Ninety-one receive diplomas on May 26

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In its usually prompt and efficient commencement ceremony, the Oregon School District granted diplomas to 91 graduating seniors on May 26.

“They are the ultimate example of our district’s Four Pillars of academics, service, achievement and leadership,” said OHS Principal Heidi Deininger.

Deininger acknowledged the myriad of honors the class has received, including student grade point averages, National Honor Society, entering the Armed Forces and ROTC, Silver Service Award for a cumulative 13,116 hours of community service and even blood donations.

This is besides the roughly $600,000 in scholarships.

Of the 91 seniors, 30 of them met the criteria in one of more of these categories.

In keeping with the dignity of the occasion, Deininger had them stand collectively by their seats to be recognized, instead of bringing each student to the stage.

That is part of the OCUSD philosophy of conducting a graduation. They recognize graduation as a formal ceremony and discourage whistling, applauding and otherwise recognizing individuals.

Lora Stevens McKee gave a brief commencement address, while the senior reflections were done by Isabelle Nelson and Christina Tranchina.

“We have experienced highs and lows that got us where we are now – the most important day of our lives,” said Tranchina, who had a enthusiastic support of family in the front row of seats at the Blackhawk Center.

One drawback to the ceremony was a sound system that made it difficult for the large crowd to hear the various speakers.

In a new tradition, the 2019 class selected as its guest speaker a member of the OCUSD staff that influenced them.

Sixth-grade teacher Nate Rogers was this year’s choice.

“I’m impressed and amazed from the growth since they were 11-12 year olds,” said Rogers, a 1997 OHS grad himself.

“When we had you in sixth grade, we could tell the whole class had a great bond.”

After Superintendent Tom Mahoney and the school board presented the class and handed out diplomas, senior president Olivia Stafford directed the time-honored tradition of the turning the tassel from right to left, signifying one has received their diploma.

Seventeen performers to liven up front porches Music of all kinds will be featured at the third annual Encore! PorchFest Mt. Morris on Saturday, June 8.

PorchFest is the ultimate grassroots community music festival.

After years of working at the family business, Mike Mullarkey now has a place of his own.

Mullarkey, 40, of Freeport, opened Mullarkey’s Bar and Grill two weeks ago at 12 W. Main St., Mt. Morris, in a space previously occupied by Barcade.

Mullarkey bought the 2,600-squarefoot building from local bar owners Dave and Maggie Johnson four weeks ago and is in the process of putting his own twist to a place, which served as a bar and an arcade.

“I met a lot of people from Mt. Morris and really like everyone here, and the space here gives us a lot of opportunity,” he said.

Mullarkey worked at Ridott Corners Tavern in Ridott, east of Freeport, for 19 years.

That place prides itself on its burgers, and Mullarkey plans to bring a little of Ridott down to Mt. Morris when he gets a kitchen set up.

The current setup will change over the course of the next six months, Mullarkey said.

He also plans to build a new U-shaped bar, and arrange for northern Illinois breweries, such as Generations in Freeport and Wishful Acres in Lena, to serve their products in the bar’s taps.

Mullarkey sticks to a basic business motto: Keep it simple. That’s what made Ridott Corners into a popular place in northern Illinois, with just burgers on its menu.

“We want to make sure everything’s in the right spot before we do anything,” Mullarkey said. “Less is more sometimes. If you got less on your menu, but everything’s good, that speaks for itself.”

Folks entering the bar on Sunday walked right onto a wood floor music stage where J.T. Wells, owner of the Chile Pepper Bar and Grill in Oregon, played songs on his acoustic guitar.

Some of the games include the NFL 2-Minute Drill football toss, a pair of Ice Ball skee ball games, Big Buck Hunters, Fast and the Furious Super Bikes, and a Playboy pinball machine. Pool tables and darts also are available.

Patrons can watch sports, and just about anything else, on one of 13 TVs that Mullarkey plans to put up throughout the bar.

“If you’re missing something on TV, it’s your own fault,” Mullarkey

said. “There are lots of opportunities to watch the Cubbies, Bears and local sports.”

A kitchen with a few hot grill items, including Ridott’s burgers, is in the planning stages.

Meanwhile, Mullarkey sought out the NorthSide BarbaQ food truck, of Shannon, to serve pulled pork, brisket sandwiches, chicken wings and sliders, and macaroni and cheese.

NorthSide owners Aaron and Katie VanRaalte plan to be on site for about six months, in addition to working at stops in Byron, Forres-

ton and Oregon.

“We’re from this area, and we want to continue to serve this area,” said Aaron, 24, of Shannon. “Mike came to me, offered this, and I decided that I might as well go for it.”

Mullarkey said he had a terrific turnout for the opening weekend, and hopes it keeps going.

“Everything’s been going great so far,” Mullarkey said. “The community’s been great to us, and we look forward to hosting more events and give them something they can call their own.”

Participants can join Byron Forest Preserve District Executive Director, Todd Tucker, Superintendent of Land Management, Russell Brunner and Superintendent of Education, Mark Herman along with other area plant experts for a walking tour of the Bald Hill Prairie Preserve.

“This popular new preserve contains

several endangered prairie plants species, recently restored oak savannas, and the Big Tree Champion for the State of Illinois,” said Herman.

“Bald Hill is also home to many nesting grassland birds such as Bobolinks, Eastern Meadowlarks, and Short-eared Owls.

“This walk will involve moderate hiking with a few steep hills. The views

from the top of Bald Hill are stunning,” Herman said.

No advance registration is required.

Participants should meet at the Bald Hill Prairie Preserve parking lot and dress for the weather.

We may not always understand how God will answer our prayers.

We only need to know He will answer them.

For the faithfulness of a loving Father, we are truly thankful. God is good.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Jean Cunningham.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our group of children, Katelyn, Laura, Harper, and Amelia.

Deb Ohlwine was our pianist for the morning, sharing her talents through beautiful music.

This past Monday evening, I traveled with the Hopkins family to the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates for the high school graduation of Theresa Hopkins.

Theresa graduated with academic honors from Fremd High School.

Our group enjoyed a night of fun conversation on the drive there and back.

We were able to visit with Theresa after the ceremony. She plans to attend college in Arizona next fall.

This was the first of three high

school graduations for the Hopkins clan.

Traveling for the evening’s activities were grandparents, Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins, Deb Ohlwine, Katie Pfundstein, John Hopkins, and Ellen and Justin Rahn.

We met Theresa’s dad, Mike Hopkins, and his wife, Rena, at the ceremony.

On Tuesday evening, I attended our regular PEO Chapter DW meeting at the home of Linda Poole.

I was so glad to visit with my sisters after a long absence.

Attending the meeting from Pine Creek were Maggie Henning, Betty Hare, Jean Cunningham, Vicki Hay, Beverly Coffman, and our president Lisa Coffman.

This past Saturday evening, Brian Toms and I went for a visit that included a movie and dinner at a restaurant in Dixon.

We haven’t had a chance to chat so it was nice to visit and enjoy a night out with this life-long friend.

After church, I headed over to the Polo Community High School for the graduation ceremony for the class of 2019.

I joined my brother, Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, their son, Garrett, and many family and friends to wish all the best to Hayden Bittinger on his graduation.

Hayden and his best friend, Kyle Brown, gave the opening remarks for the ceremony. Both graduates plan on attending the University of Wisconsin in Platteville this fall.

Kelsey Horton, who was a part of my Sunday School class since she was a young girl, also graduated today.

Kelsey is attending college in Minnesota this fall to pursue a career in the medical field.

This class was filled with talented actors, musicians, and athletes.

Lane Hopkins, son of John and Susan Hopkins, and grandson of Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins, addressed the graduates as the valedictorian of the class. He plans to leave for the Marines later this year.

Oregon High School also held their ceremony this afternoon.

Jim and Nancy Hopkins attended the ceremony with family and friends of their granddaughter, Abigail Hopkins, daughter of Jim and Dana Hopkins.

Congratulations to all of the area graduates! Our prayers are with you as you head out on your next adventure.

As the graduates prepare for their new beginning, I am reminded that each day, we have a new chance to make a difference.

Each day is a new beginning to encourage one another and share kindness with those we meet.

When we carry God’s love with us, we have the overwhelming urge to share it with everyone.

This new day can be the day to learn about God’s love for you. I hope to continue to share His message of love with each of you.

My continued hope is that each of you will be filled with the love of God. Please join us next Sunday at our earlier worship time of 10 a.m.

SPECIAL EVENT Summer Daze kicks off May 31 ​An Antique Tractor and Engine Show kicks off the three-day Leaf River Summer Daze festival on Friday, May 31 along with a tractor rodeo at 6 p.m. at the field behind the River Valley Complex.

Numerous food booths will be open, as well as the Lions stand serving hamburgers, hot dogs, and bratwurst sandwiches.

The Grass Attack bluegrass band will play from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Central States Fireworks will provide the fireworks show at dusk.

The Forreston FFA Alumni will host its truck and tractor pull on Saturday. The pulls begin at noon, and will feature classes for antique tractors, farm tractors, trucks, and Badger State Pullers.

The Leaf River Firemen will serve breakfast Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the River Valley Complex.

The Lions Car Show begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. in the parking lot south of the Bertolet Memorial Library.

The Merry Martha Club will again have a quilt raffle.

Outdoors activities include crafts, a tugof-war contest over a mud pit, a greased pig contest, and a pie eating contest for all ages.

The Mt. Morris Moose food truck will be there to serve meals and be sure to get some homemade ice cream.

The festival will continue on Sunday.

Let Freedom Sing rehearsals begin June 12

Kable Band Concerts begin June 12 at band shell The Mt. Morris Kable Concert Band begins its summer season of Wednesday night concerts on Wednesday, June 12.

Concerts will be performed every Wednesday night through July 31, at 7:30 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris. Conducting the band is Andy Eckardt.

2019 marks the 122nd year of Kable band concerts.

The band plays a variety of music, from rousing marches, Broadway show tunes, and classic band numbers Special soloists are featured each concert.

The band also performs a patriotic concert at the DLR Junior High field, on Thursday, July 4, prior to the fireworks display.

Benches are available, or bring lawn chairs. Ice cream and pie socials served by local organizations begin at 7 p.m. just before the weekly concerts.

The seventh annual Community Youth Choir will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, June 12 at 6:30 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church, 308 E. Brayton Rd., Mt. Morris.

Youth who have finished kindergarten and up are invited to sing several patriotic songs with the Kable Band at its July 3 program at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

to 7:15 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 12, 19, 26 with a final rehearsal with the band on Monday, July 1 at the Mt. Morris Senior Center.

Each youth who is registered by Thursday, June 13 will receive a free Let Freedom Sing T-shirt.

Morings to mark 50th anniversary

Four awarded Stillman Bank scholarships

Daryl and Nina Moring, of Forreston, will celebrate their golden anniversary on May 29.

Daryl Moring and Nina Brown were married on May 29, 1969 at the Elkhorn “Brick” United Methodist Church, rural Polo.

They have three sons, Keith (Connie), of Elgin; Dale (Sondra), of Lugoff, South Carolina; and Brian (Leanne), of Lakeville, Minnesota.

They also have six grandchildren, Christian (Abigail), Kyle, Dylon, Austin, and Kendall.

The couple will celebrate their 50 years with family at a later date.

Four area high school seniors, who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine, have been named winners of Stillman Bank’s 2019 Eickman Scholarship.

The 2019 recipients are Katelyn Byerley, Oregon High School; Ally Abel, Byron High School; Olivia Kerr, Stillman Valley High School; and Abby Ally Abel Lundquist, Rochelle Township High School.

Each student received a $1,900 scholarship.

Now in its 24th year, the scholarship fund was established by former Stillman Bank President, William E. Eickman as a way to give back to the Ogle County community.

Eickman was always grateful to the people of Ogle County for their support, recognizing Katelyn Byerley that they were the reason for the bank’s success since 1882.

The scholarship is available to high school seniors attending school in Byron, Oregon, Rochelle and Stillman Valley.

The fund is designed to award a scholarship, not less than $1,500, to one recipient from each of these four communities.

Each year, committees review all of the applications Olivia Kerr that are submitted, and from this process, finalists from each school are selected for personal interviews with the review committees.

“The Eickman Scholarship is just one of the ways Stillman Bank invests in the potential of students within our local communities,” said David Bogner, Stillman Bank Vice President and Trust Officer. “This is a fantastic opportunity for high Abby Lundquist school students that are looking to further their education within the medical field.”

Any high school senior at Byron, Oregon, Rochelle, or Stillman Valley High Schools who is interested in applying for the Eickman Scholarship is encouraged to inquire with their guidance counselor.

Application forms are available from each school’s respective counseling office and must be submitted by the assigned deadline.

A copy of the student’s high school transcript and proof of acceptance at an accredited college or university must be attached to the application.

Mt. Morris resident earns prize for project at Bradley University For her senior capstone project at Bradley University, Peoria, Kristin Drew, of Mt. Morris, and her classmates formed MK PR public relations agency with a goal to address the lack of youth participation in Peoria neighborhood associations.

This goal was decided upon after discovering that of the 119 active Peoria neighborhood associations, no members were under the age of 21 as of January of 2019; the majority of members are older than 30.

Teachers receive Leadership Awards in education The Illinois Principal’s Association Northwest Region has chosen Cassie Jennings, of Byron, and Stephanie White, of Rochelle, as recipients of the 2019 Leadership Awards for recognition of outstanding achievements in their educational practice.

The IPA Northwest Region consists of six counties and more than 200 schools.

This year, Jennings was one of four teachers to receive an award in the region, and White was the only Certified Support Staff selected in the region.

Both are employed with Ogle County Educational Cooperative and work at Chana Education Center.

This year, Chana Education Center was the only school in the region to have two staff members selected to receive awards.

Jennings has been teaching PE and in the Challenge Regional Safe Schools Program at Chana for three years.

In her time with the school she has transformed the physical education program to focus on physical, social, and emotional health.

She includes fitness, yoga, health, and mindfulness exercises to support emotional self-regulation with students.

Jennings provides classroom

teachers with strategies to provide appropriate movement opportunities for students to help when they need to energize or calm to be ready to learn.

She earned grants for the school to establish a fitness room in the building that students utilize for gym time, and also when they need regulation breaks.

White has been the school social worker at Chana for six years.

She serves an integral role in providing social and emotional supports for students.

White has created partnerships with several area mental health agencies to host counseling services inside the school building, as well as becoming a certified Trauma Informed trainer.

She led the transformation of Chana in becoming centered in trauma-informed practices.

White provides training to area schools and agencies on understanding how Adverse Childhood Experiences can affect child brain and social development, which impacts their abilities to perform in schools and develop relationships with others.

She also supports students in their future planning by helping them make connections with potential future employment opportunities and colleges.

SPECIAL EVENTS Polo Rehab to sponsor moonlight golf outing Polo Rehabilitation & Health Care Center will host moonlight golf on Saturday, June 8 at Sunset Golf Club, Mt. Morris.

Tee time is at 5 p.m.

The fee of $50 per golfer includes 18 holes of golf, dinner, one lighted ball for nighttime holes, and a cart.

All proceeds will go to the resident enrichment fund that helps supply needed items.

Paddle & Picnic trips offered on the Rock River The Oregon Park District and White Pelican have teamed up to offer the Paddle & Picnic for all ages.

Participants can park and launch at Kiwanis Park above the dam in Oregon and take a leisurely float to Castle Rock

“From there, take some time to enjoy your lunch and play by the water, and a shuttle will come around to bring you back to where you parked,” said Tina Ketter, superintendent of recreation.

“Pack some sandwiches, chips, cold beverages and enjoy a relaxing afternoon on the river!”

Dear Editor, When a tragedy occurs, there are many reactions that are considered “common and normal” for those left behind to cope.

Shock and disbelief, confusion, anger, numbness and fear, guilt and blame are just a few of these responses.

Since Maggie and Amos Meyer were killed on Oct. 16, 2016, these feelings and more have been experienced by their many loved ones who remain hopeful that their questions of what happened that night will one day be answered and justice will be served.

While they wait, these individuals continue to strive to ensure that the legacy of Maggie and Amos be more than one of tragic ending, and instead speak to the life of kindness, service to others, and gratitude that they both lived.

On April 27, the third annual Infinity Run and Family Event, held in memory of Maggie and Amos, served this purpose.

Despite a brutal late-April snowstorm, hundreds of participants still showed up and shared in celebrating the lives of Maggie and Amos.

Runners and walkers fought through snow, sleet, and ice to compete in the 5k and 1 mile run/walk events.

Children lined up in the Kid’s Zone for free games of Plinko, Bozo Buckets, and Fishing for Prizes.

The Silent Auction featured table after table of local donations and offerings for attendees to bid on.

The unexpected cold weather may have caused some last minute adjustments, but hearts were warm as the community joined together to support the event that in total grossed over $7,500.

These proceeds will all be shared back out in the name of Maggie and Amos to fund local educational programming to

Oregon native climbs to the top of the world 1998 OHS graduate Chad Gaston scales Mt. Everest despite line of climbers

BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com Oregon native Chad Gaston successfully made it to the highest spot on Earth May 22 and has now descended back down to the real world.

Gaston, 39, is one of a team of eight that reached the summit of Mt. Everest, 29,035 feet above sea level.

He made it back to Base Camp 4.

“I’m back at basecamp with the whole team, beat up a bit but safe,” he wrote in his blog May 25.

“What an adventure, what a dream come true, and what a nightmare!”

The climb took Gaston far from his home in the tropics.

Chad Gaston The 1998 Oregon High School graduate owns the Iguana Surf Shop surf shop in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, with his sister, Lindsey Gaston, 37.

The temperature on Mt. Everest, which straddles the border of Nepal and China in the Himalayan Mountains, never rises above freezing, and this time of year, hovers around 0.

Gaston, the son of Lamont Gaston and White Pines Resort President Elizabeth George has chronicled his two-month adventure on his Facebook page, and a blog.

An experienced climber, he has chronicled his journey climbing glaciers, dodging avalanches, riding out ice storms and just generally thumbing his nose at death.

So far this year, 11 people have died in the effort to climb Mt. Everest.

During the week of May 20, crowds of climbers became delayed in a long line headed to the summit, above the mountain’s highest camp at 26,247 feet.

Experts say most people can only spend a matter of minutes at the summit without extra oxygen supplies, and the area where climbers have been stuck is sometimes called the “death zone.”

Mountaineers have suggested that difficult weather conditions, the climbers’ lack of experience, and the growing commercialization of expeditions have contributed to the queue of climbers waiting to get to the peak.

guys down here, but you’d be hardpressed to find anyone in 1, 2 or 3A with better form.”

Besides Mennen and Kruhtoff, the only other vaulter to make 14-9 was Tim Moore of Altamont for PR. But, it took him two tries and he fell below Mennen in the standings.

No. 2 seed Witts, had the misfortune of missing his opening height at 14 feet and collapsed into the pit with shocked look of disbelief.

Jaden Nuzzo of Sullivan went out at 14-9. Both had come in with sectional marks of 15-0 and had been considered the main contenders to Kruhtoff.

After making 14-6, Mennen considered moving to a larger carbon-based pole, but got sage advice from vaulting coach Mark Nehrkorn, who was videoing each attempt.

“You just made that by a half a foot. Stay on the same pole,” Nehrkorn could be heard yelling from the stands.

That pole, borrowed from Winnebago, was the only one he used on Saturday out of several others brought down to Charleston.

​A state title in the pole vault had always been a goal of Jake Mennen.

On May 25 at the IHSA 1A track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University, the Oregon senior got the next best thing – a runner-up finish.

With defending champion Kyle Kruhtoff of Erie-Prophetstown setting a new 1A record with a vault of 16-feet-8, it was Mennen and the other 13 finalists fighting it out for second place.

One of those vaulters, Cameron Witts of Williamsville, won as sophomore with a mark of 14-9 in 2017.

That’s the exact height Mennen cleared in 2019, but it was no match for Kruhtoff.

“With the way Kyle was vaulting, none of us had a chance,” Mennen said. “Still, I can’t ask for a better day than this, with a good friend breaking the record and me being on the podium next to him as a runner-up. What an honor.”

It didn’t come easy for Mennen, who had struggles early in the competition. He missed his first attempt at 13-6 and did not look good in making it on his second attempt.

With the bar moved to 14-0, Mennen didn’t even get off the ground the first time, as his steps were off.

The usually-mechanically sound vaulter and No. 4 seed found himself in 10th place and would have to clear 14 feet or go home empty-handed for the third year in a row. Twice the school record holder, first at 14-7 ½ and again at 14-9, Mennen had been over the 14-foot barrier several times this year, but the pressure cooker of the state finals in front of thousands of fans at O’Brien Field can be overwhelming.

“My first four jumps were really off,” said Mennen, who already had the heartbreak of missing the finals in 2017 and no-heighting in 2018.

“I just sat down and asked for help from God. After that, I settled down and didn’t miss until 15-0.”

With Kruhtoff entering the competition at 14-6 and seven vaulters remaining, it was Mennen rapidly moving up the leaderboard with first-attempt clearances at 14-3, 14-6 and 14-9.

“Those were phenomenal jumps,” Oregon coach Jim Spratt said. “He’s matured so much from the last two seasons. He may not have the speed and gymnastic ability as the elite

Youngren just misses finals of discus at state

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com For Bobby Youngren of Oregon, the IHSA 1A track and field preliminaries on May 23 were a roller-coaster ride. The senior discus thrower nearly qualified for the finals, but missed out by two places.

“Whether I made finals or not, it was awesome being here,” Youngren said. “There was something special about being here with the group of throwers from our sectional.”

Youngren hit a mark of 142-0 and was on the bubble of making it. The previous two years, the cut-off was 142-6 and 143-0.

Bobby Youngren “Bobby got consistent at the end of the year with throws in the lower 140s and that’s how he threw down there,” throwing coach Doug Engel said.

Anxiously watching the final flight, Youngren’s chances improved as some of the higher-seeded throwers were having off days.

“He was a little surprised to be that close,” Engel said. “But, we know from past history that some kids have trouble down there.”

In the end, though, 143-6 was need to move on and Youngren’s highschool career came to an end.

With only Mennen, Moore and Kruhtoff left, Mennen nearly cleared 15-0 on his first try. The pegs holding the bar up on college standards (2”) are shorter than what is used in high school (3”) and that 1-inch difference probably resulted in the bar teetering off.

“I’ve never tried 15 before,” Mennen said. “It was so exciting on that first attempt.”

After going out at 15 feet, all he could do was watch Kruhtoff first break the previous record of 16-3 (Jack Denby, Carlinville 2013) with a 16-4 make.

Kruhtoff then had the bar raised to 16-8 for another record before finally going out at 17-0.

Running the 400 relay with freshman Dre Smith, the foursome clocked a 44.34 to finish sixth in their heat, with Pana winning it at 43.35.

Buck was a difference maker on leg three, passing a couple of other runners and handling the baton efficiently with Sullivan and Finch.

“That was the exact same time we

“We’ve had the some standout individuals over the years, but you won’t find a better human being than Jake,” Spratt said. “He will be missed, not just because of his talent and ability, but because of the role model he is to the younger vaulters.

We have a great tradition of pole vault at Oregon and he’s taken it up another notch.”

T

he long drive back from the boys IHSA state track meet is always bittersweet. It usually signifies the end of the highschool sports year, unless a local softball or baseball team happens to still be playing.

Six years ago, that was the case with the Oregon Hawk baseball team. In one of the most remarkable stories in Oregon sports history, the 10-14 team entered the regional with a No. 5 seed and advanced all the way to the super-sectional.

All five of the games they won were against teams seeded higher than them, including a stunning 5-4 sectional final upset of Byron in 8 innings at the Tigers’ home field.

This was even with their best pitcher, 4-year starter Alex Cain, hampered by injury and relegated to playing infield.

Whoever coach Adam Albrecht inserted into the line-up came up with one big play after another, including unknown sophomore pitcher Mason Smith against Byron.

After whipping Oregon in the regular season, 4-0 and 6-0, Byron probably still hasn’t gotten over that one yet.

The improbable nearly happened at the super-sectional at Augustana College. Oregon took a 4-0 lead against Eureka, only to lose 7-6 and

One has to wonder when was the last time a team advanced to a super-sectional in any sport, but ended the season without a winning record?

BNC Well Represented With Rockford Christian taking fourth and Dixon fifth in the final team standings in the 2A portion of the state track meet, it was an excellent showing by the BNC. Coming in sixth was former member and perennial power Burlington Central.

Another former school, Marengo had one of the more intriguing stories in 2A. Finnegan Schirmer was attempting to become the first Illinois schoolboy in the 125-year history of the meet to win both hurdle races and the 100 and 200 dashes.

He was 3-for-3, but came up short in his final event, the 200, on a hot and humid day. None-the-less, that was an amazing accomplishment in

brutal 2A competition by someone from a school not noted for track.

Of any sport, the IHSA track meet brings out the best in sportsmanship.

That was apparent in observing the interaction between athletes from different races, ethnic makeup, school size and ability.

Examples of this and multitudes others are what the IHSA has in mind in promoting sportsmanship.

Instead of antagonism against referees so often seen in other sports, the track athletes show respect to their event officials.

The IHSA claims its “Spring Spectacular” meet to be the finest in the country and I agree. One of the most popular activities of the weekend takes place Friday night.

That is when the track is open to anyone and for $5 an entry, you can run various events. Far and away the most popular is the steeplechase, an event only college tracks can offer.

There were 220 entrants; with the water jump the main selling point.

Top Vaulters With his runner-up finish in state pole vault, does Jake Mennen go down as the best vaulter in Oregon school history?

What about 2005 state champ Adam Tate, who coach Dave Gilbert called the most mentally-tough kid he ever coached. Gilbert’s step-son, Jeremy Nesemeier, was the first Hawk vaulter to crack the 14-foot barrier in 2001.

Another 14-footer was self-taught Ethan Gale, who helped the 2009 team win a state title by earning points in the pole vault. Joining Gale in the finals was Drew Smith, who remarkably reached 14 feet in his first year out for track.

Oregon also had a great run with Austin McCourt, Mark Schmidt and Ashton Rutherford in consecutive years, dominating the BNC and sectional action.

Schmidt was the only one out of the bunch not to join the 14-foot club, but has the distinction of being one of the only two modern-era Oregon track athletes to make the finals in an individual event three years in a row.

Dr. Mark Myers (1983-85) was the other and he did it in the high jump.

And, should this be the domain of just males? What about one of true pioneers of girls pole vaulting – Ashley Harvey.

With 1:31.60 needed to make the finals, it would have been a long shot for the Hawks to get in. Their seed time was 1:32.55.

In an intense competition in the 1A pole vault prelim, Jake Mennen was one of 15 vaulters to make 13-6 and move on to the finals. It was his first time in the finals and a relief for him after missing the previous two years.

“I’ve never seen this many over 13-6 in the preliminaries,” said longtime vault official Jim Johnson of Seneca.

Forreston-Polo was near the top of 1A with five individual and two relay qualifiers. Winnebago had one qualifier in hurdler Chandler Ellis and Byron none.

Sullivan, Buck, Mennen, Finch and Youngren are seniors, but Smith returns.

“I think we can put another decent relay together with some of the kids coming back,” Spratt said. “We’ll especially miss Calvin. He was the guy we hung everything on.”

Junior high track athletes compete at state meet On May 17, the IESA Class 2A State track meet was held in East Peoria with athletes from David L. Rahn Junior High participating.

Three thousand athletes representing more than 290 schools participated in the meet.

Seventh grade high jumper, Kenna Wubbena, was the lone place winner at the meet when she leaped 4’9” to claim the sixth place medal.

This also tied a David L. Rahn Junior High School record.

Other Eagles participating in the state meet were: Hadley Lutz, long jump (9th) with a jump of 16’2” to better her own school record set earlier this season; Elizabeth Mois, shot put (11th); Jennica Ciesiel, high jump (11th); Ava Wight, long jump (29th); Sebastian Cardenas, 400M (29th); Sophia Stender, pole vault; Leo Cardenas, pole vault; and the 8th grade 4x200 relay of Justin Miller, Emmett Peterson, Jacob Vegliando, Sebastian Cardenas and alternate, Evan James (17th).

The true answer to best pole vaulter from Oregon is an easy one.

That would be Sherman Landers,

the most accomplished track athlete ever from Oregon.

His high-school best of 12-8 from 1916 was only 4 inches away from the world record at the time. It remained the best high-school mark in the country for seven years.

Compared to the fiberglass poles and foam landing pits today’s vaulters enjoy, Landers was vaulting with bamboo or steel poles and landing on sawdust.

IHSA STATE TRACK MEET

Forreston-Polo track team finishes in top-10

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com It wasn’t what they hoped for, but it will still go down as one of the most successful boys state track and field meets in the history of both Forreston and Polo high schools.

The co-op finished with 21 points at the IHSA meet on the campus of Eastern Illinois in Charleston. It didn’t earn them a state trophy, but it was enough for a third straight top-10 finish.

“It’s always bittersweet,” F-P coach Bob Wagner said. “You’re right in the hunt for a trophy and miss out, but is nice to have a bunch of kids come home with medals.”

Catlin (Salt Fork) won the meet with 40, followed by DuQuoin and Pana with 36. F-P tied with Hall Township for seventh place.

Led by a runner-up in the discus from Jace Coffey and 4-event placer Brady Webb, F-P brought home medals in six events, adding to the total of 15 over that 3-year span.

After what he termed a rough day in Thursday’s preliminaries (156-5), Coffey had a dream series in Saturday’s finals with throws of 172-4, 173-8 and 177-8.

“We’ve been focusing on speeding up through the ring,” discus coach Steve Christensen said. “For the last three weeks, he’s had his technique down. Now, it’s working through the ring with acceleration. That’s where the extra distance comes in.”

Each throw in the finals surpassed his PR and his Polo school record of 172-3 and pulled him within two feet of the 179-10 by Joe Kingery of Teutopolis. Ironically, Coffee and

Kingery, both at 5-10 and 195 pounds, were far and away the smallest competitors.

“Joe’s a great guy and I had such a good time for all the competitors,” said the affable Coffey. “When things weren’t going so well for me, CJ Picazo of Tuscola pulled me aside and helped me settle down. This meet was the best competition ever.”

Coffey was aided by some extra practice the night before finals.

“Last night, I came out here with coach Steve and he figured out what was wrong,” Coffey said. “Everything he told me to do worked.”

Webb made it three state places in a row in the long jump with a mark of 21-10.5. That took seventh and though he medaled, there was a sense of disappointment in not reaching his PR of 22-7 set last sea-

“In the long jump, you have to put it all together at once,” said Webb, of the difficulties involved in nailing that one perfect jump, like Mason Wright was able to do on his final attempt at the 2017 state meet in the triple jump. “That can be hard to do.”

Webb also ran in the 100 finals and claimed the title of the eighth-fastest runner in 1A with a clocking of 11.16. Cody Klein gave Pana its first-ever first place in any event, with a time of 10.85.

The other individual medalist for F-P was sophomore Bennett Soltow in the 110 hurdles. Soltow was all smiles after finishing ninth with a 15.45. Mason Barr of Colfax-Ridgeview ran 13.94 and missed by .01 of breaking the 1A record.

Oregon third grade students recently visited a beef and dairy farm. Thank you to Snodgrass Dairy and Nordman Feedlots for opening up their farms and sharing their farming experience with these students!

In order to prepare for their tours they learned more about beef and dairy cows. To find out more about dairy cows students discovered how cheese is made.

They heated milk, added rennet, and lemon juice. The acidic nature of the lemon juice caused curds to form.

Along with curds there was a liquid called whey. The curds and whey were separated.

The curds were put in the refrigerator for students to try once they cooled.

This activity was used to demonstrate the practice at a cheese factory. At the factory milk is pasteurized, a starter culAfter ture and rennet is added. the curds form, the whey is separated.

The whey is shipped to other food processors and used in candy, ice cream,

and bakery goods.

The cheese is cut into small pieces, and put into a mixer filled with hot water.

The cheese melts into a big mound.

The blocks of cheese are put into forms to cool. They look like loaves of bread.

Finally they are put into a salt brine bath.

Agriculture in the Classroom is a program to help students gain a greater awareness of the role of agriculture in the economy and society.

Students learn that thousands of farm products are in the world around them— on their plate, in the clothes they wear, in the medicine that makes them well, and in earth-friendly fuels and plastics.

Ag in the Classroom is offered through the University of Illinois Extension in partnership with Ogle County Farm Bureau, Carroll County Farm Bureau, Carroll County Soil & Water, and Ogle County Soil & Water.

A courtroom is not a place where you expect to find scenes of celebration and tears of joy. Unless, of course, it is drug court.

During the month of May, Ogle County New Horizon’s Specialty Court is joining more than 3,000 such programs nationwide in celebrating National Drug Court Month.

In 2019 alone, more than 150,000 individuals nationwide who entered the justice system due to addiction will receive life-saving treatment and the chance to repair their lives, reconnect with their families and find long-term recovery.

National Drug Court Month is not only a celebration of the lives restored by drug court, it also sends the powerful message that these programs must be expanded to reach more people in need.

Specialty Court team to present at conference The Ogle County Specialty Courts team has been selected as presenters at RISE19, the National Association of Drug Court Professional’s annual training conference July 14-17 in National Harbor, Maryland.

Specialty Court team members include Judge John B. Roe IV and Judge Clayton Lindsey, Specialty Courts presiding judges; Eric Morrow, state’s attorney; Justyna Palasiewicz, assistant state’s attorney; Brian VanVickle, sheriff; Kathleen Isley and Dennis Riley, public defenders; Kevin Buss, treatment provider from Sinnissippi

Centers; Dr. Yemi Fatoki, M.D.; Brigette Beckman, Brian Peterson, and Stacy Noble, probation officers; Lt. Jason Lynn; and Brooke Plachno, Specialty Courts coordinator.

NADCP receives hundreds of high quality proposals from across the nation, most of which they are unable to accept, making it an accomplishment and honor to be chosen.

The presentation is on Rural Problem-Solving Courts: Establishing, Sustaining, and Collaborating.

Rural problem-solving courts are proving to be a

necessary initiative across the nation, with many more challenges than urban-suburban settings.

The interactive session will look at how Ogle County brought stakeholders to the table to begin a specialty court, how the transition of nearly all team members’ roles has affected the program, maintaining an efficient program, and expanding the program to include an additional track.

The panelists include the founding team members, along with new team members, who will share specific challenges, strengths and solutions that work in the rural setting.

May 22 Jose Barraza, 21, of Ashton, was arrested for an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Barraza posted the $3,000 (10%) bond and was released with a return court date of June 10.

Kenny graduated from Polo Community High School in 1949, and was initially employed as a welder for Central Quality Industries.

Kenneth married the former Florella Kline on Dec. 6, 1969 at the Evangelical

War Veterans Association.

Kenneth loved his gardens and the many flowers he nurtured to life. During his last days these brought him much joy.

This man loved life to its fullest, every single day.

Survivors include his wife, Florella, of Marysville, Kansas; two sons, Randy Bender, of Mountain House, California, and David Bender, of Lake Havasu, Arizona; a daughter, Joanne, of Tacoma, Washington; and

two brothers, Leonard (Connie), of Morrison, and Sid (Shirley), of Barabou, Wisconsin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Erma Jean Bender.

Graveside memorial services with military honors will be held on Saturday, June 1 at 11 a.m. at Fairmount Cemetery, Polo.

Sentencings Steven F. Brothers, 35, Plymouth, pleaded guilty on May 20 to possession of a controlled substance.

Judge John B. Roe sentenced him to 24 months drug probation without a conviction, and ordered him to complete 30 hours public service work, and pay fines and costs of $2,782.

Eric J. Reyes, 23, Byron, pleaded guilty on May 20 to domestic battery. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to two days in jail and ordered him to pay fines and costs of $1,000. Two counts of domestic battery were dismissed pursuant to plea agreement.

Gilberto Nieves, 32, Rochelle, pleaded guilty on May 21 to unlawful use of a weapon. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to serve 180 days in jail to be remitted upon successful completion of 24 months probation.

Hanosn also ordered him to submit to random drug and alcohol testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as recommended, have no contact with the victims, and pay total fines and costs of $1,788.

Nieves also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault. Hanson sentenced him to serve 180 days in jail to be remitted upon successful completion of 24 months probation, and ordered him to submit to random drug and alcohol testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as rec-
