PorchFest set for June 8 in Mt. Morris Residents and visitors will once again be entertained by live music performed on the front porch at the third annual Encore! PorchFest Mt. Morris early next month.

Several musicians have already signed up to play on Saturday, June 8 from 1 to 5 p.m.

PorchFest is a community-building event that matches musical performers of all kinds with residents’ porches.

Groups or individuals perform a 45-minute set, and listeners can walk or bike from porch to porch to listen throughout the afternoon.

PorchFest boundaries for 2019 are Main Street to the north, Brayton Road to the south, Mulberry Avenue to the west, and Ogle Avenue to the east, and both sides of Brayton Road east to Bruce Lane, same as in 2018.

Nineteen solo or musical groups performed throughout the boundaries of the festival in both 2017 and 2018.

“Early sign-up has been great, including some exciting new musicians,” said Encore! member Jeff Bold.

“We’re extending sign-up to May 24.

If you sing or play an instrument solo or with a group and want to perform a 45-minute set between 1 and 5 p.m., or if you’d like to host music during the festival on your porch, stoop, or driveway, or if you’d like to sell food from a space within the boundaries of the festival (Ogle County Health Department rules apply), sign up now at EncorePorchFest.info.”

LIBRARY PROGRAM

Foundation seeks donations for kids’ books First graders to benefit from 9x9x9 program The Mt. Morris Community Library Foundation (MMCLF) has implemented a new program called 9x9x9.

The program is a continuation of a program started in 2018 by local first grade teacher Dawn Merrill, who reached out on social media to enlist contributions.

9x9x9 hopes to continue bringing books to all first graders at Oregon Elementary School.

A $9 donation buys 9 books over 9 months.

By donating through the MMCLF, contributions will be tax deductible. The books are purchased through the Scholastic Book Club.

Last year’s donations allowed all students in first grade to receive books this past year.

The MMCLF will solicit funds for the program at two upcoming events this summer.

The first will be when they host refreshments at the opening of Encore’s student art show on Friday, June 7 when the band The Jimmys kicks off the Mt.

Morris Jamboree Friday Night Concerts for the 2019 season.

The second will be in July when they hold an ice cream social on Wednesday, July 17 during the Community Band Concert on the Mt. Morris Campus.

The Mt. Morris Public Library can also accept donations, or they can be mailed to the Mt. Morris Public Library, 105 S. McKendrie Ave., Mt. Morris, IL 61054.

Foundation members hope that starting small home libraries for our youngest readers will instill a love of reading and learning in these students that will continue throughout their lives.

Firefighters and EMS personnel from 12 area fire departments got hands-on training last week at a practice drill involving a school bus accident. The mock accident was coordinated by the Leaf River Fire Department and was staged May 6 on Pond Road just north of the village. Leaf River Fire Chief Steve Shelton said the “victims� included grade school and high school students and adults, as well as the bus driver. He said the scenario was that the bus went off the gravel road because the driver, who did not “survive,� suffered a heart attack. Participating fire departments included Leaf River, Forreston, Mt. Morris, Byron, German Valley, Pecatonica, Durand, Win-Bur-Sew, Shannon, Lanark, Milledgeville, and Freeport Rural. The Forrestville Valley School District supplied the bus and driver. Village-wide spring cleanup day is set for May 18 Any left-overs will be picked up on May 19 The Village of Mt. Morris will offer residents the opportunity this weekend to spruce up their properties and get rid of no longer needed or wanted items.

Residents can place their non-perishable, unwanted items at the curb during a village-wide Clean Up & Junk Exchange on Saturday, May 18.

Throughout the day pickers, scrappers, and repurposers are encouraged to “rescue” items that can be reused or recycled.

What remains will be picked up

the following day on Sunday, May 19 by village trash hauler, Northern Illinois Disposal.

Because this is not a regular trash pick-up, help the crew from Northern Illinois Disposal by keeping leftovers from Saturday close together for easy pick-up.

Garbage and yard waste, however, will need to wait until the regular curb placement time on Wednesday.

As is the case with normal trash, hazardous waste, electronics, construction debris, and appliances are prohibited.

Those needing assistance to get items out onto the curb should call the village hall at 815-7346425 from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

OGLE COUNTY COURTS

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Charges have been upgraded to felonies for four people accused of beating two men in Chana last month.

Amber Koeller, 26, Steven Dodson, 41, and Patrick Christenson, 27, all of Chana, and Stephanie McGlinn, 27, of Byron, are now each face two counts of mob action, a Class 4 felony, instead of two counts of battery, a misdemeanor, in the April 20 incident.

In addition, Koeller and Dodson are each charged with obstructing a peace officer.

According to a press release from Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle, the two victims were found at 10:45 p.m. at the scene of the battery near the intersection of Chana

Road and Center Street.

They were provided with medical attention by Oregon EMS and were transported to KSB Hospital, Dixon.

The offenders had left the scene, but deputies located their vehicle and stopped it at 11:35 p.m. as it traveled south on Chana Road and turned onto Grist Mill Road.

Koeller and Dodson were arrested then, and deputies later located Christenson and McGlinn and arrested them.

Dodson, the driver the vehicle, was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

He pleaded not guilty to that charge at the May 10 hearing.

Recycle latex paint and shred documents May 18 The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department will conduct a residential latex paint and paper shred recycling event on Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at 909 Pines Rd, Oregon.

Use this opportunity to clean out those storage closets and shelves in the garage by having your unwanted latex paint recycled and confidential documents properly shredded and recycled into new paper products.

A limit of 10 latex paint containers will be accepted per vehicle.

Latex paint should be liquid and in original containers, preferably with labels.

Liquid paint only, no dried out or hardened paint will be accepted.

The cost per container is as follows: $1 for a gallon container, $5 for a 5 gallon container, and quartsized containers are $1 minimum for 1-2 cans, $2 for 3-4 cans, etc.

The rest of the latex paint recycling fees will be subsidized by the OCSWMD. Collected latex paint will be recycled and blended into usable paint, then distributed to groups such as Habitat for Humanity.

No spray paint cans, oil based paints, stains, varnishes, paint thinners, vehicle paints, business or commercial generated paints will be accepted at this event.

Free document shredding will begin at 9 a.m. and go until 12 p.m.

The limit is three boxes of confidential documents per vehicle.

The documents will be shredded on site. Do not bring newspaper, magazines, or catalogs for shredding.

The ceremony is outdoors on the HCC campus at the courtyard between the Marvin-Burt Liberal Arts Center and Natural Science Center.

The commencement speaker is Cristina Lambert, a recipient of the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award. After graduating from Highland Community College in 1978, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a master’s of business administration at Indiana Wesleyan University.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Larry F. Kahl Gymnasium in the YMCA and Sports Center on Highland’s campus.

HCC GRADUATION The northwest Illinois community and friends of Highland Community College are invited to join the 2019 graduates and their families as they celebrate the 56th annual Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. at Highland Community College, 2998 W. Memorial Day ceremony moves to fountain Mt. Morris American Legion Post 143’s annual Memorial Day Program will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27 on the northeast corner of the Mt. Morris Campus under the shade trees near the Veterans Fountain at Main Street and South Wesley Avenue.

Bring chairs. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held at the Mt.

Morris Moose Club, beginning at the same time.

The program includes the singing of the National Anthem, readings of “In Flanders Fields” and the Gettysburg Address; the placement of wreathes to honor Mt. Morris soldiers killed in action and veterans from all American wars; a reading of the names of deceased veterans;

and the firing squad, “Taps,” and prayers.

The yearly pot luck will again be at the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge, 101 Moose Drive, just off Mud Creek Road at 12:30 p.m.

LOCAL COMPETITION

Area seniors invited to Brain Games Register by May 20 to take part in event The Association of Illinois Senior Centers, the Illinois Department on Aging, and the Mt. Morris Senior Center will host a free Illinois State Senior Brain Games competition for area senior citizens on Tuesday, May 21 at 6 p.m. at the senior center, 9 E. Front St., Mt. Morris.

The Senior Brain Games Competition is an exciting statewide pro-

gram that provides Illinois adults age 50 and older the opportunity to showcase and celebrate a lifetime of knowledge in a team event.

Since no registration fee is charged for this program, every senior will have a chance to compete.

This will be a team trivia event, consisting of four rounds of play — each round consisting of five questions.

Questions will be from a variety of different categories, similar to the categories in Trivial Pursuit, and teams will have to be strate-

gic with how they earn points with their answers.

Local Senior Brain Games competitions are being held throughout Illinois in 2019.

First place teams will advance to regional semi-final competitions that will lead to the State Final competition, to be held at the 2019 Illinois State Fair on Senior Day, Monday, Aug. 12.

Baccalaureate set for May 19 A baccalaureate service for the Oregon High School Class of 2019 will be held on Sunday, May 19 at 4:30 p.m. at the Blackhawk Center.

Dressy casual attire is recommended, but seniors do not need their caps and gowns.

Graduation will be held on Sunday, May 26 at 2 p.m. at the Blackhawk Center.

Graphically Speaking: The Power of Visual Storytelling Friday, May 17 & Saturday, May 18 The library is hosting a great event!

In partnership with Encore! Mt. Morris, the Mt. Morris Senior Center and several local artists, we present Graphically Speaking: The Power of Visual Storytelling.

May 18 at 9 a.m. – Hands–on Artist Workshop with Will Haun. This workshop is for artists age 12 and up.

If you want to learn how to create your own comic book style hero, this is the workshop for you.

Haun is a Rockford artist, creator of Weird, Weird West comic book series.

This is a free workshop but is limited to 25 participants, so you must sign up for this event. Please call the library to sign up or if you have any questions at 815-734-4927.

May 18 at 6 p.m. - Morals Behind the Mask: Exploring the Influence of comic books as characters such as Wolverine,

Join the professionals from the field of clinical psychology as they explore the moral lessons taught by characters found within comic book culture.

Presenters will also discuss the influence of comic books on moral development during adolescence, the benefits of comic books within the field of clinical psychology, and the importance of role models in one’s life.

Panelists include Dr. Joe Serrano, Dr. Edgar Ramos, and Samatha Chavez, Clinical Psychologists and avid comic book fans.

This panel has presented at a variety of comic cons around the Chicago area.

Two Ogle County seniors awarded scholarships The Foundation for Focus House Scholarship Committee recently awarded scholarships to two high school seniors.

Rochelle Township High School senior Graciela Perez, was awarded a general Foundation for Focus House scholarship in the amount of $250 at her senior awards night on May 6.

Perez plans to attend Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts,

in the fall to pursue a degree in Accounting.

Stillman Valley High School senior Paige Lockard, was awarded a general Foundation for Focus House scholarship in the amount of $250 at her senior awards night on May 7.

Lockard plans to attend Rockford University in the fall to pursue a degree in Nursing.

Reynold Alde, of Mullins Farms, will instruct the precision agriculture training classes this summer.

He intends to split class time between learning theory and working out in the field with the equipment and software.

The two community education courses in precision ag will help students learn about mapping boundary lines (including interior boundaries), creating a grid, flagging the field, and writing a variable rate application prescription.

Courses are geared toward people looking at precision agriculture as a career or those who may want to enter the profession as a crop scout or applicator.

Summer AG Institute for educators offered in June The Summer Ag Institute, a handson learning experience for educators, is a six-day program, June 10-14 & 17, for teachers who will learn first-hand about agriculture and how to incorporate Ag lesson plans into their classroom curriculums.

The Kishwaukee College Foundation recently worked with five local donors to purchase a variety of equipment needs for the new agriculture program.

A John Deere UTV Crossover Gator, Demco 80-gallon 21-inch boom sprayer, John Deere Rate Controller 2000, and John Deere AutoTrac Universal 300, among other various components, were donated last fall for a total of $26,088.21.

The purchase was made possible through a combination of funding sources, including new donations and funds from current donors and their established funds.

Donors contributing include DeKalb Implement Company, a John Deere dealership; HBB Foundation at Babson Farms; the Wildenradts Endowment; the Kishwaukee College Foundation Challenge Fund established by Dave and Suzanne Juday and Bill Nicklas; and the Dutch Johnson Endowment.

Solar energy class is offered May 25 near Oregon Anyone who is interested in knowing more about solar electricity or is thinking about a home solar installation is invited to attend a class hosted by the Illinois Renewable Energy Association on Saturday, May 25, at the IREA Headquarters, 1230 E. Honey Creek Rd., Oregon.

The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1230 E. Honey Creek Rd. Oregon. All equipment will be provided.

An experienced PV installer who has completed more than 600 systems in this part of Illinois will be the instructor.

He will present a clear explanation of what solar electricity is and how it works.

After the presentation, he

will lead the class in assembling an actual PV system meant for home use, wiring it and watching it work. The group will then disassemble it.

The couple who live with the installation at the center, which is their home, will share their experiences in living with PV. The fee is $20 for IREA members and $40 for non-members, which includes membership.

An optional lunch will be provided for $6. Those who prefer to bring their own lunch may do so.

Barrick Oaks Homestead tour on Saturday, May 18 The Byron Forest Preserve District will offer a free guided tour of its rarely visited Barrick Oaks Homestead Preserve on Saturday, May 18 starting at 8:30 a.m.

Superintendent of Education Mark Herman will lead the walk beginning at the preserve’s gravel parking lot located at 3494 Oak Grove Road just off of Tower Road north of Byron.

This scenic, little known, 230 acre preserve features old oak savannas, limestone bluffs and a beautiful wetland section of East Fork Middle Creek that features an active beaver colony.

The Barrick Oaks Homestead Preserve is another of the Byron Forest Preserve District’s hidden gems.

There will be uneven terrain, moderate hiking and some wet areas.

This free program is recommended for ages 10 and up.

The White Pines Wedding Canyon and Pine Creek Cabins, near the White Pines State Park, had a change of ownership earlier this spring.

Elizabeth George, who has owned the two properties for the last 18 years, has sold them to Rebecca Jones. The sale was final on April 1.

Jones said George, who gave her her first job when she was 13, has been her mentor for 20 years.

“It’s just time — I’ve been doing this for a long time,” George said.

“It’s time for the next generation to step up and move forward. Weddings are a great place for a young woman to get her feet wet. Rebecca has worked for me off and on since she was a teenager. She’s going to do a phenomenal job.”

After living in Phoenix for the eight years, Jones moved back to this area in August of 2017.

In Phoenix, she was the food and beverage director of Grayhawk Golf Club and responsible for $9 million in food and beverage sales.

The White Pines Wedding Canyon is located on Pines Road between Oregon and Polo.

“After seven years in that position and some wonderful mentorship in Phoenix, I was ready to come back and use my acquired knowledge in a town I love,” Jones said. “While I

She said she and Jones will work together to coordinate weddings.

Preparations are underway for the 10th annual AJ’s Garden Tractor Jamboree on Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1675 S. Columbian Rd., southwest of Oregon.

“As the weather has warmed over the last week or so we are all looking forward to another fun and exciting day,” said host AJ Hinrichs.

“There is plenty of room for parking and garden tractors. Last year was we had over 250 garden tractors and we hope to increase that to at least 300 this year.”

Girls track team poised for state meet medals

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com With three individuals and two relays seeded in the top 10 among 1A state qualifiers, Oregon girls track and field team is in good position to end a 5-year state medal drought.

It was Shannon Cullen medaling in the shot put and discus and Cydney Long doing the same in both hurdle races in 2014.

The last relay to medal was the 2012 unit of Sam Judge, Kate Groenhagen, Delaney and Maisie Mahoney, which took fifth in the 1,600.

The 39-10 in the shot put by Benna Noon looks like the best bet, as she is the No. 5 seed. Last year, 38 feet got a medal. At 36-11, Jenae Bothe is ranked No. 9 in the shot, with the top nine medaling.

Cynthia Nyderek’s 35-2 is No. 10 in the triple jump. At 35-7 medaled last year.

Lady Hawks come from behind to win regional Oregon beats Byron 3-2 in overtime to advance to sectional

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Oregon’s soccer team trailed 2-0 with only 20 minutes left in the 1A regional final on May 11.

This was after a first half in which Byron controlled the ball on its side of the field for 75 percent of the time.

To compound matters, Olivia Lambrigtsen, one of the key players for the Lady Hawks, was not at the game and this was a program only three years in the making compared to 15 for Byron.

In a stunning reversal though, the Hawks rallied for an improbable 3-2 win in overtime.

“Byron came out like they were there to prove something and some of our players played to not make mistakes,” Oregon Coach Seger Larson said. “These girls never quit.

At halftime, I told the girls not to give up on each. I hadn’t given up on them.”

With 30 minutes left, Oregon gave an inkling of what could be by a near miss at the goal by Katelyn Byerley.

She was set up by Leah Watters on a perfect pass and had a dead-on attempt that was gobbled up Byron goalkeeper Isabelle McKinley.

But Watters and Byerley tried the same play 10 minutes later and though a score didn’t result, Byerley was tackled in front of the goal which resulted in a penalty kick for the Lady Hawks.

Oregon’s goalkeeper, Katelin Pudlas, was brought all the way up the field and placed a rocket shot in the corner of the net that McKinley had no chance of stopping.

“Our seniors, like Katelyn Byerley, MyKenzie Beitel on defense, Katelin Pudlas in the goal and Hannah Donaldson really stepped up,” Larson said.

It was Donaldson setting up the next score on a long-range free kick after another Tiger infraction. With 4:55 left in the game, she lofted a kick towards the net that Watters was able to alertly corral.

With light rain coming down, McKinley looked to have a stop on the shot but it slipped through her arms for a 2-2 tie, the same fate that

“I saw it bounce off someone and put it right at (McKinley),” Watters said.

Byron put together a flurry of activity near Oregon’s goal with 2:30 left, but could not regain the lead with Pudlas tending net.

“She’s one of the best in the conference and that goal that went through her arms was a fluke,” said Larson of Pudlas.

After regulation ended tied, Oregon had its choice of goal for the first 10-minute overtime and they chose the north end. Every goal had been scored at that end and the wind was favorable.

Hoping to take advantage of favorable field position, Madisyn Byerley came up with the ball at midfield and found her big sister, Katelyn, in stride upfield.

Katelyn, under heavy pressure near the net from Byron’s Olivia Ebens, beat Ebens to the ball and drilled it past McKinley for the only goal in the two 10-minute extra periods.

Going into the fourth inning with a 9-0 lead against Oregon on Monday night, the 1-16 Fulton baseball team had to be feeling pretty good about its chances for a second win in a 2A regional play-in game.

But, coach Brent Dykstra could count at least nine games in which one bad inning was the main culprit in losses.

The same scenario began to unfold in Oregon, as the Hawks (3-23) came back to tie the game 10-10 heading into the seventh inning.

The difference this time, though, was the Steamers scored the only run by either team in the final inning and managed to hold on for an 11-10 victory.

“Finally today, we didn’t beat ourselves,” Fulton coach Brent Dykstra. “It’s rough starting five freshmen and not have them get discouraged when things start to fall apart.”

One of those freshman, Brock Mason, led off the seventh with a hard single through the infield. Freshman Jakob Jones was initially called out at first on a bunt sacrifice, but was given the base after it was ruled Hawk catcher Breccan Berns interfered with him.

“I’m not going to complain about the (interference) call,” Oregon coach Nate Girton said. “We didn’t lose because of that. We lost because of too many errors.”

Fulton sophomore Conner Barnett also reached first base on an Oregon miscue at first base. Meanwhile, Mason took advantage of the dropped ball and raced home for what turned out to be the winning run.

In the bottom of the seventh, lead-off batter Berns was walked. He reached second on a passed ball. With the 2-3-4 hitters up and no outs, the Hawks had high hopes of continuing its late innings’ rally against Jake Pannell, a

It came with 1:45 left in the first OT and only had a 1-foot clearance from the side post.

“It was so nerve-wracking,” said Katelyn, who had a look of both exhilaration and relief on her face once the shot got through. “I was able to read the play and do the best I could. This team has worked so hard for this.”

In the second OT, Audrey Willa had a free kick for Byron, but the play was squelched by Pudlas.

Then, with 40 seconds left, Anika Roush, who had one of Byron’s (11-8) first-half goals, had a shot-on-goal also stopped by Pudlas.

“I made poor adjustments at half,” Byron coach Andy Stavnem said.

“We came out a little more defensively than we needed to be. That’s on me.”

In the previous Byron-Oregon game, the Hawks won 2-1 in extra periods.

No. 2 sub-sectional seed Oregon (15-6-1) advances to the Indian Creek sectional to play No. 1 Rockford Lutheran (9-8) on Wednesday, May 15. They were not able to play in regulation due to a rain out.

“This is something to build on. To win a regional in only our third year is saying something,” said Larson, who will returning to his high-school alma mater for the sectional.

Oregon will still be without the services of Lambrigtsen, who is in Hawaii attending her sister Sam’s college graduation.

“I don’t have a say in that one,” said Larson, the fiancé of Sam Lambrigtsen, Oregon’s all-time leading basketball scorer.

Lady Hawks run, jump, throw well at sectional Six individuals in seven events and two relays headed to state

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Even though Winnebago edged Oregon 138-127 at the 1A girls track & field sectional meet, depriving the host school of a first-ever title, it did not take away from a big jump the Hawks made from 2018 to 2019.

Last year, Oregon qualified three individuals and one relay for the state meet and took a distant third to Winnebago.

This time out, it was a whopping six individuals in seven events and two relays headed to Charleston, site of the IHSA state meet.

“I’m really proud of how many PRs we had and the way everyone stepped up,” said one of those returning qualifiers, Lydia Cermak. “It’s okay we didn’t win the meet. We’re sending enough people down.”

With six state qualifiers all hitting personal bests, the field events couldn’t have started any better for Oregon on May 10.

Within 45 minutes, Cynthia Nyderek improved nearly two feet in the triple jump to win with a 35-feet-2 mark, Abi Hopkins popped a 34-8 for second, Lydia Cermak won the long jump at 16-8, Lyndi Kenney was second in the pole vault at 9-0 and Brenna Noon (39-10) and Jenae Bothe (36-11) went 1-2 in the shot put.

“That was a case of good mental and physical preparation,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said.

“This week, they rested up and let the body heal. They came in tonight ready to do battle.”

Bothe also added a discus qualification with a second-place effort of 104-8. That gave Oregon 58 points in the field events, adding in a fourth

As they’ve done all year, it was Hopkins and Nyderek winning at hurdles. Hopkins set a PR of 16.26 in the 100-meter hurdles and Nyderek caught Hopkins the final 10 meters for a 48.03 to 48.46 win in the 300.

“I’m still aiming to get into the 15s for the 100 hurdles,” said Hopkins, a 3-time sectional champ in that event.

It was in the cold and rain of the Lena-Winslow sectional last year that Hopkins had her previous best of 16.33.

mak, Jadyn Bothe, Elizza Easley and Erin Schmidt, 50.76 to 50.88.

It was the same result in the 4 X 200 with Byron coming out on top, 1:48.21 to 1:48.94.

Both times, Oregon was seeded No. 1. Byron got a boost from sprint double champion Kendra Jackson, out for track again after two years off.

Additionally, Byron coach Scott McMullen is known for not running his A-team relays until the post season. The Tigers placed third with 87 points.

“I’m very happy and proud of those girls,” Schneiderman said.

“We have a lot of girls that work

hard and could have been on those relays. Those four are the fortunate ones.”

The 400 time of 50.88 broke the Oregon school record of 50.91 set in 2011 by Maise Mahoney, Krista Greene, Cydney Long and Sam Lambrigtsen, Of any one competitor for Oregon, Bre DeHaan came the closest to qualifying, taking third in two events. She held second place in the 400, only to see Brook Hass of LenaWinslow come from behind and beat her to the finish for the automatic qualification.

Then in the 4 X 400 relay, Byron took second over the team of

DeHaan, Easley, Hopkins and Kenney. Oregon’s time of 4:19 was 1.45 seconds slower than what the state standard.

Another non-qualifying place winner was Cermak, taking fourth in the 200 with a 27.55 clocking. Last year, she ran 28.13 for a sectional second place.

“Last year, we were lucky with first and second finishes to qualify for state,” Cermak said. “I’m glad we hit qualifying in most of our events tonight, I want to be competing in the finals instead of being done by the first day like we were last year at state.”

Wide World of Sports used to say – “the thrill of victory.” For Byron, it was the “agony of defeat” – the other moniker from that show.

As much as all of us have complained about the inclement weather this spring, I felt the cold, wind and rain at the soccer game tacked on another level of intrigue to what was already a suspenseful event.

Kind of like fog in a movie mystery or snow slowly falling at a football game.

It doesn’t work at track meets or softball/baseball games though.

Those were meant to be played and enjoyed in warm, sunny conditions.

The last few years have been rough on spring sports and it wasn’t always like this. There is a different weather pattern in place and spring sports are bearing the biggest brunt of it.

really nice until the season is about over, like this weekend for example.

There really isn’t a solution for this.

High-school baseball tried going to summer ball in the 1970s, but the interest level dropped substantially and it was eventually brought back to the spring. You wonder if the cold weather is a factor in reduced participation out for spring sports?

There was another activity lost in the all the hubbub over a home sectional track meet and soccer regional final. It was something done regularly at schools all over the country and something I’ve never been to.

Any guesses?

Try a college signing. That’s where I found myself Friday afternoon.

What drew me there was that it was not a signing for sports. It was for cheerleading.

Oregon senior Grace Mongan will be attending the University of Illinois and be on the sidelines rooting on the football and basketball teams, as they travel all over the country.

That sounds like a pretty cool gig and one that isn’t handed to you. As I discovered, it was an intense competition to make the final cut to be a cheerleader for the “Fightin Illini.”

In a case of life coming full circle, Grace’s grandmother, Roberta Macauley, was the first person from Oregon I ever met when I came to work here in 1980. Soon I began to tease Roberta about the abundance of mentions in the podunk Oregon newspaper about her two daughter’s school and 4-H activities.

Coming from much larger Rochelle, I jokingly told her that our paper not have such trivial stuff in it.

As those two daughters, Julie and Jeannie, grew up and had children of their own, my running gag with Roberta was able to continue, as she now had grandkids getting newspaper time.

Nearly 40 years later, with Grace being the final grandkid of Roberta to graduate from OHS, it was poignant to attend her signing ceremony.

Not only was it a chance to visit with family, but to reflect on how fortunate I am to live in a town like Oregon or Mt. Morris, where smalltown newspapers still celebrate its youth.

hat a weekend for girls sports at Oregon.

Fresh off its first-ever BNC girls track and field title, Oregon qualified 10 entries at Friday’s sectional.

The next day brought a regional title to a Hawk soccer program only three years old. “It’s great to be an Oregon Hawk,” certainly rang true as of late.

It didn’t look good for the soccer team with time running down late in its game versus Byron.

After going scoreless for the first 60 minutes, the Hawks only had 20 minutes left to score two goals. And, that was just to tie the game.

Finally, with just under five minutes remaining, Oregon managed that second goal for the tie. With such an improbable comeback, it seemed destined the team would come away regional champs.

That’s exactly how things played out with a senior, Katelyn Byerley, making the shot of her career to win the game. I had a birds-eye view standing behind the net when the shot barely snuck in.

pitcher used only eight innings all season.

The Hawks got in jam early when starting pitcher Nico Giuffre gave up three runs on two walks, a hit batter and error.

With only one out in the first inning, Dalton Hermes came on in relief.

Hermes had been scheduled to start, with top pitcher Noah Campos on deck for Tuesday. Unfortunately, Campos injured his ankle over the weekend and was unavailable.

Hermes got Oregon on the scoreboard first following a bunt by Eli Rufer, one of two bunts singles in the game for him.

“Team-wise, this was the best bunting we’ve done. We weren’t making contact, so we had to,” Girton said.

Riley Birnbaum also singled and scored.

After Tanner Clayton scored, the lead was cut to 9-4 after four innings.

Then, the Hawks made it happen on defense with a slick double play from second baseman Giuffre to shortstop Birnbaum to first baseman Zach Crandall.

With the Hawk dugout fired up after that play, they cut the lead to 9-8 on four more runs, three of which came after two outs.

Nolan Thomas scored on a passed ball, Josh Sitze ripped a hard grounder past first base, driving in two more runs and Crandall scored on a balk by Wynkoop, who came in to replace Barnett.

With Oregon trailing 10-8 with two outs in the sixth, it was Birnbaum driving in Hermes on a single.

“We got down early and that hurt,” Girton said. “Dalton was tremendous for us after the spot we put him in. He and Nick Alexander are the only seniors. Even though we lost, the way we came back bodes well for out future. We just have to get out of the Jekyll and Hyde syndrome of being bad and good.”

May 8 James Morrison, 57, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail in lieu of a full cash bond of $6,447 pending a court appearance.

May 13 Deputies responded to the 10,000 block of North Illinois 2 at 8:34 a.m. for a crash involving an injury.

A car driven by Kaitlyn Lawson, 20, of Dixon was northbound in the 10,000 block when it went off of the east side of the roadway while negotiating a curve and struck a culvert.

The vehicle then crossed back over both lanes before coming to rest in the west side of the ditch.

OBITUARY FAYE M. HADLEY Faye Marie Hadley, 92, of Polo, went home to meet her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, May 12, 2019 at Rock River Hospice and Home of Sterling.

Faye was born on Oct. 14, 1926 in Eldena, the daughter of Jess and Alice (Fisher) Gowan.

She married George M. Hadley on June 13, 1943 in Rock Falls. He preceded her in death on June 8, 2011.

Faye and her husband farmed all their years, the last 52 years near Hazelhurst.

Faye loved gospel music and played piano for church services and nursing homes, beginning at age 13 and continued until her death.

Visitation will be on Friday, May 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Schilling Funeral Home, Sterling and from 9 to 10 a.m. prior to services at the church.

Burial will take place at Oak Knoll Memorial Park in Sterling.

OBITUARIES EUGENE O. MYERS Eugene O. Myers, 71, of Forreston, died on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at home peacefully in his sleep.

Eugene was born in Freeport on June 20, 1947 to Milford and Helen (Wagner) Myers.

He married Eileen V. Landon on Oct. 19, 1968 in Clinton, Iowa.

Eugene was a 1965 graduate of Leaf River High School.

He worked for more than 25 years at Quebecor in Mt. Morris.

He was a vendor at the Stephenson County Farmer’s Market for more than 35 years.

He delivered newspapers for more than 10 years for the Freeport Journal Standard.

Eugene loved the outdoors and enjoyed trapping, mushroom hunting, watching and feeding birds, and gardening.

Eugene was devoted to God. He enjoyed everything about trains.

Eugene will be missed by his wife, Eileen; son, Christopher (Sarah) Myers, of Hartford, Wisconsin; daughters, Ronda (Jeff) Lindsay, of Lanark, and Sheila (Mike) Piper, of Ohio, Illinois; eight grandchildren, Kadie, Levi, Becky, Doran, Angela, Andrew, Cail and Abigail; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and a daughter.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. at BurkeTubbs Funeral Home in Forreston.

LaVonne Doris (Moring) Vogt, 94, previously from Forreston, died on Sunday May 12, 2019.

LaVonne was born on Aug. 22, 1924, the daughter of John and Gertie (Reints) Moring.

She married Eugene C. Vogt on Nov. 14, 1945 in Freeport.

For many years she worked as a secretary, bookkeeper, supplies delivery, and architect for the family construction business.

She also worked at the Forreston School cafeteria and for a brief time at Micro Switch, and also worked with Gene as the concessionaires at the White Pines State Park for 10 years.

LaVonne is survived by her son, Terry Allen Vogt, of Maui, Hawaii; daughter, Joyce Lorraine (Craig) LeBaron, of Freeport; sister-in-law, Lois E. (Roger) Bruckner, of Greenville, South Carolina; grandchildren, Tyler (Melissa) Vogt, of Forreston, Tricia (Mick) Franklin, of Winnebago, and Jennifer (Joe Scurek) LeBaron, of Arlington Heights; great-grandchildren, Allison Franklin, Krista Franklin, Jessica Franklin, all of Winnebago, and Taylor Vogt, Marisa Vogt and Hailee Vogt, all of Forreston; and

many nieces and nephews.

Lavonne was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Eugene; her parents, daughter-in-law, Joann Vogt; three brothers, Clarence (Mary) Moring, Mervin (Florence) Moring, and Lloyd (Johanna) Moring; and in-laws, Clay and Rosa Vogt.

A celebration of life was held on May 16 at BurkeTubbs Funeral Home in Freeport with Pastor Brian LeBaron officiating.

Burial was at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Freeport.
