Free summer lunches for ages 1 to 18

All youth ages one to 18 years in the greater Mt. Morris area are eligible for free boxed lunches every weekday this summer.

There are two distributions sites in Mt. Morris: Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 308 E. Brayton Road, and Kids Club/Lot 12 at Hauck Home Mobile Park.

Both organizations are partnering with the Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB), which will provide the meals. Due to COVID concerns, they will be “grab and go” boxed meals.

Trinity will distribute the free meals Monday through Friday, 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., until school starts in the fall. You don’t need to pre-register or give your name.

Volunteers will hand out boxed breakfasts and lunches to anyone who walks, drives or bikes up Trinity’s circle driveway on Ogle Street.

Monthly menus will be posted outside the church, on Trinity’s website at www.

trinitymmil.net and their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/tlcmm. This is the eighth year that Trinity has partnered with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to offer the Summer Lunch Program.

Kids Club/Lot 12 will distribute the same meals Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m., through Aug. 12.

They are asking people to sign up for meals in order to estimate the number needed each day.

Lot 12 Summer Kids and Mentoring Program became a supplemental food program in 2020 due to the pandemic. This year they will once again offer reading, craft and outdoor activities, but are partnering with the Northern Illinois Food Bank to offer free meals.

Lot 12 Summer Kids and Mentoring Program was developed in 2009 to help children in theHauck Home Mobile Park retain knowledge and skills learned in school

during the summer break.

It has grown into a year-round program of activities and support that serves all young people and families in the park.

Although coordinated by the Disciples United Methodist Church, it is not religion-based and welcomes all volunteers, children and families to the Kids Club/Lot 12 clan.

For more information please drop by the Lot 12 mobile home when open, or drop a note in their mail box.

Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church is celebrating its 175 th anniversary in 2021.

Their mission, “Believing in Christ, we are called to grow and sent to serve,” is lived through local and global service projects that run the gamut from creating health kits and quilts for world relief programs to providing free pajamas to area families at Christmas.

Iron Mike getting closer to his new digs

ehinton@shawmedia.com Visitors to downtown Oregon will soon be able to stop for a sip as the finishing touches are being made on the new digs for Iron Mike — the city’s historic water fountain.

Randy Travis, owner of Travis Landscaping in Oregon, was busy Monday prepping the ground for the installation of antique Purington pavers that will surround the fountain.

On Tuesday, city workers, along with Mayor Ken Williams, unloaded the 9-pound pavers, and Travis and his employee, Matt Lauer, got to work.

“Randy started on the paving brick installation this morning. He should be done by week’s end. At that point I will coordinate with Dale Beesing to install Iron Mike and the memorial benches,” Mike Bowers, project manager for the relocation project said in an email Tuesday.

Bowers, the former Superintendent of Streets for the City of Oregon, was instrumental in saving the Purington pavers when they were removed from the 200 block of N. Third Street, west of Conover Square, and replaced with pavement.

Once the world’s largest brick manufacturer, Purington Pavers Brick Company supplied pavers across the United States and around the world for more than 50 years. Production ceased in the late 1940s when demand for the pavers waned as asphalt and concrete become more commonplace for streets.

“I want to thank everyone who came out and helped this morning in the heat to help unload the pavers,” said Williams. “We do not have a date yet on when everything will be ready. Once we do we will have a reopening date for Iron Mike.”

City and county officials decided to move the 1901 free-flowing fountain after a wayward car almost hit it a few years ago.

It is being moved a few yards south of its former location (at the intersection of Illinois 64 and Illinois 2) to the northeast corner of Ogle County Courthouse Square.

The fountain was cleaned, sandblasted and repainted by the E.D. Etnyre Co., at its Oregon facility. Then Iron Mike was stored by the street department over the winter after COVID-19 delayed the project.

The re-installation project began in downtown Oregon last fall when Martin & Co. excavated the new spot inside the sidewalk.

Iron Mike has three drinking levels, one for dogs, one for horses and one for people and was endorsed by the Illinois Humane Society when it was forged.

OGLE COUNTY

A Mt. Morris man was arrested on multiple charges Monday after he attempted to flee from police, drove out of town, and climbed a tree to try and avoid capture.

Johnathan P. Parker, 37, of Mt Morris, was charged with aggravated fleeing to elude, unlawful possession of methamphetamine, and on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for mob action.

The incident started at approximately 8:15 p.m. when Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputies attempted to stop Parker’s car on Ridge Road, west of Oregon, for speeding.

“An exhaustive area search was conducted using the Sheriff’s Office K9 as well as a drone and the suspect was located hiding approximately 30 feet off the ground in a tree,” a sheriff’s department press release said. “Oregon Fire and Ambulance were requested to the scene to help with rescuing the suspect out of the tree.”

Parker was arrested after safely climbing down from the tree.

He was also the suspect in a prior investigation

and was subsequently charged with burglary and burglary from a motor vehicle.

Two passengers in Parker’s car, Angela M. Baker, 35, of Dixon and Sierra N. Piester, 27, of Prophetstown, were also charged with unlawful possession of methamphetamine.

Baker additionally had an outstanding warrant out of Lee County for possession of dangerous drugs.

All three individuals were confined at the Ogle County Jail in lieu of bond, awaiting a court appearance.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Oregon and Mt. Morris Police departments.

Rotary saw likely cause of fire at old printing plant

ehinton@shawmedia.com A spark from a rotary saw is likely the cause of a fire at the former Quad Graphics Printing and Kable Printing plant, the fire chief said.

Firefighters received a report of large amounts of black smoke coming from the roof of 404 S. Wesley Ave. around 4:31 p.m. Thursday, June 3 and found heavy smoke coming from the roof and several doorways on the southeast corner of the building, Chief Rob Hough said in a news release.

The workers were evacuated and no one was injured. The fire was under control by 5:37 p.m. and firefighters cleared the scene at 7:37 p.m.

“The structure is undergoing renovation and the loss was minimal,” Hough said. “The most probable area of origin was Roto Press Room 5. The most probable cause was workers using rotary saws to remove printing ink piping caused a spark and ignited residual ink in the piping.”

Byron, Oregon and Polo firefighters assisted at the scene.

LeRoy Toms of Polo will celebrate his 97th birthday June 19, 2021.

LeRoy will be celebrating with his wife, Marian and family with a picnic dinner.

His family includes Irvin (Joyce) Toms of Mt. Morris, Anita (Bill) Wetzbarger of Rockford and Marty (Kathy) Toms of Polo.

He has six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Ebenezer Reformed Church will hold blood drive Ebenezer Reformed Church is hosting a blood drive from 2 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15, at 2997 North German Church Road.

The demand for blood is great and the supply is low. The Rock River Valley Blood Center serves 10 regional hospitals in Illinois, including Rochelle Community Hospital, and southern Wisconsin. They are the only provider of blood products and services to these facilities and need to see 700 donors per week.

Kable Band to celebrate 125th season this summer; first concert is June 16 Kable Concert Band of Mt. Morris will being its 125th season next week.

Summer concerts will be held Wednesday evenings, at 7:30 p.m., June 16 through Aug. 4, at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

“Come early, enjoy an ice cream social preceding the concert,” said volunteer Sylvia Saunders.

In celebration of the 125th anniversary of the band, old favorites as well as newer contemporary favorites, will be performed under the baton of Director Andy Eckardt. Guest performers are also featured.

Noise, smoke and fun all part of FFA’s Tractor Pull

ehinton@shawmedia.com Lots of sun, temperatures in the 90s, and big, powerful modified tractors took center stage Saturday at the Forreston FFA Alumni’s Annual Tractor Pull in Leaf River.

The popular event was part of a scaled-down Leaf River Summer Daze that marked the town’s first major public event since the COVID-19 pandemic forced cancellations throughout the nation in 2020.

And it was free.

“We had free admission this year to try and get our community back together,” said organizer Josh Bolen, a German Valley resident and Forreston FFA Alumni Vice President. “I think this year’s turnout was good.”

Visitors were asked to make a free will donation at each gate that led to the pulling track. During the day, the event included classes for antique tractors, farm tractors, and trucks, with the Badger State Pullers finishing up in the evening.

Bolen estimated that around 100 tractors took part in this year’s event.

“We had around 100 hooks,” he said, referring to the process in which a truck or tractor is hooked to a weighted sled. “It was a little off this year, but it was our first year back since Covid.”

Funds raised will go toward supporting Forreston High School Ag Education and FFA Chapter.

Nick Cunningham of Leaf River brought his 1968 John Deere “Industrial Strength” 5010 to compete.

“I’ve been pulling since 2006,” said Cunningham who farms with his uncle.

“I do pulling on the side.”

Cunningham’s tractor is yellow, not the traditional John Deere green.

“When John Deere made their industrial tractors in 1968 they made them in yellow. We decided to have this one in yellow to celebrate that tradition,” Cunningham said.

Business was also brisk for food vendors with the Leaf River Busy Beavers 4-H Club selling out of ice cream at 7 p.m., just before the Badger State Pullers started.

“We sold 600 cups of ice cream,” said Melinda Charbonneau, club leader.

“We could of sold more, but you never know.”

The Ogle County Pork Producers grilled 500 chops for the Leaf River United Methodist Church’s booth.

Those also sold out.

Bolen said the event would not be possible without sponsors.

Leaf River Fire and EMS, who was on site for the event, was called into action shortly after 7 p.m. when a vehicle struck three parked vehicles along Leaf River Road and overturned onto its side, by the Bertolet Library, just

west of the tractor pull track.

The driver exited the vehicle and was treated by the Leaf River Ambulance. Two of the three parked vehicles had extensive damage.

Ogle County Sheriff deputies also responded to the accident.

JFK Memorial dedicated July 4, 1966, in Oregon

A

memorial to John F. Kennedy stands on the Ogle County Courthouse lawn, a few yards from Taft’s Soldiers’ Memorial.

This JFK Memorial was dedicated July 4, 1966, and read “Dedicated by citizens of Ogle County who Admired our beloved Deceased President. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 1917-1963.”

The Nov. 28, 1964, Republican Reporter Newspaper headline read, “Oregon Shocked by Death of President John F. Kennedy.”

“The anguish and heart-felt sympathy that was experienced during this crisis has not been seen since the entry of this country into World War II,” the story said.

At the Oregon Post Office our flag was flown at half-mast as a tribute to our dead President. The flag was flown at half-mast for 30 days during the period of mourning.

Instructions were given about flying the U.S. flag at half-mast. When the flag is raised it should be elevated to the top of the pole and then lowered to the half-mast position.

“When taking it down, the flag should be elevated to the top and then lowered all the way down. Flags may be left up at night; however they must be illuminated after dark. The flag should never be left up after dark at any time other than when it is flown at half-mast for mourning.”

John Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated on Friday, Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas while riding in a presidential motorcade. Kennedy and Texas Governor John Connally, who was also shot, were rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital where Kennedy was pronounced dead about 30 minutes after the shooting. Connally recovered.

On Sunday, Nov. 24, Kennedy’s coffin was carried by a horse-drawn carriage to the U.S. Capitol.

Throughout the day and night thousands of people lined up to view the casket. The funeral was attended by representatives from 90 countries. The funeral was held Monday, Nov. 25, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery, near Washington, D.C., in Virginia.

Kennedy was the fourth President to be assassinated while holding office. The others were Abraham Lincoln in 1865, James A. Garfield in 1881, and William McKinley in 1891. There have also been several other attempted assassinations through the years.

The Rockford Morning Star ran an article titled “Black Friday,” which read in part: “We mourn the death of President Kennedy just as do all decent Americans. His senseless slaughter was a despicable act. We pray that President Johnson, in the days ahead, can restore the sense of national honor that was so grievously besmirched at Dallas on Friday, Nov. 22, 1963,” the article said.

Now when I observe the Kennedy Memorial I will recall our 35th president was the fourth assassinated U. S. President.

There is no place for those who encourage or participate in violence. The recent attack on our Capitol Building was a huge attack on our democracy and those who encouraged it should be held accountable.

Members of both parties should lead the movement against this attack.

everal weeks ago I started writing on early education in our area. Using the book “Little Markers,” I looked at early education in Ogle County. This book was written in 1990 and it showed where all the Ogle County one room schools had been and the development of those schools.

All of these country school sites were connected with townships and these townships had been developed in 1850. Originally there had been 20 townships but between 1859 and1880 many changes were made Distances between schools varied and as a result the distance a child had to walk could be different. Most students had to walk between one or two miles.

Sometimes they were allowed short cuts over property but they had to go single file so as to not pack down soil or hurt crops. There might still be a few left who can remember walking to school swinging a half gallon syrup lunch pail. There were approximately 170 country schools with most of them now gone.

The salaries for those teaching in one-room schools were low around $25 a month. Ten years later they were $35 a month so raises were far and few between in that ten year span. The majority of country school teachers did their best and some of the teachers were barely older that some of the students.

Polo Historical Society They might be in churches, homes, and downtown buildings. Polo had all of that with the Presbyterian Church, homes, and a building downtown being used for education.

In 1834 the first school was established in Buffalo Grove which was early Polo. The building was a frame building and also used as a church. Among the early teachers was John Burroughs, noted naturalist, and Dr. Sarah Hackett Stevenson who became a physician and the first female member of the American Medical Association. Early Polo had some noteworthy educators who set the bar high in the area.

In 1847 John W. Frisbee, a graduate of New York Normal School, headed west. In 1853 he built the Rock River Normal School in Buffalo Grove where he intended to train teachers. In 1854 this enthusiastic individual was soon county superintendent of

schools and headed to do great things in Ogle County.

But he fell ill of typhoid fever and soon died.

The new town of Polo was on the horizon. 1854-55 Polo had its first school in the Williams Building which eventually housed Muench’s Shoe Store. Lucy Bassett was Polo’s first teacher. Then came John Savage who also taught at Williams Hall.

In 1857, Polo was forced to make a Polo School District and the town was divided into two parts with the division line at Mason Street. Presbyterian Church was rented and used as a school in one part of town. Helen Bogue was the first teacher at the church.

A one story brick building was built at the other end of town for $1,200. Sarah Hackett Stevenson taught at that brick building. Later that brick building became the home of Dr. G. B. Treat who was the father of Milbrey Mulnix.

These districts were poorly organized and there was conflict between the two. In 1867 the state stepped in and these two districts along with Buffalo Grove were all united. Eventually a permanent eight room building was built at the corner of Congress and Locust Streets. This blue limestone school cost $28,000 and accommodated 500 students of both high school and grade school. The first Polo alumni came from that school building.

ehinton@shawmedia.com Oregon’s new River’s Edge Farmers Market started its inaugural season last week with perfect weather and a large crowd.

“Our first day was a huge success,” Melanie Cozzi, commissioner of Public Property, told the council on Tuesday.

“We had more than 200 people. It was just great.”

Located along the west bank of the Rock River, the new market, held from 5-7:30 p.m. on Thursdays throughout the summer, is located north of the Oregon Fire Department.

The market offers fresh, locally grown produce, quality hand-made items, live music, and activities for kids.

The market also has electricity available to vendors who sell frozen meat.

Oregon’s new River’s Edge Farmers Market is open each Thursday. The market is located on the west bank of the Rock River, south of the Oregon dam.

Eventually, the market will also be able to serve customers who have SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) cards.

The SNAP program, formerly know as the food stamp program, provides extra funds to low-income families to buy groceries. The funds come on the Link Card which looks and swipes like a debit card at most grocery and convenience stores.

over 2 million of them live in Illinois.

Polo to host Town & Country Days June 16-20 with carnival, parade Polo’s Town & Country Days will be held June 16-20 with a carnival, parade, and plenty of kids events.

Polo Town & Country Days was first organized in 1966 by the Polo Jaycees as a way to raise money for the construction of a city pool.

The first festival was a three day celebration which included such events as a carnival, kiddie parade, drum and bugle corps exhibition, and a large community parade to finish out the weekend.

“Now, 53 years later, the festival has expanded into a four-day event that is kicked off with one of the most amazing fireworks display in the area!,” said Joey Kochsmeier. “The annual parade still closes out the celebration, and sandwiched in between are four days filled with fun for young and old.”

Mega Passes will be available until noon on June 17. They are good for the

entire weekend and cost $40. They can be purchased in Polo at Knies, First State Bank, and Blackhawk Area Credit Union.

The registration deadline to receive a shirt for the 5K is June 13. The race is Saturday June 19.

Encore! Mt. Morris welcomes Annie Timmer as their Summer 2021 Artist-in-Residence.

This is the fourth year for the Encore! A-i-R ten week summer artist position. Annie is a Forreston High School honors graduate, and currently a sophomore art education major at Illinois State University.

She has received many art awards, and has Annie Timmer had years of experience in Girl Scouting, 4-H, FFA, weaving/quilting, trap shooting, and has served in various leadership positions.

Annie and Encore! are planning many ways to make art fun this summer, including designing a number of paint-the-town projects in Mt. Morris parks, the Senior Center and other locations.

Jamboree returning with nine concerts for 2021 After a year of pandemic-induced silence, organizers of the Mt. Morris Jamboree is looking forward to a music-filled summer.

The popular live-music series is scheduled to begin in downtown Mt. Morris in July.

“Summer’s here and the time is right to celebrate hopefully getting beyond this nasty pandemic by throwing a party on our beautiful, historic campus every Friday night,” said organizer Larry Ubben.

“After taking last year off and starting a bit later this year in the interest of public safety, the Mt. Morris Jamboree is once again ready to rock!”

This year’s scheduled will include 9 concerts featuring bands that play a variety of musical styles. “We’re pleased to announce that Aireloom Music Studios will again be helping provide sound for a couple of acts this year,” Ubben said.

All shows are free to the public with the festivities commencing at 6 p.m. Food and drink concessions will be offered by different groups each Friday, with most of them being run by local charitable organizations.

“Several local small businesses will often be on hand to sell their wares, too.

All performances start at 7 p.m. and run until at least 9 p.m.,” Ubben said.

The series begins on July 2 and kicks off the Annual Let Freedom Ring Festival and Jonas Fultz Memorial Car Show. The Ogle County Pork Producers will be serving concessions.

Congrats to Oregon soccer, softball for regional wins

C

ongratulations are in order for both the Oregon girls soccer and softball teams for winning regionals. Not knowing what to expect from them, expectations were surpassed.

Interesting, the softball team was able to advance to the sectional, while BNC mates North Boone and Stillman did not. Maybe that momentum will carry over until next year.

After heart-breaking losses in the past, that trend continued for the Forreston softball team. In the regional finals, Pearl City rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to snatch a victory from the Cardinals, 3-2.

In the two previous post seasons, Forreston saw its season come to and end with 12-10 and 11-10 losses. They have proved capable of playing with anyone, but have not been able to close out the deal.

Part of the problem is not seeing the same type of competition that schools like Pearl City and others from the NUIC North division encounter. Still, the Cardinals hung with a very good Pearl City team.

Say, the IHSA did not offer any sort of playoffs, similar to basketball, volleyball and football being shut out of post-season action. Would Forreston feel better about themselves having romped through a division title and ended the year with a stellar record?

Maybe, but having a post season sure intensifies one’s sporting life. I say that as someone who was midway through high-school when the football playoffs began in 1974.

Prior to that time, everyone was peacefully content with a division/conference title, as that was as

good as you could get. You didn’t know any different and that was okay.

After the playoffs began, I still recall experiencing the same hurt the Forreston girls must have felt as my team lost a close football game and downstate dreams were dashed. If the playoffs wouldn’t have been there, that pain would have never been felt.

But, as we all know, there is something fulfilling about testing oneself against the best of Illinois. Just ask those teams that have achieved greatness with state championships.

At the 1A girls track sectional, perennial power Winnebago made a claim to that kind of acclaim by decimating the field on their home track. By the time you read this, the state meet will be in the books, but I predict the Indians will leave with a state trophy.

The drawback for them is strength in the distances instead of the sprints. With how track and field is formatted, it is much easier to win state with sprinters than distance runners.

Case in point- Jordan Thomas of Oregon in 2009.

Enough said.

Speaking of Oregon, look for the girls to add to

their total of 12 state places in the shot put and discus with Jenae Bothe and Brenna Noon in the mix.

This was one of the few times that Oregon did not send anyone down in a track event, but that’s okay.

The sport is called track and field for a reason.

For the record, the Hawks have a few more medals in the field than on the track, with over 50 all together.

For Forreston and Polo, their lone medals in past 15 years have both been in the discus (Kristi Naylon 2010, Mykil Baker 2013). At least, they finally got someone downstate this year for the first time in a while.

During the heydays of girls track, and before softball took hold of northwest Illinois, Forreston and Polo would have been a dynamite coop.

With spring sport being pushed back into the summer, Oregon’s boys track team took a hit with a couple, three of their guys unable to compete at sectional because of a band trip to Florida. Like the girls, Oregon will have tough time sending individuals or relays downstate on the track. If that happens, it would be first time in forever, Oh well, things are so different in the Covid era.

Hopefully, that is coming to an end and there will be a return to normalcy this fall. It will seem strange for football to be starting back up again after just wrapping up its season.

I was going to say volleyball too, but with yearround club sport activity, some sports never seem to shut down.

OBITUARIES SUSAN L. POPE

POLO - Susan Lynn Pope, 76, of Polo, died Thursday, June 3, 2021 at OSF Hospital in Peoria.

She was born January 15, 1945 in Janesville, Wisconsin, the daughter of John and Evelyn (Minnick) Farberg. Susan married Robert Pope on March 1, 1988.

Susan and her husband farmed near Polo. Susan was a member of the Polo Women’s Club. She enjoyed collecting Precious Moments, sewing, and cooking.

Susan is survived by her husband, Robert Pope of Polo; son, Jeffrey (Tiffany) Haan of Pontiac; two granddaughters, Madison and Avery; and her grandson, Weston.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Judy; and son, David.

Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m.

Saturday, June 12, in Lanark Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Susan’s memory.

WILLIAM B. WAGNER

OREGON - William B. Wagner, 84, died Monday, February 15, 2021 in Dixon.

He was born December 2, 1936 in Dixon, the son of Charles and Irma (Cronk) Wagner.

Bill attended Mt. Morris High School, and shortly afterwards, enlisted and served in the United State Army.

In 1957, he was a member of the 505th Infantry, the 11th Airborne Division as a paratrooper serving a tour of duty in Germany.

Bill worked at A&P supermarket and Kable Printing Company in Mt. Morris for many years, he then went to work for Delmonte Foods Corp. in Rochelle until his retirement in 1998.

In his younger years, Bill was a member of the Leaf River Horseshoe Riding Club. He enjoyed trail riding in southern Wisconsin

and northern Illinois. He enjoyed many years as a member of the Mt. Morris Boat Club where he and his family enjoyed water skiing and camping.

He was also a lifetime member of the Mt. Morris Moose Club. He was an avid bowler with the Kable Printing teams, enjoyed going fishing, and was an avid Chicago Bears fan.

Bill married Sharon Ackerson on March 29, 1969 at the Ashton United Methodist Church in Ashton. Bill and Sharon enjoyed square dancing and traveling throughout the U.S. in their RV club, they spent many years as snowbirds with friends in Weslaco and Alamo, Texas.

Bill was a member of the Oregon United Methodist Church, and later in life, the Lighthouse United Methodist Church of Oregon.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Sharon; daughter, Janet Heier; grandson, Joshua Wagner; and brothers Charles, Jr., Richard, and Jerry.

Bill is survived by his children, Robert (Peggy) Wagner of Baileyville, Joyce (Dana) LaPier of Belvidere, Jeffrey (Liz) Wagner of German Valley, Dawn Valdes Wagner of

Sharon, Wisconsin, and Chad Wagner of Oregon; 14 grandchildren, Ryan, Heather, Rebekah, Ben, Ashlea, Kyle, Kyle H., Brooke, Isa, Emily, Juan, Faith, Jovani, and Carlos; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Capes of Oregon, Patricia Carpenter of Belvidere, Peggy Janssen of Oregon, Shirley Palmer of Leaf River, and Beverly Snyder of Louisville, Kentucky; and many nieces and nephews.

A private funeral service was held at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 South 7th Street in Oregon, with the Pastor Don Jamerson of the First Free Methodist Church in Freeport, officiating.

Private burial was held at the Ashton Cemetery. A celebration of life open house will be held Saturday, June 12 at the Mt. Morris Moose Lodge in Mt. Morris, from 2 to 4 p.m. A prayer service will take place, with Pastor Matthew J. Smith of the Lighthouse United Methodist Church officiating.

Military honors for Bill will be held at 3 p.m. by the Oregon VFW Post 8739.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is established for the Mt. Morris Moose Club.

4-VEHICLE ACCIDENT

A Mt. Morris woman was arrested for driving under the influence after the vehicle she was driving struck multiple parked cars along Leaf River Road during the Forreston FFA Alumni Tractor Pull on Saturday.

Cassandra Kaltenbrun, 45, of Mt. Morris, was traveling northbound in the 800 block of S. Main Street in Leaf River at 7:44 p.m. when her 2001 Subaru struck two cars and a truck before overturning and coming to rest in the center of the road.

She was transported to Swedish American Hospital for minor injuries and arrested for DUI and no valid driver’s license. She was also cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, no insurance, and improper use of registration. She was released on an I-Bond.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with Leaf River Fire, responded to the accident, which was several yards west of the tractor pull.

19th Pound the Pavement July 3 Citations issued

Join the Mt. Morris community along with people from across the US for the 19th Annual Lois Nelson Memorial Walk and Fun Run this year as Pound the Pavement begins on Saturday, July 3, at 9 a.m. at Dillehay Park in Mt. Morris.

Registration begins at 8 a.m.

The event has grown to over 200 walkers/runners, bikers and strollers along with 60 sponsors to support the walk.

This family friendly and now traditional 4th of July community event is also a fundraiser for Northwest Illinois Special Olympics, as Lois worked with developmentally disabled adults as her vocation and also supports the Let Freedom Ring Festival.

Pound the Pavement is a scenic walk/fun run that travels approximately 4 miles around the streets of Mt. Morris. It followed the route that Lois walked every day, in any

kind of weather.

Over the past years support has exceeded $130,000 and is allocated to the above organizations.

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Department issued 166 citations during the recent Memorial Day “Click It or Ticket” enforcement period.

“Through the Memorial Day enforcement campaign, we helped make Illinois roads safer and spread the word that seat belts save lives,” said Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle.

While Illinois’ 2020 seat belt compliance rate was 94.6%, unbelted occupants still account for over half of those killed in traffic crashes.

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign aims to change the behavior of the millions of people who don’t buckle up. Thousands of lives could be saved each year if every vehicle occupant was properly restrained when traveling.

During the enforcement period Deputies also issued 6 written warnings. The 166 citations were for various violations including: 5 seat belt citations; 3 DUI arrests; 15 suspended/ revoked licenses; 9 uninsured motorists; 96 speeding citations; and 4 drug arrests.

The Illinois “Click It or Ticket” campaign is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation with federal highway safety funds.

REGIONAL NEWS Accused Sterling murderer on the lam for 5 weeks arrested in Colorado A man wanted for shooting and killing another man 5 weeks ago was arrested June 7 in a hotel in a Denver suburb.

U.S. marshals arrested Michael W.T. Bennett, 35, near Centennial, Colorado, without incident, Sterling Police said in a news release.

It’s an area he’s been known to travel to, the release said. He is in the Arapahoe County jail pending extradition to Whiteside County.

Michael W.T. Bennett is charged with Bennett first-degree murder in the killing of Joshua N. Hamrick, 39, who was found in his back yard at 901 W. 19th St. around 9:30 p.m. and pronounced dead at CGH Medical Center. Two women also were at the home at the time of the shooting – Bennett’s girlfriend, Olivia Sheley, and another woman who police have not identified.

An argument broke out between the two men, who knew each other. No motive or other details from the scene have been released. Bennett has a felony history in Whiteside County and is on probation.

Erie-Prophetstown’s Aylah Jones struck out 15 batters, walking no one.

Oregon’s Mia Trampel struck out 11.

Trampel’s 11th strikeout was the final out of the top of the seventh, ending it in a 2-0 Hawks’ win.

Oregon’s fifth-inning rally started with a strikeout as well.

Coming up to pinch hit in what was then a scoreless tie with one out in the fifth, Oregon’s Katelyn Bowers reached up to bunt a two-strike pitch up and out of the zone. She missed it, but so did Panthers catcher Mak Glassburn, allowing Bowers to race for first as the ball went back to the screen.

Bowers later stole second, and scored when Reilee Suter ripped a twoout double to left.

“The first [pitch] was just a normal pitch and then the second one I swung at was a rise and it was foul,” Suter said. “Then there was a couple balls, and someone in the stands said ‘it’s not

going to be a rise’ so I got prepared for not rise, and it wasn’t a rise.”

Suter scored moments later, as Bella Koertner singled up the middle to make it 2-0.

That was all the offense Trampel needed in the circle. She pitched onetwo-three innings in the second, fourth and sixth, and worked her way out of jams several times. Jones led off the first with a walk, but was stranded at second to end the inning. Jaiden Oleson led off the fifth with a single to left, eventually working her way around to third before a strikeout ended that inning. In the seventh, Corrie Remley led off with a single to right, but a strikeout, a pop out to first and another strikeout ended that inning and the game.

“She just brings pretty good heat,” Oregon coach Nate Rogers said. “She’s such a battler and a warrior. With the temperatures today we weren’t sure, we haven’t played in this hot weather, but she played through it.”

16 OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity.

June 1 At approximately 6:14 p.m., deputies along with the Polo Fire Department and Mt. Morris Fire Department responded to a two-vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Pines Road and Lowell Park Road.

A southbound box truck driven by Jaunot Nelson, 35, of Dallas, Texas, failed to stop at the stop sign on Lowell Park Road and entered the intersection and was struck by an eastbound vehicle traveling on Pines Road driven by Marcia Dewey, 37, of Polo.

Dewey was transported to KSB Hospital by Polo EMS and subsequently air lifted to OSF Saint Anthony’s with serious injuries.

A juvenile male passenger of Dewey’s vehicle was transported to a local hospital with suspected minor injuries.

Nelson was issued citations for disregarding an official traffic control device and

failure to stop at an Intersection.

June 2 At 9:48 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop at Illinois Rt. 38 and S. Beck Road for an equipment violation. After an investigation, Abigail E. Nimerfroh, 20, of DeKalb, was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license. Nimerfroh was also cited for no registration light. Nimerfroh was released on a signature I-bond.

At approximately 5:32 p.m., deputies responded to an address in the 2000 block of West Mud Creek Road in reference to a disturbance. After further investigation Lisa Smith, 32 of Mt Morris, was arrested for disorderly conduct. Smith was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

June 3 At approximately 5:30 p.m., deputies along with Rochelle EMS responded to the intersection of S. Mulford Road and E.

Twombly Road for a two-vehicle accident with minor injuries. After an investigation, it was determined that a Honda sedan, driven by Alexander Chavez, 27, of Rochelle was traveling westbound on E. Twombly Road, at which time he entered the intersection after failing to stop at a stop sign.

His car was struck by a pickup truck driven

by Jeremy Good, 37, of Rochelle, who was traveling northbound on S. Mulford Road.

Chavez was transported to the Rochelle Community Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. Chavez was also issued citations for failure to stop at an intersection and no valid driver’s license.

June 6 At approximately 6:30 a.m. hours, deputies were dispatched to a single vehicle accident on I-39 at mile marker 99 southbound. Upon arrival, deputies observed a blue Chevrolet Cruze with heavy front end and driver’s side damage.

June 5 Teara Burnside, 24, of Peoria, was arrested for driving while license suspended on I-39 near Monroe Center after being stopped for speeding, 103 mph. Burnside was released on an I-bond and will appear in Ogle County court at a later date.

June 7 James Jimenez, 41, of Dixon, was arrested at 9:14 a.m. for driving while license suspended and speeding following a traffic stop in the 6000 block of N. Route 2. Jimenez was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he is being held in lieu of bond.

June 5 Richard W. Major, 54, of Oregon, was arrested at 10:47 a.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for aggravated identity theft. Major was transported to the Ogle County jail.

Larry Tuggles, 64, of Aurora, was issued a citation at 6:15 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of River Road.

Christian G. Guerrero, 22, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 10:17 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 500 block of Gale Street.

After further investigation Damontae Perry, 23 of Rockford, was arrested and issued a citation for not having a valid driver’ license.

Perry received additional citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Perry was issued an I-bond with a future court date and released on scene.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville reports the following police activity.

May 24 At 3 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 300 block of N. 4th Street resulting in the arrest of Randi Suter, 33, of Rochelle, on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for contempt of court. Also arrested was Amber L. Keener, 36, of Dixon, who had an outstanding Ogle County warrant for contempt of court. Both Suter and Keener were transported to the Ogle County jail.

May 25 Joann G. Lee, 50, of Oregon, was issued citations at 9:34 a.m. for the illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred near the Seventh Street and W. Washington Street intersection.

May 26 Howard K. Dalke, 54, of Dixon, was arrested at 8:56 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. Dalke was transported to the Ogle County jail. This violation occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington Street.

May 27 At 11:59 a.m., police observed a vehicle that matched the vehicle described in the hit and run that occurred on May 19 on 10th Street. Upon further investigation, Julie A.

Robertson, 32, of Springfield, was arrested for improper use of registration, and unlawful use of a driver’s license. Robertson was also issued citations for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and leaving the scene of an accident with vehicle damage. Robertson was transported to the Ogle County jail.

May 28 L. C. Carr, 55, of Dixon, was issued a citation at 12:42 p.m. for illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver. This violation occurred near the Third and Washington Street intersection.

May 29 Raymond H. Beardin, 37, of Davis Junction, was issued a citation at 11:29 p.m. for speeding, 45 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

May 31 Emily A. Burnett, 19, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was issued a citation at 11:23 p.m. for speeding, 40 mph in a 30 mph zone, and on a civil citation for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. These violations occurred in the 400 block of S. Fourth Street.

June 1 Alissa M. Moreno, 25, of Dixon, at 8:14 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Moreno

June 2 At 6:09 p.m., Oregon Police issued Tiffiny E. Adcock, age 41, Dixon, a citation for speeding, 60mph in a 35mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

June 3 Walter C. Brady, 21, of Spragueville, Iowa, was arrested at 4:09 a.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Brady was transported to the Ogle County jail.

Joshua Mothershed, 38, of Sterling, was arrested at 7:40 p.m. on an outstanding Pope County warrant for possession of methamphetamine.

A passenger in Mothershed’s vehicle, Brittany L. Stanley, 32, of Sterling, was arrested for unlawful possession of cannabis as a passenger. Both Mothershed and Stanley were transported to the Ogle County jail.

June 4 Michael C. Cover, 27, of Dixon, was arrested at 8:19 p.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant for contempt of court. Cover was transported to the Ogle County jail.

June 6 Jonathan A. Kattner, 25, of Ottumwa, Iowa, was arrested at 8:09 p.m. for delivery of cannabis 500 grams to 2000 grams, a Class 2 felony; possession of cannabis 500 to 2000 grams, a Class 3 felony; and improper container of cannabis, a Class a misdemeanor. Kattner was transported to the Ogle County jail. These violations occurred in the 2000 block of South IL Route 2.

Nine parking tickets and 12 verbal warnings were issued during the week of May 24-June 6.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

In girls track and field, it is often upstart freshmen and sophomores making the biggest splash. For the Oregon Hawks, it was a reliable trio of upperclassmen setting the tone at the Class 1A Winnebago Sectional on June 3.

Long jumper Lydia Cermak and throwers Brenna Noon and Jenae Bothe will be making return trips to Charleston, site of next week’s state meet.

Bothe was a double-qualifier, winning the discus with a toss of 36.22 meters. Noon just missed qualifying with a third-place effort of 33.35, which was seven feet off her personal best.

“That was disappointing, but I didn’t let it bother me in the shot put,” said Noon, who is ranked No. 1 that event and top returning placer.

Her shot put mark of 12.42 meters bested the 11.82 of second-place Bothe.

Both look to get on the podium downstate.

“I think we could have done some damage last year,” said Bothe, who had her most fundamentally sound

“Just had to really focus on the next batter,” Trampel said.

The Panthers stranded six runners in the game and had four runners in scoring position, but were unable to score.

“I just told the girls at the end of the game that we’ve been scoring multiple runs a game all season long, and the same thing happened against Rock Falls the other night, we had girls in scoring position and, for whatever reason we just can’t get the extra base hit we need to score those runs,” Erie-Prophetstown coach Kerrie Tenboer said. “We had lots of opportunities and it just didn’t go our way.”

Trampel was able to rely on her fielders when she needed to. Remley twice had hard-hit balls directly at Oregon infielders. Glassburn had a sharp line drive with two outs in the sixth directly at Suter at shortstop.

“We had a lot of good communication and everyone was on their toes,” Suter said. “The day before the game, we practiced a lot of fly balls, so that

Both girls admitted to being tight during the discus, which saw Winnebago’s Hannah Logan put the pressure on them with 36-meter PR. “Competing in the discus allowed me to calm down,” Bothe said. “After I qualified, I went into the shot relaxed and had my best throw.”

With three more Hawk qualifiers, hall of fame throwing coach Doug Engle is approaching 100 total boys and girl state qualifications.

“We trust him and don’t want to deviate from anything he tells us,” Bothe said.

For Cermak, it was bittersweet after having run on state-qualifying

sprint relays as a freshman and sophomore. The 4x100-meter relay of Cermak, former state qualifier Jadyn Bothe, and newcomers Hadley Lutz and Ava Wight missed by one spot, taking third to Rockford Christian and Byron.

A bunt single in the first and an infield single in the second failed to produce any runs. Lena Trampel ripped a double to left in the fourth, the first ball any Oregon player had hit out of the infield in the game and in the process breaking a string of seven strikeouts in a row from Jones.

“Screwballs and riseballs always worked,” Jones said. “That’s my go-to pitch.

“Coach Tenboer always knows what to call. She knows the right sequence and she always knows what’s working for me.”

After the string of seven strikeouts, which included striking out the side in the third, she struck out four batters in the fifth and two more in the sixth.

“She’s been our rock every single time she’s been on the mound for us,” Tenboer said. “She was throwing lights out again. Her screwball, they were chasing so we just kept at that.

She threw a great game. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Oregon (23-7) defeated top-seeded Richmond-Burton in the sectional semifinal on Tuesday.

18 SPORTS ROUNDUP Oregon advances to sectional final The Oregon softball team advanced to the Class 2A sectional title game with a 4-3 win over Richmond-Burton on Tuesday afternoon.

Tied 3-3 entering the seventh inning, Lena Trampel drew a walk after being down in thd count 0-2, then twin sister Mia followed with a hard grounder to right field. The ball took a bad hop and hit the Richmond-Burton right fielder and bounced away, allowing Lena to score and sending Mia all the way around to third.

In the bottom of the inning, Richmond-Burton led off with a triple, but Mia Trampel induced a hard grounder to third, which caught the runner off the base. She was eventually tagged out, then Mia Trampel got a pop out and a strikeout to end the game.

Liz Mois drove in the first urn of the game with a groundout in the first inning, then Gracen Pitts’ solo home run in the third made it 2-0 Oregon. The Hawks tacked on a run in the fourth when a pickoff throw to third sailed into left field.

Mia Trampel struck out five in a complete game, and Ava Hackman made a diving catch in left field to save a run.

“The biggest thing has been our defense has really emerged to take over,” Oregon coach Nate Rogers said. “Mia was solid in the circle, and the girls played pretty good defense behind her. It was a total team effort.”

Their time of 52.1 was 1½ seconds better than their seeded time coming in, and less than a second behind Byron.

“I’m disappointed the two seniors [Jadyn Bothe and Cermak] can’t go back down again, but to PR by that much is tremendous,” Oregon coach Nick Schneiderman said.

Wight nearly made it in the 100 meters, finishing only .06 out of the second-place time of 13.30. Right behind her was Alex Dusing of Forreston/Polo, who was fifth in both sprints.

Cermak leaped 4.89 meters in the long jump to punch her ticket downstate with a second-place finish. The winner was Cali Minke of Dakota (5.55), who also won the triple jump, 200 and 400.

Baseball - Regional Final Forreston falls to Eastland: The Eastland baseball team scored four runs in the top of the first and four more in the third to knock off top-seeded Forreston 8-3 in a Class 1A regional final Monday in Forreston.

Wyatt Baber had a single, triple and three RBIs for the Cougars, and Cason Witt had a single, two doubles and two RBIs. Jaxson Sturtevant also drove in a pair of runs, and Carson Heckman also had an RBI. Kellen Henze scored twice.

Drew Burkholder didn’t give up a run or a hit in 4 2/3 innings on the mound, striking out seven with one walk. Witt gave up three earned runs and three hits in 2 1/3 innings of relief, with one strikeout and one walk.

Girls Soccer Rockford Christian 3, Oregon 1: The Hawks saw their season end in the 1A sectional semifinals in Rockford.

Hadley Lutz scored Oregon’s lone goal in the final minute of the game, and Dylan Burke had seven saves in goal. The Hawks played without first-team all-conference player Leah Watters, who was on a band trip to Disney World, and was also missing the starting goalkeeper and a starting defender.

“Rockford Christian is a good team, and they were the better team today,” Oregon coach Seger Larson said. “If we have

everybody there, we can compete, but they had the best player on the field.

“But this team really came together this year. We lost a lot of one-goal games, and it was nice at the end of the year when we had a full team and were playing as a unit. We have a young team, and I’m hoping that they see how close we were to moving on, and that after not being too successful in the beginning of the season, they still had a successful season, and it’s something for them to build on.”

“I was so nervous and my steps were off,” said Cermak, who won the event two years ago.

For Forreston/Polo, it was a freshman doing something that hadn’t been done in the program for eight years – qualifying for state.

Letresse Buisker placed second in the high jump at 1.47 meters to earn the automatic state qualification. She tied with two other girls, including Mariah Drake of Oregon, but advanced on fewer misses.

The real surprise, though, was her performance in the 300 hurdles, where she almost took another second. She bested her seed with a time of 52.49, losing by only .8 seconds to Alana Julian of Byron.

“That’s astonishing, and a bigger deal than what she did in the high jump,” F-P coach Terry Jenkins said.

“I thought I had the Byron girl,” Buisker said. “It was amazing.”

Another near miss for F-P was Emileigh Williams in the 100 hurdles; she had a third-place time of 17.37.

“All our girls performed so well,” Jenkins said.

Pearl City may have struck out 15 times, but the Wolves also had nine hits, including seven by their first three batters: Brynn Solt, Madyson Stephen and Handsaker.

Wrestling Oregon 51, Polo 27: The Hawks topped the Marcos in a dual that was originally scheduled to be competed on Polo’s football field, but was moved inside because of rain.

Polo got pins from Wayde Reimer (182) and Wyatt Queckboerner (195), while Dimetri Garza won an 8-5 decision at 106.

Oregon wins three duals: The Oregon wrestlers won three dual meets at home on June 1, defeating Mendota 54-6, Sterling Newman 57-18, and Amboy 54-12.

The Clippers gave up forfeits to Anthony Bauer, Andrew Herbst, Gabe Eckerd, Ethan George, Collin Winterland, Alex George, and Adam Glendenning.

Jared Glendenning won 6-5, Seth Stevens pinned at 1:05, and Jonathon Alaniz survived a late reverse to win 5-4. Mendota had just one wrestler who won by a fall at 5:04.

The Hawks were down 18-0 early against the Comets, but worked their way back with a 5-2 win by Stevens, a pin in 37 seconds by Eckerd, and first period pins by Adam Glendenning and Alaniz. Herbst, Ethan George, Alex George, and Winterland won by forfeit.

In Genoa on June 3, Oregon started with forfeits to Caleb Wolford and Edwin Estrada and rolled to a 37-0 lead on pins by Bauer, Stevens, and Herbst, and 8-1 win by Eckerd, and a 12-4 major decision by Ethan George.

Against Stillman Valley, Oregon lost two by falls early but fought back with pins by Stevens and Herbst, a 7-0 win by Eckerd, and a half nelson by Adam Glendenning. Estrada, Winterland, Alex George and Alaniz took forfeits in the meet to give the Hawks a

45-24 win.

The Oregon 12-meet win streak came to a halt in Sycamore on June 5 as the Hawks faced two 2A teams. The host Spartans trounced Oregon 58-10 in the opener.

Estrada took a forfeit aqnd Herbst scored two nearfalls in an 11-1 major decision for the only Hawk win.

The IWCOA State series begins June 13.

Polo earns split: The Marcos beat Freeport 39-36, but lost 48-18 to Dakota.

Braydon Altherr got a win for Polo in the 160-pound match against Dakota with a pin in 3:48.

Forreston-Polo 87, Fulton 51, Stockton 49, Pearl City 17: The Cardinals took first in a home quadrangular. Forreston-Polo’s Ethan Cain won the 800 in 2:10.36 and cleared 1.78 meters to win the high jump. Carter Daws threw 29.31 meters to win the discus.

Bennett Soltow swept the hurdles with a 15.63 in the 110 hurdles and a 40.56 in the 300 hurdles. Avery Grenoble won the 100 in 11.98 seconds.

Baseball Mendota 16, Oregon 9: Andres Castaneda hit a grand slam and a triple, drove in six runs and scored three runs June 2 to help the No. 8-seeded Trojans to a win over the No. 9 Hawks in a Class 2A regional quarterfinal in Mendota.

AFC 9, Polo 8: The third time was almost a charm for the Polo baseball team against AFC. Instead, it was the Raiders who had their season continue after a 9-8, come-from-behind victory on June 2 in a Class 1A regional quarterfinal.

AFC (5-12) lost to Forreston on June 4.

The Raiders took a doubleheader from the Marcos, 13-3 and 16-4, back on May 19, but the latest encounter was anything but easy.

AFC trailed 8-5 entering the bottom of the sixth inning before piecing together what turned out to be a game-winning rally. With one out, Michael Cochrane singled, Dylan Gonnerman reached on an error, then Jordan Harris singled to load the bases.

Cole Faivre and Brady Clark had back-toback RBI doubles in the top of the first inning to get Polo (0-13) off to a good start. The Marcos scored in four of the next five innings to seize a three-run lead, but couldn’t hold off the Raiders in the sixth.

“We played probably our best game of the season,” Polo coach Nate White said. “We got good pitching out of Gavin [Zell]. He did his job, throwing strikes. The defense played well for the most part, and we hit the ball well. We just came up a little bit short.”

Clark doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored once to pace the Polo attack. Zell reached base four times with two singles.
