AT LAST!! Black Hawk repairs begin

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Jubilation greeted the crew that arrived this week to finally take the first step toward the long-awaited repairs to Ogle County’s best-known landmark.

Workers from Brand Safway started erecting the scaffolding around the Black Hawk statue early Monday morning.

“Hallelujah!” was Jan Stilson’s simple response. Stilson formerly chaired the Black Hawk Restoration Team, a part of Oregon Together, which was formed almost two years ago to raise funds for the statue’s repairs and work with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Conservation Foundation to get the feat accomplished.

Oregon Together member Roger Cain was equally as enthusiastic.

“Fantastic and long overdue!” he said Tuesday. “Let’s pray for good weather.”

Devin Hill from Brand Safway said Tuesday that he expected the scaffolding would be in place by Friday, paving the way for Quality Restorations Inc., of Wood Dale, to begin the actual repair work on the surface of the 108-year-old concrete monument.

Cain said QRI has allotted six weeks for the work to be completed with an

extra week on either side for “miscellaneous.”

The statue remains encased in the black plastic QRI workers wrapped around it last fall to protect it from winter weather.

“It may be two weeks until we actually see the tarps dropped, hopefully sooner,” Cain said. “They will be working right up against fall weather but they like the cooler temperatures.”

QRI was originally expected to begin in June. The cold, wet weather somewhat delayed the start of the work.

Steve Ettinger, who heads up the ICF was scheduled to meet with the Black Hawk Art, Restoration & Development Committee, originally called the Black Hawk Restoration Team, on Wednesday to bring them up to date on the project.

The Eternal Indian, better known as Black Hawk, was created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1910 as a tribute to Native Americans, and is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Rock River at Lowden State Park, near Oregon.

Time and weather have significantly damaged the surface of the landmark, which was unveiled in 1911.

Because it stands in a state park, the statue is under the jurisdiction of the IDNR.

The statue has spent most of the last five years under layers of protective plastic to keep the ice, snow, and cold from doing more damage. It was unveiled briefly in the summer of 2018 before being wrapped again.

Frank and the late Cherron Rausa formed The Friends of the Black Hawk Statue Committee more than a decade ago and began raising money for the project, the total cost of which will approach $1 million.

State budget woes, including the lack of a capital bill for several years, sidetracked a promised $350,000 matching state grant, which was finally funded by the state legislature just over a year ago.

A fundraising effort headed up by the Black Hawk Restoration Team was successful in securing the final $225,000 needed for the project last fall, thanks to several large donations from area businesses and individuals.

Once the restoration is completed funds will still be needed for landscaping around the statue and for long-term maintenance.

Forty-five volunteers put on gloves and old shoes last Saturday morning to pick up trash from banks and islands of the Rock River.

Mother Nature did her part by providing clear skies and comfortable temperatures for the annual Oregon area Rock River Sweep.

Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department Director Steve Rypkema said volunteers on foot and in boats collected three small dump truck loads along the nine-mile stretch from Mud Creek Road to Castle Rock State Park.

Once the trash was collected and brought to the staging area at Kiwanis Park by the Oregon dam, volunteers sorted through it to separate out the recyclables.

Rypkema said the amount of trash collected was about the same as in previous years and about half of that can be recycled.

The event was sponsored by the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department, the Oregon Park District, White Pelican Canoe Rental, Oregon Together, American Rivers, and the Rock River Trail Initiative.

Forest preserve doubles size of Bald Hill Prairie Grant made 220-acre purchase possible The Byron Forest Preserve District has recently more than doubled the size of its Bald Hill Prairie Preserve thanks to an $837,600 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation.

The original 160-acre Bald Hill Prairie Preserve, 5502 N. Silver Creek Rd., northeast of Mt. Morris, was acquired in November of 2017 with the support of another $434,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation to protect the rare gravel hill prairie ecosystem.

This site has been known as Bald Hill to area residents for more than 150 years, and its unique steep gravel hill is named in the 1872 Ogle County Atlas.

The total size of this site is now 380 acres making it the third largest preserve in the Byron Forest Preserve District.

Of all the other nine Byron Forest Preserve District preserve sites, only the Jarrett Prairie Nature Preserve (641 acres) and Stephen J. and Deirdre Nardi Equine Prairie Preserve (557 acres) are larger.

The new land addition will permanently protect the gravel hill prairie and oak savannas located on the south slope of Bald Hill and provide additional open land to the east of the current preserve.

This hilly open prairie land provides important habitat for a variety of wildlife, most importantly for ground nesting birds.

Rare grassland bird species seen

The Byron Forest Preserve recently purchased the two parcels outlined in yellow to expand the Bald Hill Prairie Preserve outlined in green. on the site include large numbers of bobolinks and Eastern meadowlarks as well as Henslow’s sparrows, short eared owls, and northern harriers.

The preserve is also the home of the Big Tree Champion for the State of Illinois, a huge eastern cottonwood that is 28.5 feet in circumference and 122 feet tall.

The Byron Forest Preserve District purchased the 224-acre Richard Lenz Farm on Sept. 4 for a sale price of $1,396,000.

The existing Lenz farm house and 4.5 acres of land surrounding it will

be sold at public auction later this fall.

With the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation grant and money from the sale of farm house, it is estimated that the total cost to purchase the additional 220 acres will be approximately $1,270 per acre, or a total of $279,000, coming from Byron Forest Preserve District taxpayers.

“We are very thankful that the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation awarded us a second grant to purchase the rest of Bald Hill in order to protect this rare

natural land for future generations,” said Byron Forest Preserve District Executive Director Todd Tucker.

“Mr. Lenz was so impressed with the amount of visitors to Bald Hill and the conservation work being done by our Restoration Department that he offered to sell us his adjoining farm property in order to increase the size of the preserve.”

Since the Bald Hill Prairie Preserve opened to the public in 2018, it has become the second most visited preserve in the Byron Forest Preserve District.

People come to Bald Hill every day to see the Illinois Big Tree Champion and take in the amazing views.

It is a popular spot for area hikers, runners and bird watchers. The new land addition will allow for future expanded public parking areas and trails.

The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation was established in December of 1999 as an independent foundation with a $225 million endowment provided by Commonwealth Edison.

Their mission is to improve energy efficiency, advance the development and use of renewable energy resources, and protect natural areas and wildlife habitat in communities across Illinois.

Over the past 16 years, the foundation has provided financial support for clean energy investments in Illinois through a variety of programs.

To date, they have awarded more than 5,000 grants providing $258 million to Illinois nonprofit organizations, schools, municipalities and other local and state government agencies.

The grants support activities in every one of Illinois’ 102 counties.

Chana man faces residential burglary charges A man was arrested last week for burglarizing a home in Chana could be facing similar charges for incidents that occurred in Oregon.

Franklin T. Houston Jr., 21, of Chana, has been charged with residential burglary.

He was arrested by Ogle County Sheriff’s Police on Sept. 4.

The Oregon Police Department has forwarded its cases to the Ogle County State’s Attorney with a request for charges of residential burglary to be filed against Houston.

Houston is being held in the Ogle County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 18.

Disciples United Methodist Church, Mt. Morris will host a GriefShare Support Group, beginning Thursday, Sept. 26 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the Fireplace Room at the church, 102 Maple Ave. The group will meet every Thursday evening through Nov. 7, with a session called Surviving the Holidays.

County board chairman found dead in his home Kim Gouker had served as Ogle chairman since 2012

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecounrynews.com A longtime Ogle County official was found dead in his home Tuesday morning.

County board chairman Kim Gouker, 66, of Byron, was discovered by Byron police officers doing a welfare check.

Coroner Lou Finch said foul play is not suspected. No further details were available at press time as of Tuesday night.

Gouker was elected to his first term on the

county board in 1996 and has served as board chairman since December of 2012. He was instrumental in the planning and building of the Ogle County Judicial Center, the restoration of the historic Ogle County Courthouse, and the planning and building of the new Ogle County Jail that is currently under construction.

According to his Linked-In page, from 1971 to 1973 he attended Rock Valley College where he earned a two-year associate of arts degree and went on to study at Illinois State University, where he earned a bachelor of science in math, business and economics, according to his page.

The Republican board member owned an insurance, annuities and tax preparation business in Byron.

Cow Path led to Pine Hill mansion on Mix Street

Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places, and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Driving up Jackson Street toward the Pine Hill Inn location is my next Oregon footprint house.

William Stout built his own home at 709 Jackson Street in 1893, living there 61 years.

William was born in Oregon in 1859. William’s granddaughter Dorothy Borgman recalled living in this house.

Dorothy showed me a photo of the “Cow Path” (now Jackson Street) heading up the hill to the Pine Hill house built by Judd Mix on Mix Street.

Pine Hill, built in 1874, is a post Civil War mansion now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

After the Cow Path, a new road was installed, making it a popular place for the young people to sled down Jackson Street.

William’s father Daniel is buried at Riverside Cemetery along with his wife Mary Austin and their infant son, who was buried there in 1858, and 3-year-old daughter Addie, who passed away in 1867.

Mary Austin Stout’s father, Amos and mother Rachael are also interned at the Stout Plot.

To summarize this, William’s parents, his brother and sister, and his in-laws are buried at Riverside.

William and his son Leo served in the Illinois National Guard. His father Daniel served in the Civil War. The Illinois Civil War Detail Report shows his father Daniel joined Company G of the 74th Illinois U.S. Infantry in Rockford on Aug. 11, 1862. He was 29 years old, had black hair, gray eyes, entering with the rank of private. As mentioned earlier he is buried in the Riverside Cemetery.

William is one of the 101 men Capt. E. F. Dutcher, an attorney in Oregon, enlisted for Company G stationed at Camp Fuller in Rockford.

Dutcher is also buried at Riverside along with 17 Civil War veterans from this area.

The first city police station was located on the southwest corner of Fourth and Washington Streets.

It was located on the courthouse lawn just south of Iron Mike. This small octagon structure contained the police station at ground level and the community bandstand located above.

Previously I wrote in this paper, “At the turn of the century, Oregon’s Saturday night most people gravitated to the evening band concert located in the bandstand. The program usually consisted of the current Sousa marches and a cornet solo or two

“While the band marched on the upper level of the local police conducted their business on their first floor. Familiar faces in the station were Charlie Eyster, W. C. Stout, George Reiman and Ed

Jones.”

I also mentioned it would be great if this bandstand could be restored to provide music from the bandstand and provide tourist information from the old police station.

This bandstand would catch the eyes of everyone driving through Oregon. It is disappointing that such a colorful structure as the bandstand had to be torn down. Now when I drive by the footprint Stout House, I visualize the Cow Path in front of their house.

It also reminds me that the three Stouts served in the Civil War and the Illinois National Guard, and William and his father Daniel served as Oregon marshalls.

When I see the Daniel Stout gravestone at Riverside Cemetery I am reminded of the 17 Civil War vets buried there and that Daniel had black hair and gray eyes.

Our prayers continue to be with the farmers in our community as they prepare for the harvest.

God is our provider and protector. For His constant love, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Kent and Judy Nettz.

We had just a small group for church this morning. While we didn’t have any special music, our church family singing the hymn, “It is Well with My Soul” was quite moving.

I was so glad to be back with my church family after being gone for the last couple of weeks.

happening in our church as we prepare for adding flooring and tile to the rooms of our new building. God is even in the details.

John and Lisa Coffman recently returned from a wonderful trip to Alaska.

The Coffmans along with Lisa’s brother, Dave Lawrence and his wife, Shelly, from Virginia spent a week on land and a week at sea.

Their travels took them to Fairbanks, Denali National Park, and the Kenai Peninsula. While at sea, they cruised from Anchorage to Vancouver.

John and Lisa enjoyed seeing Mt. McKinley/Denali, glaciers, and wildlife, including bears, whales, sea lions, and moose.

On Saturday morning, I joined the crew at Hazelhurst to help in the office with many members of the Hopkins family.

For the most part, it was a beautiful day to attend the sale. There was a wide variety of items to choose from.

In the evening, John and Lisa Coffman hosted our annual fall reunion for our PEO Chapter DW. With nearly 40 sisters, spouses, and guests in attendance, everyone

taking away the readers rights.

Banned book week is celebrated every year in September. This year we will host our second annual banned book read out.

About the time I returned home this past Tuesday evening, my brother, Ben Bittinger, messaged me an invitation to dinner.

I gladly accepted and headed over to his house. Ben, his wife, Jo, and I had a wonderful dinner before I headed out for an evening of PEO. After dinner, I walked over to the Church of the Brethren for our regular meeting of our PEO Chapter DW. Hosted by Beth Wiegmann with help Betty Ebert, our sisters shared a lovely evening of visiting, dessert, and of course, PEO business.

Attending the meeting from the Pine Creek area were Vicki Hay, Beverly Coffman, Lisa Coffman, Maggie Henning, and Jean Cunningham.

Paula Faivre presented a program on CASA. Paula also provided information on our upcoming pecan sale.

I had the chance to visit with a very dear friend at the dinner on Saturday evening. My family has known Beverly and Richard Coffman since the late 1970s.

Beverly Coffman has provided me with encouragement in all things since we met.

While I was in school, she encouraged my love of music. When my mom and I faced the decision of college, she encouraged me to attend Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri.

When I decided to go back to school, she offered her loving, encouraging words once again.

I am so grateful for her kind words and gentle presence. When I consider all the events that had to happen for us to meet, I am amazed.

God’s planning is perfect. He has brought people into my life, just when I needed them.

God will take care of each of us.

Byron native exemplifies legacy of U.S. Navy Seabees

BY ALVIN PLEXICO NAVY OFFICE OF COMMUNITY OUTREACH “We Build, We Fight” has been the motto of the U. S. Navy’s Construction Force, known as the “Seabees,” for more than 75 years.

Constructionman Amanda Smith, a 2011 Byron High School graduate and native of Byron, builds and fights around the world as a member of naval construction battalion center located in Gulfport, Mississippi.

Smith is serving as a Navy equipment operator, who is responsible for driving the construction equipment and delivering the supplies for construction projects in support of Navy operations.

Smith credits her success in the Navy to many of the lessons learned growing up in Byron.

“You don’t always have to force yourself to fit in,” said Smith. “You can find your own niche.

So, be true to yourself.”

Building in austere environments can be a challenge. Fighting in harsh conditions can also be a challenge. Building in austere environments while fighting in harsh conditions takes a special kind of person with a great deal of perseverance and determination.

These are the kinds of people serving here at Gulfport, the home of the Atlantic Fleet Seabees.

These are the people who provide crucial support to Seabee units deployed around the world.

The jobs of many of today’s Seabees remained unchanged since World War II, when the Seabees paved the 10,000-mile road to victory for the allies in the Pacific and in Europe, according to Lara Godbille, director of the U. S. Navy Seabee Museum.

For more than 75 years Seabees have served in all American conflicts. They have also supported humanitarian efforts using their construction skills to help communities around the world.

A key element of the Navy the Nation needs is tied to the fact that America is a maritime nation, according to Navy officials, and that the nation’s

prosperity is tied to the ability to operate freely on the world’s oceans.

More than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water; 80 percent of the world’s population lives close to a coast; and 90 percent of all global trade by volume travels by sea.

“Our priorities center on people, capabilities and processes, and will be achieved by our focus on speed, value, results and partnerships,” said Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer.

“Readiness, lethality and modernization are the requirements driving these priorities.”

Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community and career, Smith is most proud of humanitarian efforts on the Northern Mariana Islands following a typhoon in 2018.

“The mission required a lot of determination to excel,” said Smith. “It was rewarding to give back their roadways. We offered them respect so the families could get back into their homes.”

Serving in the Navy is a continuing tradition of military service for Smith, who has military ties with family members who have previously served. Smith is honored to carry on that family tradition.

“My uncle Tom served in the Army, and my grandfather served in the Army during Vietnam,” said Smith. “My aunt also served in the Air Force.”

As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied upon assets, Smith and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs.

“Serving in the Navy offers structure, support and security, and gives me the chance to provide safety for my family,” added Smith. “I’m honored to protect my family and the world they live in.”

They were honored by locally for this state-wide honor during the last school year and received notice of their recognition this week.

“Meridian is exceptionally proud of the honorees and the work they do on behalf of our students and community,” said Superintendent P.J. Caposey.

cation annually sponsors Those Who Excel to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the state’s public and nonpublic elementary and secondary schools.

Excellence, Meritorious Service and Special Recognition awards are presented in seven categories: classroom teacher, school administrator/principal, student support personnel (licensed), educational service personnel (unlicensed), school board member/community volunteer; team, and early career educator.

Nomination materials are evaluated by a selection committee comprised of individuals who represent a variety of educational organizations.

Awards of Excellence winners in

the classroom teacher category are finalists for the Illinois Teacher of the Year.

Local school district leaders and members of school communities nominate candidates.

Meridian winners were in the following categories: • Michele McDevitt won an award of Recognition for work as a classroom teacher.

Build-A-Barn will hold a Spooktacular Horse Expo on Saturday, Oct. 12 and Sunday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Ogle County Fairgrounds, 1440 N. Limekiln Rd., Oregon.

By all accounts, the “The Last Time” was a resounding success.

One of the organizers, 1979 Sterling High graduate and now Atlanta pilot and instructor Dan Gryder, is hoping to create another, larger, more diverse aviation show next year.

To that end, he will meet with members of the Whiteside County Airport Board on Sept. 14 at the airport, and he is inviting any and all other interested parties – aviation, business, tourism and civic leaders, food and other vendors, and members of the public who would like to see such an event – to attend and

He wants to be clear: He does not want to duplicate “The Last Time.”

“Rather, I would invite 4 or 5 warbird-type aircraft from many different categories with a sum total of around 50 varying unique and rare aircraft in total,” he said in the letter.

The type of aircraft that would be at the event would include DC-3/ C-47s, B-25s, B-17s, T-28s, T-6s, and F4-Us.

Oregon foundry cast the Michael Jordan statue that stands at the United Center in Chicago Eagle’s Nest Art Group will begin its program year on Saturday, Sept. 21 with a tour of Art Casting of Illinois, 5 Madison St., Oregon.

The tour begins at 2 p.m. Owners Harry and Karly Spell will lead the tour and discuss the workings of their bronze foundry which specializes in fine art sculpture.

One of the most significant projects cast

by the foundry was the Michael Jordon statue that was installed outside the United Center in Chicago.

The statue is the work of artists Julie Rotblatt Amray and Omri Amray of Timeless Creations in Chicago.

The tour also includes the Adagio Fine Arts Gallery, which is a part of the casting facility.

Among the many services offered at Art Casting of Illinois are fabrication, prototyping, bronze work, restoration, conservation, and consulting.

The Oregon Rotary Club will host a fundraiser, Fall Fun of the River, on Sunday, Sept. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. on the deck at Maxson’s Riverside Restaurant.

The community is invited to attend the event which will offer riverboat rides, beverages, food, a cash bar, and music.

The proceeds will be used by the club for the Operation Warm project, which provides coats for Oregon

Elementary School students, scholarships, and other activities to support the community.

Tickets are $20 per person and may be purchased from Rotary Club members or at the Oregon Park District.

Lunch on the deck will include sandwiches, salads, chips, and desserts.

Live music will be provided by J. T. Wells.

Two electronics recycling events are set for September

Collections for local food pantries will also be part of the Sept. 14 & 27 events The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department will hold two residential electronics recycling events in September. Â These events will be held on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Friday, Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the County Annex Building,909 Pines Rd., Oregon. Â In addition to electronics, the OCSWMD will also be accepting donations of non-perishable food items for county food pantries at both of these events.

The OCSWMD is averaging 230 vehicles served during 2019 electronic recycling events. Â If each vehicle donated one non-perishable food item the OCSWMD will have a lot of food to deliver to the needy. A 14-yard touchdown run from quarterback Chad Gerig gave the Cardinals the lead with just over four minutes left in the game. The Cardinals then took a safety when their offense stalled late in the game.

The Cardinals’ defense clamped down late stopping a Byron drive to end Byron’s 28-game BNC winning streak.

Byron quarterback Ben Carlson injured his ankle early in last week’s 50-3 win over Winnebago, but started and played the entire game.

He finished just 2-for-11 passing for 24 yards with an interception, and he rushed for 50 yards on nine carries as well. Isaac Stickler, went 65 yards on Byron’s second offensive play of the game, giving the Tigers a 7-0 lead.

Stickler finished with 136 yards and both TDs for Byron on the ground.

Forreston blows out Galena 52-9

The Genoa-Kingston Cogs burned through the Wing-T playbook in their 45-0 victory over the Oregon Hawks on Sept. 6.

“Sitting down with some guys on staff, we just thought that we needed to throw some wrinkles in,” Cogs coach Chad Wilmarth said. “The boys have done a really nice job and really dedicated themselves. We’re really proud of them.”

The Cogs (2-0,1-0 in Big Northern Conference) abandoned their traditional run-heavy offense to the tune of three first-half touchdown passes for quarterback Justin Peters.

Already up 13-0, Peters flipped an 8-yard pass to Jake Stojan with 1:12 left in the first for his first score of the game.

After Peters set the offense up with a 46-yard punt return, he lofted another touchdown pass to Logan Kribs in the corner of the end zone to put the Cogs up 25-0 with 6:11 left in the half.

Peters finished the game a perfect 5 for 5 with 114 yards through the air.

Two plays later, Connor Schwichtenberg picked off a Ryker Finch pass and galloped into the end zone to push the Cogs’ lead to 31-0.

The Cogs have outscored their two opponents 85-0 in the first two games.

Peters finished off the scoring in the first half with a touchdown pass to Chris Kleba from 20 yards out, also running in a 2-pt. conversion to push the halftime lead to 39-0.

The Hawks (0-2, 0-2) couldn’t get much of anything going all night.

On offense, the Hawks only managed to get three first downs in the game. The only big play on offense came midway in the third quarter.

Finch hit Garret Moser for a 52-yard pass inside the Cogs 20 yard line.

“Second half I thought we played with better effort,” Hawks’ coach Nick Schneiderman said. “We still have to get better at our basics on offense and defense.”

The Hawks couldn’t get the ball into the end zone as Bennett Franson picked off Finch three plays later.

“We’ve got to keep learning,” Schneiderman said. “They’ve had the biggest transition in the last 15 months. We’ve got a new offense.

He felt he could have done better; a side cramp bothered him as he went down the course’s final hill.

much security presence at sporting events. Fans would occasionally get rowdy, with the most outrageous behavior tearing down goal posts.

It was good clean fun and everyone behaved. With 170 security personnel scattered throughout the field, gates and stadium, it is a different environment now.

“We look at ourselves like the TSA,” Standriff said. “We don’t want fans throwing things, jumping on the field, fighting or having alcohol.”

Because of legal issues and the threat of someone becoming uncorked, safety has become such a huge part of everyday existence.

As I watched the behinds-the-scenes action at Rice-Eccles, it dawned on me that more preparation goes into that than what the coaches do in making up game plans.

“I’ve known for four months the exact date and game time,” said Steve Fyne, a university administrator. “My preparation starts then.

First and foremost, is the safety of the patrons. The only thing that matches a football game are the Rolling Stones and U2 concerts we’ve had here.”

The stadium was built in 1998 in anticipation of the 2002 Winter Olympics that Salt Lake hosted, with Rice-Eccles serving as site for opening and closing ceremonies.

“By far, that was our largest undertaking,” said Fyne in his 39th year at the school.

According to Fyne, Utah will have 1,300-1,400 staff, including police, fire and ambulance on hand for the NIU game.

Even with all the concerns for safety, there is an inherent beauty of being at a college football stadium, as evidenced by NIU athletic director Sean Frazier sitting on the sidelines before the game with a view of the Wasatch Mountains as his backdrop. It was Frazier who orchestrated NIU’s second-ever trip to a PAC-12 school.

“It was good old-fashioned hog work. It’s hard to do in the modern era,” he said. “Hats off to Utah for accepting the challenge.”

A football sideline would not be complete with one of the more common figures and one that universities royally court. That is the alumni donor. That came in the form of Dave Turner, a former resident of Dixon.

Turner flew with the team on the charted flight, stayed at the hotel with them and will be watching the game with Frazier in the AD’s private box. After his wife died, Turner started buying tickets to NIU sporting contests and contributing to scholarship endowments.

“I’d much rather be here than at a pro game,” Turner said.

As his contributions increased, so

too did his perks. That is the nature of college athletics, especially with millions and millions of dollars funneled in by generous alumni.

Colleges are no different than high schools. There always seems to be a greater interest in sports than academics.

With 21-point favorite Utah winning 35-17, that did not diminish the experience of the small group of Huskie fans that made the trip to Salt Lake, including ‘74 grad Tom Libert of Cary.

“I came to the game when I was student and still enjoy it,” he said, while tailgating at an NIU sponsored tent. “I don’t understand why students at Northern don’t come to games that much.”

As fans filed out of the stadium and the large semi with the NIU logo proudly affixed to it loaded up all the football gear for the 1,300-mile trip back on I-80 to DeKalb, it reminded me of the Jackson Browne song with the lyrics: “Now the seats are all empty, let the roadies take the stage, pack it up and tear it down.”

The spectacle that is college football is over for now, but the show will play again next week.

t is a beautiful sun-kissed day in Salt Lake City, Utah where the NIU Huskies are set to take on the nationally ranked University of Utah football team.

It is a step up from trips to MAC schools and a side benefit of being a D-1 athlete.

“Coming from tiny Prophetstown, it’s a treat for me to play at places like Ford Field, Florida State, Nebraska and my favorite of all – Kinnick Stadium in Iowa,” said DL Jack Heflin, a huge Iowa fan. “My first plane ride was going to Lincoln for the Nebraska game.”

As the buses carrying the team from its downtown hotel roll into Rice-Eccles Stadium, there are representatives on hand to greet every member of the contingent.

“It’s our ambassador program,” explains one of friendly greeters, Rex Thornton. “It’s modeled after what they do at Notre Dame. Utah played there a few years ago and from the minute we parked our car, they told us it was an honor to have us. We’ve never been treated so well at a game and my wife said we had to do it at Utah.”

Thus started a tradition in which Utah has close to 100 volunteers greeting players and fans alike, making them feel at home and also setting a tone for sportsmanship.

Maybe that is something high school should consider, as the IHSA looks for a ways to encourage a positive attitude at games.

It is a different era at sporting events now than decades ago, as fellow 60-year old Scott Standriff and I discussed while watching the Huskies and Utes warm up.

Standriff is a supervisor for Centennial Management Group, an outfit contracted by the University to provide security for the game.

AOP 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run is Sunday, Oct. 6 Sign up now for this family, fun event The 14th Annual Autumn on Parade 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run is set for Sunday, Oct. 6.

“Spread the word and come join us for another spectacular run, and then stick around town for the other activities offered by the Autumn on Parade Festival and parade,” said Angela Mahoney, 5K chairman.

One-mile runners will begin the day at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K participants at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Registration for the 1 Mile Fun Run is $10.

“Again this year, all participants will receive an Autumn on Parade 1 Mile Fun Run silicone wristband. To be guaranteed a shirt, please register no later than Sept. 22,” Mahoney said. “As for the 5K, all the same amenities that race goers have come to love will be available again.

Music, premium long-sleeve tech shirts, post-race food, awards to 1st, 2nd, 3rd in 16 different age groups, overall awards, chip timing by Real Timing, Inc., and post-race massages provided by Alpine Chiropractic and Natural Medicine, PC are the amenities.

The 2019 5K course has been altered due to construction at Oregon Park West. A new route will be determined soon and will available at www.autumnonparade.org.

Strollers will be allowed on the race course, but must start after all runners. No pets, bicycles, or scooters allowed on the course.

“Back again this year is the 5K Team Challenge, so grab your co-workers, friends, or family and sign up,” Mahoney said. “Teams can be a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 15 per team. The top four race times for each team are added together and the fastest team wins a first place plaque.”

Participants may use one of the three registration options to sign up for the event: online, mail in form, or race day.

Again this year, Rockford Road Runners, Rockford Wildcat and Rock River Road Runners receive a 10% discount when registering online.

Pre-registration by mail will be offered for forms received by Sept.

22 for a fee of $20 for 5K individual and $18/registrant for the 5K Corporate Challenge.

Esther E. Buskohl, 88, of Mt. Morris, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Esther was born on Feb. 7, 1931 in German Valley, the daughter of John R. and Dolly J. (Smith) Baal.

She graduated from Leaf River High School.

Esther married Marvin Buskohl in Leaf River on Feb. 14, 1948. He preceded her in death in January of 1997.

She was a data processing coordinator for Kable News Company, Mt. Morris, and the Farm Bureau and Farm Management in Freeport, retiring in 1985.

Aside from her Kable News career, Esther was a devoted wife and mother.

She and Marvin farmed in the rural

Out of necessity and then as a hobby, Esther was a dedicated gardener who canned and froze many quarts of vegetables.

While doing all of this, Esther became a wellknown artist who shared her skills with various organizations and at Kable News.

Together Marvin and Esther raised horses and mules, which they shared with the community in parades and other exhibitions.

This inspired her to write her first book, “Honey, A Little Brown Mule.”

Other books followed along with teaching classes in writing.

In 1966, Bill married Nancy Wills, of Davis Junction, and their son, William Thomas Hay Jr., was born in 1970.

The following year, Bill, Nancy, and young Bill moved to their “new” homestead, HAY ACRES, on South Chana Road.

Bill and Nancy were active in the Chana community and were members of the Rockin’ Ride Riders horse riding club.

Bill was also a volunteer member of the Ogle County Mounted Patrol.

In 1985, at age 60, Bill was elected Pine Rock Township Road Commissioner and served 16 years before retiring in 2001.

In retirement, Bill remained active in the Chana community.

Surviving Bill are his loving family, wife, Nancy; daughters, Diana Dillman, Rockford, Grace Neie, San Antonio, Texas; son, Bill Hay (Mindi), Janesville, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Andrew Dillman, Boca Raton, Florida, Juli Dillman Melanson (Tom), Fulshear, Texas, Nick Maddern (Gayla), Monument, Colora-

do, Andrew Hay, Megan Hay, Bailey and Kadyn, Janesville, Wisconsin; and great-grandchildren, Amber Maddern, Sean Dillman and Alexandar Melanson; plus many, much-loved nieces, nephews, and friends, both near and far.

One of Bill’s most-often used quotes was “Any job worth doing is worth doing right!”

Those who knew Bill would say – for his community and for his family – he did his job RIGHT. Or, in words quoting his World War II U.S. Navy Chief, “Well done, sailor!”

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Sept. 2 Kevin A. Nichols, 32, of Hampshire, was issued a citation at 11:35 a.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred at the intersection of Daysville Road and East Washington Street.

Buffi Jo Langley, 43, of Sterling, was issued a citation at 4:30 p.m. for improper lane usage. This violation occurred in the 400 block of Gale Street.

Sept. 3 At approximately 2 p.m., police took a report of a hit and run that had occurred in the 300 block of North 7th Street at some point between 8/8/19 and 9/3/19 where an unknown vehicle struck a 1991 Toyota belonging to Penny J. Ingalls, 44, of Oregon. Anyone having any information regarding this incident, please contact the Oregon Police Department at 815-732-2162.

Elizabeth M. Schick, 33, of Oregon, was arrested at 8:54 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on an uninsured motor vehicle charge. Schick was transported to the Ogle County jail from the 100 block of S. 3rd Street.

Sept. 5 At 4:53 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Washington and N. 5th Street involving a 2004 Jeep driven by Haylie

A. Diehl, 18, of Oregon, and a 1999 Dodge driven by Dakota D. Stone, 18, of Milledgeville. No citations were issued.

Tyrell J. Taylor, 31, of Rockford, was arrested at 7:25 p.m. on an outstanding Rock Island warrant for failure to appear.

Taylor was also issued citations for driving while license revoked, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, no valid registration, drivers view impaired by defective windshield, and illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver. Taylor was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Sept. 6 At 1:54 a.m., police checked on a vehicle in the parking lot of the Jay’s Drive-in restaurant located at 107 W. Washington Street resulting in the arrest of Jessica L. Gierut, 35, of Rockford, for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Gierut was also issued citations for driving while license revoked, illegal transportation of alcohol, leaving the scene of an accident with damage to the vehicle, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Gierut was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Lesa L. Fenton, 51, of Oregon, was arrested at 2:59 p.m. on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a domestic battery charge. Fenton was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a peace officer. Fenton was issued a civil citation for possession of cannabis not more than 10 grams and a civil citation for possession of drug paraphernalia. Fenton was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 900 block of Madison Street.

Lucas D. Pauley, 21, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 10:15 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred at the 4th and Washington Streets intersection.

Leticia Castillas, 43, of Rockford, was issued citations at 6:47 p.m. for violation of the tinted front side windows law, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Presley A. Paolucci, 20, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 7:25 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

This violation occurred in the 400 block of Gale Street.

Eric B. Hughes, 29, of Rockford, was arrested at 9:45 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Hughes was transported to the Ogle County jail. This violation occurred in the 500 block of Monroe Street.

Sept. 8 Jason N. Long, 26, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 1:15 a.m. for not having a valid driver’s license. A passenger in Long’s vehicle, Charlotte M. Hinds, 25, of Mt. Morris, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a traffic offense. These violations occurred at the 5th and Monroe Street intersection.

Robert C. Puckett, 23, of Janesville, Wisconsin, was arrested at 3:54 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license, improper lane usage, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. A passenger in Puckett’s vehicle, Kaitllyn V. Spott, 20, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was also arrested for two counts of possession of a controlled substance more than 15 grams. Spott was also issued a civil citation for possession of drug paraphernalia. Both Puckett and Spott were transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Bryton T. P. Thompson, 23, of Sterling, was arrested at 7:39 p.m. on an outstanding Whiteside County warrant for obstructing a court order. Thompson was issued citations for no valid driver’s license and operating an uninsured motor vehicle; Thompson was also issued civil citations for possession of cannabis less than ten grams and possession of drug paraphernalia. Thompson was transported to the Ole County Jail. These violations occurred in the 400 block of N. 6th Street.
