15-year-old Sterling boy with loaded gun arrested at Petunia Festival

A 15-year-old Sterling boy was arrested Sunday night with a loaded handgun after police received “a credible threat of an ‘active shooter’ on the Peoria Avenue Bridge during the fireworks,” they said in a news release early Monday morning.

The information was received around 9 p.m. from a group of juveniles who said the boy “flashed” the revolver, Lt. Brad Sibley said.

They gave a description of the teen, who was found a short time later.

In the chaos of the initial investigation, there was some talk that there might be other armed subjects, Sibley said.

Police cleared the bridge of all spectators “out of an abundance of caution,“ the release said.

“We decided if we clear the bridge, they’re going to know that we know, so maybe that will deter them from doing anything,” Sibley said.

In the end, though, no other suspects were found, and police believe the boy was the only one involved, Sibley said.

By law, he must have a hearing within 48 hours, and because July 5 was a holiday, Monday did not count.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Department and the Illinois State Police were called in to assist.

BUSINESS NEWS Alexa Zoellner joins newspaper staff

Alexa Zoellner has joined the staff of Ogle County Newspapers, a division of Shaw Media.

Zoellner, 30, is a native of Cary, Illinois, but is looking forward to learning more about Ogle County and its residents as she becomes one of them.

She is familiar with the Rock River, which runs through Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, where she previously worked at the Daily Jefferson County Union as a staff reporter. Her bylines also can be found in the Traverse City Record-Eagle, based in Traverse City, Michigan.

One of her Daily Union articles, “Good Samaritan risks high waters to save drowning goat”, won an honorable mention in Division B in the 2018

Wisconsin Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest. The story was about a goat that fell off a small island in the Rock River and had to be rescued.

The accompanying video Zoellner shot of the rescue Alexa Zoellner has, to date, garnered more than 19,000 views on the Daily Union’s Facebook page.

Zoellner also won first place for investigative reporting, Division C, in the 2016 WNA Better Newspaper Contest for her series, “Heroin: Consuming Resources.” The series examined how the heroin epidemic was impacting the budgets

and resources of some of Jefferson County’s largest departments.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Western Illinois University, graduating at the top of her class and with honors. Zoellner has minors in photographic media and engineering technology.

“We welcome Alexa to our Shaw Media team and look forward to her enthusiasm and coverage-style for all of our publications,” said General Manager Earleen Hinton.

Zoellner replaces Jeff Helfrich who took a position in May with the Rochelle News Leader.

This year was the best show yet, he said.

It’s a comment Let Freedom Ring Committee Chairperson Tiffany West said she’s been hearing a lot.

They hired a new company this year — Spectrum Pyrotechnics — and was told that, next year, there will be “more time to put on a better show,” West said.

“So I’m looking forward to next year’s already,” she said.

More than 800 people attended the festival’s kickoff on July 2, West said, noting that the great weather helped.

The 2020 and 2021 kings and queens were crowned June 30. Kelsi Morris and Brady Schwartz took the 2020 crowns and Katelyn Bowers and Emmett Peterson claimed the 2021 royalty rights. Bostyn Millard was chosen Little Miss.

Work starts on parks concession stand, restrooms

azoellner@shawmedia.com Construction is underway on a new concession stand and restroom facility at Polo Community Park.

It’s an amenity park-goers have missed, said Elizabeth Grogan, Polo pool manager. The structure will serve not only pool-goers, but other park visitors, such as those attending softball and baseball games, she said.

“They (the public) are really excited to see that it’s getting built,” Grogan said. “I know I got a lot of questions in the beginning of the (pool) season asking when it was going to be built.”

The hope is that the new concession stand and restrooms will be open and functioning by early August, Polo Park Board President Larry Loomis said. Construction began two weeks ago, with Busser Builders, of Polo, at the helm, he said.

The old structure — which housed the park’s concession stand and bathroom — was removed in March 2020 after a 2019 Ogle County Health Department inspection found it did not meet health and safety standards, Loomis said.

Among the improvements called for are commercial refrigeration and preparation equipment, diaper-changing stations, electric hand dryers and soap dispensers.

Estimates for the total project cost initially were between $30,000 and $35,000. When Busser Builders

took over, the planned structure was reduced in size by about one-third, thereby cutting some costs, Loomis said.

“We can save money (by building a smaller structure), and that’ll get us closer to what we have donated, but we’re not going to have enough,” Loomis said. He added that the new concession stand and bathrooms will still be larger than the old building.

By March 16, 2020, more than $22,800 was raised for the project, according to Polo City Council meeting minutes.

As of Friday, Loomis cited total donations at “slightly over $20,000” with a $1,000 donation having come in recently.

“People, they care about their community. They come forth with the donations,” Loomis said. “That’s what makes our community a nice place to live your life.”

Polo’s pool opened in 1968 and is one of few remaining outdoor public swimming pools in northern Illinois. It is the only one in Ogle County.

In 2019, the pool alone served 11,071 patrons, Loomis said. He wasn’t sure exactly how many people used the nearby shelter houses, but estimated an additional 3,000- to 4,000 people.

The royalty choice float winner was Jordan Creek Farms with their decorated horses, ponies, and riders, while

the most patriotic entry went to Blackhawk Crossing 4-H Club. The best overall parade entry was Trinity Lutheran Church’s float.

“I thought the festival went really well,” Labash said. “It seemed like there was a crowd uptown (the whole time). And I appreciate the efforts in pulling all this together — especially with COVID, it was somewhat of a shortened timeline.”

Early on, committee members tried to plan for this year’s festival. “If we’re able to do it, we’re going to go ahead and try to do as much as we can,” West said.

As guidelines and regulations were put in place, organizers were able to plan a bit more, though the inability to do as many fundraisers during the preceding year did have some impact, West said.

“We have big plans to continue our fundraising, because we definitely liked our fireworks this year,” West said.

One part of the plan? Raffling off rights to “lighting” the first firework of 2022. That said, there’s no actual matches involved.

“They have a switchboard, so all you have to do is flip the switch,” West said.

Grogan said she will be the one running the concession stand. Two high school girls originally were hired to work the stand, she said. But, because construction timing was uncertain, Grogan instead had them get certified as lifeguards.

“I have a lot of experience in managing food and stuff like that,” said Grogan, who ran a kitchen at Stronghold Camp Retreat Center in Oregon for three years. “This is definitely not like a camp where I fed over 50 campers every day.”

Similar updates also are needed at Millard Deuth Westside Park’s concession stand and restroom, Loomis said. That project also is expected to cost around $30,000 to $35,000.

“That’s still up in the air,” Loomis said. “We’re going to have to do something.”

Originally, the changes were required to be completed by 2021, but the city was able to get a variance to operate it this year, he said. The main problem there is the restroom, which requires a diaper-changing station and doors to open certain ways so as to be handicap accessible, among other things, Loomis explained.

“That may not sound like much, but it requires structural changes,” he said. “We’re going to have to add on (to the building).”

Interim police chief appointed

Polo Police Chief Tim Rockwood’s resignation was accepted by city council members Tuesday evening.

Rockwood stepped down for “personal reasons,” Mayor Doug Knapp said after Tuesday’s council meeting.

“We let him (Rockwood) on as police chief when he had only two years of time, so it was kind of asking a lot of him,” he said.

Sgt. Troy Randall was appointed as interim police chief, Knapp said.

“I can tell you that Officer Rockwood will be deeply missed,” Randall said Wednesday morning. “I’ve worked with him for the past three- or four years now. He’s done a lot of service.”

Randall said he has served as a police officer in various capacities since 1998, including as chief in Shannon and Hanover. He has been with the Polo Police Department for seven years, and is looking to make the move to chief “a permanent change,” he said.

According to the minutes of a June 28 Special City Council meeting, Rockwood expressed interest in working in the city’s Parks Department.

about making a position for Tim Rockwood for him to stay with the City of Polo. They do not feel it is fair to push other employees out to create a position to keep Tim Rockwood,” the minutes read.

That stance remained solid on Tuesday, Knapp said.

“We are basically not wanting to open a position that would take jobs of others,” he said.

“That’s our stance on that.”

Randall will be paid $29 an hour as interim police chief, according to the June 28 minutes.

Rockwood was unable to be reached for comment before deadline.

In other action, Polo Water and Sewer Department employee Brenden Kane’s resignation also was accepted.

“We thanked him for his time,” Knapp said.

“He just got a job offer he couldn’t refuse.”

Justin Grobe, who currently serves as Ward 1 alderperson, has been approved to replace Kane, said Knapp.

Grobe, in the June 28 meeting, said he wants to step down as alderperson at the end of July and start working for the city Aug. 2.

Nash served in the Civil War; designed a cultivator Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society.

The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Chester, son of Jeremiah and Olive Nash, was born in 1841 at Westerville, New York. This was five years after Oregon was founded.

He came to Illinois in 1850 with his parents when he was 20 years old. The Jeremiah Nash family settled in Scott Township.

Two years after Chester arrived in Ogle County he enlisted in the Civil War and continued until the conclusion of the conflict. His regiment was Company A., Twelfth Illinois Calvary.

While on a mission as a dispatch bearer he was captured and confined for five months in the rebel prison camp at Belle Isle.

On Jan. 30, 1867 he married Lodoiska Hulburd at the place of her residence in Winnebago County. Chester built their home at 111 N. 6th Street in Oregon in 1878.

They had one daughter Ruby and an adopted son Raymond.

The Nash Manufacturing Co. was located on the corner of 2nd and Franklin Streets across the street south of Conover Square. This is now a utility facility.

This factory building owned by Chester Nash was built to manufacture the Nash Cultivator.

Chester Nash, a farmer living on a farm near Davis Junction, worked on an improved field cultivator for which he secured a patent.

We have his cultivator model and patent at the Ogle County Historical Society museum in Oregon. After manufacturing the Nash Cultivator for a short time in Davis Junction he investigated establishing a factory at Rockford or Oregon. In 1882 he chose Oregon and built the Nash Factory in Oregon.

The following is from a newspaper article dated Feb. 21, 1883, Volume XXVII of the Oregon Independent, founded in 1856.

Invented At Davis Junction: “The Nash cultivator was invented by Chester Nash in 1882. The model of the cultivator was made by hand and submitted to the Government Patent Office. The cultivator consisted of 18 pieces of wood, 14 of wrought iron, 32 of cast iron and weighed 300 pounds. One hundred were made by hand in Davis Junction. Water power was turned on in his new factory at Oregon Jan. 12, 1883.”

There were several cables supplying power to various factories in the vicinity of the dam including the piano factory.

Nash manufactured cultivators at the Oregon location for approximate 10 years.

He then operated a machine shop until 1898. He sold the building to Adam Buttell and Sons for the manufacture of pianos.

Chester could make almost any kind of repair needed on his machinery. He built the form for the standards of the two Civil War Cannons which stand in front of the Ogle County Court House.

Now when I see those cannons I remember Chester built the forms for their supports and he served in the Civil War for five years and was a prisoner of war for five months.

Funds sought to spay, neuter felines as part of catch-and-release program

azoellner@shawmedia.com Friends Melinda Cox and Dr. Emily Schier once again are setting out to help decrease the feral cat population in the village of Mt. Morris.

Their plan is not to relocate the cats, but to trap, sterilize and vaccinate the felines before releasing them in the area where they were picked up. It’s a process commonly called trap-neuter-return, or trap-neuter-vaccinate-return — TNR or TNVR for short.

“Cats, they’ve got a colony … (and) they prefer not to let another cat in until one leaves,” said Cox, a Mt. Morris resident. “That’s why it’s a catchand-release. We want to keep them in their colonies so other ones don’t come (into the vacated area).”

Cox estimated there currently are,

at the least, 50 or 60 feral cats in Mt. Morris.

She and Schier, a veterinarian, utilized this program about three years ago, Cox said. They put roughly 70 cats through the program at a cost of about $100 per female and $85 per male.

Schier spays or neuters the cats, eartip’s them — surgically removing the tip of their ear to indicate at a distance that they’ve been TNR’d — vaccinates for rabies and treats any other ailments they’re suffering from, Cox said. She added that Schier charges the village only for product-used, as both women donate their time.

Because the goal is to control breeding, it’s a program that takes a while to really catch, Village President Phil Labash said.

He doesn’t feel the village has a “widespread” feral cat problem.

However, there are “pockets” with higher populations, and it is something officials get complaints about, he said.

“It’s not a cat problem, it’s a people problem,” Labash said. “When people feed them, they’re creating this concentration of feral cats.

Shingles battle continues, but did not stop reunion

H

aving shingles is the worst I have felt my entire life. As I hear stories from other people, I am beginning to believe that this is not going to be over with for some time.

My rib cage is on fire and my back hurts all the time. I find myself unable to sit very long at the computer. At least I can now go to bed and sleep at night so I am thankful for that much. I do thank people for all the get well cards.

My favorite spot is in my recliner with the little bag full of peas that I heat up in the microwave. Barb Woodin gave that to us a number of years ago and I do not let it out of my sight. I cannot stand to be cold so I am usually bungled up like it is winter. I love the hot sunny days.

Last week I did get down to Cape Girardeau, Missouri for the Isley Reunion. There were 65 coming and I was determined to go. Early Thursday morning on July 24 Steve, Cheri, and Lori picked me up and away we went in their new van. I rode well for the six hours it took us to get there.

We checked in at the new Drury Hotel and Conference Center where our 14th Isley Reunion would be held. Our initial gathering had been in the summer of 1980 at my Uncle Bill and Aunt Maxine Isley Zickfield’s home in Cape Girardeau. Some of my grandchildren were just babies then and we filled

We all stayed in little cabins and when we left Kenneth and I crossed the Illinois River on a ferry. The Mississippi River was close by but I think it was the Illinois River that had the ferry. We were headed to St. Charles to my brother, Ed’s home.

Then we had five reunions in Effingham, Illinois at a Holiday Inn. We enjoyed traveling up to Newton to the farm where my grandparents had lived and where I had spent many summers as a child helping my grandmother in her garden and flower beds.

Then we had seven reunions in Springfield at Northfield Inn. My sister had lined that spot up before they had finished building the inn. We always

enjoyed gathering at a fish place on Friday night for those of us who came early. We had many things available to us in Springfield.

This time we headed back to Cape Girardeau where I have many cousins and their families living.

After we checked in at the hotel we headed downtown to Zickfield’s Jewelry Store to see my cousin Kent and his family.

Then on to the Heritage Center and Museum to chat with a friend. We went to dinner with Frank at Port Cape Girardeau just around the corner and down the hill. We could see the Mississippi River from this delightful spot to eat.

The next day the Obendorf group went to Sedgewickville, Missouri to see the churches where my grandfather had been a preacher. These are the same Lutheran Churches that Bill Brooks from Polo later had. This was about 30 miles west of Cape.

We also visited the three family farms where my cousins now live. Growing up I spent many times visiting these same places. As we left, Cousin Sylvia gave all of us a jar of her homemade jam. I picked blackberry.

This reminded me of picking blackberries for my grandmother. She then would put them into a blackberry cobbler which was delicious with cold milk!

Wonderful memories of the past.

“From my perspective, I’m thankful we’ve got someone who’s willing to step up and be part of the solution and donate time and efforts to controlling that population,” he continued. “It’s a benefit to the community.”

Last year, the city of Polo passed an ordinance that included fines for people feeding cats outdoors and limited

the number of animals that can be “owned” to four. It also changed the definition of the word “owner” to mean that, if a person “feeds or harbors” a cat, they are the owner.

A cat that lives outside year-round has a typical lifespan of seven- to 10 years and can produce around 100 kittens in that time, Cox said.

That statistic was put forth by Carl Bailik — the Wall Street Journal’s “Numbers Guy” — in an Oct. 12, 2006, column.

“You can’t catch every cat in town

— that’s impossible,” Cox said. “But every one you catch can deplete the amount.”

Labash agreed.

“That’s why the program is so important,” he said. “Because if you don’t control it (the feral cat population) early, it can really explode. Then it’s not pockets, it’s across the whole community.”

On June 22, Cox went before Mt. Morris village trustees to request funding for the medical portion of the program.

Labash said trustees approved spending up to $1,000 on the program.

It’s on an as-needed basis, and they may not spend all of it, he said.

People are able to donate toward the program by visiting Mt. Morris Village Hall at 105 W. Lincoln St., Mt. Morris, IL 61054.

“We didn’t want to take the money and have people think we’re doing other things with it,” Cox said of collecting donations. “If we can get the funds for it, we can do as many cats as possible.”

ehinton@oglecountynews.com A trip to a swamp in Mississippi was the inspiration for one of the 53 entries in the Fourth Annual Grand Detour Golf Cart Parade on July 3.

“We were down in Mississippi and we took a swamp tour so we thought we’d show people here in Grand Detour what that looked like,” said Finn Sommers, one of Tom and Steffaney Welty’s grandchildren.

Finn, 10, and his siblings Ryder, 8, and Isla, 5, of Crystal Lake, were given the option of deciding how to decorate the Welty’s golf cart.

“They were on the swamp tour and they saw a pig and some alligators,” said Tom. “We told the kids they could decide how to decorate it and Ryder said ‘we can make a swamp cart’, ” said Steffaney. “The decorating was a group effort. It took us about an hour.”

Decorating details included stuffed swamp creatures, a couple of dinosaurs, Safari wear for Ryder, and a lot of swampy flora.

The Byron Forest Preserve District will offer the 8th Annual Archaeology Artifacts ID Day on Saturday, July 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Nature Preserve’s North Shelter, 7993 North River Road, Byron.

Professional archaeologists from Illinois and Wisconsin will be at the event to answer questions about arrow heads, spear points, prehistoric tools, pottery shards, fossils or other items.

“If you don’t have any items of your own to identify, be sure to stop in any way to see what other have brought,” said Mark Herman, superintendent of education. “The Rock River Valley supported a huge Native American population for nearly 13,000 years before European settlement and an abundance of stone tools and artifacts are

still being uncovered. Learn more about prehistoric tools and weapons dating from thousands of years ago through hands-on demonstrations at this interactive event.”

Illinois 64 in western Ogle County resurfacing to begin

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that resurfacing will begin this week on Illinois 64 in Ogle County from U.S. 52 to Route 26.

Flaggers will direct traffic and drivers should be prepared to stop when directed.

Access to residences and businesses within the work zone will be maintained throughout construction.

The $1,497,762 project is expected to be completed by Aug. 8.

Its main decorated competitor appeared to be Mark and Linda Downey’s “Sweet Land of Liberty” cart that was fitted in a sea of red, white and blue streamers along with a couple of matching inflatable popsicle floats.

That decorating scheme took some time, Linda said. “It took us awhile,

but it was fun to do.”

Another entry had two other very curious “kids” along for the ride.

Jacklyn Heller rode in the back of an ATV with her two Nigerian dwarf goats, Deliah and Zion, as her grandmother, Karen Heller, drove.

The 6-month old kids curiously eyed other entries that had dogs, a parrot, and even a duck.

“This is just a fun event,” said Karen.

Jacklyn’s brother, Levi, was the chauffeur for 92-year-old Beulah Schumacher, a longtime Grand Detour resident who was making her first

appearance in the parade.

“I’ve watched it before, but this is the first time I’ve been part of it,” said Schumacher. “There are a lot of people here.”

The line of vehicles were staged in the parking lot of the John Deere Historic Site where Jim Ross, parade organizer, walked by the entries sporting red, white and blue pants, and an Uncle Sam hat before the 8 p.m. starting time. This year’s parade marshals were Roger and Joan Kelly, who owned the Ace Hardware Store in Dixon. Their cart was driven by their son, Rich, with his dad in the passen-

ger seat and mom on the back seat.

Last year’s event was held despite the COVID-19 pandemic with one of the entries being Kate Johnson and Joe Roth’s “In Sickness and in Health..A Covid Style Wedding”.

Their entry included Johnson in a summer cut wedding gown complete with Nike tennis shoes and Roth sporting groom-to-be into tuxedo shorts with a wedding cake with five rolls of toilet paper.

Connie Ross, Jim’s wife, said the Roth and Johnson are slated to be married next month. “She had her bridal shower today,” said Connie.

Encore! Artist Showcase remains open through July Encore! Mt. Morris opened its Regional Artist Showcase on July 2 in the Old Sandstone Gallery, 122 S. Wesley Ave., Mt. Morris.

Featured artists were in attendance to meet local visitors to the exhibit.

They included Sharon Asp, Mt. Morris (mixed media); Beth Kalbfus, Oregon (miniatures); Bog Logsdon, Dixon (photography); Ellen Mumford, Dixon (watercolor and acrylic painting); David Sweeney, Lanark (oil and watercolor painting, pastels); Sandy Weiland, Geneva (colored pencil); and Lucinda Winterfield, Lost Nation (acrylic painting).

The show will remain throughout July. Gallery hours are: Wednesday, 7-9 p.m., and Friday, 6:30-9 p.m., during concerts on the neighboring campus band shell (free admission).

Encore also has announced the call for entries for their third gallery show of the 2021 season, “Radical Botanicals.”

This juried show invites original art of all kinds, with a “Radical Botanicals” theme.

Artists may submit one- to three images of their original works for consideration. Artists must be 18 years old or older.

Only those images received by the July 10 deadline will be considered.

Reckmeyer siblings part of July 14 band performance The Mt. Morris Kable Concert Band continues it’s 125th consecutive season of Wednesday night concerts.

Concerts continue every Wednesday night through Aug. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Warren G. Reckmeyer Band Shell on the Campus Square.

The featured Kable Band soloist on July 14, is Mathew Reckmeyer, MD, of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Reckmeyer is a Mt. Morris High School graduate and the son of Carol and the late Warren Reckmeyer. He is an orthopedic surgeon in Lincoln.

“On Wednesday, July 14, he will be entertaining us with solo trombone,” said Sylvia Saunders, volunteer and band member.

Sarah Reckmeyer of Ottawa, will be conducting the band on July 14. Sarah is Matthew’s sister and is also a Mt. Morris High School graduate.

“Sarah is retired and was a music educator and high school band director at Ottawa High School for 29 years,” said Saunders. “You won’t want to miss this special concert in the in Mt. Morris. An ice cream socials preceded the concert.

A 36-year-old Hanover man will be 81 years old before he his released from state prison after pleading guilty last week to beating his girlfriend’s husband to death with his bare fists.

Keith Heidenreich, 46, of Freeport, died in the Hanover home that Levi “TJ” Meyers shared with Heidenreich’s wife, Danielle K. HeidKeith Heidenreich enreich, 39, sometime between March 9 and 10, investigators said.

The pair then took his body to Miller’s Boat Landing, 6898 Marina Road, about 4 miles north of Savanna off state Route 84, and dumped it in the Mississippi River; it was found March 10.

Meyers was sentenced in Jo Daviess County court to 45 years for first-degree murder; four counts of first-degree murder, concealment of a homi-

Meyers must serve the entirety of the sentence, with no time off.

The sheriff’s office joined forces with more than 200 other local law enforcement agencies from June 17 through July 5 to get drunk and drugged drivers off our roads and

encourage seat belt use.

The effort featured high-visibility enforcement combined with a variety of outreach activities, including a media campaign.

The enforcement period was funded by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation as part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” programs.

JEANETTE MAE HAENITSCH

ASHTON - Jeanette Mae Haenitsch passed away Saturday, June 26, 2021.

Jeanette was born on Sept. 11, 1963 to Wesley and Jean Coan in Rochelle Hospital in Rochelle.

On July 24, 1982, she married Ryan Haenitsch in Ashton at the Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 2009.

Jeanette is survived by her parents; two brothers, Wesley (Chris) of Flovilla, Georgia and William (Patricia) of Rockford; stepson, Jeremy (Laura) Haenitsch of Polo; and grandson, Austin Haenitsch of Chana.

Ray Patterson was her best friend and lived with her until the end.

A celebration of life will be at a later date.

Cremation has been provided by Affordable Cremation & Funeral Service. Private family burial will be at a later date in Ashton Cemetery.
