Wean speaks at Veterans Day services Vietnam veteran reminds audiences to remember sacrifices Vietnam veteran Doug Wean, of Mt. Morris, spoke at the David L. Rahn Junior High’s Veterans Day program on Nov. 9 and again at the Oregon VFW’s recognition on Nov. 11 in Oregon.

Wean, the recipient of a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts, reminded both audiences of the significance of the day, which was originally called Armistice Day. “Today I don’t come before you to salute war. I come to celebrate and remember our warrior veterans: those from before and those serving today,” he said. “The 11th day of the 11th month at 11 a.m. We celebrate the 100th anniversary since the battlefields of World War I fell silent.

“We don’t mark this day, every year, as a celebration of victory. We mark this day instead as a celebration and remembrance, of those who have made victory possible.

“It is the day, that we keep in our minds the brave men and women of our nation, generations of them, who above all else, believed in, and fought for, a set of Ideals.

“Because our veterans served with selflessness, because they went when called our country still stands, and our founding principles, still shine.”

Wean told the audience at D.L Rahn that, as a Mt. Morris native, he felt a sense of deja vu standing before the stage where he graduated from both eighth grade and high school.

He recounted his family’s service in the military.

“I enlisted following my graduation and was trained as a Navy Hospital Corpsman and served as a medic with the Third Marine Division during the heavy combat, in the TET Offensive of 1968.

Recalling his own experience, Wean said, “You know, sometimes I still hear the call of battle, but they are just memories now, but they still echo, those memories. “What I discovered over 50 years ago today, was an unbidden love, born on the battlefield as it has been born on every battlefield, in every war, this country has ever fought. “We survived, for each other, we died for each other. We shared our fears our hopes and our future dreams with each other. “We didn’t pick each other, we were delivered together by ‘fate’ and our military services. But I know them in a way, that I know no other men. I have never given, anyone such trust. “We were willing to guard something, more precious, than our lives. They would carry my reputation and my memory, if I were to fall in the battlefield. “My hope is that a grateful nation will honor the American veteran with our words and our deeds and our thanks, not just today, but everyday.�

CONSERVATION EVENT

Natural landscape program is Nov. 18 near Oregon Show and tell to begin at 2 p.m. at Kickapoo Center Would you like to have a yard that attracts beautiful birds and butterflies and delightful little animals at far less cost than a manicured turf ?

A program designed to help and show what others have done will be presented by the Prairie Preservation Society on Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Kickapoo Center, 1919 N. Limekiln Rd., Oregon.

Laura Sjoquist, of the Natural Lands Institute, which is a member supported land conservation organization, will present Conservation@Home, with photos of yards and grounds that others can replicate with little investment or effort.

Restoring native habitat need not be limited to large scale areas. It can be done “in backyards, parking lots, school grounds and church gardens,” Sjoquist said.

The program is free and open to the public. Reservations are not necessary.

Children are welcome in the presence of an adult. Light refreshments will be served.

Holiday event is Saturday, Nov. 24 in downtown Oregon Oregon’s Candlelight Walk originated many years ago inside Conover Square Mall.

The business owners inside this “specialty mall” wanted a way to say “Thank You” to a community that had supported them throughout the year.

“We all know that small business cannot survive if the folks in town don’t support them. This was our “thank you” to them, our gift back to the community,” reminisced the owner of a past cornerstone business once located inside Conover Square.

“This highly anticipated holiday event has since blossomed into a

community tradition that is attended by folks from far reaching distances,” said Debbie Dickson, executive director of the Oregon Chamber of Commerce and Candlelight Walk Committee Member. “Candlelight Walk has grown into what it is today, embracing the spirit that gave it birth and moving it along the path that progress designs.

DUMC to host potato bar to support missions Disciples United Methodist Church, on the corner of Hitt Street and Maple Avenue in Mt. Morris, will host a potato bar complete with baked potatoes, assorted toppings, relishes, beverages and a dessert bar on Sunday, Dec. 2 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of the church.

The freewill donations received from this potato bar will all go to support two missions that DUMC has supported for several years.

One of the missions, Heifer Inter-

national, has become the DUMC Sunday School children’s annual mission project.

Currently the children are exploring countries and projects offered through Heifer to understand the needs of the people and how the projects help improve the lives of the families.

The money they raise throughout this Sunday School year, including monies from the Dec. 2 potato bar will be gifted to purchase animals through Heifer in the country they

select.

The second mission that will benefit from the potato bar donations is a part of Bill Hare’s Honduras Mission.

The funds raised will help to pay the school fees for about 90 Las Palmas, Honduras, school children to insure that they are able to begin their new school year on time when school begins again in February of 2019.

Honduran school fees not only provide the supplies the children

need for the school year, but also provide a nutritional noon meal for the children each day they attend school.

Las Palmas is a farming community in southwest Honduras that has been greatly impacted by drought over the last decade.

This project provides crucial support for the Las Palmas children and families, the friends Hare’s teams mission with in Honduras.

VFW Commander Bob Coulter. “We will no longer take calls after Dec. 3.

We cannot accept orders after that because food will be ordered. Everyone needs to call in for themselves, no calls for neighbors or relation.

“You will be required to furnish us with the following information about your household: How many adults, number of children, a good address for delivery, a good phone number, and be able to be home home on Dec. 22 starting at 8 a.m.” he said.

Delivery should be completed by noon. Orders will be only taken from Oregon School District residents except for VFW Post 8739 members who reside outside that area.

“When you call please be patient as we are busy,” Coulter said. “The best time to call is from 3 to 4 p.m.

We are also accepting donations to help with the cost of the food. We are also seeking volunteers to help deliver on Dec. 22.”

The Mt. Morris Fire Protection District Board of Trustees will have two seats up for re-election in the April 2, 2019 Consolidated Election.

Petition packets are available at the firehouse, 15 E. Center St., Mt. Morris, and may be picked up anytime from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Circulation of nominating petitions may begin immediately.

The last day that potential candidates may file nominating papers is Monday, Dec. 17 no later than 5 p.m.

The office is closed on weekends.

Mt. Morris Goodfellows seek holiday donations The Mt. Morris Goodfellows are accepting monetary donations for those in need this holiday season.

Donations are greatly appreciated. Jerry Griffin and Charlie Beard, Goodfellows Co-Chairmen, said that the Goodfellows will once again be able to provide

assistance this Christmas thanks to the financial support of the community.

Each holiday season, for more than 60 years, the Goodfellows have provided food assistance and fruit baskets to residents in Mt. Morris.

Christmas light show to begin on Nov. 24 Nothing will stop the grand lighting extravaganza on Saturday, Nov 24.

The exterior of the Jerry Stauffer home at 214 W. First St. in Mt. Morris will be transformed into a Christmas winter wonderland for the Christmas season.

The light show is in sync to Christmas music.

Approximately 50,000 lights will come alive with the music that evening entertaining all who attend the public event which kicks off at 5 p.m.

The streets around the home will be partially blocked off so people

may wander around and take in the view from a distance somewhat like a large screen.

Santa will be there to greet the kids in a real sleigh, and a North Pole Express mail box for letters to Santa will be available as well.

After the show begins everyone

is invited to gravitate to the garage area of the one for light refreshments of hot dogs, homemade cookies and warm apple cider while supplies last.

Monetary donations are encouraged to support the Loaves and Fishes local Food Pantry.

The first is deemed Extreme (think Clark Griswold) and the scone category is Traditional. Businesses will be judged in a separate category.

The entry fee is $5, and registration forms are available at the Mt. Morris Village Hall, Union Savings Bank and the Mt. Morris branch of Rockford Bell Credit Union.

The deadline to register is Monday, Dec. 10. Judging will be on Saturday, Dec. 15 so make sure your lights are a blazing that evening.

Our community choir will present “Behold, a Savior” on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Polo.

I hope you will join us for this celebration in song.

In the afternoon, Deb Ohlwine, Charlotte Hoppe, Amy Sikyta, and I met in Sterling for an afternoon at the movies.

We had a great time watching the movie and sharing the experience with each other.

This past Tuesday evening, Charlotte and I met at the high school with sandwiches, water, and homemade cookies from Jean Cunningham.

It was our pleasure to bring dinner to the cast and crew of the drama club fall production.

Later on Tuesday evening, our PEO Chapter DW held our regular meeting at the Church of the Brethren.

Our meeting was held in the Betty McCaffrey Room, named after our dear sister.

Lisa Coffman and Jean Cunningham came into town from Pine Creek.

I joined my brother, Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, and several family members at the drama club play,

“Acting Can Be Murder.”

The cast and crew did a tremendous job with this production.

My nephews, Hayden and Garrett, both had important parts in the play and behind the scenes.

Congratulations to the Beth Wiegmann and her students for a job well done.

On Saturday morning, our women’s breakfast group met at Charlotte’s home.

Charlotte welcomed us with a delicious breakfast and warm hospitality.

Joining in the meal and fellowship were Sheryl Hopkins, Jean Cunningham, Martha Johannsen, Vicki Hay, and myself.

In the afternoon, I had the honor of treating Brian Toms to a movie and dinner for his 50th birthday.

We had a nice visit and reminisced about his brother, Robert. I am very glad for the great memories with our church family.

Once Halloween concluded, the Christmas decorations started going up.

This isn’t happening in my home, but the decorations are popping up in the cubicles at work.

On Facebook, friends have started sharing their finished Christ-

mas trees.

While I am perfectly happy to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas, I can understand why some would start to celebrate so early.

This is the season of hope, joy, love, and peace.

The lights and decorations are only symbols of what brings us so much joy.

This is the time of year when we are filled with love for each other.

We are filled with hope for the season because of the hope that came when Jesus was born.

Of course, we would want to extend those wonderful feelings.

We can feel that kind of hope and love all year long.

We only need to accept the gift of Jesus into our hearts.

When we celebrate our Savior each day, we find that, hope, joy, love, and peace will be a permanent part of our lives.

I hope to see you next week when we celebrate the harvest season in our church.

We are thankful for our hard-working farm families that take care of the land each year.

Come and celebrate this season at our little church in the country.

Even though the days are more dreary and dark, a gentle snowfall has a beauty only God could create.

We thank Him for the love and care that surrounds us each day.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Jim and Nancy Hopkins.

Rev. Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young friends, Kaitlyn, Laura, and Harper.

Charlotte continued her sermon series with today’s topic, risk.

After church, I went to the rehearsal for our upcoming Christmas cantata.

2018 ELECTION

Nearly 60 percent turn out for mid-term election

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A high number of Ogle County voters cast their ballots last week in the mid-term election.

The turn-out was 59.4 percent, which means 19,197 of the county’s 32,316 registered voters turned out for the Nov. 6 General Election.

“It was pretty high,” said county clerk Laura Cook. “It was only 51 percent in 2014, the last mid-term.

It was nice to see that kind of turnout.”

Cook attributed the interest in the election to the highly contested state governor’s race between Republican incumbent Bruce Rauner and Democratic challenger J.B. Pritzker.

Although Rauner lost the race, 53.5 percent of Ogle County voters supported him, by a margin of 10,178 votes to only 6,347 for his opponent.

In Ogle County, 2,537 voters cast their ballots early, Cook said, and technically the results won’t be official for a few more days.

“We will be accepting ballots for another two weeks,” Cook said Nov. 9. “As long as they are postmarked

by Nov. 6 they will count.”

United Way grant seekers’ meeting for Ogle County programs is Dec. 5 United Way of Ogle County, an affiliate of the United Way of Rock River Valley, will hold a meeting for grant seekers for the upcoming funding cycle on Wednesday, Dec. 5.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. and is open to non-profit organiza-

tions that provide services to clients in Ogle County.

Organizations will learn how to submit funding for United Way’s next funding cycle beginning July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020 as well as the type of programs and services

typically funded.

The meeting will be held in the River Room of the Oregon Park District’s Nash Recreation Center, 304 S. 5th Street in Oregon.

Burkardt to celebrate 80th birthday Nov. 30 Beverly Burkardt, of Polo, will celebrate her 80th birthday on Nov. 30 with a family dinner.

Beverly was born on Nov. 30, 1938 to Chester and Wanetta (Chet and Ned) Bonnell and has been married to William (Bill) Burkardt for 60 years.

Beverly and Bill have four daughters, Pamela (Ron) Ballard, of Forreston, Patricia (Tim Witmer) Brewer, Paula (Michael) Faivre and Penny Burkardt, all of Polo. They also have eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Beverly and Bill owned and operated Burkardt’s LP Gas, Polo, for 35 years before retiring and selling their business on May 10, 2017.

The Mt. Morris Community Women’s Club is a sponsor in an event honoring of one of their own members, Jeannine Price, at the “2018 Parade of Heroes — A Monumental Salute to the Veterans” in Washington D.C. The club gave a donation to the Rochelle Township High School Marching Band which was chosen to represent the State of Illinois at the Veteran’s Day weekend ceremonies in Washington, D.C. The ceremonies will honor those who served during three pivotal periods in history of the U.S.: World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War. This year also marks the 75th anniversary of World War II. Retired Commander Jeannine Price’s name appears on the banner that the band carried in the parade during the ceremonies in Washington D.C. Price served for 23 years in the Navy Nurse Corp during the Vietnam and Desert Storm eras.

She is a graduate of Mt. Morris High School and a 1970 graduate of Mennonite Hospital School of Nursing in Bloomington, where upon graduation she enlisted in the Navy Nurse Corp and served from 1970 until 1993, retiring with the rank of Commander.

Fulfilling its role as one of northern Illinois’ most progressive music venues, the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center will once again host the Songwriters Open Mic held on the third Friday of each month.

This month’s date of Nov. 16, and a Christmas Finale on Dec. 21 will round out the 2018 schedule.

The Songwriters Open Mic produced by Jerry Tice of the Mountain Grass Band and co-hosted by star performer Ruth Ann Lillstrom will showcase original musical or lyrical

compositions performed by the creating artist.

No covers and no accompanist. All material must be family friendly.

A new feature, Tips on Tunes, offering assistance on chord progression, arrangements, and presentation will be a feature of this month’s show.

Each performer gets two songs and no more than 10 minutes.

Sound is provided, but no complicated setups or processors.

Each event will run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Performer check-in is 6:30 p.m. Performance order will be drawn at 6:50 p.m.

The Mt. Morris Moose Family Center has an extensive menu of food and beverage so arrive hungry and thirsty and ready for original music.

Performing Arts Guild will present radio play Save the date for “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” This December the Performing Arts Guild will bring a beloved holiday classic to the stage.

“It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” will be presented on Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8

With the help of an ensemble that brings the characters to the stage, the story of idealistic George Bailey unfolds one fateful Christmas Eve. The radio play is a fresh and inventive way of reconnecting with a classic story of love and redemption.

Auditions were held in September.

Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, is the largest honor society in higher education. Founded in 1918, there are now 1,250 Phi Theta Kappa chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, and other countries around the world.

The society offers opportunities for scholarships, intellectual enrichment, and personal development through programs based on the society’s hallmarks of scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship.

To be eligible for membership, a student must complete a minimum of twelve hours of college level course work and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on 4.0 scale.

Students must maintain a high academic standing throughout their enrollment in the two-year college.

Cristina Tranchina has been selected as Oregon High School’s Senior of Distinction for the month of October.

Students are chosen after being nominated by OHS staff.

“She is one of the strongest leaders in the senior class,” said Dyan Mowry, Student Council Advisor.

“She is extremely dependable, an amazing student, and she is very helpful and friendly to all the students here at OHS. “Cristina sees something that needs to be done and jumps in and offers to help before I even have the chance to ask,” Mowry said. “Cristina went above and beyond as an executive board member of student council for this year’s Homecoming.

“She not only handled her own responsibilities, she jumped in to help when we had to experience a reconstruction of the board. More than anything the growth I have seen in Cristina amazes me.”

“Cristina has been a leader in her class for as long as I’ve known her,” Davidson said. “She is a hard-working and determined student who utilizes her talents and strives to fulfill her potential. She displays these attributes both in the classroom and in her extra-curricular activities.

“Cristina also puts in a lot of work for the community logging nearly 300 community service hours since her time at Oregon High School.

READING MATTERS

Tips offered on helping 7-12 grade students T

his column is the last in a series that looks at general expectations for reading homework for different grade levels.

For this month we will consider supporting students in junior high and high school.

This will help us see the important role we play in supporting our children and grandchildren during these years when content area reading is a key focus.

Certainly students in middle school and high school are faced with more required reading for school, and much of that reading is in nonfiction texts.

Today these readings come from textbooks as well as articles and online sources and can include charts and data presented in various ways including infographics.

Nonfiction texts are generally more difficult to read because they are information packed and contain

The content vocabulary words are often unfamiliar words, yet understanding their meanings is necessary in order to understand and learn from the text.

Strong academic vocabulary knowledge is a foundation for school success.

The best way to build that is to read a lot and to read across all different kinds of texts. Really learning a word and being able to use it in writing requires multiple exposures to the word, so seeing words in different texts deepens our understanding of their meanings.

Oregon falls to Rochelle 49-31

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In the season opener for Oregon girls basketball, it was too much of Abby Lundquist in a 49-31 loss to Rochelle.

The 5-6 Hub senior actually outscored the entire Oregon team, tallying 34 points.

“Her leadership on the floor was phenomenal. She had a lot of open looks,” Rochelle coach Tony Rowan said on WRHL’s post-game show.

Prior to the game, Oregon coach Wendy Lambrigtsen knew the Hawks would have to slow down Lundquist to have any chance.

“There is one player we have to watch out for,” she said, referring to Lundquist.

It wasn’t until the third quarter that anyone else for Rochelle even scored a field goal, as Lundquist had 24 of the 27 first-half points.

Behind Olivia Lambrigtsen, Oregon got off to an early lead. Rochelle didn’t pull ahead until Lundquist hit a 3-pointer to make it 8-7 in favor of the Hubs.

After that, it was all Rochelle. In fact, Oregon only made two field goals from that point of the first quarter until the fourth quarter.

Hawk bowlers defeat Rockford Christian Life, Erie-Prophetstown The Oregon Hawks boys’ bowling team defeated Christian Life by a total pinfall of 3,650 to 2,226 on Nov. 9. The JV bowled unopposed.

The Hawks had three bowlers with 600 series, two with 550 series and were lead by a 705 series.

Austin Strite lead the hawks with a 705 series with games of (234, 247, 224).

Jacob Smith followed with a 624, Kyle Strite had 607, Eddie Buttens had 604, Charlie Bachman had 557, and Tyler Meyers had 553.

“This was a great start for the young Hawks. The Hawks are very young again this year,” said coach Eric Carlson. “We have three seniors, six juniors, five sophomores, and two freshman. This season looks very bright for the Hawks.”

On the JV side, Justin Poole lead with a 609. The JV team shot 2,668 as a team.

On Nov. 13, Oregon hosted Erie-Prophetstown at Town & Country Lanes.

Oregon won the match with 3,742

total pins to Erie-Prophetstown’s 1,937. Erie-Prophetstown is a brand new club team this season.

“We had an outstanding performance on the lanes tonight,” Carlson said. “We averaged 207.9 as a team in the win against Erie-Prophetstown.”

Oregon was lead by Austin Strite with a 677 series. Strite was followed very closely by Jacob Smith with a 668 series, Eddie Buttens with a 658 series, and Justin Poole with a 653 series.

They were followed up by Kyle Strite with a 554 series and Charlie Bachman with a 531 series to round out the varsity scores.

Oregon JV also had a very good night on the lanes. They were lead

by Tanner Clayton with a 458 series.

He was followed by Nico Giuffre with a 449, Isaac Kaltenbrun with a 448, and Tyler Meyers with a 406 series.

“We also had three other JV 2 bowlers who also got three games in and bowled very well,” Carlson said.

It’s a new girls basketball coach for Oregon, but a name that is familiar for a lot of different reasons.

Wendy Lambrigtsen returns to the Hawk sidelines after a 20-year absence.

After coaching at Oregon from 1995-98, Lambrigtsen stepped down to raise her two daughters.

The older of the two, Samantha, went on to become Oregon’s all-time leading scorer, cracking the career 2,000-point mark. Youngest daughter Olivia is a junior on this year’s team.

Wendy is a 1988 Mt. Morris grad, playing sports for the legendary Salley Wessels. She went on to play basketball at Rockford College.

Thus, she is no stranger to the game or the local area. She replaces Kristy Eckardt, who was 123-116 in eight years as head coach.

Last year’s team was primarily senior-dominated with 5-9 sophomore Olivia Lambrigtsen playing a key role at point guard. She is the only returning starter, who also saw time on varsity as freshman.

“What important is the versatility she gives us,” Wendy Lambrigtsen said. “She’ll play inside and outside and provide leadership.”

Seniors coming back are Hannah Donaldson, MyKenzie Beitel and Abi Hopkins.

“Hannah’s a good team player with a nice perimeter shot,” Lambrigtsen said. “She has four years in

the program and is a club player.”

Hopkins comes back after recovery from a knee injury that sidelined her for the whole season.

“She very competitive and came back with a vengeance,” Lambrigtsen said.

Beitel was listed as a forward last year. Lambrigtsen likes her personality and the fact she is not afraid to mix it up on the court.

Juniors helping out will be Breanna DeHaan and Lauren Montavon, the younger sister of Oregon’s top player from last year, Bailey Montavon.

Lambrigtsen is high on three underclassmen.

“Janae Bothe (5-9) will play for us a freshman and is smooth in the post,” she said.

At 6-foot-2, sophomore Brenna Noon will be the tallest player and is working on her footwork.

“Ella Martin is one heck of a playmaker and clever passer,” said Lambrigtsen of the 5-6 sophomore.

Oregon will emphasize defense and be a team on the run.

“I like to run. I think we could surprise some people,” Lambrigtsen said. “I’m very excited.

In practice, Lambrigtsen has been pushing the team and running has been a part of it. That conditioning could play dividends.

“I think we can cause issues for other teams,” she said.

Oregon is coming off back-to-back 12-win seasons. This weekend at the Blackhawk Center, the Hawks host their annual tournament.

Cards hold off Dakota to advance to semi-finals Forreston to play at Lena-Winslow on Saturday at 2 p.m.

With a hard-fought 22-20 win over Dakota on Nov. 10, the Cardinals earned a rematch of last year’s semifinal opponent, Lena-Winslow.

Early on, Forreston learned that it was a different Dakota team than the one they beat 40-20 earlier in the year.

“We knew Dakota would come out on fire,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said.

So did the Cardinals, in an opening 12-play, 66-yard drive, which saw Evan Kelsey hit paydirt for a 3-yard score. Four plays before, it was Kelsey getting three yards on a fourth-and-2 to keep the drive alive.

Ethan Mulder added what later proved to be an important 2-point conversion. Kelsey would add the second conversion.

The difference between this game and last, when Forreston had a 20-0 lead, was that Dakota came right back down and scored. Nearly identical to Forreston, it was an 11-play, 65-yard drive.

QB Josh Clark, found Evan Riggle for a 6-yard scoring pass and it was a game on at 8-7.

Dakota’s defense forced a 3-andout and moved into Forreston’s red zone. Needing a big play, it was

Cailean Davids coming up with it.

He disrupted the Dakota backfield enough to cause a fumble that ended the scoring threat.

“It was belly option and (Clark) tried to pitch at the last second,” Davids said.

Taking over at the 30-yard line, the Cardinals methodically moved down field after Bailey Cullor got them going with a 20-yard run that faked out the Indians.

However, the drive stalled after 13 plays when Garett Badertscher was stacked up for no gain on fourth down.

Forreston did get the ball back at midfield with 4:41 left in the second quarter. With Dakota selling out against the run, Cullor made them pay with a 42-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Davids for a 16-7 lead.

After a Badertscher interception on a Dom Christensen tipped pass, Forreston got the ball back with less than two minutes left in the half.

Not content to take the 2-possession lead into the locker room, it was Cullor and Kelsey hooking up on a 45-yard bomb that got the Cardinals within range for a couple shots at the end zone.

Forreston didn’t score but had momentum on their side coming out at half on the chilly night on the home field.

Both teams traded punts before Davids nearly went 80-yards with another fumble.

Christensen scored the next touchdown for the Cards when the junior running back broke two tackles at the line of scrimmage and outran the secondary for a 55-yard touchdown.

Attempting to make what would likely be an insurmountable 24-7 lead with time running out in the third quarter, Forreston’s extrapoint run failed. but they held on for

the win despite a late Dakota rally.

The biggest test comes this week in the form of Lena-Winslow, who crushed Aurora Christian 57-14.

Forreston will play the Panthers on Saturday, Nov. 17 in Lena. Game time is 2 p.m.

Byron’s undefeated football team has been making a mockery of the 3A bracket and Lisle was its latest victim.

About the only thing the Tigers didn’t accomplish was a running clock in a 42-7 thumping of the Lions on Nov. 10.

“It was out best effort in the playoffs,” Byron coach Jeff Boyer said.

Byron took a 27-0 lead before Lisle got on the board. However, the Lions threatened on their first drive of the game.

A 59-yard pass from Jay McGrath to Demetrius Kellie and another first down made it first-and-goal at the 5-yard line. But, a fumble by McGrath stretching for extra yardage was recovered by Blake Eder of Byron.

“The momentum got away from us on that first drive,” Lisle coach Paul Parpet “That didn’t decide the game, though. Byron was a very good team.”

Quickly going 89 yards in nine plays, Ricky Messling made it 7-0 on a 2-yard plunge. Isaac Stickler had runs of 28 and 20 to help set up the score.

Lisle managed a couple first downs on its next possession, but had to punt.

Taking over at the 16-yard line, it was 10 plays this time to increase the lead to 14-0 early in the second quarter, with Stickler doing the honors from nine yards out.

“We had to win the battle up front and we did,” Boyer said.

On defense, Byron held Lisle to only 59 yards on 25 carries. After it was 35-7, that defense and Lion penalties created a third-and-52 situation. That was symbolic of how far Lisle was behind the entire afternoon.

Byron (12-0) travels to play Herscher (8-4), a narrow 24-20 winner over Monmouth-Roseville, with the winner advancing the 3A state championship game. Herscher lost to Lisle 14-3 in conference play earlier this season. Lisle (10-2) bows out after having won its first conference title since 1981 and also beating perennial power Wilmington for the first time in 29 years.

Two local teams headed to semi-final matchups A

s we head into the football semifinal playoffs, Byron looks to be a lock for a trip downstate, while Forreston and EPC face juggernauts.

Facing No. 15 seed Herscher, Byron’s might have its easiest test of the post season in what has proven to be a very weak northern bracket. Lena-Winslow in 1A would give Byron a better test than its 3A foes.

Last year, Byron had a similarly talented team, but had to contend with Monticello, Williamsville and EIC. That’s a brutal stretch and it’s probably appropriate that the Tigers finally caught a break after years of tough competition.

On the other side of the bracket is Carlinville and Monticello, both undefeated and potentially capable of giving Byron a game.

While at the Forreston-Dakota game, I ran into retired Rochelle coach Kevin Crandall on the sideline. Crandall was Kyle Zick’s coach in high school and commented to me how much he appreciated the atmosphere of 1A football.

Compared to 5A in which Rochelle plays in, it is a different level of play, but the environment created by fans from Forreston and Dakota made it special.

The chilly weather, while a slight discomfort, only added to the surroundings. It certainly didn’t affect the quality of play on the field.

It was good to see Dakota football come back to life after a bit of dormancy the last few years. Those kids played extremely hard, reminiscent of those tough-as-nails Indian teams of the past.

Quarterback Josh Clark and end Carter Drake were the real deal.

Forreston gets it done more by committee. With so many options, you never know from game to game who’s going to come up with the big play, be it on offense or defense.

With such a decisive win over Aurora Christian, Le-Win will be favored over Forreston and possess an edge in physicality and line play.

But, Forreston is definitely capable of pulling the upset. They have been playing mistake-free for most of the season, with only eight turnovers in 12 games and fewer than the norm penalties.

It is imperative that they be able

to pass the ball and Bailey Cullor showed glimpses against Dakota.

Behind that strong right side of Derek DeVries and Mitchell Heinz, Forreston’s stable of six backs should be able to move the ball.

They proved that against Le-Win already.

The Cardinal defense is opportunistic and who knows – those five or six critical plays each game that often decide the final outcome may bounce Forreston’s way.

With the defensive whipping Gibson City-Melvin put on a very prolific Sterling Newman team, EPC has an uphill climb.

GCM is the consensus favorite to win 2A and EPC must have big plays to have any chance.

Nonetheless, it is an honor to have three NUIC teams in the semifinals.

With an epic seven state titles in the last eight years, there is no doubt where the best small-school football in Illinois is played.

It’s true bluebloods as Forreston and Le-Win square off, as those two teams have four of the last five state championship trophies.

What Le-Win did in the suburbs to AC helped solidify that reputation for Chicagoans not familiar with the NUIC. I thought about doing a game

preview for the paper, but everyone pretty much knows what both Le-Win and Forreston has.

Congrats to NUIC volleyball for keeping on par with football, as Galena brought home the 2A runner-up trophy.

This stat is hard to fathom – after being tied 12-12 in the first semifinal game against Nashville, the Pirates went on a 38-4 run the rest of the way.

How does that happen in a state tournament?

I ran into former Oregon softball coach Jamie Revelle and she told me that she stepped down as coach because of the heavy work schedule of her husband Josh. That’s understandable for families of young children.

Last week, I mentioned how my dad got by with only one assistant coach in football for the whole school.

Something that needs to be mentioned is that coaching is so much more time consuming and complicated than it used to be.

For one thing, people didn’t create as many problems for coaches as they do now. Coaches used to be looked at as authority figures and unfortunately, that’s not the case as much anymore.

Two of these students have also been selected to receive the additional honor of being named as Andrew and Helen Cirksena Scholars.

She is studying Communication Sciences and Disorders in hopes of becoming a speech and language pathologist.

Her hope is to specialize as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner.

The Oregon Rotary Club Foundation program has been helping students for more than 30 years.

The program began in 1984 with one $500 scholarship being awarded.

Heather was issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Nov. 6 At 12:40 p.m., police responded to the 200 block of North Fourth Street where a 2011 GMC driven by Teri L. Ujcic, 50, of Mt. Morris, was struck by a deer. No citations were issued.

JOHN H. REMOUR

Abilene Sherron Bocker, precious baby girl of Winton and Bethany Bocker, was born into the arms of angels on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.

She joined her great-grandparents, Merle and Joanne Cornelius; great-grandfather, Ernest Borgmann; and great-grandmother, Judith Bocker in heaven.

Beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, and cousin; she will remain in our hearts forever.

Abilene will be cherished and missed by her parents Winton and Bethany Bocker, of Polo; siblings, Cadence and Lincoln; grandparents, Mark and Teresa Bocker, of Polo, and Denny and Valerie Borgmann, of Leaf River; several aunts and uncles, cousins, and great-grandparents.

Private funeral services were held at Zion Church in Freeport. Internment is private.

Christenson Funeral Home, Rockford, is assisting with arrangements. Memorials may be made to the family.

John Harry Remour, 88, of Oregon and formerly of Sycamore, died on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018 at Oregon Living & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1930 in Havana, Illinois, the son of Leslie and Justina “Jay” (Janssen) Remour.

He married Geraldine P. Davis (Leger) on Sept. 9, 1993 in Sycamore.

John was a veteran of the United States Army Security Agency as a repair person during the Korean War. He was employed by Rock River Valley Telephone Company, DeKalb Ogle Telephone Company, and Contel, retiring in 1983.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his time in Ontario, Canada.

In 1984 John started Remour Fishing Reel Service in Sycamore, which he owned and operated for more than 30 years.

He was a collector of fishing reels, lures and miscellaneous fishing equipment and gear.

For anyone who stopped at John’s shop, you always left with some of his knowledge and sportman’s wisdom.

John was a member of Oregon Masonic Lodge 420 where he served as a past master.

He was a life member of Oregon VFW Post 8739 and a member of the Sycamore Moose Lodge.

John is survived by his son, David (Talene) Remour, of Oregon; grandchildren, Joshua Remour and Sara (Frank) Rowe; great-granddaughters, Ella and Alyssa Rowe; step-sons, Johnnie (Angie) Davis and Bart Davis; and step-grandchildren, Nick and Taylor Davis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Geri; and brother, George Remour.

A memorial visitation was held on Nov. 12 at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon.

Interment with military honors of John’s cremated remains will be at a later date in Daysville Cemetery, Oregon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in John’s name may be made to the Activities Department of Oregon Living & Rehab Center or to Rock River Center, Oregon.

ESTHER E. FREY Esther E. Frey, 100, of Mt. Morris, died on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Esther was born on April 29, 1918 in Fresno County, California, the daughter of William H. and Johanna (Horn) Meyers.

She graduated from Caruthers Union High School in California; she earned a bachelor of arts degree in 1939 from La Verne College and she went on Bethany Theological Seminary receiving a masters of religious education in 1950.

Esther married Orlin Frederick Frey on July 22, 1950 in Raisin, California, and he preceded her in death on July 4, 1970.

Esther was a minister’s wife for 11 years; before and after that she taught school.

In Fresno County, California, she taught in one-room and in two-room schools, teaching various subjects in 6-8 grades during World War II. In Kansas and Illinois she taught high school English, the last 21 years in Dixon, retiring after 37 years.

For several years Esther did adjunct teaching for Sauk Valley Community College and Oregon Bible College.

Esther spent time in Zimbabwe and did volunteer work for the Adult Literacy Organization of Zimbabwe during that country’s first year of independence.

Esther has been in 48 of the 50 states, missing only Vermont and Louisiana; with her children she joined a Mennonite historical tour group to Switzerland, Holland, Austria, and Germany; she visited the Holy Land; and was on a English teachers’ study tour of England.

Esther served in both district and denominational work for the Church of the Brethren.

She did curriculum writing for children and youth, some for the Mennonite Church, and some for the Church of the Brethren.

Esther is survived by her children, Samuel V. (Susan E.) Frey, Golden, Colorado, and Mary Jo (Donald E.) Griffin, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Pamela Frey, Moundridge, Kansas; grandchildren, Kenneth (Rozalynn) Frey, Matthew (Cora Ogden) Frey, Jeremy Hegge, Daniel (Bethany) Griffin, Jessica (Matthew Hart) Griffin, Erica (Steve) Bell, James (Sara) Griffin, Kate (Sean) Triana, and Kristine (Chase Wearne) Frey; great-grandchildren, Cooper, Carter, Caris Frey; Lily Rae, Keaton, Porter Griffin; Colton, AshLee, Ryan, Briggs Griffin, Avalyn Henry; Erin, Emily Grace, Sadie Bell, Oliver Triana; and a sister, Eva M. Simmons, Parkville, Maryland.

Esther was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orlin; son, William O. Frey; and great-grandchild, Memphis Bree Griffin.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren. Refreshments and social time will be held on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Memorials have been established to the Brethren Disaster Ministries, Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren, and Serenity Hospice and Home.

PAUL N. HALVERSON Paul N. “Nick” Halverson, 75, lifelong Chana area resident, died on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2018 in Dixon Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

He was born on Nov. 27, 1942 in Rochelle, the son of Paul L. and Mary Ellen (Allison) Halverson.

He married Nancy Lemen on Oct. 4, 1969 in Jacksonville, Fla. Nick graduated from Rochelle High School in 1960 and received his bachelor of science degree from Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, in 1965.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving as a fighter pilot in the Vietnam War. Nick farmed in Chana, owned and operated Halverson Builders, and worked as a crop duster.

He was a member of Chana United Methodist Church, Rochelle VFW Post 3878, Ogle County Pilots’ Association and Byron Sportsman’s Club where he enjoyed trap shooting.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Halverson, of Chana; son, Todd (Michelle) Halverson, of Chana; daughters, Shannon (Dean) Harper, of Byron and Colleen (Mike) Gosnell, of Chana; and grandchildren, Lane and Brooke Halverson, Camryn, Savanna and Drew Harper, and Jaxxon Gosnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Ron Halverson.

Funeral services were held on Nov. 15 at Chana United Methodist Church with Pastor Chan Choi officiating.

Burial was at Lawnridge Cemetery, Rochelle. Arrangements were completed by Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon. A memorial fund has been established.
