Trinity to celebrate 175 years with party Community is invited to attend on Aug. 14

azoellner@shawmedia.com From no place to call their own to constructing a third home. From standing roomonly to taking out loans to pay bills to somewhere in between. From in-person services to online ones to a combination.

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church’s congregation has experienced many ups and downs in its 175-year history, said the Rev. Josh Ehrler, who began leading Trinity in August 2013.

“I’ll leave it to the Holy Spirit to kind of floor us again, but we have experienced some incredible highs and incredible lows and we made it through all of them,” Ehrler said.

It’s a history worth celebrating — and that’s exactly what the Mt. Morris-based congregation plans to do.

Trinity is hosting a party at the Campus Square in downtown Mt. Morris on Saturday, Aug. 14. Everyone is invited, member of the church or not.

“Trinity would not exist without Mt. Morris,” Ehrler said. “It only made sense to us that, if we’re going to celebrate our history, then part of that is celebrating our neighbors and giving thanks for this community that we’ve called home all these years.”

Local bluegrass band, Grass Attack, will play a free concert from 7-9 p.m. and an ice cream social and offerings from Ogle County Pork Producers will be available from 6-7:30 p.m. The party is presented in cooperation with The National Straw Sculpting Competition.

This isn’t a fundraiser, Ehrler emphasized. It’s just a party — hopefully a fun one — with the concert at its heart. “[It’s] just an opportunity for people to hang out on a — hopefully not too hot — summer night and get some music and do a little dancing and just fellowship with each other,” he said.

Engaging the whole community — without a sale’s pitch attached — is nothing new to Trinity. Many of the church’s programs, ministries and educational opportunities are open to the general public.

A prime example is the summer lunch program, which is a partnership with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to provide daily meals to those 18 and under, Ehrler said. Out of that program grew another — two partnerships with the University of Illinois-Extension.

In the first, Extension staff come to Trinity and offer an “outdoorsy physical activity” one day a week. The other is a junior chef program, where kids can learn how to prepare meals in Trinity’s commercially-licensed kitchen.

Those kinds of programs are part of what drew Connie Seavey to Trinity. The Franklin Grove resident joined the church in June. “[Ehrler] makes no bones about it that this little church in Mt. Morris is not just called upon to come to church on Sunday and worship and feel good and that would be the end of it. No, no, no,” Seavey said. “We are part of our church community, but we are part of the [Mt. Morris] community and the surrounding communities. We’re a part of the Northern Illinois Synod and we’re part of the church at large.”

The community outreach efforts are something the congregation has managed to modify and expand in recent years, said Rob Urish, a church council member.

“Back in the day, as they say — and I’m thinking back in the ‘50s and ‘60s — my recollection is that the church was more inner-focused, that we didn’t reach out to the community,” said Urish, who joined Trinity 75 years ago at age 2.

Inwardly, Urish is quite proud of the current efforts. “I feel like we’re fulfilling the call that Christ has challenged us with to attend to the needs of the impoverished, the needy — whether it’s financial or social or emotional,” he said.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced church leaders to quickly find creative ways to continue their programs and worship services, Ehrler said. They took it as an opportunity to reconsider what worship looks like and means.

The congregation’s general willingness to change and grow is what helps keep Trinity thriving, he said. One of their core values is being open to experiencing new perspectives and to creating new opportunities.

“Just about everything that we can put on the table is up for evaluation,” Ehrler said.

“To question it, to say, ‘Is this still the way

we want to do it?’ And, if it needs to be changed, then we change it to adjust to the needs of our community, the needs of the people who are worshiping here.”

CHURCH HISTORY

Founded in 1846 by the Rev. Nicholas J. Stroh, Trinity originally was known as First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Mt. Morris, according to church records. The name changed in 1921 when the church was incorporated.

The church fully was organized March 13, 1853, with 28 charter members signing the constitution.

Membership has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 125 in 1880 to 727 in 1966.

In 2003, the average weekly attendance was 179. By 2018, it had dropped to 89.

Trinity’s first church services were held in the chapel of Rock River Seminary — a Methodist institution — but conflicts in its use prompted the congregation to instead gather at a school a few miles east of Mt. Morris, the records show. When a school was built in the village, services moved there and remained for several years.

On May 2, 1856, a dedication was held for Trinity’s first church building, located at the corner of what now is South Ogle Avenue and East Center Street. Construction took three years, and the building’s cost was approximately $3,000.

The church’s second building — dedicated Nov. 10, 1878 — was at the corner of South Seminary Avenue and West Main Street. It cost $7,088, including furnishings.

The congregation’s third and current home — built at a cost of $350,000 — is at 308 East Brayton Road. The first services were held in May 1952, and it was dedicated Sept.

7, 1952.

ehinton@oglecountynews.com The David L. Rahn Junior High is in “sound shape” for a structure built in the early 1950s and can still serve as a “viable educational facility”.

That was part of a letter from the Rockford architect who was cited during Monday’s presentation to the Oregon School Board by an “Advisory Committee” formed 60 days ago in response to a proposal to close the school in Mt. Morris.

Rob Urish, a member of the Advisory Committee, offered a preview of the 90-minute presentation by saying it would offer counter points to the rationale made by Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney to close the school at the end of the 2021-22 school year and move 7th and 8th grade students to the Oregon High School, located 5 miles to the east.

“During the course of our presentation we will show conclusively that the cost to upgrade DLR, in the context of an approximately $15 million operating budget, and multi-million dollar Health Life Safety bonds is minimal, some would even say ‘trivial’, “ Urish said in a written statement. “That the financial impact of continuing to operate DLR in place is not only sustainable, but there is no evidence to suggest that it is not indefinitely sustainable.”

Urish said a study commissioned by Mahoney in 2020 was incomplete.

“While the experts certainly have credible qualifications, the focus of their study was narrow, even superficial at times, as it failed to adequately consider changes in EAV, DLR condition, student experience, community impact, and the like,” he said. “And lastly, Student Experience goes farther and deeper than implied in the rationale statement.”

In May, Mahoney announced a proposal to close DLR, the last school remaining in the village of 3,000, due to decreasing enrollments and increasing maintenance costs. He outlined his proposal to close the school at two school board meetings, a Mt. Morris Village Board meeting, and a Town Hall meeting, held in Mt. Morris in May. At the May 25 Town Hall meeting, several of the 75-80 people attending gave impassioned pleas to keep the school in town with a couple others asking for more details and a delay in any decision until more community inout was given. The Oregon School Board agreed in June to delay a decision on the proposal until August.

He said the building needs $6 million in repairs and is costing the district’s budget about $400,000 a year.

He said other measures to cut spending over the last 5 years have already been undertaken, including cutting the teaching staff 14% and the administrative staff 28%.

He also said the most recent setback for the district was the results of the state-required 10-year Health, Life, Safety survey of the district buildings that concluded nearly $6 million in state-mandated improvements are needed, including asbestos removal, at DLR. The school district could issue bonds to pay for the work, which would then be passed on to taxpayers as debt-service, Mahoney said.

“Let me be clear about this. We don’t have to do all of this. We can kick the can down the road and not do any of this. We can try to keep delaying, but at some point we have to address these issues,” he said in May. Ele c t ric al , r oo f, a n d s ec ur i ty upgrades have been made at DLR since the two school districts consolidated in 1994. The consolidation occurred after the Mt. Morris School District dissolved due to financial reasons.

Mahoney said he commissioned a study from the University of Illinois at

Springfield in 2020. That study concluded that closing DLR would save the district more than $200,000 a year in operational costs.

“Those savings, along with COVID federal funding and rising tax revenues (based on increased property values, not increased tax rates) should ensure the district is on sound financial footing moving forward,” Mahoney said in a letter to parents.

Mahoney said the pros of closing DLR include: allowing junior high students to have access to additional elective courses at the high school; aligning the curriculum more closely and providing more frequent opportunities for staff to collaborate; bringing more coaches/sponsors to a building where some sports/activities have no coaches in the building; and allowing for more staff collaboration while also giving younger athletes more immediate exposure to older athletes.

Monday night, Urish called Mahoney’s recommendation to close DLR ”a shortsighted idea, which will not only preclude future opportunities, but is potentially harmful to our communities’ children”.

Urish said the Advisory Committee’s presentation included “numbers and details” to support the committee’s recommendation to keep DLR open indefinitely, explore alternative

funding techniques which can be used to make only the “urgent” and “required” repairs to the building complex, and study and evaluate the “pros and cons” of transforming DLR into a true middle school.

Bruce Obendorf, a former school board member and retired accountant, said he had reviewed the district’s financial statements and he feels the district is not facing financial hardship and has had 2 years of balanced budgets.

“Oregon is in a good position,” he said referring to the district’s finances.

He said the advisory committee was not advocating raising taxes, and instead, was projecting growth in Eqaulized Assessed Valuations (EAVs) for the next 2 years.

“We are not recommending a tax increase,” Obendorf said.

Obendorf said he and 3 others toured DLR with Stephen Nelson, an architect with Larson & Darby Group in Rockford.

A 3-page letter written to the advisory committee from Nelson was presented to Mahoney and each member of the school board.

In that letter, Nelson wrote: “The building overall is not new, as you know, and a building of this vintage

Lawmakers call for action on area nuclear plants

dbarichello@shawmedia.com State lawmakers representing the Byron and Dresden nuclear power plant districts are calling for the General Assembly to reconvene as soon as possible to save the plants from closing.

Exelon Generation, owner of the nuclear plants at Byron and Dresden (located just outside of Morris), filed decommission reports last week, among the final steps required by law to retire the two plants this autumn.

Deputy Senate Republican Leader Sue Rezin (R-Morris), Sen. Brian Stewart (R-Freeport) along with Deputy House Republican Leader Tom Demmer (R-Dixon) and House Republican Conference Chair Leader David Welter (R-Morris) issued a joint statement calling for legislative leaders to meet and extend Illinois’ renewable portfolio standard.

of utility customers will pay higher energy costs and an environmental impact “equivalent to putting 4.4 million additional cars on the road, emitting carbon and other harmful sources of air pollution,” will be felt, according to their statement.

“Too much is at stake to wait for the demands of every individual interest group to be satisfied in a

comprehensive energy package,” the lawmakers said. “We must act now to pass the provisions there is broad agreement on, which include preserving Illinois’ nuclear fleet and extending the state’s renewable portfolio standard with incentives for critical solar and wind initiatives.”

Exelon has said the nuclear plants face revenue shortfalls in the hundreds of millions of dollars because of low energy prices. Exelon said coaldriven power plants have an unfair competitive advantage because of market policies. The company also said if lawmakers cannot find a solution, the same market inequalities would force the company to close facilities at Braidwood and La Salle in a few years.

A decommissioning process was started Thursday for Dresden and Byron plants.

The proposed comprehensive energy package involves the decarbonization of coal plants in Illinois, which he said is complicated by the debt tied to municipalities utilizing them and the labor at those facilities.

He said environmental groups look at Illinois’ most recent progressive agenda and have expectations the state will begin to address aspects of climate change, which includes phasing out coal and gas plants.

Exelon appeared to be close to receiving $700 million in relief, but state lawmakers left in June without a deal. Mixed into play is Exelon is the parent company of ComEd, which has been embroiled in a scandal over favorable legislation at the statehouse.

Gov. JB Pritzker’s office and Exelon agreed on aspects that would keep the nuclear power plants running, but lawmakers were unable to agree on other aspects of the comprehensive energy bill, according to the Associated Press.

“You have big labor, municipal officials, an election year, all playing a factor here,” Redfield said. “It’s complicated, which makes it harder to find the compromise.”

Filing decommissioning paperwork should not be seen as Exelon looking for leverage – while it may create some – it begins a shutting down process that takes a period of time, he said.

“We’re not at the point of no return, but at this point, there has to be something solid to pull back from that,” he said.

Redfield said it would be hard to close any of the nuclear fleet without a significant bailout in place to help those communities that would suffer the loss of jobs and tax revenue.

Instead, he said, it is more likely the state will seek enough common ground to keep the plants open, even if that means pushing the can down the road in some aspects of the energy bill.

“With an election year, everyone wants to have a win they can show,” he said, noting that’s the real challenge.

With that said, Rezin, Stewart, Demmer and Welter are reminding their colleagues, the clock is ticking.

“We are committed to passing these items now and coming back to the

“Come out to the lawn of the Weiskopf Observatory and enjoy this annual meteor shower event,” said Mark Herman, superintendent of education. “Bring lawn chairs and blankets and dress for the weather. Children must be with an adult.

This event will be cancelled in case of cloudy skies.”

Fair royalty crowned after hiatus due to pandemic

ehinton@oglecountynews.com Ninety-degree temps combined with 96 percent humidity may have been “no sweat” for the 40-some contestants at the 2021 Miss Ogle County Pageant, but it was a steamy Wednesday night for the 150+ crowd that sat through the 5-hour event on July 28.

“We all are tired of the ‘P’ word and I don’t mean ‘pageant’,” quipped Pageant Director Michelle Jozefowicz late Wednesday night as she spoke before the 2021 Miss Ogle County was crowned.

Jozefowicz, a teacher in the Meridian School District, said once it was learned that there would not be a state pageant or state fair in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, a decision was made to keep the 2019 Ogle County royal court for another year.

“We decided to pause everything for our current court. But once it was past us we moved forward with hope of what would be,” Jozefowicz said. “My school year got even crazier, more bizarre than what I ever thought possible, but we came through on the other side and here we are.”

Jozefowicz praised the Ogle County Fair Board for fighting through a difficult year that also included the sudden death of longtime fair president Harlan Holm. The Oregon farmer and ardent volunteer for the fair passed away last fall.

“We had a huge loss this year in losing Harlan,” said Jozefowicz, who asked for a moment of silence for Holm. “It was a shock and left a huge hole in the fair family.”

Outgoing 2019 Miss Ogle County Adrianna Costa of Byron said it had been an honor to represent the county for 2 years.

“Thank you for letting me be your queen for 2 years,” said Costa.

The event started at 5:30 p.m. and ran until 10:15 p.m.

Little Mr. and Little Miss were the first winners announced with Little Miss going to Alayna Doane, 8, of Monroe Center and Little Mr. to Luke Gehrke, 7, of Byron, Both Doane and Gehrke had to remove their cowboy hats before being crowned.

Young Miss was Addison Dakota and Junior Miss was Ruby Melvaney, 15, of Stillman Valley.

Emma Thurow, 18, of Davis Junction, was named 2021 Miss Ogle County and Daysha McLain, 20, of Oregon, was named runner up.

Contestants ranged in age from 5-21. The pageant mimics the Miss Illinois Queen Pageant where the 2021 Miss Ogle County will compete for the title of Miss Illinois County Fair Queen.

The “Queen” is judged on the following: personal interview with the judges; 1-minute speech; physical fitness; on-stage questions; and evening gown stage performance.

The pageant, along with carnival rides, and tractor pull, kicked off the 5-day fair held at the fairgrounds west of Oregon.

Fair names venue in memory of late Harlan Holm

ehinton@oglecountynews.com Harlan Holm would have liked the sea of “Massey red” that dotted the landscape at the Ogle County Fair on July 29.

Hundreds of fair-goers came dressed in red as a tribute to the longtime fair board president who passed away suddenly last August at the age of 65 as he worked at his farm northeast of Oregon.

Holm, a Massey Ferguson fan, usually wore red during fair week to remind all the other farmers at the fair that Massey was his tractor of choice.

Holm’s family, including his wife, daughter, mother, and brother all wore red T-shirts on Thursday when they were called to the front of the grandstand stage before the start of

the tractor and truck pull.

They watched as a large “Welcome Back” banner at the top of the stage was lowered to reveal the venue’s new name “Harlan Holm Memorial Track”.

“Now the Ogle County Fair Board has dedicated this grandstand area to the memory of Harlan Holm and his efforts of fair play and hard work. Harlan didn’t hand build everything at the fairgrounds, but he organized most of it and it is only fitting that we should dedicate this particular facility to him,” said Dave Palmer of 3D Sound who worked with Holm during the fair.

Palmer said he hopes the designation will help people “do things correctly” and serve as an example of Holm’s humble work ethic for future generations.

“Thank you so much fair board and all of you fans out there,” said Patri-

cia, Harlan’s widow. “He did have a big service heart, but he loved every minute of it. He lived and breathed it and this means a lot to us.”

Harlan would arrive before the fair opened each day and stay well after it closed, often until 2 or 3 a.m. And then he’d come back and do it all over again.

“That’s how important it was to him,” said Brad Holm, Harlan’s son, in a September 2020 interview. “Several events were really important to him like the tractor pulls and the rodeo.

Seeing all the people kept him going.”

While the fair was Holm’s focus all year long, he also was active in Oregon Together and the Rockin’ River Fest and was named Oregon Chamber of Commerce’s Volunteer of the Year in 2017.

Debbie Dickson, who was the Chamber’s executive director in 2017, said Holm had great foresight, the

ability to listen to discussion around a table, and then figure out the best way to serve the community going forward. She said volunteering was his passion.

“I don’t think anybody could estimate the number of hours,” Dickson said. “I don’t think it’s even possible.

He was first-in, last-out and doing things on his own. It’s thousands of hours.”

On Thursday night, Patricia said she overheard a tractor puller’s wife mention that her husband never wears red.

“I had to laugh about this, but I believe I overheard a tractor puller’s wife make a comment something about this was the only day that her husband would be wearing red so I assume he’s a John Deere green guy,”she said. ‘Sorry guys, but Harlan was all red, all Massey.”

Tough night for local bull riders at the county fair

ehinton@oglecountynews.com The Big Hat Rodeo bulls had zero empathy for the 5 riders who tried to stay in the “saddle” for 8 seconds at the Ogle County Fair on July 30 – including two Polo teens.

Colton Gunder, 18, of Polo was the first competitor out of the chute and was tossed in about 1.5 seconds.

Then Joe Krupski of Cherry Valley and Bernie Schneider of Elkhorn, Wisconsin stayed on top of their bulls a tad longer before they both hit the dirt.

The final rider was thrown, stepped on and then smacked by his bull which earned him a trip to the Mt. Morris Ambulance which was on-site for the event.

The number 4 competitor, Alex Davies, 18, of Polo looked pretty solid until his bull did a major 360 tossing him parallel into the air and eventually unceremoniously to the ground.

“Yeah, I made the first corner on him pretty good, but I lost my feet when he came to the front end and I just saw the ground like 6 feet above. It wasn’t good,” a frustrated Davies said.

Davies has been bull riding for about a year and a half after graduating from Polo High School in 2020. Gunder graduated from Polo in 2021 and the pair have been hitting the rodeo circuit ever since.

“We’ve been everywhere from Minnesota to Oklahoma,” Davis said. “In fact, Colton and I are going back to Oklahoma Aug. 13.”

The duo will be also competing at the Carroll County Fair in Milledgeville on Aug. 5.

“The sixth we are going to the Professional Championship Bullriders in Woodstock, Illinois and then we’ve got Oklahoma,” Davies said.

A packed grandstand watched competitors steer wrestle, barrel race, and team rope, all intertwined with comic relief by rodeo clown Dusty Meyers.

Meyers drove a little brown truck out onto the Harlan Holm Memorial Track which had the letters PMS on its side. “This is a Postal Mail Service,” he told the crowd as he tossed fake packages out the back. “We deliver once a month. I had to get another job last year because I found out ‘rodeo clown’ was not a ‘essential’. ” Meyers also had a “mock western shootout” with 4 kids from the stands. Each participant was judged on how best they fell when “shot” by the cowboy.

Joseph Sardegna, 11, of Belvidere won when he jumped and flopped to the crowd’s delight.

“Well, I just thought you just kinda die,” he said when asked about his winning strategy.

“I shoot him all the time with paintballs,” said his 19-year-old brother, Robert.

Prior to the start of the rodeo, organizers held a “Riderless Horse Ceremony” in remembrance of Harlan Holm, the president of the Ogle County Fair Board who passed away in 2020.

“Join us as we pay our respects to Harlan,” said the announcer. “You can see on the arena floor that beautiful American quarter horse. And you can see, that tonight, there is no one sitting in that saddle. You see friends, we know our good friend Harlan has moved on to greener pastures.”

Crashin’ and smashin’ all part of demolition derby

ehinton@oglecountynews.com A Sterling woman had a wild ride at the Ogle County Fair’s demolition derby on July 31 and she was more than ready to do it all over again.

“I just sent it and I guess I caught the wrong way and flipped. I thought, ‘Holy crap, I am upside down’, ” Dezirae Montiel, 22, of Sterling, said shortly after her Open Wire Compacts race. “I was kind of shaken up. I’ve never flipped over before. I mean it does happen.”

Montiel put the pedal to the metal on the black Toyota Camry and headed east across the dirt track amongst 15 other cars when the Camry’s right front caught the back end of another car, tipped, and slowly rolled onto its side. Action was immediately stopped and the capacity crowd first cheered and then became quiet, hoping all were safe.

With help from derby workers and firefighters from Stillman Valley, Montiel and her passenger Michaela Lebarron, 21, of Rock Falls, climbed out of the Camry on their own power and stepped away form the car laid as it laid on the dirt track on the

driver’s side.

The car was then rolled upright by three derby officials and with a tweak to a gas line, it fired back up and Montiel and Lebarron climbed back in and went right back to crashin’ and bashin’.

“I thought we were done because there was gas burning everywhere, but it turned out to be a return gas line that was leaking. They just taped it up and we went back in,” she said.

Lebarron said she was also surprised when the car flipped onto its side.

“We were both like whoa,” she said.

Lebarron has been a passenger in a demolition car several times and has been a driver once.

The duo ended up taking second place. “I’m fine,” Montiel said. “I got back in and there and I took second place.”

Saturday night’s run was Montiel’s sixth derby.

So far, she has had one first place finish. “I got first last year, but I think this is the best I’ve done,” Montiel said. “I’m pretty sore, but it was worth it. It’s fun.”

Montiel wasn’t sure what year the Camry was, but knew it only took about a week to transform into

her demo derby ride.

Montiel was the second Sterling woman to do well in their races at the derby held on the Harlan Holm Memorial Track.

Shaleigh Smith, 24, and her passenger, Dakota Cantu, 20, took first place in the Open Wire Young Gun/Women event.

Her 2002 Buick LeSabre beat out 3 other entries to win the $1,500 first prize.

“We bought it $300,” said Smith who has been driving since 2016.

“We had a bumper and metal so I’d say we put about 50 bucks in it,” said Cantu.

The couple, along with Cantu’s 16-year-old brother, Phoenix, took just 3 days to get the car prepped for the race—minus all the labor of course.

In another crowd-pleasing division, the Open Wire Truck, Chris Cade of Chana used his pick-up truck to pin the Chevy Suburban of Branden Albano of Polo against the cement barrier until it stopped running.

And 10 entries battled in the Mini Van/SUV derby to wild cheers from the crowd.

‘Square’ houses are common in Ogle County area

Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

By OTTO DICK During our daily trips in Ogle County Marilyn and I see many square houses. We’re guessing there are several thousand square homes in Ogle County.

The American Foursquare Houses popular between 1890-1930 were known as a box house, cube house, double cube house or simply a square type of American House. This style became known as a typical American House.

It was economical to build and today can be found in neighborhoods and farms across Ogle County.

It’s easy to spot a square home by its symmetrical appearance. These square houses have pyramidal shaped roofs with a central roof dormer which gives lighting to the third story attic. Many of these houses have a wide one story porch.

The first floor usually has four rooms including an entry foyer, living room, dining room and kitchen.

Upstairs three bedrooms and a bath are located in their own corner of the house assuming the owner wanted an indoor bath.

In one of the early Sears Square House plans, the bath was labeled toilet or store room. The rooms in the square designed house are usually square shaped.

The front of many square houses had a central front door and equal groupings of windows on both sides upstairs and downstairs. Some had an offset front door with windows above this offset on the second floor.

Not all square houses are alike. Exterior siding was masonry, sculpted cinder block, brick, stucco, clapboard or shingle siding.

Some clapboard houses featured clapboard siding on the first floor and wood shingle siding on the second floor.

Some dining rooms featured a bay window to break up the straight lines of the house. (President Bill Clinton’s birthplace is a square house.)

When these houses were ordered they came in a boxcar with a book of directions and all the parts pre-cut and numbered for self-assembly.

These houses were particularly common in neighborhoods near rail-lines. These houses known as Workingman Foursquare Houses had a pyramidal hip roof and full tall basement underneath.

Company towns developed immediately before and after World War I often have clusters of one story foursquare houses.

Sears offered 15 different styles of the foursquare houses. Sears also sold prefabricated homes in the foursquare style between 1908 and 1940. They sold prefabricated houses in 370 designs. Foursquare designs were the company’s best selling house designs.

The American Foursquare or Prairie Box was a post Victorian Style house which had many features with the Prairie Architecture pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Wright designed his own variations on the foursquare, including the Robert M. Lamp House, a fireproof house costing $5,000.

He inspired other architects to design foursquare houses.

Peter Hastings left his footprint in Oregon, a

Frank Lloyd Wright style house built in 1907 at 600 N. 4th St. The price of this house was $11,475 with construction starting July 15, and the contract stipulated it must be finished by Dec. 1.

Information about the Hastings house appeared in an article in the Jan. 2, 1908 Ogle County Republican newspaper. The headline was “Handsome new Residence Recently Completed in This City by P. E. Hastings”.

hat day in the museum as we visited with Ogle County Museum people, Rebecca Middleton’s name came up again. Linda wondered if I had an advertisement from in the newspaper about Rebecca being a milliner.

I sent my helper to find her file. Neither one of us could figure out where it went.

Later when all was calm, I suddenly remembered that Rebecca was under milliners and not under her own name. The file was under Polo Businesses. Now that I have more information on Mrs. Middleton we have a file under her own name.

When Kari Mohn had emailed me earlier, she wanted to know if the home of Rebecca was still there. Kari had taken a picture of the house, but did not put down the street or where it was located.

When she sent me a picture of the house there was the elevator in the background. It had been kitty corner across the street from Aplington House and next door to McConaughy Clinic. The clinic was still operating in 1982.

When I acquired all the hats at the museum, I would look out at Rebecca’s house. I would think that we could redo her house and have an old fashioned millinery shop. But all that takes money and the day came when the old house was simply torn down and that was that. Linda did find where Rebecca’s home had been on Franklin Street as she researched Rebecca Middleton.

Rebecca was selling out her business in 1910. In the TCP of June 9, 1910 she advertised a long counter,

Polo Historical Society 36 inch show case, and 24 yards of almost new carpeting. She is finished with her business. She had been in business since 1877 and so I guess it was time for her to retire.

Her husband, Sam, was a millinery salesman so perhaps he was on the road in the area.

Other milliners in Kett’s History of 1878 were: Mrs. S. G. Winn, 1861,Mrs. J. Vickers, 1875, Miss Jennie Mitchell, and Mrs. Atkins, 1861. One milliner not here in 1878 when Kett wrote the history was Miss Jennie Perkins. She came in 1860 and by 1878 was evidently gone.

When Jennie arrived in Polo on November of 1860 at the little depot she found herself stranded with a sea of mud before her.

As she said in her letter later on, “Polo at that time was certainly not very attractive.”

Saloons seemed to be everywhere and animals were loose in the streets. But she had spent all of her money to get here so she had to make the best of it as she gathered up her belongings and waded through

Later in the 1900s came the Hackett sisters. Niece Mary Ann was in my Class of 1950 and she later wrote me many stories of the hats they made. Her aunts were Mary and Kate Hackett.

Mary had even been a teacher but quit her teaching to go into business with her sister Kate. Polo had many milliners at the time frame when you always wore a hat.

always has ongoing issues. For a building of this vintage, I found that overall it is still a reasonable sound, solid and usable building. It does present some limitations based on how school buildings were designed during that vintage, but that is very common to find in schools from this era.”

Nelson said the “overall structure” of the building seemed to be in “very sound shape”, but some improvements were needed.

“We did see some specific plumbing/piping issues that I would expect in a building this age and they should also be addressed over the next 5 years or so, along with some older bathroom fixtures such as the urinals that go down to the floor,” he said in the letter.

Nelson said cost estimates that were projected in the Health Life & Safety Survey would be just a “fraction of the cost to build a replacement school, down the road”.

“Just the hard construction cost for a new 80,000 square-foot junior high building would, at a minimum be in the range of $22 to $28 million dollars, plus land costs, utilities, and fees,” Nelson wrote.

“In my opinion, the current DLR Jr. High School is a reasonably sound, solid, and usable building that has many of the same issues as any school

It has been maintained fairly well over the years and is still a viable educational facility,” he said.

Obendorf said keeping DLR open would not be “kicking the can” down the road noting that past improvements such as roof repairs and new bleachers have already been completed by the district.

“You have invested in this building and it shows,” he said. “Now would be

a terrible time to close it after you’ve made all those investments.”

He said “mothballing” DLR would create problems if enrollment increased and overcrowding occurred in Oregon school buildings.

“It is costly to go back into a building after it has been mothballed,” Obendorf said, adding that his review was not intended to be “adversarial” but more “informational”.

“The committee feels that the Oregon School District is financially sound. Closing DLR due to financial

reasons is not justified,” Obendorf said. “I applaud you for what you’ve done and I thank you for being on the school board.”

Urish also thanked Mahoney for cooperating and responding promptly to requests for information and/or documents.

“While it is Tom’s recommendation which is being challenged, and he must have felt frustrated, even angry, at times, those emotions were never evident. You couldn’t have more cooperative, Tom! Thank you,” Urish said.

Urish also thanked Director of Buildings & Grounds, Bill Nesemeier, who guided the tour of DLR and members of the Advisory Committee and their contacts, “who are former teachers, administrators, CFO’s, a forensic accountant, a financial analyst, an attorney, a community developer, former Board Members, taxpayers and more” and others who gave “literally countless hours of personal time to research, question and organize the many issues which arose during our study”, and the school board for “granting us the time and opportunity to study and evaluate the recommendation”.

COVID-19 UPDATE

ttaylor@shawmedia.com All persons within Lee and Ogle Counties are being asked to wear masks indoors at public venues regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status.

The Ogle and Lee County health departments and KSB Hospital issued strongly-worded recommendations on July 31.

The heightened risk to children of contracting the coronavirus – because those under age 12 are not eligible for the vaccine – was specifically cited.

“It is our duty to protect the future generations in our community,” said a joint statement by the Lee County Health Department and KSB. “The pandemic is not over and we must continue to be vigilant in our individual behaviors and our collective behaviors as a community.”

Both health departments said the recommendations were consistent with those made by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Illinois Department of Public Health.

The health departments and the

hospital said employers, retailers, restaurants and bars, fitness and recreational centers, libraries, government entities, healthcare facilities and other public venues should require universal indoor masking of their staff and patrons.

According to the IDPH, the new case rate classifies Lee and Ogle counties as having a substantial level of transmission of the virus among the unvaccinated.

The announcement said that in addition to children under the age of 12, the virus poses a risk to people who are not vaccinated. According to IDPH data, that is more than half of Lee County’s population. A statement

from the Ogle County Health Department noted that less than 50% of the eligible population in the county is vaccinated.

The alert issued by the Lee County Health Department and the hospital did not mention the delta variant of the coronavirus.

However, the delta variant accounts for 733 of the coronavirus cases reported by the state since June 8.

According to Yale Medicine, the delta variant is a highly contagious strain of the virus. It is more transmissible than the common cold and the flu, as well as viruses that cause Ebola, smallpox, MERS and SARS. According to Yale Medicine epidemiologist F. Perry Wilson “delta will certainly accelerate the pandemic.”

Wilson warned in a release issued Friday and posted online that “hyperlocal outbreaks” are a concern with the delta variant.

A low-vaccinated town surrounded by high vaccination areas could end up with the virus contained within its borders that “allows the virus to hop, skip and jump” to other poorly vaccinated areas.

Free vaccine clinic offered in Mt. Morris on Aug. 9

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is offering a free COVID-19 vaccine clinic on Monday, Aug. 9, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 308 E. Brayton Road, Mt. Morris.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be available for persons 18 years of age and older. The Pfizer vaccine will also be available.

You must be 12 years of age and older to receive the Pfizer vaccine, which will require a second shot for full efficacy.

The IDPH will again partner with Trinity to offer the second Pfizer shot on Aug. 30, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the same location in Mt. Morris.

Attendees must register online in the IDPH clinic system to receive a vaccine.

Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville reports the following activity.

July 27 At 3:20 p.m., police responded to a disturbance at 103 Jones Terrace resulting in the arrest of Thomas A. Bradshaw, 28, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Bradshaw was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Payton G. Evenson, 16, of Rock Falls, was issued a citation at 10:30 p.m. for no valid driver’s license – graduated driver’s license (GDL) not valid after 10 p.m. A passenger in Evenson’s vehicle, Joseph C. Rivera, 41, of Rock Falls, was arrested on an outstanding Lee County warrant for failure to appear; on an outstanding Whiteside County warrant for felony criminal damage; for possession of a controlled substance, obstructing and resisting a peace officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Rivera was transported to the Ogle County Jail. Evenson was released into a guardian’s custody. These violations occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

July 28 At 11:42 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the parking lot of the Subway

restaurant, located at 511 W. Washington Street, involving a 2005 Dodge driven by Catherine Sobecki, 56, of Oregon, that struck a parked 2017 Honda owned by Clifford A. Freeman, 74, of Byron. No citations were issued.

July 29 Timothy A. Cline, 35, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 6:27 p.m. for disregarding a stop sign. This violation occurred at the intersection of 500 W. Washington and N. 6th Street.

Rock Falls motorcyclist, 66, dies after July 31 collision

A 66-year-old Rock Falls motorcyclist passed away after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Pines Road and Lowell Park Road on Saturday, July 31.

Terry E. Richards succumbed to his injuries after being airlifted to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford following the 2:30 p.m. accident, the Illi-

nois State Police said in a news release Monday morning.

Police said Katherine E. McConnell, 30, of Rock Falls, was northbound on Lowell Park Road when she failed to yield and struck Richards who was headed east on Pines Road.

McConnell was transported to KSB Hospital in

Dixon by the Polo Ambulance.

She has been charged with failure to yield, having no driver’s license, and having no insurance.

More charges may be pending, the release said.

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene.

OBITUARY CAROL JEAN (PIEFER) KOELLER Born: December 3, 1936 Died: July 30, 2021

Carol Jean (Piefer) Koeller, 84, of Forreston, went to her eternal home on Friday, July 30, 2021 while at Swedish American Hospital, Rockford, IL following

a brief illness.

Carol was born in Lafayette Township, WI on December 3, 1936, to Melvin and Gladys (Mammoser) Piefer. She married Wayne Koeller on January 28, 1956. He passed away June 21, 2014.

She graduated from Warren High School in 1954 and went on to attend Beauty School in Freeport. She was a homemaker for many years, a beautician in their home, and then worked and retired from Micro Switch. She continued to work part-time at Uniquely Yours Quilt Shop, Orangeville, IL. She was a current member of Forreston United Methodist Church, and a previous member of Faith United Methodist Church in Freeport.

She loved Christmas, having an extensive collection of Santas, and family get-togethers.

She had a long time passion for quilting and thoroughly enjoyed giving many quilted items as gifts to family and friends.

For many years, she and Wayne enjoyed

camping and spending winters in Texas.

She is survived by her five children, Cynthia Bahr of Forreston, Tamela (Kenneth) Vinnedge of Forreston, Timothy (Brenda) Koeller of Byron, Gary (Jane) Koeller of Forreston, and Sherri (Tom) Seipts of Pecatonica; 12 grandchildren, Christina (Jason) Tillery, Joshua (Jennifer) Vinnedge, Ryan Bahr, Kyle (Lindsay) Vinnedge, Cari (Ben) Modlinger, Justin Koeller, Brittany (Dane) Busker, Kelsey (Travis) Ross, Brian Koeller, Allison (Ben Parlapiano) Seipts, Erin (Adam Holland) Seipts, and Brent Koeller; 14 great-grandchildren, Abigayle (Alex Baumann), Emalee ,Victoria, Hayden, Hannah, Beckett, Reid, Delaney, Jaxon, Aubrey, Vander, Joseph, Willa and Owen; two stepgrandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren, and 1 great-

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity.

July 28 At approximately 12:26 a.m., Ogle County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 109 southbound. After investigation, deputies arrested Dayton Nielson, 23 of Fairmont, Minnesota, on an active nationwide Minnesota state arrest warrant for a parole violation. Deputies also arrested the passenger, Shawn Gaston, 31 of Peru, for possession of methamphetamines and unlawful possession of cannabis/ passenger (improper container). Nielson and Gaston were transported to the Ogle County Jail. Nielson was also cited for speeding 93 mph in a 70 mph speed zone.

At 05:35 a.m., deputies responded to a one-vehicle rollover accident in the 5000 block of S. Freeport Road. After an investigation, Deputies learned that the driver, Chad Oldham, 32, of Milledgeville was traveling southbound on Freeport Road when he lost control of his 2013 Buick LaCrosse and entered the eastbound ditch where his vehicle rolled over. Oldham

was transported to KSB hospital by Polo Ambulance for minor injuries. The accident is still under investigation.

July 29 At approximately 4:50 p.m. deputies stopped a vehicle on Illinois 2 north of Oregon for a traffic violation. Pursuant to the stop, Joseph Lones, 34, of Loves Park was arrested for no valid driver’s license and not wearing a seat belt. Lones was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., deputies stopped a vehicle on Illinois 2 north of Oregon for speeding. Pursuant to the stop, Barbara A Smith, 32, of Rockford was cited for unlawful possession of cannabis as a driver and speeding. A passenger in the vehicle, Joshua D Smith, 35, of Rockford was cited for unlawful possession of cannabis as a passenger. Both individuals were released from the scene on an I-bond with a court appearance at a later date.

July 30 Daliyah Jones, 19, of Rockford was arrested for driving without a license following a traffic stop on Illinois 64 near Woodlawn Road for speeding. Jones was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

July 31 At 1:10 p.m., deputies were dispatched to Lanark Road and Illinois 26 for a male subject that was in the roadway sleeping and possibly intoxicated in his vehicle.

After further investigation, Michael Frey, 56, of Polo, was arrested for driving while license revoked, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and illegal transportation of alcohol. It was later learned that Frey was also involved in a property damage accident at Springdale Road and Illinois 26. He was also cited for leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Frey was additionally charged with felony aggravated driving while under the influence. Frey was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Aug. 2 Melissa Burns, 39 of Polo, was arrested at 9:46 p.m. for driving while license revoked following a traffic stop in the 600 block of East Washington St. in Oregon.

Burns was also cited for loud exhaust and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Burns was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Illinois State Police District 1 Commander, Captain Matthew Hodgdon, has announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for July.

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 291 citations, 498 written warnings, and made 10 criminal arrests during the month of July.

Speeding accounted for 138 citations, 18 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 25 citations were issued for distracted driving violations.

There were 23 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/ revoked.
