For the second year in a row, the Rockford Bell Credit Union in conjunction with the Village of Mt. Morris Economic Development Corp. sponsored the prize money for the contest and winners. The most uniquely-decorated tree winner was to the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren with Pat Miller receiving the $100 prize for the church. The most traditionally-decorated tree went to Amanda Wolfe of Mt. Morris for the second $100 prize. The best overall tree winner was the Mt. Morris Senior Center with the center’s director Melissa Nicholson receiving the $100 prize for the center. The event was sponsored by John Hanson, CEO of the Rockford Bell Credit Union.

Eighth graders unveil homemade apps

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A homework tracker. A calorie tracker. A memory game.

These are some of the examples of applications that eighth graders at David L. Rahn Junior High School in Mt. Morris made themselves from scratch in the school’s new App Creators course.

The nine-week course allowed students to create and problem solve using the MIT App Inventor software in combination with a curriculum called Project Lead The Way. The most recent project puts this students in a scenario whereby they create an app solving a real-world problem. The students unveiled their projects on Thursday, Dec. 19.

“I think in our tech world that we live in, it only makes sense that they have a class that teaches them how computers and apps work, the basic idea of putting these into action,” Nate Rogers, the instructor of the course, said. “For them, it makes it relevant to their life. And who doesn’t want to learn things that are relevant.”

DLR Junior High is a part of the Oregon School District. The idea to implement the course came when Heidi Deininger, the district’s high school principal, had her child in a similar specialized course through Project Lead The Way at another school.

The Oregon School District is now aligned with PLTW’s computer science program. Rogers had to attend a ‘rigorous’ five-day program in order to be certified to teach it. The program condensed nine weeks into five days and overwhelmed the teachers, but it was worth it.

“It exposes every kid to that basic

introduction of coding,” DLR Principal Kip Crandall said. “And when they get into it and realize how cool it is, it probably unlocks the potential that some kids didn’t know they had. Especially targeting young females in the field of technology is super important to us.”

The MIT App Inventor software is free. The district’s largest expense for this program was the purchase of tablets that were compatible with the software and other tech at the school. The students’ apps can be uploaded onto the Google Play Store to be downloaded by anybody.

Rogers is not yet certified to teach the precursor course to App Creators, but will be next after next summer. He and his students will both be better prepared after that. This semester’s class was ‘sink or swim’ for the first couple of weeks due to the difficulty of learning coding.

“Some of them were so frustrated at the beginning because it was hard to understand,” Rogers said. “Now they’ve gotten to a point where they’re like, ‘I really like this.’ That part has meant the world.”

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A film plastic recycling program run by Indivisible Mt. Morris/Oregon has already donated one public bench and is nearing completion on donating another.

In a recycling program partnership with composite-decking company Trex, one bench will be donated to a local nonprofit for each time 500 pounds of film plastic is collected and recycled. The political action group was looking for a way to clean up and help the community after hearing about a similar program in Polo.

“This bridges the political divide,”

Indivisible member Beverly Opalka said. “Plastic is getting into waterways and into the bodies of animals and even humans. We need to seriously work on our plastic disposal.”

The first bench was donated to Mt. Morris for a local municipal park. The second bench, for which donations are nearing 500 pounds, is designated for the Oregon Rock River Center.

“We’ve had quite a good response,” Opalka said. “An amazing, overwhelming response. It takes quite an effort, but I think the many dropoff sites helped.”

The drop-off locations are at the Mt. Morris Public Library, the Oregon Public Library, the Mt. Morris

Senior Citizens Center, the Rock River Center, Mt. Morris City Hall and Curves in Oregon.

Film plastic must be clean and dry. The plastic needs to be well packed. The group asks that donors make knots in bags and tie up the collection bag pushing the air out as much as possible.

Examples of eligible donations are grocery bags, bread bags, case overwrap, dry cleaning bags, newspaper sleeves, ice bags, wood pellet bags, ziplock and other reclosable bags, produce bags, bubble wrap, salt bags, cereal bags and shipping plastic with air released out of it.

The user enters assignments they’re given and when they’re due. The app sends reminders about assignments with the specified page number and problems to be done.

Danyelle Bettner and Kennedy Black made a self-help app for students who could be victims of bully-

ing. The app shows different types of bullying. Users enter the frequency of their harassment and information about how it happened and are then provided with resources.

“We chose this one because we figured a lot of people get bullied and have stress at home and at school and in public,” Bettner said. “We just wanted to help people.”

“When you talk to area schools, they don’t have something like this,” Crandall said. “We’re super proud of our kids.”

Senior dining site to open in Rock River Center

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Rock River Center in Oregon will soon be serving as a congregate dining site for senior citizens starting Jan. 6.

In an effort to feed older adults in Ogle County, Lifescape will be serving meals at Rock River Center Monday through Friday from 11:30 am to noon. Through partnerships like this one, Lifescape is able to help older adults gain access to hot nutritious meals and social opportunities within their communities.

There used to be a congregate meal site at one of the restaurants in Mt. Morris, but it has since closed down.

“The only options for people other than going to Rochelle in Ogle County was to get home-delivered meals,” Rock River Center Executive Director Jamie Nobis said. “That doesn’t provide them with the health benefits of socialization.”

Lifescape works in partnership with senior centers, churches, high rises and restaurants to offer multiple dining sites in Winnebago, Boone, Ogle and Lee Counties.

River Center and serving it there. Organizers are hopeful that 30-35 people per day will soon be coming in for meals once the program is in full swing.

Rock River Center has a regularly scheduled potluck luncheons on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month. The Etnyre Foundation also sponsors free food on the first Friday of every month.

The Rock River Center will not host congregate dining on the potluck days or free food Fridays.

For January and February there will not be congregate dining at Rock River Center on the following days: Jan. 3, 14, 22, 28 and Feb 7, 11,17 and 25.

“We have this cafe area,” Nobis said. “It’s not a restaurant that operates on a daily basis like when it was built. It seemed the most logical place in Ogle County since we’re serving the same individuals funded primarily by the department of aging.”

Participants must be 60 or older or accompanied by a spouse who is 60 or older. Interested participants need to call and make reservations by 10:00 am the day before they intend on eating at the Rock River Center. To schedule a reservation, call (815) 963-1609 and let Lifescape know the days you plan on dining.

Rock River Center offers transportation within Ogle County. Participants can schedule a ride to their meal by calling Rock River Center at (815) 732-3252 at least 24-hours in advance.

“Get up, get dressed, get out and you’ll live a longer life,” Nobis said. “That’s the message we’re trying to get out to people.”

Rock River Center is located at 810 S. 10th St. in Oregon.

$1,020 raised for food pantries

The 15th annual community Christmas concert presented at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mt. Morris, Dec. 8, raised $1,020 in donations for two local food pantries: Loaves and Fish in Mt. Morris and Lifeline in Oregon. Nearly 200 people attended the free concert presented by instrumentalists and singers from throughout Northwest Illinois.

Thanks to financial supporters covering the cost of the event, all $1,020 from the freewill offering was donated to the food pantries. At right, Oregon band director, Andy Eckardt, leads a pre-concert woodwind quintet. Reed was the 1840 census taker in Ogle County Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Lucas Reed was the only man recording the Ogle County inhabitants in 1840. The count was to begin on June 1, 1840 and completed on October 20, 1840.

It must have taken many days using a horse as transportation.

There were few roads to follow while searching for the next citizen or family.

Although the first census in Ogle County, it was the sixth Federal Census of the United States. Later census lists in Ogle County showed that a man in each township did the counting.

The Illinois legislature created Ogle County in 1836 that included land where Lee County is today.

We are accustomed to referring to certain areas of Ogle County by township, such as Oregon Township, Byron Township, etc. From 1836-1849 Ogle was divided into six precincts. The six precincts were Bloomingville, Oregon City, Grand Detour, Buffalo Grove, Dixon and Inlet.

Dixon and Inlet Precincts were primarily in what is now Lee County.

It’s interesting to imagine the three county commissioners looking over an old map of this area trying to establish boundaries for the precincts. How accurate were these maps showing the 3rd Principal Meridian located in the eastern part of Ogle County (now Meridian Road) and the 4th Meridian located just west of Ogle County in Whiteside County.

The township lines running east and west do not line up at the 3rd Principal Meridian. Just a reminder the northern border of Ogle County is Montague, Severson and Edson Roads.

Our west boundary is Brookville Road, our east boundary appropriately named East Line Road, and on the south Guler and Pilgrim Roads. Oregon Precinct covered about one half of what is now Ogle County. This same area today is Oregon-Nashua, Pine Rock, Lafayette, Flagg, Dement and part of Mt. Morris, Rockvale, Pine Creek, White Rock and Lynnville townships.

Early on the Ogle County Board then called The County Commissioners Court consisted of three members, Smith Gilbrath, Oliver Kellogg and James Dixon.

On this 1840 census 68 names are listed as living in the Oregon City Precinct. Guess what, only men show up on this census. Why would they include women?

Before the 1840 election you could purchase land in Ogle County from the government east of the 3rd Principal Meridian in 1839. All you had to do was jump on your horse and ride to the government land office in Galena.

One year after the election in 1841 the rest of the county was for sale at Dixon. Before this only claims could be made.

Before the Oregon Claim Society there were many problems arising from claims. Different methods

After claims or farms are marked out, protecting societies were formed for the purpose of protecting each other in holding claims and

Our chances of a white Christmas have diminished greatly. Even though the scenery is not what we had expected, our spirits have not been dampened.

We greet each morning in Advent with excitement and anticipation for God’s great gift. Our God is an awesome god.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Judy Nettz. Kent Nettz helped greet us by visiting with our church family. Melissa Rockwood and her daughters, Katelyn and Laura, lit the fourth Advent candle for joy.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young friends, Katelyn, Laura, Harper, and Amelia. Charlotte shared a picture book that featured the Christmas hymn, “Silent Night.”

This past Monday evening, Charlotte and I took a short trip to Woodstock in the evening. We attended a Christmas event at the Woodstock

Opera House. They were showing the movie “White Christmas” as a sing-a-long.

Before the movie, Charlotte and I enjoyed the Christmas lights that decorated the trees and gazebos in the square.

Once everyone was seated, the audience was invited to participate in a movie trivia contest. Charlotte finished in the top ten.

The movie theater was filled with singing and laughter for the evening. Several of us even repeated some of the familiar lines.

The event started out as single night event and was expanded into four sold-out nights.

For part of the week, I traveled to Wisconsin for work. On my way home, I received a message from Matt that he reenlisted in the Marines for four more years. He sent a couple of pictures from the ceremony. The smile on his face is my reassurance that he is happy on this path.

This will be an exciting week for families in Pine Creek with many travelers heading to the area. This morning, Doug Hamilton, grandson of Jean Cunningham, joined us for church. He is home for the holidays, staying with his parents, Tom and Jane Hamilton.

Our church will be hosting our annual Christmas Eve Service on Tuesday evening at 7:00pm. After

Pastor Charlotte finished her sermon series “In Light and Darkness” for the Advent season. At the close of her sermon, she asked the congregation to reflect on the conversations of the shepherds as they traveled to see the Savior.

I am not a seasoned traveler, however, I have taken several trips by

plane, train, and car. Before nearly every trip, I get nervous.

I worry about the things that can go wrong. I think about arriving on time, especially to catch a plane.

The shepherds may have had concerns about traveling, but they were determined to get to the manger.

The thought of getting to my destination has always helped me overcome any worry.

I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas as you celebrate with friends and family.

Auditions will be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 7-8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pinecrest Grove library, 500 Evergreen Lane, Mt. Morris for the March production of The Performing Arts Guild’s “Flowers for Algernon”.

Performances will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 20-22 at the Pinecrest Grove Theatre.

This is the compelling story of Charlie, a mentally challenged

man, and the strange interweaving of his life with that of Algernon, a mouse. This is a different kind of play: poignant, romantic, funny and tragic, but with the hope of man’s indomitable spirit.

The cast consists of nine male and ten female roles. Materials will be provided at the audition, so come early to review the readings.

Freedom Lutheran Church is moving to a new location

Bank’s food drive brings in 1,407 pounds of food In conjunction with Stillman Bank’s annual Christmas Open House, the bank also held a food drive to benefit area families this Christmas collecting 1,407 pounds of non-perishable food items during the weeklong event.

Now in its 12th year, the bank’s annual food drive has collected more than 12,000 pounds of food since its inception in 2008.

The Christmas Food Drive kicked off at all Stillman Bank locations on Friday, Dec. 6 and continued through Saturday, Dec. 14.

Donations were made just in time for Christmas to several area food

pantries including Bread of Life pantry in Stillman Valley, People Helping People in Byron, Lifeline in Oregon, Hand in Hand in Rochelle, Old Stone Church pantry in Rockton and the Veteran’s Drop-In Center in Rockford.

Freedom Lutheran Church is moving to a new home.

After several years of sharing space with First Presbyterian Church in Oregon, Freedom is moving across the street to share space with Oregon United Methodist Church.

The first worship service in our new home will be Jan. 5, at the traditional time of 5:45 p.m. with fellowship to follow.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle will be at the First Saturday Community Coffee in Chana on Saturday, Jan. 4 from 9 to 11 a.m.

He will discuss department activities, explain policies of the department and any new laws.

The event will be held at the Chana United Methodist Church, 606 S. Main St., Chana. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Hannah Badgett will present wildlife photographs and commentary about her summer as a research assistant in northwest Greenland during the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society’s meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

While in Greenland she banded several species of birds including puffins, peregrines and ptarmigans.

Exelon Generation donates to local communities Exelon Generation employees and the Exelon Foundation are donating more than $4.6 million to support charitable organizations in the communities around its power plants.

Employees pledged more than $3.1 million to 849 different charities in their local communities this year.

And for every dollar employees pledged, the Exelon Foundation donated 50 cents to their local United Way, bringing the total donation to more than $4.6 million.

At Byron Generating Station, employees pledged more than $185,000 to dozens of local charities during this year’s Employee Giving

Campaign.

U of I Extension announces plants of the year After the polar vortex of last winter, many are wondering if those cold blustery temperatures will return this season to affect our plants in Illinois.

According to winter predictions, and University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator Bruce J. Black, this winter should be cold, but with enough snow, plants will be successfully insulated.

“When planning your garden, it is essential to choose plants that can tolerate our cold temperatures and still have blossoms all year long,” Black said. “After mapping out cold-hardy perennials you currently have planted, begin to think about what new plants could be added to your landscape. A great starting place is the All-America Selections.”

All-America Selections is a non-profit organization that releases several trialed plants each year as AAS Winners.

All-America Selections tests new varieties every year at their 80 private and public trial sites located around the United States and Canada. Currently, there are five trial locations in Illinois (three northern, one central, one southern).

Independent judges, who are professional horticulturists in geographically diverse areas, evaluate trial entries against comparison plants.

The results and observations are compiled and winners are chosen. For the best plants suited to the area, Illinois residents should look for Great Lakes winners or National winners on the AAS Winners lists.

Six 2020 AAS Winners have been announced, which include four vegetables and two flowers.

They are: Cucumber, Green Light F1 (Cucumis sativusvar. Green Light F1): Green Light is a vining cucumber, with a plant height of 80 inches producing 40 3.5-inch sweet and crisp fruits per plant. National Vegetable Winner.

Tomato, Celano F1 (Solanum lycopersicum var.

Celano F1): Celano is a patio-type grape tomato with a bushy habit, producing uniform oblong sweet fruits. With excellent late-blight tolerance, Celano is considered to be sweet, with a phenomenal yield. Ideal for container gardens, but may require trellising and some pruning according to the judges’ observations. National Vegetable Winner.

Tomato, Early Resilience F1 (Solanum lycopersicum var. Early Resilience F1): Early Resilience is a determinate, uniform, Roma-type, great for cooking and canning. Judges noted Early Resilience was very resistant to blossom-end rot and other diseases, and was overall one of the healthier plants and fruits in the trial. National Vegetable Winner.

Watermelon, Mambo F1 (Citrullus lanatus var.

Mambo F1): Mambo is a round, dark green rinded watermelon averaging 11 pounds per fruit. It doesn’t overripen and yields well in cool, cloudy weather. Judges said it is easy to grow, due to high seed germination rates and healthy vines.

Seventy-five days to maturity from transplants.

National Vegetable Winner.

Echinacea, Sombrero® Baja Burgundy (Echinacea hybrid var. Sombrero® Baja Burgundy): Sombrero® Baja Burgundy is a beautiful violet-red coneflower that was noted for its hardiness, sturdy branching, and beautiful habit.

Aralia cordata “Sun King” was voted the 2020 perennial plant of the year.

Rudbeckia, American Gold Rush (Rudbeckia x American Gold Rush): American Gold Rush is a compact, dome-shaped black-eyed Susan with narrow 2-inch hairy foliage. Bred for its resistance to Septoria leaf spot, this July to September bloomer shows no signs of fungus in humid and wet conditions. The blooms are pollinator-friendly and are great as cut flowers. Aralia cordata ‘Sun King’ voted 2020 Perennial Plant of the Year The Perennial Plant Association has announced the 2020 Perennial Plant of the Year. Aralia cordata ‘Sun King’ is a fabulous high-impact perennial that brings a bold pop of glowing color and texture to the shade or part shade garden.

“Aralia ‘Sun King’ had been nominated by PPA members again and again over the years. It finally came out on top this year,” says Martha Smith, horticulture educator with University of Illinois Extension. “Persistence pays off!” Aralia ‘Sun King’ also won the International Hardy Plant Union Outstanding Plant Award in 2012.

Native to shady forested areas in Japan, ‘Sun King’ was “discovered” by plantsman Barry Yinger in a Japanese garden center atop a department store. This perennial has become a beloved shade garden staple across the country.

Bright yellow shoots emerge in spring, then grow to 4 to 6 feet tall and nearly as wide. Small, cream-colored umbels of flowers appear in late July and last through September, attracting bees and eventually developing into tiny, dark, inedible berries. Despite Sun King’s stature, it’s very well behaved, with little to no reseeding or suckering.

Hardy to USDA zones 3 to 9 (Northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico), it’s hard not to find a place in the garden for this gold-leaf beauty. To retain its color, place in part shade. If in heavy shade, Smith says the color will become more lime green. ’Sun King’ will tolerate more sun as long as ample moisture is provided. This low-maintenance perennial benefits from a pinching or slight cutback in May to encourage branching.

During long periods of drought, ‘Sun King’ will suffer if not kept watered. Being herbaceous, it will die back in the fall and re-emerge in the spring. It is best grown in well-drained soils and benefits from compost being incorporated. No serious insect or disease problems affect it, and deer don’t bother it.

Also called Udo, Japanese asparagus, Mountain asparagus, or Japanese spikenard, young shoots of this plant are considered a culinary delicacy in Japan where they are cultivated in underground tunnels.

The flavor is reported to taste “asparagus-like” or “lemony.” Young shoots are harvested and blanched or pickled. White fleshy roots are eaten as one would consume a parsnip.

The Perennial Plant of the Year® (PPOY) program began in 1990 to showcase a perennial that is a standout among its competitors. Perennials chosen are suitable for a wide range of growing climates, require low maintenance, have multiple-season interest, and are relatively pest/ disease-free.

For many local families the Oregon Park District Breakfast with Santa is an annual family tradition and it was a full house at both seatings this year.

“Families gathered at Cork & Tap for a delicious breakfast catered by Ralphie and LuLu’s. The Cork & Tap venue is beautiful and spacious, giving participants room to move around, mingle and enjoy the morning activities. The Oregon McDonalds and Merlin’s also supported and contributed to the event,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation.

“In addition to the yummy breakfast, the children enjoyed talking with Santa and getting their annual photo with him, making a special ornament for their tree and some enjoyed the photo booth with the silly holiday props,” Ketter said. “If you missed it this year, don’t worry.

We will have another Santa event next year for families to enjoy.”

Oregon first at Polo tournament with 52-40 win Lambrigtsen, Bothe prove to be too much for Lady Marcos

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Two weeks ago when Polo lost to Oregon in basketball, it was a heavy dose of Olivia Lambrigtsen and Jenae Bothe that gave the Marcos fits.

The finals of the Polo Girls Basketball Christmas Classic proved to the same story on Dec. 19, with the pair combining for 39 points in Oregon’s 52-40 win.

“Like I said last time, it’s pick your poison,” Polo coach Jeff Grobe said. “Bothe is so strong in the middle and Olivia got hot on us, even when we had a hand in her face.”

Lambrigtsen was on fire in the first half, scoring 20 points on a variety of shots from all over the court.

Throw in numerous steals, assists and rebounds, and there was little Polo could do about her.

“We knew it start to start with defense tonight and we’re solid because we share the ball,” Lambrigtsen said.

A prime example of this was Lambrigtsen breaking the press, finding Bre DeHaan in the middle of the court and DeHaan passing to Bothe under the basket for a wide-open score to make it 42-24, shortly after Polo went on a 7-point run when Lambrigtsen was taking a breather.

Though she didn’t score in the second half, Lambrigsten did all she could to find open teammates. Typically, she would make a steal, drive the length of the court and fed Bothe.

The Marcos had no answer for Bothe in the second half. She had 10 of the 14 second-half points for Oregon, and also helping her team to a 40-30 rebounding advantage.

“With both Olivia and I scoring, we put more pressure on the other team’s defense,” Bothe said. “We’ve become more balanced, not just with the two of us, but the whole team.”

Coach Wendy Lambrigtsen agreed with that assessment.

“It was a fantastic team effort,” she said. “We also won the physical battle and really controlled the boards.”

Whenever Mallory Patterson, who made six treys in Tuesday’s win over West Carroll, had the ball, the Hawks relentlessly hounded her.

“We definitely wanted to take away that perimeter threat,” said Lambrigtsen, who could be heard yelling “get on No. 4”, anytime Patterson touched the ball.

Patterson, who led Polo with 11 points, hit a 3 to start the game, but did not score again until the second half. “(Oregon) watched the game and saw what Mallory did. Wendy came in with a good game plan to stop her,” Grobe said.

Freshman Lindee Poper scored four points to keep the Marcos within 16-11 early in the second quarter, but Oregon pulled away after that.

Lauren Montavon got into the act with an offensive rebound and putback and DeHaan nailed a 3 for a 26-11 Hawk lead.

Boys bowling Oregon 3,317, Hall 2,689: The Hawks won all three games by nearly 200 pins in a victory in Spring Valley.

Jacob Smith’s match-high 682 series included a second game of 259 and a third game of 255 to lead Oregon. Eddie Buttens closed out his 568 series with a 231 game, while Charlie Bachman added a 552 series. Isaac Kaltenbrun (517), Kyle Strite (502) and Brandon Rowe (496) also competed for the Hawks.

Girls bowling Oregon 3,100, Hall 2,298: The Hawks were 250 pins better in the second and third games in a win at Spring Valley.

Sammantha Meyers’ 588 series and 221 game were tops for Oregon, while Ava Wight rolled a 546 series and Rebbeca Meyers added a 531 series. Alysa Conley (505), Elizabeth Villarreal (490) and Hannah Kaltenbrun (440) also bowled for the Hawks.

Wrestling Morrison sweeps home triangular: The Mustangs defeated Polo 44-19 and Three Rivers rival Newman 36-25 in a pair of duals.

Morrison’s double-winners were Colton Linke (126/132 pounds) and Aaron Wolf (220). Other Mustang winners against the Polo were Logan Baker (132), Ryan Kennedy (138), Kayden White (145), Kyle Roberts (152), Jevin Smith (170), Brenden Stearns (182) and Jason Lopez (285).

Kyle Tunink (152/160) was the onlyNewman wrestler to win two contested matches. Mason Glaudel (132), Will Rude (138) and Riley Wescott (220) added wins against Polo, while Cameron Dugger (160), Brady Stevens (182) and Jaxon Schabacker (285) won bouts against Morrison.

Cole Faivre (195 pounds) was the lone double-winner for the Marcos, with a decision and a major decision.

Alex Davies (152) and Joel Ludwig (285) added wins against Newman, while McKeon Crase (113) and Marcus McKenna (160) picked up wins against Morrison.

Dakota earns tourney title with one-point wins

When was the last time that happened? It’s been awhile, that’s for sure.

Oregon played its most complete game of the year in dominating Polo, performing at a much higher level than they did in beating the Marcos a couple weeks previous.

Olivia Lambrigtsen set the tone early for Oregon. If I had to pick out a fault about her game it’s that she doesn’t shoot enough.

I know she prefers to find the opener shooter, but the Hawks need her to put the ball up more.

In the first half, she wasn’t afraid to do that and she can knock them down from all over the court.

What was evident in watching Oregon play was how well everyone cooperates for the greater good. It’s old hat to say, but it truly is a team effort for the Hawks.

For years, the Forreston tourney has gotten high marks for its hospitality room food. I also need to put a plug in for Betty Miller at Polo.

She puts a very nice spread, besides serving as scorekeeper.

The basketball post-season assignments were recently announced by the IHSA. What stood out

most was Eastland and Amboy in the same girls sectional.

Last year, Amboy was sent south to an entirely different super-sectional than the rest of the NUIC teams. Unfortunately, that is where they ran into a Danville Schlarman juggernaut, the same team that also hammered Eastland in the 1A state championship game.

Schlarman was bumped up to 2A, but that is a year late for Amboy.

Both Amboy and Eastland are ranked near the top of the 1A poll and have a date with each other Jan. 7 at Amboy. That game will have a state-title atmosphere to it and will be a preview, should the team face off in a sectional finals a few weeks later.

The sub-sectional opposite Amboy and Eastland has plenty of talent too, with 9-1 Durand, 10-1 Aquin and 11-2 Dakota.

For the boys, the number of former 3A teams moving down to 2A is quite substantial. The super-sectional complex that Oregon, ‘Bago and Byron are a part of now has former 3A teams such as Marengo, Genoa-Kingston, Johnsburg, Montini, Woodstock Marian, Westchester St. Joe’s, Stillman Valley, Lutheran and Rock Falls.

The reason for this is that the IHSA changed enrollment classifications for various sports.

That may be the reason why the Amboy girls are in a different sectional. For the 2A boys, the competition got extremely more difficult.

My far-fletched concept of the Oregon boys advancing out of a super-sectional is nothing more than a pipe dream at this point.

ith No. 8 seed Dakota claiming the title at the 60th Annual Forreston Basketball, it was an anything goes affair. The Indians earned their stripes, knocking off the two top teams, Winnebago and Newman, by a point.

As Newman coach Ray Sharp said, Dakota wanted it more than his Comets in the championship game.

Dakota’s season ended last year on Forreston’s court in the 4-overtime thriller. It’s a neat story to see them come in and be champs of this prestigious event.

The Big Northern conference had one its worst outings ever, with nobody in the top four. That conference is going to be way down this year.

Dixon hasn’t won a game, North Boone and Mendota are 1-8 and most everyone else is around .500.

The best team looks to be Lutheran (4-4). Their record is deceiving, as they’ve played some 3A and 4A teams.

After a 7-0 start, Oregon has cooled off to 9-5, including three losses at Forreston as the No. 2 seed. I had planned to cover the Hawks against Newman in the semis, but an upset loss in OT to Lena-Winslow threw those plans out the window.

The positive was that it freed me up to head back to the Polo girls tourney for the Polo-Oregon finale.

Like the Dakota boys, Polo pulled off some close wins to make the championship game, this with a 1-7 record coming in. Though the Marcos lost to Oregon, there was a buzz in Polo over a 3-game winning streak.

Rough going for Hawks on the wrestling mats

BY RANDY HOLLAND The Hawk wrestlers traveled to Rochelle for dual meets against the Hubs and the Plano Reapers on Dec. 17.

After Rochelle dispatched Plano 66-12 in the opener, the Hawks got their third team win for the season against the Reapers 48-36.

Oregon did not have enough horsepower against the hosts, honorable mention in the 2A rankings, in the nightcap, a 58-21 loss.

On Dec. 19, Oregon went north to face sixth ranked Dakota and managed just one win in a 66-4 drubbing.

Injury and illness have been a big problem for the Hawks this season and it culminated with Oregon not having enough wrestlers to compete in the annual Stillman Valley Holiday Tournament on Dec. 21.

Five wrestlers competed in the junior varsity tournament. Grant Stender and Ethan George both pinned their way to championships.

Eliza Easly took second and Elizabeth Ruter and Josh Batt were fifth.

Wrestling against Plano began at 170 with Brandon Hyde-Jones going over in a half nelson at 1:42 and Oregon had to forfeit 182.

At 195, Jonathon Alaniz went out front with a half nelson for a fall at 2:31.

Up at 220, Adam Glendenning fought a headlock almost the whole first period but was finally pinned at 1:51.

At heavyweight, Miguel Vasquez had a nice reversal before he was rolled and pinned at 3:18. The Hawks needed wins. Stender took a forfeit at 106 and Lane Halvorson caught a double chicken wing at 1:14.

At 120, Sam Flores-Minnis got a rolling takedown in a half nelson in 36 seconds. That tied the team score, but Oregon fell behind again when Emmett Peterson got thrown in a reverse half nelson in 35 seconds.

The Hawks strung together four straight pins to pull ahead.

At 132, Seth Stevens had two sets of backpoints before he stacked for the fall at 4:53.

Andrew Herbst had seven takedowns, the last into a cradle at 1:31.

At 1:45, George had two takedowns before he pinned with a stack at 2:24.

Gabe Eckerd finished the run, pinning with a second half nelson in 51 seconds. The Hawks had to forfeit 160 to end the meet.

Wrestling started with a Hawk forfeit against Rochelle. On the mat at 195, Alaniz met fourth ranked Ben Harvey, and went over the front in a half nelson at 3:16.

Anseth at 220, Glendenning was taken down with a hip toss and pinned in a headlock at 5:11. Oregon forfeited 285 and trailed 24-0.

The Hawks got on the board with a pin by Halvorson at 106, a double chicken wing again at 1:39. Edwin Estrada escaped and hit a double leg takedown with five seconds left to secure a 10-5 decision.

Flores-Minnis won by forfeit at 120. Stevens drew honorable mention Caleb Nadig at 126.

He fought a tough match but gave up a takedown to his back and was pinned at 3:48. 132 was a forfeit.

At 138, Braydon Altherr hit a drive to the back in a half nelson at 3:44.

George was on his back in a reverse half nelson in the first and missed on a shot in the second and was taken down to his back in a half nelson at 2:20.

Eckerd lost two sets of backpoints in a 14-2 major decision loss. 160 was another forfeit and at 170, HydeJones was pinned in a half nelson at 1:21 after a spinning takedown to end the meet.

On the JV mat, three wrestlers got two matches each. Isaac Brooks pinned with a half nelson at 3:02 and with a butcher at 1:05.

Easly was pinned on a reverse to the back at 2:36 and pinned with a cradle at 1:37.

Batt was reversed to his back and pinned in one match and taken down to his back and pinned in a second.

Against the Indians, the meet started with four junior varsity matches.

Easly was pinned in a cradle at 1:18.

Ruter fought a half nelson for a minute before she was pinned at 1:32.

Brooks hit a toss to the back at 1:13. Batt was put in a half nelson at 1:02.

On the varsity mat, it would be eleven matches before Stevens would get the lone Hawk win. Â Starting at 145, Eckerd scored his first points with a duck under takedown in the third as he went down to a 14-5 major decision loss.

George got turned twice before he

At 106, Halvorson rode tough through the second in a hard fought 4-0 loss.

Second ranked Maddux Blakely pinned Flores-Minnis with a near side cradle at 4:24.

In his winning effort, Stevens came alive in the third with an escape, a takedown, a tilt for two points and a stalling point to take a 9-0 major decision.

Herbst was countered for a takedown at the start of the 132 pound match and was injured on the move and was unable to continue, losing by injury default.

The meet ended with Altherr facing honorable mention Lucas Sutherland and he went over twice in the second, the last a cradle for two points to finish a 16-0 technical fall loss at 3:25.

Men’s Warehouse also shared with the FBLA members how to prepare for an interview, and encouraged them to arrive at least 15 minutes early for any interview.

They also stressed the importance of first impressions on an interview, and shared their personal stories about candidates that they have interviewed for jobs at their store. After the interview has been completed, the applicants were told to always follow up the interview with either a thank you letter or an email. “This was great timing,� Adviser Cathie Murphy said. “Next month we head into Regional competition and our members need to be professional dress to compete. Now they are armed with knowledge about professional dress and have the ability to make better dress choices.�

Representatives from Men’s Warehouse in Rockford came to Stillman Valley High School on Dec. 12 to present “Professional Dress� to the Future Business Leaders of America.

Using a PowerPoint presentation, members learned about proper professional dress for job interviews as well as what to wear on a follow-up job interview.

Men’s Warehouse presenters were Melissa Gocha, Jason Alberts, and Chris Pomatto. Members were able to take a first-hand look at the proper types of suit coats, color of suits, ties, shirts, belts, pants/ skirts, socks and shoes that are appropriate for a first and follow up interview. “It was a very useful presentation that anyone could have used,�

Stillman Bank holds Christmas coloring contest Stillman Bank recently held its annual Christmas Coloring Contest for kids up to 10 years old.

This year’s picture was of a wreath with ornaments on it. The winners received their very own gingerbread house kit.

For ages 5 and under, the winners were: Lainey Gardner of Byron; Mason Palmer of Oregon; Harper Dalen of Rochelle; Sophie Bounds of Rockford; Emmaline Thompson of Roscoe; and Adrienne Farris of Stillman Valley For ages 6 through 10, the winners were: Kinsley Hobbie of Byron; Taylor Lovblad of Oregon; Ava Wooten of Rochelle; Lilly Hamm of Rockford; Adelaide Thompson of Roscoe; and Stella Christiansen of Stillman Valley Organizers of the contest thanked everyone who stopped by Stillman Bank to enter the coloring contest.

More than 100 entries were received and each child received a small prize for their participation.

Help is available to recycle your Christmas tree The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will once again partner with units of local government and certain high school Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters to conduct the annual Christmas tree collection and recycling program.

Since the program began in 1999, there have been over 15,000 trees collected, with trees averaging around 50 pounds each, that equates to approximately 375 tons of trees which were all turned into usable mulch.

“Remove all decorations, lights, plastic bags, and place your tree at your curb by 8 a.m.,” said Paul Cooney, Ogle County Solid Waste Management Specialist. “This pickup service will be offered in Byron, Forreston, Leaf River, Mt. Morris, Oregon, and Polo.”

For Rochelle residents, the Rochelle Street Department will mulch trees at the curb during the first two weeks of January, weather

permitting.

“All trees should be free of light strands, garland, and other decorations, no wreaths or other designs with wire backings, no artificial trees,” Cooney said.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following police activity.

Dec. 13 Ian B. Stark, 23, of Saint Charles, was arrested at 9:30 p.m. for aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies, along with the Rochelle Fire Department and Rochelle EMS were dispatched to a single vehicle accident at the intersection of East Illi-

nois 38 and South Mulford Road.

After an investigation it was learned that Stark lost control of his vehicle and entered the south side ditch, just west of the intersection.

IDOT provides updated road conditions on website

Road conditions are recorded by plow drivers out in the field and relayed to the website through

a cloud-based system to provide a general overview on IDOT-maintained highways.

The road conditions map averages more than two million visitors during snow-and-ice season, featuring a color scheme of pinks and blues to differentiate from the red, yellow and green of traffic congestion reporting as well as to increase accessibility for those who have difficulty distinguishing colors.

“The safest thing is to not be driving during winter weather, but if travel is a must, go to gettingaroundillinois.com before you go,” Osman said. “Planning ahead and using safe winter driving habits can help you get it together during winter weather.”

Carefree 4-H Club News

Carefree 4-H Reporter The Carefree 4-H club met on Nov. 12. We discussed the 4-H holiday tree contest putting our tree in Hoppers Poppers. Hailee Taylor decorated our tree.

At this meeting we also discussed what we are doing for our community service project.

Gracie Prose led us in our activities. We are making tie blankets and donating then to the Ronald McDonald House.

Our club is adopting a family for the holiday season. We will wrap all of our gifts in our next meeting for the family.

Our next meeting was Dec. 11, at the farm bureau building, with a holiday potluck and the meeting afterwards.

An eye exam is a good idea, especially if things are starting to look a little fuzzy around the edges.
