Petting Zoo a hit with the kids...and kid FFA members show off livestock skills and ag safety measures

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com Friday’s sunny skies and spring-like temps were embraced wholeheartedly by Oregon Elementary School students, but one kid, in particular, could not contain her enthusiasm.

Felicity, a 6-month-old goat, owned by Oregon FFA member Sophie Hughes, bleated her way through the club’s lunch break and even made a break for it herself when she slipped through her collar running toward all the other “kids” playing on the nearby playground.

But her escape was short-lived, as she was corralled by Hughes with the help of fellow FFA member Adam Merrill.

“I am hoping she’ll take a nap soon,” said Hughes, an OHS sophomore and FFA member.

Felicity was one of several farm animals who greeted students and anybody else who stopped by at the FFA’s annual Spring Ag Safety Day and Petting Zoo behind the Oregon Elementary School on Friday afternoon.

“We have 17 FFA students who are either assisting here today or who brought in their animals or drove their tractor to school today to help with this event,” said Oregon High School ag teacher and FFA advisor Josh Nelson. “We’ve had students from OES, preschool kids from the Oregon Park District, and just members of the public stop by.”

by Earleen Hinton pet a sheep, horse, goat, or chicken or sit in the cab of a farm tractor.

“The goal is for all attendees to see the latest farm machinery and to be able to identify blind spots that farmers experience while driving their equipment on the roadways,” Nelson said.

Preschooler Tinley Fry was all smiles as she sat in the seat of one of the tractors with her bright pink bow shining in the sunlght.

OES kids also participated in a scavenger hunt designed to help them learn more about farm animals.

Raina Cattaline, 18-months, of Oregon, toddled around the tub of chicks and ducklings, but stopped short when asked if she wanted to hold one.

Hunter Kremske, 5, of Oregon, didn’t hesitate as he leaned in to pet Emma, one of FFA member Samantha Bowers’ sheep she and her mom brought to the event.

Bowers, a sophomore and FFA member, hand-crafted informative signs about her animals and posted around their pens.

“Our FFA members are here to answer questions and talk their animals.” Nelson said.

BUILDING PROJECT

Local congregation breaks ground for new church Ceremony was held May 5 at Pine Creek Christian Church The Pine Creek Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), of rural Polo, held a groundbreaking service and ceremony May 5 for their new church building.

The new building will replace the present church building which was built in the 1860s at the intersection of Penn Corner and Lowell Park Roads.

Many changes and lots of history have taken place within those walls.

There are presently families with four-plus generations attending worship services here.

The congregation is looking forward to many more years making new history and serving the community in the new building.

Summer programs to begin on June 10 During the summer of 2018, Encore! Mt. Morris welcomed its first artist-in-residence Brittney Meyer, who added so much art-related fun to Mt. Morris’s summer of art experiences.

This year, the new artist-in-residence will arrive on June 3 and serve as our AiR through Aug. 9.

Rachel Oliver, an art therapy major at Augustana College and a resident of Colorado, will be starting summer programming the week of June 10, including regular Encore! Kids weekly sessions

on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon for grades 1-3 and Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. for grades 4-6; Friday evening walk-on art activities during the band concert; plein-air painting experiences for kids and adults on campus; art activities of interest to adults of all ages, including senior citizens (many ideas are in the works).

AJ’s Garden Tractor Jamboree plans 10th Show Preparations are underway for the 10th annual AJ’s Garden Tractor Jamboree on Saturday, May 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1675 S. Columbian Rd., southwest of Oregon.

“As the weather has warmed over the last week or so we are all looking forward to another fun and exciting day,” said host AJ Hinrichs. “There is plenty of room for parking and garden tractors. Last year was we had over 250 garden tractors and we hope to increase that to at least 300 this year.”

Collectors from all over the Midwest bring their tractors out for a chance to share their enthusiasm for these pint sized pieces of history.

“We have had people come from as far away as Minneapolis, Minnesota and tractors from as far back as the 1940s,” said co-host Lisa Hinrichs, “There is something for everyone to enjoy at the show.”

A charity auction will be held at 12 p.m. with baked goods, parts, trees and a custom wagon for a garden tractor.

All proceeds will be donated to the Blackhawk Crossing 4-H Club to pay membership dues, programming, and

support community service projects.

Enjoy a pork chop or steak sandwich while watching kids of all ages take a turn on the tractor teeter totter.

Admission is $5 per person ages 5 and older.

Area seniors invited to compete in Brain Games Sign up by May 20 for local event at Mt. Morris Senior Center The Association of Illinois Senior Centers, the Illinois Department on Aging, and the Mt. Morris Senior Center will host a free Illinois State Senior Brain Games competition

for area senior citizens on Tuesday, May 21 at 6 p.m. at the senior center, 9 E. Front St., Mt. Morris.

The Senior Brain Games Competition is an exciting statewide program that provides Illinois adults age 50 and older the opportunity to showcase and celebrate a lifetime of knowledge in a team event.

Since no registration fee is charged for this program, every senior will have a chance to com-

pete.

This will be a team trivia event, consisting of four rounds of play — each round consisting of five questions.

Questions will be from a variety of different categories, similar to the categories in Trivial Pursuit, and teams will have to be strategic with how they earn points with their answers.

Local Senior Brain Games com-

petitions are being held throughout Illinois in 2019.

First place teams will advance to regional semi-final competitions that will lead to the State Final competition, to be held at the 2019 Illinois State Fair on Senior Day, Monday, Aug. 12.

By Karen Merlak We have been blessed with two days of beautiful sunshine after receiving more rain that we expected.

We know that even in the storms, God is with us. For a loving Father that never leaves our side, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by June Schafer.

We had a full church this morning with many special guests including Neil Deupree, Regional Elder, Angee Jordan Byrd and Eli Rolon Jeong, Associate Regional Ministers. Mayor Doug Knapp, Phil Fossler, and Mark Ebert were our special

guests for the morning, as well.

Our special music was a very special gift from Doug Knapp, singing and playing piano for the song, “Confidence.”

Our church family always enjoys listening to Doug and visiting with him and his wife, Dawn.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for Katelyn, Laura, Harper, JoJo, and Amelia.

Charlotte showed the children our plans for the new building.

This is an exciting time for our church as we continue to build a physical building and build His family of followers.

After the church service, our church family and guests headed out to the building site for the official groundbreaking blessing, ceremony, and pictures.

We have many prayers, hopes, and plans for this building and how we will use it for His service.

When the ceremonies were completed, everyone was invited downstairs for a wonderful dinner.

Everyone enjoyed visiting into the early afternoon. We are ready to put

our trust in God and watch the progress of our new church.

This past Saturday morning, the men of our church met for their regular breakfast meeting in the church basement.

The meal was hosted by Ron Baker. Larry Riffle, John Engel, Jim Hopkins, Don Hay, and Pastor Charlotte Hoppe were in attendance to enjoy the meal and fellowship.

Charlotte Hoppe and I met for a long overdue dinner and chat on Friday evening.

Bonding over great food and fellowship is one of my favorite parts in this church family at Pine Creek.

This morning, there was discussion between two of the youngest children in our congregation.

Amelia and Harper, both just two years old, were both explaining that the person they were sitting with was their own mom and the other child couldn’t have her.

Several of us were giggling at their realization. Both girls know exactly who they belong to.

This conversation has me thinking of who I belong to and who

belongs to me.

I have my children, brother, sister-in-law, nephews, and other family members that claim me as their own.

I have an entire church family that would argue the same. I belong to all of them and they all belong to me.

Most importantly, I know that God will claim me. I am His child.

Just as important, I am claiming Him as my own. He is my Father, my Savior, my everything.

Unlike the girls who were not ready to share their moms, I am ready to share my Father.

He has claimed each of you, maybe without your knowledge.

You are His child. Come and meet this loving Father and find the One that loves and claims you as His own.

My hope continues to be that we will fill our churches with those who are tired, worn, and seeking the love of our Father.

This is the time to be renewed in the fact that we are not alone. He has claimed each one of us.

In partnership with Encore! Mt. Morris, the Mt. Morris Senior Center and several local artists, we present Graphically Speaking: The Power of Visual Storytelling.

May 18 at 9 a.m. – Hands–on Artist Workshop with Will Haun. This workshop is for artists age 12 and up.

If you want to learn how to create your own comic book style hero, this is the workshop for you.

Haun is a Rockford artist, creator of Weird, Weird West comic book series.

Steven Beltran named Illinois CPO of the Year Leaf River man is a 19-year veteran of Conservation Police

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Conservation Police Officer Steven Beltran, of Leaf River, was recently named Illinois Conservation Police Officer of the Year by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and IDNR Conservation Police.

Beltran is a 19-year veteran of the Conservation Police and is based in northwest Illinois.

“Illinois Conservation Police Officers like Steven Beltran represent the best of the best in law enforcement in the State of Illinois,” said IDNR Director Colleen Callahan.

“Our CPOs work hard every day to help keep Illinois residents and visitors to our state safe, be it in our state parks, on our waterways, or wherever they’re needed in counties and communities urban and rural.”

The award was presented at the annual ceremony on April 17 in Springfield.

“I am so humbled and honored to be this year’s Illinois Conservation Police Officer of the Year. I really do love what I do and this is just awesome,” Beltran said. “Northwest Illinois is such a beautiful place to live and work. I am so honored to receive this award and will continue to diligently protect the people of Illinois and its natural resources.”

Nominators cited Beltran for being an efficient, effective officer in all facets of work for the IDNR. They noted his skills in the digital age have assisted in his investigative work and benefited his fellow officers.

The Award of Merit, for achievements in performing their duties with outstanding skill, diligence, productivity, judgment, and responsibility, was presented to Sergeant Anthony Petreikis, Illinois City, and CPO Bradley Thompson, Canton.

Two new members were inducted into the Oregon Lions Club on April 11 during the club’s regular meeting at the VFW in Oregon.

Diane Bausman, the executive director of the Blackhawk Waterways Convention and Visitors Bureau, spoke to Oregon Lions at the April 11 meeting.

Bausman said spoke about the 175 million dollar economic impact of tourism in the four counties she represents. She said that In Carroll, Ogle, Lee and Whiteside counties there are many opportunities

for locals, as well as those from metropolitan areas, to enjoy nature through biking, walking and hiking besides enjoying the historic points of interest and charm that are prevalent in our area.

It is in our best interest she said, to develop and promote this area as much possible.

Program on Prairie Pirates slated for Monday, May 13 in Dixon The Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society will present a program titled “Prairie Pirates� on Monday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at the society office at 113 S. Hennepin Ave., Dixon.

Heinz Supan, of Ottawa, a noted historian, will speak on the Banditti

of the Prairie, a lawless gang that sowed chaos in Ogle, Lee, and surrounding counties as they rustled horses and cattle and robbed banks and businesses in the 1800s.

If you are cleaning out old things to make way for new or simply downsizing to have more space,  don’t throw your unwanted items away.  Save items for the annual Chana School Museum rummage sale. Why have the garbage man take perfectly good items big and small to the landfill?  Box and bag good clean items for the non-for-profit benefit to be held on Memorial Day weekend, Friday, May 24 and Saturday, May 25.

It is not too early to begin your sorting out and packaging up your unwanted items.

We accept clean items such as furniture, clothes, household and kitchen items, books, holiday decorations, and more.  We do not take large entertainment centers, large appliances, curtain rods and blinds, and non-working items. The Chana School Foundation was formed to save the 1883 schoolhouse that once sat in Chana. The building was going to be destroyed. The volunteer committee, the Chana School Foundation, was formed and successfully moved the schoolhouse to Park East in Oregon in 1998.  Since that time the school museum has served the area communities. This spring nearly 400 students will come for an all day living history experience from the 1800s. This not-for-profit project is run by volunteers and maintained by donations and grants.

Your donations are very important to the Chana School Museum. We are looking forward to your donated items and any cash donations from the public.  After the fundraiser, clothing goes to help area nursing home residents and other sale items get packed off to other not-for-profits who have fundraisers in the area.

Volunteers have fun with one another while setting up for the sale and then helping during the sale.

The work of many hands makes for light work for all.  Mark your calendars to bring in your donations for this fund raiser and make sure you get to the sale early before all the bargains are gone.  There is something for everyone.

Someone’s discarded item may be a treasure to someone else.

The Horticulture department at Kishwaukee College will be holding their Spring Plant Sale on May 10 from 7:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the Greenhouse located on the north side of campus.

The Spring Plant Sale includes annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, zonal geraniums and large specialty annuals.

There are also pre-planted containers of various sizes, hanging baskets, and large bags of quality potting mix (2.8 cu. ft.) for sale.

Horticulture staff and students will be on site during the sale to assist patrons and answer gardening and/or planting questions. Staff and students can assist with plant selection to suit specific needs or wants.

She later took second in the 300 hurdles and anchored the 1,600 relay.

“Every point counts. I felt a burst coming out of the blocks and just feel really, really good tonight,” Hopkins said.

Besides competing on its own Landers-Loomis track complex, another advantage Oregon had over Dixon, RF and ‘Bago was that the other three distance-laden teams took away points from each other in events 800 meters and longer.

“Another factor is this meet happens so quickly (2 1/2 hours), it makes it tougher on the distance events,” Woodward said. “I was still pleased with a lot of PRs for us.

Grace Baldwin won the pole vault (10-6), Miyah Brown the high jump (5-0), Leigha DeRango the discus (112-4) and Natalia Martino the 1,600 (5:19).

Byron had the meet’s only double winner in sprinter Kendra Jackson (13.12 and 27.10). The Tigers placed fifth with 53 points.

In the 1,600 relay, Bre DeHaan, Easley, Lyndi Kenney joined Hopkins for a PR of 4:19 to finish second to Rock Falls (4:16). The group of DeHaan, Katlyn Ramirez, Faith

Marquardt and Kenney ran 11:00 for fourth in the 3,200 relay.

Even though Oregon is the smallest school in the conference, they had more depth than any other school, as evidenced by the 32 points picked up in the relays.

“It’s pretty special to be the smallest schools and win the meet,” Schneiderman said.

Other place winners for Oregon were Cermak (13.52) fourth in the 100, DeHaan (1:04.92) and Ashley Diehl (1:05.42) fourth and fifth in the 400, Nyderek (50.42) third in the 300 hurdles, Schmidt (28.35) fourth in the 200, Jenae Bothe (107-6) fourth in the discus and Kenney (8-6) in the pole vault.

This Friday, Oregon will host the sectional and be favored to win it, along with defending champion Winnebago. Field events start at 4:00 pm with running finals at 5:45.

In the 25-year history of the Big Northern Conference girls track & field meet, only four schools (Burlington-Central, Byron, Dixon, Johnsburg) have ever been champs.

With a good start in the field events that carried over to the track, Oregon can finally be added to that list.

In dethroning Dixon, winner of the last four years, the Hawks scored 126 points on May 2 compared to 103 for the Duchesses, who tied with Winnebago for third.

“Congrats to Oregon. We knew we’d have to beat them on the track,” Dixon coach Brandon Woodward said. “They’ve got a little of everything - sprinters, jumpers, throwers.

Credit to coach Schneiderman for putting a team together like this.”

Lydia Cermak gave the Hawks an early spark in the long jump with a 16-foot-4 person best, moving her from the No. 4 seed to first place.

Right afterwards, Cynthia Nyderek (33-6) and Abi Hopkins (33-0) finished first and second in the triple jump for 18 more points.

Strangely, Cermak credited Oregon soccer coach Seger Larson for her success.

“He’s the one whose been helping the most,” said Cermak of the former jumping state qualifier for Indian Creek.

Brenna Noon and Jenae Bothe dominated the shot put with 38-6 and 36-5 efforts for another 18 and things continued to look promising for Oregon as they won the 4 X 100 relay over Dixon, 58.24 to 59.26.

“Honestly, before this year I never thought we’d ever win the conference meet,” said senior Cristina Tranchina, who joined freshman Elizza Easley and sophomores Jadyn Bothe and Erin Schmidt on the relay. “The young talent we have has made the difference.”

In the closest race of the meet and year for Oregon, the 4 X 200 relay of Easley, Schmidt, Bothe and Cermak edged Byron 1:49.92-1:49.93.

“We’re grinders,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said. “We did it in the 400 relay too with shaky hand offs. All these girls put in the work in cruddy weather all spring.”

Records fall at boys’ Ogle County track meet Mennen wins the pole vault

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com The highlight of the 47th Annual Ogle County Track Meet were two records by winning boys team Forreston-Polo and one by Jake Mennen of Oregon.

In the 800-meter relay, Evan Kelsey, Don Christensen, Jordan Neuschwander and Brady Webb ran 1:31.96 to break Byron’s previous record of 1:32.

“That’s a start for us. We’ll need to get it down lower at state,” F-P coach Bob Wagner said.

In the discus, junior Jace Coffey continued his hot streak with a throw of 166-feet-6.5. That broke the record of 162-8, set by Andy Ballard of Oregon in 2001.

In the pole vault, Mennen not only broke the county record (14-6) from 1983 by John Place of Rochelle, but he also broke the Oregon school record of the same height by Ashton Rutherford four years ago. At a nearly deserted vaulting put, Mennen went 14-7 ½ inch on his third attempt.

“I’m really proud of Jake,” Oregon coach Jim Spratt said. “Not only does he have talent, dedication and character, but he puts the work in to become a great pole vaulter. He’s also a great mentor to our young vaulters.”

F-P won the boys meet with 127 to 113 for Rochelle. Oregon was third at 59. Claiming individual wins for F-P were Brady Webb (100, 200, long jump), Garett Badertscher (shot put) and Bennett Soltow (110 hurdles).

With favored Oregon’s varsity sitting out the rescheduled meet, Rochelle won the girls portion with 148 points. F-P was third with 56 points and got a first place from Alyssa Wakenight in the discus at 89-7.

In regard to past county boys records, Oregon still has the 3,200 relay (8:04) from 2003, Garren Beck the 300 hurdles (39.62) from 2007 and Martin McCormick the 400 (49.49) from 2005.

Mason Wright of F-P has the triple jump record from 2017 and AJ Christensen the 110 hurdles (14.70) from last year.

For the girls, Terah Cheatham of Polo has the 3,200 run (11:38) record from 2005. In the 800 relay, Forreston holds that record (1:48.86) from 2003.

Ganymedes first home game is May 19 The Oregon Ganymedes Vintage Base Ball Club started its 2019 season on May 5 with a double header against their cross county rivals the Creston Regulators and Lemont Quarrymen in Creston.

2019 marks the 15th anniversary season for the Ganymedes, a volunteer educational outreach program of the Chana School Museum.

Since 2005, the team has been playing other vintage teams all over the Midwest following the early rules of base ball.

The Ganymedes first home game will be on Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. against the Somonauk Blue Stockings on the lawn near the Chana

School Museum located at Oregon Park East.

Spectators should bring their own lawn chairs and admission to these historic rules base ball games are free.

Crunch time has begun for spring sports teams

As this is written, soccer regionals have already begun and Oregon is has advanced to Saturday’s final at Genoa-Kingston as a No. 2 sub-sectional seed.

Overall, the sectional is wide open without that one top-notch team, except perhaps Stillman Valley, who took second to powerhouse Dixon in the BNC. Oregon (13-6-1) has won seven of its last eight games and could play No. 3 seed Byron in the regional final.

The Hawks edged Byron 2-1 in the regular season. The regional champ appears destined to face No. 1 seed Rockford Lutheran in the first game of the sectional.

Oregon and Byron tied for third in the league with 5-3 records, a ½ game ahead of Lutheran in the standings.

One advantage for Lutheran, loser of its last five games against 3A/4A teams, is having played a much tougher conference schedule than Oregon.

As I learned from Hawk coach Seger Larson, it’s not so much how the ball bounces, but rather where

the players are positioned.

One particular soccer player caught my eye at the girls BNC track meet last week and that was Leah Watters, who is also a state qualifier in cross country.

With Oregon only having one entrant in the 3,200-meter run, I told Leah it was a shame she couldn’t be out there running.

She said she’d like to, but athletes at Oregon can only be in one sport. That policy has been in place for a while at Oregon and could be reviewed.

As explained by Mike Lawton, the school has to be careful about letting someone come in and take another person’s spot without putting all the time and practice in. Some schools allow it, some don’t. For instance, Polo’s Reid Taylor did track and baseball last year.

Track is unique in that you need as many bodies as possible to fill out the 18 events. One reason for

Oregon’s success in girls track is having the depth other teams don’t.

But, they lack it in the distances and Watters could provide points and possibly advance downstate.

The 2A schools like Dixon and Rock Falls have distance runners, but not so much in 1A. Congratulations to Jeff Leon of WRHL radio for his induction into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall-of-Fame as a media member. At ceremonies over the weekend at Bloomington, Leon was one of about 150 individual of the 2019 HOF class. In preceding years, there were also huge numbers inducted.

That seems like a lot of people making the cut for a hall-of-fame, but the IBCA tries to be as inclusive as possible, perhaps as a way to draw interest into a much-desired Illinois Museum of Basketball.

The museum has been a dream of the association for decades and plans were for location in Pontiac.

That fell through earlier this year, with (lack of) finances cited as the main reason.

Fundraising continues for the museum, which would encompass basketball at every level played in Illinois.

In baseball, Forreston earned a No. 2 sub-sectional seed and will also serve as host. Newman, which beat the Cardinals 10-6 on April 20, are the top seed. The only way those two would meet is if they both advanced to the sectional final, which is a strong likelihood.

Forreston is as good as any team in that sectional complex. River Ridge is No. 1 seed in the other sub-sectional and Forreston whipped them earlier.

As I learned from Forreston coach Mike McClellan, it’s not so much how the ball bounces, but rather the depth and quality of pitchers.

The ability to throw strikes this season should also pay dividends.

Can Oregon win the girls track and field sectional?

I’m not sure from before, but the IHSA records that go back into 1996 show no sectional wins for the Hawks.

It would be a fitting way to cap off the area track scene before heading downstate, with perhaps the most girls advancing ever.

Oregon’s 800 relay has the No. 8 time (1:49) in 1A according to athletic.net, one of seven top-10 marks on display at the sectional.

OBITUARY JUDY A. TILTON

later, she married Ralph Tilton on Oct. 5, 1996 at the Rockford College Chapel in Rockford.

Two beautiful grandchildren Jenna and Ellis were the light of her life.

Ralph preceded her in death on July 30, 1998. She was also preceded by her nephew Sgt. Jeremie Kobler

wrote the history of her family.

Her volumes of research were printed and culminated in the discovery of ancestors and conquistadors in ancient Spain.

Her studies ranged over 20 years, a gift to all of those who remain and follow.

An adoring aunt to her three nephews, Jeremie, Matthew, and Jason Kobler and their children, Johnathen, Madysen, Jakob, Joseph, Alice, Chloe, and Connor Kobler, she was cherished by her family.

They affectionately named her AJ who won a special place in their hearts.

As a sister she was a rose on the vine, loving, adoring and beloved in all ways.

Finding love once more many years

in 2012.

She believed that Heaven hath in store what she had lost in life.

May 3 Jered Allison, 20, of Freeport, was arrested for unlawful possession of cannabis 30-100 grams, unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop at 11:23 p.m. in the 9,000 block of North Illinois 26.

The K-9 unit assisted with the investigation. Allison was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Nicholas Pillion, 18, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear and resisting a peace officer. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on bonds of $1,500 (10%) and $331 (full cash) pending a court appearance.

Charles Webber, 37, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while license suspended and no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at 7:30 p.m. in the 3,000 block of South Illinois 251.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Judy Ann Marquez-Lamz-Tilton, 69, died on Thursday, May 2, 2019, of cardiac arrest related to heart failure.

She was born on May 16, 1949 in Laredo Texas to Dagoberto and Dorothy (Sanner) Marquez.

She attended Oregon Community High School and upon graduation in 1967 sought further education which led her to corporative employment.

She was a life-time member of the Methodist Church.

Judy married her sweetheart James Lamz on June 5, 1971 at the Oregon United Methodist Church. Jim preceded her in death on May 29, 1973.

For 35 years Judy was employed as a secretary for Commonwealth Edison.

An avid gardener, she was awarded many accolades and recognition for her amazing flowers, yard, and beautiful home.

A genealogist, she searched and

Judy’s battle with heart failure endured over a period of three years.

She often thought of this song which gave her strength.

“When the river was deep, I didn’t falter When the mountain was high, I still believed When the valley was low, it didn’t stop me, no I knew you were waiting, I knew you were waiting for me” From the song “I Knew You Were Waiting for Me.” Funeral services were held on May 9 at Farrell Holland Gale Funeral Home in Oregon with the Rev. David Rogula officiating.

Burial was at Daysville Cemetery.

A memorial fund has been established in Judy’s name for the Wounded Warriors Project.

May 1 Van Meneweather, 28, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

He was held in the Ogle County Jail on $633 (full cash) bond pending a court appearance.

Matthew Gabbard, 30, of Dixon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. He was held in the Ogle County Jail on $628 (full cash) bond pending a court appearance.

May 5 Deputies responded at 6:13 p.m. to a single vehicle motorcycle accident in the 17,000 block of West U.S. 52.

A southbound motorcycle driven by Mike Elvin, 55, of Ashton, traveled off the west edge of the roadway and then overturned multiple times before coming to rest in the west ditch embankment.

Elvin and a passenger on the motorcycle, Carla Elvin, 44, of Ashton, both fell from the motorcycle as it overturned.

Mike was transported to KSB Hospital, Dixon, by Polo EMS for treatment of injuries.

Carla was also transported to KSB Hospital by Polo EMS and then flown by helicopter to Mercyhealth Hospital, Rockford.

Mike was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and issued tickets for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Deputies were assisted at the scene

by Polo Fire and EMS, Lanark Police, and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.

Nore Hatfield, 54, of Mt. Morris, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for bad checks. Hatfield posted the $3,000 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. She is scheduled to appear in court on May 29.

Michelle Donoho, 23, of Dixon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. She posted the $218 full cash bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail with no further court date.

May 6 Victor Gonzalez, 56, of Chicago, was arrested for no valid driver’s license, operating a uninsured motor vehicle, and speeding after a traffic stop on Interstate 39. He was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

April 29 At 1:23 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 100 block of N. Third Street involving a 2007 Chevrolet driven by Wade V. Buzzard, 46, of Genoa, and a parked 2014 Ford truck owned by the City of Oregon Water Department. No citations were issued.

Jessica L. Murphy, 29, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 8:45 p.m. for speeding, 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

April 30 At 4:13 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 500 block of W. Washington Street involving a 2015 Honda driven by Pamela J. Tauch, 55, of Oregon, and a 2006 Honda driven

by Keshon M. Reed, 16, of Mt. Morris. No citations were issued.

May 2 C. Matthew Christensen, 40, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 3:30 p.m. for disobeying a school crossing guard.

This violation occurred at the intersection of Jefferson and S. 4th Streets.

May 3 Jacob D. Milliman, 17, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 8:39 a.m. for screeching/squealing tires. This violation occurred in the Blackhawk parking lot in the 1000 block of Jefferson Street.

Lorri C. Palmer, 64, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 8:48 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Caitlin A. Johnson, 26, of Freeport, was issued citations at 9:40 p.m. for

operating a vehicle with an expired registration and no valid driver’s license.

These violations occurred in the 700 block of W. Washington Street.

May 4 Jason B. Pasqueno, 22, of Rockford, was arrested at 9:51 p.m. on an outstanding Rockford Police Department warrant for failure to appear. Pasqueno was also issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Pasqueno was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

May 5 Caylee J. Toepfer, 21, of Stillman Valley, was arrested at 12:58 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol and driving while under the influence of alcohol with blood alcohol content greater than .08%. Toepfer was also issued citations for speeding, 53 mph in a 40 mph zone, and improper lane usage. Toepfer was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 1500 block of N. IL Route 2.

Jesse W. Galvan, 32, of Sterling, was arrested at 10:12 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a weapons offense. Galvan was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Seven parking tickets and nine verbal/ written warnings were issued from April 29 through May 5.

Troopers in District 1, which includes Ogle, Lee, Carroll, and Whiteside Counties, issued 360 citations, 573 written warnings, and made 10 criminal arrests.

Speeding accounted for 213 citations, 27 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 33 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

April 23 Eddie L. Barbee, 36, Paw Paw, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped at 7:26 p.m. on Illinois 251 at Hemstock Road in Ogle County and was wanted on five warrants: Ogle County for larceny, warrant for failure to appear.

Aguilar, who had a full cash bond of $721 was released on a $1,000 recognizance bond after a court appearance.

He is scheduled to appear in court on

LaSalle County for disorderly conduct, DeKalb County for failure to appear for shoplifting, Grundy County for failure to appear for obstruction, Kendall County for failure to appear for larceny.

Barbee was also charged with obstructing identification. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

April 24 George P. Cuellar, 37, Cleveland, Oklahoma, was involved in a minor two-vehicle traffic crash at 7:50 p.m. on Interstate 39 northbound at milepost 102 in Ogle County and was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon June 24.

May 7 Bobby G. Tribble, 44, of Rockford, was arrested for possession of a controlled

and aggravated assault after he pointed a loaded 9 mm pistol at the other driver.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

April 27 Daniel A. Stewart, 28, of Sterling, was stopped for improper lane usage at 12:09 a.m. on Second Street at Fifth Avenue in Rock Falls and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, and failure to signal when required. He was released on an I-bond.

Students learn about nature on trip to Taft Campus Chana Education Center visited Lorado Taft Field Campus with a mission to explore the woods.

Students and staff spent the day April 22 learning about the various animals and plants in native Illinois forests and the relationships that they have with each other.

Groups started out with various activities to encourage them to take a closer look at the world around them.

They went on scavenger hunts to locate items typically found in the woods such as fungi and lichens, and nuts and seeds.

They matched paint swatches to colors of various trees, flowers, and rocks.

They also walked through a dry gully to look for fossil patterns in limestone rock.

In the afternoon, the students joined together and participated in a real-life scenario of predator and prey.

Students were split into groups of herbivores, omnivores, and carnivores and had to locate food and water supplies without getting “eaten” or hunted.

Students used a variety of strategies to survive including camouflage, teamwork, and sharing resources.

Student Alex Fuentes told her group leader that she saw the forest as more than just “a bunch of trees.”

When she was looking for items on her scavenger hunt, she was startled to come across a bull snake awakening from hibernation.

“I’ve never seen a snake in the wild like that!” she exclaimed.

Another student Jarrett Christiansen was excited to share how he used camouflage to successfully evade the hunter during the predator-prey game.

He crouched low to the ground and used the area tall grasses to conceal him.

This trip was made possible with funding from the Illinois Biodiversity Field Trip Grant Program awarded by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Illinois Conservation Foundation.

More than $88,000 in donated funds was awarded to 100 recipients throughout Illinois.

Chana Education Center was approved up to $910 to pay for the costs of students attending the day-long learning experience at Taft.

RRRMC EVENT

Mud and fun both flyin’ high at May 5 Mud Bogs Mud and fun were both flyin’ high at the Rock River Riders Motorcycle Club’s annual Mud Bog on Sunday.

Competitors from across northern Illinois and Iowa took part in the club’s mud bog races on the club grounds, located east of Polo on Pines Road, across from the entrance to White Pines State Park.

The Daily Driver Class followed the Open Class competitors whose muscled-up trucks and SUVs roared through the man-made course tossing chunks of mud into the air to the crowd’s delight.

Sunday’s event also included a race for little boggers on their battery-operated toys and the ever-popular and especially messy “run the bog” race for kids and adults.

Remaining club events open to the public for 2018 include the Father’s Day Hill Climb, June 16, 11 a.m.; a Night Time Hill Climb, July 27, 4 p.m.; and Mud Bogs, Aug. 11, 11 a.m.

Admission/donation is $10 for adults.

Children under the age of 12 are admitted for free.
