Blizzard sets records, leaves motorists stranded Sheriff says 198 vehicles got stuck in storm

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com An early winter storm on Sunday set records, closed schools and government offices, and left scores of vehicles stranded in roadways and ditches across Ogle County.

The heavy snowfall and strong winds created blizzard conditions across much of northern Illinois, leaving some roads in the county still impassable on Monday morning.

Sheriff Brian VanVickle said from Sunday evening into Monday morning, 198 vehicles were stranded in roadways and ditches.

“The ground wasn’t frozen, so if you slid off the road you were stuck, and it was a nasty slushy snow,” he said. “It was a long day and it didn’t end until Monday morning.”

The stuck vehicles included township and state snowplows.

Eighty vehicles remained stranded Monday morning, many of them in the middle of the roads, VanVickle said.

The much-predicted storm began with drizzle around 8 a.m. Sunday that soon turned to large moisture-laden flakes.

The snow increased in intensity throughout the afternoon and evening, leaving behind a foot or more of snow by the time it ended in the early hours on Monday.

Drivers experienced increasingly slippery roads by mid-afternoon, compounded by decreasing visibility by early evening.

Parts of Ill. 26 and Ill. 64 were closed due to the extreme snow conditions.

The Illinois Department of Transportation closed the highways from Mt. Morris to Carroll County after several vehicles got stuck on the snowy roadways.

Portions of Ill. 72 were also closed.

Several motorists were left stranded in their vehicles after the roads were closed, VanVickle said.

Deputies driving the department’s sixwheel drive armored vehicle rescued 13 people and took them to safety.

“Some opted to spend the night in their cars, and we checked on them throughout the night,” he said.

County deputies stopped calling out tow trucks Sunday night, because it created only more hazards for other motorists, deputies, and tow drivers.

“If your vehicles goes into the ditch, it will be left there,” the sheriff department’s Facebook posting read.

Ogle County Highway Engineer Jeremy Ciesiel said the icy road surfaces under the heavy snow, along with high winds made it impossible to keep the roads clear.

“It was white-out conditions in the evening which made it very difficult,” he said.

The county’s snowplows stopped their efforts around 7 p.m. Sunday, Ciesiel said, and several drivers spent the night at the highway department office to be sure they would be there to begin again at 3 a.m. on Monday.

Some plows ended up getting stuck when they went back out.

“The blizzard conditions created large drifts that snowplows couldn’t get through which made it necessary to use our heavy equipment,” Ciesiel said.

Vehicles still stranded in the roadways further complicated plowing.

“We cleared as much as we could until they were removed,” he said.

Snowplow drivers were out again on Tuesday morning, still pushing back snow and slush.

Schools and government offices in Ogle and several other surrounding counties were closed on Monday, allowing time for the roads to be cleared.

The storm barreled out of the Rocky Mountains, across Kansas and then into Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin before heading into Indiana and Michigan and on to the northeastern states.

In the local area, most snowfall totals were in the one-foot range, making it the snowiest November on record with five days to go.

The storm also produced the most ever snow on a single day in November in the region.

While most places in northern Illinois were buried in snow, the storm left the northwestern corner of the state unscathed with no snowfall reported in some places, including Lena.

At the command the of the crowd to “light it up,” Mt. Morris’ Christmas light show burst into illumination Nov. 24, synced with holiday tunes.

Jerry Stauffer, who has turned his yard at 214 W. First St. into an array of holiday decorations boasting 50,000 lights, told the crowd of around 300 that the display was voice activated.

He asked them to yell “light it up” to get the show going.

When the first attempt yielded no results, he requested a second try, louder than the first.

At that, the display began to hum and then erupted into color and motion, all set to music.

Stauffer dedicated the light show to family friend, the late Alice Zickuhr, who encouraged him to do holiday decorating after seeing the lights he put up at his parents’ home.

Stauffer’s home, which he purchased three years ago, once belonged to Zickuhr and her husband Ralph.

Santa Claus was also on the

scene, hearing children’s wishes in a 103-year-old sleigh owned by the Stengel family.

Stauffer said this year’s show is themed “Whimsical,” and he plans to make it an annual event.

“Next year it will be even bigger,” he promised.

The lights are powered by more than a mile of drop cords, he said.

Those attending donated $500 for the Loaves & Fish Food Pantry in Mt. Morris.

Hot dogs, cookies, and other refreshments were served in Stauffer’s garage.

Stauffer was appreciative of those who helped with the event and made cookies.

“Thanks to everyone who helped put this on,” he said.

Cookies were provided by the Mt. Morris Community Women’s Club, Campus Cafe, Paula Diehl, Delores Wolber, Barb Diehl, Peggy Afflerbaugh, and Julie Robinson.

The light show will run from dusk to 10 p.m. every evening until Jan. 2.

Anyone driving by to view the lights can tune into radio frequency 104.1 FM to hear the music.

Candlelight Walk draws 3,000 to Oregon Nov. 24

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com An estimated 3,000 people turned out Nov. 24 for the 32nd Candlelight Walk, Oregon’s official beginning of the holiday season.

“We’re very excited about the number of people who came,” said Oregon Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Debbie Dickson. “Many of them came from out of town. We had visitors from Rockford, Rockton, Lombard, and the Quad Cities. One family of five from Rockford told me they have made it a tradition for several years.”

Businesses, decorated for Christmas and offering holiday bargains, welcomed guests throughout the evening in the downtown, at Conover Square, and beyond.

Santa Claus made his annual arrival via Oregon firetruck before setting up shop at ADM Studios Even Mother Nature cooperated, providing mild temperatures and dry skies.

One of the highlights of the event was brand new this year.

“Santa’s Cyclone Center was a smash hit,” Dickson said.

Participants had 15 seconds in a wind box to grab as many small slips of paper as they could and shove them through a slot.

On the slips of paper were prizes.

“More than $1,000 in prizes were donated by our local businesses,” Dickson said.

Food vendors on Candy Cane Lane sold out, she said.

Other popular attractions were the horse-drawn wagon rides through the downtown, the live reindeer, and the Paw Patrol characters on hand at businesses in the downtown.

Dickson credited sponsors and volunteers for the event’s success.

“We’re extremely grateful to all our generous sponsors,” she said.

Christmas in the Village offers family events Visit Mt. Morris on Saturday, Dec. 1 to partake in several free, family holiday happenings at Christmas in the Village in Mt. Morris.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include several different businesses and organizations offering family fun.

The annual Craft and Vendor Fair and Bake Sale at Pinecrest Grove Community Center will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Did you know an average of more than 1,000 home fires a year started when Christmas trees or holiday decorations ignited?

These fires caused an estimated annual average of 25 civilian deaths, 60 civilian injuries and $30 million in direct property damage.

Again this holiday season the Mt. Morris Fire Protection District will be participating in the statewide safety program “Keep the Wreath Red.” The program is very simple, a wreath has been placed on the front of the Mt. Morris Firehouse. The wreath is covered in red bulbs.

If a fire occurs during the holiday season caused by holiday decorations, a bulb will be changed to white.

So far Mt. Morris hasn’t had to change a bulb to white since this program was started in 2004.

If you follow some of the fire safety tips listed below the wreath will be kept red all season.

Holiday Decorating Safety Tips: • Use caution with holiday decorations and whenever possible, choose those made with flame-resistant, flame-retardant or non-combustible materials. * Natural Christmas trees always involve some risk of fire. To minimize the risk, get a fresh tree and keep it watered at all times. Do not

put the tree within three feet of a fireplace, space heater, radiator, or heat vent.

• Decorate with children in mind.

Do not put ornaments that have small parts or metal hooks, or look like food or candy, on the lower branches where small children can reach them. Trim protruding branches at or below a child’s eye level.

• Do not burn Christmas tree branches, treated wood, or wrapping paper in a home fireplace or wood stove.

• Purchase only lights and electrical decorations bearing the name of an independent testing lab, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and maintenance.

• Carefully inspect new and previously used light strings and replace damaged items before plugging lights in.

• Do not overload extension cords, instead use a rated power strip and do not run an electrical cord under a rug.

• Check your strands of lights to determine the number of strands that may be connected. Connect no more than three strands of push-in type bulbs together. A maximum of 50 total bulbs of the larger screw-in type bulbs.

• Always unplug lights before replacing light bulbs or fuses.

• Don’t mount lights in any way that can damage the cord’s wire insulation (i.e., using clips, not

All that remains is for the school board to approve the agreement, which it is expected to do at its Dec. 17 meeting.

Statutes require that an SRO must be a full-time police officer, he said.

In a related matter, the city council approved buying a used 2014 Dodge Charger for the school resource officer from Veto Enterprises, Sycamore, at a cost not to exceed $16,000.

Police Chief Darin DeHaan said the car has low miles on it and is fully outfitted as a police vehicle.

Mt. Morris man pleads not guilty to abusing baby 20-year-old faces six felony counts of aggravated battery

BY KATHLEEN SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com A Mt. Morris man accused of severely physically abusing a 5-month-old girl pleaded not guilty Nov. 21 in Ogle County Court to six counts of aggravated battery to a child.

If convicted, Shane Wilson, 20, faces 6 to 30 years on each count.

He would be required to serve

85 percent of his sentence, and w o u l d have to register as a violent offender against youth.

He is ​Shane D. Wilson in jail on $500,000 bond. His first pretrial hearing is Dec. 17; he is represented by public defender Dennis Riley.

The baby was admitted to a Rockford hospital on Oct. 30 with a fractured skull and broken ribs, arms,

legs, and wrists. She also had cranial bleeding and a collapsed lung, investigators said.

Her condition was not available Thursday.

Wilson is not related to the child, but lives in the same house, Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

Wilson, who has a history of domestic abuse, was located around midnight Oct. 31 and jailed on warrants from two previous cases.

He was charged in September 2017 with aggravated battery of a pregnant person and misdemeanor domestic battery; he was sentenced that same month to a year and a half of probation on the misdemeanor.

He was charged in March of this year with aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery and three counts of aggravated battery – for attempting to strangle a different woman – as well as felony possession of marijuana and misdemeanor resisting; he pleaded guilty to the aggravated domestic battery charge in June and was sentenced to two years probation.

The first warrant was issued for failure to pay or appear in the 2017 case, and the other on a petition, filed Aug. 31 to revoke his probation in this year’s case, also for failure to pay or appear.

That petition was amended Nov. 6 to reflect his new charges.

Currently the children are exploring countries and projects offered through Heifer to understand the needs of the people and how the projects help improve the lives of the families.

The funds raised will help to pay the school fees for about 90 Las Palmas, Honduras, school children.

By Karen Merlak The major winter storm came as predicted. We are very grateful for the many snowplow drivers who work to keep the roads clear for us.

For His comfort during the storms outside and the storms in our lives, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Judy Nettz.

In Rev. Charlotte Hoppe’s absence, Pastor Stephen Epps gave the message of the morning.

James Hopkins led the children message for our young friends, Kaitlyn, Laura, and Harper.

The pending snowstorm was too much for the afternoon activities.

Our practice for the Christmas cantata was canceled for today.

The Polo Council of Churches will once again host the cookie sale to Benefit the Honduras Project.

On Saturday evening, Charlotte and I headed over to Oregon for the annual Candlelight Walk.

We visited many of the businesses and stopped for dinner along the way.

Charlotte and I watched the performance by Bev and Chuck Kearns at Conover Square and visited with James and Nancy Hopkins who were enjoying the sights, too.

After Candlelight Walk, we traveled to Mt. Morris to see the holiday lights. We had a fun evening to start the holiday season.

Many area families gathered for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Charlotte joined James and Nancy Hopkins and their son, Jim Hopkins, his wife, Dana, and children, Connor and Abigail for a dinner out.

Later in the afternoon, Char-

lotte visited the family of Kent and Judy Nettz for dessert.

Ellen and Justin Rahn hosted the holiday meal for their family.

Joining in the get-together were Ellen’s parents, Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins, and her siblings, Deb and Phil Ohlwine, Mike and Rena Hopkins, John and Susan Hopkins, and their children and grandchildren.

I was invited to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with Jo’s family.

Hosted by Pat and Roger Garrison, we enjoyed a wonderful potluck meal with several extended family members.

After dinner, Tristan Bushman, who was home from Nashville entertained us with a couple of his new songs.

In the afternoon, I returned home and called Stephanie. She was sick with the flu and was not able to see anyone for several days.

Luckily, she was well enough to attend her birthday party with friends on Saturday night. I still remember the day she was born like it was yesterday.

Before I had kids, I never considered how special my birthday was to my own mom.

It was the day she became a parent. My brother’s birthday was just as important to her.

Each year as we celebrated getting another year older, we also celebrated her special day, too.

Now, when my kids have a birthday, I also remind them of how special the day is for me.

I usually commemorate the occasion by retelling the story about the day they were born.

Now that they have entered adulthood, my stories probably aren’t very exciting.

I imagine our Father in heaven celebrates the same way. He knows the circumstances that brought us to the earth.

He understands our thoughts, fears, concerns, and victories.

Because He knows us so well, we are very important to Him. We can turn to the one who has known us for our entire life. He loves and cares for each one of us.

When we celebrate our birthday here on earth, it is a special day in heaven, too.

I hope to see you next week in our church as we start the Advent season.

Come and celebrate this special time of year with our family.

“The Songs of Christmas” is this year’s theme for the Advent series at the Evangelical Free Church of Mt. Morris, 102 S. Seminary Ave. Music, and especially beloved, Christmas carols, are a poignant and significant part of the Christmas experience.

The following is a short summary of the three books that I donated to the Mt. Morris Public Library in the last couple of months.

To get a better understanding of any person you should know as much as you can about them.

To accomplish this, you can listen as they discuss what is happening that day and how they are taking care of it.

The second way is to tune in to the TV news. I choose CNN as they report the news as it happens during the day.

In the evening, you get “hosts” who may bring in a panel of politicians (Democrats, Republicans, and Inde-

pendents) to get their viewpoints.

The panels may also be a general in the military, a national security advisor, a scientist, or a person such as John Dean from the Nixon era. The conversation is very lively.

The third way is to read about that person by people involved, or by people invited to witness the inner workings and then write a book.

As I write this, I just read that Jeff Sessions resigned as Attorney General. That will be another book, I’m sure.

“Fire and Fury” by Mike Wolfe opens up the opportunity window as people on the campaign staff maneuver to put themselves in the best light so they can be appointed by the President to be part of his staff.

I found this book very enlightening as it goes deep into their thought process.

Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 58,836 deer during the first weekend of the Illinois Firearm Deer Season on Nov. 16-18.

Hunters took 51,450 deer during the first firearm weekend in 2017.

Illinois’ seven-day Firearm Deer Season will conclude Nov. 29 through Dec. 2.

Other deer hunting opportunities in the weeks ahead include: • Muzzleloader-Only Deer Season on Dec. 7-9.

• Late-Winter Antlerless-Only and CWD Deer Seasons (in select counties only) on Dec. 27-30, 2018 and Jan. 18-20, 2019.

• Archery Deer Season continues through Jan. 20, 2019 (archery deer hunting is closed Nov. 29-Dec. 2 in counties open for Firearm Deer Season).

The eighth grade teams competed first.

DLR started strong, answering five out of the first ten ‘toss-up’ questions correctly. The Eagles had the lead at the break, 95-25.

The difficulty of the questions increased in the second half and only Forreston responded correctly on two out of the final ten. DLR’s early lead was enough to claim the 95-60 win.

The seventh grade Eagles dominated their portion of meet from start to finish. Abigail Fletcher was quick to the buzzer and led the team with eight correct ‘toss-up’ responses in Spanish, science, politics, astronomy, presidents and history.

Alyssa Leary added a Disney question and Elijah George a music answer. The Eagles won, 240-20.

friends meet. The seventh graders competed first.

The parents jumped out to a quick lead, answering four out of the first five ‘tossup’ questions. The seventh graders came right back, answering four of their own. The parents held a slight advantage at the midpoint, 135-80.

That was as close as the students would come as the adults dominated the second half. The victory went to the parents, 335105.

Fletcher again paced the Eagles with three correct answers and Owen Flanagan added

two.

In the eighth grade match, it was the students who took the early lead. The parents, however, came right back and held a close, 140-65, lead at the break.

In the second half, the parents answered seven out of the final ten ‘toss-up’ questions right to win the meet, 115-280.

Ethan Schafer, Davis, Valerie Nyderek, Grace Tomlinson and Fox each had a correct response for DLR. “A big Thank You to everyone who participated in our parent’s meet!,” said coach Gretchen Nelson.

No stopping the Cardinals in 1A state title run Cardinals beat Camp Point Central 44-6

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com From the first play of the 1A state title football game, there where no stopping Forreston’s offense. In a 44-6 thumping of Camp Point Central, the Cardinals made it three state titles in five years.

“These group of seniors did more than you could ask for,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said. People doubted them and they overcame a lot of adversity. It’s truly credit to them.”

It was Evan Kelsey getting Forreston (12-2) going early with 22 and 37-yard touchdowns for a 14-0 lead.

Kelsey would have 123 first-half rushing yards, as Forreston took a 30-0 lead.

“With the holes the offensive line were making, I was very confident,” said Kelsey, whose team had 242 yards in the first half on the ground.

For good measure, Kelsey broke up a third-down pass play, after CPC (12-2) drove into the red zone on its first possession. A fourth-down try also fell incomplete and the Panthers’ only serious scoring threat (16 plays) went for naught.

CPC had gotten to 5-yard line, but a costly 15-yard penalty nullified that play.

Taking over at the 21-yard line, it was Kelsey for 16 yards, Garett Badertscher for 11 and the Panther defense continued to reel until Kelsey scored five plays later.

CPC, which converted two fourthdown conversions on the previous drive, were not able to do the same on a second drive that stalled at midfield. Derek DeVries tossed Chayse Houston for a 4-yard loss on fourth down and Forreston got the ball back 45 yard from the end zone.

With quarterback Bailey Cullor methodically marching the Cardinals downfield, it was fullback Ethan Mulder crashing over from one yard after eight plays for the 22-0 lead.

“It was our smoothest game of the year, especially when we don’t have to pass,” said Cullor , one of nine junior position-starters on both sides of the ball.

The ensuing kickoff by Sawyer Wild pinned CPC at their 11-yard line and things would only get worse for the Panthers.

Within six plays, Forreston would intercept CPC quarterback Eric Jones twice. First, it was DB Hunter Rogers with a 27-yard pick-6 and 30-0 lead. His defensive mate on the other side of the field, Kelsey, got the second one.

“On Hunter’s pick, you could see the energy leaving them,” all-state lineman Mitchell Heinz said.

Forreston continued the pressure on CPC’s first drive of the second half. Derreck Vince tackled Noah Strohkirch for a 3-yard loss and two incompletions led to a 3-and-out.

CPC’s first punt of the game resulted in Forreston finding the end zone 11 plays later, with Mulder doing honors on a 8-yard run.

Early in the fourth quarter, it was Badertscher’s 23rd career touchdown making it a running clock at 44-0.

Since 2005, the NUIC has gone 11-1 in championship games and Forreston’s win made it 20 state title for current league members.

“I’m friends with Denny Diduch and coach Arand and know what brand of football is played up there,” CPC coach Brad Dixon. “We were physically outmatched. Ten times out of ten, they beat us.”

His players had similar thoughts.

“We haven’t been hit in the mouth like that since maybe Beardstown

His son had reached the state title game in his first year as head coach.

“Kyle’s in a great spot at Forreston,” Zick said. “Denny (Diduch) has been a great mentor and the community supports its sports. I’m proud

of both my sons (Brett is defensive coordinator at Rochelle).”

Diduch was in the east stands with the large contingent of Cardinal fans watching the 10 a.m. contest, the first of eight games throughout the weekend at the University of Illinois.

“Forreston did what they wanted to out there. They put on a clin-

(42-24 loss),” said 300-pound lineman Kollen Hughes. “We didn’t answer the bell. That fullback (Badertscher) is a man.”

Badertscher had 96 yards rushing, part of the 404 put up by the Cardinals in the fast-moving game.

Mulder added 82 and last week’s hero, Dom Christensen, another 41.

“When push came to shove, they won the battles,” Strohkirch said.

Defensively, Rogers led the Cardinals with five tackles, Christensen had five and Mulder and Cailean Davids three each.

Playing in the West Central conference, the same league as Carrollton who Forreston beat in 2014, CPC came in averaging nearly 40 points

a game and 435 yards total offense.

They were held to 226 yards, much of which came on a final 72-yard scoring drive, keyed by a nifty 47-yard pass from Jones to Houston.

For the Cardinals, the state title was a redemption of sort after starting 2-2 and doubts being raised on their ability to contend for a state title.

“We took bounds throughout the season,” Rogers said. “It was a completely different team than week one.”

Forreston, which suffered decisive defeats to Lena-Winslow and EPC in the regular season, began to come together before the Aquin game.

“Right before, we had a players only meeting,” Rogers said. “We go we needed off our chest. There were a lot of off-field issues that needed to be taken care.”

The Cardinals came into Memorial Stadium after a tough 3-week playoff stretch against NUIC foes, Milledgeville, Dakota and Le-Win. “Yes, to run the NUIC gauntlet like that helps,” Zick said. “People said we had a bad game against Milledgeville, but they are a damn good team. They surprised us. Dakota came in hungry and that was a great game and everyone knows how good Le-Win is.”

It was compliments abounding for the Forreston football team during the 44-6 dismantling of a physically outmatched Camp Point Central team.

This from IHSA TV commentator Tim O’Halloran: “They are so disciplined and wellcoached, especially the line with the leverage and speed” said O’Halloran, who also runs the popular high-school football website EdgyTim. “Forreston plays smash-mouth football and I love it. They came in so battle-tested from their conference. You could tell the difference between them and Camp Point.”

“Forreston plays incredible football,” said IHSA staffer Matt Troha. “I think we all thought LenaWinslow was going to be here again, but Forreston demonstrated how good football is in that part of the state.”

Jason Kirby, formerly at Bureau Valley and now coach at West Central (Biggsville) had this to stay.

“They showed how physical of a road they had to go on to get here,” Kirby said. “To do that was very impressive and No. 32 (Garett Badertscher) is a beast.”

Standing alongside the Forreston sideline with Kirby was buddy Scott Hamilton of Tolono Unity.

“They have so many different weapons and balanced inside and out,” said Kirby, who coached in five championship games. “For a wing-T team, they go fast and keep the other team off guard. Their skill kids do a great job. Defensively, I like how well the three guys in the secondary can stay back and control the edge.”

Hunter Rogers remembers sitting in the stands five years ago as an eighth grader and watching the 2014 team win.

“I remember watching that team and saying I want to be on this field,” said Rogers, whose older brother Logan was a junior then.

Rogers and Mitchell Heinz, who was clutching the state trophy, took a moment to look down from the eighth floor of the Memorial Stadium pressbox. It was the same place Rob DeVries also took a moment to reflect in wonderment at the field far below after leading the Cardinals to the 2014 title.

“Getting the first state title is tough,” coach Kyle Zick said. “I saw a couple of the players from the 2014 team in the stands and told them they started it for us.”

Superintendent Sheri Smith was only too happy to sacrifice the family meal on Thanksgiving to support the Cardinals.

“It’s getting to be a tradition for us to eat at Steak ‘n Shake on Thursday,” said Smith, who arrived Thursday to welcome the team to Champaign. “This never gets old.

I’m excited for coach Zick.”

After weeks of telling reporters like me that the 2018 version of Forreston football was continuing to get better, the results finally came to fruition by being one of only eight teams out of 565 in Illinois that left Champaign with a first-place trophy.

“It took awhile, but this is a damn good team,” Zick said.

Hawks looking to bolster wins with junior class

“Everyone knows how good the Big Northern is,” said Virgil, mentioning Rock Falls, Byron, Winnebago, Lutheran, and Dixon as the top tier. “Don’t forget about Rockford Christian, who won our tournament.”

Last year, Oregon was 1-9 in the conference. Virgil realizes his team isn’t with the upper echelon yet, but no longer cellar dwellers.

“This year, I’d like to compete with them instead of having the game over at half like the last couple of years,’ Virgil said. “We need to beat the teams we should and if everything goes well and we stay

healthy, we could be .500 (regular season).”

Like he did last year as a sophomore, it will be Trey Woolsey (6-4) leading the team. He’s particularly noted for bringing the crowd to its feet with his dunks.

“He’s done a lot of work in the off season and has gotten stronger,” Virgil said. “He’s an excitement type of a player. If he gets in a groove, he’s scores a lot of points. His main job is to score points for us and get to the rim.”

Hermes is the most reliable player and the most physical.

“Dalton (6-1) might be our most

valuable player because of his ability to go inside and outside and how strong he is,” Virgil said. “Our other senior, Jackson (5-10), can get on hot streaks with his outside shooting.”

Ryker Finch (6-2) gives the team a quarterback mentality and athleticism around the rim. Another relative newcomer to basketball is Josh Sitze (6-4), who return to the court after taking last year off.

“I like how Josh plays. He’s an energy guy who’s not afraid to dive for balls,” Virgil said. “He’s learning a new spot at the post, but is athletic enough to defend guards.”

Another junior with a load of potential is Riley Birnbaum (6-3). He is still learning how good he can be, but has shown flashes with the way he moves on the court.

“Riley is long, quick and skilled,” Virgil said. “He can do a lot on the court –handling the ball and shooting. On defense, he can get in lanes and steal passes.”

Eli Rufer (6-1) will be seeing plenty of time off the bench. According to Virgil, he plays hard and listens well.

The Hawks have one sophomore in Gatlin Good (5-10). Gatlin saw plenty of time as a freshman on varsity, “Gatlin is super athletic and can slither into spots,” Virgil said. “With the new jayvee rule, we may also use him down there.”

In all varsity events other than football, the BNC now allows jayvee competition instead of strictly freshsoph.

“It can be anyone not getting playing time on the varsity, from a senior on down,” explained Virgil. “I’ve been pro for it a long time. That’s how they do it in southern Illinois.”

A new addition to the team is junior Noah Campos, a transfer from Rockford Guilford. With his performance at the tournament, it’s evident that Campos will be bringing a much-desired calming effect to the team.

“Noah has a huge basketball IQ and picks up stuff really quick,” Virgil said. “He knows how to push the ball up the court off the pass and makes good decisions.”

However, a string of eight turnovers in nine possessions saw Newman take a 25-15 lead.

Dalton Hermes briefly gave Oregon a spark with five quick points on a

3-pointer and layup off a steal. Before the first half ended, 3s by Woolsey and Hermes closed the gap to 38-32.

But that was as close as the Hawks would get, as Josh Payan sank a 3-point shot at the buzzer.

With little bulk and no one over 6-foot-4, Oregon had no answer inside

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com With only two seniors in the Oregon basketball program, coach Quinn Virgil admittedly is looking at his juniors and the potential they bring. “”You don’t like to look at classes differently, but you do,” the 11th-year mentor said. “We’ve had our eyes on this group of juniors since they were in eighth grade.”

With obvious reason. After the 21-9 team of three years ago graduated, Virgil knew Hawk basketball would be in a dry spell for a while.

After records of 6-24 and 8-22 the last two years and only current seniors Jackson Buck and Dalton Hermes sticking with the program, Virgil desperately needed something to bolster the varsity team.

“Dalton and Jackson are good kids and accept the underclassmen,” Virgil said.

With a predominantly junior roster, there will be plenty of growing pains, as was evidenced in last week’s Thanksgiving tournament, in which the Hawks went 2-22.

“Being so young, we’re still figuring out the roles,” Virgil said. “What I like is how hard we are playing.

They listen well, too.”

Besides the lack of talent, that was something missing the last couple of years.

With a rebirth of the program and a gentler schedule than in the past, winning around 15 games is a reasonable goal. A big plus is only playing BNC teams once instead of twice.

That has freed Oregon up to schedule non-conference foes like AFC, Harvard, Forreston, Warren and West Carroll. For the first time, the Hawks will be at the Freeport Aquin Shootout and return to the South Beloit MLK tourney for the second year. The toughest non-conference opponent looks to be Polo on December 13.

Right after the Polo game, it’s the prestigious Forreston Holiday Tournament, one of the longest running in the state at nearly 50 years. By then, the Hawks will also have a couple conference games in.

Sages ruin Tigers’ perfect season

“Those fourth-down stops were killers,” Snodgrass said.

Still, Byron looked to be in good shape after Blake Eder had a 9-yard sack on all-state QB Braden Snyder.

But, Snyder came right back and hit Alek Bundy with a screen pass at the 5-yard line. Bundy was sprung free by a crunching block and another downfield block by Bradd to go 95 yards for a touchdown and 7-0 Sages lead. That was a 3A title game record for longest touchdown and turned the game around for Monticello.

“In the first half, I thought our defense played great except for one

play,” Boyer said.

Linebacker Kevin Claunch, who saved the game last year with Monticello, led the defense with seven tackles and Colton Ingram had six.

The run-happy Tigers then went to the air to set up their first score.

Ben Carlson found Zak Alberts for a 29-yard pass. Then Snodgrass knocked off a 19-yard run. An Isaac Stickler 14-yard touchdown run capped off the 6-play, 83-yard drive, reminiscent of many Tiger scoring possessions.

With the score tied 7-7, a 45-pass from Snyder to Bradd gave the Sages a first-and-goal. Claunch forced a field goal with a tackle for a loss on a reverse.

Luke Rudolph kicked a 28-yard

field goal that clanked off the upright and straight down for a 10-7 Sages halftime lead. It was the first time all year Byron trailed at half and the fortuitous bounce the field goal took was another break that Monticello seem to get.

“We stalled on drives. That can’t happen,” Boyer said. “That and too many mistakes cost us the game.”

Kicker Aydin Lambert recovered a fumble after long return by Bundy at the start of the second half and Byron went on a 50-yard drive to take the lead at 14-10. It was Messling scoring from five yards out after eight straight runs.

The Byron and Monticello 3A state title football game between undefeated No. 1 seeds was exactly as advertised.

In the end, it was defensive stops by the Sages making the difference in a 24-20 win on Nov. 23 in Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois in Champaign.

“It was a clash of styles and they won,” Byron coach Jeff Boyer said.

“We didn’t finish and that cost us.”

Four times, the Monticello defense did something no one else has much success - make fourth down stops against the powerful Byron offense.

“The critical times, we made the plays,” Monticello coach Cully Welter said.

Monticello came back from a 14-10 second half deficit to win its first-ever state title and also avenge a 21-20 playoff lost last year to Byron.

“It’s amazing to beat our rival,” receiver Asher Bradd said. “I’d rather lose to them last year and win when it counted most this time.”

Byron had the edge early, moving into the red zone twice in the first half. However, they came up empty-handed both times.

After an 11-play drive, a fourthdown pass from Ben Carlson to Drake Snodgrass was initially caught in the end zone, but ruled incomplete as he lost possession.

“I thought I had it, but they knocked it loose,” Snodgrass said.

Similarities, differences at state football finals O

ffensively and defensively, Byron and Forreston were very similar football teams.

What was different was the path taken to get to the state title game and the final outcome.

Forreston’s real test began in the second round at Milledgeville and didn’t end until it stopped LenaWinslow on fourth down at midfield with two minutes left in the semifinals.

Those two games, along with defeating Dakota at home were like playing three state title games. What took place at Champaign against Camp Point Central was a mere formality, as evidenced by the 44-6 score.

Byron had a cakewalk until it met Monticello in the finals. Now, it was time to put on the hard hat, steel-toed boots and overalls and get to works after four weeks of light lifting.

That’s the nature of the IHSA state football playoffs.

Last year, Byron had that same 3-week stretch of heavyweights that Forreston had this year. It was the exact opposite this year for the Tigers.

Teams that haven’t been tested have a tendency to get tight when a

game is close. Another factor is that players accustomed to sitting out the second half all year because of a running clocks, aren’t conditioned to be on the field the full 48 minutes.

The biggest concern is not being mentally ready when an actual battle finally does happen.

Those aren’t theories, but what coaches have told me over the years, going back to Jim Scott of Sterling in describing his 1972 powerhouse team that ran all over everyone until it met a comparable team in the last game of the season.

According to Scott, though they were likely better than their opponent, not playing full games the rest of the year hurt them and they ended up losing.

For fans that think a team is running the score up, there is a valid reason for it. Scott regretted not giving his starters more playing time.

two teams. The difference was that Monticello had athletes and Byron was team-oriented.

Byron was in control, but Monticello kids would rise up and make game-changing plays.

They also had a Hall-of-Fame coach in Cully Welter who figured out a way to make fourth-down stops. With a running game as powerful as Byron’s, a team needs to take gambles on defense and the ones he made paid off.

Coaches don’t win or lose games.

Byron’s staff is outstanding in its own right. A kid like Alek Bundy for Monticello wins games, as exhibited by his 95-screen pass touchdown.

Up until then, Byron was having its way with the Sages, but one play changed everything and credit to the two beautiful blocks that sprung Bundy on the unlikely trip to paydirt.

How about that interception he made on the halfback option pass at the end of the game?

Though Boyer took a little heat from the media in the press conference over the call, I loved his decision.

Monticello had 10 players at the line of scrimmage. They had to or Byron would pound the ball down-

field like they’ve done to every other opponent.

Bundy was left back to patrol the entire secondary. Besides being athletic, he’s got the rare gift of intuition.

The halfback option was well executed, the throw was on target and if Bundy doesn’t read it and make the play, it is a touchdown. Game over and Byron wins.

As a football fan, I thoroughly enjoyed watching Byron and Monticello go at it. And, shouldn’t bringing a second-place trophy back home be enough?

Getting to the finals and playing in front of the rest of the state is the real reward.

Look for Byron and Forreston to have good teams again next year, as evidenced by the large number of juniors playing key roles.

Over the last couple years of covering Forreston, the most difficult task for me was remembering how to spell Garett Badertscher’s last name and Cailean Davids’ first name.

Finally, after they have wrapped up their senior season, I’ve got them memorized.

Byron put together another decent drive, but Messling was stacked up by the middle of the Sage line for no gain on fourth-and-inches at the 25.

“We knew we were outsized,” said 205-pound DE Riley Austin, like Bundy, a 4-year varsity player. “We had to show them we could play with them.”

The Sages increased its lead to 24-14 on a 3-yard run by Bundy on a wide-open sweep with Byron defense sucked in from the perimeter. The key play was a brilliant sideline grab by Bradd for 22 yards.

“We may have been a little tight.

We’re not used to being in those situations (trailing),” Boyer said.

With eight minutes left in the game, Byron closed to 24-20 on a Messling 1-yard run. Alberts made it possible with a 42-yard kickoff return.

“I thought we ran the ball well,” Boyer said.

The Tigers had an impressive 307 yards rushing, but only averaged 4.3 yards a carry, about half of what they usually do.

Byron had two more scoring opportunities with good field position, but were denied both times.

Welter gambled by stacking everybody but Bundy at the line of scrimmage to stop the powerful Tiger ground game and it worked both times.

On the second stop, Boyer called a halfback-option pass from Stickler to Snodgrass, but the 4-year starter Bundy made an athletic interception while nearly climbing up the back of Snodgrass.

Deputies issued 122 citations during Thanksgiving week The Ogle County Sheriff’s Department conducted traffic enforcement from Nov. 16–26, reminding motorists to buckle up and not drive impaired, day or night, as part of the nationwide Click It or Ticket/Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort.

The sheriff’s department joined other state and local law enforcement agencies across Illinois to reduce highway deaths by issuing citations to unbuckled motorists and arresting impaired drivers.

During the 10-day mobilization, deputies issued 122 citations including: • 51 speeding citations

• 11 uninsured motorists • 8 drug arrests • 7 seat belt citations • 6 suspended/revoked license arrests • 6 distracted driving (cell phone) citations • 3 DUI arrests • 1 felony arrest • 30 traffic offense citations (no turn signal, expired registration, etc) As a part of the enforcement period, deputies logged 28 hours of additional traffic patrol which was funded by a grant received from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Of the above citations, 28 citations were issued

during the extra patrol time.

The annual campaign may be over in Ogle County, but that isn’t an excuse to stop buckling up.

“Not wearing your seat belt is a primary offense, meaning law enforcement can stop you and issue a citation for that alone,” said Sheriff Brian VanVickle. “All vehicle occupants, regardless of seating position, are required to wear a properly adjusted seat belt.”

The Click It or Ticket/Drive Sober or Get Pulled Overenforcement effort is funded with federal highway safety funds administered by IDOT.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Nov. 19 Clay W. Jungerman, 21, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 8:14 p.m. for speeding, 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of Adams Street.

Christopher J. Shank, 52, of Byron, was issued a citation at 9:16 p.m. for disobeying a stop sign. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of Jefferson Street.

Nov. 20 Thomas D. Leigh, 29, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 3:04 p.m. for driving while license suspended. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of Jefferson Street.

Nov. 21 Emily M. Quaco, 21, of Dixon, was arrested at 11:25 a.m. for driving while license suspended. Quaco was also issued citations for defective windshield, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and operating a motor vehicle when registration suspended for non-insurance.

Quaco was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 200 block of South Fourth Street.

Joshua A. Nance, 36, of Rochelle, was arrested at 3:42 p.m. on an outstanding Boone County warrant for aggravated battery for leaving the scene. Nance was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 22 At 1:22 a.m., police investigated a car vs pedestrian traffic crash in the 1500 block of West Washington involving a pedestrian, Dustin D. Cole, 34, of Mon-

roe Center, who was struck by a 2011 Ford driven by Joseph T. Ring, 24, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

Nov. 24 At approximately 5:25 p.m., police were advised of a residential burglary that had just occurred in the 200 block of West Washington Street. MARION “GENE” E. HAZLIP Marion “Gene” E. Hazlip, 79, of Oregon (formerly of Polo), died on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2018, at his home.

Gene was born on July 28, 1939, in Jefferson Township, Illinois, the son of Walter and Cleona (Boatwright) Hazlip.

He married Donna Feary on Oct. 28, 1967 in Haldane.

Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Germany as a radar operator.

He then went on to work for Keefer Farms in Polo for more than 30 years and Nordman Feedlot for 13 years.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Nov. 19 Daniel Moreno, 27, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Moreno’s full cash bond was set at $787 pending a court appearance.

Nov. 20 At 5:45 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 4000 block of Mud Creek Road on a 1995 Honda Civic for not having brake lights. After a short investigation, Tanis O’Brien,18, of Dixon, was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license and cited for no brake lights. O’Brien was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Nov. 21 Ernest D. Elswick, 51, of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for a probation violation.

Elswick posted the $15,000 (10%) bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 19.

Patrick J. Beavers, 26, o Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for a violation of bond. Beavers was released after time served.

Nov. 22 At 2 p.m., deputies, along with the Lynn-Scott-Rock Ambulance, responded to 113 Autumnwood Lane in Davis Junction for a report of two males fighting in the front yard.

Deputies learned that the homeowner had called 911 to report that there were two males fighting in her yard and she did not know who they were.

Deputies then identified the males as Andres M. Varga, 58, of North Aurora, and William J. Werrline IV,45, of North Aurora.

The investigation determined that Varga and Werrline had gotten into a fight near by the residence while driving in the area and were walking through the resident’s yard creating a disturbance when 911 was called.

Deputies determined that Werrline had bitten Varga in the facial area several times while they were fighting.

Varga was transported to Swedish American Hospital by the Ambulance for treatment of injuries sustained in the incident.

Werrline was subsequently arrested for battery and was taken into custody without incident. He was transported

to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

At approximately 11:23 a.m., deputies performed a traffic stop in the 10,000 block of North Illinois 26.

After an investigation, Joseph Lewis, 44, of Beloit, Wisconsin, was arrested on a Lee County contempt of court warrant and driving while license suspended. Lewis was transported to the Ogle county Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Nov. 23 Charles Williams, 50, of Franklin Grove, was arrested at 5:19 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 4,000 block of Illinois 2. Williams also received citations for improper use of registration, no seat belt, and no insurance. He was held at the Ogle County Jail in lieu of bond.

Nov. 24 Gary Barney, 53, of Leaf River, was arrested at 8:08 p.m. for driving while license revoked following a traffic stop in the 4,000 block of Illinois 2. Barney also received citations for not having insurance, one head lamp, loud muffler, possession of cannabis and drug equipment. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

At 10:53 p.m., deputies along with the Byron police and fire departments, responded to the 9,000 block of North Twin Oaks drive for A one-vehicle accident. It was learned that Stanton Lewis, 23, of Byron, was northbound when he lost control of his motorcycle and came to rest in the center of the roadway.

Lewis was transported to a Rockford hospital for minor injuries. He was charged with driving while under the influence and released on an I-Bond.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 20. The crash remains under investigation.

Nov. 25 At 12:56 a.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on I-39 near Creston Road for a headlight violation.

During the course of the traffic stop it was learned that the driver, Ignacio Gonzalez Cantu, 36, of Mounds View, Minnesota, was driving on a revoked license. He was subsequently arrested for driving while license revoked.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he remained in lieu of bond.

Jerry E. Cross, 74, of Polo, died on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018 at CGH Medical Center, Sterling.

He was born on Jan. 22, 1944 in Eldora, Iowa, the son of Eugene A. Cross and Alice M. (Alexander) Stressman.

He married Flora Draper on June 10, 1967 in Rockford.

Jerry worked in Rockford at Bergstroms as a fabricator for years.

He was a member of the Church of the Open Bible in Polo.

Jerry had a love for the Lord, family, and traveling. He would put others before himself and never met a stranger.
