County board tables action on solar farms Attorney says new rules are “legal land mines”

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Board tabled a resolution Tuesday to repeal a moratorium on solar farms.

Board chairman Kim Gouker, of Byron, recommended that the moratorium approved last August remain in place until the board has adequate time to review a new set of recommendations governing solar farms.

“The moratorium needs to stay in place until the recommendations are accepted,” he said.

Before tabling the repeal, the board tabled the newly drawn up recommen-

dations.

Gouker told the board and the audience of around 50 people that the Planning & Zoning Committee held a special three-hour meeting that afternoon to make its recommendation on the rules for solar farms drawn up by an adhoc committee formed in September for that purpose.

The Planning & Zoning Committee recommended the new regulations to the county’s Zoning Code to the county board, which has the final say.

Gouker said Zoning Administrator Mike Reibel was making the final changes to the recommendations and would bring copies to the meeting as soon as possible.

However, he said that would not give board members adequate time to review them and make its decision Tuesday evening.

Several applications in recent months for special use permits for solar farms have drawn opposition from neighbors, especially near Stillman Valley.

Although the board had already approved three solar farms, it declared the moratorium on Aug. 21 to allow time to draw up regulations to govern them for the zoning code.

IASB votes no to arming school staff A proposed resolution calling for the Illinois Association of School Boards to support legislation that would provide local school boards the option to decide if they will allow for properly trained staff to be armed in school buildings as part of the district’s overall student safety and protection plans was not adopted by the IASB Delegate Assembly when it met last week.

The vote tally was 179 in favor of the adoption of the resolution, 203 against.

Districts opposing the measure opined that arming staff would not create a safer environment for their students.

The intent of the proposed resolution was to give local school districts the authority to decide what is best for their communities in the areas of school safety and student protection.

The proposed referendum, which will affect only City of Oregon taxpayers, will pay for the city’s share of the ongoing costs after the initial start-up period.

Williams said the referendum will ask for just over two cents per $100 equalized assessed valuation, which translates into $20.67 per year on a house valued at $100,000.

That will bring in an estimated $29,000 per year, he said.

Mahoney said the SRO will be on duty at the high school at first, and will spend time at the other school buildings as the plan is developed.

Williams said the city council is working out the details on how to proceed if the referendum fails in April.

If that happens and Oregon is unable to provide the SRO, Mahoney said the school district could look to another police agency, such as the Mt. Morris Police Department or the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department.

Statutes require that an SRO must be a full-time police officer, he said.

Christmas concert will benefit local food pantries Performers from all over area featured The public is invited to a free community Christmas concert that will celebrate the holidays and support local food pantries.

“The Winter Rose,” by Joseph and Pamela Martin, will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 308 E. Brayton Rd., Mt. Morris.

Since its inception in 2004, the concert has been offered free to the public, with monetary donations given to local charities.

For the 12th year, the beneficiaries will be food pantries Loaves and Fish in Mt. Morris and Lifeline in Oregon, which have each received, on average, about $500 each year since 2010.

Musicians from communities throughout northwest Illinois, including Ashton, Byron, Davis Junction, Dixon, Forreston, Freeport, Leaf River, Mt. Morris, Ore-

gon, Polo, Rochelle, Rockford and Winnebago, have gathered weekly since mid-October to rehearse for the single annual performance.

For many, it’s become a Christmas tradition — a way to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ while benefiting needy people in local communities.

The public is encouraged to arrive by 2:45 p.m. for pre-concert performances by Bryan Gagliano on organ, harpist Kit Reynolds, and Andy Eckardt directing a brass group.

A special number will be performed by violinist Jennie Saltzgiver during the intermission.

This year’s concert will be directed by Dr. Matthew Guschl.

He has a doctor of musical arts degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a master’s degree in oboe performance and literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Guschl is the program coordinator at Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center.

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A Mt. Morris resident got disappointing news Nov. 13 when the village board denied his request to pay for damage to his home caused by a tree limb.

Village president Dan Elsasser said the board rejected Joseph Leber’s request, based on advice from both its

attorney and an insurance company representative.

“The general consensus was that it was an act of God, so the motion to pay was denied,” he said.

Elsasser said strong winds blew a limb from a tree on the village terrace onto the electrical service running into Leber’s home at 108 S. Reynolds Ave., pulling the wires down.

The damage was less than $250,

Elsasser said, and should be covered

by Leber’s homeowner’s insurance policy.

In other business, the board rejected a motion to approve a quote for $16,000 from Culy Contractors, of Winchester, Indiana, to line several manholes.

Elsasser said the board wanted clarification on some wording in the company’s contract.

Christmas light show synced to music begins Nov. 24 The light show is in sync to Christmas music.

Approximately 50,000 lights will come alive with the music that evening entertaining all who attend the public event which kicks off at 5 pm.

The streets around the home will be partially blocked off so people

may wander around and take in the view from a distance somewhat like a large screen.

Santa will be there to greet the kids in a real sleigh, and a North Pole Express mail box for letters to Santa will be available as well.

“The recommendations are a good start, but we’re not there yet,” said Meyers, who is also a county board member.

Polo police officer is credited with saving a life Tim Rockwood ran in front of train to stop a suicide

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A Polo police officer received a commendation from the city council Monday evening for risking his own life to save another person’s earlier this month.

Officer Tim Rockwood, 39, got a standing ovation from the Polo City Council and the audience at the council meeting after Mayor Doug Knapp presented him with a certificate of recognition.

Police Chief Kurt Cavanaugh read a letter from the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department describing and praising Rockwood’s actions on the evening of Nov. 11 when he saved the life of a person who was planning to commit suicide by stepping in front of a train.

After hearing a 911 call about the person’s imminent plan, Rockwood immediately drove to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad crossing nearest to the person’s home on Freeport Road.

When he arrived there he saw a train only 30 to 40 yards east of the crossing and also saw the person on about 15 feet on the other side of the tracks, hurrying toward them.

With deputies enroute, Rockwood advised them of the situation and took action.

Despite the “great danger” the letter read, he crossed the tracks in front of the train and prevented the person from carrying out the suicide plan.

Cavanaugh also had high praise for Rockwood.

“Officer Rockwood willingly placed himself in a dangerous situation to protect and save the life of

Even though we know the really cold weather is on its way, the snow on the trees is quite beautiful.

At this season of thankfulness, we thank Him for blessings including His comfort during the storm. God is good.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Don and Vicki Hay. Our service was a special celebration of our farming neighbors and the gathering of the harvest.

Our guests were treated to stories and music provided by Green Ridge Musical Kapers.

The barbershop group made up of Ken Toms, Mark Styczynski, Rex Wingert, and Paul McCracken, also performed after the meal that was served in the basement.

Everyone who attended the service enjoyed a wonderful catered meal by the Lessman family. Everyone enjoyed the delicious meal and kind fellowship that followed.

With full pews and over 60 community and family members, Pine Creek celebrated the blessings of the harvest and the blessings of neighbors and friendship.

Each family received a jar with activities for Advent.

Rev. Charlotte Hoppe has prepared a sermon series centered around “Silent Night.”

This past Tuesday evening, I joined the worship committee for our regular meeting.

“The City of Polo is fortunate to have such a quality individual as Officer Rockwood to be part of the police department and the community.”

We had a night of brainstorming and sharing ideas for the Christmas season and into next year.

Our small congregation continues to dream big.

The Polo Council of Churches continues to host the Our Table Community Meal.

The free meal is for anyone and is held at Faith United Methodist Church on the last Monday of the month. The next meal is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 26.

This past Saturday, Charlotte and I headed out early for a day of shopping at area craft shows.

We had the bonus of the beautiful trees dressed in snowy white for our scenery on the drive to Rock Falls, Ashton, and Rockford.

My mom and I always enjoyed going to look at craft shows. We also have many good memories of having our own booth at many of the local shows.

Now, Charlotte and I share of love

of everything homemade.

When making plans for the shopping day, we found several local shows on Facebook.

I was very excited for the show in Rockford. I followed many advertisements, imaging many unique crafters would be on display.

Surprisingly, we both decided our favorite craft show was in Ashton.

The smallest of the shows had the sweetness of the antiques and original ideas from the crafters.

The small space was a great place to shop.

It reminds me of our church.

Right now, we are a small family of worshipers.

We love each other and put our faith into practice and action.

Our space is simple and it has an at-home feel.

Rock River Center invites the public to a retirement open house honoring Ann Haas, executive director, on Friday, Dec. 7 from 1-3 p.m.

Haas began her career with the Yellowbird in August 1991. During her 28 years of service she has served as Volunteer Coordinator, Fund Developer, Assistant Director and Executive Director.

Throughout her years with the agency it has grown moving from the former location on Washington Street to the new facility at 810 South 10th Street in 2011 and having been renamed from Yellowbird to Ogle County Senior Services in 1986 and again to Rock River Center, Inc. in 2005.

Rock River Center provides seniors in Ogle County Transportation Services, Information and Assistance and a wide variety of programming and activities.

The Center is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

(All ages are welcome to participate in programming) Anderson to Speak Nov. 27 Dr. Carri Anderson, local chiropractic doctor, specializing in Natural Medicine, will return to Rock River Center on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 10:30 a.m.

Anderson’s program is in a casual format and her discussion will be followed by a question and answer period.

Matter of Balance Workshop The last session in the Matter of Balance Workshop Series will be on Wednesday, Nov. 28, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

This program helps people live life with less fear and stay active and independent.

“Timeless” Performs Dec. 12 A new duet “Timeless” featuring Denny Jacobs and Mike Bratt will be making a debut appearance at Rock River Center on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 10:30 a.m.

Jacobs, a regular on the “Pride of Oregon” Paddleboat. He enjoys performing at various local facilities as well. He will share a wide variety of guitar music and

has an easy listening voice. He is a solo regular at RRC, and never disappoints.

Mike Bratt, from Stillman Valley, has been performing for many years. He plays 6-string guitar and bass, and sing vocals. Currently, he is in two bands; Backroads Trio and Bluegrass Reunion Bands. His specialty is 50’s, 60’s and cowboy range music.

Zellers is Ogle County Fair Volunteer of the Year Directors are also re-elected to Ogle County Fair Board The Ogle County Fair Association recognized Nathan Zellers, of Oregon, as the 2018 “Volunteer of the Year” at its annual meeting Nov. 10.

This award is given in recognition of exceptional volunteer work.

Association President Harlan Holm said Zellers was always very willing to help where ever needed at this year’s fair.

The annual meeting is held each year at the Ogle County Fair Bureau Building to review the past year’s fair and elect new directors.

In his address, Holm said the fair was successful with an “excellent” turnout.

He added that volunteer labor provided by fair association members and directors, 4-H club and FFA members, and contributions from individuals and businesses all help make our Ogle County Fair a suc-

cess.

Holm expressed his thanks to 4-H leaders and volunteers and the all-volunteer fair board for their “dedication and hard work” to make the fair a success.

He said there were free shows and free carnival rides were offered again this year with paid gate admission.

“The free on grounds shows were very well attended and enjoyed by all,” he said.

Directors re-elected to three-year terms on the board were Brad Larsen and Michael “Butch” Timm, both of Mt. Morris. and Rosanne Donegan Hurst. of Byron.

Other continuing board members include Harlan Holm, Carol Magnuson, and Stan Eden, all of Oregon; Dave Engelbrecht, of Byron; Rita Dauphin and Lyle Hopkins, both of Polo; Tom Simpson, of Davis Junction; and Randy Anderson, of Chana.

Other Fair Officials include Dennis Alderks, of Chana, fair superintendent; Jon Sheely, of Oregon, assistant superintendent; and Dr. Tom Hughes, of Forreston, fair veterinarian.

SPECIAL EVENTS ENAG to host art show on Nov. 24 The Eagle’s Nest Art Group will hold an art show during Oregon’s Candlelight Walk on Saturday, Nov. 24 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the ENAG gallery on the second floor of Conover Square Mall, 201 N. Third St., Oregon.

No fee will be charged for the show. Parking is plentiful.

Many different forms of art will be on display, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, ceramics, photography, alcohol ink, pen and ink, calligraphy, three-dimensional art, prints, cards, and jewelry.

ENAG continues to support the Hands On Oregon projects through the sales of art work donated by members.

These selected art pieces are located in the entry area to the gallery.

Under the leadership of Commander Stan Ballard, this organization will continue to be an important organization for Mt. Morris today and in the future.

Moundertown.com began giving the donations three years ago by asking businesses in Mt. Morris to help support the site.

With the monies raised they “Pay it Forward” to a not-for-profit organization each year close to the Christmas season. The first donation in 2016 went to Loaves and Fish, the second in 2017 went to the Mt. Morris Senior Center, and now this year to the American Legion.

Diane Palmer and Linda Miller, who maintain the website, are two hometown girls who love their town and want to continue helping others.

As noted, they want to continue to help the not-for-profit organizations in the Mt. Morris community and have asked businesses to sponsor the website, but would also like to see individuals with a desire to help join in the sponsorships.

In the past, Mt. Morris School District 251’s slogan was “Once a Mounder, Always a Mounder.” Many of us still feel that way.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Moundertown donates to Mt. Morris American Legion Dear Editor, The Mt. Morris American Legion Post 143 was surprised during their annual membership dinner to receive a donation from Mt. Morris’s premier community events website – Moundertown. com.

The website, which will celebrate its fifth year in 2019, was designed to focus on the community and the many events and attractions that take place in our village, from upcoming events to class reunions, from fundraisers to garage sales, and much more, this website does it all.

The American Legion celebrates memberships in the club by hosting a dinner on Veterans Day. This brings fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives together to talk and reminisce of days gone by and what is happening today.

They celebrate by hosting a small auction of various desserts made by members or spouses.

The American Legion does so much for the community.

They visit veterans in nursing homes, repair eternal resting places of various veterans, support the local Let Freedom Ring festivities, and host the Memorial Day celebration on Memorial Day.

Jamboree says thanks for successful season

Signing with DePaul is “icing on cake” for Nelson Oregon High School Senior Bailey Nelson will continue her time on the volleyball court for DePaul University.

Nelson signed her letter of intent on Monday to attend the Division 1 program. She said she visited the Chicago school and felt it was the right fit for her.

“I’m excited. I liked the coaching staff and the school in general,” she said. “It’s definitely going to be a big change, but a lot of opportunities too. Volleyball is my ‘thing’ and this is icing on the cake. I got what I wanted.”

Andrew Nelson, Bailey’s father, thanked all her coaches throughout the years for helping her achieve her goal of signing with a D-1 school.

“I just want to thank all those people who helped her get to the point where she’s at,” he said. “And I want Bailey to be recognized because what we are doing right now is the result of tens of thousands of hours of practice and hundreds and hundreds of volleyball matches going back to when she was in fifth grade.”

Bailey thanked all her coaches for her success on the volleyball court.

Photo by Earleen Hinton “Oregon volleyball has always been a welcoming place for me and the coaching staff has always seen the best in every player and I think the way they viewed me as a player from freshman to senior year really helped me gain my confidence and gave me a lot of opportunities to

become the player that I am,” she said, Eric Schulze, of VC Rockford, Bailey’s club volleyball coach for the past 3 years, said the OHS senior should be proud of her accomplishments.

“This is an extremely elite thing

that you just accomplished,” said Schulze. “There are just less than one percent of the high school volleyball players in the United States have a chance to play Division 1 on scholarship. And that is an amazing accomplishment. You need to extremely proud of what you just accomplished.”

Schulze said DePaul competes in the Big East, under the direction of head coach Marie Zidek.

“The Big East is a big time volleyball conference and what Marie is building there is going to be really special and I think you are going to be part of something really special and you should be really proud of what you have accomplished,” he said to Bailey.

Nelson was a 4-year varsity starter for OHS and was named to the Big Northern Conference’s All Conference First Team in 2017 and 2018.

She helped Oregon become regional champions in 2017, was an AllState Honorable Mention in 2017, and also served as team captain in 2017 and 2018.

She plans on majoring in political science.

The Oregon Hawks boys bowling team traveled to Mendota on Nov 15 to take on the Trojans.

The Hawks had a rough night on the lanes, barely winning the match. Oregon had a 3,302 series to Mendota’s 3,293 series.

The Hawks were lead by Kyle Strite with a 620 series.

Strite was followed by Charlie Bachman with a 592 series, Jacob Smith with a 561 Series, Justin Poole with a 540 series, Austin Strite a 516 series, and Eddie Buttens with a 473 series.

The Hawks did improve to 3-0 on the season.

Mendota was lead by Luke Ross who had a high game of 277 and a 657 series.

Oregon 2-2 at tournament Oregon’s Lady Hawks won two games and lost two games at their own Tip Off Basketball Tournament.

Oregon 34, West Carroll 31 The Lady Hawks outscored the Thunder 13-4 in the final quarter to emerge victorious at the Blackhawk Center.

Olivia Lambrigsten scored a game-high 15 points for Oregon, including a 4-for-4 performance at the free-throw line. Hannah Donaldson chipped in eight points.

Amboy 44, Oregon 20 Abi Payne scored 14 points, Noelle Jones added 11, and Kyleigh Donna scored 10 for the Clippers in a win over the host Hawks in the semifinals.

Lambrigtsen led Oregon with seven points.

Amboy hit six 3-pointers, five of them in the first half, on its way to a 22-13 halftime lead. The Clippers outscored the Hawks 13-4 in the third quarter to pull away.

The Lady Hawks earned another close win, holding off the Steamers.

Lambrigsten scored a game-high 18 points for Oregon, while Ella Martin added nine.

The Lady Hawks fell in the thirdplace game of their own tournament after being outscored 12-4 in the first quarter and 15-9 in the second.

Lambrigsten led Oregon with eight points.

After missing his first two dunks, Trey Woolsey of Oregon finding got his groove on.

Part of a Hawk 3-for-29 shooting display the first 14 minutes of the game, Woolsey finally got untracked and led his team from a 17-9 deficit to a 51-39 win over Peru St. Bede at the Oregon Thanksgiving Tournament on Monday.

In order, the 6-4 junior had a basket, an old-fashioned 3-point play, a dunk and a free throw to give Oregon a 19-17 lead at the end of the second quarter.

St. Bede briefly took the lead back early in the third quarter on seven straight points by center Max Manning. It was all Woolsey after that, as he exploded for 17 second-half points as the Hawks pulled away.

Other than 31 points from Woolsey, no one from Oregon had more than five points. After the bad start, the Hawks ended up an equally woeful 19-for-62 from the field.

“We took some bad shots and we took some good shots that didn’t go in,” Oregon coach Quinn Virgil said. “It may have been first night jitters. I thought we cleaned it up in the second half.”

Behind five different scorers in the third quarter, the Hawks went up 34-27 and St. Bede would never catch up.

“Trey has gotten stronger and played pretty smart. He’s willing to share it with his teammates too,” Virgil said. “I like our team chemistry. We have guys that like each other and have fun out there.”

Unlike the last couple years without much depth, the Hawk squad is at least 10-deep and Virgil was not shy about rotating players.

“There’s not one that I don’t think can do things,” Virgil said. “We do need to work on our rebounding. We weren’t getting bodies on St. Bede, but they were bigger than us.”

Cardinals beat Le-Win to earn trip to state final Forreston upsets Panthers 34-28

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Yes, Dom Christensen had a kickoff return for a touchdown, two key important pass receptions and what may have been a touchdown-saving interception, but Forreston’s 34-28 upset win over defending state champ Lena-Winslow in the 1A semifinals on Nov. 17 was decided in the trenches.

That is where interior linemen Kilar Huenefeld, Sawyer Wild, Travis Wilson, Jacob Dye, Derek DeVries and Mitchell Heinz manhandled a more celebrated unit from Le-Win. “Those were three D-I guys we were going against,” said Heinz, who was named all-state earlier in the week. “I have no idea how we did it. I think we wanted it more.

Coach Zick was preaching to get it going early.”

One of those Le-Win standouts, Ian Kuehl, echoed what Heinz said.

“They came out with a lot more intensity than us and wanted it more,” Kuehl said.

That intensity was shown on the opening drive when Forreston took an 8-0 lead with only 1:16 gone.

Evan Kelsey burst free for 32 yards in the first play from scrimmage and two plays later, it was Bailey Cullor passing to Christensen for 32 more yards.

“We were going to throw on the third play no matter what,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said. “We saw something on film that we thought we could take advantage of.”

Garett Badertscher, who was all over the field on both sides on ball, crashed over from nine yards out and added the PAT run for the early lead.

“We came out ready. It was amazing how we played the whole game,” Badertscher said.

Le-Win, which had running clocks in all three of its other playoff games, saw its first drive stall after a holding penalty and QB sack by Cailean Davids.

The Panthers did take advantage of a Christensen fumble to close to within 8-6 on a 1-yard touchdown run by Sean Ormiston after an 11-play 56-yard drive.

To show this was going to be different than the 29-0 deficit the Cardinals faced in the regular-season game, it was Forreston marching 67 yards on 13 plays to go up 14-6.

“In the first game, we hammered them on the line of scrimmage,” Le-Win coach Ric Arand said. “Forreston played physical against us this time. If you’re a small school and can do that, you’re going to win.”

Forreston was also aided by critical Panther errors, one of which occurred on the next pay from scrimmage. Quarterback Cade Benson fumbled and Sawyer Wild recovered for Forreston at the L-W 31-yard line.

“We made a lot of big plays and our crowd helped. It got us hyped up,” said Wild, who later would make a jersey-grabbing tackle to save a Le-Win kickoff returner from going the distance.

Forreston couldn’t make a first

down, but Cullor nailed a coffin-corner punt to the 2-yard line. On the next snap, Benson never got the ball and Davids recovered it on the 1-yard line.

“You can’t win big games with mistakes like that,” Arand said.

Badertscher bulled over from his second TD and Forreston led 20-6 midway through the second quarter.

Just when it was looking good for the Cardinals, Le-Win began to exert its muscle.

With Ormiston (37-161 rushing) cracking off long runs, the Panthers closed to within 20-12 seven plays later. Then Forreston had its worse possession of the game.

A fumble, a penalty, another fumble and incompletion made it fourth and long, deep in their own territory. A poorly executed punt attempt resulting in Kuehl making a one-handed block and Le-Win getting the ball at the 1-yard line.

Ormiston easily scored on the next play and the large crowd at Lena had to wonder if the game was shifting into the Panther’s favor.

After another failed Cardinal drive, Le-Win got the ball back 43 yards from the goal line with 1:30 left in the half.

Advancing to the 6-yard line with five seconds left, Benson tried to find Isaiah Bruce in the open, but Christensen read the play and intercepted the pass.

“Holding them out of the end zone was huge,” Wild said.

The U of Iowa recruit and allstater was bottled up all afternoon.

He only had two carries in the second half and gained only 21 yards the entire game, this after averaging over 10 yards a carry this season.

“We weren’t getting to the perimeter with him,” Arand said.

With its stud linemen, Le-Win came in having dominated Forreston up front.

Credit to line coach Greg Burckhardt for turning the tables. Zick said Burckhardt had the Cardinal linemen “geeked up” and ready to go. They played low and physical.

The linebackers and DBs stayed with their assignments.

Getting Smarter The win over Le-Win was also a reflection of this team getting smarter on both sides of the ball as the season progressed, something Zick had been mentioning to me in our weekly post-game interviews.

It was boring for me hearing that each week, but what he said was the truth.

The coaches need to teach the players up and the players need to keep learning. It was no difference than in a classroom and we all know how repetitious than can get.

Up until the Le-Win game, I never knew who called the offensive plays.

It is Eric Bergin, who used to

coach at Pec. Bergin kept the Panthers off guard with creative uses of offensive schemes. The timing of the pass plays was particularly effective.

That may have made the biggest difference offensively. Even a pass that wasn’t completed was critically important.

The roughing the passer penalty came on third-and-10 with the score tied 20-20. Had the penalty not occurred, it would have been the fourth straight 3-and-out for the Forreston offense.

Le-Win was roaring back and getting the ball could have changed the final outcome.

To me, that one play was the turning point of the game.

Bailey Cullor’s leadership as quarterback was quite apparent. Watching his body language, one can tell he’s in complete control and things don’t faze him.

After three close wins in a row, Forreston will be battle-tested against Camp Point Central, a team located in western Illinois that has several years of post-season success.

This will be Camp Point’s first trip downstate and a welcome relief for Forreston to finally play someone other than NUIC teams.

There is also the wonderful mystery of seeing how you stack up against someone from another part of the state.

My only regret is wishing the Car-

dinals would be at DeKalb one of these years instead of at cavernous Memorial Stadium for the third time.

Actually, I prefer to watch these games at high school venues instead of at a college.

Whether it was the scene at Lanark for the EPC game that I noticed in the way to Lena or the environment created by thousands of fans ringing the side of Lena’s field with the snow as a backdrop, it was a glorious sight.

Byron vs. Monticello After four blowout wins, Byron will finally get a test against Monticello in the 3A finals. Did you know Byron coach Jeff Boyer and Kyle Zick were freshmen teammates in baseball and football at Augustana?

If both Forreston and Byron win this week, that will make it 10 football state titles for Rt. 72 schools in Ogle county, all since 1999. For local fans, it is a chance to take in a doubleheader with local schools.

It’s a shame EPC couldn’t make it, so it would have been a tripleheader.

Like Forreston, the Wildcatz left it all on the field and have nothing to be ashamed of.

Strangely, it was Le-Win and EPC dominating conference play, but it is Forreston the only one left downstate.

orreston’s performance in football on Saturday was the result of coaches and players connecting with one another at the highest level.

Taking weeks, months and even years of preparation, it was a lesson in how sports are meant to be played.

Not only did the coaches adequately train, teach and motivate the players to compete, but they also had an outstanding game plan.

The players executed their roles, and most importantly, they were mentally tough.

So often on the big stage, many a kid folds because of the taxing emotional nature of playing for “all the marbles”, as is the case with a playoff semifinal.

Coach Kyle Zick, who got his humble beginnings as a ballboy for AFC when his dad coached there, used the word passion to describe the attitude his Cardinals had at Lena.

It was evident from the opening kickoff until that final fourth-down stop.

For Forreston to have any chance against a more-gifted Le-Win team, all those elements would have to be in place for them to win.

Even if Forreston lost, that would be okay too, but they made a supreme effort. Truly, that’s all you can ask for.

What fascinated me most was difference in line play from one year

Coming out in the third quarter, Le-Win put together a couple first downs, but was hurt by another penalty. However, they still seemed to be in control, as Keegan Gyland tackled Kelsey for a 5-yard loss and Forreston had to punt the ball right back.

Forreston’s defense then rose up and forced a 3-and-out, as Ormiston, Gyland and Bruce were stopped for little or no gain.

Getting the ball back, Forreston had more trouble on offense and looked to be stopped on a thirdand-10 incompletion. But, in the most harmful penalty of the game to Le-Win, the Panthers were flagged for roughing the passer.

That kept the drive alive, as did Badertscher gaining three yards on a fourth-and-2 at midfield.

The real game-changer, though, was Cullor calmly connecting with Christensen on a diving 28-yard pass play.

That set up a first-and-goal at the 5 and even a 5-yard procedure penalty didn’t keep Badertscher from scoring his third TD to make it 26-20. He also gave the Cardinals a little breathing room with the PAT run.

“They beat us off the ball all day long,” Arand said. “And, they made more big plays.”

Badertscher blew into the backfield and tackled Bruce for an 8-yard loss and Le-Win had to punt on its first drive of the fourth quarter.

On a short field following a Cardinal punt, he had 27 of the 28 yards and his fourth TD and second PAT run.

With Le-Win squibbing the kickoff up the middle, Christensen made a play that will be etched in Cardinal football lore for years to come and also prompting a teammate on the sidelines to quip, ‘AJ who?’ in reference to his older brother and star of last year’s team.

“The first thing I thought about was ball security,” said Christensen, who picked the ball up at the 30-yard line. “Next, if I could get some yards, I would try to do that. Then, the field started to open up and it was 1-on-1 (with Parker Magee).

I’m not a natural like my brother, but was able to make a move on him.”

That move put Christensen on a path down the Le-Win sideline with only Jack Setterstrom having a shot at him. It was no match, as Christensen ran untouched the rest of the way for the 34-28 lead.

“Not in a million years did I think this was possible,” Christensen said.

Le-Win still had plenty of time to launch a game-winning drive, but Ormiston was stopped by a whole host of Cardinal defenders on a fourthand-2.

“These kids played their heart out,” Zick said.

“You could tell they really wanted it with the passion and fire they showed.”

Forreston (11-2) will play Camp Point Central (12-1) at 10 a.m. Friday in the 1A state final.

Byron rolls over Herscher 42-0 in semifinals Tigers to play at Champaign this Friday for 3A title

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com The weekend before Thanksgiving used to Jeff Boyer’s time to go deer hunting.

Not any more.

Between semifinals appearances in 2014, 2017, 2018 and a daughter being born three years ago, the Byron head coach has found his priorities rearranged.

What’s special this year is that his Tigers are headed to the state finals for the first time since he was quarterback of the state-championship team of 1999.

“It’s been at least five years since I hunted that weekend,” Boyer said. “It’s a good problem to have.”

As expected, Byron (12-0) made it four easy playoffs wins in a row to advance to Champaign to play Monticello (12-0) at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Last year, Byron nipped the Sages 21-20 in the second round before losing to Elmhurst IC in the semis.

“In hindsight, we played three of the best teams in a row,” said Boyer, in reference to 2017 playoff slugfests with Williamsville, Monticello and EIC.

Just when it looked as Byron’s chances were cooked, linebacker Kevin Claunch forced a fumble that the Tigers recovered. Claunch is back for his senior year, as are many other Tigers that saw playing time.

“It was a mud game,” Boyer said. “We struggled offensively, but the defense had a great game. It came down to us finding a way to win.”

Monticello beat previously unbeaten Carlinville 40-14 in the other semifinal. Snyder, an allstater, had 281 yards passing and five TD passes.

Monticello graduated its top rusher, but 6-0, 180pound Alek Bundy had a 100-yard game against Carlinville.

The Sages run a spread and will try to out-finesse Byron with route concepts and different offensive formations.

“It’s a tale of two different teams,” Boyer said.

“We’re bigger, but they’re very athletic.”

The Sages are coached by Cully Welter, a veteran mentor who was inducted into the Illinois Football Coaches Hall-of-Fame this year. While at Aledo, Welter had three state titles and two runner-up finishes.

This will be Monticello’s first trip the state finals in seven semifinal appearances.

“He’s a tremendous coach and will have them ready,” said Boyer, in his seventh year at Byron.

“It’s going to be a great football game.”

Sixteen Highland Community College Agriculture students recently participated in the Illinois Professional Agriculture Students Annual Conference at Lincoln Land College in Springfield.

The conference included competitions in mock job interviews, agriculture sale competitions, agriculture knowledge quiz bowl, and a number of agriculture-specific team competitions that included general knowledge exams, problem-solving scenarios, and current issue student presentations.

The students also participated in a business session that elected new state officers and updated the Illinois PAS name from Post-Secondary Agriculture Students to the current title of Professional Agriculture Students. The name change aligns the state organization with the direction of Highland’s national affiliation.

“I believe that the PAS Conference provides a great opportunity for our students to collaborate with peers from other colleges while showcasing their abilities to potential employers,” said Justin Ebert, agriculture instructor. “I congratulate everyone that participated and encourage all of our students to give PAS a try, you never know when you might meet someone that will give you an opportunity you never saw coming.”

This collection is displayed in the main hallway of the Loveland as well as in individual rooms throughout the building, which are all open to the public.

A wide variety of art media is represented, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, collage, gouache, and graphite.

The Loveland also has an extensive historical collection on the second floor.

The Loveland Community House of Dixon recently hosted a tour of its art collection for the members of the Eagle’s Nest Art Group.

The tour was led by Colleen Logsdon who helped to catalogue the collection and record each artist’s biographical information.

She has published a book about the art collection with the help of her husband Bob Logsdon and journalist Nancy Mayfield.

The book traces the history of the Phidian Art Club which sponsored art shows at the Loveland Community House beginning in 1947.

The book is titled Phidian Art Club 1890-2009 and is available at both the Dixon and Oregon Public Libraries.

During the tour, Logsdon detailed the early years of Emma and George Loveland and their work to build and support a community house for the town of Dixon.

She also highlighted the efforts of long-time Phidian members Lucia W. Dement and Agnes Ferguson who

Stillman Bank to hold open house Friday, Nov. 30 All six locations offer a variety of holiday treats, beverages Christmas will come early to all six of the Stillman Bank locations on Friday, Nov. 30 for the annual Christmas Open House featuring holiday music and a variety of holiday treats and beverages.

In conjunction with the Christmas Open House, all Stillman locations will also hold a Christmas Food

Drive from Friday, Nov. 30 through Saturday, Dec. 8.

All items will be donated to local food pantries just in time for Christmas.

The bank invites everyone from the community to stop in and drop off non-perishable food items to help area families this Christmas.

Now in its 11th year, the bank’s annual food drive has collected nearly 9,500 pounds of food since it began.

At the open house, Stillman employees will hand out calendars and hold the registration for the annual Holiday Giveaway, a long-established tradition at Stillman.

Since the bank’s agriculture roots go back more than 136 years, the Holiday Giveaway is one way that the bank celebrates that history and shows appreciation to its customers for their dedication and loyalty over the years.

Six winners of the Holiday Giveaway will receive for three beef quarters and three pork halves.

Registration will conclude on Monday, Dec. 19 with the drawing on Tuesday, Dec. 20.

The calendar giveaway will continue while supplies last.

Stillman Bank is also holding a Holiday Coloring Contest, open to children up to 10 years old, which

will begin Friday, Nov. 23 and run through Monday, Dec. 10.

Each of the bank’s six locations will select a grand prize winner in two age categories: ages 5 and under and ages 6 through 10.

Winners will receive their very own gingerbread house.

Vet clinic to host pictures with Santa

Recycle holiday lights that no longer work Instead of landfilling those holiday light strands that refuse to work, recycle them.

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department is partnering with local fire departments and villages to again offer several convenient drop-off boxes so those frustrating, nonfunctional holiday light strands can be recycled.

Drop-off boxes are available at the following fire departments: Rochelle, Byron, Stillman Valley, and Mt. Morris.

They will be located at the village halls in Polo, Forreston, and Davis Junction, and Creston. Light strands are also accepted at the Ogle County Courthouse and at the OCSWMD office at 909 Pines Rd., Oregon.

Boxes will remain at these locations until Jan. 25.

Accepted light strands include Italian mini-lights, traditional lights, LED lights, and other holiday light strands. Extension cords are also accepted.

Material not accepted include rope lights, wreaths, garland, metal stakes or silhouettes, live greens, plastic decorations, timers, and light packaging and boxes.

Place light strands into the boxes and do not place shopping or garbage bags into the boxes, doing so hinders the recycling process for this material. Lights and cords will be shipped to Dynamic Lifecycle Innovations in Onalaska, Wisconsin, to be recycled. For more information, call 815-732-4020.

TOMMI HAY BOEDER Tommi Hay Boeder, 66, a 40-plus-year resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died peacefully from this earthly life on Friday, Oct. 26, 2018 in Cedar Rapids.  Tommi was born on Aug. 11, 1952 to William and Alice Hay in Oregon.  She was raised in Chana and graduated from Oregon High School in the Class of 1970 and Central College, Pella, Iowa, in 1974. Tommi had a varied, always giving, career path with Central College, Coe College, Teleconnect, and McLeod Foundation, her own business of painting and wallpapering, and as Executive Director of Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity 1996 to 2009.  Along her life’s paths, Tommi came to fully see how God was (is) working through her and graduated from Eden Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri, with her master’s degree in Divinity.  Tommi was finally ordained into Christian ministry by the United Church of

She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and going to the casinos, and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Ron Arbogast, of Oregon; son, Gary (Pam) Arbogast, of Oregon; grandson, Brent (Iris) Arbogast, of Lexington, South Carolina; step-grandson, Rich (Staci) Simmons, of Pinellas Park, Florida; great-grandchildren, Christ on July 8, 2018.  She served as interim pastor in Bennett, Clarence and, presently, Tipton, Iowa – all congregations which Tommi came to love, and they her. Tommi loved the City of Cedar Rapids.

She loved music, humming and singing, art and ‘the arts’.  She enjoyed walking, dancing, reading and her books.  Tommi loved to laugh or, rather, snort.  Tommi loved bright fabric and colors. Her favorite sounds were the laughter of children and church bells.  Tommi loved her family, her legion of friends and good food.  And‌Tommi loved God. Days before her passing, Tommi said, “I am the happiest I have ever been!â€?  She will forever be remembered for her way of living and loving fully.  We, remaining, are happiest that she was, and is, a part of our lives always.

Tommi is survived by her father, Bill Hay, 93, and Nancy, her stepmom and friend for

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held pending a court appearance. Deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident at 1:04 p.m. on Illinois 38 near the intersection of Woodlawn Road. A eastbound car driven by Brianna Baker, 19, of Rochelle, went out of control on the snow covered roadway and struck the rear of a semi tractor-trailer driven

by Jose Contreras-Barrera, 31, of Mexico.  No injuries were reported as a result

San Mateo Trejo Jr., 24, of Chicago, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear and petition to revoke. He was unable to post bonds of $864 (full cash) and $3,000 (10%) and was jailed pending a court appearance.

Trei Sanders, 24, of Freeport, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while license sus-

pended, and leaving the scene of an accident after deputies responded to a hit and run on Gristmill Road east of Chana Road. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Nov. 17 Tiffany R. Fabish, 33, of Davis Junction, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, possession of cannabis, and possession of drug paraphernalia in the 10,000 block of East Illinois 72. Fabish was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

At approximately 5:47 a.m., deputies, Oregon EMS, and Mt. Morris EMS responded to a one-vehicle accident with an injury.

After investigation, deputies learned Andy McClearin, 44, of Rock Falls, was traveling northbound in the 1,000 block of North Daysville Road in his Ford Focus.

He was driving around a curve when he lost control on the snow-covered

road and traveled off the east side of the roadway before striking a tree head on.

He was transported to KSB Hospital, Dixon, by Mt. Morris EMS for minor injuries.

Nov. 18 Nicholas Pillion, 18, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for consumption of liquor as a minor. He did not post the $5,000 (10%) bond and was held in jail pending a court appearance.
