Weathering the storm

Local co-ops work through pandemic conditions while still providing essential services

COVID-19 has left no stone unturned when spreading through all of society. Local co-ops have not only had to find a new way of business because of the pandemic, but also had to weather the derecho storm.

“It’s been interesting,” Two Rivers Cooperative General Manager Tracy Gathman said. “We started out last mid-March and everybody was hopeful that it wouldn’t be a big deal but then of course as we went on a little further it become apparent that it was going to be fairly substantial.”

When it became apparent that COVID-19 was a serious issue and was here to stay for at least the immediate future, Gathman said the company started to make changes to help keep employees and customers as safe as possible.

“We did send a couple of letters out to our membership, talked to our employees about trying to do the best we possibly could to social distance, asking customers to call our offices and we would be more than happy to get them what they needed rather than have them come into the office all of the time,” he said.

Creating distance is not the norm for co-ops, often used as a “hang out” spot for employees and customers. The new requirements to conduct business with ample space between parties was new experience for the businesses.

“We had our office people in the office, our outside guys stayed outside and we had to communicate and work together that way,”

Co-ops throughout central Iowa felt and continue to feel the effects of COVID-19, especially with customers who regularly stopped by.

Heartland Co-op Location Manager Brandon Blommers said. “For a while, we were keeping the customers outside, as well, so it was mostly through phone calls or emails that we had to do the business.”

At Two Rivers, sales staff were pulled off the road and started contacting customers by phone. When possible, the office would take orders and fulfill them without ever having the customers leave their vehicle.

“It was just nowhere close to what we want to do and the way we want to provide service but we also understood as essential workers and as essential as agri

culture is, we didn’t have a choice,” Gathman said. “We never did shut down our offices. We just asked people if they needed something, we would appreciate it if they call in and say ‘hey, I’ll be there in five minutes, we need four bags of this feed and three bags of that feed,’ then we would just go out to the dock and throw it on the back of their truck for them.

That way we could continue to provide those kind of services.”

Both locations felt fortunate to have little issue with COVID-19 within the offices. Both made it through the spring and summer without any major outbreaks.

No Heartland Co-op locations had to go down because of the pandemic, Blommers said, with business running as usual with the modifications. Gathman said at his Two Rives locations there were only a couple of instances with positive cases.

“We did go to a heavy recommendation of masks.

We’ve put stations up with disinfectant at every door at each location. We did put some disposable masks out for those who may show up at our offices and they didn’t have one or bring one. We put up the plexiglass in the offices, a lot of little things,” Gathman said.

CONTINUED FROM 4 There were other consequences of the pandemic that did hit the co-ops harder. Along with grain, Two Rivers provides fuel and with travel greatly decreased during the last year, the effects were felt in more than one way.

“We saw a significant drop starting last April at our gas pumps as people started to pull back on their travel. The other thing we saw significant was we do provide fuel for PCM, Pella and Pella Christian and once the school buses shut down, that was a fair amount of gallons of fuel business that basically disappeared overnight,” Gathman said. “Another thing we did see that I don’t think a lot of people realize, is that when the drop in usage of gasoline happened, we also saw significant declines in the usage of ethanol. What happens there is then we had ethanol plants shut down or slow down in a significant manor and that affected the movement of corn across the state, which impacted pricing.”

Gathman continued that these challenges may not have been as widely known because they weren’t the “hit you in the face, shut down a business type of deal.”

Nevertheless, they created an economic strain on the co-op that was directly related to the pandemic.

As if dealing with COVID-19 wasn’t enough, the State of Iowa felt the impact left by the August derecho storm. Unprecedented crop and facility damage was done as the weather swept through, leaving its mark for the weeks and months to come.

“We lost a lot of bushels, we lost bins because of damage, losing a lot of space, which means you also lose the income you can make off all of that,” Blommers said of the Heartland locations.

After the dust settled from the storm, concerns about the health crisis remained ever present.

Like many people and businesses, the co-ops are now waiting their turn to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Nei-

ther Heartland nor Two Rivers will be requiring employees receive the shot but have provided information and recommendations on the next step to move forward in the pandemic.

“We are hopeful that a high percentage of people will get those. We’ve made a letter available to our employees with our high recommendation that they do get the vaccines as soon as they come available to essential workers in agriculture because we feel that it is important that we protect our employees, our customers, our co-workers and the general public around us,” Gathman said. “It is just a situation where we all need to do our part to protect those around us.”

Blommers said Heartland Co-op is working to secure vaccines for any employees interested in receiving one as soon as they are available.

Even while dealing with limitations brought on by the pandemic, the co-ops are looking forward to the upcoming farming season. Hopefully, by the time the crops are being harvested from the fields, the state of the pandemic is more in hand and everyday life has returned to a semblance of “normal.”

“This was the (Two Rivers’) 100 year anniversary, so we were unable to have the celebration that we had planned,” Gathman said. “We are looking at it to have a celebration the next year for 100 plus one.”

SNOWED UNDER: make farmers’ work

now blankets farmers’ fields, but there’s still plenty of work to do. For Prairie City farmer Richard Roorda, it all depends on whether the climate will let up enough for him to do what he wants — or needs — to do. But the subzero temperatures and that darn wind aren’t making his chores any easier.

“It’s so dang cold outside that if you don’t have a warm place to do it, you really can’t do it,” Roorda said. “I think I could take the cold better when I was younger.”

Roorda knows there are things around the farm he ought to be doing, but the idea of working in an unheated machine shed is not the most inviting proposition; especially when the snow and ice accumulated from several winter storms have barely even begun to melt away. Still, Roorda braves the cold when he has to.

Oftentimes he completes his cattle chores and quickly retreats to some place warm, whether it’s his home office or his workshop converted from an old hog house. All this bad weather gives Roorda an excuse to finish his office work, tinker around the house or pass the time watching YouTube videos.

Anything to fill his time while he waits for the extreme cold to pass, or, at the very least, for the climate to moderate.

Perhaps if the wind dies down, the sun comes out and there’s no precipitation, Roorda might be out there trimming the tree sprouts forming around the borders and ditches of his cornfields.

Of course, farmers can always check up on their machinery or make repairs to buildings. Again, the cold can make it difficult for some to get started on those particular projects. Livestock are sure to keep farmers like Roorda busy during the winter with twice-a-day feedings and other regular maintenance.

open and make sure they got a dry place to lay down, so I try to scatter bedding every couple days and put a new bale in the bale ring every two or three days — that type of stuff,” Roorda said. “You gotta make sure they’re OK and as comfortable as you IOWA A AL G TR can get ‘em.”

Roorda said there is an upside to the cold temCOVERSTORY peratures, and that’s the dryness. If it was 30 degrees and raining, that could be a lot worse. The cattle, he added, have thick coats that do help in keeping them warm, but when they’re chilly and wet it could pose a real problem. These are always things to keep in mind.

Like the snow, for instance. In some parts of Central Iowa the snow is deep enough to make driving a tractor difficult. Roorda said sometimes the snow is too deep and the temperatures too cold for farmers like himself to haul manure out of the cattle lot. When they can, the snow could still be a challenge to trek through.

“It’s difficult to even pull the spreader through the field because the tractor just couldn’t pull it through the deep snow,” Roorda said. “It was like driving through sand, really soft and loose sand. I just couldn’t move.”

This is also a time when farmers could meet with their fertilizer and chemical dealers or develop crop protection plans for the year, among other things.

So it’s not like farmers are going on vacation or taking it easy during the winters.

Predictability is not always on the side of Iowa farmers. Usually there are so many factors to account for that it makes it almost impossible to determine how a harvest season will look. Even now, it’s way too early to tell. Roorda acknowledges farmers will hope and plan for the best

harvest no matter what.

“You always plan for a good year, because if you plan for a bad year you’re likely to have a bad year,” he said.

Last year certainly wasn’t easy for farmers. After an amazing start to the planting season, a drought threatened to starve fields of moisture during an important growing cycle. To make matters worse, the August derecho destroyed several acres of crops across central and eastern Iowa.

The storm was a devastating blow to farmers, who can’t seem to catch a break these past few years. Baxter farmer Troy Wesselink said the derecho didn’t outright flatten his fields, but it did bend the cornstalks to low angles and required some different combining practices to harvest the grain.

“The biggest challenge is just watching for stuff in the field. We found a piece of tin the other day. There wasn’t a house within a mile,” Wesselink said in October 2020. “But the biggest problem is just wondering what you’re going to run through the machine next.”

Problems always seem to come up

during harvest season. In past years, farmers told Central Iowa Ag Mag their issues with wet terrain and other factors causing them to run behind schedule. By the end of the 2019 season, rural Colfax farmer Ross Wasson said it was one he and others would always remember.

“But one that we kind of want to forget,” Wasson said of the late planting season, propane shortage and high moisture levels of 2019.

Could farmers see a repeat of 2019 or 2020?

Obviously, they would prefer if 2021 did not come with uncontrollable challenges. Roorda said farmers will probably stick with doing what they would like to do and then take on the challenges as they come.

“Everything’s pretty wide open right now.”

Applications available for Century and Heritage Farms

Every year, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship encourages families to apply for the Century and Heritage Farm Program, which formally recognizes families who have owned their farms for 100 years and 150 years. The program was created by IDALS and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.

“The Century and Heritage Farm program is a great way to recognize the strength and resiliency of Iowa’s multi-generation farm families, especially after an exceptionally challenging year,” Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said in a press release earlier this year.

Typically, the Century and Heritage Farm certificates are presented and distributed to families at the Iowa State Fair every year in August. In 2020, a small ceremony was held regionally since the fair was canceled because of the pandemic.

Applicants could also wait until the 2021 fair to receive their markers.

In order to be eligible for a Century Farm certification, a farm must be consecutively owned within the same family for 100 years or more. At least 40 acres of the original holding Iowa farmland needs to be owned by that family. The present owner must be related to a person who owned the land 100 years ago.

For Heritage Farm certifications, applicants must have at least 40 acres of the original holding of Iowa farmland and must be consecutively owned within the same family for 150 years or more by the

end of year applying. Again, the present owner must be related to a person who owned the land 150 years ago.

Ceremonies recognizing the 2021 Century and Heritage Farm families will be held at the Iowa State Fair on Aug. 19-20 in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion.

“I always look forward to celebrating along with the families and hearing stories about their incredible farming legacies. I am very grateful for the investments they make to protect our rich farmland and their continued commitment to our state’s agriculture community,” Naig said.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the Century Farm Program and the 15th anniversary of the Heritage Farm Program, IDALS said. To date, the department of agriculture says more than 20,000 farms have been recognized as Century Farms; more than 1,000 have been designated as Heritage Farms.

How to apply for the Century and Heritage Farm Program To apply for the 2021 certifications, IDALS encourages families to download the application at www.iowaagriculture. gov/century-and-heritage-farm-program.

Farmers invited to enroll in Farm Bill assistance programs

With a March 15 enrollment deadline, Iowa farmers have limited time to decide if they want to enroll in assistance programs provided through the 2018 Farm Bill.

Staff members of the Iowa State Extension Office have been hosting a series of virtual Farm Bill meetings since January.

The purpose is to help farmers understand the benefits for which they could enroll and ways to calculate potential payouts should crop yields be lower than projections.

Producers can enroll in Price Loss Coverage (PLC) to provide income support to covered commodities at levels above the price protection offered by the marketing assistance loan program’s loan rates. It is price based and is selected by a base crop on the farm.

Farmers can enroll in the Agriculture Risk Coverage which is a revenue based program. There are two variations to this program. The first option is the ARC-County (ARC-CO) program, which offers shallow loss revenue protection at the county level and can be elected on a crop-by-crop basis.

“You’re going to look at your county as a whole to determine benchmark and actual revenues that’s going by base crop on the farm. So, you can choose if you have corn and soybeans on your farm for base crops, you can choose one and/or both,” Agricultural Program Specialist Katie Kramer said.

The second option is ARC-Individual/Farm which provides shallow loss revenue protection at an individual farm level across all farms enrolled.

“That’s going to be elected by the farm, and that’s going to be strictly based on your production yields specifically to your farms. If you elect multiple farms into ARC-IC, it’ll be weight-

ed across both farms or all three farms or however many you elect into,” Kramer said.

To be eligible for payment, producers must complete the enrollment contract for each of their farms. If a multi-year enrollment ISU Extension Image contract was completed in 2019, and there have been no changes, producers are not required to complete another enrollment contract for 2021, according to the ISU Extension.

With the ongoing health crisis, the Iowa Farm Service Agency office hours may still be impacted. It would be best to contact the local office via phone or email to discuss the options that fit your needs.

Students learn how to raise, tag, release monarch butterflies

Maintaining a sustainable monarch population has been at the forefront of many initiatives put forth by the Iowa State Extension offices around the state and the midwest.

Lynne Campbell, professional development specialist at the ISU Extension and Outreach, has crafted many educational units to teach students of all ages the importance of pollinators.

She had worked with Newton High School Biology Teacher Courtney Wolken in the past.

In the spring when school buildings were closed, Wolken took the time to write a Monarch Conservation Unit for high school students. She then contacted Campbell to help make the unit happen.

“Monarchs are beautiful

pollinator insects that need our help,” Wolken said.

Wolken teamed up with two other Iowa teachers, Jenn Wells at Newell-Fonda and Jennifer Hobbs at Keota for the research project. Wolken said, “Without the collaboration the learning opportunity would not have made it into the classroom.” “(Campbell) provided not only professional knowledge in this field but also wrote the grants to fund our equipment, organized the materials, connected us with other professionals in the field and answered any questions we had,” she said.

The students raised the monarchs in the classroom and a biotent, which was erected in the courtyard at the Newton High School. Students tagged and released the butterflies to make their migration journey. All of

the data contributed to ISU Extension’s Monarch Watch project.

Despite the challenges of the fall semester, Wolken deemed the project a success. Students were able to gain practical experience caring for the butterflies from egg to wings.

“Students gained practice rearing monarch eggs/caterpillars in two different environments — classroom and biotent — caring for plants,

learning about factors that influence monarch fitness, integrating technology to test their fitness and writing a CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning model),” Wolken said.

With more people studying and learning about the benefits of the monarch butterflies, the better chance the population of the insect will grow. For more information about conservation and education efforts, visit monarchwatch.org.
