. And unfortunately for the Newton-Colfax-Mingo-Pella girls swim team, the coronavirus derailed the ending of its season.

Swimmers from Newton and Colfax-Mingo couldn’t compete in the regional meet after both school districts moved to all-virtual learning.

“It was a weird and heartbreaking year at the end for our district girls,” NCMP girls swim coach Sarah Patterson said. “We were lucky to have a really good and fun conference meet where the whole team got to compete but not having districts and state was a bummer.

“We actually haven’t talked too much about it, but I know the girls — the seniors especially — feel they have unfinished business.”

The 2021 Aquagirls will be 34 large this season.

And 13 of those swimmers are seniors. The roster also includes nine freshmen.

“We do have a strong team of experienced swimmers,” Patterson said.

“The seniors already have shown tremendous leadership throughout camp and this first week of training.

“Our freshmen class is a very solid group that will provide us with a lot of depth.”

Mustangs reload after another state semifinal appearance

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor PCM’s football program is getting to the point under head coach Greg Bonnett where fans and those watching from afar just expect a winning season.

The Mustangs have advanced to the Class 2A state semifinals in two of the past three seasons, won the 2018 state championship and have gone six straight seasons with at least seven wins.

No matter how many players graduate, the next guys up seem to make sure the program stays near the top of 2A. “I believe our success has been because we have good players who always make themselves better,” Bonnett said.

“This team is no different. We had 60 plus kids show up daily all summer long. We literally have to kick most of our players out of the weight room. I think some would live there.”

Last year’s team was 10-1 and lost in the state semifinals. Twenty-four seniors were lost to graduation. That means Bonnett and his coaching staff once again look to reload at the top of the roster.

They were in a similar situation when the Mustangs won the title in 2018 with a team full of talented seniors.

The following PCM squad went 8-3 and lost to the eventual champions in the quarterfinals.

with senior tailback Aidan Anderson, who was a third team all-state selection last season.

Seniors Durant Van Dyke and Kaden Hale are back from the defense and senior Tyler Kuecker returns as the Mustangs’ kicker.

Anderson was injured in the fifth game last season and didn’t return after breaking his leg. He still rushed for 735 yards and nine touchdowns and averaged 10.5 yards per carry.

Stock completed 64.3 percent of his passes, threw for 1,069 yards and 15 scores and rushed for 429 yards and nine TDs. He averaged 7.7 yards per carry on the ground.

Hale will be the primary backup to Anderson in the backfield. And the top five pass catchers from last season are gone.

Moving up into more significant roles as receivers will be a quartet of seniors in Van Dyke, Jake Eslinger, Carson VandeLune and Matt Rosonke.

Eslinger had a minor role as a running back last season and will play some fullback in 2021 and VandeLune moves to receiver after serving as Stock’s backup quarterback last fall.

The offensive line needed a paint job after losing a plethora of seniors from last year’s team, too.

The projected starters at tackle are sophomore Mark Bussan and junior Gavin Van Baale, the new guards will be sophomore Austin Van Maanen and junior Aydan Camu and the center is junior Donovan Nickelson.

“This team is full of very coachable players and most of them catch on quickly,” Bonnett said. “What we do requires communication between the players on the field so the ones who are catching on right away are very good at keeping the ones a little behind on the same page. I keep saying the louder we play the better we play.”

Eight of the top 10 tacklers last year for PCM have graduated. The top returning tackler is Van Dyke, who finished with 35.5 tackles and led the Mustangs with 12 tackles for loss and

six sacks.

Van Dyke and Eslinger return to the defensive line. Joining them in a rotation will be Camu, Nickelson, Van Baale and senior Anthony Savala.

Eslinger recorded 13 tackles and three sacks last season.

The linebackers all will be new, too.

Hale moves down to the position after collecting 18.5 tackles and an interception at cornerback last season.

Seniors Trey Brodersen, Cade Lindsay and Will Oelmann are the other projected starters at linebacker. Brodersen finished with 10.5 tackles last year in a backup role.

Griffin Olson at cornerback and VandeLune at free safety. Rosonke is expected to rotate in at all three spots, too.

Kuecker returns as the team’s kicker, but Bonnett said he is working to play other spots as well.

“He’s very valuable to us,” Bonnett said. “We want him to be able to kick the ball in the end zone first and foremost, but he also likes to score points.”

Kuecker had 17 touchbacks last season and hit 59 of his 66 PAT attempts and was 1-of-3 in field goal tries.

Back deep to return kicks and punts will be Fenton, Hale, VandeLune and freshman Adrian Robbins.

“He’s a running back and corner for us who has done some really good things this preseason,” Bonnett said about Robbins. “He has earned a shot at playing in a returner spot, and I personally think he’s an electric player who is going to make the type of explosive plays that make people’s jaws drop.”

The last time PCM did not win at least seven games the Mustangs were below .500 at 4-6 in 2014. Since then, PCM has lost no more than three games in a season.

This year’s non-district schedule includes Davis County (3-4 in 2020), 3A Newton (0-8) and 1A Pella Christian (6-4).

The Mustangs will be in 2A District 7 this season along with Iowa Falls-Alden (4-5), Albia (3-5), West Marshall (8-2), Chariton (0-8) and Roland-Story (0-7).

“I’m not looking too far ahead because we really need to focus on what we do right now,” Bonnett said.

“I am convinced that if we make ourselves the best team we can be, the wins and losses are going to take care of themselves. We know we have good competition scheduled throughout the year.”

Newton will be in 4A District 4 this fall with Pella (63), Oskaloosa (2-6), Cedar Rapids Washington (3-5 in last year’s 4A), Cedar Rapids Xavier (10-1) and Clear Creek-Amana (4-4).

“I like our non-district schedule. It’s a good mix of teams that do different things,” Swedenhjelm said. “In district play, Pella and Xavier are always good. Cedar Rapids Washington returns a lot of guys, too. You never know what can happen.”

The biggest obstacle for Swedenhjelm and the coaching staff is getting the players to believe they can win.

“The big things we worked

on this offseason are playing as a team, trusting your teammates and a lot of the mental side of the game,” Swedenhjelm said. “Our kids need to have some confidence in themselves. We have good players. They just need to understand they can win games and be successful. A lot of times last year they went into a game, and they didn’t believe they were going to win.

And if you don’t believe you’re going to win, you aren’t going to win many games.

“Our jobs as coaches are to make sure our kids are prepared, confident and know what they are going to do.”

Vittetoe back as Mustangs seek turn in direction

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor Mike Vittetoe resigned as PCM volleyball coach in December. He put in his time and was at peace with walking away from the program.

But after no one stepped forward to take over, Vittetoe is back and will once again lead the Mustangs into another fall season.

“They thought they were going to be able to get the position filled, but it didn’t work out,” Vittetoe said. “Neither assistant coach could take the position because of their job obligations. I didn’t want them to be short-handed. I didn’t want the program to suffer. If I didn’t do it, someone without a

lot of volleyball experience would have to.”

Vittetoe didn’t formally accept the invitation to return to the bench until August 8. He didn’t attend any open gyms. He basically stepped away completely.

The 2021 volleyball team features just two returning starters after the Mustangs lost 10 to graduation a season ago.

The returning starters are seniors Chelsea Bird and Claire Wilson. Juniors Riley Johannes and Sidney Shaver also are back after seeing court time last fall.

“I’m confident in those four right now,” Vittetoe said. “They definitely have starting spots.”

Bird and Wilson have dressed varsity since their freshmen sea-

sons. Wilson moves to outside hitter this fall after spending last year on the right side. Bird was last year’s libero but is needed at outside hitter this fall.

“Chelsea is going to be needed as a hitter this year because we don’t have a lot of experience there,” Vittetoe. “We are moving Claire to the outside so she can be more involved in the defense and we can get her more touches on offense.”

Wilson ranked first on the team last year with 48 aces, was second with 93 digs and third with 54 kills. She also finished with 10 blocks and was 234-of276 in serves for a percentage of TURN | 11

Nedder also qualified for state with senior Emma Curry and junior Maylei Ruggles in the 400 freestyle relay last season.

“Hannah is very focused, team-oriented, hard-working and a coachable athlete,” Patterson said. “She loves to figure out how to go faster, train smarter and race to improve. She is so fun to coach.”

Nedder won the Little Hawkeye Conference title in the 100 fly last season and was part of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Patterson said Nedder’s goals in 2021 include breaking the meter 100 fly school record, lowering her personal-best time and placing at state.

“We are off to a great start,” Patterson said. “I think she can do all of those things.”

The other key returners are Ruggles, seniors Lauren Zaabel, Grace Benson and Maggie Garrett and junior Lillie Ray. Benson and Garrett are working their way back from an injury and senior Alexa Heiar is back this year and should make an impact, according to Patterson.

Heiar swam as a freshman but took the last two years off.

cludes Gracie Brown, Dani Dalasta, Emily Mills, Katie Schlosser, Hannah Schwickerath, Kallie Van Kley and Maggie Williams.

“This year’s team is close knit and hard working,” Patterson said. “The seniors have already exhibited outstanding leadership and are sharing life lessons with their teammates every day.”

Aside from qualifying for the state meet last year in the 400 freestyle re-

lay, Ruggles competed in two relays in the 2019 state meet.

Ray competed in all three relays in the 2019 state meet. She also won the LHC title in the 100 freestyle and was part of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays squads.

Joining Ray and Nedder on the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams was Benson.

Garrett swam on the 200 freestyle relay team and also was the LHC champ in the 50 freestyle.

Garrett and Zaabel both were part of the state-qualifying freestyle relay teams in 2019.

The 200 medley relay team of Nedder, Ruggles and Ray finished 14th that season.

The Aquagirls were third in the LHC last season, trailing Norwalk and Indianola.

“Our team goals include the LHC crown, the North Central Conference crown, beating Boone in a dual on Senior Night and sending three relays and individuals to state.”

“The girls return the same team minus our No. 3 runner from last year, so we have high expectations,” PCM cross country coach Eric Karr said.

“We added a freshman with experience and some others so I think we are looking to compete at a high level.”

PCM’s girls welcome back two returning state qualifiers for the first time in Karr’s tenure.

Junior Paige Steenhoek also is the first repeat state qualifier since Chris Ellens.

The Mustangs were 13-19 last year and 3-3 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

“There will be a lot of players playing different positions,” Vittetoe said.

“Our team won’t be real tall and a lot of them will be playing varsity for the first time. We should improve a lot throughout the season as we get more experience.”

There will be competition in the preseason for the remaining varsity spots.

Vittetoe said the libero position will likely be filled by junior RaeAnn Duinink to start the season. The other back row players include sophomore

“This group is experienced and ready to be pushed,” Karr said. “The training this year will be, and already has been, way more intense. I definitely think we can make a run for state, but we’ll primarily focus on steady improvement throughout the season.”

The PCM boys team features three runners. Senior Kyle Sanders is the lone returner and freshmen Jacob Buys and Carson Taylor complete the roster.

“Jacob Buys is the only one who has been here throughout the summer workouts,” Karr said.

“It will be fun to see how he transitions into the 5K race. At this point, the boys won’t be competing for any

The Mustang girls were second in the HOIC last year. Paige Steenhoek (third) and Koonce (10th) finished in the top 10, while DeVore (19th) and Sophia Steenhoek (20th) were top-20 finishers. Fairbanks and Baird also ran on that squad.

“We’ll for sure set a goal to win the conference meet,” Karr said. “It will take a lot of hard work to knock off Roland-Story, but these girls are pretty focused, dedicated and serious about the season so far.”

At the state qualifier, the Mustangs missed out on a state berth by just nine points. Paige Steenhoek and Koonce qualified for state in 11th and 13th. DeVore (30th), Sophia Steenhoek (44th), Taryn Steenhoek (45th) and Baird (48th) also ran that day.

Paige Steenhoek finished 52nd at state as a sophomore after placing 44th as a freshman. Koonce was 95th in Fort Dodge in her first prep season.

“I see no reason why they both can’t get there again with the right training and mindset,” Karr said.

Colfax-Mingo cross country coach Zach Tomas feels like his boys’ team has 10 or 11 runners that will score points for the varsity team this fall.

The Tigerhawks hope that depth will lead them to another South Iowa Cedar League championship.

“If we could score up to 10 or 11 kids, I think we’d be able to compete with some of the best teams in the state,” Tomas said.

“We’re deep and our lineup will likely change a lot throughout the season.”

The Tigerhawks won the SICL championship two years ago and placed third last year.

Gibson likely will be the team’s top runner, but the rest of the lineup is

very much unclear.

Aside from the four returners, the rest of the varsity team figures to be decided with sophomores Jared Lewis, Austin Lane and Kaden Dalton and freshmen Cesar Buenrostro, Owen Ament and Xavier Woods.

“The boys bring back four of our top seven from last year and add some very talented new additions,” Tomas said.

“I expect us to finish in the top three in the conference and might have a few individual runners who could make a push for a state meet berth.”

On the girls’ side, the roster features a good mix of experienced runners and some who are new to the sport.

It helps motivate the Tigerhawks in their quest to win the South Iowa Cedar League championship this fall.

The only thing left for the Tigerhawks to do is knock off Belle Plaine from the top of the SICL mountain.

“These seniors want the conference and they want it bad,” Grant said. “I use the words Belle Plaine in practice about 10 times per day. If they want it, they need to know they just don’t get it. They need to know that Belle Plaine wants to beat us and if they are practicing harder than us today, Belle Plaine is going to get it.”

Lester enters the season with 1,194 career assists. She had a team-best 425 assists last season and also led the team with 34 aces and was second with 219 digs. The Tigerhawks’ starting setter also finished with 34 kills and 15 blocks and her serve percentage was 96.6.

Lester’s 425 assists ranked third in the SICL. Van Dyke had a team-best 243 kills and 240 digs last season, which both ranked in the top four in the SICL. She also finished with 14 assists and 24 aces and her serving percentage was 89.6.

Van Dyke enters her final season with 626 career kills. And she should have plenty of help at the net this fall.

Junior Caylee Cunningham is back after ranking second on the team in kills last year.

Seniors McKayla Smith and Melany Vry will share duties as middle hitters.

And the other hitting spot is being contested by junior Felicity Woods, sophomores Madison Riddle and Mickayla Lind and freshman Trinity Smith.

Cunningham finished with 139 kills, 115 digs and 14 aces and her serve percentage was 83.5.

Vry ranked third on the team with 63 kills, first with 30 blocks and finished with 27 digs while serving the ball in at a 90.5 percent clip.

“I’m not concerned about that final hitting position, but I probably should be because it’s the spot on the floor that could be the difference in a win or loss on any given night,” Grant said. “If we

Underwood had 116 digs, 26 assists and 11 aces last season and had a serve percentage of 97.8. Rawlins tallied 56 digs and 13 assists and finished with a serve percentage of 87. Riddle played sparingly last season as a freshman, recording 13 digs.

“Carley is easily the best passer back there, and I like Abi attacking from the back row,” Grant said.

The Tigerhawks were 10-15 last year but reached the Gold Quad of the SICL after finishing 6-3 in conference play. Colfax-Mingo also won a postseason match but faced the eventual champion in the second round. Only two seniors were lost from that squad.

C-M started last season 1-4 and went 0-3 at its home tournament.

Grant expects a faster start in 2021.

“I hope more than anything that our overall season can be good enough to not have to play into the eventual state champion in the second round,” Grant said. “We need to start faster.”

Tigerhawks hope drop to Class A helps in win column

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor Colfax-Mingo’s football team did not get to celebrate a victory last season. But after losing a minimal number of seniors to graduation and a drop to Class A, the Tigerhawks hope to reverse course in 2021.

The Tigerhawks will go 33 deep and have six seniors this fall. Head coach Jeff Lietz knows a drop in class doesn’t guarantee success.

“That’s where we need to be with our numbers,” Lietz said.

“But we still have to play and there’s still lots of work to do. It does get us playing with teams of our size and levels the playing field.”

Colfax-Mingo was supposed to break in a brand new stadium this fall but construction on the state-of-the-art facility is behind. The Tigerhawks will play one true home game on their current field and the other three scheduled home games will move to Central College.

Senior captain Cole Bracewell is back at quarterback after taking over the position midway through last season. He finished with 667 passing yards, 156 rushing yards and six total touchdowns.

The new running back is sophomore Merritt McConeghey. Junior Nate Jones will get some carries in the backfield, too, and also will line up at receiver.

The other receivers are seniors Justin Myers and Colton Lind and sophomores Cael Bracewell, Trey Hockemeier, Joe Earles, Carter Gibson and Curtis Horras, who also is the team’s kicker.

Myers had 14 catches for 146 yards and a TD last year, while Lind hauled in six catches for 113 yards and one score. Myers and Lind are both captains.

Hockemeier rushed for 134 yards and two scores a year ago.

“We have to stay healthy as always, but we do have good depth at a lot of positions,” Lietz said. “We have more guys playing just one way this year, too.”

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor Baxter senior Elie Tuhn was a bit of an unknown coming into last season for the Bolts cross country team.

She didn’t take long to establish herself as one of the top runners in Class 1A though.

And in her final prep season, Tuhn hopes to return to the state meet and bring home another top-15 medal in 2021.

“Elie is an extremely talented athlete with an aberrantly strong work ethic,” Baxter cross country coach Dennis Vaughn said. “I don’t think anyone knows what she is capable of, including Elie.”

If Tuhn, who begins the season ranked 10th in 1A, returns to Fort Dodge this fall, she could very well do so with her younger sister along for the ride.

“We return three from last season and Lilie from previous seasons and we bring in two very talented freshmen,” Vaughn said.

“I think both Emie and Zoey are capable of making an impact from the start of the season and even more as the season progresses.”

The Baxter boys return junior Curtis Gliem and sophomores Logan Jones and Keenan Varner.

The rest of the roster includes senior Thomas Yocum and incoming freshmen Hudson Bethards, Logan defensive linemen and Lietz said Alexander, Aikin, Keeney and Aller will be in a rotation.

Schlosser and Aikin tallied 15.5 and 12.5 tackles, respectively, last fall.

The top returning tackler is Jones, who finished with 33 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and four sacks last fall. He’ll be one of the linebackers along with Myers, McConeghey, Earles, Dawson and Cael Bracewell.

Myers tallied 19.5 tackles, two fumble recoveries and one interception a year ago.

The secondary includes Cole Bracewell, Lind, Hockemeier, Gibson, sophomore Conner Wood and freshman

Rainsbarger and Matt Richardson.

“We will be young and the success of the team will depend on how much these new runners can contribute and how much the returning runners improve from last year.”

The Baxter girls finished second in the conference in 2020 with Elie Tuhn finishing second individually. Russell came in 16th and Hansen was 23rd.

Tuhn followed that up with a thirdplace finish at the state qualifier and a 15th place tally at the 1A state meet.

“We certainly would like to see her earn a medal at state again and reach an even higher position, but she has a lot of races before then and she should enjoy a very successful senior year if she stays healthy,” Vaughn said.

The Baxter boys were 13th in the conference a season ago. Varner and Jones both ran on varsity that day.

Vaughn said Richardson was very successful at the middle school level.

“Matt Richardson should be very competitive as a freshman after being all-conference in middle school,” Vaughn said.

“We do have a good nucleus back as well.”

Loaded Bolts seek return to 8-man playoffs

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor Senior Rory Heer is a three-time all-district player. And juniors Trice Clapper, Cody Damman, Cael Shepley and Jake Travis are all two-year starters for Baxter’s football team.

Throw in the fact that the Bolts have a program-best 29 players on its roster and head coach Rob Luther has a reason to be optimistic going into the 2021 season.

“We return guys all over the place,” Luther said.

“There are lots of guys with two to three years experience, and that’s always good to have.”

The 29 players is the most the Bolts have had since joining the 8-man ranks five years ago. And this year’s team could be as good as the one Baxter debuted with when it went 8-1 in 2017.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” Luther said. “We will be better than last year if we stay healthy. I don’t know if that means we’ll have a better record, but we should be a better team.”

Baxter went 4-5 last season and finished 2-4 in district play. That squad lost four seniors.

Heer’s back for one final season at running back after rushing for 1,229 yards and 16 touchdowns last year. He averaged eight yards per carry.

As a receiver, Heer hauled in 46 catches for 529 yards and six scores.

He also had 77.5 tackles and two fumble recoveries on defense. The Bolts play a 2-3-3 defense and Heer will play a hybrid linebacker/safety.

Damman is back as the team’s quarterback and will play cornerback on defense.

Last year, Damman threw for 954 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also rushed for 920 yards and 15 TDs with a 6.3 yards per carry average.

Defensively, Damman had totaled 63 tackles, one sack and two fumble recoveries.

“We’ll go as the quarterback position goes,” Luther said. “That’s how our teams have gone. And I will go to battle with that kid every day of the week.”

The other key returners include Clapper, Shepley, Travis and seniors Nate McMinamen and Grant Borts.

Bolts hope to buck the trend under new coaching staff

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor Baxter’s volleyball team has collected one winning season since becoming Bolts in 2017.

But the program hasn’t been worse than three games below .500 in any year.

Now, with a third head coach in three years, the Bolts hope to get back over .500 and co-head coaches Janessa Boley and Brooklyn Alber will have two seniors and six juniors to work with this season.

“Our practices are going really well,” Boley said. “We have a positive, fun group which work well together.”

The Bolts were 9-12 last year in Marie Stefani’s only season as head coach. That group went 4-1 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division, but the squad finished 0-2 at the conference tournament and lost in the opening round of the regional tournament.

The 2021 team is led by seniors Allison Colyn and Maggie Schabilion.

“Our two seniors are great, they really lead the team well,” Alber said. “We have great leadership for our younger players coming up.”

Colyn is back as the team’s setter after dishing out a team-high 365 assists last season. She also ranked second with 51 aces, fourth with 110 digs and finished with 36 kills and 15 blocks. Her serve percentage was 73.5.

Schabilion returns as one of the team’s top hitters after ranking second on the team last year with 80 kills. She also ranked third with 149 digs and served up 13 aces. Her serving percentage was 83.2.

“We have quite a bit of depth this year, so we have many options as we are still working through this early in the

Headlee tallied 51 digs and junior Kelcie Shedd served 45 times and had a serve percentage of 86.7.

“We think our junior and senior class players are great leaders and experienced,” Alber said. “They have strong skills and communication on the court.

We also feel they are always willing to help the other younger players when needed.”

Boley and Alber have enjoyed being co-head coaches and working with each other.

“We really like this method because we feel like nothing falls through the cracks and we have multiple perspectives,” Boley said.

The other Bolts who will help the defense are Borts and senior Carter Samson, junior Devan Fredregill and sophomore Cody Samson, who also will play wide receiver on offense. Borts tallied 44.5 tackles in 2020.

The biggest reason the Bolts have a program-best 29 players on the roster is because of an 11-player freshmen class.

Luther hopes to not have to use many of those freshmen this season though.

“If we’re as good as we hope to be, we may not need the freshmen,” Luther said. “We have 15-16 guys who think they’ll play and that’s better than having five and try-

ing to hide three like in past years. The guys are pushing each other. They have great attitudes and are in the right frame of mind. But we expected that with so many guys returning.”

The Bolts were closer than the sub-.500 record showed last year. They led or were tied at halftime in every game but one (BGM).

This year, if Baxter wants to win a district title it likely will have to go through 2020 state semifinalist Montezuma and BGM, which downed the Bolts 48-8 last year.

Montezuma and BGM are the only two teams on Baxter’s schedule to finish with a win-

ning record last season.

“The goal is to always win a district title so that will be the mindset,” Luther said. “We are not deep on the lines, but we have a lot of depth at other key places.”

The Bolts will play six of their eight regular season games at home because of a couple schedule changes.

Woodward Academy is playing all road games and Collins-Maxwell shifted its home game against the Bolts to next year due to construction on the team’s home field.

By Troy Hyde Sports Editor Junior Greenlee Smock made an instant impact for Lynnville-Sully’s cross country team when she was a freshman two years ago.

Smock won the South Iowa Cedar League title and finished 10th in Class 1A at the state cross country meet in her first prep season.

Last year, Smock repeated as SICL champion and grabbed another state medal in Fort Dodge.

In 2021, the goal is to move up the ladder at state and win a third consecutive conference championship.

Smock leads a group of seven on this year’s Hawk girls team. The roster also features senior Callista Hackert, juniors Kendra Fikse and Kinsley Tice, sophomore Brooke Conover and freshmen Olivia Norrish and Corrina Rozendaal.

“I am happy we have seven girls to have a full squad,” Arkema said. “The girls were the conference runner-up a year ago and graduated two strong runners so the task will be to get people to step up and try to compete at that high a level again.”

The boys’ squad is led by junior James Gruver, who qualified for his first state meet last season. The boys team goes five deep with juniors Zach Morningstar, Gentry Walston and Evan Fikse and freshman Vance Scholten.

“James, Zach and Gentry were all-conference last year, and all three are capable of exceeding last season’s finish,” Arkema said. “It’s been fun to see Zach’s commitment this summer as he demonstrated upperclassmen leadership during summer sessions.

“It would be great to get some athletes out on the boys’ side, but I think

Smock loves to chase and run down runners in front of her while keeping a strong pace early in the race. Arkema wants his top runner to be more competitive earlier in the race.

“I really want her to focus on how competitive she can be at the start of the race and be up front with the leaders earlier,” Arkema said. “She has incredible closing speed and endurance.

There are just a few tweaks we need to make.”

The Hawk boys were fourth in the SICL last year despite Gruver, Morningstar and Walston each finishing in the top 10.

“Having Greenlee as a two-time state qualifier and James who qualified a year ago helps us from the standpoint of the rest of the team seeing that experience for them and recognizing what it was for them to compete at a high level,” Arkema said. “It kind of helps set a bar for everyone, not necessarily to try and become a state qualifier, but to work hard and give the effort to get the best from yourself and help make our team better.”

Hawks hope to overcome graduation hits

Last year’s Lynnville-Sully volleyball team captured its seventh straight winning season, won a postseason game and reached the Silver Quad of the South Iowa Cedar League.

But seven seniors are gone and the Hawks are forced to reset their roster with a slew of new players.

But that hasn’t stopped second-year head coach Kyra Smith from being ex-

cited about another season.

“There is definitely something exciting about having an entire ‘new’ team, but there are always challenges as well,” Smith said. “We have a team which is not only having to work on and improve their volleyball skills, but they also are learning how to play alongside each other as well.

“It creates some challenges but brings about a lot of new and exciting energy as well.”

Senior Aliya James is the top returner after finishing fourth on the team with 141 digs.

Senior Lily Zylstra also got court time last year, finishing with eight kills, 40 digs and 10 aces. Her serve percentage was 89.2.

Hawks looks to get back on winning track

After a four-year run of winning at least seven games, Lynnville-Sully’s football team has taken a step back the past few seasons.

The No. 1 priority for the Hawks in the offseason and preseason is doing whatever it takes to put the program back into the conversation in Class A. “We want to return to being that team who always has a chance to beat you,” L-S head coach Mike Parkinson said. “We want to get back to being competitive. We want to be back in the playoffs.”

The Hawks went 1-8 in 2019 and 1-5 in 2020. They’ll try to regain momentum with a large senior class, several key returners and talented underclassmen.

Parkinson said fall camp has gone well so far. There are a lot of position battles still taking place and guys have lots of competition.

Back at quarterback for the Hawks is junior Conner Maston, who threw for 212 yards and three touchdowns last fall.

The returning running backs are junior Kyle Squires and sophomores Corder Noun Harder and Max Mintle.

“They both give us a new wrinkle on the offensive line and have done everything we’ve asked of them,” Parkinson said.

The rest of the potential varsity offensive linemen include seniors Noah Johnson, Owen Norrish, Gage Elscott and Miles Mintle and juniors Tyson Jansen, Jager Huyser and Chase Maddison. Most of these guys also are competing for playing time on the defensive line.

“Practices are going well so far,” Parkinson said. “The guys are working hard. We are trying to develop leadership and want them to rise to the challenge.”

The non-district schedule includes two 1A programs in Pleasantville (5-3 last year) and East Marshall (2-6).

L-S will play in Class A District 6 with North Mahaska (3-5), Wayne (05), Madrid (3-4), Colfax-Mingo (0-8 in 1A), Ogden (4-3 in 1A) and Belle Plaine (6-3).

Smith expects defending SICL champion Belle Plaine to once again be in the mix for the league championship.

“Belle Plaine will be tough,” Smith said. “Our ‘rivals’ Montezuma and (North Mahaska) always put together some good teams, too.

There are many new coaches in the SICL so it will be an interesting year.”
