The business of cannabis is meeting topic Residents speak out in favor of allowing businesses in town

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Close to 25 people told the Mt. Morris Village Board on Dec. 11 how they felt about allowing cannabis businesses within the village limits.

As the state legalizes recreational cannabis on Jan. 1, towns in the area have been making ordinance changes locally to prepare. Village board members organized last night’s meeting to gather public input.

“I think there’s a lot of things we need to consider on both sides of this matter,” Village Trustee Philip Labash said. “I think we’ve had time to actually consider this and have discussion as a board.

We’ve done more fact finding now and open debate.”

One couple was in attendance with the interest of starting a craft grow business in Mt. Morris. Ed and Justine Messenger live in unincorporated Ogle County, but they’re looking at a building for the potential business within the village.

The longtime residents of the area live about five minutes from Mt. Morris.

“We can put a product out there that people can be proud to consume,” Justine Messenger said. “They’re going to know what’s in that product. Let’s do this the right way. Let’s put something in place and try to eliminate the black market. That’s the only way it’s going to get done. We want to do this right.”

The Messengers enlisted the services of Josh Alper, a cannabis consultant for Harvest 360, who they brought to the meeting. Alper spoke multiple times in favor of why the village should consider allowing not just a craft grow or dispensary business, but all five types of cannabis licenses.

On multiple occasions, Alper took time to explain the new laws and regulations of Illinois to those at the meeting, as well as other details about cannabis and products like it. A craft grow is a business that is licensed by the Department of Agriculture to cultivate, dry, cure, and package cannabis and perform other necessary activities to make cannabis available for sale at a dispensing organization or use at a processing organization.

“I feel strongly that the type of business the Messengers are interested in, the craft grow, is most likely to be looked upon favorably by this group,” Alper said. “They want the economic development, but they’re a little scared of the dispensaries. I think it was a pretty encouraging meeting overall.”

Applications for craft growing come out on Jan. 7 and must be returned by March 31. Forty licenses will be distributed by July 1. The couple said they’d have look elsewhere in the area if Mt. Morris decided against allowing cannabis businesses. The Messenger’s first choice is to grow at their current residence, but so far the Ogle County board hasn’t made that possible.

Other attendees at the meeting voiced opinions both for and against having a cannabis business in Mt. Morris.

“I don’t want kids to get the feeling that, ‘Well, the adults decided it’s OK, so it won’t hurt us either,’” Ed Baker said.

“I think this sends the right message to our children,” Terry Stevens said. “The kids are going to be educated, they’re not going to be fooled. When I was growing up and I heard the lies about marijuana, it made me not believe anything the adults were saying.”

Former Village Board member Mary Francis voiced concerns with the ability of the village to monitor and enforce the

cannabis ordinance that it creates.

“I’ve been concerned for some time about the lack of enforcement of ordinances in our village,” Francis said.

“And this just takes it to a whole new level.”

Labash said the village isn’t in a urgent rush to create an ordinance. As a result of the Jan. 1 law, a cannabis business will automatically become legal in Mt. Morris on Jan. 1, unless or until the village makes an ordinance against it.

Labash said an ordinance could likely be voted on in January or February.

Other Towns Oregon approved a zoning ordinance last month by a vote of 3-2 to allow cannabis businesses in town.

The Polo City Council voted unanimously on Monday, Dec. 2 to prohibit cannabis businesses in the city.

The Forreston Village Board passed an ordinance on Oct. 21 that prohibits cannabis businesses in the village once they become legal in the state.

Ogle County Board Chairman John Finfrock, Mt. Morris, summed up the decision by saying that the board isn’t ready because of uncertainty and how the recent trailer bill rewrote the upcoming law.

The Ogle County Board approved an ordinance 18-2 Tuesday that prohibits all types of cannabis businesses in unincorporated areas of the county.

“The county has determined that the operation of cannabis business establishments would present adverse impacts upon the health, safety and welfare of the residents,” the ordinance said. “And additional costs, burdens and impacts upon law enforcement and regulatory operations of the county.”

The ordinance comes at a time when many area towns and villages are voting on similar ordinances as recreational cannabis becomes legal in the state on Jan. 1. So far, Oregon has allowed cannabis businesses while Forreston and Polo have prohibited them. Mt. Morris has held a town meeting, but has not yet voted on an ordinance.

County Board members Lloyd Droege (Rochelle) and Dean Fox (German Valley) voted against prohibiting cannabis businesses.

Droege, a farmer, thinks farmers should have the opportunity at new crops like some in the area tried with hemp in recent years.

“I think farmers need to be able to have another crop,” Droege said.

“And I think there should be more research done on cannabis to see where it can help out in the medical field. There’s too many commercials on TV where they show pharmaceutical drugs and all the side effects.

It’s crazy.”

Board members Jamey Sulser, Rochelle, and John Kenney, Rochelle, voiced support for the prohibition of cannabis businesses just before the ordinance was voted on.

“To allow any cannabis sales or manufacturing in this county would be really detrimental, not only to the youth that would still in some way have access to it, but also to the law enforcement that would have to enforce it,” Sulser said.

“I don’t care what they’re doing in Springfield,” Kenney said. “I don’t care what they’re doing in California. Right now, it’s my understanding that regardless of what the states decide to do on their own, it’s still illegal at the federal level. I would

recommend that everyone remembers that when they vote on the outcome.”

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Rick Ryland, a member of the Oregon Plan Commission spoke in opposition of allowing cannabis businesses. Ryland listed off larger cities such as Naperville that have prohibited cannabis businesses and cited DuPage County banning them as an example of a county.

“According to the U.S. Surgeon General Advisory,” Ryland said.

“Marijuana use will affect a developing brain up to 25 years.”

Police are prepping for change in cannabis law Two agencies busy prepping officers

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The legalization of recreational cannabis use in the new year is prompting local law enforcement agencies to plan a new approach for the public as well as officers.

Educating patrol officers as well as the public has been a priority for those in charge like Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle and Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan.

“There’s a number of things that people need to be aware of when they start to consume cannabis after the first of the year,” VanVickle said.

“Because it could lead to encounters with law enforcement.”

Under the new law, Illinois residents over the age of 21 can legally possess maximums of 30 grams of cannabis flower, five grams of cannabis concentrate (oil) and 500 milligrams of THC in cannabis-infused products (edibles).

The board voted 17-5 on Sept. 17 to impose a 3.75 percent tax on recreational cannabis sold in unincorporated areas of the county and a three percent tax on sales made in municipalities. Approval of the measure makes it possible for the county to collect taxes from the businesses in the municipalities that do allow them.

Solar Moratorium The board voted 11-9 to extend the moratorium on solar farm approvals for a third time since it was originally approved on Aug. 21, 2018. Special use permits for solar farms will still not be allowed in Ogle County.

The moratorium will terminate on March 31, 2020 unless terminated earlier, modified or further extended by a subsequent action of the Ogle County Board.

“If people follow the law directly, it’s in Sheriff Brian a sealed containVanVickle er, it’s transported and used privately, we’re probably not going to get involved with that,” DeHaan said. “For me, we’ll be injected into situations that are questionable and we’ll have to do our jobs and investigate. Just to make sure the right things are done and they follow the law.”

DeHaan said that he started to get his department ready for the legalization two years ago when he saw the change starting. Medical marijuana being allowed in the state was when he first saw the change.

When the law changed to civil citations for small amounts of cannabis, that helped officers transition into what will be a new system on Jan. 1, DeHaan said.

VanVickle held off on preparing his department for legal cannabis until November, when Illinois’ can-

nabis trailer bill came down, rewriting the original law. VanVickle couldn’t think of any legislation or change in his career that compares to the Jan. 1 cannabis legalization, especially with how it was rewritten with little time left until it becomes legal.

“We’re kind of scrambling to make sure everybody is up to speed on what the laws are when it takes place in a couple of weeks,” VanVickle said. “That’s our biggest concern right now is just getting everyone up to speed on our end as well as doing some public outreach.”

Neither the Sheriff’s Office nor OPD spent extra money on training to prepare for the cannabis legalization. DeHaan has a few officers that are experienced in the subject and will be leading the way on policing cannabis. His other officers are learning as well.

Until courts rule otherwise, VanVickle’s office will continue to use drug-sniffing K-9 dogs at traffic stops that warrant it, as possessing cannabis that’s not properly stored can result in the charge of a class A misdemeanor, dogs cannot be untrained to detect cannabis. If a court ruling outlaws the use of K-9s, VanVickle thinks the job will become more difficult.

Court rulings and challenges

could come into play in many cases early on after the Jan. 1 legalization, he said.

“With a new law and as poorly written as it was, I certainly anticipate a number of court challenges,” VanVickle said.

VanVickle and DeHaan were both against an ordinance allowing zoning for cannabis businesses in Oregon last month that passed. Policing the drug for years combined with research done on other communities like Colorado that followed similar paths made for a feeling of skepticism.

“It’s really concerning that our current legislature has decided that this isn’t really a big deal anymore after it being a problem for so long,” VanVickle said. “Medical evidence and historical evidence from other states show that it really is a big deal and it is detrimental to communities.”

Both men encouraged the public to come forward with questions regarding the new laws.

“My biggest thing is making sure the public educates themselves,” DeHaan said. “We’re here to try and be a resource to make sure nobody does anything that would get them in trouble.”

After an earlier finish date of Dec. 1 came and passed, concerns were raised when local residents noticed Black Hawk still under wraps and surrounded by scaffolding. The work by contractor Quality Restorations Inc., of Wood Dale continues.

We are renewed in the gift that God has given us. Our anticipation builds, even though we know what is to come. For each of us, the gift of Jesus is brand new, over and over again.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Sharon Baker. Sheryl Hopkins shared her memories of our church as we continue our year-long celebration of our building. I had the opportunity to light the third Advent candle for love.

Chuck Kearns sang the song, “Once and For All Time” for our special music, accompanied by his wife, Bev. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe shared a picture book for the children’s message for Kaitlyn, Laura, and Harper.

members gathered at the Pinecricker Cafe to celebrate the birthday of Don Hay. Don and Vicki’s daughter, Chrstine Stephens, and her children, Sydney, Owen, and Avery, traveled from Naperville for the surprise party.

On Saturday morning, Charlotte hosted the women’s breakfast at her home. Charlotte shared a new recipe for a thin bacon bread with cranberries along with the meal.

After the morning meal, the ladies participated in a gift exchange and game.

Joining in the fun were Vicki Hay, Judy Nettz, Jean Cunningham, Martha Johannsen, Rose Avey, Sharon Baker, and Judy Riffle. Everyone enjoyed a delicious breakfast and a morning of loving fellowship.

Last weekend, James and Nancy Hopkins traveled to Decorah to see their grandson, Connor Hopkins, sing with the Luther choir in their Christmas concert. Connor’s parents, Jim and Dana Hopkins also attended the concert on Saturday night.

Victoria Kuzlik was busy on Dec. 14 sorting coats, gloves, mittens and other winter items donated to this year’s Coats for Hope drive.

“We started in October and this is the fifth year we’ve done this,” the 15-year-old Byron High School student said. “We have about 2,000 coats donated this year.

“We will get ahold of the shelters, see what they need, and deliver the items. We normally get done before my winter break.”

Along with the donated coats this year were a large collection of handmade hats and scarves donated by

Crochet My Way. “They donated hats, scarves and purses,” Victoria said.

Kuzlk and her dad, Robert, started the organization five years ago after becoming victims of domestic violence.

This is the first year that Victoria has taken the reigns of the monthslong effort.

“The contributions are a little low this,” Victoria said. “This is the first year that I’ve taken over.”

“Yes, it’s been wonderful,” said her dad as he prepared to do a TV interview.

“This year we are proud to be working with Family Peace Center in Rockford,” Victoria said. “It’s not a shelter, but more of a one-stop shop for things people may need.”

Schiller Piano Factory was the pride of Oregon Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK The following is from the story published in the June 20, 1901 issue of the Ogle County Republican.

“THE PRIDE OF OREGON” “It’s Great and Grand Industry—Only Piano Factory in United States Run by Water Power— Can Produce Ninety Pianos a Week.”

The Indicator Newsletter of Chicago, a music trades journal wrote “there is not a prettier spot in the West than the picturesque site where the town of Oregon, Illinois is located, and there is not a better arranged piano factory in the West than the Schiller, which is the industrial feature of that prosperous little town.

Recent additions to the structure make it an imposing affair, and a casual glance at the factory and its busy workmen will convince any visitor that president F. G. Jones, of the Schiller Piano Co has about all the trade that he care to attend to at this season of the year.”

The original factory was five stories high built on the Rock River Bank. The next addition built at street level was three stories so its roof matched the first five story building.

The dimensions of the factory were 60 feet by 204 feet. The capacity of the plant at that time was 90 pianos a week.

The Schiller factory is the only piano factory in the United States that is run by water power.

The dam constructed over the river opposite the factory gives a force equal to 3,000 horse power.

Fifty horse power is used to run the Schiller machinery.

The following is a note supplied to the Ogle County Republican. “The Schiller Piano Factory was opened in 1893. The company was one of the largest in Ogle County, employing more than 400 people.

The Schiller Company also owned an interest in the Oregon Electric Light and Power Company.

Jones was president of both the Power Company and the Oregon Foundry and Machine Company.

A family operation included all of the Jones’s sons and after Jones passed away in 1913 his sons continued to operate the company.

The piano factory was sold to Winter and Company of New York City in 1943. The Schiller Factory produced Victrolas, music pianos, player pianos, spinnets and baby grands.

The factory was closed in the early 70s after the company was purchased and moved to Memphis, Tenn. Dean Dye, Oregon purchased the factory in May 1977 and operated Conover Square Shopping Mall one year later Frederick was born in Coburg, Canada West in 1847, daughter of John Henry and Rachael Dean Jones.

He moved to Oregon in l865 and his folks followed in 1880. Frederick first worked on a farm and then as a clerk for Wooley. Later he worked as a silent partner with F. G. Petrie.

He owned and operated a general store on the north side of Washington between Third and

Fourth Streets. The building is still there with the name F. G. Jones on the top of the building.

Mr. Jones owned property in Oregon and the surrounding area. He owned the property where Stronghold is located. He also owned and operated a cereal mill north of the piano factory and a coal yard located behind the factory.

After returning from a 2 year stint in the army following the end of the Korean War I applied for a job in the mill work section of the factory.

I was informed they needed a piano tuner. I actually learned how to tune pianos. It’s amazing to me how people or events can determine your future.

With over forty in attendance, everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner followed by caroling from a small group of local high school students.

Joining in the fun from Pine Creek were Don and Vicki Hay and Maggie Henning.

This week was packed with several holiday activities with even more to come. I have been out shopping with friends, decorating at work, and to several parties and get-togethers.

Even through this busy time, I try to focus on the love of Christ.

As I am getting ready for my next semester, I was trying to secure the finances to continue my education.

As I received word that I was chosen to receive a grant, I thought of that saying. Even after all of these years, I still lose my faith.

I forget to trust Him. This week, I put my trust in God as my last act, when it should have been my first.

We serve and worship a faithful, loving Father. He knows what is best so we can continue to trust in Him. God listens and answers prayers no matter if we come to Him first or in a last, desperate prayer. Just know that if you ask God, prepare to be blessed beyond measure.

I hope to see you next Sunday in our church as we continue to celebrate the Advent season. Please join us on Christmas Eve for our evening service at 7:00pm with fellowship to follow. Our family welcomes your family to our little church in the country.

HCC ag shines bright at Illinois PAS Conference Highland agriculture students came away numerous awardsat the Illinois Professional Agriculture Students (PAS) Conference at Lincoln Land Community College on Nov. 22-23 in Springfield.

The 22 Highland students are part of a national studentorganization that provides opportunities for college agriculture students toexperience individual growth, leadership and career preparation throughcompetition and cooperative activities.

Over the two-day conference, students competed in individual andteam contests highlighting a variety of agriculture career opportunities.

Thestudents also networked with industry professionals and other Illinois collegestudents.

“I’m excited for all the students that participated in theconference,” said Justin Ebert, Highland Agriculture instructor. “Eachstudent’s accomplishments are a reflection of their time and commitment to achievingcareer success in the agriculture industry.”

Individual Competitions In the days leading up to the competitions, students prepared resumes, career planning projects, lesson plans, and sales presentations.

The Egg Nog Jog is a 3K runwalk through the streets of Oregon.

Fire department has investigated around two dozen sightings

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A flyover of the Rock River was conducted last week in an effort to locate the bodies of two area fishermen whose boat capsized in just below the dam in Oregon on Nov. 20.

The airplane flyover, which stretched all the way south of Grand Detour, did not yield any findings,

said Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle.

Colder conditions this week did not allow for boat searches, but Oregon Fire Department Chief Michael Knoup said crews hope to be back out with boats and sonar when the weather possibly allows on Saturday, Dec. 21.

“We’re also still investigating different sightings,” Knoup said on Dec. 16. “We had one today about something in the dam. It turned out to be a basketball.”

The department has received ‘a couple dozen’ calls with potential sightings of the bodies in the river since the search began.

A Freedom of Information Act

request submitted to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources showed the identities of the missing men to be Kent Dearborn Jr., 33, of Polo, and James Swift, 64, of Forreston.

Information from their family and friends on social media show sweatshirts and T-shirts for sale that say: “Last Cast 11-20-19” with a photo of two men fishing from a boat and the inscription “In Loving Memory Bud & Jamie” on the back.

The IDNR accident report obtained

by Sauk Valley Media showed that the men were ejected from their 14-foot Starcraft boat, registered to Swift. The vessel was found stuck in the low head dam and was difficult

to move.

Cold water immersion and environmental conditions affecting visibility (fog) were listed under what contributed to the accident.

“It appeared the vessel had gotten too close to the dam and capsized,” the report says.

Upon inspection of the vessel it was noted that there was an anchor line tied to the right rear side and was frayed with the anchor missing.

There were life jackets in the boat stowed in the front unlocked hatch.

After learning of their identities, the law enforcement officials checked the cell phone statuses of the men and discovered both phones turned off at 9:57 a.m. on Nov. 20.

Mother-Daughter Holiday Tea was another success

Dog Training Classes The Oregon Park District is quickly becoming a popular and affordable choice for dog training in the surrounding Oregon area.

The Park District is now offering a full series of indoor training sessions January through April.

“There are a variety of class offerings to fit your dog’s needs,” said Ketter. “This January-February we will have a trick training and a beginner’s obedience class offered.

Both classes are just $50 for residents and $60 for non-residents.”

The deadline to register for both classes is Jan. 2.

Trick Training Tuesdays will be held Jan. 7-Feb. 11 from 6-7 p.m.

Beginner’s Obedience Wednesdays will be held Jan. 8-Feb. 12 from 6-7 p.m.

Exercise your dog inside the warm gym at Nash Recreation on Friday nights in January from 6:30-7:30 pm.

“Walk the perimeter of the room and-or practice your training in the middle of the gym,” Ketter said.

“Oregon Park District trainer, Bree Pazera, will be available on site as needed. All dogs enrolled must have taken a least one other park district dog training class. Dog must be 8 months old to attend.”

The 4-week session is $25 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $30 for non-residents.

The deadline to register is Jan. 3.

The Oregon Park District’s Mother-Daughter Holiday Tea marked another year of success.

Last weekend, the holiday tea was held at Lincoln Way Inn Bed and Breakfast in Franklin Grove.

“Many of the same families have been enjoying these teas which have been held at various venues since we began offering them in 2011,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation. “Special thanks to Lisa Marie Ayres and her staff for hosting the tea at the beautiful Inn. The decor was lovely, the Inn was cozy, the tea, treats, and sandwiches were delicious, and everyone had a great time!”

Each of the adult guests also received a gift of honey which Lisa and her husband John harvest from their hives at their farm in Franklin Grove.

“The young ladies also received tea goodie bags with items to enjoy at home,” Ketter said. “The Park District staff enjoys planning fun family time and opportunities to make memories. Tea BINGO is always a big hit as well as the family photos each year. We thank all who attended and filled the Inn with holiday cheer!”

Road trips prove tough for the Hawk wrestlers

BY RANDY HOLLAND The Hawk wrestlers and fans pounded down Interstate 88 twice last week and it was two rough trips.

On Dec. 10, Oregon traveled 60 miles to Erie to take on top ranked Lena-Winslow-Stockton and the honorable mention Erie-Prophetstown Panthers.

Lena was stacked and the Hawks had just three wins, but three good ones, in a 62-12 loss.

Oregon won six, three by forfeit against Erie, but still went down 54-33. The Pantherhawks defeated the Panthers 63-4 in the opener.

On Dec. 12, it was 50 miles past Erie to Rockridge High School to meet the Rockets and West Carroll, and it was two more losses.

Rockridge is not ranked as a team, but they were strong and rolled over the Hawks 54-18.

The honorable mention Thunder pinned seven times and added three forfeits to down the Hawks 60-24.

Against Lena, the Hawks forfeited 126. At 132, Andrew Herbst lost the first takedown, but came back to take an 8-2 win.

Le-Win won the next three. Jared Glendenning was pinned in a chicken wing at 1:24 by sixth ranked Marey Robey.

At 145, Gabe Eckerd had a couple of chances but lost by a 22-6 technical fall at 5:55. Ethan George was thrown to his back and pinned in 45 seconds.

In the marquee match of the night, Jokiah Sewell met fourth ranked Jason Hermann, fourth in state last year.

Sewell was down 4-1 in the first but fought back and tied it with an escape in the third. In overtime, Sewell scored a takedown to the back for five points and a crowd pleasing 12-7 win.

The Hawks had to forfeit 170.

Against sixth ranked Case Harmston, Wayde Reimer got rolled and pinned at 2:20. At 195, Adam Glendenning had the first takedown and three backpoints but ended up getting rolled into a headlock and pinned at 4:32.

The Hawks got their third win when Jonathon Alaniz pulled a wing back at 2:15. Oregon forfeited 285 and the Pantherhawks would win out.

Against tenth ranked Garrett Luke, Grant Stender took a 7-1 loss at 106. Edwin Estrada was switched into a half nelson and pinned at 2:15.

In the final match of the meet, Zac Cox met tenth ranked Zach White and was reversed with a granby and pinned at 2:29.

In the night cap against the host Panthers, the Hawks started on top with forfeits to Seth Stevens and Jared Glendenning, and Stender got a forfeit later in the contest.

On the mat, Eckerd was turned with a chicken wing at 1:50. Oregon forfeited the next three matches and Erie went ahead 30-12 when Reimer was tilted into a half nelson in 42 seconds.

Adam Glendenning trailed by one in the third when he was reversed to his back and pinned at 4:14.

Alaniz got his second pin of the night when he scored a standing cradle at 3:14.

In the heavyweight match, Evan Flaharty went down in a hip toss in thirty one seconds. Estrada broke a scoreless tie when he reversed into a headlock for a five point move and held on for the 5-0 win.

Cox was taken down to his back and pinned 19 seconds into the second period. The Hawks forfeited 126 to end the meet.

On the J-V mat, Lane Halvorson

pinned with a cradle and Elizza Easly pinned with a half nelson at 1:41.

Stevens took an 8-3 win. Ethan George hit a double to the back at 1:28 and was pinned at 2:41 in a second match.

Isaac Brooks was pinned twice in half nelsons at 3:14 and 5:13. Josh Batt was also the victim of two half nelsons, 1:45 and 21 seconds. Miguel Vasquez went over in a chicken wing in one minute flat.

Further down the road, Oregon forfeited the first two matches against Rockridge and went behind 18-0 when Reimer was driven to his back and pinned at 3:41 in the 182 pound match.

Adam Glendenning scored two backpoints before he pinned with a half nelson at 1:53. At 220, Miguel Vasquez was turned with a half nelson 17 seconds into the second period.

Flaharty came through with an exciting win at 285, tying the score with a penalty point with 12 seconds left and getting an escape with six seconds left to take a 3-2 decision.

Stender took a forfeit at 106. At 113 Estrada was pinned with a half nel-

son at 1:56. Cox went over in a half nelson at 1:33.

Emmett Peterson had a nice double leg takedown in the second but took a 5-3 loss. Stevens got a win at 132, two stalling points, a reverse, and an outside single netting him a 6-0 decision.

Herbst got the first point in a battle with third ranked Dallas Krueger, a three time state place winner, but came up short in his first loss of the season, losing a late takedown to go down 6-2.

At 145, George got ripped by top ranked Nolan Throne, second in state last season. He trailed 17-4 when he was thrown and pinned at 2:20.

Isaac Brooks also got roughed up.

Trailing 14-3 after the first, he was turned with a turk at 3:01 to end the meet.

The West Carroll meet moved quickly, first six matches decided by forfeit or in the first period.

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In Oregon’s 40-36 win over Forreston at the Polo Girls Basketball Christmas Classic on Tuesday, both coaches had distinct thoughts on what was the difference in a close game that was never separated by more than five points.

“The difference was that they got to have their best players on the floor and we didn’t,” Forreston coach Brian Rahn said. “I felt like we played hampered with our foul trouble. And one of starters, Brycelynn Smith, was hurt and played sparingly off the bench.”

For winning coach Wendy Lambrigtsen, it was a matter of stepping up level of play.

“We had to match their energy in the second half,” Lambrigtsen said.

“We were able to weather the storm.

That’s what won it for us.”

After Janae Bothe scored on a putback, set up by an Olivia Lambrigtsen steal, the Hawks led 31-26 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter.

Then with 5:50 left in the game,

Forreston’s top player, Alexus Houston, picked up her fourth foul. Just when it looked the most desperate for the Cardinals, Kylee Curry and Paitlyn Broshous came up with scores.

With Broushous hitting her second 3-pointer within a 1-minute span, suddenly it was a 35-33 Forreston lead.

“With Taylor (Greenfield) and Alexus having four fouls, we had others step up and hit key shots,” said Rahn, who only has a roster of seven players. “That gave us a huge boost.”

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, they would only manage one point the final 4:23. It was one-and-done on the offensive side, as Oregon took a 15-7 rebounding advantage in the fourth quarter.

“We modified out press break to get the ball down quicker so our post could flair out with guard attacks,” Lambrigtsen said. “That left two options.”

Up until then, Forreston controlled the boards 26-20, with Megan Hagemann controlling the middle for the Cardinals. She also led a bal-

anced scoring attack with 10 points, followed by eight each from Houston and Broushous and seven from Kaylee Kloster.

Houston scored the first six points for the Cardinals, but couldn’t get untracked after that.

Oregon countered with Lambrigtsen (15 points) running the floor and Bothe (13) doing inside damage.

With the score tied 14-14 in the second quarter, Lambrigtsen nailed a pair of treys to give the Hawks in 20-18 halftime lead.

The senior guard kept the up the strong play in the third quarter with a steal and a head fake move to the basket for a score. Later in the quarter, she scored off another turnover.

Meanwhile, Bothe was the recipient of assist by Lambrigtsen and Megan Buttens for back-to-back scores under the basket, as Oregon took a 29-26 lead into the final period.

For Forreston, it was Hagemann setting the tone in the third quarter with six points, her best basket being off a rebound and assist by Houston.

Oregon tried to give the game away by missing five of its last six free throws, but were salvaged by Lambrigtsen making a timely bucket.

The key score of the whole game came moments earlier when Bothe scored off an offensive rebound, was fouled and made the free throw to give the lead back to her team, 36-35.

“Our free-throw percentage could have been better,” Lambrigtsen said. “At the end, Janae and Olivia came through for us.”

Oregon finished 3-0 in pool play and moves on to meet Polo for the championship on Thursday. The Hawks (7-6) defeated Polo (4-7) two weeks ago, but the Marcos were without Alex Dusing.

Polo had lost seven in a row before putting together a 3-game winning streak at the tourney. Additionally, they were 9-for-10 in 3-point shooting in Monday’s 67-60 win over West Carroll.

“It’s going to be tough with Dusing back,” Lambrigsten said. “With the way they shot, we may go to man-to-man instead of zone.”

Boys basketball Forreston Tournament - Dec. 17 Lena-Winslow 54, Oregon 48, OT: The Hawks pushed the Panthers to overtime before falling in a Forreston quarterfinal.

The teams were tied 44-44 after 32 minutes, but Le-Win outscored Oregon 10-4 in the extra session.

Lena-Winslow led 14-10 after one quarter and 21-15 after a half before the Hawks outscored them 15-9 in the third.

Trey Woolsey scored 21 points to lead Oregon. Isaiah Bruce had 21 points for Lena-Winslow.

Boys Bowling - Dec. 14 Hawks second at L-P: Eddie Buttens placed third overall to lead Oregon to second place at the 12-team LaSalle-Peru Invitational. The Hawks had a 5,736 team total, behind only Rockford East, which had 5,901.

Buttens had a 1,282 six-game score, a total surpassed only by two Rockford East bowlers, Sam Gonzales (1,325) and Joe Sisson (1,297).

Oregon’s Jacob Smith (1,230) and Isaac Kaltenbrun (1,214) were fifth and seventh overall, respectively.

Dixon placed sixth as a team with a 5,242 score. Trevor White led the Dukes with a 1,139 total, while Brennan Erb rolled a 1,115.

Girls Basketball Genoa-Kingston 34, Oregon 31: The Hawks

were outscored 15-11 in the fourth quarter in a nip-and-tuck Big Northern loss in Genoa.

Jenae Bothe scored a game-high 19 for Oregon, which led 11-9 at halftime and 20-19 heading into the fourth quarter.

Boys Bowling Oregon 3,602, Sterling 3,428: The Golden Warriors lost a tight battle to the Hawks at Town & Country Lanes in Mount Morris.

Kyle Strite rolled a 674 series that included a 243 first game and a 247 final game to lead Oregon. Eddie Buttens’ 663 series consisted of games of 213, 224 and 226, and Isaac Kaltenbrun added games of 208, 217 and 214 for a 639 series. Jacob Smith finished off his 592 series with a 236 third game, and Charlie Bachman added a 536 series.

Girls Bowling Oregon 3,212, Sterling 2,527: The Hawks won all three games in a dual victory over the Golden Warriors at Town & Country Lanes in Mount Morris.

Rebbeca Meyers’ 647 series included games of 220 and 232 to start, and Ava Wight added a 610 series that included 214 and 210 games to close out for Oregon. Hannah Kaltenbrun rolled a 548 series, Sammantha Meyers bowled a 546 series, and Elizabeth Villarreal (431) and MacKenzie Brown (430) also competed for the Hawks.

No brainer to start baseball, softball a week later

T

his is one of the weeks when I am totally out of the loop of local athletics, as travel takes me to Utah for an early family Christmas.

One of the best ideas this country has ever come up with is the Interstate Highway, as I-80 has become a very good friend in recent years.

I noticed on the IHSA website that several proposals were being voted on by the member schools. The three that stand out most are: cutting summer contact days (with coaches) from 25 to 20, moving the start date of baseball and softball a week later and eliminating the football district concept.

Voting ended on Monday the 16th, with the results announced on Dec. 17. A simple majority will decide each of the 11 different proposals, with schools voting either yes or no.

Since, I am writing this in advance of those dates, I can only offer guesses on the final outcome.

The no-brainers are cutting contact days and starting baseball/softball a week later.

Even at 20 days, summer contact with coaches is 20 days to many. Sports used to function just fine with kids having the summer away from sports and reporting for practice once the fall sport season started.

But, this is a different era with an intense focus on turning young aspiring athletes into elite competitors. I prefer the old-fashioned way of prepping a kid for sports by hay-baling, yard work or playing amongst themselves without

adult supervision.

Spring sports have been plagued by terrible weather for years. Starting one week later can only help, but let’s face it - summer is when these sports should be played.

Back in the 1970s, high-school baseball used to be in the summer. The weather was better, but there was no vibe whatsoever with school being out. Subsequently, it went back to the spring so as to be a part of the social fabric of school.

The most-awaited proposal concerns rescinding district football scheduling. Districts had been voted in by a narrow vote, but much hue and cry arose.

The IHSA was put in an uncomfortable spot, by taking control of scheduling out of the hands of the individual schools and conferences. Wisely, they sought to put this controversial measure up for another vote, as more time and information is available to the voters.

My guess is that districts will be rescinded. The whole subject has been rehashed over and over again by the media, so I will spare you any more dialogue.

Bottom line - there will never be that one best way to equitably schedule football games and keep conferences intact.

Regarding the prowess of the Oregon boys basketball team in last week’s column, I may have spoken too early. While scouring the Internet, I noticed a score of Polo 50, Oregon 49.

I had to look at that one twice to make sure I was reading it properly.

How do you go from being mentioned among the better teams in 2A to losing to a 1A school that lost all of their starters from the previous year?

Being 1,300 miles away, I didn’t see the game, but will make some educated guesses. The kids from Polo probably played smarter and more cohesively as a team. Additionally, they likely exhibited a better brand of mental toughness.

Don’t know the shooting percentages, but it never hurts either if one team has a particularly hot hand. And finally, turnovers can be a real killer.

Hats off to coach Messer and his gang of overachievers for giving Oregon a wake-up call.

Plan to back in town this week to catch a little bit of the Forreston tourney before knee surgery (torn meniscus). Compared to last year’s star-studded field, this year’s grouping of teams is down.

Nonetheless, that shouldn’t take away from one of the season’s best events. Another favorite for me is the Polo girls tournament that takes place at the same time. Hopefully, I can get there too.

The hair was high, the eggs were green, and the big green guy was in true Christmas mode at Lanark’s “Breakfast with The Grinch” on Saturday, Dec. 14.

For $2 a meal, kids munched on a buffet of Green Eggs and Ham, Grinchmas Pancakes, Whoville Pastries, and Cindy Lou Who Fruit Cups, along with milk or apple juice and coffee for parents.

Ten-year-old Nyla Cross of Lanark didn’t waste anytime munching down her heavily decorated green Grinchmas pancake.

“It’s good,” she said in between bites.

Servers, comprised of Eastland FFA and student council members, dressed in Whoville attire, including the extreme bee hive hair, seen in the popular Dr. Seuss book, animated short, and live-action movie.

“This is a lot of hairspray and a water bottle,” said Eastand FFA Advisor Cindy Feltmeyer, pointing to her high hair while making sure everything was running as planned in Whoville.

Eastland FFA member, Mate Paisley, wore a Grinch onesie while she served green scrambled eggs alongside Grinchmas pancake server, Kendall Preston.

Diners could watch the Grinch movie on the TV or color after eating their Whoville creations.

But it was Deacon Borota, 3, of Lanark, who went right to the big green guy to discuss his Christmas plans.

“He’s been talking to him a lot,”said Deacon’s mom.

Deacon even offered the Grinch two of his candy canes, which the man with the heart two sizes too small politely refused.

The Transformers Team served 180 kids in two seatings during the morning event at the Heritage Center in downtown Lanark.

“This is the first year we’ve tried this,” said one of the Whoville kitchen workers.

Help is available to recycle your Christmas tree The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will once again partner with units of local government and certain high school Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters to conduct the annual Christmas tree collection and recycling program.

Since the program began in 1999, there have been over 15,000 trees collected, with trees averaging around 50 pounds each, that equates to approximately 375 tons of trees which were all turned into usable mulch.

Starting on Dec. 26, the cities and villages that will have drop-off points include: • Oregon: Park District Maintenance Dept., 507 Hill St. • Byron: Byron boat launch lot, E. Blackhawk Dr. (Illinois. 2) • Forreston: 407 N. Locust St. • Leaf River: 605 Main St. • Rochelle: Atwood Park, 10th Ave. & 20th St. • Monroe Center: Lichty’s Landscaping, 309 Pacific St. • Polo: Southwest corner of E. Colden St. & S. Green Ave.

On Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, local FFA chapters will provide curbside pick-up for trees.

“Remove all decorations, lights, plastic bags, and place your tree at your curb by 8 a.m.,” said Paul Cooney, Ogle County Solid Waste Management Specialist. “This pickup service will be offered in Byron, Forreston, Leaf River, Mt. Morris, Oregon, and Polo.”

Hurst was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

At 7:31 p.m., police responded to a disturbance in the 200 block of Parkview Drive resulting in the arrest of Benjamin R. Thrasher, 42, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Thrasher was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Dec. 2 At 11:33 p.m., police responded to a 911 hang up that resulted in the arrest of Keith R. Lawnicki, 28, of Oregon, for disorderly conduct. Lawnicki was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Dec. 3 Haley R. James,19, of Kirkland, was issued a citation at 11:34 a.m. for speeding, 46 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred near the intersection of N. 4th and Fair Streets.

Dec. 6 Stephen M. Ridenhour, 50, of Mt. Morris, was arrested at 2:23 a.m. for driving while license revoked. Ridenhour was also issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 500 block of W. Washington Street.

Dec. 8 Leslie J. Nelson, 42, of Spring Grove, was issued a citation at 12:10 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

Brandon C. Herring, 30, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 9:21 a.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred in the 600 block of E. Washington Street.

Kendrick J. Oriyavong, 16, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 12:27 p.m. for speeding, 44 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Dec. 9 At 8:09 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 300 block of S. 6th Street resulting in the arrest of Ashlee L. Parisi, 29, of Oregon, on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Drew A. Dickens, 19, of Roscoe, was arrested at 11:23 p.m., for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Dickens was also issued citations for improper lane usage, illegal transportation of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and driving while under the influence with blood alcohol content greater than .08%. Dickens was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 600 block of S. 4th Street.

At 11:50 p.m., police, while on a traffic stop, also took a report of a traffic crash that had occurred during the traffic stop, where a 1991 GMC driven by Douglas S. Carr, 50, of Oregon, struck a parked 2001 Dodge owned by Drew A. Dickens, 19, of Roscoe. No citations were issued.

Dec. 12 Christopher L. Cash, 31, of Oregon, was arrested at 2:29 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Deven L. Kenerson, 16, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 7:53 p.m. for disobeying a stop sign. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Ford Streets.

Winston E. Tomlinson, 22, of Rockford, was arrested at 8:47 p.m. for possession of controlled substance. Tomlinson was also issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. These violations occurred in the 800 block of N. 4th Street.

James M. Grothe, 59, of Oregon, was arrested at 10:20 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Grothe was also issued citations for driving without lights when required and driving while under the influence of alcohol with blood alcohol content greater than .08%. Grothe was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 300 block of Franklin Street.

Arlen J. Heeren, 64, of German Valley passed away Friday, Dec. 13, 2019 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

He was born Jan. 4, 1955 in Freeport to Arnold and Ora Mae (Black) Heeren.

On Sept. 10, 1976, Arlen married the love of his life and best friend, Diane Snyder in Baileyville. Diane passed away Oct. 1, 2017.

MARGUERITE “MAGGIE” G. NYE Marguerite “Maggie” G. Nye, 78, passed away in her sleep at home Monday, Dec. 16, 2019 after a long illness.

Maggie was born on April 29, 1941 to E. Kevin and Marguerite (Peltier) Glynn in Chicago. In 1959, she graduated from Aquinas Dominican High School and in 1964 she graduated from the University of Iowa with her B.A. in sociology.

She was an Illinois Licensed Social Worker and worked for the Rochelle Community Hospital and Serenity Hospice.

On June 9, 1964, Maggie married Philip Hastings Nye, Jr. in Chicago.

Maggie served on the Ogle County Board from 1982-1992 and again from

hand-in-hand with his wife, petting cats and eating at pizza buffets.

Surviving are his children Matt (Jennifer) Heeren of Roscoe, Nikki (Eric) Schoeny of Pecatonica, and Ashley (Michael) Nebel of Lake Mills, Wisconsin; brother Jerry (Lois) Heeren of Freeport; three grandchildren Jacob Heeren, Charlotte Heeren and Jack Schoeny,

numerous nieces and nephews and his fishing buddies, Russ Fransen and Rick Taft.

He is preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Funeral services were Thursday, Dec. 19, at the Silver Creek Reformed Church in German Valley with Rev. Grant Mulder officiating. Burial will be in Silver Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his memory.

Jim was a longtime announcer for the Polo Football games. He and wife Joyce owned the Polo Theater many years ago.

Jim coached the Polo Squares girls softball team and pitched for Kitten Ball teams where his sons also played. He golfed daily at Edgewood Golf Course until its closing, was a dog lover who owned a Boxer breed all his life and was very rarely seen without his beloved companions.

Jim was an avid Chicago Bears fan,

enjoyed his Irish heritage, and his jokes and humor were legendary.

sory Board and the HOPE Board.

She was an avid reader, accomplished oil painter and enjoyed traveling with her husband, Phil. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Kevin Glynn.

Maggie is survived by her husband of 55 years, Phil Nye, Jr.; three children: Marguerite (James) Conboy of Denver, Colorado; Philip Nye, III of St. Louis, Missouri: and Mose (Michelle) Nye of Park Ridge; brother, Mose (Doreen) Glynn of Palos Heights; sister, Karen (Larry) Glynn of Du Quoin; and five grandsons:

William Conboy, Philip Nye, IV, Mose Nye, Jr., Jack Nye and Charles Nye. The visitation will be Friday, Dec. 30 from 3-7 p.m. at the Unger-Horner Funeral Home, 400 N. 6th St., Rochelle.

The memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Dec. 21 at St. Bride’s Episcopal Church, 1000 Rt. 64 West, Oregon, with Father Eldred George officiating.

JUDITH ANN (GLAMAN) HITE Judith Ann (Glaman) Hite passed away, peacefully, on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019 in Albemarle, North Carolina with her daughter by her side.

Judi was born in Peoria on April 22, 1956.

She was a graduate of Polo Community High School, class of 1974.

She had a passion for music, dancing,

people and family. Her bubbly spirit and kind heart will be deeply missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harold C. Glaman.

James “Jim” J. Kavanaugh, 89, of Polo, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019, at Polo Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

Jim was born Jan. 6, 1930, in Chicago, the son of Patrick E. and Loretto (Scanlan) Kavanaugh.

On May 28, 1949 in Highland Park, Michigan, he was united in marriage to Ms. Joyce Geisert.

Jim was very active in the Polo Community. He served on the Polo Park Board, Civil Defense Board and flagged for the Polo Fire Department for over 40 years.

OBITUARY DR. JAMES EVERETT URISH Dr. James Everett Urish, 72, died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019 in Rangely, Colorado after battling cancer for over three years.

He was born May 23, 1947 in Rockford, Illinois, to Robert and Lucy (nee Strawbridge) Urish, and grew up in nearby Mt. Morris with siblings Rob and Linda.

While attending Mt. Morris High School, Jim worked farm jobs and at a dairy, also playing football, basketball, and baseball. His teams won conference championships in football and basketball his senior year and he earned All-Conference honors in basketball before graduating in 1965.

Jim went on to play baseball at St. Olaf College where his team won the conference twice and he earned All-Conference honors his junior and senior years. He also played basketball and his team won the conference and made the NCAA Division II tournament his senior year.

The summer before Jim graduated in 1969 with a BA in Economics, he worked at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont. Maria von Trapp of “The Sound of Music” fame told Jim before he left that, “Sometimes it is the people who are most difficult that one enjoys the most!”

After graduation, Jim worked at Kable Printing Company in Mt. Morris before beginning graduate school at the University of Arizona. He tied for first on the comprehensive exam and earned an MBA in 1972, but more importantly,

became a Christian. Following Christ quickly became his supreme passion.

In the summers of 1972 and 1973, he traveled with Christian basketball teams across Europe, Africa, and Israel, sharing the Gospel.

Jim also spent time at L’Abri, Switzerland where he met his future bride, Anne Penny, was tutored by Francis Schaeffer, played for a semi-pro basketball team, and worked at a nearby bakery. He rigorously studied the Bible and concluded that its truths applied to all areas of life.

Jim married Anne in 1977 and Luke was born in 1978, while attending Covenant Seminary in St. Louis. He graduated cum laude with a Masters of Divinity in 1979 and was called to pastor Covenant Presbyterian Church in Lander, Wyoming. Daughters Mimi and Abbie were born there in 1980 and 1983.

Jim coached numerous sports teams for his kids and was deeply involved in the community. He volunteered as chaplain at the jail and hospital, taught World Religion classes at Central Wyoming College, was President of the Wyoming Air Force Academy Parents Club, and earned his Doctor of Ministry in 1994 from Covenant Seminary.

In 2001, Jim was called to Forestgate Presbyterian Church in Colorado Springs. He assisted Jimmy and Vicki Covey’s Air Force Academy cadet ministry and taught Christian Ethics and

Apologetics classes at New Geneva Seminary.

Jim retired in 2014, but counted it a blessing to marry all three children and baptize six grandchildren (with another due in February 2020).

Jim was faithful to God’s calling and steadfastly devoted to his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. His passion for the Gospel, family, and church community will be greatly missed. So too, his character, Bible teaching, love of people, sense of humor, diligent work ethic, humility, compassion, wit, affirming words, and contagious laugh.

He was a gifted communicator and an avid book reader who lived life to the fullest. Jim enjoyed playing golf, traveling, listening to music, watching basketball, cheering on his sports teams, and spending time with his grandkids.

He longed to see his grandchildren grow, learn, and serve the Lord Jesus.

Jim lived for Christ and sought to make his life a testament to the fact that nothing compares to the surpassing knowledge of knowing Christ Jesus!

In August 2016, he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer. Jim suffered through significant pain, but ran his race with endurance to the end.

He is now resting in the presence of the Triune God where he no longer sees in a mirror dimly, but is face to face with his Savior.

As Revelation 21:4 tells us, “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.” This is his experience today… and forever! So we say, with Jim today: “To God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit be the glory forever and ever! Amen.”

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Lucy Urish of Mt Morris, and his father-in-law Junius Penny of Lawrence, Kansas.

He is survived by his loving wife of over 42 years, Anne Urish; children Luke (Brooke) Urish, Mimi (Kevin) Burch, and Dr. Abigail (Ken) Sutton; brother Rob (Karen) Urish of Mt Morris, Illinois and sister Linda Mitchell of Faribault, Minnesota; grandchildren Adalai Burch, Eleanor Burch, Junius Sutton, James Urish, Matthew Sutton, Henry Urish, and Ezekiel Burch (ETA: Feb ’20); and mother-in-law Mary Lou Penny of Lawrence, Kansas.

A funeral service will be held on Dec. 21 at 10 a.m. at Forestgate Presbyterian Church, 970 Northgate Blvd, Colo Springs, Colorado, 80921. Private interment is on Dec. 20.

STATE’S ATTORNEY Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow reports the following court activity.

Sentencings Dec. 9 Nicholas R. Alexander, 19, of Oregon, pleaded guilty to burglary, a class 2 felony.

He was sentenced to 24 months second chance probation, and must submit to DNA testing and random drug testing.

He also must cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment, perform 30 hours public service work, and have no contact with the victim.

Alexander must pay total fines and costs of $1,599.00.

Zachary J. Glazier, 37, of Sterling, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance, a class 4 felony.

He was sentenced to 120 days imprisonment, to be remitted upon successful completion of 18 months probation. He shall not consume alcohol, must submit to random drug testing, and cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as recommended, Count 2, possession of drug paraphernalia, was dismissed pursuant to a plea agreement.

He also must pay total fines and costs of $2,990.00.

Keith R. Hernkind, 37, of Dalton, pleaded guilty to unlawful use of weapons and possession of drug paraphernalia, both Class A misdemeanors. He was sentenced to 40 days imprisonment and 12 months conditional discharge, and must pay total fines and costs of $639.00. Count 1, of unlawful possession of a stolen firearm, was dismissed pursuant to A plea agreement.

Dec. 12 Oscar A. Milan, 28, of Rochelle, pleaded guilty to violation of the Sex Offender Registration.

He was sentenced to 180 days imprisonment and 12 months conditional discharge, and must pay total fines and costs of $804.00.

Joni S. Stewart, 51, of Chicago, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a controlled substance, a class 4 felony.

She was sentenced to 24 months drug probation without a conviction.

She must perform 30 hours public service work, and shall not consume alcohol, must submit to random drug and alcohol testing; cooperate and

satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatments as recommended. She also must pay total fines and costs of $2,290.00.

Count 1, of forgery, was dismissed pursuant to a plea agreement.

Dec. 13 Alexandra C. Schaefer, 28, of Rochelle, pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated battery, Class 2 felonies, and one count of domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor. She was sentenced to 180 days imprisonment and 24 months probation. She shall not consume alcohol, must submit to random drug and alcohol testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessment or treatment as recommended, and must pay total fines and costs of $1199.00.

Schaefer also pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor, and battery, a Class A misdemeanor. She was sentenced to serve 5 days jail and 24 months probation, must perform 30 hours public service work, and must pay total fines and costs of $564.00.

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com An Oregon woman charged with embezzling funds from an organization with ties to the Oregon School District was sentenced to two years of probation for misdemeanor theft and ordered to pay $4,596.66.

One count of felony theft was dis-

missed Angela Burgett, 37, must pay the Oregon Boosters Club $3,482.66 in restitution in $100-a-month increments starting this month. The remaining $1,114 is court costs and fees Burgett took money from the club to use for personal expenses from June of 2018 through April of 2019,

while she was the club’s treasurer.

She was charged April 3, when discrepancies in the club’s accounts were reported to Oregon police, and she pleaded guilty Nov. 12 in Ogle County Court.

Burgett had been an administrative assistant in the Oregon School District’s main office since 2016; before that, she was a secretary at

Oregon High School for 2 years.

Superintendent Tom Mahoney had said her job was unrelated to being treasurer of the boosters club, which operates independently from the school district.

It raises funds through different efforts, and then donates those funds to various school-related activities.
