County board discusses downsizing More districts, fewer representatives

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Ogle County Board Member Bruce McKinney (Rochelle) made a presentation at Tuesday night’s meeting to reduce the number of members on the board.

The 24-member county board reorganizes every 10 years. There are currently eight districts with three board members per district. McKinney’s proposal would have 16 districts with one board member per district, thereby reducing the number of board members to 16.

“I feel that my district is kind of top heavy with three members,” McKinney said of district four. “This would help eliminate the possibility of two county board members being from the same area. District two is a long district. This would make sure we had one member from the north side and south side of it.

I think it’d be a better representation of Ogle County.”

McKinney said other counties in the region including Jo Daviess, Carroll, DeKalb, Winnebago and Stephenson have no more than two representatives per district. Only one (DeKalb) as has many board members as Ogle County.

Carroll County only has nine members.

Among the concerns raised were how board members’ time to serve on committees would be reallocated if the change took place. The Ogle County Board is a committee-driven form of county government.

“I think we need to form a committee to take a look at it all,” Board Member Thomas K. Smith, district two (Rochelle) said. “Not only at downsizing the board,

McKinney responded that some board members would have to take on the responsibility of serving on an extra committee or that some committees could be combined.

“Currently, I’m on one committee, the judicial committee,” McKinney said.

“We meet for about 10-15 minutes and we’re done. We could pick up another responsibility. I don’t think that would really be a problem.”

Dan Janes of district five and Stillman Valley raised concerns about population and geography. Redistricting, according to state statute, is done on population. Janes said the potential plan would require the populations to be plus or minus three percent in each district.

“You’d have to be careful with breaking up the geographical because it might not interface with the population,”

Janes said. “And there is where you’d get in trouble with the state of Illinois.”

Janes also added that the proposal would create new voting districts and create ‘a lot more’ work for the county clerk. He and Smith both suggested waiting for the census to come back, which will be taking place soon. Byron’s dense population center as well as the east side of Rochelle were concerns.

“I’m about 18 miles away from our other district board members,” Janes said. “Some of us are broken up already.”

In the past, some board members have lived in the same block or even in the same house. McKinney said another course of action would be keep the same districts and reduce the number of representatives.

“That’s another way, just stay with the eight districts and go two per district,” McKinney said. “But my feeling is you have better representation in the districts if you spread your board members out over the districts.”

Wileman plans to continue the volunteer searches when weather makes it possible. Recent winter weather over the weekend has resulted in ice forming on the river, stopping boat traffic.

Some members of the volunteer search had sonar equipment with their boats, but Wileman said there were not many and it was hard to get a clear image.

“I wanted to know he wasn’t visible and sitting there,” Wileman said.

“I wanted to let the family know that we did what we could.”

Benefit is March 7 in Polo A benefit dart tournament for the families of Dearborn and Swift will be held on Saturday, March 7 at the Polo Room at 712 N. Division Ave. in Polo. The buy-in to the tournament is $15.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction with the proceeds going to the families. Donations will be accepted as well.

The arrival of real winter weather late last week did not stop friends and family of Kent Dearborn Jr. from offering their help to try and find the body of the missing boater.

Polo resident Matt Wileman organized a volunteer search for Dearborn, 33, of Polo, who was one of two fishermen still missing after their boat capsized just below the Oregon dam on Nov, 20.

The body of Dearborn’s fishing friend, James Swift, 64, of Forreston was found on Jan. 3 near the Dixon dam.

“I’d always see the fish he’d catch on Facebook,” Wileman said of Dearborn Jr., “I just felt like the search effort wasn’t enough. There’s no closure for the family. I lost a family member recently, so I understand how it feels. I spend a lot of time on the river.”

The group met on a bitter-cold morning on Jan. 16 with temperatures barely in double digits. Ice was beginning to form on some parts of the river and on a propeller of one of the boats.

Starting the engines on the boats was made difficult by the cold.

The previous search spanned from Oregon to Sterling. As many seven boats were out on the river at one time. At least two people were in each boat. Those without boats walked the shorelines that were safe.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle, who headed up the search for the men since they went missing, applauded the efforts by Wileman and the volunteers. The Sheriff’s Office will be trying to do one flyover per week.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is aware that searching will be done in areas near Dixon and will handle the official duties if a recovery is made in their jurisdiction. Lee County will not be conducting any searches.

Swift’s body was found near the Dixon dam when a power plant worker noticed and called authorities. Dixon is 16 miles from Oregon, where the two men first went into the water.

Special meeting about Coliseum set for Feb. 5 Museum would be in the public building during 49-year lease

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com After nearly a year in the works, a plan to lease the Oregon Coliseum to a local foundation who plans to turn it into a museum could finally be voted on in the next month by the city council.

Officials from the Coliseum Museum of Arts, Antiquities and Americana will be in attendance to give a presentation and answer questions on Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the Coliseum for a special meeting that is being hosted by the Oregon City Council.

“The council has voted to say they’re willing to take a look at it,” Oregon Mayor Ken Williams said.

“The council made a stipulation that since it’s a public building and used by the community for a variety of events, we wanted to have a public forum. We won’t vote at that, it’s merely an informational session.

There will be public comment.”

Williams anticipates that a vote on the lease will take place at the regularly-scheduled council meeting on Feb. 11. The 49-year lease is for the first and second floors of the Coliseum for $1 per year.

The Coliseum is currently used for various public events and needs.

Nonprofit organization Autumn On Parade currently uses the second floor of the Coliseum rent-free for office space and meetings. Williams said the city fully supports AOP and would assist them in finding a new space.

The city recently finished a study on who has rented the Coliseum for the past three years and for what purpose.

“We found that 95 percent of the time, it’s empty,” Williams said. “Of the remaining five percent, a number of those functions can be held in the Coliseum in the lower level, which will be kept by the city.”

The city would effectively become landlords to CMAAA and the museum and responsible for upkeep of the building, which it levies a tax for operational and maintenance expenses. The building is “in really good shape” according to Williams and isn’t in need of costly repairs in the near future.

Williams said a 49-year renewable lease length is needed because museums require long-term security in

“People in the arts won’t support it if it won’t be there a while,” Williams said.

If the lease is approved by the council, a director of the museum would be hired. A director would be paid 75 percent by CMAAA and 25 percent by the city. The city’s share would come out of its economic development fund.

The director would work for the city 25 percent of the time and help with the development downtown and bringing in shows, festivals and other tourism, Williams said.

The CMAAA includes representatives from nine governmental, notfor-profit organizations, and community leaders from Oregon. The nine organizations involved are the Lawrence Foundation, Oregon School District, Oregon Park District, Oregon Public Library, Serenity Hospice & Home, Chana School, Oregon Depot, Village of Progress, and Ogle County Historical Society.

Oregon School Superintendent Tom Mahoney, is president of the CMAAA. “My organization sees that build-

ing as underutilized,” Mahoney said.

“We want more traffic down there.

Our vision is to have displays with local art. There’s Lorado Taft work, dioramas that he made. We would have an event that’s an exhibit of Americana like toys, tractors or trains.”

Williams believes the museum would eventually bring people to the downtown, benefiting the city.

He said Oregon is an art community with many sculptures and the CMAAA would improve that even more.

Part of the CMAAA plan is to put an audio and video recording studio on the second floor of the Coliseum.

The studio would be used by area schools as well as rented out by local businesses for commercials.

Delays in paperwork and designs have been the cause of the lease process taking nearly a year, Williams said. Designs are in place to build dividers for exhibits inside the building, an ADA-compliant ramp on the left-front corner outside and possibly putting windows back in on the side of the building.

“The process has been great,” Mahoney said. “Any time you’re talking about changing a public building, it should take a while.”

Concerns were raised at meetings last year about the public losing control of the building by entering into the lease. Building rental fees, which amounted to $13,000 in 2018, would also be lost.

“The hope is to answer any questions,” Mahoney said of the Feb. 5 meeting. “This change will be hard for some people. They remember the coliseum as a different building.

There hasn’t been a lot of use recently. We want to have those conversations.”

Auman painting now at Chana School Museum The Chana School Museum in Oregon recently was gifted with a painting of the Chana School by artist, Linda Auman, of Freeport.

The painting joins the collection of works by such artists as Fred Bushnell, Harry Nurmet, Carol Ubben, and others.

“Mrs. Auman, having grown up in rural Forreston, Illinois, was influenced by an education received in a rural one room school like her parents,” said Connie Stauffer of the

Chana School Museum. “Her father, Ed Hock, went to Prairie Green School, noted for being the last one room school to close in Ogle County in 1964. Her mother, Viola Drake Hoch, went to the Maple Hill School as a child and later taught there.”

Like her parents, Auman has fond memories of her school days as a youngster attending the Cyclone Heights School that was located outside of Forreston.

The original school was lost to a cyclone.

The rebuilt schoolhouse was named Cyclone Heights.

Auman graduated from Forreston High School and then Northern Illinois University.

She taught art for preschool through junior college.

She taught 22 years at the high school level.

“Mrs. Auman has written and illustrated her own books and illustrated books for other authors,” said Stauffer. “Linda is a multimedia artist currently working out of her home in Freeport. She has broad art experiences and interests such as painting, textiles, sculpture, mixed media works, and much more. She is a practicing artist who welcomes anyone into her home for a visit, lessons, and/or consultations.

“The Chana School Foundation thanks Linda for her beautiful painting and appreciates her historical accounts of rural education from the Forreston area,” Stauffer said.

Stauffer said the Chana School Museum would like to preserve the legacy of our one room schools by displaying a county map showing the location of each school with its picture.

Mom dispensed dose of castor oil every two weeks Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon, has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK This is the fourth installment of a diary written by Robert Ordnung Hardesty who was born in Oregon and attended schools in Oregon including the Oregon Bible College.

Robert’s parents, William and Ida, lived at 100 S. 10th St. in Oregon on a 10-acre truck farm. After graduation from Oregon Bible College in June 1944, Robert accepted an invitation to become pastor of the Church of God in Omaha, Nebraska.

1. In the Cyrus Jones family there were eight children and each one was proficient on several instruments.

2. The Jones family had a cottage on an island in Rock River about a mile south of town.

3. An Oregon woman was eager to offer singing talent at any and every occasion. Her singing style was above the note and below the note but never on the note.

4. One did not go to the doctor for every sniffle or ache.

Home remedies were used first.

5. My mother thought one needed a good cleanout every two weeks.

6. So every other Saturday Harold and I had to take a dose of Castor Oil. 7. Our family drank sassafras tea in the month of March to thin the blood. Supposedly the cold winter had caused one’s blood to thicken.

8. Saturday night was bath night at our house. We took baths in a huge pan in the kitchen. Water was heated on the kitchen stove.

9. We always had plenty of milk and cream, so we made ice cream with a hand cranked freezer. We knew the ice cream was fully frozen when we could not continue to turn the crank.

10. Dad purchased a portable cider mill, with which we could crush apples and squeeze the juice out of them. The leftover dry pulp was fed to the cows and they were glad to get it.

H. E. Wade made some temporary caps to go over the stubs. Sometimes when I was walking downtown he’s see me on the street and ask me to open my mouth so he could see how those crowns looked.

12. Dr. Grant Kloster, our family physician, recommended remedies that one had at home like salt water for a gargle.

13. The Owls, a young bachelors club, every summer had a picnic on Margaret Fuller Island.

When returning from the island the most likely Owl to get married rode in a large baby buggy pushed by another member of the club.

14. Before my dad died our family always had reliable transportation, a surrey with a fringe on the top and Dick, the gentle horse that pulled it.

15. In winter my dad sometimes hitched Dick to what he called the cutter, a small sleigh that held two people. You might call it a sport car on runners.

16. In my early childhood radio was in its infancy and television was only a dream.

17. When I was 7 years old dad obtained a Victrola (early type of record player) and a stack of records.

We had many enjoyable hours of entertainment.

18. On the farm our cats and dogs were never allowed in the house.

They slept in the barn.

19. In addition to our work on the

farm, Harold and I delivered the Rockford Gazette (evening) and the Rockford Morning Star. Our customers paid 15 cents each week.

20. In 1922I won the Rockford Newspaper sponsored a contest for an all-expense paid trip to the Worlds’ Fair in Chicago, including two nights stay at the Palmer House.

21. After graduation from High School in 1936 I went to work at Kol-Master Corp., a manufacturer of coal stokers. My beginning wage was 30 cents per hour. I was elated.

22. One summer I was attendant at a gas station in East Oregon.

Each day my first job was to fill the glass oil bottles so they would

be ready when a customer needed a quart of oil (This was before oil was available in quart cans.)

23. Armistice Day (now called Veterans Day) was observed every year.

The teachers and children all stood in silence, facing east for one minute at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 to honor those soldiers who gave their lives for their country in WWI. This followed the sounding of the Carnation Milk Company’s whistle for one minute.

24. Industries in Oregon used whistles to alert their employees to starting time for work, lunch breaks and the end of their work shifts because few people carried watches.

Fifth annual Mini-Golf Tournament Fundraiser

By Karen Merlak The winter season took a little while to get started, but the cold winds, snow, and ice are here. For each season, there is unspeakable beauty. In winter, the snow covered ground lit by the pastel colored sunrise are just another work of art by our wonderful Creator.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Ellen and Justin Rahn.

For special music, Larry Riffle played harmonica, Chuck Kearns played guitar and sang, and Bev Kearns played piano for the hymn, “Just a Closer Walk with Thee.”

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young group of friends, Katelyn, Laura, and Harper. Since our church was canceled last week due to no electricity, we continued with the previously planned service.

After church, everyone gathered for a potluck meal followed by the annual business meeting. There was much to discuss with the progress on the new church building. We will be moving before we know it.

This past Friday evening was supposed to be a fun night out for Charlotte and me. Our plans to travel to Rockford were canceled due to the weather. We both traded in our night of fun for viewing the snow from the

Walking across the icy parking lot has been a challenge over the past week. Just before I crossed an icy patch in the church parking lot, Dave Burright hurried to catch up to me to offer an arm of assistance.

On my way out of church, Brian Toms let me use his arm to get across the larger patch of ice. It is good to know that, when we need it, we have good friends to help us through the tough spots in life.

Our relationship with God is very special. Reaching out to one another is an extension of the relationship we continually build with God. The way we get closer to God is by getting close to each other.

Belonging to a church family is far more than attending church services. Reaching out to each other and receiving love is a wonderful way to show God’s love. We can feel His love even in the small ways that we help each other.

My hope is that our churches will be filled with those who want to know God. Today is a great day to join our church family. Please come and be a part of our family in our little church in the country.

The 7 p.m. event will be held in the Sanctuary of First Lutheran Church, 225 S. 3rd St. Candlemas and celebrates the Scottish celebration of the half-way point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.

Candlemas Eve is a family-friendly free concert featuring strings, piano, bagpipes, pipe organ and singing.

The event will feature performances by Music Academy students and will conclude with a solo bagpiper accompanied by members of the City of Rockford Pipe Band.

Music will include Loch Lamond, Prayer for Peace, Pachelbel’s Kannon, Amazing Grace and Lord Lovat’s Lament. .

The Music Academy is spending the year studying Scottish music in preparation for a trip to Scotland in July where students will participate in the prestigious Stirling Bridge International Arts Festival, a five-day celebration of music and culture.

Free will donations will be accepted at Candlemas Eve which will be used to help students finance their Scotland trip. Financial Support for Candlemas Eve has been provided by grants from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois and the Smith Charitable Trust.

Acoustic Circus to play at Fifth Friday on Jan. 31

The historic H.I. Lincoln Building in downtown Franklin Grove will reopen for one day, Jan. 31, for of the traditional Fifth Friday Music Programs.

FNBiA will present The Acoustic Circus which includes Kathy Cechetti on vocals and rhythm guitar, Steve Catron on vocals and mandolin, Andre Quintones on vocals and lead guitar, and Mark Stoch on bass.

RRC is offering trip to see Leno The Rock River Center in Oregon is offering a chance for area residents to see Jay Leno in a hilarious night of stand-up comedy at the historic Paramount Theatre in Aurora.

Additionally, many of the high frequency words do not follow regular phonics rules, which makes them difficult to sound out.

Think of words like said, have, or the. Teachers in the early grades send lists of these words home, perhaps six to eight words a week, for children to learn.

Making flashcards for these words is one way to practice them. If you make two identical sets you can play a memory game. You can also write sentences using the words, children’s names, color words, and pictures as needed.

Sight words are best learned in the context of real reading and writing.

From the beginning we want to be sure our children and grandchildren know that the whole purpose of reading is to understand what is read.

Reading comprehension is one of the main reading difficulties that students encounter.

We can support comprehension by talking about what we are reading to or with our children and grandchildren. Before reading we can read

This month’s column offers a broad overview of various reading difficulties and possible ways to support struggling readers in each area.

English is an alphabetic language, so learning to read begins with learning the names of the letters of the alphabet.

It is also necessary to learn the sounds that each letter represents. For young readers who find this difficult it can be helpful to add music to the learning, play games that focus on letters and sounds, or to add tactile experiences by making letters in shaving cream on a table or with Play Doh. There are many apps and online games for early readers that involve learning the names and sounds of the letters. A good place to begin is with the letters in the child’s name.

Beginning readers also need to learn whole words by sight. These words are sometimes called high frequency words, sometimes sight words.

They are generally short words, but they are found in a high percentage of all print so learning to read them automatically without slowing down to sound them out makes reading easier.

and discuss the title, any pictures, and even information on the back of a book, making predictions of what we think the book will be about.

We should stop during reading and after reading as well to discuss what we learned or what happened.

Asking questions like why, who, what, when, where, or how can guide those discussions.

A related problem is reading fluency. This includes an appropriate rate, accuracy, and reading with expression.

If readers must slow down and sound out many words, the reading breaks down and understanding what is read is difficult.

Repeated rereadings of easy, familiar texts builds fluency and confidence. An older child can read to younger siblings and both benefit. Â You might also try echo reading which is when an adult reads a line or small amount of text and the child repeats it.

The adult models reading with expression and at an appropriate rate. Poetry works well for echo reading. It is good to have fun while practicing!

Reading is a complex process. That process can break down in many areas and cause reading difficulties.

This is a simplistic explanation of some of the ways the process may break down. We always want to support our readers and encourage their efforts.

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com For Oregon girls basketball coach Wendy Lambrigtsen, choosing the best way to defend Dixon was akin to picking your poison – no option was too palatable.

The Hawks did a good job of slowing down the Duchesses for a while, but Dixon was able to piece together a tide-turning stretch in the second half and pull away for a 61-43 win at Lancaster Gym on a snowy Friday night on Jan. 17.

It wasn’t just a balanced Dixon attack that posed problems for the Hawks, but how the Duchesses were scoring.

Senior forward Madelyn Chesley provided a consistent low-post threat, while guards Sam Tourtillott, Caylyn Kimmel and Elle Jarrett also ventured inside with some success.

“We were used to them being on the perimeter, and they pulled their game inside with their littles because we were so focused on shutting down their bigs,” Lambrigtsen said. “We were expecting the unexpected the whole game, but we just missed them a couple of times in there.”

Dixon (16-3, 4-1 Big Northern) led just 28-25 at halftime, then put together several little bursts that allowed them to finally shake the Hawks (12-11, 0-5).

The Duchesses began the third quarter with an 11-2 run, capped by a layup from Tourtillott, to go up 38-27 with 4 minutes, 45 seconds left in the third quarter.

Oregon clawed back to within

seven points (38-31) after a bucket from Breanna DeHaan, only to have Dixon respond with a quick 7-0 run, capped by a jumper from Tourtillott, with 1:50 left in the third quarter.

Again, the Hawks had an answer,

as Lauren Montavon dropped in five quick points to get her team within nine (45-36) entering the final quarter.

The Duchesses, however, pulled away for good in the fourth. Jarrett opened the quarter with a pair of short jumpers, then Kimmel hit two free throws to make it 51-36 with 5:53 to go. Oregon didn’t get closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Dixon coach Luke Ravlin noted dealing with a feisty group of Hawks was anything but easy, especially in the first half.

“Kudos to Oregon, they’re a good club and their coaching staff is doing a great job,” Ravlin said.

“They get better every time I see them. A lot of that was them. They came out and played really good.

In the second half, we were able to lock down a little bit on defense and made it harder, made some shots, and played together.”

Abby Guthrie led Dixon with 17 points, including 4-for-7 marksmanship from long distance, but the ringleader for the Duchesses was Kimmel. She scored 15 points, including a 6-for-6 performance from the freethrow line, and dished a game-high seven assists.

For Oregon, Olivia Lambrigtsen led the way with 14 points, four assists and three steals. Jenae Bothe had nine points and 13 rebounds, while Montavon added nine points.

Hawk grapplers hold last home stand of season

BY RANDY HOLLAND The Hawk wrestlers started a brief homestand in the Oregon High School gym on Jan. 14 with a quad meet against Mendota, Sherrard, and Sterling Newman.

The Trojans had just four wrestlers and Oregon pinned them all in a 78-0 win.

The second meet was a great effort by the young Oregon team as they took 17th ranked Sherrard to the last match in a 40-36 loss.

Newman also had number problems with only five contested matches. The Hawks pinned to win two on the mat and rode forfeits to a 66-14

win.

The Sherrard meet started at 160 with Jokiah Sewell pinning with a cradle at 1:11. Wayde Reimer took a high crotch to the back in 51 seconds.

Adam Glendenning lost a wizzer and went to his back in 43 seconds and Daniel Dominguez was pinned in a half spladle at 1:36.

Against eighth ranked Josh Bynum at 220, Jonathon Alaniz was pinned in a granby at 1:51.

Flaharty had a half nelson for three points in the first on his way to a 10-3 win in the heavyweight match.

At 106, Halvorson went out front

with a half nelson at 1:58. Edwin Estrada won by forfeit at 113.

Against honorable mention Nate Bynum, Flores-Minnis was taken down and stacked at 4:31. At 126, Seth Stevens had a three point half nelson on the way to a 6-0 win.

Emmett Peterson was pulled back in a chicken wing at 2:35 to knot the team score at 30.

Brayden Altherr lost two sets of backpoints in an 8-0 major decision loss. Gabe Eckerd found a hip toss and pinned with a half nelson at 3:22 in the 145 pound match to put Oregon up 36-34 with one to go.

Sebastian Cardenas took the mat, but he was unable to get the win. He

trailed 10-0 when he was turned over the front in a chicken wing at 3:18 to leave the Hawks short.

There wasn’t much to the Mendota meet. Cardenas with a half nelson at 4:55 and Sewell with a butcher at 1:57 got it going.

Then it was forfeits. Reimer, Brandon Hyde-Jones, Dominguez, Josh Batt, Evan Flaharty, Halvorson, Grant Stender, Sam Flores-Minnis, and Peterson got the sixes.

Altherr, with a takedown in a butcher in fifteen seconds and Eckerd, with a half nelson over the front at 3:50 finished it off.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Jan. 16: Boys Bowling Oregon 3,322, Dixon 3,043: The Hawks swept all three games against the Dukes at Town & Country Lanes in Mount Morris.

Kyle Strite rolled a match-high 622 series for Oregon, with a 226 closing game. Isaac Kaltenbrun added a 603 series with a 227 opening game, and Jacob Smith’s 579 included a 219 second game. Eddie Buttens (524), Charlie Bachman (518) and Brandon Rowe (476) rounded out the Hawks’ lineup.

Dixon was led by Brennan Erb’s 620 series, which included a second game of 239. Tyler Yocum had a 550, Austin Portner added a 525, and Michael Willhite

chipped in a 521. Cody Gray (474) and Kaleb Crawford (353) also competed for the Dukes.

Jan. 18: Boys Bowling Oregon advances to Sectional: Freeport (5,923), Oregon (5,793), Dixon (5,638) and Sterling (5,322) were the top four teams at the Oregon Boys Bowling Regional held at Plum Hollow Lanes on Saturday, and all four will advance to this week’s Sycamore Sectional.

The top finishers for the Hawks were Eddie Buttens (1,216 six-game series), Isaac Kaltenbrun (1,216), Jacob Smith (1,175), Kyle Strite (1,131) and Brandon Rowe (1,055).

Jan. 20: Girls Bowling Oregon girls win MLK in Sterling: The Oregon girls bowling team won the Sterling MLK Invitational on Monday at Blackhawk Lanes with a total pinfall of 5,410, beating out second-place Dixon’s total of 5,211. Sterling took sixth with a pinfall of 4,762 and Erie-Prophetstown was eighth with 3,736.

Galesburg’s Casey Folger had a sixgame score of 1,219 to win the individual crown, with Oregon’s Rebbeca Meyers second (1,148), Sterling’s Zoey Paone third (1,143) and Dixon’s Riley Kavanaugh fourth (1,142).

The Hawks also had a 1,118 from Sam-

mantha Meyers, a 1,063 from Hannah Kaltenbrun, a 1,059 from Alysa Conley and a 1,022 from Ava Wight.

Jan. 21: Girls Basketball Rock Falls 60, Oregon 34: The Rockets led 18-6 after the first quarter, and pushed the lead to 33-14 by halftime in a Big Northern win at the Blackhawk Center.

Ainsleigh Hendrix and Elise Moeller scored 13 points apiece to lead Rock Falls (18-6, 3-2). Olivia Lambrigtsen paced Oregon (12-12, 0-6) with 14 points, and Ella Martin added nine.

The last match against Newman was a marquee matchup between top ranked Kyle Tunink and Sewell, ranked fourth.

But Tunink was at the top of his game and Sewell was still a little rusty after a month layoff due to illness and it was not pretty. Sewell lost by a 19-3 technical fall at 5:43.

In JV action, Batt pinned with a half nelson at 1:38, George ran a wing at 2:52 and Isaac Brooks pinned with a cradle at 1:33. Jared Glendenning lost a 4-0 decision.

Senior Night The homestand continued at the Blackhawk Center on Jan. 16 with senior night and three Big Northern Conference foes.

Senior wrestlers Brandon HydeJones and Sam Flores-Minnis, and statistician Britta Schneider were honored for their service and dedication before the meet.

The Hawks prevailed 46-33 over a pesky Genoa-Kingston team when the wrestling started, then rolled over North Boone 60-22 before an anticipated rematch against Stillman Valley.

That dual did not go as well as Oregon hoped as Stillman strung together a series of pins to win 48-30.

The Genoa meet started with Adam Glendenning reversed into a headlock at 2:42. Alaniz got the points back with hip toss into a headlock at 1:54, but Vasquez got

At 106 Halvorson worked a half nelson at 1:27 to get six for the Hawks. Edwin Estrada fell short 9-4, but a cradle by Flores-Minnis at 1:07 and a forfeit to Peterson put Oregon on top temporarily.

Stevens worked a chicken wing into a reverse half at 5:13 to extend the lead. But Altherr lost a takedown in a chicken wing at 2:23 and Eckerd went over in a wing at 1:33 to give Genoa the lead again.

Cardenas put Oregon back on top to stay when he added two sets of backpoints late to take a 19-5 technical fall at the final buzzer. Sewell reversed into a headlock at 2:42 and Reimer hooked up a chicken wing at 1:22 to finish the off the Cogs.

The Hawks started in a hole against North Boone. Alaniz was

taken to his back in a body lock in 30 seconds and Vasquez was on his back three times in the third period in a 15-3 major decision loss.

Flaharty got Oregon on the board with a wing over the front in 56 seconds and the Hawks took the lead with a chicken wing by Halvorson at the one minute mark.

Forfeits to Stender and Flores-Minnis extended the lead. N-B added six points when Peterson lost a counter to his back at 3:40.

Altherr went out front with a high half nelson at 1:57 to get the points back. The Vikings got their final points when Eckerd was pinned in a half nelson at 0:49.

Cardenas flipped his opponent to his back at 1:23. Sewell had a three point half nelson before he tilted at 1:19 and at 170, Reimer hit a double leg takedown to the back at 1:04 to finish the meet.

Sewell hit a throw to the back at 2:54 to keep the Hawk hopes alive, down 36-30, but that would be the last Oregon points. Reimer was driven to his back at 3:32 and Adam Glendenning went over in an arm bar at 3:24 in the last match.

Wyatt Queckboerner won at 170 pounds. Cole Faivre was the 195-pound champion Oregon had one champion, Adam Glendenning at 182 pounds who had three pins along the way including one over Morrison’s Brenden Stearns in the final.

Jan. 20: Boys Basketball Galena 47, Polo 41: The Marcos could not pull out a tight game at the Pecatonica MLK Tournament.

Galena broke a 14-14 tie after the first quarter to lead 25-23 at halftime and 39-32 after three.

Parker Wolber and Tucker Mumford each scored 10 for the Marcos. Logan Kindle added eight.

Girls Basketball Spring Valley Hall 59, Forreston 52: Despite a 17-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, Forreston fell to Spring Valley Hall in Byron. Alexus Houston (17 points) paced the Cardinals in scoring. Hannah Hart (25 points) and Jaclyn Cinotte (23 points) had big scoring efforts for the Red Devils.

Hometown basketball game brings back memories Walking from his car in the brisk winter air, the old man shuffled up the high-school gym steps. It was a time-honored tradition - going to basketball games - something he had been doing since he was a youngster.

He pondered that briefly, as the smell of popcorn wafted through the gym lobby. It was the same scent he remembered as a kid and one that gave him a sense of comfort. Someone ought to bottle that aroma and sell it, he thought.

Just then, a familiar face greeted him.

“Hi Pete,” said his friend Bob. “I see you didn’t have anything better to do tonight.”

Pete knew his friend was joking, as the two men went to every home game for what seemed like forever.

Over 60 years ago, when Pete was a high-school freshman, a teacher told the class to cherish their time in school, warning them how fast it would go.

It was a blur now, sending him not so much into the future, but reminiscing of days gone by. An evening spent at a basketball game conjured up plenty of those memories, some good and some downright painful.

There was the time his own son played and the team was one win away from advancing to the state finals. The town was consumed with school spirit and Pete could not have been prouder at the send-off pep rally.

But those dreams of a state appearance died in defeat, with Pete physically and emotionally crushed.

Many years later, the school made it to the state tournament, but it wasn’t the same for him.

Everything is different when it is your own children playing.

Pete would never admit it, but there was a bit of jealousy over those basketball parents whose kids did make that trip downstate.

With well-worn cushion in hand, he took a seat in the bleachers.

Scanning the court, he was glad to see a neighborhood boy was starting. He was a good kid, who even came over and shoveled Pete’s driveway out a couple times without asking for money.

None of Pete’s grandchildren played basketball, so it was nice to have a connection to the team.

The older he got, the more removed he was from the goings-on at the school. Sure, there was a booster brick at the football field with him and

his wife’s name on it and he still was on firstname basis with a couple school employees.

There was a genuine democracy in that everyone was welcome in the gymnasium, even old men like himself.

He didn’t even mind the wooden bleachers for what he considered the greatest entertainment value in the world.

For $4, where else could a person smell the popcorn popping and experience the exuberance of youth in a pep band solo, a cheer move deftly performed and a bounce pass to the open scorer.

The game became one-sided and the hometown boys were headed for another loss. Word at the coffee shop was that the coach’s job was in jeopardy.

Pete scanned the crowd and saw the man’s wife and two young children. He felt bad for them and hoped fans would not say anything cruel. Due to its close quarters, gyms can be unforgiving in the what is shouted about.

The worst Pete saw was when a pair of dads got into fisticuffs. Over what, he couldn’t remember.

The best bleacher moment came when his son was given a standing ovation on Senior Night.

As the final seconds ticked down, Pete buttoned up his overcoat and slowly walked to the exit, double-checking his pocket schedule for the next home game.

ACCIDENT

A Rockford woman was killed Jan. 20 in a single-vehicle accident on Illinois 72 near Davis Junction.

Courtney Paulson, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene following the 9:07 a.m. accident.

Police said Paulson was driving a 2019 Dodge Ram eastbound on Illinois 72 when the vehicle went off the south side of the roadway, slid down into the ditch, traveled over 600 feet, overturned, and struck several trees in a wooded area south of the roadway.

The Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The accident remains under investigation.

Jan. 14 Tracey Gobin, 56, of Leaf River was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear. Gobin was scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 14.

Jan. 15 Nathan Stinnett, 36, of Roscoe was arrested at 10:05 a.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at Illinois 64 and Moore Road. Stinnett was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Lauren Lapointe, 45, of Freeport was arrested at 9:10 p.m. for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois 26 and Montague Road. Lapointe was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Richard D. Cook, 36, of Lumberton, Texas was arrested at 8:43 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 100 for a registration violation. Cook was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Jan. 16 Juan A. Perez, 45, of Rockford was arrested at 10:45 a.m. for driving on a suspended license and issued a citation for a window tint violation after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 103. Perez was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

Alexis Cantrell, 20, of Chana was arrested at 3:49 p.m. for driving while license suspended and issued a

citation for operating an uninsured vehicle after a traffic stop in the 500 block of North River Road. Cantrell was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Alexander L. Garcia, 31, of Butte, Montana was arrested at 5:40 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Interstate 88 at mile marker 77. Garcia was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Robert Adams, 36, of Arlington was arrested at 9:16 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 103 south bound.

Adams was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Jan. 17 At approximately 3:44 p.m. deputies, the Mt. Morris Police Department and the Mt. Morris Fire department and EMS responded to a two-vehicle accident in the 3700 block of West Illinois 64.

After an investigation it was learned that a 16-yearold female from Mt. Morris lost control of her vehicle on the snowy roadway.

The female’s vehicle slid across the roadway and struck an oncoming vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle, Jeffery Singley, 49, of Forreston, was transported to FHN Hospital in Freeport for minor injuries. The juvenile was issued a citation for too fast for conditions. The owners of both vehicles requested Dyers Towing remove the vehicles.

Justin R. Olson, 34, of Grandville was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Olson had and posted a $325 bond. He was released

from the Ogle County Jail and does not have to return for a court date.

Donaldson A. Peterson, 50, of Rockford was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Peterson had and posted a bond of $1,086. He was released from the Ogle County Jail and does not have to return for a court date.

Jan. 20 At 12:27 p.m. deputies, the Forreston Police Department, Forreston Fire Department, and the Forreston Ambulance responded to a one vehicle roll over accident on Illinois 26 at Lanark Rd. A gray Toyota Camry was traveling southbound on Illinois 26 when the vehicle drove onto the shoulder of the road.

The driver, Kevin M. Brill, 62, of Forreston corrected back on the roadway causing the vehicle to lose control.

The vehicle skidded across the road striking an embankment on the east side of Illinois 26.

The vehicle then rolled over in the ditch coming to a stop on its roof. Brill was extricated from the vehicle by the Forreston Fire Department and then transported to Freeport Memorial Hospital with minor injuries by the Forreston ambulance.

Alfredo Hernandez-Gonzalez, 43, of Indianapolis, Indiana, was arrested at 5:43 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 111. Hernandez-Gonzalez was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

OBITUARIES KARL BLACK On Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020, Karl Black, a loving husband and father of two children, passed away at the age of 79.

Karl was born on Aug. 26, 1940 in Oregon to Pete and Lillian Black (Merritt).

He graduated from Sunny Slope High School in Phoenix, Arizona in 1958.

He worked in the grocery business for 52 years, ending his career in Mt. Morris. On Nov. 26, 1966, he married Linda Knecht. They raised a son, Derek, and daughter, Tammie.

Karl had a passion for sports especially football, basketball and baseball. His love for sports began at a young age and he especially enjoyed his time playing

SHARON ANN WAGNER Sharon Ann Wagner, 76, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2020 in Dixon.

She was born Feb. 23, 1943 in Amboy, the daughter of Roy and Mary (Shaw) Ackerson.

Sharon graduated from Ashton High School in 1961 and followed in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother becoming the 3rd generation in her family to get their Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Northern Illinois University.

She married Lynn Cater at the Lighthouse United Methodist Church in 1964.

He preceded her in death in 1967.

She then married William B. Wagner on March 29, 1969. Sharon taught 2nd through 6th grade for over 31 years. She

on the Sunny Slope basketball team.

They won their conference three years in a row! If there was a game on TV, he was watching it, cheering out loud and yelling at the refs.

He loved to cheer on the ASU Sundevils, the UW Huskies and anything his kids played!

Thanks to Michael Jordan’s book, Karl discovered a love of reading and soon became a fan of the Clive Cussler series as well.

Karl also was a music lover. He played his music so loud that the neighborhood got to enjoy classics like James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls and lately the Jimmys.

He went to many concerts with Linda such as Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban

and Miranda Lambert.

Exploration was in his genes, whether it was a nature hike with Whale Watchers, a bus trip to Nashville, a weekend in Galena or a trip abroad to Costa Rica, Karl loved to learn about new places and cultures.

If you could describe a place as quaint, he especially wanted to go there.

Community was important to Karl. He was a member of Kiwanis, the Methodist Men’s Club, Whale Watchers and Old News (history club).

He looked forward to the local potlucks and bingo games, especially when the prizes were candy. Karl loved spending time with family. He was quick to smile and crack a dad joke.

He had a heart for others, especially

his granddaughters Lilly and Luci. When they were little, he could be found playing Barbies or having a tea party with them and loving every minute of it.

Karl was preceded in death by his grandparents, Peter and Alice, parents Pete and Lillian, and niece Kristy Burger.

He is survived by his wife, Linda, two children, Derek and Tammie, two granddaughters Lilly and Luci, brother, Gary (Pam) and sisters Judy and Carolyn.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Disciples United Methodist Church in Mt. Morris with Rev. Julie Bunt officiating.

Visitation was Saturday from 2 p.m.. until service time in the Church.

Sharon was instrumental to introducing computers into the classroom for young students at Jefferson school beginning with Commodore 64, teaching students and teachers alike.

Sharon loved to line dance and square dance and would teach her students to dance. She loved to play bridge with her friends, cards and card games of skill and creativity with her grandchildren.

She also liked to ride horses, going on

trail rides, and did barrel racing on her horses when she was younger.

She loved to travel throughout the United States in their RV and were members of the Avion RV Club.

She and Bill also spent many years with friends in Weslaco and Alamo, Texas.

She was predeceased by her parents, first husband Lynn Cater, daughter Janet Heier, and grandson Joshua Wagner.

She is survived by her husband Bill of Oregon, children; Robert (Peggy) Wagner of Baileyville, Joyce (Dana) LaPier of Belvidere, Jeff (Liz) Wagner of German Valley, Dawn Valdes Wagner of Sharon, Wisconsin, and Chad Wagner of Oregon.,

three sisters; Sandi (Jerry) Garkey and Vicki Dawson all of The Villages, Florida, and Pam (Gary) Ferguson of Red Oak, 14 grandchildren; Ryan, Heather, Rebekah, Ben, Ashlea, Kyle, Kyle H., Brooke, Isa, Emily, Juan, Faith, Jovani, and Carlos, 11 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews whom all caller her Aunt “Sis”.

Funeral service was 10:30 a.m., on Monday, Jan. 20, at the Lighthouse United Methodist Church near Oregon with the Rev. Matthew J. Smith officiating.

Burial was in the Ashton Cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 19 at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th Street in Oregon.

A memorial fund is established for the Lighthouse United Methodist Church.

Northwestern Mutual’s 2018 Planning & Progress Study says the average American has about $38,000 in personal debt, excluding home mortgages. A survey from the insolvency firm MNP Ltd. found that 31 percent of Canadians do not make enough to cover their bills and 46 percent are a mere $200 or less away from failing to pay debts at month’s end.

Researchers in the United Kingdom analyzed data from 1.4 million credit card holders and found that people typically choose ineffective methods to paying off debt. These tips can make it easier to get rid of debt.

Stop the flood Avoid new debt at all costs. Stop using credit cards, cease taking loans, do not buy any big-ticket items, and scale back on general purchases.

Get a lower interest rate Customers can call customer service centers to see if they can lower debt by negotiating a better interest rate, says Credit. com. Since much of a credit card payment goes toward monthly interest charges and not toward the actual balance, this can be a way to get a handle on debt. Some people prefer to use a balance transfer to get a lower rate on another card and try to pay off the balance before the promotional rate expires.

Consolidate or settle When debt is so substantial that debtors cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel, they might ask a creditor to accept a one-time, lump sum payment to satisfy the debt. Debt consolidation companies also can help by negotiating with creditors and streamlining debt into one payment per month instead of many.

With an effective plan in place, people in debt often can dig themselves out of financial peril.

Some consumers may feel that these are just numbers on a page. But in certain instances, such as when consumers attempt to buy a home, a credit score can have a dramatic effect on a person’s monthly budget. When borrowing to buy a home, borrowers with desirable credit scores may be eligible for considerably lower interest rates than borrowers whose scores fall into the “Very poor” or “Fair” range. Over the length of a standard, 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage, a low interest rate can save borrowers tens of thousands of dollars in interest fees.

onthly budgets help people make the most of their money. While a person’s income will affect how much they can spend on housing, food and clothing each month, another, more abstract factor can have a big impact on monthly budgets as well.

Nearly every adult has a credit score, which can fluctuate daily. Various factors, including a person’s age and track record in regard to paying bills, combine to produce a credit score. According to the credit reporting agency ExperianTM, credit scores range from 300 to 850, though most consumers’ scores fall somewhere between 600 and 750. The Fair Isaac Corporation create what’s known as a FICO® Score, which is used by many lenders to determine prospective borrowers’ credit worthiness. FICO® scores are often characterized using five terms:

• Very poor: Scores between 300 and 579 • Fair: Scores between 580 and 669 • Good: Scores between 670 and 739 • Very good: Scores between 740 and 799 • Exceptional: Scores between 800 and 850

In addition to paying more in interest fees, ExperianTM notes that borrowers with subpar credit scores may have to do even more to earn the trust of lenders. Borrowers whose scores fall into the “Very poor” range may be required to pay a fee or make a deposit when opening a new credit account, and some might not be approved for credit at all. Borrowers whose scores fall into the “Fair” may be classified by lenders as subprime borrowers, making it hard for them to open new credit accounts or secure loans without a cosigner. Consumers can benefit from knowing their credit scores and how to improve them. Taking measures to improve low or subpar credit scores can put more money in consumers’ pockets, both in the immediate and distant future. (MS)

Jan. 6, 2020 ployees a 401(k) plan with less administrative work, lower costs and fewer fiduciary responsibilities than individual employers now encounter when offering their own retirement plans.

According to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, questions can be an investor’s best friend, particularly when it comes to fees. Fees might be referenced in the fine print when signing an investment agreement, but they can be anything but small as a portfolio grows and accumulates more assets. The SEC notes that, over a 20-year period in which investors invest $100,000, 1 percent annual fees can reduce the size of a portfolio by as much as $30,000 (based on annual returns of 4 percent). In such a scenario, an investor paying 1 percent annual fees and netting annual return of 4 percent would have a portfolio worth $180,000 after 20 years. However, an investor who pays just 0.25 percent in annual fees and invests the same amount of money while earning the same returns would have a portfolio worth roughly $210,000 after 20 years. When opening an investment account, the SEC advises investors to ask about the total fees to purchase, maintain and sell a given investment. In addition, investors are advised to ask if there are ways to reduce or avoid fees. The SEC also recommends that investors inquire if there are any ongoing maintenance fees related to an account and how much an investment has to increase in value before an investor can break even. • Higher age for RMDs – Under current law, you must start taking withdrawals – known as required minimum distributions, or RMDs – from your traditional IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan once you turn 70 ½. The new law pushes the date to start RMDs to 72, which means you can hold on to your retirement savings a bit longer.

• Use of annuities in 401(k) plans – It will now be easier for employers to consider including annuities as an investment option within 401(k) plans. Previously, many businesses avoided offering annuities in these plans due to liability concerns related to the annuity provider, but the new rules should help reduce these concerns.

• No age limit for traditional IRA contributions – Previously, you could only contribute to your traditional IRA until you were 70 ½, but under the SECURE Act, you can now fund your traditional IRA for as long as you have taxable earned income.

• Limitation of “Stretch IRA” provisions – Under the old rules, beneficiaries were able to stretch taxable RMDs from a retirement account over his or her lifetime. Under the SECURE Act while spouse beneficiaries can still take advantage of this “stretch” distribution, most non-spouse beneficiaries will have to take all the RMDs by the end of the tenth year after the account owner passes away. Consequently, non-spouse beneficiaries who inherit an IRA or other retirement plan could have tax implications due to the need to take larger distributions in a shorter timeframe.

• No early withdrawal penalty for IRAs and 401(k)s when new child arrives. Typically, you must pay a 10% penalty when you withdraw funds from your IRA or 401(k) before you reach 59 ½. But now, with the new rules, you can withdraw up to $5,000 from your retirement plan without paying the early withdrawal penalty, as long as you take the money within one year of a child being born or an adoption becoming final.
