Empty railroad cars block Pines Road Cause of derailment is undetermined

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The cause of a train derailment near Oregon late Saturday night is undetermined.

“It will be undetermined - either vandalism or employee error,” Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said Tuesday afternoon.

He said railroad officials told him the brakes had been set on the cars.

According to a press release from VanVickle, 17 of 99 empty train cars derailed

just before 10 p.m. at the Pines Road rail crossing just west of Devils Backbone Road.

The rail line is owned by Illinois Railway and is operated by Omni Track.

The cars, with no locomotive attached, were being stored on the rail line between Devils Backbone and Oregon Trail Roads.

“For an unknown reason the rail cars began to roll southeast towards Pines Road where the unaccompanied cars struck a derailing device causing 17 of the 99 empty cars on the line to derail,” the press release read.

Several of the cars came to a rest on Pines Road and in the north ditch area beside the road.

The incident was called in by a motor-

ist. During the derailment one of the rail cars struck and damaged a ComEd utility pole, which was replaced early Sunday morning.

No one was injured in the incident.

VanVickle said the recent extreme weather did not play a part in the derailment.

He said the rail cars had been situated on the rail line since December. The line, which is no longer used, runs to Mt. Morris.

Pines Road was closed to traffic between Devils Backbone and Gale Roads until Monday morning while rail crews cleaned up the wreckage.

The Oregon Fire and Police Departments assisted the sheriff’s department at the scene.

Changes underway for local camp, retreat center Learn more about changes on March 9

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Changes are in the works for the well-known Stronghold Camp and Retreat Center just outside Oregon.

First of all, the center is entering what Executive Director Danny Pierce calls its “third life cycle� to become a self-supporting notfor-profit facility after 57 years of being supported by the Presbyterian Church. “The center will remain a Presbyterian camp and conference center, but it will be free-standing,� he said. “The church is unable to underwrite it as they have in the past.�

Secondly, starting with the banquet room at the Brubaker Center, parts of the facility are being refurbished.

The banquet room was a hub of creative activity last week, as a group of design specialists worked their magic to give it an updated,

more elegant look.

Kathy Boyd, of KB Design, Duluth, Minnesota, brought a group of decorative finishers and muralists from all over the country together for a week-long Re‌Vive retreat aimed at refinishing the large room’s walls and floor.

For the walls, they were trying out what Boyd said is a new product from Italy called Metallo-Fuso which involves applying designs with epoxy and then burnishing it with fine sandpaper to give it a metallic look.

Some walls will have an feathery finish while the focal points get large elegant stenciled designs. Even the storage cabinets will get the treatment.

Re‌Vive goes into non-profit facilities to revitalize them, Boyd said.

Those attending the retreat volunteer their time and expertise and most of the products used are donated, she said. “We want to give back and make it affordable,� Boyd said.

Three local companies have already made sizable donations to the fundraiser, including F.N. Smith Corporation, Central Bank, and Harvard Bank.

If the community raises $10,000, a local foundation will match that amount, totaling $20,000 to be awarded to Oregon teachers.

The Teacher Loan Payoff Program provides up to $20,000 each

year to help qualifying Oregon district teachers pay off their student loan debt.

Teachers who have been with the district for five or more years are eligible to receive up to $5,000 each.

The district is asking for the community’s help in reaching its $10,000 goal. Donations are tax-deductible.

Those interested in making a donation may do so via the OCUSD website or by mailing a check. Cash donations can also be hand-delivered at the district office.

Boyd said during a recent tour she noticed several areas at the Stronghold facility that could do with revitalizing.

“I did talk to Danny about doing something in the fall. It would be nice to keep going with this,” she said.

The room will be completed in time for a special program “Stronghold: Past, Present & Future” on March 9 that will honor the facility’s past and outline its future.

Pierce described the organizational changes as a “parent-child relationship.” The time has come, he said, for Stronghold to pay its own way.

The focus of the center will not change from conferences and retreats but will be expanded.

“We are back in the wedding business,” Pierce said with a grin.

An executive chef was recently hired, and catering may be added at

some point in the future.

Stronghold began in 1928, when Chicago businessman Walter Strong and his wife Josephine bough 360 acres on the west bank of the Rock River north of Oregon.

Influenced by travel in Europe, the Strongs built the castle, which has become a landmark, as their summer home for their family that included five children.

The property remained in the family until after Josephine’s death in 1961, which Pierce sees as the facility’s first life cycle.

The second cycle began in 1962 when the Presbytery of Blackhawk, an association of 75 Presbyterian congregations throughout north and central Illinois, purchased the property and opened it the next summer as a summer camp for youths.

Since then it has grown into a year-round retreat center with five modern buildings and 12 rustic cabins.

The Oregon School District has taken a step to combat a shortage of teachers by implementing a program to attract and keep them.

A recent study by the Illinois Association of Regional Superintendents of Schools found the teacher shortage in Illinois has reached crisis levels.

The district is looking to change the state-wide trend by debuting the Teacher Loan Payoff Program, which will aid qualifying district teachers to pay off their student loans.

To kick-off the first year of the program, OCUSD is asking for the community’s help recruiting and retaining district teachers by making a donation toward the $10,000 goal.

The district hopes to meet the goal in 30 days starting March 4.

“Our goal for the district is to attract and retain good teachers,” Superintendent Tom Mahoney said.

Forreston Toy Show & Craft Fair set for March 9 The Forreston FFA Alumni will hold its 31th Annual Toy Show & Craft Fair on Saturday, March 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Forreston Junior and Senior High School.

The toy show will be held in the Forreston High School gym, and the craft fair will be held in the Forreston Junior High School gym and cafeteria.

A wide variety of items will be

available from vendors at this event.

The toy show and craft fair were created to help people spend a day with friends and families as well as provide funds to support the Forreston High School Agriculture and FFA programs.

The toy show will feature toy tractors, farm equipment, memorabilia, and collectibles.

The event features more than 100

tables of vendors who come from all over the Midwest.

The Forreston FFA Alumni will also have special 31th anniversary Oliver 1650 front wheel assist toy tractors for sale.

The craft fair will have a large number of vendors offering crafts, food, candles, and other items.

On the day of the event, the Forreston FFA Alumni will raffle off

This morning in church, we were greeted by Sandra Ford. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our sweet friends, Kaitlyn, Laura, and Harper.

It was a very exciting week in Polo as the basketball team won the regional title.

We have many talented students in our little town.

Over the past week or so, I noticed a problem with my sump pump.

It seemed to be running, however, the water wasn’t moving.

With the recent thaw and heavy rains, the water started to rise and I called on my wonderfully helpful brother for assistance.

Ben and I inspected the pump and determined it had burned out from overuse.

The pump had probably been running with nowhere to push the water due to the ice and snow.

We can be like that pump working continuously until we burn out.

The good news for us is that we have a God that is comfort for us when we tire out.

He hears our requests for rest and lovingly answers them. Since

we know we are loved, we can be assured that His timing is perfect.

We can learn to trust God. We will find that He is with us in all situations.

He provides guidance when we are lost and comfort for when we are tired.

Building a relationship with our Father over time helps us to build our trust in Him. God loves each of us. He cares for each of us.

We can continue to find comfort in our loving God and get to know Him like He knows each of us.

I continue to be encouraged by readers of this article. I recently received a lovely letter from a reader all the way from Tennessee.

Thank you all for your lovely messages. I hope that God continues to bless you as you have been a blessing to me.

My continued hope is to fill our churches with those who want to know God. Please join us in our little church in the country. There is room for you and your family.

In honor of March as Women’s History Month, Mt. Morris Public Library will host the presentation, “The Journey to Mollie’s War: WACS and WWII” on Monday, March 11 at 6 p.m.

This is a look at one young woman’s journey during her services in the Women’s Army Corp.

It traces the footsteps of women who served in Europe, following Mollie and her fellow Women’s Army Corps members who were

stationed in London, England before D-Day and during the post D-Day German buzz bomb attacks.

The book, “Mollie’s War,” was written in collaboration by Cyndee Schaffer and her 91-year-old mother, Mollie Weinstein Schaffer, based on the letters Mollie sent home to her family while serving as a WAC in Europe during World War II. This event will be co-produced by the Illinois Humanities Road Schol-

ars Speakers Bureau, which invites Illinois authors, artists and educators to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughout the state, enabling local nonprofit organizations to present free-admission cultural programs to their communities.

Cyndee Schaffer is editor of the Midwest Writers Association monthly newsletter.

She holds a bachelor of arts degree in Math Education from

Northwestern University and a master of science degree in Curriculum Development from DePaul University.

A committee of readers evaluated the plays and selected those included in the festival of plays.

Jane Addams was a Stephenson County native and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Founder of Chicago’s Hull House, Addams is considered one of the leaders in the field of social work.

The plays produced for the festival are based on the life, writings, and work of Jane Addams.

Tickets are $10 for adults; $8 for seniors and $6 for students. A $2 transaction fee is charged for every ticket purchased.

Stacy Noble sworn in as probation officer Stacy Noble was sworn in as Ogle County Court Services’ newest adult probation officer on Feb. 6.

Ogle County Circuit Judge Robert T. Hanson performed the ceremony.

Noble’s responsibilities will consist of DUI and domestic violence cases. She will also serve on the DUI Specialty Court team.

Noble comes to Ogle County Probation from Lutheran Social Services after 18 years, most recently working as an intake supervisor.

The Byron Forest Preserve District will be offering the fourth of its free 2019 Winter Lecture Series on Sunday, March 3 beginning at 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum, located at 7993 North River Road, Byron.

Chicago actor R.J. Lindsey will portray English naturalist, geologist and biologist Charles Darwin.

“Learn about Darwin’s five year around the world trip aboard the HMS Beagle and the many natural wonders that he uncovered along the way that led to the development of his theory of evolution,” said Mark Herman, superintendent of recreation. “His book ‘On the Origin of the Species’ published in 1859 transformed the way that we understand the natural world with ideas that, in his day, were nothing short of revolutionary.

“Darwin’s observations first gave us insight into the fantastic diversity of life on Earth and its origins, including our own species,” Herman

Bank donates to Rock River Center Stillman Bank recently ended its “Purchase with a Purpose� Debit Card campaign in which a $1 donation was made to local charities with every Stillman Bank Debit Card transaction up to $20,000.

Stillman Bank officials have been presenting checks for $2,000 to 10 non-profit organizations throughout the Rock River Valley.

One of the 10 charities chosen to receive the funds from this campaign was the Rock River Center.

Initially called the Yellow Bird Senior Citizens Drop-in Center in 1975, then later Ogle County Senior Services, the Rock River Center has remained focused on older adults and the services they need to remain healthy in mind, body, and spirit while providing a solution to the social isolation of a growing population of older adults.

DEMMER OPEN HOUSE Demmer to host open house at new office on March 2 State Representative Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) invites residents of the 90th Legislative House District to join him for an open house this Saturday, March 2 at his new legislative office, located at 105 E. First Street in Dixon.

The open house will take place from 9-11 a.m. “Until January of this year, my district office was located in Rochelle. It was a wonderful location that served my staff and me very well,� Demmer said. “I was also able to hold meetings in Dixon at the office of Senator Tim Bivins.

When the Senator retired, I decided to

relocate our principal office to Dixon, but my staff remains available and accessible through traveling individual appointments with constituents and mobile office hours throughout the 90th District.�

Senator Brian Stewart will also attend the Saturday open house and greet guests.

FFA IN THE NEWS

The Forreston FFA Alumni will be accepting sealed bids on a Massey Ferguson 1130 diesel tractor that has been refurbished by students.

The tractor is a late model 1964 that has 4,700 hours and approximately 100 horsepower.

It has updated features that were not available on early 1964 versions.

Larry and Dawn Mathiot donated this tractor to the Forreston FFA Alumni. It was a part of the Robert and Joan LaBudde Trust of Cedar Creek Farms, Cedarville.

The students and their supervisors made a variety of repairs and improvements on the tractor.

Some of these features include: new front tires, rear tires in good condition with power adjust rims, new engine clutch, new PTO clutch, repaired three-point hitch, new alternator and regulator, and

original paint.

Rockey finally made a basket to break an 8-minute Indian scoring drought of only one point. By the time Ayres put in another score, Dakota had gone on an 11-0 run and took a 25-24 lead.

“We didn’t give up,” Bartelt.

“What hurt us were turnovers.

That’s been our bugaboo all year.”

With a chance to close the game out in regulation, it was three turnovers on the final four possessions for Dakota, the last of which was defensive specialist Hunter Rogers tying up Carter Drake on a drive to basket for the potential game winning score.

In the first overtime, Singley gave the Cardinals a 31-29 lead, but Ethan Greenfield missed two free throws. Heinz rebounded the second miss and converted one of two free throws. Rogers added another charity toss, but consecutive FT misses

by Rogers and Fyock gave Dakota life.

It was Flynn scoring a lay-up with 14 seconds left for a 33-33 tie and a Greenfield shot in the corner clanked off.

Forreston missed six of eight free throws at the end of regulation and in the first OT, including three

by Fyock, normally an 86 percent shooter.

“That’s what I hate most – missing free throws,” Fyock said. “I was freaked out.”

Flynn made it 36-33 in the extra period two, but Fyock came right back for a 3 of his own to tie the game. Even though Forreston had five straight offensive rebounds on a single possession, they couldn’t get the ball to go in and settled for a 38-38 tie heading into the third overtime.

Greenfield got his shooting touch back and went 4-for-4 from the line in the third OT and Fyock added an old-fashioned 3-point play. That 45-42 lead was erased by Flynn with his 3-pointer with one second left.

“We didn’t have a plan to foul, but we didn’t plan to give up and open three either,” Schneiderman said.

In the four overtimes, it was the same 10 players on the floor for both teams until Trey Engelbracht and Rockey fouled out for Dakota.

“Dakota took a lot of our stuff away – for a whole game and half,” Schneiderman said.

Every single person in the jampacked Forreston gym knew who would be getting the ball in the final seconds of a 4-overtime championship game of the Forreston Regional.

The bigger question was whether or not Braeden Fyock would send the home team into delirium after 16 minutes of tension-filled overtime.

This, after another 32 minutes of back-and-forth regulation play between the Dakota and Forreston basketball squads in a 1A regional final that only provided a 45-45 tie with seconds winding down in a fourth overtime.

Someone had to eventually win, but would the game go into a fifth extra period or would Fyock break free for a game-winning open shot?

With Dakota’s defense stalking his every move, the 5-10 senior guard finally managed to find a sliver of space near the top of the key and quickly released and arching shot that found nothing but net.

It was over and the Cardinal crowd was finally able to let go of pent-up anxiety and explode onto the court to share in the celebration with Fyock and teammates.

“What a crazy game. They’d tie it.

We’d tie it,” Fyock said.

It took plenty of work for the final play to come to fruition for Forreston.

“I went back door and couldn’t get the ball,” Fyock said. “Hayden Singley set a screen and Mitchell Heinz set another one. I finally was able to get free.”

Wyatt Rockey, who had been shadowing Fyock, fouled out on Dakota’s opening possession of the fourth OT with a charge to the basket. Evan Flynn, who provided heroics himself at the end of the third OT with a long 3-pointer, took over on Fyock and had him in check during the rest of the fourth overtime.

“On the last possession, it was just a grind out,” Forreston coach Jonathan Schneiderman said. “We didn’t have much left. They didn’t have much left.”

With Forreston able to milk the clock for over 3:30, it was finally time to go and that lone shot of the final period sent Dakota into heartbreak.

“What an unbelievable game,” Dakota coach Mike Bartelt said.

“Both teams balanced each other out and someone had to lose.”

Polo hangs on, beats Aquin for regional title

Talented teams of the past 9 years fell short, but the 2018-19 Marcos finally busted down the door keeping them out of sectionals.

by Aquin at the Class 1A Durand Regional championship game, coming out on top 77-74 in a game that had the pace of an Olympic pingpong match.

“It’s about the relief of being hunted all year,” Polo coach Matt Messer said. “We were picked to be the best team in the conference, and there’s relief in accomplishing what we knew we could do.”

Polo (26-3) will have a chance to tie the school record for wins in a season against River Ridge in the East Dubuque Sectional semifinals on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs entered the bonus with 6:47 left, and made all six of their free throws to start the fourth.

Brennan Carlson and Tyler Broge canned back-to-back 3s to cut Aquin’s deficit to 67-59 midway through the fourth, as the Marcos

struggled with turnovers.

The frenetic pace was set by both teams right away, as the Marcos led 21-14 after one. Brady Webb scored seven of his 17 points for the Marcos in the first 8 minutes.

“It was about taking what the defense gave me,” Webb said. “I know we have guys who can score.

Being a senior, you have to know what’s best to help the team win in games like these.”

After the Bulldogs had cut their deficit to eight early in the third, Braidon Soltow answered with backto-back 3s to make it 52-38 Marcos.

Polo ended the third on a 9-2 run.

Webb scored five straight points on a 3 and two free throws, Justin Young made a layup off a crisp pass inside by Hammond, and Soltow nailed a baseline jumper just before the buzzer.

Aquin shot 43 percent (25-for-58) from the field and 33 percent (11-for33) from 3-point range.

The Marcos shot an efficient 57 percent (29-for-51) from the field, as Young finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Marcos fall to River Ridge at East Dubuque Sectional

Polo had its chances against River Ridge, but it was turnovers that sent the Marcos home without a first-ever sectional win.

River Ridge advanced to Friday’s finals with a 71-60 win over Polo at the 1A East Dubuque Sectional on Tuesday.

“We prepped for their pressure, but couldn’t simulate it,” Polo coach Matt Messer said. “By the time we adjusted, it was a dogfight.”

Anytime the Marcos would get close, a costly giveaway enabled the Wildcats to stay one step ahead. Polo never held the lead once.

The Wildcats forced Polo into eight turnovers in the first quarter and six in the second.

“We got them pushing and taking shots they didn’t want,” River Ridge coach Shean Albrecht said.

It was Justin Young coming to the rescue midway through the second quarter. With River Ridge ahead 24-15 for its largest lead of the first half, the 6-foot-4 center made two quick baskets down low.

With Young scoring at will, Albrecht switched from a 1-3-1 zone to a 2-2-1.

With River Ridge continuing to harass the the guards out front, Young snuck in for another score before the break, but Polo still trailed 30-26.

Besides turnovers, the other major problem for Polo was Young drawing his fourth foul with 13 minutes left in the game. At the time, River Ridge

“They had no answer for JY,” Messer said. “We discussed leaving him in, but didn’t want to lose him for the rest of the game.”

With Young sitting out the rest of the third quarter, the Wildcats scored all of their points in the paint.

A Tucker Mumford 3-pointer gave Polo a spark in the third quarter, and Webb added two more scores on acrobatic baskets to keep the Marcos

close.

“We had a great team effort,” Webb said. “The difference in the game was River Ridge did a better job with the little things. Credit to them.”

Braiden Soltow made a key basket before the close of the third quarter to keep the score within 47-41. Polo pulled to within 49-45 on a pair of baskets by Soltow, but three turnovers in a row saw the Wildcats increase that lead to 55-45, with Ben Crist tacking on his 26th point of the game.

Young gave Polo some life with six straight points, and Soltow had a steal and three more points to pull within 59-54 with just under 2 minutes to play. But that was the closest the Marcos would come the rest of the way.

With a minute left and Polo down 63-56, Soltow had a 3 go in and out of the basket, and the Wildcats went 10-for-10 from the free throw line the remainder of the game.

What was also noteworthy about the miss, was that it would have given Soltow 1,000 points for his career at Polo. Young, who led Polo with 20 points, finished with 1,306, and Webb leaves the program after scoring 1,247.

The final indignation for Polo was seeing River Ridge sink 23 of 27 free throws after coming into the game as a 50-percent shooting team from the charity stripe.

“If they only make half those, maybe we win the game,” Messer said. “It wasn’t for lack of effort that we lost. That burst in the second quarter showed we were in it.”

JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL

The Eagles from David L. Rahn Junior High hosted the DLR girls’ basketball Invite on Feb. 16, at the Blackhawk Center in Oregon.

Eight eighth grade teams participated including: Byron, Dixon Reagan, Forreston, Fulton, Genoa-Kingston, Meridian, Rochelle and DLR. The Eagles’ first round opponent was Forreston. The home team fell behind early but trailed only by two at the break, 14-16. Both teams scored ten points in the third quarter to keep it close.

In the fourth quarter, DLR outscored the Cardinals,14-6, to claim the 38-32 win. Hadley Lutz led all scorers with 20 points; 10 in the final quarter.

Elizabeth Mois and Ava Hackman each chipped in six while Reilee Suter had four and Mariah Drake, two.

The Eagles’ next opponent was Dixon Reagan. Dixon’s relentless press caused turnover after turnover for the Eagles.

DLR was never in the game as they fell to an excellent Dixon team, 49-5.

In the third place game, the Eagles were up against conference foe, Meridian. The Eagles’ shooting was cold in the first half and they trailed, 11-16, after two quarters of play.

Meridian sank a couple of timely three-pointers in the second half to pull out the 24-30 win. Lutz led DLR with 11 points while Mois added six.

Suter chipped in four and Drake had three.

The Eagles finished the tournament in fourth place.

On Feb. 19, the Eagles resumed conference play when they traveled to Pecatonica. The Eagles took a tentative, 15-13, lead into the locker room at the half.

The Indians used their ‘pass and go’ offense to outscore DLR in the third quarter, 4-11. The Eagles fought back in the final quarter, using some aggressive full court pressure, to win the game, 32-29.

Lutz had 14 points to lead DLR. Drake added six while both Suter and Mois had five. Katelyn Bowers added a bucket.

Drake led the team in rebounding, pulling down six boards. Drake and Suter combined for eight steals in

the win.

Two nights later, the Eagles hosted Forreston. Both teams played an aggressive and physical game. DLR held a two-point lead at the break, 16-14.

The Eagles poured in 14 third quarter points to widen the scoring gap. It proved to be enough as the Eagles won, 37-31.

Lutz again led all scorers with 23 points. Olivia James added six.

Drake and Bowers both poured in four points.

Lutz was top rebounder with six boards and James pulled down five.

YOUTH SPORTS Deadline to register for soccer teams is March 12 Registration is currently taking place for ages 4-14 for the Oregon Park District Spring Soccer League.

The deadline to register is March 12 with practice slated to begin the week of April 1. Games will begin on Saturday, April 6-May 11. No late registrations will be accepted.

Soccer games will be held in Oregon at Park West or Byron on Saturdays and practices occur during the week at the coaches discretion.

Regional atmosphere more exciting than finals I COMMENTARY Andy Colbert

The same applies to the football playoffs. The atmosphere at the University of Illinois is nowhere close to what is found at the high schools in the games leading up to the championship.

Yes, it is illogical that a regional would solicit more ardent fandom than state finals, but it’s true. At least in 2019.

Going back 50 years, it was the other way around. Nothing could touch the excitement of the IHSA state finals.

Is this a case of how different society is or a case of how high-school basketball has changed in Illinois?

The subject of a broken state basketball championship has been debated over and over by social media and newspaper columnists without one definitive answer. Plenty of theories, though.

I don’t have an answer either, but do know that being in the Forreston gym Friday night turned me on sub-

stantially more than being at Carver Arena.

Here’s one problem with the state tourney and was glaringly evident at the girls final. What is Danville Schlarman doing in 1A? Because they have an enrollment listed at 106.

But, with all their D-I talent, they made a mockery of the semifinal and championship games. What was the point of even playing them when they are so far advanced than everyone else?

Shocking that a school as small as Schlarman would just happen to have so much talent walking the halls.

Any hope Eastland had of hanging with Schlarman in the championship game was quickly erased after the 20-5 first-quarter deficit.

What was the point of even playing it?

The same thing may apply to the 1A boys event with Providence St. Mel. Whichever NUIC school that advances to the super-sectional to possible play consensus No. 1-ranked St. Mel, faces the prospect of going against a school that regularly beats 3A and 4A opponents.

How is that fair?

At least when the IHSA ran a

1-class tournament, you knew what you had signed on for. With four classes, there was meant to be a degree of equity, which makes for a more interesting tournament.

When one school blows everyone else out, it does the opposite and the tourney loses fan interest.

Was No. 7 seed Winnebago beating No. 2 Byron an upset at the 2A regional final?

Not at all. The youthful Indians are on a roll and continue to get better and better as the season goes on, which is a credit to the job coach Joe Murphy does at ‘Bago in nurturing talent.

The school that Winnebago lost to in the state championship game last year, Chicago Orr, is likely the team to also beat in 2019. Like Providence St. Mel, they play a 3A/4A schedule.

In fact, they beat Bogan, the No. 2-ranked team in 3A a couple weeks ago in the Chicago Public League playoffs.

Orr has quite an exquisite schedule, playing teams from Indiana, Missouri, Michigan and Minnesota.

Here at Oregon, a big road trip was nearly to the Wisconsin state line for the South Beloit MLK tourney.

n an attempt to stem the tide of declining attendance at the boys and girls state basketball championships, the IHSA is considering consolidating both events from two separate weekends into one.

That makes sense. Carver Arena in Peoria, site of the boys finals, is usually only half filled and the girls tourney at Normal draws even less.

I’ve only been to a couple state finals in Peoria and have some shocking news for the IHSA. As a fan, I had more fun watching the Forreston and Dakota boys engage in a regional final at a plain and simple high-school gym.

It wasn’t necessarily because it was a four-overtime thriller either.

The atmosphere I was soaking up at Forreston was likely the same at Galena between East Dubuque and Le-Win, at Durand between Polo and Aquin and for sure at Morrison between River Ridge and Pearl City.

Throw Byron and Winnebago playing at North Boone into that equation, as well, along with tons of other 1A and 2A regional finals all over Illinois.

Carver Arena can’t manufacture that. That state tournament is too sterile in its fancy arena with all the latest doodads and empty seats.

Everyone is entitled to vote for whomever they feel will do the best job for the elected office.

The terminology of the jail being built downtown is misleading and false.

It is being built blocks away from the downtown. The geography is wrong.

I urge every registered voter to keep to your own values and don’t allow yourself to be wrongly persuaded from someone else’s vendettas.

PASTA DINNER Pasta dinner set for March 5 A pasta dinner to support school kits for students at Mary Morgan Elementary School, Byron, will be held on Tuesday, March 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the United Church of Byron, 701 W. Second St., Byron.

The cost is $8 for adults, $5 for children ages 5-12, and children under 5 eat free. Pasta choices include spaghetti, mostaccioli, fettucine with three sauce choices.

A grant from Thrivent Financial will cover all food costs, which means 100 percent of proceeds will go toward the purchase of school kits for children who receive free or reduced-priced lunches at Mary Morgan Elementary School.

Since two of them were city council members the opposition was long and very costly to the project.

There was mention made of the residences “removed from the tax rolls.”

As long as there are other residences, or buildable lots, on the local market this is just a relocation of community assets.

It is important for a city to maintain a business/institutional core surrounded by its residential neighborhoods.

Not addressed was the additional annual operating cost of $1.2 million to transport detainees for a remote/rural location. Not a price to be ignored. That cost is saved by the final design.

Also, deputy safety needs to be a concern. Enclosed passageways from cell to courtroom are the only safe way to handle high-profile detainees.

In this day of vicious drug gangs and military grade weapons available on the street of any large city – deputies transporting members of this genre place their lives at risk.

When it comes time to exercise your right to vote – gauge your candidates on their overall performance.

Certainly, don’t condemn them for their strength to make a wise, well-researched vote that will move Oregon forward – not leave it mired in the past.

Dear Editor, Last week’s letter to the editor regarding new Ogle County Judicial Center Annex (jail) by Jim Barnes in the Ogle County Newspapers really requires a response.

First, Jim and I have taken positions on many projects – sometimes in mutual support - sometimes diametrically opposed.

Importantly, after the final outcome we have always remained friends.

In all of these cases there is never a question that Jim’s position is heartfelt and sincere, but regarding his recent letter the facts take us in a totally different direction.

Following the points in the letter in order: • Two business leaders voiced opposition. The vocal opposition was relatively

short-lived. Almost certainly subdued when the prohibitively high cost of their preferred alternatives became apparent.

• Three hundred-thirty-six citizens signed a petition voicing opposition. We all know if you lay a petition on a countertop in a high traffic area it will garner a large number of signatures – some from the referenced area – some from parts unknown.

Also, it was widely noted that many of those signatures were obtained by persuasion. In any event, counting them all as Oregon’s population of 3,700 divided by 336 equals 9 percent.

That really shouldn’t guide the city in a process that also affects 52,000 citizens of the county.

On-the-Road Seminar for farmers is March 18 Trucking regulations can be complicated, and farm exemptions compound that problem. Seems everyone has a different answer to each question.

An On-the-Road Seminar will be held on Monday, March 18 at 9 a.m. at Ogle County Farm Bureau Building, Oregon, to find out what local farmers need to know.

The two-hour seminar, hosted by the Ogle County Farm Bureau,

focuses on trucking laws—old and new—specifically for farmers.

Presenters will introduce participants to new rules, remind them of the old ones that still apply and help to figure out whether exemptions are available.

Throughout it all, those attending will have the chance to ask those farm trucking questions that everyone seems to have an opinion about, but no one can agree on an answer.

Trucking laws have been reshaped in recent years with more changes yet to come.

Rules recently affected include farmer exemptions, Harvest Season permit, Electronic Logging Devices, waivers for insulin-related diabetic drivers, a new class “C” license plate, Covered Farm Vehicle options for small trucks, and the UCR payment schedule and fees for 2019.

Bernice M. Kruse, 87, died on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019 surrounded by her loving family at the Serenity Hospice and Home.

She was born on May 16, 1931 in Thomson, the daughter of Charles W. and Kathryn E. (Eisenhower) Hartman.

She graduated from Lanark High School in 1949.

Bernice married Frederick E. Kruse on Nov. 15, 1953 in Lanark.

She was a member of the Congregational Christian Church, of Stillman Valley, where she served as Sunday School treasurer for more than 50 years, served as a deaconess, and was on various

gathering eggs daily.

She was known to many for her meticulous manicured lawn.

She is survived by her two children, Deb (Bruce) Bonne, of Stillman Valley, and John (Jennifer) Kruse, of Byron; two grandchildren, Brooke (Jamie) Adams, of Stillman Valley, and Brent (Arlett) Bonne, of Davis Junction; three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Nolan Adams, and Camila Bonne; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband,

Fred; twin brother, Bernard Hartman; and brother, Charles H. Hartman.

The family would like to especially thank the Serenity Hospice and Home Staff and Rev. Chris Brauns for their loving care and support.

Funeral service was held on Feb. 25 at the Congregational Christian Church in Stillman Valley with the Rev. Chris Brauns, pastor of the church, officiating.

Burial was at the Stillman Valley Cemetery.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE Illinois State Police District 1 Commander Captain Matthew Hodgdon has announced enforcement figures and activity for January.

Troopers in District 1, which includes Ogle, Carroll, Lee, and Whiteside Counties, issued 268 citations, 341 written warnings, and made five criminal arrests.

Speeding accounted for 187 citations, nine citations were issued for occupant restraint violations and seven citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 45 traffic crashes, assisted 375 motorists, and conduct-

ed 95 commercial vehicle inspections, 15 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons.

District 1 had two traffic crash fatalities in January.

District 1 officials also reported the following arrests.
