Streets complaint portal up and running

azoellner@shawmedia.com MT. MORRIS — A new way to report problems with Mt. Morris streets, terrace trees and sidewalks is available on the village’s website.

The new web page — which went live last month — allows residents to fill out a form detailing their complaint or request for maintenance, Village President Phil Labash said. Once submitted, the information automatically populates a spreadsheet that allows officials to more easily identify, prioritize and follow up on the handling of areas of concern, he said.

“Before, they hand a slip of paper to someone and it gets stuck in a pocket,” Streets Trustee Ed Higley said. “Next thing, a month or two goes by [and nothing’s been done].”

This new reporting system prevents

issues from getting lost in the pipeline of communication, he said.

Higley said he checks the spreadsheet daily and, if there’s something new, he contacts the resident to check in and find out more. The city tries to send someone out to at least evaluate the situation within 24- to 48 hours of receiving a report, he said.

The uniform reporting system is a big advantage because it allows city staff to be consistent in how they track and respond to requests, Labash said.

“If someone calls the superintendent of streets, a village trustee or the clerk, or whether they log it themselves, we all use that portal,” he said.

Residents with complaints or concerns still can contact city officials, and the officials will input the complaint into the system for the resident, Higley said.

Those filling out the online complaint form will be asked to provide: the date of

the request; their name, address, phone number and, if possible, their email address; select which area of concern is being reported — street repair or maintenance issue, sidewalk needs repair or replacement or a street evaluation is needed; and a brief description of the problem.

The request will be added to a running list and prioritized by streets department staff based on their evaluation.

If an email address is provided in the form, a confirmation email will be sent after the person clicks “submit.”

This is the first portal the city has made, but if it works well, it could lead to similar reporting systems for other kinds of complaints, Labash said.

“We’re trying to get a feel for this one first,” he said.

TRAGEDY IN POLO

Siblings are being cared for by relatives while DCFS investigates, agency spokesperson says

POLO – A gunshot wound that killed a 23-month old Polo toddler on Sept. 9 was self-inflicted, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle confirmed in a Monday post on the department’s web page.

The investigation continues, the post said. How the boy obtained the gun and whether any charges may be pending has not been released.

Polo police, sheriff’s deputies and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services all responded to a home in the 300 block of South Franklin Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9. The boy died soon after at KSB Hospital in Dixon.

Lee County Coroner Jesse Partington said on Sept. 10 that the toddler was killed by a single gunshot wound.

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office, which is the lead investigator, said in a news release on Friday, Sept. 10 that “foul play is not suspected at this time.”

The boy’s autopsy was conducted Sept. 10 in Peoria County, Partington said. It will be several weeks before the final report is in.

Polo police and Ogle County Sheriff deputies responded to a home in the 300 block of South Franklin Avenue on Sept. 9 where a 23-month-old boy was shot. The boy died at KSB Hospital in Dixon and police have said the shot was self-inflicted.

On Tuesday, the Department of Children and Family Services confirmed that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

Two other children were removed from the home that evening and are staying with relatives while DCFS investigates, agency spokesman William McCaffrey said.

Energy bill’s passage a ‘relief’ to Byron officials

azoellner@shawmedia.com BYRON — “Relief” is the word of the day around Byron, now that an energy bill containing provisions to keep the nearby nuclear generating station up and running is headed to Gov. JB Pritzker’s desk.

Illinois senators on Monday voted 37-17-3 to pass Senate Bill 2408, which Pritzker has said he will sign. Among the bill’s provisions are $694 million in subsidies over the next five years to support three nuclear power plants owned by Exelon Corporation, according to Capitol News Illinois.

Following the vote, Exelon announced it was preparing to refuel its Byron and Dresden plants as a result. The Byron Generating Station was schedule to begin going offline on Monday. Dresden, located in Morris, was slated to do so next month.

“I would say it was a complete sense of relief and elation,” said Christine Lynde, chairperson of the Byron Station Response Committee. “It was just, before that, there was such a disbelief that they could really go that long. So when it came down to the day [the plant was supposed to close], it was just a relief.”

When Exelon announced in August 2020 that it planned to close the Byron and Dresden plants, there was a lot of anxiety about how the closure would impact the school district, jobs, the housing market and more, Byron Mayor John Rickard said.

“All that kind of anxiety and fear of the unknown, this resolves that,” he

For the Byron Community Unit School District 226 Board of Education, the bill’s passage means they can return to some form of long-term planning, said Lynde, who also is president of the board.

“When they [Exelon] made the announcement a year ago, we kind of put everything on hold because, how do you move forward?” she said. “We had just finished creating this great strategic plan, got the community involved, and then we just hit the breaks on anything that would use any sort of funding.”

About 74% of the school district’s budget — roughly $19 million — comes

from the nuclear plant, Rickard said.

The Byron Fire Protection District sees $2.5 million from the plant, which is about 74% of its funding.

As such, the bill’s passage is cause for some relief, Fire Chief Phil De Mik said.

The 2020 announcement that the plant could be retired without state providing subsidies has been an agenda item at fire district board meetings for nearly a year. De Mik said the impact to services — whether responding to community needs or mutual aid calls to the wider area — was discussed at length.

“What would this do to us? … How long could we sustain our current level of service?” De Mik said.

In addition to providing fire depart-

ment services to the community, the district is trained on radiation decontamination drills and technical rescue training, should it have to respond to an accident at the plant and provide support to the plant’s own emergency services.

De Mik also is looking ahead: “Let’s see what kind of permanent legislation they can come up with. We don’t want to have to stare this down in another five years.”

A lot can happen in five years, though, Lynde said. Her hope is the federal government comes through some help for the nuclear industry to allow it to be competitive in the energy market, and that the Illinois Legislature continues to improve on the energy sector.

“If you want carbon-free baseload energy that’s reliable — weath er-proof, so to speak — nuclear is your only option,” she said. “Nothing else is going to produce that baseload energy you need. To talk about clean energy without nuclear power is oxymoronic.

“When people get a better understanding of that, I think that’s when we’re going to see real change,” Lynde said.

One day, the plant will close, Rickard said. Everyone knows that.

“In the meantime, my hope and plan is that we can diversify the economic base [in Byron],” he said.

“You’re not going to replace the plant, but how do you minimize its impact?

That would be by [developing] other commercial and retail businesses in and around town.”

Bill creates massive renewable, nuclear investment

jnowicki@capitolnewsillinois.com SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate put the final legislative stamp on an energy regulation overhaul bill Monday, sending it to Gov. JB Pritzker, who says he will sign it.

It’s the culmination of years of negotiation, and it marks a policy win on one of Pritzker’s biggest outstanding first-term campaign promises as the 2022 campaign heats up. The measure passed by a 37-17 vote, with Republicans Sue Rezin, of Morris, and John Curran, of Downers Grove, joining Democrats in support.

“After years of debate and discussion, science has prevailed, and we are charting a new future that works to

mitigate the impacts of climate change here in Illinois,” Pritzker said in a statement after the bill’s Senate passage. “(Senate Bill) 2408 puts the state on a path toward 100 percent clean energy and invests in training a diverse workforce for the jobs of the future. Illinois will become the best state in the nation to manufacture and drive an electric vehicle, and equity will be prioritized in every new program created.”

The final proposal forces fossil fuel plants offline by 2045, spends billions of dollars to subsidize renewable and nuclear energy to prevent plant closures, incentivizes the adoption of electric vehicles, funds workforce training programs, and requires union labor on the installation of renewable

infrastructure.

Advocates hailed it as a nation-leading climate bill, while downstate Republicans warned of its impact on consumer bills and energy grid reliability.

Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, said it sets the state on an “aggressive and progressive” path toward decarbonization and renewable energy adoption, while leaving pathways for future General Assemblies to reassess the state’s energy needs through follow-up legislation.

“Our goal all along was to enact reliable renewable and affordable energy policies that put Illinois in a position as the nation’s leader. That’s exactly what we’re doing here today,” Harmon said in closing floor debate.

“Now, don’t get me wrong, there will be more votes, there will inevitably be changes. Innovations that we can’t even imagine today will happen tomorrow and we or some other future group of legislators will act accordingly.”

Investments, cost increases The measure, Senate Bill 2408, aims to put Illinois on a path to a carbon-free energy future by 2050 by doubling the state’s ratepayer investment in renewable energy and further subsidizing the state’s nuclear fleet. It aims to increase the portion of the state’s energy produced by renewables from less than 8 percent to 40 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040.

The college recently updated some safety protocols because of the COVID19 pandemic, and that meant some people who planned to participate backed out, Satterlee said.

“I call it a successful event,” Satterlee said, pointing to how it’s still a new thing. “We were able to connect with them [participants] and hopefully will be able to recruit some of them.”

He said Amy Ortiz, who works for Rockford-based Lifescape, came up with the idea.

It’s a small way of trying to brighten emergency responders’ day and honoring them on the “somber anniversary” of the terrorist attacks, he said.

On 9/11, 343 New York City Fire Department personnel, 23 New York City police officers and 37 Port Authority officers were killed. More since have succumbed to lingering effects of the toxins they were exposed to that day.

“Our country was so great after

9/11 – we cared about each other and watched out for each other,” Whiteside County Sheriff John Booker said.

“Then I don’t know what happened. It kind of slipped and 20 years later we’re back in a spot where all we do is bicker, all we do is fight. We don’t watch out for each other.”

Booker joined Butler, the Ortizes and Cruz as a guest at the event.

“Having us out here, telling us ‘thank you,’ – the men and women who put on the uniforms daily don’t hear that enough,” Booker said. “They risk

their lives to do what we love to do, or we wouldn’t be in this profession.”

The quote Butler pulled out was by Winston Churchill: “All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope.”

“That’s our first responders,” Butler said.

Senators Stewart, Anderson react to energy bill vote State Sen. Brian Stewart on Monday said an energy reform bill was full of “poison pills.”

The bill was passed on a 37-17-3 vote Monday.

“It’s been nearly two weeks since the Governor and Senate Democrat leaders first jammed through energy reforms to promote special utility interests at State Sen. the expense of tried and true Brian Stewart, energy providers. Changes have R-45th District been made to the legislation since then, but I still stand in strong opposition,” Stewart wrote in a press release. “No matter what proponents are claiming, these ‘reforms’ have quite a few poison pills that will ultimately hurt Illinois ratepayers, businesses and consumers by significantly increasing utility rates.”

Continued from page 4 would push the state toward those ambitious goals is a massive increase of more than $350 million annually to the pot of money funding renewable projects. It also provides that more than $300 million already collected for renewables will be spent for such projects instead of being refunded to ratepayers despite previous deadlines having passed.

The bill also provides $694 million in total over a five-year period to subsidize three nuclear plants owned by Exelon Corporation, preventing the closure of a plant in Byron that Exelon said it would take offline Monday in the absence of legislative action. It issued a statement after the bill’s passage saying it would begin the refueling process.

Other expenditures include a $180 million annual investment in equity-based and “just transition” programs aiming to diversify the renewable industry and to provide out-of-work fossil fuel employees with a pathway to renewable energy jobs.

The bill also provides subsidies to convert coal-fired plants to solar or energy storage facilities at about $47 million annually starting in 2024.

While the subsidies and investment programs are staggered in their implementation dates, the Citizens Utility Board estimates that it will cause an increase to ratepayer bills of about $3 to $4 a month over the next five years.

In terms of percentages, bill sponsor Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Frankfort, said residential electric bills would increase by about 3-4 percent, commercial bills by about 5-6 percent, and industrial bills by about 7-8 percent.

Stewart said the bill puts in place a structure and process that will “insidiously work against nuclear power plants” and that it gave lawmakers two bad options — approve huge financial subsidies to wind and solar companies, paid by ratepayers; or start to dismantle the state’s fleet of nuclear power State Sen. Neil Anderson, plants.

“Who do you think will be R-36th District paying for all these special interest subsidies? What is being called the largest utility rate increase in Illinois history will drive more manufacturers and businesses out of Illinois,” he said. “It will hurt low-income to middle-income homeowners whose power bills will skyrocket. And Senate Bill 2408 is not a friend to

“What we do know is that it will be borne by all ratepayers in the state. I guess what we’re seeing and hearing today is that we’ll just have to watch our friends across the aisle pass this legislation, and then we’ll find out.”

The CUB analysis, meanwhile, said the investment in cheaper, renewable solar and wind energy could lead to lower costs for consumers over time.

Decarbonization, compromise Large-scale renewable projects will be required to have project labor agreements to employ union labor, and non-residential labor projects, with the exception of small churches, will be required to pay a prevailing wage.

That stipulation was part of the final compromise that brought union and environmental groups together on the bill, along with decarbonization provisions for municipal power plants.

Specifically, two municipally-owned coal-fired power plants – a City, Water, Light and Power facility in Springfield and the Prairie State Energy Campus facility in Marissa – had caused a stalemate, as the plants and the lawmakers within their districts pushed back on the hard 2045 decarbonization date.

The final bill provides that the facilities must be carbon-free by 2045, and must reduce carbon emissions by 45 percent by 2035. If they can’t, they have three years to comply or shut down

nuclear energy. I would have strongly supported provisions to protect the Byron nuclear power plant if they were presented in a stand-alone bill.”

State Sen. Neil Anderson, who represents Rock Island, Whiteside, Carroll and Henry counties, called the bill a “hand-out.”

“Instead of giving a hand-up to our clean energy sector today, a hand-out was given to those advocating for renewable energy, which subsidizes our most cleanest energy through nuclear power with inefficient sources like wind and solar,” said Anderson.

Anderson also criticized another aspect of the legislation, which he says grants private companies certain land rights. “Property owners will be forced to give up their land and livelihoods to a for-profit company. This is a clear violation of the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution and is just plain wrong.”

Other fossil fuel plants are required to go offline between 2030 and 2045, depending on the energy source and the level of carbon emissions.

With those plants going offline, nuclear energy, which provides more than half of the state’s energy mix, would become even more important.

But with only one nuclear plant in the MISO electric grid region which serves most of downstate Illinois south of Interstate 80, some Republicans warned of reliability issues.

Sens. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, and Terri Bryant, R-Murphysboro, said if the state’s fossil fuel plants are driven offline, Illinois will end up buying energy for a higher price from carbon-emitting power plants across state lines.

But Democrats say SB2408 specifically provides that the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, Illinois Commerce Commission and Illinois Power Agency conduct a study at fiveyear intervals to determine whether renewables and nuclear are doing enough for grid sustainability.

If they’re not, Rep. Robyn Gabel, an Evanston Democrat who was one of the lead negotiators in the House, said the agencies could decide to leave some of the coal- or gas-fired plants online.

“The first wave of plants to close would be 2030, and so 2025 we’ll start the planning process in terms of grid reliability,” Hastings said in a news conference following the bill’s passage.

Hastings said inaction on an energy bill would have led to the closure of at least one nuclear power plant, driving up energy prices far beyond any increase included in the bill.

Equity, electric vehicles The bill directs the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity

to create the Clean Jobs Workforce Network program, which establishes 13 hubs in different communities across the state that rely on community-based organizations to provide job training and a career pipeline for equity-focused populations.

It also establishes a “Climate Bank” within the Illinois Finance Authority to help fund renewable projects, as well as a Jobs and Justice Fund, run by a nonprofit entity, aimed at ensuring “the benefits of the clean energy economy are equitably distributed.”

Another program aims to train individuals recently released from incarceration for careers in the renewable energy field.

It also creates a Displaced Energy Worker Bill of Rights, requiring the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity to give advance notice of power plant or coal mine closures and to notify workers of available assistance programs.

The bill also sets a goal of putting 1 million electric vehicles on Illinois roads by 2030, aiming to do so through incentives, such as offering rebates on the installation of charging infrastructure in certain communities, provided prevailing wage is paid on the construction labor.

It offers a $4,000 rebate for electric vehicle purchases starting in 2022, but Hastings said that’s only in counties covered by the preexisting Alternative Fuels Act, meaning Cook and collar counties, because they pay into a fund from which the rebates will be paid.

I

n 1896 H. G. Kable organized the Mount Morris News Band and Charles Conode directed it. Harvey Kable played the sax and Harry played the baritone according to the history written by Lee Douglas, a member of the band.

I found the history written by Lee Douglas most interesting as he listed those recruited around 1929.

Howard C. Bronson had become director of the 129th Infantry Band at that time and they were pushing recruitment. Mr. Bronson had been with an Army and Navy band as a bandmaster. He also had played with the Sousa Band. His job with Kable Brothers was purchasing agent and director for the firm.

According to the history of Mr. Douglas these were the individuals arriving: “Jerry Huffman, (Sousa Band), Everet Gavin, (Ringling Circus), Albert Crosswait, (Ringling Circus), Charles Hodson Hagen-Beck, (Wallace Circus), Frank Rose, (Sousa Band), Les Palmer, (Pryors Band), Tom Buxey, (British Army Band), John Goucher, (Seven years Madison Theatre), Peoria, Ill.).”

When they played in 1933 at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago the head of events there stated, “Of course, you know that we have had probably the largest collection of bands ever assembled in our program and among all these, the 129th Infantry Band stands first in rank.”

In addition to the Chicago World’s Fair, the band played all over Northern Illinois and still managed to play each Saturday night at Mt. Morris at the old band shell. I remember one band member writing, “It was like we were on vacation all the time.” They were tremendously supported by the

Then in the 1930s, the Polo men became involved in the band. Richard Bentley, trombone, who had graduated from Polo High School in 1938, had already become part of the band while he was in high school. He talked Bill Maxey, trumpet, who had graduated from Polo in 1937, to come with the band. Beecher Bomberger, saxophone, who had graduated from Polo in 1936 also went with the band. I knew all those guys.

Another Polo guy was Dale Henricks, French horn, who was part of the band. I did not know Dale. He joined the band in 1937.

Other new 1930s band members were: Carl Kronberg, bass and bassoonist, came from Augustana College, Paul Boynton, clarinet, Rockford, Gil Silvius, string bass, Mt. Morris, Archie McAlister, flute and piccolo, Joliet, George Campbell, drums, Dixon, Al Burch, trumpet, Sterling, Don Marsh, clarinet, Mt. Morris, Richard Park, clarinet, Mt. Morris, Al Snap, trumpet, Freeport, and Merlin Sager, sax, Mt. Carroll.

Carl Kronberg was an experienced band conductor and he had his own band before he became a part of the 129th Infantry Band.

Many of these men had been accomplished musicians in high school and they could not afford to go to college.

They came from all over and joining the 129th was a way to continue their musical skills. The box from the museum contained programs and pictures as they traveled and performed.

While they were performing things were not good between our country and Japan. The hand writing was on the wall and our country was having difficulty realizing it. On March 5, 1941

The men in their stories said “they were federalized”. Federalized meant they were all brought together by our government. The band which was part of the National Guard was sent to

Camp Forrest, Tennessee.

When Pearl Harbor was bombed on Dec. 7, 1941, the band members found themselves being sent to many different places.

Oregon church to hold White Elephant Sale in October

Guardrail work along Illinois 2 between Rockford and Byron

Construction on Illinois 2 between Luther Drive in Byron and Beltline Road in Rockford will begin Monday, Sept. 20, the Illinois Department of Transportation said in a press release.

Work will improve guardrails and other barriers along the road, which runs along the Rock River.

One lane of traffic will be open and controlled by flaggers when workers are present. Collins & Hermann Inc. of St. Louis is the contractor of the $802,542 project, which is expected to be completed by May 29, 2022.

Ogle County Animal Control offers discounted microchips for dogs, cats on Sept. 18

If Fluffy the Feline likes to bolt outdoors when the opportunity arises, the Ogle County Animal Control has a solution that could help her get back home.

Dogs and cats living in Ogle County can get microchipped for $20 during “Microchipping Day” on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Ogle County Health Department building, 907 Pines Road, in Oregon.

No appointment is necessary between 8:30-10:30 a.m.

The $20 cost for each chip includes registration with Home Again Pet Recovery Service.

Microchips are placed under the skin and can be scanned for information as to ownership if the pet is lost and ends up at a vet clinic or shelter.

The clinic is for dogs and cats only and owners must be residents of Ogle County.

Dogs over 4 months of age must have a current rabies vaccination.

Microchipped dogs and cats will also receive a $5 discount per year on their rabies tag.

Serenity Hospice offering course on how to understand grief Serenity Hospice and Home will be starting a free, 8-week class, “Understanding Your Grief”, each Wednesday from Sept. 22 to Nov. 10.

The group will meet at The Serenity Hospice Home located at 1658 S. IL Rt. 2 just south of Oregon. The time will be in the evening and will be determined by the group at the first class.

The structure of the group will follow the book by Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt which covers 10 touchstones in the areas of physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual growth to help you through the grief process.

Wolfelt has written many books about healing after the loss of a loved one and is considered a leading grief educator.

The class will be facilitated by Cathy Warren, who is Serenity Hospice’s Bereavement Coordinator.

“I am very excited to offer a class like this one,” said Warren. “Our grief groups are usually open-ended and people come and go as they travel through their own journey of grief. This is a more structured approach and the participant will know exactly when it will end.”

GRAND DETOUR — From gourd art to stoneware pottery, visitors to the 72nd Grand Detour Arts Festival had plenty to peruse on Sunday.

Forty-six artists set up their booths on the grounds of the John Deere Historic Site selling and showing their creations from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. under

sunny skies and warm temperatures.

The juried show gave out 9 awards which were not available on Monday.

The event included live music by 5 bands, food from 6 vendors, and live blacksmith demonstrations.

Next year’s show is scheduled for Sept. 11, 2022.

Autumn on Parade to host ‘first-ever’ beer garden on Oct. 2

Autumn on Parade will host its first beer garden in the history of the festival on Saturday, Oct. 2.

This special day-ling event is part of the festival’s 50th anniversary celebration.

The beer garden will be located in the 100 block of S. Jefferson Street, between 3rd & 4th streets.

You must be 21 to enter. A cover charge will be collected, which will also include a first beverage.

s I enter my 25 th year of doing this, one person I am going to miss is Brian Weidman. He was the person who hired me part-time at the Dixon Telegraph in 1996.

Sports writing was the Amboy native’s lifeblood and now he is relegated to finding a new career after being told his position at Sauk Valley Media was eliminated.

This is a commonplace decision in the newspaper business and a sad state of affairs resulting in less and less coverage everywhere.

••• With fall sports cranking up, there is excitement in the air, as towns comes to life. And in some of these communities, the football and basketball coaches seem to carry more clout than the mayor.

To that end, I heard a pertinent

say, “I’ve hardly ever had a parent issue and that is a sad thing,” in reference to the lack of parental support in the Rockford public schools. “But, at least I don’t have a parent shadowing me and asking why his son or daughter isn’t playing.”

Compared to our local schools where parents pitch in and help out athletics, Rockford public schools suffer from lack of the such.

So what is the lesser evil – the parent who questions the coach, but is willing to step up and do their part as a ticket taker, concession worker, etc. or the parent who does neither?

••• On the volleyball front, Rockford Lutheran, Genoa-Kingston and Rock Falls have separated themselves as the elite in the BNC. The NUIC has too many good teams to count.

The Oregon girls golf squad is having a strong season and believe it or not, will be teeing it up for post-season play in a couple weeks.

The conference meet is this Wednesday and the Hawks will be a serious contender.

Sorry that Polo’s football opponent this week, Decatur Lutheran, has COVID issues and won’t be able to play. Besides losing a home game, the Marcos would potentially lose the momentum they’ve had after two big wins against Milledgeville and Amboy.

Re-scheduling a football game is tough enough on late notice, but try doing it in a state with only 23 other schools playing 8-man.

That’s almost impossible, forcing Polo to maybe look out of state.

Eastland-Pearl City can’t keep up with Forreston

ccutter@saukvalley.com LANARK – While the Eastland-Pearl City Wildcatz and Forreston Cardinals played the “3 yards and a cloud of dust” kind of running game Friday, it was the runs that didn’t fit that definition that wound up being the most important.

The Cardinals scored twice in the first half on plays of more than 35 yards after finding holes in the middle of the line and held on to win 34-13 in a Northwest Upstate Illini Conference game at Eastland High School.

After a one-score halftime lead, Forreston (2-1, 2-1 NUIC) poured it on in the second half with three more touchdowns to keep the Wildcatz winless.

The Cardinals are glad to be back on the winning side after a tough loss to Durand-Pecatonica last week.

After three plays in Forreston’s next drive, McKeon Crase found a hole in the middle and marched 45 yards to put his team on the board, but the 2-point try that followed failed, as the Wildcatz still led 7-6.

The next drive for the Wildcatz resulted in a punt, and the Cardinals put together a series of short-run plays that ended when Fiorello found the end zone on a 38-yard run through the middle; Forreston led 14-7 after the 2-point try was good. The score held up at halftime, as an EPC pass fell incomplete in the end zone with 3.6 seconds in the half.

“It’s never good when you start off with a fumble,” Fiorello said. “It hurts the team, but we faced the [issue] and we came back.”

Forreston limited the Wildcatz to only 94 yards on running plays and 57 in the air for the game, including just 93 yards in the first half, while Fiorello and Crase combined for 153 first-half yards. The Cards’ duo each eclipsed the century mark in total yards, Fiorello finishing with 115 yards on 17 carries and Crase with 105 yards on 13 rushes.

It was strictly a ground and pound affair in Stillman Valley’s 36-7 BNC win over Oregon on Sept. 10.

Midway through the third quarter, the Cardinals (2-1) had 323 yards on 49 carries and a 36-0 lead.

“I was pleased with how physical we were,” said SV coach Mike Lalor, whose team did not throw a single pass.

The only thing that stymied them was penalties.

“I’m disappointed in that. We must have had 200 yards,” Lalor said.

Actually, it was 10 for 95 yards, but it helped Oregon (1-2) keep early drives alive. Behind the running of Daniel Dominguez, the Hawks managed to reach Stillman Valley territory on its first two drives, but a lost fumble and interception gave the ball back.

“That turnover on the second drive changed things,” Lalor said.

The first half wound up being a lit-

tle too close for comfort for the Cardinals, with a big fumble loss and a couple of penalties that dashed the momentum at times.

“We have to find our groove and be consistent with everything that we’re doing,” Forreston coach Keynon Janicke said. “Every time something doesn’t go our way, it seems like we’re shooting ourselves in the foot or are self-sabotaging. We scored 34 points and won the game, great, but there

should have been a lot more points for us and a lot less for them. We’re still always happy with a win, but we just got to be more consistent and play more sound football.”

The team took Janicke’s halftime message to heart.

“He said, ‘This game can be completely different if you put your mind to it,’” Fiorello said. “He knows when we come together as a team and talk positive, we can do it.”

Wildcatz quarterback Kellen Henze had his team’s other score on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter. Late-game passes to try and catch up largely failed to pan out.

Forreston will look to continue its winning ways next week at Dakota, while the Wildcatz hope to get their first win of the season at home, in Pearl City, against Durand-Pecatonica.

Long drive lifts Polo Marcos past Amboy Clippers

AMBOY – There’s nothing like a long scoring drive to steal the momentum back after things get a little tight.

The Polo Marcos used a 15-play drive to suck 8:28 off the clock and turn a two-point lead into a 36-28 win over Amboy on Sept. 10 at The Harbor.

“We weren’t going to fold,” said sophomore Bock Soltow, whose 3-yard touchdown run capped the epic drive. “The coaches told us to get back in the game, and we just started pushing like crazy. We didn’t want to lose this game, so we took the momentum back and showed what we’ve got.”

Prior to that drive, things were getting a little too close for the Marcos’ comfort. After taking a 30-16 lead into halftime, Polo (3-0) was stopped on its first two drives of the second half.

Amboy (1-2) used that to spark its comeback.

Tucker Lindenmeyer’s 38-yard touchdown run made it 30-22, then the Clippers covered 55 yards in eight plays, with Lindenmeyer connecting with Brennan Blaine for a 27-yard scoring strike on fourth and 10.

A second straight missed two-point conversion still left the Marcos in front 30-28, but Amboy had turned the momentum in its favor.

“It was the coaches. They made us believe that we were still in the game, that we could come back,”

Lindenmeyer said. “It was a really good third quarter; we came out strong and fought back.”

But Polo had the answer, marching 61 yards on that 15-play drive by converting three third downs before Soltow crashed in from 3 yards out on a fourth-and-inches play.

But the Clippers still had life after stuffing Soltow on the conversion run, keeping it a one-score game at 36-28.

“That’s what kept us in the game, kept us fighting,” Lindenmeyer said. “We knew we had a chance, only down eight instead of 10.”

But Polo forced Amboy to go three-and-out and punt from its own 40-yard line. Still, the Clippers got the ball back after forcing a Polo punt, taking over at the Marcos’ 49 with 2:12 to play.

But after an 11-yard run by Lindenmeyer got Amboy to the Polo 38, he and Blaine got their signals crossed on a pass play. Lindenmeyer threw an out up the sideline, while Blaine cut the route back to the inside. Soltow read the throw and intercepted it along the Polo sideline.

“I was watching the wide receiver the whole time, hip-to-hip with him, and I knew as soon as I saw him look up, the ball was coming to me,” Soltow said. “I knew I had it. He shifted to the left, and the ball came to me, it was just perfect.”

“It was just a miscommunication,” Lindenmeyer said. “Neither of us was ready for what the other one did, and it turned out to be huge in their favor.”

Avery Grenoble got the ball three straight plays for Polo, and broke off a 15-yard run on third-and-4, sealing the victory.

Running a disciplined no-huddle offense, those drives were 53, 66, 90 and 70 yards.

“They’ve been using the same system for years and are always physi-

cal,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said.

The last touchdown of the half came after Oregon turned the ball over on downs with 3:24 left. Facing a thirdand-long, SV quarterback Kale Rauman went outside for 30 yards, as no one of the Hawk defense had contain.

With 10 seconds left in the half, Spain crashed over the goal line and both teams went to the break with SV

in complete control.

Oregon only managed 62 yards of total offense in the first half. Anytime quarterback Hunter Buchanan tried to pass, he was under pressure.

After Gage Henderson scored on a 26-yard touchdown run to make it 36-0, Lalor went to his bench and Oregon began to have success moving the ball.

“We couldn’t hold our gaps against them and they exploited it,” Schneiderman said.

A highlight for Oregon was kickoff returns, with Issac Reber and Shaun Blake having long gains.

Oregon travels to Winnebago this Friday.

“First down, that’s all I was thinking,” Grenoble said. “When we got that big pick from Brock, I said ‘We’ve got to finish this now, or they’re going to have another chance and it’s going to be a close one.’ I knew I was getting the ball, and I told myself that I had to get the first down. I just kept driving. It was great blocking from everyone on the line, so I just did what I had to do because they did their part.”

Amboy opened the game with a 46-yard drive, but a first-down pass was fumbled after the catch at the Polo 23. Soltow sprinted 77 yards for a touchdown on the Marcos’ first play from scrimmage for an 8-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

“The first play, with Brock breaking the big run, it was our lead blockers,” Grenoble said. “We saw their linebackers weren’t going up and filling, so we could get up o them, and Brock saw the hole and hit it hard, got one-on-one with the corner, and we like to have that because most of the time it gives us a good chance to break a long run. It was a great start to set the tone right away.

But Jordan Gulley returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards for a tying touchdown.

Polo then went 59 yards in nine plays, with Soltow scoring from the 3 for a 16-8 lead.

Amboy had the answer again, as a 20-yard run by Kye Koch set up Joe Quest’s 1-yard TD on a fullback dive to tie it at 16.

The Marcos then went 60 yards in six plays, converting a fourth-andinches at midfield before Grenoble broke off a 46-yard scoring run two plays later for a 24-16 lead.

The Marcos stopped Amboy’s next two drives in downs, and after punting it once themselves, they closed the first half with a nine-play, 63-yard drive that saw two thirddown conversions before Tyler Merdian hit Soltow down the field over a leaping defender for a 35-yard scoring strike on fourth-and-6 with 9.4 seconds left in the half.

Grenoble then intercepted Lindenmeyer’s heave downfield on the final play of the half.

Grenoble ended up with 154 yards on 25 carries, while Soltow had 146 yards on 20 rushes.

Lindenmeyer led Amboy with 127 yards on 14 carries, and also threw for 43 yards. Blaine caught three passes for 35 yards.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Sept. 8 Deputies responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash at approximately 11:49 a.m. in the 8100 block of Illinois Route 2. After an investigation, deputies learned that Christopher Coley, 33, of Oregon, was northbound on Illinois Route 2 when he crossed the center line and struck a guard rail, crossed the center line a second time and struck a utility pole in Grand Detour. The vehicle rolled over and struck a parked car.

Coley was transported by Dixon Rural EMS to KSB Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Coley’s vehicle was removed by Big Jim’s Towing.

Sept. 9 At approximately 11:09 a.m., Ogle County deputies stopped Laurrel Hayes, 53, of Rochelle, for driving with a suspended license. Deputies stopped Hayes at 1st and Washington streets in Oregon. Hayes was

transported to Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 10 Michael Schlenbecker, 18, of Rochelle, was arrested by Ogle County deputies after crashing into a house at approximately 5 a.m. Schlenbecker was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol, no valid insurance, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and illegal transportation of alcohol. Schlenbecker’s car was towed from the scene and Schlenbecker was transported to Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 11 At approximately 12:30 p.m., deputies responded to a domestic problem at 126 Windward Lane in Hillcrest. Prior to arriving on scene, the communications center advised a male had left the residence.

Shortly thereafter, Stephen Gadson, 32, of Hillcrest, was located at Casey’s General Store on Powers Road. After further investigation, Gadson was presumed to be under the influence. Gadson resisted arrest.

With the assistance of Rochelle Police

Department, Gadson was taken into custody for driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, as well as resisting arrest, and transported to Rochelle Community Hospital for minor abrasions. Once medically cleared, Gadson was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At approximately 1 p.m., deputies along with the Byron Fire Protection District and Byron EMS responded to a two-vehicle crash on the 5000 block of North River Road.

Police said Renee Felts, 58, of Oregon, was traveling southbound on North River Road.

Felts struck the rear end of a vehicle turning in front of her and continued approximately 1,300 feet south before crashing into a tree and coming to rest. Felts was transported to SwedishAmerican Hospital where she was admitted. While at the hospital, she was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and issued citations for failure to reduce speed, improper lane usage, no seat belt and no valid insurance. Felts received an I-Bond with a future court date.

At approximately 10 p.m., deputies assisted the Byron Police Department as they attempted to stop a Chevrolet Impala at the 700 block of Blackhawk Road in Byron.

Deputies and police pursued the vehicle for a short time before it crashed in the 9000 block of North Barker Road. After an investigation, Byron police arrested Patrick Larson, 21, of Rochelle, on multiple charges.

Larson also was cited for improper lane usage, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Larson was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 4:29 p.m., police investigated a theft call at Oregon SuperValu located in the 200 block of N. 4th Street, resulting in the arrest of Diane L. Harrod, 53, of Byron, for retail theft. Harrod was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 9 At 3:05 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the Oregon High School parking lot located at 210 S. 10th Street involving a 2012 Jeep driven by Shyanne A. Hanson, 27, of Mt. Morris, and a 2005 Ford driven by Mya J. Hernandez, 17, of Mt. Morris. No citations were issued.

Kimberly M. Schweizer, 39, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 8:24 p.m. for possessing an improper container of cannabis as a driver. This violation occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington Street.

2021 Heating Assistance LIHEAP - Colder weather is just around the corner and we all will be experiencing higher utility bills as we need to turn on the heat in our homes. There are two programs that help those with low income pay for their heating utility bills.

The LIHEAP program continues to accept applications for assistance with paying heating bills.

Tri County Opportunities Council is the agency that processes those applications and they will be available at two locations in Ogle County, Oregon and Rochelle, by appointment only.

Awareness and Acceptance Stress Management Program. This is a FREE program at the Rock River Center. The series consists of 5 sessions, scheduled as follows: Sept. 27, Oct. 4, 11, 18, and 25, from 1– 2 p.m.

Emphasis is placed on stress management taught through practical and interactive mindfulness-based activities to facilitate experiential learning. The program is a research-based and theory-driven program that meets National Health Education Standards.

There are five lesson topics: Intentions and Goal Setting; Awareness and Attention; Self-care: Stress Reduction and Relaxation; Communication and Relationships; and; Gratitude and Acceptance.

Among other things, participants will learn what mindfulness is and how to integrate it into daily life, alignment and form for over 25 strength and flexibility poses adapted from yoga poses, and relaxation techniques.

Born: May 4, 1928 in Oregon, IL Died: September 13, 2021 in Mt. Morris, IL OREGON – Willis B. “Willie” Cline, 93, lifelong Oregon resident, passed away Monday, September 13, 2021 in Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris. Born May 4, 1928 in Oregon, the son of Thomas and Ruth (Cox) Cline. Will graduated from Oregon High School in1946. His wife of 38 years Donna A. (Reinders) Cline predeceased him on June 9, 2019 and his first wife Rosemary (Moore) Cline predeceased him on August 6, 1974.

Willis was a US Army veteran who served our country during the Korean War. He retired from the USPS in Oregon, employed for over 36 years. He was a member of Oregon VFW Post #8739 and the Mt. Morris American Legion Post #143 for 62 years. Will was the last of the (7) CLINE BROTHERS to depart this world. Will never met a stranger – he really enjoyed visiting with people while on his daily walks in downtown Oregon and later with the staff and friends at Pinecrest. Will was a “good man” by always doing “what

was right.” Whether it was taking care of his wives when their health declined or opening up his house for in-laws and later his step-son and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; wives, Donna A. and Rosemary; brothers and sisters-in-law, Howard (Lois), Carl (Eva), Wilbur, Earl (Arlene), Nelson (Donna B.) and Richard. He is survived by his step-son, David Koeppen of Oregon; step-daughter, Doreen (David) Robinson of DeKalb; four step-grandchildren, Garetty Koeppen, Seth Koeppen, Derick (Amy) Robinson and Ashley Robinson; four step-great grandchildren, Noah, Emily, lily and Milo; and several very special nephews and nieces. His family would like to thank the caregivers at Pinecrest Manor for the wonderful care that they provided. We would also like to thank Serenity Hospice for their compassion. A final thank you to Dr. John Plescia for many years of care and support for both Will and Donna.

In accordance with Will’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held at Grand Detour Cemetery with Rev. Rodney Caldwell, Pinecrest Manor Chaplain, officiating. No visitation. Born: June 18, 1939 in Unionville, MO Died: September 10, 2021 in Rockford, IL Mary Ilene Cullor, 82, of Forreston, passed away Friday, September 10, 2021, at SwedishAmerican Hospital in Rockford.

Mary was born June 18, 1939, in Unionville, Missouri, the daughter of Francis and Mary (Norton) Medlin. On December 31, 1955, Mary married Luther Cullor in Unionville, Missouri.

Mary took on many roles in her life, farmer, homemaker, she worked at Micro, but most importantly of all loving mother.

Her yard reflects her love of flowers, flowers, and more flowers. In addition, she enjoyed camping with her husband and family dog Sammy. She loved her guardian

and protector Sammy.

She loved her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Surviving is her husband, Luther Cullor of Forreston, IL; and four children, Douglas (Karen) Cullor of Byron, Dwight (Hope) Cullor of Leaf River, Sue (Michael) Bariether of Rochelle, and Duane (Judy) Cullor of Freeport.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Robert, Neita, Jasper, Reva, Roy Lee, Neva, James, Francis, Clinten Carl, Iris Coleen, and Lucille Shirlene.

Funeral services were Wednesday, September 15, 2021, at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Forreston. Graveside service and burial were at North Grove Evangelical Cemetery.
