A Sandwich man was critically injured Dec. 2 when the pick-up truck he was driving was struck by a train southeast of Oregon.

Jeff Pruski, 43, was transported to Mercyhealth Hospital in Rockford in critical

but stable condition. A hospital spokesman said he was listed in fair condition on Monday.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Police said the Pruski was stopped facing southbound in the 2400 Rocky Hollow Road just north of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks as the westbound train was approaching.

Pruski then drove around the gate arm,

which was working properly, just as the train approached the crossing.

The train struck the driver’s side of the truck and pushed the vehicle just off the northwest side of the roadway.

The crash occurred at 8:56 a.m. and remains under investigation.

The Oregon Fire Department and EMS assisted at the scene.

Firemen rescue 27 people, two kittens Crew volunteered their help during blizzard

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Twenty-seven people and two small kittens were rescued from their vehicles

by Forreston Fire Department and EMS personnel after they were stranded in an unseasonably early blizzard last week.

Fire Chief Bob Myers said about a dozen firefighters and EMTs went out during the worst of the storm to rescue motorists stuck in the 12-14 inches of wet, blowing and drifting snow that fell across Ogle County from the afternoon

of Sunday, Nov. 25 to the wee hours of the next morning.

“Some firefighters used their own vehicles to get to the people,” he said.

“We put up 17 in our fire station until the next day. The others had friends or relatives they could stay with in town so we took them there.”

Among the rescued were Chad and Andrea Fernandez, their three children, and two kittens.

Andrea’s grandfather Larry Cornelius, of Forreston, said the family left their home in Brodhead, Wisconsin, on Nov. 25 after the furnace quit working and headed for her mother’s home in Shannon.

They, of course, brought along their pets.

“They had two baby kittens they were bottle-feeding,” Cornelius said.

All was well when they left home where no snow at all fell that day.

The trip went smoothly until they got south of Freeport and encountered increasingly heavy snowfall and slippery roads with deep snow.

On Ill. 72 just into the Shannon Fire District, they couldn’t go any further and were stranded in the vehicle for five hours until Forreston firefighters got there.

Cornelius said the firemen carried the two youngest children, ages 4 and 5, to rescue vehicles because the snow was so deep.

Gouker elected to 4th term at helm of county board

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Ogle County Board Chairman Kim Gouker, of Byron, had smooth sailing Monday evening to a fourth twoyear term at the head of the board.

No one else was nominated for the board’s top post and the vote was a unanimous 24-0.

“Thank you,” Gouker said after the vote. “We’ve got a lot to do in the next four years — building a new jail for one thing.”

The story was the same for vice chairman John Finfrock, of Mt. Morris, who was also elected to a fourth term at second-in-command unanimously and without opposition.

The county board elects a new chairman and vice chairman every two years after the General Election.

Myers said first rescue came around 5 p.m. Sunday when an elderly man got his car stuck on White Eagle Road. He got out of the car, fell in the snow, and was unable to get up.

“It was almost like a blizzard then,” Myers said. “And it just kept getting worse as the night wore on.

All 16 were elected to two-year terms, all of which will expire in 2020 due to reapportionment.

The terms of the remaining eight county board members were not up for re-election this fall but will also expire in 2020.

Gouker told the board that current committee assignments will continue through the month of December, with new board members assuming the committee posts held by the person each replaced.

New committee assignments will be announced at the Dec. 18 meeting.

The snow was blowing and drifting and very deep in some places. It was a sheet of ice underneath.”

The fire department went out for the last time with the firetrucks around 2 a.m., he said, because the vehicles simply couldn’t get through the snow.

The rescues continued a while longer using the brush trucks to get to stranded vehicles and shuttling the people to the department’s new fourwheel drive ambulance for the ride back to the fire station.

But even then, the job wasn’t done.

Department personnel stayed overnight at the fire station to take care

of their overnight guests, and the following morning took the people back to their cars and helped dig them out of the snow until around 11 a.m.

“There was a lot of effort put into it,” Myers said. “Our firemen and EMS stepped up and did what needed to be done.”

Polo Fire Chief Tony Karrow said his department rescued four people who were stranded northwest of Polo on Brookville Road at Canada Road.

Two trucks left the fire station at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and did not return until 11:45 p.m., he said, after both of them got stuck on the way back.

Departments did not get called out for rescues during the storm.

“We staffed the station with extra crews over night just in case, but we did not get called out,” said Mt. Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough.

Oregon Fire Chief Mike Knoup said his department also received no calls related to the storm.

However, the following morning EMTs were called to eight medical calls.

Those, too, were unrelated to the storm, he said.

The Leaf River and German Valley Fire Departments also reported no calls for help during the storm.

Christmas in the Country, sponsored by the Forreston Area Business Association, will officially ring in the holiday season on Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8.

The festivities kick off Friday at 9 a.m. with rolls and coffee at First United Methodist Church.

The annual bazaar and Christmas Corner will also be held at the church.

At 11 a.m., the Methodist Church is again the place to be with their lasagna, soup, sandwich, and dessert luncheon. The luncheon is available until 2 p.m.

While you are in town, stop at the local businesses to sign up for drawings and to enjoy some holiday goodies.

Many of the businesses have extended hours on Friday and will be open until 8 p.m.

The high school and middle school chorus will carol in local businesses and around downtown from 4 to 5 p.m.

They will start at the Forreston State Bank and end at Memorial Park, just in time for the Community Tree Lighting.

The Faith Lutheran Cookie Sale will start at 4 p.m. downtown in the building next to Sweetwood Interiors.

The sale will last until the cookies

are gone; but get there early for the best, most delicious selection.

No holiday celebration would be complete without a visit from Santa.

He will arrive at Memorial Park by fire engine and will help with the tree lighting at 5 p.m.

Kids can visit the Jolly Old Elf at the park until 6.

While you are at the park you can enjoy some hot chocolate sponsored

by Forreston Area Business Association.

At 6 p.m., Santa will travel by tractor drawn wagon to the Forreston Public Library. He will visit with kids until 7:30.

The library will also provide cookies and hot chocolate.

The Forreston Fire Department invites the public to check out the fire trucks and new ambulance from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Cookies, cocoa, and special drawings will be available.

While you are at the fire station, visit the community room for the “make and take” Christmas activity. Different crafts will be provided for kids and parents to create from 6 to 8 p.m.

No matter the weather, our comforting Father will be with us. For this and so much more, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Sandra Ford.

Rev. Charlotte Hoppe led the service for the first Sunday in Advent.

During Advent, we are honoring the 200th anniversary of the hymn, “Silent Night.”

I had the honor of lighting the first candle in our advent wreath.

Sweetwood Interiors is again sponsoring Christmas Tree Decorating Tips. The tips will be Friday from 6:30 to 6:45 p.m., and again on Saturday from 10:30 to 10:45 a.m.

Santa will be available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Bring the kids and get free pictures with Santa.

Charlotte led the children’s message for our young friends, Kaitlyn, Laura, and Harper.

The girls held nativity figures while Charlotte read a story about the birth of Jesus.

We are centering our hearts on the true gift of the season.

After church, I joined the community choir for our last regular practice.

Please make plans to join us for an afternoon of beautiful music on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m.

We are presenting the program, “Behold, a Savior” at Faith United Methodist Church in Polo.

This past Saturday evening, we gathered at the church for the Hanging of the Greens.

After decorating the trees and hanging the garlands, Charlotte led a blessing on our decorated church.

When the work was finished, we went downstairs for a meal and fel-

lowship.

There was a special dessert of a birthday cake to honor Don Hay who celebrated his birthday on Dec. 1.

It was a fun night filled with joy, laughter and Christmas spirit.

Don and Vicki Hay have just returned from a trip to Delaware to visit their son, Mack Hay, his wife, Shea, and their grandchildren, Reef, Ellis, Remington, and Pippin.

The Hays arrived in time for a late dinner with the family on Thanksgiving.

This past Tuesday evening, I joined the Council of Churches meeting.

There are many activities happening this month to help our community. Our many diverse churches are united in this mission.

This coming Saturday, the Polo Council of Churches will have cookies for sale to benefit the families of Honduras.

The money raised from this sale helps to build brick homes in Honduras with the help of Bill Hare’s mission team.

The cookies can be purchased on Saturday, Dec. 8 at First State Bank

in Polo from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Christmas lights are popping up all over the community.

My favorite display right now is the barn at the Ohlwine’s home. The sweet and simple forest of colored lights is beautiful in the dark of the night.

I don’t mind driving home in the dark when there are Christmas lights along the way.

The darkness is made brighter by strings of tiny lights.

Just like the darkness of night is made bright by a tiny light, our world is made lighter when we shine our light for Jesus.

Acts of random kindness, forgiving others, and sharing His love are just some of the ways we can light up our own world.

Accepting His love inspires us to share that love with others not only during Christmas, but the whole year through.

I hope to see you next week at our church when we come together to worship and celebrate the second Sunday in Advent. There is room in our little church in the country.

Six recognized as HCC Distinguished Alumni The Highland Community College Foundation recently recognized six individuals as Distinguished Alumni during the annual ceremony held at the Freeport Club in Freeport.

This is the 24th year the awards have been presented to individuals who have shown community leadership, made their start at Highland Community College and believe in the mission of higher education.

Including these new recipients, the Highland Community College Foundation has recognized 130 individuals have been recognized as Distinguished Alumni.

Among those recognized were Kristin Stinnett, of Polo, and Mike Schiffman, formerly a teacher at Polo High School and an administrator at Forreston schools Stinnett is a 2007 graduate from Highland’s Automotive Mechanics program.

During her time at Highland, instructors, and classmates quickly recognized her skill level, dedication to education along with her willingness to assist others.

She attended Southern Illinois University – Carbondale where she completed her bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology and her master’s degree in Workforce Education.

Stinnett, who became a Highland instructor in 2018, brings two years of teaching experience from SIU-C to her current role of Automotive

Schiffman, of Freeport, graduated from Highland with his associate’s degree in 1992 followed by his bachelor of science degree from Illinois State University.

He went on to earn a master’s degree in Administration and Edu-

cation from Western Illinois University. Schiffman began his educational career teaching history.

He later served as dean of students at Forreston High School, elementary principal at Forreston Grade School, and secondary principal at Pearl City High School.

He served as superintendent of schools for Dakota Community Unit School District for five years prior to being named superintendent of schools for Freeport School District in 2015.

Schiffman has served as member on several boards such as noon

Rotary, Lions Club, and the Freeport Chamber Board.

In 2015, he was elected the Professional Development Chairperson for the Northwest Division of the Illinois Association of School Administrators (IASA), which honored him with the Northwest IASA Exemplary Service to Education Award for his exemplary leadership contributions to Illinois public schools.

The Eagle Nature Foundation (ENF) is seeking volunteers to help with its 59th Annual Mid-Winter Bald Eagle Count on Jan. 26 and 27, 2019.

This annual bald eagle count is being conducted throughout the Midwest from Northern Minnesota to Louisiana.

To eliminate duplication, the count is actually a three hour count on Saturday, with Sunday being used only if weather, or health, does not allow a person or organization to count the bald eagles in their own locality on the official count day.

At least 90% of the eagles will be counted before 11 a.m. on Saturday.

Each year some counters start the day by counting the bald eagles that may be seen leaving their nighttime roosts, while it is still so dark that the birds are only silhouettes flying

overhead.

Some conservation organizations Paul Gebbia, of Byron, has been a hit at First Fridays with his stand-out performances use teams to count the bald eagles on guitar and vocals and capable assistance from his daughter/stage manager Havah. as a project for their club. This annual count was started and coordinated for 20 years by the late Elton Fawks from Moline.

Terrence Ingram, President of ENF, from Apple River, has been the coordinator of the count for the past 38 years. “This count has been the most important bald eagle count in the nation for many, many years. It was the results of this count in the early 1960’s that truly documented the decline of the bald eagle in the nation,� Ingram said. “Now this count is the only accurate record of how our eagles are reproducing in the Midwest. Since the USFW removed the bald eagle from the Endangered Species List in 2007,

The cause for this low percentage of documented immatures on this count is unknown and any suggestions about a cause have been purely speculative,� Ingram said. “It could be that the immatures are living somewhere else, or some-

thing could actually be affecting their survival: such as starvation; poisoning by chemicals, such as Roundup or Neonicitinoids; or a disease, such as West Nile Virus; or many of the young may be getting killed by vehicle collisions or wind turbines,� Ingram said.

Organizations and volunteers for this count are needed all across the Midwest. ENF wants to document the bald eagles that may be found all along the Mississippi River, from Minnesota to Louisiana, as well as along the Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Rock, Pecatonica, Des Moines, Iowa,

Skunk, Cedar, Turkey, Maquoketa and Wisconsin rivers, as well as many of the historic inland wintering areas, which the bald eagle still uses.

IN BRIEF Scholarships available for engineering The Rock River Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers is offering college scholarships to high school seniors.

Applications are available now until Jan. 18, the application deadline, from high school guidance counselors at all high schools in Ogle,

Applications will be judged on national standard test scores, essays, transcripts, and extracurricular activities.

Scholarships will be awarded only to students attending an accredited engineering program.

In its 2018-19 cycle, the chapter will award at least one $1,000 scholarship.

Last year the chapter awarded five $1,000 scholarships.

Local scholarships are made possible throughout the chapters annual fundraisers for that purpose.

Brigham Finch has been selected as Oregon High School’s Senior of Distinction for the month of November.

Students are chosen after being nominated by OHS staff.

“Brigham is one of the most dependable students in our school,” said Kim Radostits, OHS Spanish teacher. “He does very well in his classes and encourages his peers to do so as well. Not only is he supportive of his peers in the classroom, but he supports them in their extracurricular activities as well. He represents our school on Stateline Quiz Bowl, Academic Bowl, the musical, the plays and in Band.

“Outside of school he can often be found helping out others or playing on one of the few male volleyball teams in the area. Furthermore, what I admire most about Brigham is that he truly does set out to be a good role model and has taken the time to make our underclassmen feel very comfortable at OHS,” Radostits said.

The seventh grade Eagles were up next. They were facing the previously undefeated Indians.

Pecatonica pounced on the first ‘toss-up’ question but DLR quickly responded, answering three questions in history, current events and literature.

At halftime, the Eagles held onto a narrow 70-50 lead. Down the stretch, the Eagles answered four out of the remaining ten questions to claim the 165-75 victory.

Abigail Fletcher paced DLR with five correct responses.

Owen Flanagan and Alyssa Leary each added an answer.

On Dec. 3 Polo came to DLR for the final regular season match. The seventh graders competed first.

The Eagles were off and running early as they responded correctly on four out of the first ten ‘toss-up’ questions.

DLR led at half-time, 75-15. The Eagles did not allow the Marcos to get back into the match as they dominated the second half.

They answered seven out of the final 10 questions right to claim the 195-25 victory.

Fletcher led DLR with an amazing ten correct answers and Flanagan added one.

The seventh grade Eagles finish the conference in third place.

In the eighth grade match, the visiting Marcos controlled the first half

with five correct ‘toss-up’ answers.

They held a 45-100 lead at the break. The Eagles regrouped in the second half to mount a comeback.

Three quick right answers in the calendar, Harry Potter and art allowed the Eagles to overtake the lead.

Down the stretch, DLR answered two of the remaining five questions correctly to Polo’s one to win the match, 150-120.

Ethan Schafer led the Eagles with three answers. Fox, Nyderek, Bryan Immel and Kaitlyn Drew all contributed one.

The Academic Bowl teams from David L. Rahn Junior High completed their regular season with matches at Pecatonica and with Polo.

On Nov. 28 the Eagles were on the road to take on the Indians.

Pecatonica’s eighth grade quickly showed why they are the top team in the conference.

Despite answering the first ‘tossup’ question correctly, the Eagles fell behind quickly when the Indians responded correctly on five of the first ten questions.

The host team held a 50-130 lead at the break. The Eagles tried to catch up by buzzing in on two ‘tossups’ in the second half but the Indians countered with four correct answers to take the match, 85-215.

SPORTS Hawk bowlers defeat Rockford Lutheran The Oregon Hawks bowling team defeated the Rockford Lutheran Crusaders on Nov. 30.

The boys team had a 3,719 total pin fall to Lutheran’s 2,505 total pin fall.

Oregon was lead by Austin Strite with a 682 series. He was followed closely by Kyle Strite with a 674, Jacob Smith with a 606 series, Justin Poole with a 595 series, Charlie Bachman with a 588 series, and Eddie Buttens with a 574 series.

Kyle Strite had the high game for the Hawks with a 267. This takes the Hawks to a 7-0 record on the year.

The Lady Hawks had a 2,680 total pin fall to Lutheran’s 2,280 total pin fall. The Lady Hawks were lead by Rebbeca Meyers with a 571 series. She was followed by Alysa Conley with a 533 series, Sammantha Meyers with a 475 series, Hannah Kaltenbrun

Lady Hawks win, lose Genoa-Kingston 40, Oregon 38: The Hawks trailed 25-19 at halftime, rallied to cut the deficit to 29-28 after three, and kept it close throughout, but could not beat the Cogs in a Big Northern Conference game at the Blackhawk Center on Nov. 30.

Jenae Bothe led the Hawks with 13 points.

Oregon 50, South Beloit 31: Ella Martin paced a balanced attack with 12 points as the Hawks handled the SoBos a loss at the Blackhawk Center Dec. 1.

With Milliman, Herbst, Paul and Clark, the Hawks have four legitimate threats to advance downstate, the most in several years. That is the key reason Crandall feels the team will do well in the bigger meets where quality over quantity takes

precedence.

At last year’s sectional, Herbst lost 3-1 to eventual champ, before bowing out in the wrestlebacks.

Paul made it to the semifinals, but also lost in the wrestlebacks. The year before, Clark was also within a match away out of advancing from sectional to state.

Wrestlers begin season at Morrison dual meet

The 2018-19 wrestling season kicked off in Morrison last week with the Hawks dropping the season opener to the Dixon Dukes 43-32 and taking a 43-32 win over the host Mustangs.

The Hawks have a lot of young wrestlers and as experience grows and weights get sorted out, they look like it will be a solid team.

One glaring hole is the lack of wrestlers in the top two weight classes, meaning that most teams will have a 12 point advantage at the start. That was the case with Dixon and it was the margin of victory.

Oregon started strong against the Dukes with senior Noah Paul reaching the 100 career win mark with an 18-3 technical fall at 3:13, finishing the match with takedown into a turk for five points.

Jokiah Sewell got roughed up in the 145 pound match, trailing 13-3 when he was taken down and pinned in a front headlock 33 seconds into the third period.

Oregon got the points back when 152 pound senior Chase Clark caught a ball and chain and turned with a half nelson at 2:55. Clark joined Paul in the 100 win club with that victory.

Come tournament time, the Oregon wrestling team could be special.

With four top-flight wrestlers, the Hawks look to score better in the bigger meets than in duals.

“Tourney-wise, we can bring,” Oregon coach Kip Crandall said.

“Last year, we won the Polo Invite and were second at Leroy.”

Leading the way for the Hawks is returning state-placer Jacob Milliman, who is No. 3 at 113 in the illinoismatmen.com pre-season rankings.

“Jacob’s naturally gifted,” Crandall said. “If he improves his practice habits and buys into the work aspect, the sky’s the limit.”

Oregon will be loaded at 106-113 with also sophomore Andrew Herbst and junior Sam Flores-Minnis.

“Sam is returning after being gone from the program,” Crandall said. “Andrew has gotten bigger and stronger from last year. Not only is he a technician, but he’s put the time in the weight room.”

Herbst is certified at 113, but could be 106 later in the season.

Noah Paul comes back for his senior year with the coveted spot downstate still eluding him.

“He knows what he needs to do to improve and get there,” Crandall said. “It’s up to him to do it.”

In a milestone in the first meet of the year, both Paul and Chase Clark won their 100th matches.

“Chase works as hard as anyone in the practice room,” Crandall said.

At 182, Adam Glendenning and Zach Crandall will vie for mat time.

Crandall was a surprise sectional qualifier last year.

“Adam’s a brawler. He wins matches because he outworks his opponent,” Crandall said. “Zach is like that too. Though he is not technically as talented as others, he is tenacious and hard working.”

Sophomore Austin Ebert saw varsity time at the end of last year and will help fill holes in the middle weights.

A couple freshmen with promise are Jokiah Sewell (145) and Daniel Dominguez (170).

“Jokiah had good technique, body awareness and works hard,” Crandall said. “Daniel is also a hard worker and is less raw than I originally thought.”

One thing that will hurt the team is no one at 220 or 285.

“It’s frustrating,” said Crandall, who like many a small-school wrestling coach has a challenge of not enough bodies to complete a 14-man varsity roster.

All together, there are about 20 kids in the program. After a few duals, the Hawks compete at the Stillman Valley Invitational on December 15 and Abe’s Rumble (55team dual meet) in Springfield on December 28-29.

“We had a good showing at Abe’s last year, even though we aren’t necessarily a dual team,” Crandall said. “This could be another fun year for us.”

Hawks win a thriller against at “Pack the Place” Oregon downs GK 72-67

Playing the second part of a “Pack the Place” varsity girls/boys doubleheader, the young Hawks gave their fans a real treat on Nov. 30.

“It was a real neat atmosphere with the large crowd and both school’s pep bands playing,” Oregon coach Quinn Virgil said.

It was a continuation of a fan-friendly rivalry started last year at Genoa, which also met with big success in terms of the sportsmanship exhibited by both team’s fan bases.

Last year, Oregon gave G-K all they could handle in nearly pulling off the upset. This year’s contest was another close one, with the final outcome not determined until the final minute with Oregon already matching its win total in BNC last year of one victory.

“It was a fun game and a great way to start conference play out,” Virgil said. “It was close all the way, with neither team ahead by more than five points.”

The Hawks put up 25 fourth-quarter points to go from a narrow 47-45 third quarter lead for the win.

“With a minute to go, Ryker Finch took a charge,” Virgil said. “Other important plays were Jackson Buck scoring on a backdoor pass from Trey Woolsey and a steal by Noah Campos.”

The most exciting play had to be Dalton Hermes nailing a 3/4 court shot at the end of the third quarter to give Oregon the lead. He banked it in, as the crowd went nuts.

“Overall, we shot well and took good shots,” Virgil said. “I thought we executed quite well also. So many people did a nice job for us.”

In the final period, Oregon went 13-for-20 from the free throw line, as four Cog players fouled out.

Woolsey made the bulk of those charity tosses on his way to a game-high 28 points.

In the first half, it was Woolsey, Hermes and Eli Rufer doing all the scoring.

Here’s my take on it: This is a non story. The real story coming out of Byron was a fantastic football game with Monticello for the state title.

I relate to those teenagers from Byron in that when I was in high school and if a group from my football team was planning to do an Oreo Run, I may have joined right in.

It sounds weird now, but as a 17-year old, it might make perfect sense.

And, it wasn’t like these guys were doing it in daylight and exposing themselves, like the streaking craze of my 1970s generation.

Here’s the biggest difference between when I was in school and now.

School boards, administrators

and the media would not give a stunt like this the time of day.

Instead, the coach of a particular sport had the authority to discipline as he saw fit, such as running extra sprints or laps after practice.

But, as a local superintendent told me, schools must take steps to protect themselves from liability.

The real problem is not a bunch of yahoos running around with an Oreo in their nether regions, but how litigious we’ve become as a society.

Case number two at Nazareth Academy is about the whining done when one’s team doesn’t win. Sadly, there is also the litigious element.

Chicago Simeon lost a football playoff game to Nazareth and accused a Nazareth parent of influencing the final outcome.

In an actual lawsuit, it was claimed the parent was on the sidelines in a referee’s uniform consulting with the game officials on what calls to make to ensure Nazareth won the game.

A complaint was also filed with the IHSA, one of a multitude they get on yearly basis, most of which have no credibility, as was the case

with this one.

Like the Byron story, it made national news.

Again, the real story was Nazareth’s state title over St. Charles North in the 7A finals. That was hardly covered by media from Chicago, but the preposterous claims sure were.

At least the Register Star’s article on Byron was well researched, whereas the Naz-Simeon story was based on hearsay. It was also an insult to the officiating crew for that game.

Simeon is primarily African-American, but we can’t say this was racially motivated.

I’ve been around sports long enough to know there is equal opportunity complaining when it comes to both whites and blacks.

No matter what race they are, parents have been claiming foul forever when the teams their kid plays on loses.

Rather than accepting a loss, especially if we don’t think it to be fair, today’s society has taught us to act like little kids if we don’t get our way.

wo teams in the IHSA state finals in football made more headlines off the field than on it. Both Byron and Nazareth Academy were national news after two completely separate incidents.

Administrators at Byron were confronted with an embarrassing situation when it was reported to them that several members of the football team ran naked across the school’s football field with an Oreo cookie in their buttocks.

Apparently, there is such a thing as an “Oreo Run”, whereby a person runs naked in this manner.

Byron’s attempt at the Oreo Run was Friday night before the team’s first playoff game.

After an investigation by school officials, several players were suspended for some of the playoff games.

Initially, concerns were raised about hazing taking place in conjunction with the nude cookie run.

However, the investigation also concluded no coercion, as all participants volunteered for the activity.

Nonetheless, an article appeared on the front page of the Sunday sports section of the Rockford Reg-

Hawks beat Belvidere North, fall to Rock Falls

BY RANDY HOLLAND The Hawk wrestlers hosted Belvidere North and conference rival Rock Falls at the Blackhawk Center on Dec. 1 and overcame a three forfeit deficit to beat the Blue Thunder 47-30.

But the Rockets were on fire, rolling over Belvidere North 63-12 in the middle meet and trouncing the Hawks in the third dual.

Wrestling started at 145 pounds against the Thunder and Oregon racked up three pins and a decision before they gave up a forfeit at 182 pounds.

Jokiah Sewell got the first pin, a granby into a headlock at 3:22.

Austin Ebert caught a cradle at the start of the second, pinning at 2:31. At 160, Chase Clark tilted for three points to start the third and turned with the butcher at 5:04 to give Oregon a n 18-0 lead.

Daniel Dominguez went to overtime tied at two and the score stayed the same through the first two overtime periods, Dominguez a tick too late on a couple of scoring chances.

He picked up a locked hands point and got let up in the third overtime and held on to take a 4-2 win.

After the forfeit, Zachary Crandall had two sets of backpoints on the way to a 17-2 technical fall at 5:56, finishing it with a with a double leg takedown.

Oregon forfeited the top two weight classes to cut the lead to 26-18, but Sam Flores got six back with a forfeit at 106.

Andrew Herbst added six more at 113, working into a stack in 47 seconds.

Jacob Milliman had a tough go of it at 120. He was saved by the buzzer in the first and trailed 9-4 when he was caught in a cradle at 3:48. A forfeit at 126 left the Hawks clinging to a 38-30 lead.

Isaac Brooks sealed the team win with a pin on a takedown to the back in a chicken wing and a half nelson at 3:08.

In the final match, Noah Paul trailed 5-4 when he reversed in the third and rode out, fighting off a late reversal to take a hard fought 6-5 win.

Ebert opened it at 160 against Rock Falls.

He was reversed to his back for three points in the second before he went over in a chicken wing and was pinned at 3:08.

Dominguez had another tough match, a takedown with six seconds left giving him a 3-1 win, a rare bright spot in the meet.

After the top weight forfeits, the Hawks were facing an uphill battle.

Flores lost two sets of backpoints in an 8-0 major decision loss.

Down 34-3, Head Coach Kip Crandall juggled the lineup to try to get some points back. It went south right away.

Zac Cox took the mat at 113 and was down 6-2 when he was turned in a half nelson at 3:38 and the hole was six points deeper.

Herbst bumped up to 120 and trailed 4-2 when he found a cradle and pinned at 2:28, only the second bright spot in the meet.

Milliman bumped to 126 and got roughed up, trailing 10-4 in the third when he lost a takedown to his back in a cradle at 5:22.

At 132, Brooks took a 12-3 major decision loss, giving up five takedowns in the match.

At 138, Paul was riding tough tied at two until 25 seconds left in the match when he was reversed to his back for a five point move and he dropped a 7-3 decision.

Sewell got an escape at the start the third to tie the score at four but lost a takedown right at the buzzer to drop a tough 6-4 decision.

The Rockets forfeited to Clark to end the meet, another rare bright spot.

2018 4-H Achievement Celebration Winners listed Ogle County’s top 4-H members and clubs were honored for outstanding achievement at a special program held Nov. 11 in the Byron Middle School Theatre.

Top county honors went to 4-H teens Julia Heller, Dixon and Grace Mongan, Oregon.

Heller, a member of the Grand Detour Greens 4-H Club and Mongan, a Carefree 4-H Club member, were the recipients of the Co-op Watch Awards sponsored

by Ogle County Farm Bureau and its affiliates.

Watches are awarded each year to the two 4-H’ers with the most impressive records of long-term leadership and service at the club level and beyond.

Lauren Carlson, Byron, was the recipient of a $50 cash award sponsored by the Ogle County 4-H Foundation.

The Foundation Award is presented annually to a single 4-H’er who has shown leadership skill, a willingness to

help with 4-H activities, and has served as a positive example to younger members.

Four youth were challenged to greater leadership and service as recipients of the “I Dare You” Leadership Award. New owners of William Danforth’s inspiring book, “I Dare You”, these youth were selected based on their previous leadership, citizenship, and project work.

OBITUARY LEONA C. HAYENGA Leona C. Hayenga, 101, died peacefully on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018 at Dixon Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on May 22, 1917 in Oregon, the daughter of John and Jennie (Johnson) Dirksen.

Leona graduated in 1934 from Mt. Morris High School and married Harry L. Hayenga in 1936.

Leona’s love of the outdoors, animals and gardening led them to farming in the Lee and Ogle County areas for more than 40 years.

They milked Holstein cows, raised chickens and horses, as well as various other livestock and crops.

After Harry’s death in 1973, Leona continued to milk cows and raise chickens, always with one of her prized

German shepherds at her side.

After retirement in 1981, Leona moved to a farmette in rural Ashton where she continued raising chickens and boarding horses, as well as working for a neighboring dairy farm.

Even after leaving the farmette in 2008, when she moved to Dixon, Leona (affectionately known as “Grandma Great” or “Amazing Gram”) continued to share her love of the land and animals with four generations through her wonderful stories.

She loved spending time with her

family, especially on the farm, and was an avid reader and crossword puzzle solver.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janis and Duane Butterbaugh; daughterin-law, Mary Lynn Hayenga; granddaughters, Deanna Butterbaugh (Barb Phillips), Kris (Larry) Williams; and granddaughter-in-law, Susan Butterbaugh; great-grandchildren: Sam, Nick, Kori (Cody), Matthew, Mary Ellen (Missy) and Teresa (Maghen); and great-great-grandchildren, Lauren, Car-

ter, Jaron, and Keaghen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; sisters, Anna Marie Castle and Helen Dirksen; brother, Mike Dirksen; son, Roger F. Hayenga; grandsons, David Butterbaugh and Brad Hayenga; granddaughter, Mary Ann (Butterbaugh) Marconi; and great-great-granddaughter, Amelia.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 11 a.m. at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon, preceded by a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Frank Lay will officiate.

Burial will be at Ebenezer Cemetery, rural Oregon.

A memorial fund has been established for Unity Hospice or Heifer International.

Holcomb and Armour Roads at 4:43 a.m. and found a van had been traveling westbound on Holcomb Road when the person driving the vehicle drove into the north ditch striking a culvert.

The vehicle then went airborne striking a stop sign and rolling over several times prior to coming to a stop in the field.

The driver of the vehicle, Kyle D. Smith, 27, of Byron, had left the scene on foot prior to emergency vehicles arriving but was later located at a residence in Holcomb.

He is scheduled to appear in court in January.

Montavion Ross, 35, no address given, was arrested at 8:45 p.m. after a traffic stop at 201 McConaughy Ave., Rochelle, for driving while license suspended.

Ross was also cited for an equipment violation.

Davis Junction, was eastbound on East Holcomb Road when it failed to negotiate a curve. It left the north side of the road, struck a tree, and rolled over onto its roof.

Doane was transported to Swedish American Hospital by Lynn-Scott-Rock ambulance with minor injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

Nov. 26 At 6 a.m., police investigated a one-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of First Street and Gale Street where a 2006 International plow driven

by City of Oregon street department employee James R. Morris, slid into some wooden poles.

During removal of the plow, several other poles were knocked over as well as damage done to the city plow. No citations were issued.

At 4:22 p.m., police responded to a suspicious person call in the 700 block of Franklin Street resulting in issuing Daetrone J. Mosley, 23, of Chicago, citations for operating a vehicle with expired registration plates and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

These violations occurred in the 700 block of Franklin Street.

Dec. 1 At 1:53 a.m., police responded to a disturbance in the 500 block of South Second Street resulting in the arrest of John A. Hitchcock, 36, of Oregon, for aggravated domestic battery.

Hitchcock was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 30 Kira K. Guenzler, 34, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 12:40 p.m. for passing a school bus while loading or unloading. This violation occurred in the 1100 block of Jefferson Street.

Stroh, 89, of Oregon, and a 2005 Dodge driven by David A. Rudis,47, of Oregon. Stroh was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
