Kable Concert Band of Mt. Morris will being its 125th season this month.

Summer concerts will be held Wednesday evenings, at 7:30 p.m., June 16 through Aug. 4, at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

“Come early, enjoy an ice cream social preceding the concert,” said volunteer Sylvia Saunders.

In celebration of the 125th anniversary of the band, old favorites as well as newer contemporary favorites, will be performed under the baton of Director Andy Eckardt. Guest performers are also featured.

“Bench seating is available, or bring your lawn chairs. The Kable Band will ‘Say It with Music’ this summer!,” Saunders said.

Community garden awarded 5 raised beds The Mt Morris Community Garden and the Loaves and Fish Food Pantry have been awarded 5 raised beds through the Obama Legacy Initiative.

This Initiative is a not-for-profit that was inspired by its namesake to help provide healthy, nutritious food for struggling and impoverished American across the country.

2021 marks the 12 th year the garden

has provided fresh produce and outdoor activity to those who participate.

The garden also distributes approximately 5,000 pounds of fresh vegetables to Loaves and Fish Food Pantry guests.

The plots are free; however, gardeners are required to commit to helping with specific tasks related to the overall upkeep of the garden.

POLO CLASS OF 2021

ehinton@shawmedia.com The last act in an untraditional school year for Polo’s Class of 2021 was one steeped in Marcos tradition—the “Silly String Fight”.

The 37-member class walked out onto the football field on a mild, sunny afternoon and after three short speeches by 7 classmates, pointed their cans of Silly String at each other and fired.

To start the ceremony, Harper Clark and Abby Gorzny gave the welcome, thanking family, friends, and staff for helping the Class of 2021.

“We’d like to start by thanking all you here today and all of those who supported us throughout this crazy school year,” said Gorzny. “Our number one supporters were always our own classmates, so for that we thank each and everyone one of you.”

Valedictorian Joey Bardell, who plans on attending Iowa State University to study physics and engineering, had some help from co-salutatorians Marsh Blake and Katy Hess with all three giving the Senior Class Remarks.

“If you guys know Joey, he hasn’t said 200 words in high school, so we figured this year we’d better get the salutatorians to help him out so that record can stay intact,” joked Principal Andy Faivre.

Blake plans on attending University of Illinois to study biology on a pre-med track. Hess plans on attending the University of Dubuque to study nursing.

The trio said the Class of 2021 had accomplished many things in athletics, extracurriculars, and in the classroom.

“For 13 years we have gone to school together,” said Bardell. “This is a special class that possesses many great qualities such as being the funniest group of kids we know. We will always remember each other. Congratulations to the Class of 2021.”

Faivre said he was “extremely excited” to certify the class that had endured “two years unlike any other class in PCHS history”.

“And I forgot to mention this, these kids have worked hard and after all they have been through, if you want to cheer, go ahead and cheer,” Faivre told the audience to robust applause.

Logan Kindle’s grandpa took Faivre’s advice to heart. “That’s my grandson!,” he shouted when Logan picked up his diploma.

Izzy Sellers and Alyssa Wakenight closed the ceremony.

“Well guys we did it, we are officially high school graduates and have the signed papers to prove it,” Sellers said.

“There are so many more memories made by our class and many more to come as we part ways and venture out into the big world outside of our small town,” Wakenight said.

After class members moved their tassels to the other side of their caps, the Silly String cans appeared and the final fun began.

School board president Matt Mekeel and Superintendent Kelly Mandrell were on clean-up duty after the “fight”, wiping silly string from metal chairs and picking clumps of it off the field.

Deal near on energy package?

Illinois lawmakers are staying open for business as they await a possible deal on a sweeping energy proposal that would keep the state’s fleet of nuclear power plants online while providing incentives for development of more wind and solar generation.

Senate President Don Harmon, D-Oak Park, issued a statement Tuesday saying he had been informed that a deal had been reached between Gov. JB Pritzker and Exelon, the parent company of Commonwealth Edison and the owner of six nuclear power plants in Illinois.

“I’m informed that an agreement has been reached between the governor and Exelon on a proposal that would save jobs, which has been our goal all along. That’s why we support the governor in these talks,” Harmon said. “We also stand with the governor on de-carbonization targets that need to be in a final deal.”

The statement came less than 24 hours after the House and Senate passed a $42.3 billion budget plan for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1. Passage of a budget is typically one of the last things lawmakers do before adjourning a legislative session.

This year, though, talks on an energy package were continuing behind closed doors even as lawmakers were working into the wee hours of the morning Tuesday to push through the budget package. After it passed, the House adjourned “until

“The Senate remained in session with the hope of voting on an agreement today (Tuesday),” Harmon said. “We stand ready to return to the Capitol when the governor’s plan is ready for action.”

Pritzker campaigned in 2018 on a pledge to shift Illinois’ electric energy industry more toward renewable and zero-emission sources, and he has set a goal of achieving a 100 percent non-carbon power system by 2050.

Achieving that goal, however, relies on keeping the state’s nuclear power fleet online, and Exelon has threatened to close two or more nuclear plants that it says are unprofitable unless it receives subsidies to make them economically viable.

But many lawmakers have been skeptical of Exelon’s claims, in large

part because of the company’s connection with ComEd. Last year, ComEd entered a deferred prosecution agreement with federal authorities in which the company admitted to engaging in a yearslong bribery scheme that involved awarding jobs and contracts to close associates of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan in order to gain his support for legislation favorable to the company.

At issue in the talks over an energy package is the question of how much of a subsidy the nuclear plants need, how long the subsidies should last and how to phase out the state’s remaining coal- and gas-fired power plants while creating new energy-related jobs for the workers who would be displaced.

ehinton@shawmedia.com Oregon city officials are sweetening the pot to try and entice new businesses to town.

The Oregon City Council approved a new Commercial Lease Subsidy Gr ant (CL SG) las t wee k th at is designed to spur commercial development. Through the program, the city will pay up to half of monthly lease costs for new businesses up to one year.

“Qualified applicants may be eligible for lease subsidies in an amount not to exceed $600 per month, or 50% of monthly lease payment for a period up to 12 months,” said city administrator Darin DeHaan.

The grant program was passed unanimously May 25.

The maximum grant cumulative benefit is $7,200.

“We are looking for unique businesses to fill the available commercial space in our Historic District and Riverfront Zone,” DeHaan said. “We will work directly with building owners, and entrepreneurs to offer this incen-

tive to potential businesses that fit our community needs. Our services will include helping to market available space; working to create space specifications that are available for potential businesses; and/or to actively reaching out to potential businesses.”

Mayor Ken Williams said the program is designed to help small, entrepreneurial businesses.

“We know we need more retail downtown,” said Williams. “This is designed for small entrepreneurial businesses that rent. We are looking for retail we don’t have. No bars or restaurants, we’ve got those.”

Finance Commissioner Terry Schuster said the program should increase tax revenues for the city while helping building owners find tenants.

DeHaan said about 5 locations are available downtown.

The city’s contributions would end after one year, Williams said. “This is not renewable, we feel at the end of

year they should be sustainable,” he said.

Monroe Township was organized in 1850

Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

onroe Township is located in the northeast corner of Ogle County. An early map of Ogle County shows two trails running through Monroe Township.

The Galena Chicago Trail, established in 1837, ran generally east-west through the northern half of Monroe Township and the Rockford Ottawa Trail ran in a general north-south direction in the west half of the township.

This is interesting because there were no communities or towns at this time.

Monroe Township contained mostly prairie soil with a fairly small track of timber located close to the Kilbuck Creek which ran through the western edge of the Township.

Early settlers in Ogle County homesteaded mainly on land close to timber which supplied them with logs to build their homes and fuel.

The township was also a far distance from markets.

The earliest settlers arrived in the 1850s. This was 14 years after Oregon was founded. In 1840 they purchased prairie land for $1.50 per acre from the Dixon Land Office. Monroe Township was organized in 1850.

Monroe Center is the only town located in Monroe Township. A small community called Dutchtown was located on Crill Road north of Monroe Center.

It consisted of a school, church, Roseland Cemetery and a Town House.

All the buildings were relocated to Monroe Center, then called Monroe Station in 1875. This happened after Silas Tyler donated land along the rail road right of way for the construction of Monroe Center.

Rosewood Cemetery remains today.

Monroe Center is located near the center of Monroe Township on Route 72.

Illinois Route 72 is an east-west road that runs from the intersection with Illinois Route 73 north of Lanark and east to Illinois Route 43 in Chicago.

This is a distance of 110 miles.

Monroe Center and Davis Junction became active early towns when the Chicago and Pacific completed its rail service.

These towns and the railroad were essential to the farm community. The railroad made it possible to ship grain

livestock to Chicago. The local stockyards were still being active during WWII. Today there is a fire department, ambulance service, a park with lighting, a city sewer system, two churches and a Lion’s Club.

The following are selected news from Monroe Township and the Village of Monroe Center in 1897. ( A history of Monroe Township by Judy Joly and William Condon ) Rev. Bonnen spoke at the church Thursday evening. One of the topics was “How to Get Married.”

M

y first memory of the DLR school in Mt. Morris goes back 50 years when my school came over to compete in a junior high track meet. Of course, it was a high school then and I also recall visiting another time in the early 70s when the Mounder basketball team was flying high.

I bring this up because of the on-going controversy over Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney’s recommendation to close the school.

Though I did not attend school in Mt. Morris, I understand the sentimental attachment to it. My wife Kathy taught in the Mt. Morris system for many years and always said it was her favorite place.

The community and school system is special to me and it is sad that much of that identity was lost in 1994 when the school district ceased to exist.

With much interest, I have been following the dialogue between townspeople and Mr. Mahoney. I applaud both for speaking to their convictions and can see merit in what everyone says.

Can a compromise be reached that will satisfy both sides? Occasionally in these public debates, creative ideas will surface that had not been considered.

Credit to Mahoney for putting solid research into the recommendation and having the courage to face a non-receptive audience. Credit to the good people of Mt. Morris for their passion, not just for this subject, but many others challenges the community has faced as of late.

As an outsider looking in, I will continue to view the proceedings with fascination. As a columnist, I will offer my opinion on the matter and that is this: Mt. Morris ceded control of their schools in 1994 and the final decision on DLR school is the domain of the Oregon school district.

Another community function I recently took interest in was the Chana School rummage sale at the Coliseum. With the vast amount of donated items, it is readily apparent that people have way too much stuff.

About $5,300 was made from these donations, but there were still loads of clothing, dish and glassware, Christmas decorations, books, furniture, tools, etc. left over. I can remember when storage units first started appearing in the 1970s and thought what a silly idea.

Little did I know how much a consumption-driven society we would become. Speaking of society, one reason I volunteered at the sale was to visit with people.

chatting and catching up with folks and that exercise is a lot easier with masks off.

Another recent interaction for me was a meeting of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Merit Commission Board. As a member of this board, I have a chance to help review candidates for hire or promotion.

In light of all the abuse the good men and women in law enforcement take, it was refreshing to see there are still good people willing to protect us. How long this lasts is anyone’s guess, but I like to think that Ogle County will remain a more viable career choice than larger crime-ridden metropolitans.

It also helps that our county officials and residents support police more than their larger city counterparts. If I were in law enforcement, I’d rather go where I am wanted.

Do not dilly dally, get your shingles vaccination now!

I

felt like I just wanted to be soaking in the sun in 90 degree weather. Instead I was chilled as my back ached with shingles and it was just plain cold outside. There was no lounging in the sun that day. By the next day the weather was better and the sun felt good.

Amazing how a little sun makes a person feel good.

A number of years ago when Kenneth came down with shingles he quickly sent me to the Ogle County Health Department for a shingles shot. I had to pay for it myself but it was worth it so I would not get that itchy stuff.

I thought I was protected for the rest of my life.

Obviously that was not the case and I had been warned that I needed to update for necessary protection. I simply did not get it in time.

On that Friday, May 7, several in the family had gone to the chicken place to celebrate Kenneth’s birthday in heaven and we stuffed ourselves with Chicken George. Later that night it hit me in the back big time and I thought it was all that fried food.

I limped through the week and found I felt better if I did not eat much of anything. I was also working that week with Sauk Valley Community College on a video to be used at their graduation. I had been surprised earlier in the month with the Distinguished Alumni Award and they were coming to Aplington House to do a video.

I was to put together a short presentation and when they did the video, I was to use a teleprompter.

This was a whole new experience for me and I was quite interested in what a teleprompter would be like.

When Jim arrived that morning at Aplington House, we selected the room with the Underground Railroad quilt. Lucille Woodin had put together this lovely quilt and it made a wonderful background.

Jim told me I could sit at the table and we would hide the microphone behind the soup tureen that Dorothy Dacken donated to the museum. I was just glad I could sit down because I was not too steady on my feet that morning.

There is a knack to using a teleprompter and I wanted to go a little faster. You had to learn how to pace yourself. I was glad when it was all over with and I could go home and rest.

Polo Historical Society hot water, and honey. Finally the day of graduation came and son Steve escorted me to Sauk Valley Community College for the graduation.

I felt great and it was a wonderful evening. I sat next to Anah Chamberlain who was being honored as a Rising Star. She is going on to Western University and she is excited about her future. It was nice to visit with her.

By this time I had a rash on my back and tummy, but it did not itch or seem to bother me. It looked like shingles but it had taken so long to develop that one wondered if I had something else going on. I just had to be patient because it soon hit full force and I ended up quite sick in bed.

I would have been quite content just to rest in bed but my back ached terribly and it did not like any position I chose to put my body in.

I welcomed any home remedy since the medical world did not have any suggestions. Most of their help comes right at the beginning of developing shingles and I was way beyond that initial development.

I had a book published by the Amish of home remedies and I was certain they would have something to help with shingles. I never found the book so I seemed to be on my own.

What helped me the most was a bean bag that I warmed up in the microwave. The heat soothed my aching back and I used it night and day.

Each day became a little better and one day I felt good enough to head to Chadwick to take my driver’s test. That was coming up and I needed to get that done.

In a little over an hour, I was headed back home after doing the driving part. Glad that was over.

My advice to anyone who is dilly dallying on getting the shingles shots is do it right now because it is no fun when you get the actual stuff. You are miserable.

SCHOLARSHIPS Farm Bureau scholarship winners

Brooklynn Hollis, Kayla White, Megan Hagemann, Morgan Schabacker, Isaac Charbonneau, Olivia Hopkins, Adrianne Hall and Amanda Schramm were all recently named as recipients of scholarships awarded by the Ogle County Farm Bureau in 2021.

Kayla White was awarded the Del Flessner Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,500. This scholarship was created to honor the legacy of long-time Ogle County Farm Bureau Manager, Del Flessner.

She is the daughter of Ryan and Michelle White and is a 2020 graduate of Stillman Valley High School. She is

currently majoring in Agronomy at Highland Community College.

Brooklynn Hollis and Amanda Schramm were named winners of the $1,000 General Farm Bureau Scholarship.

Hollis is the daughter of Todd and Jodi Hollis, German Valley. She is a 2018 graduate of Forreston High School and currently attends the University of Wisconsin Platteville majoring in Dairy Science.

Schramm is the daughter of Brenda Schramm. She is a 2020 graduate of Stillman Valley High School and will be attending the University of Wisconsin Platteville next fall majoring in Animal Science.

Morgan Schabacker was named the recipient of the

$1,000 Don Bybee Memorial Scholarship, sponsored through the generosity of the Bybee Family to honor Mr. Bybee for his many years of service to agriculture in Ogle County.

She is the daughter of Todd Schabacker and Anita Friedlund, Rochelle, and is a 2020 graduate of Rochelle Township High School. She is majoring in Agricultural Business at Iowa State University.

Adrianne Hall is the recipient of the Mark Detig Memorial Scholarship awarded in the amount of $1,000. This scholarship honors the late Mark Detig for his service to the Ogle County Pork Producers Association and Ogle County agriculture.

Megan Hagemann was awarded the first George LeFevre Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. It also is funded with the cooperation of the Jeff and Joyce Tremble Family, recognizing Mr. Lefevre for his lifelong service to Ogle County agriculture.

She is the daughter of Brad and Jean Hagemann, Mt. Morris. She is a 2020 Forreston High School graduate studying Animal Science at Highland Community College.

This marks the 22nd year that the Ogle County Farm Bureau has awarded scholarships to member dependents who seek to pursue course studies in agriculture at an accredited institution of higher education.

Residents sound off on proposal to close school Superintendent says he’ll present closure plan to Oregon School Board this month

“Sad and disheartened” is how one Mt. Morris resident described her feelings after learning of the recent proposal to close the David L. Rahn Junior High, the village’s last remaining school.

“Here we go again, having to defend having a school in Mt. Morris. I am sad and disheartened,” said Connie Augsburger during a May 27 town hall meeting. “I feel like the writing is on the wall.”

Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney is proposing closing DLR due to decreasing enrollments and increasing maintenance costs.

It was the third time in 12 days that Mahoney had outlined his proposal to close the school. On May 17, he presented the proposal to the Oregon School Board and on May 26 he addressed the Mt. Morris Village Board.

On May 27, Mahoney and school board president Bryan Wills, held the 2 and one-half hour meeting in the DLR gym with about 75-80 people attending. Most gave impassioned pleas to keep the school in town with a couple others asking for more details and a delay in any decision until more community input was given.

Mahoney said it took him 3 years to come to the conclusion to recommend closing the 66-year-old school, which houses 7th and 8th grade students. He said the building needs $6 million in repairs and is costing the district’s budget about $400,000 a year.

He is proposing closing the school at the end of the 2021-22 school year and moving students to Oregon High School, located 5 miles to the east.

Rob Urish, former school board member for both the Mt. Morris and Oregon school districts, and chairman of the Mt. Morris Economic Development Corporation, asked when the proposal would be presented to the school board for a vote.

“I’ll present this to the board next month, the June board meeting,” answered Mahoney.

“And is there some compulsion to do that, it seems rather quick to me, but why June instead of next fall or next winter if you’re not going to close the building until next year?,” asked

Mahoney said he wanted to make sure teachers had ample time to plan.

“I also didn’t see the value to continue to drag this out. I believe the board has all the information it needs to make a decision so I am going to recommend they make that decision in June.”

Augsburger was one of 24 Mt. Morris residents who spoke with several of them referencing a school board decision in October 2004 not to rebuild the Rahn Elementary School in Mt. Morris following a fire at that school 8 months earlier.

Augsburger said her son was a third grade student at Rahn Elementary when it “burned to the ground”.

Following the fire, school board officials at that time, opted to move grade school students to the Oregon campus and not rebuild Rahn Elementary.

“Due to the wonderful behavior of the staff and teachers, all of kids and the staff and teachers got out of the school in record time and no one was injured,” she said. “My son lost his Cub Scouts shirt sadly and a lot of kids lost their sports equipment and their musical instruments and so on, and ultimately, when the school board decided to take the insurance proceeds

and balance the budget of the school district on the back of the ashes of Rahn Elementary, they made a ‘Mounder’ out of me for life.”

‘Mounder’ was the school mascot for the Mt. Morris High School before that school district merged with Oregon in 1994.

“I am not from here, but I’ve lived here long enough that I realize communities have a heart. And part of the heart resides in the building where their children attend school,” she said to applause. “And I have to tell you how sad, disheartened, and disappointed I am that here we are 17 years later having to defend our existence as a community that needs its heart. And to find out that this is a thought that

has been in your mind for the last 3 years and its going to be voted on next month?”

She also questioned Mahoney’s timeline for recommending closure of the junior high. “This is something that could have been prevented. Three years is a long time. We could have done a lot. We could have raised bond issues. We could have had fundraisers.

We could have become more educated.

We could have offered our thoughts, our perspectives, our expertise,” she said.

Mt. Morris Village Trustee Jerry Stauffer also asked that a vote on the proposal be delayed . “I strongly recommend that other options be looked at before you vote on this and I am going to recommend that you don’t vote on it next month. I can see no reason for a fast vote on this,” Stauffer said. “I am sure that citizens of this town would be willing to look and help with other options.”

He also asked to be able to tour the building, after hearing “reports” on how badly it needs repairs.

Augsburger said the Oregon High School was “at least as old” as DLR and wondered how much of a mainte-

The school district could issue bonds to pay for the work, which would then be passed on to all taxpayers within the school district as debt-service, Mahoney said.

Mahoney commissioned a study from the University of Illinois at Springfield in 2020 to help determine the best solution. Closing DLR will save the district more than $200,000 a

year in operational costs, the study concluded. He said he commissioned the independent study, which was conducted by three professors who were superintendents, to look at what was available and what their recommendation would be.

“I asked them to come and do that because I wanted to make sure I didn’t miss anything. So it was really more of a confirmation of what I believed what was going to be my recommendation,” Mahoney said.

nance drain it would continue to be on the school district.

“Yeah, this is an old building, sure it us,” Augsburger said referring to DLR. “And there is another really old building in the school district and its the one you want all the kids that go to school here now to go to school over there. Balancing the budget on the heart of the Village of Mt. Morris isn’t going to solve the school board’s economic woes.”

Mahoney has said his recommendation was not something he wanted to do, but was based on the district’s finances which have been operating at a deficit of $400,000 for 5 years, each year, due in part to maintenance costs at DLR. He said other measures to cut spending over the last 5 years have already been undertaken, including cutting the teaching staff 13% and the administrative staff 28%.

A state-required 10-year Health, Life, Safety survey of the district buildings, done last fall, showed that nearly $6 million in state-mandated improvements are needed, including asbestos removal, at DLR. Mahoney said the building’s wastewater pipes also need to be replaced and the gym floor. “It can’t be refinished any more. We have sanded it

“I understand the short term concern, but there’s got to be a look to the future,” he said.

Labash said the plan to close the school does not allow for future growth and argued that current enrollment will not stay static.

Mahoney has said enrollment is not expected to increase for the school district.

Labash, and others attending Thursday’s meeting, said closing the junior high will “further polarize” Mt. Morris residents and make passage of a any school-related referendum impossible.

Stauffer agreed. “If you close this school you will never pass another referendum,” he said shouting. “Yes, I am emotional tonight. This is a big thing for Mt. Morris. The school board needs to listen to Mt. Morris!”

If the school board decides to close DLR, Mahoney said options for the building would be to try and sell it “as is” or pay to have all the asbestos removed and then try and sell it, or raze it.

The Forreston FFA Alumni will be hosting the 10th Annual Truck and Tractor Pull at Leaf River Daze on Saturday, June 5.

Following a tractor parade, the pull will feature classes for antique tractors at noon, farm tractors at 2 p.m., trucks at 4 p.m., and Badger State Pullers at 7 p.m.

The entry fee for pullers is $25 per hook.

In order to provide an event that brings the community together, there will be no admission fee this year, but donations will be accepted at the gate.

Funds raised will go toward supporting Forreston High School Ag Education and FFA Chapter.

Claudia Reckamp, a senior at Oregon High School, was selected to receive a $2,500 STAR Scholarship from the P.E.O. Sisterhood.

She was recommended by P.E.O. Chapter CU of Mt. Morris.

Reckamp is on the Academic Team, in band serving as a drum major and as the teacher’s assistant, has played soccer, and has been involved in school plays, including serving as a director.

She will attend the University in Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in the fall to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree.

New River’s Edge Farmers Market begins this week Vendors to set up along the west bank of the Rock River from 5-7:30 p.m.

Oregon’s new River’s Edge Farmers Market starts its inaugural season this week with 19 vendors situated along the west bank of the Rock River.

The new market, held from 5-7:30 p..m. on Thursdays throughout the summer, is located north of the Oregon Fire Department.

The market will offer fresh, locally grown produce, quality hand-made items, live music, and activities for kids.

The market will be unique because electricity is available to vendors who sell frozen meat. Eventually, the market will also be able to serve customers who have SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) cards.

The SNAP program, formerly know as the food stamp program, provides extra funds to low-income families to buy groceries. The funds come on the

Link Card which looks and swipes like a debit card at most grocery and convenience stores.

In the United States, over 45 million people are receiving benefits and just over 2 million of them live in Illinois.

“This will be great for people who want access to fresh food and for those who use SNAP,” said Commissioner Terry Schuster.

POLO - Keith Dean Hannah, 92, of Polo, passed away on May 29, 2021 at Pinecrest Manor in Mt. Morris, where he resided the last 3 years.

Keith was born on March 30, 1929 at home in Peoria County to Hildreth Ray and Lula Francis Hannah. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marlyn Millard; his brothers, Hildreth Ray Hannah Jr., Robert Hannah, Glendon Hannah and Richard Hannah; and his loving wife of 64 years, Marilyn Joan Hannah.

He is survived by his sisters, Lula Francis (Fran) Adolphson and Cora Atteberry; sister-in-law, Dee Ruckman; sons, Steve (Marty) of Hudson, Ohio and Scott of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; daughters, Jill (Richard) Dutton of London, England, Kim (Cory) Cassens of Stockton, and Lori (Curt) Leppert, of Rockford; grandchildren, Keith (Brittany) Hannah and Natalie (Ben) Hackett, Abby, Rachel and Ashley Cassens, and Vivian and Jack Leppert; great-grandchildren, Jackson, Amelia and Maximus Hannah; and many nieces and nephews.

Keith grew up in Mossville. He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 and was stationed in Germany. After his military service, Keith returned to Mossville.

In 1955 Keith, married Marilyn (McFall), and they lived and worked on the family farm until 1964, when they moved to a farm near Polo.

While farming and providing for his family was Keith’s focus, he was also very active in the Ogle County Farm Bureau, the Polo Cooperative Association and was a Woosung Township Trustee.

Keith retired from farming in 2009 at the age of 79. In retirement, Keith spent many hours honing his wood working skills. Keith enjoyed the family coming home, but also traveling to visit them. These visits almost always included helping with a DIY project or two.

The family is very grateful for the care he received at Pinecrest Manor.

A visitation for a maximum of 50 people at a time, will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Dixon on Friday, June 4, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a private family

funeral.

STEVEN G. ‘FRED’ STENZEL

OREGON - Steven G. “Fred” Stenzel, 67, of Oregon, peacefully passed away on Monday, May 24, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Steve was born Oct. 29, 1953 in Oregon, the son of Frederick A. and Donna Marie (Moring) Stenzel.

Steve graduated from Oregon High School in 1971. He married Lora Danekas on March 30, 1993 and they had one child, Jeremy Stenzel.

Steve worked for Cain Millwork for over 20 years before becoming self-employed. He enjoyed putting together puzzles and anything to do with the outdoors, such as fishing and hunting, demolition derbies (especially with his son, Jeremy), working in his yard on Brooks Island, hanging out in his garage and having an occasional Bud Light.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Frederick A. Stenzel. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Lora Stenzel of Oregon; his son, Jeremy (Courtney) Stenzel of East Moline; his two sisters, Peggy (Gordy) Olson of Fulton and Penny (Collier) Gerhardt of Liberty, Missouri; his mother, Donna Marie Moring Smith of Lady Lake, Florida; his two grandsons, Jackson and Greyson Stenzel of East Moline; his Aunt Kay and Aunt Sally; his close cousin and friend, Bruce “Noah” (Brenda) Hiscox; several nieces and nephews; and his two closest friends, Roger and Jimmy.

A celebration of life will be held at his residence on Brooks Island on Saturday, July 24 from 4 to 7 p.m.. Friends and family may stop by anytime to share stories and celebrate Steve’s life.

ADELINE - Adam Michael Spittler, 27, of Adeline, passed away Friday, May 21, 2021 in his home, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 26, 1993 in Rockford to Gary and Robin (Prentice) Spittler.

Adam was a truck driver for Buckshot Ridge Farms & Excavating. He was a 2013 graduate of Forreston High School, and studied auto mechanics at Whiteside Area Career Center.

Adam was actively involved in FFA and participated in many activities, but restoring tractors was his favorite.

In 2012, his tractor restoration team made it to compete at the National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Adam played football and baseball. Adam began playing baritone, and tuba in junior high, and later learned how to play the guitar. His love for music was a saving grace through the tough times.

Adam was a blessing from the time he was born; his parents had been patiently awaiting a second child. Through his life, he blessed many others with his presence. He was friends with everyone, and never held a grudge.

He could often be found working on people’s vehicles and lending a hand to anyone in need of help.

Adam had many hobbies, he had a special love for trucks, motorcycles, semis and tractors. He loved snowmobiling, tractor pulling, fishing, and hanging out with his friends.

Adam served on the board of directors for the Silver Creek Museum, and The Antique Engine Club in Freeport.

Adam was diagnosed with Stage 4 testicular cancer in July 2020. He battled every day to beat cancer, enduring brain surgery, several rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and other procedures.

Adam and his family were very hopeful that he would be cured and able to stay on earth, but the Lord had other plans.

Adam is survived by his parents, Gary and Robin Spittler of Adeline; two sisters,

Danialla (Justin Mills) Schreiber of Forreston, and Michelle Spittler of Freeport; brother, Noah Spittler of Adeline; grandfather, Harry B. Prentice; nieces and nephews, Mackenzie, Dyllan, and Jaxson; uncle, Harry (Linda) Prentice; and aunt, Rhonda (Jeremy DeBord) Prentice.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Francis and Janet Spittler; and maternal grandmother, Rita Prentice.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 29 at Leaf River Baptist Church. Burial was at North Grove Evangelical Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Adam’s memory.

FORRESTON - Joel C. Ludwig, 51, of Forreston, passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at FHN Memorial Hospital.

Joel was born November 17, 1969, in Freeport, the son of Stanley and Karen (Johnson) Ludwig. He married Shawnda Spray on Sept. 2, 1989 in Forreston.

Joel was extremely active in his community; he served on the Foundation Board and the School Board for the Forreston School District. He was a member of Forreston Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory. Joel was the Forreston Summer Ball Program Coordinator.

He was also a member of the Forreston Lions Club. He loved attending any Forreston sporting events.

Surviving is his wife, Shawnda Ludwig of Forreston; children, Allison (Fred) Bergman of Chadwick, Samantha Ludwig (Mitchell Harter) of Hobart, Wisconsin, Jacqueline Ludwig, and Joel Ludwig; brother, Matthew Ludwig; sister, Donna (Mike) Johann; and father-in-law, Charles Spray Sr. Joel was preceded in death by his parents, Stan and Karen Ludwig; sister, Gretchen; and mother-in-law, Diana Spray.

Funeral services were Saturday, May 29, at Forreston Reformed Church. Burial was at West Grove Cemetery.

Source of Drinking Water The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity.

Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.

Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.

Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the EPAs Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.

Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population.

Source of Water: OREGONTo determine Oregon's susceptibility to groundwater contamination, information obtained during a Well Site Survey performed by the Illinois Rural Water Association on October 20, 1998 was reviewed. Based on this information, several potential sources of contamination were identified within proximity of this water supply's wells. The Illinois EPA does not consider the city's source water susceptible to contamination. This determination is based on a number of criteria including: monitoring conducted at the wells; monitoring conducted at the entry point to the distribution system; and the available hydrogeologic data on the wells. In anticipation of the U.S. EPA's proposed Ground Water Rule, the Illinois EPA has determined that the water supply is not vulnerable to viral contamination. This determination is based upon the completed evaluation of the following criteria during the Vulnerability Waiver Process: the community's wells are properly constructed with sound integrity and proper site conditions; a hydrogeologic barrier exists that should prevent pathogen movement; all potential routes and sanitary defects have been mitigated such that the source water is adequately protected; monitoring data did not indicate a history of disease outbreak; and a sanitary survey of the water supply did not indicate a viral contamination threat. Because the community's wells are constructed in a confined aquifer, which should minimize the movement of pathogens into the wells, well hydraulics were not considered to be a significant factor in the vulnerability determination. Hence, well hydraulics were not evaluated for this groundwater supply.

The following tables contain scientific terms and measures, some of which may require explanation.

Avg:

Regulatory compliance with some MCLs are based on running annual average of monthly samples.

Level 1 Assessment:

A Level 1 assessment is a study of the water system to identify potential problems and determine (if possible) why total coliform bacteria have been found in our water system.

Level 2 Assessment:

A Level 2 assessment is a very detailed study of the water system to identify potential problems and determine (if possible) why an E. coli MCL violation has occurred and/or why total coliform bacteria have been found in our water system on multiple occasions.

Maximum Contaminant Level or MCL:

The highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology.

Maximum Contaminant Level Goal or MCLG: The level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety.

Maximum residual disinfectant level or MRDL:

The highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants.

Maximum residual disinfectant level goal or MRDLG:

The level of a drinking water disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contaminants.

20 OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following police activity May 18 At 2:51 p.m., deputies along with Monroe Center EMS responded to a two vehicle traffic accident at the intersection of Illinois Rte. 72 and Kilbuck Road. Robert Kesler, 32 of Kirkland, was driving eastbound on Rte. 72 near Kilbuck Road in a Ford Cargo van.

Rachel Sievert, 21 of Davis Junction, was driving behind Kesler in a Nissan Altima.

Kesler was slowing down to allow a vehicle to turn north onto Kilbuck Road from Rte. 72.

Seivert was unable to reduce to speed to avoid colliding with Kesler’s back bumper.

Both vehicles received disabling damage.

Kesler and Sievert were both seen by medical personnel and did not receive any injuries. Sievert was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

At 5:56 p.m., deputies along with Leaf River EMS responded to the intersection of 3rd Street and Main Street in Leaf River for a vehicle vs bicycle accident with minor injuries.

Upon further investigation, it was discovered that an 11-year-old bicyclist was traveling southbound on N Main Street approaching the intersection of 3rd Street.

Monica Spear, 33, of Leaf River, was traveling westbound in a black GMC pickup truck on 3rd Street also approaching the intersection at Main St. It was determined that the juvenile bicyclist entered the intersection before Spear’s vehicle cleared through the intersection, causing a minor collision.

The juvenile was treated for minor injuries on scene by Leaf River EMS. May 20 Ricky Green, 56 of Milwaukee Wisconsin,

was arrested at 1:10 p.m. for driving on a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 7000 block of South Illinois Rte. 2.

He was also issued citations for improper lane usage, failure to signal and expired registration.

Green was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released to Correctional Staff and held in lieu of bond.

May 21 At 5:12 p.m., deputies along with the Lynn Scott Rock Fire Dept. responded to a two-vehicle crash with injuries on I-39 near Mowers Road.

A northbound vehicle driven by Kevin Abbott, 36, of Peoria had stopped in traffic when it was rear ended by a vehicle driven

by James Hopkins, 34, of Elkhorn, Wisconsin.

An adult female passenger in Abbott’s car was transported to the Rochelle Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Hopkins was arrested by deputies for driving while license revoked and held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail. Hopkins was also cited for uninsured motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Justin Williams, 32, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after being stopped on Hwy 251 near Davis Junction for speeding. Williams was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

Tianna R. Cornell, 20 of Tampico, was arrested at 10:35 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 5000 block of N. Illinois Rte. 2.

Cornell was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

She was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and issued a written warning for inoperable rear registration light.

POLO POLICE Polo Police Chief Tim Rockwood reports the following police activity.

May 24 Cade M. Roschi, 19, of Byron, was cited at 7:51 p.m. for speeding, 59 mph in a 35 mph speed zone and for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Roschi was issued an I-Bond.

May 25 Kenneth E. Pearson, Jr, 62, of Polo, was cited at 12:20 p.m. for failure to reduce speed to avoid and accident. Pearson was issued an I-Bond.

May 23 Alejandrino Hernandez, 27, of Dekalb was arrested for driving without a valid license on Rte. 64 near Chamberlain Road after being stopped for speeding.

Hernandez was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

May 24 Javier Rodriguez, 23 of Waukegan, was arrested at 8:47 p.m. for no valid driver’s license following a traffic stop in the 11000 block of W. Illinois Rte. 72.

He was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and illegal window tint. Rodriguez was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

May 26 Debora L. Waters, 43, of Davis Junction, was arrested at 5:44 p.m. for driving on a suspended license following a traffic stop in the 10,000 block of E. Illinois Rte. 72. Waters was also issued a citation for speeding.

She was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was released to Correctional Staff and held in lieu of bond.

May 28 At approximately 7 p.m., deputies responded to an address in the 100 block of South Maple St in Stillman Valley in reference to a domestic problem. Corey Kelchner, 36, of Stillman Valley, was arrested for domestic battery.

Kelchner was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was being held pending an appearance before a judge.

May 29 Kayla Boyenga, 31 of Dixon, was arrested at 12:34 a.m. for possession of a controlled substance (crack/cocaine), possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 2000 block of N. Illinois Rte 2.

Boyenga was also issued citations for improper lane usage and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

She was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

James M. Love, 33, of Rockford, was arrested at 11:30 a.m. for driving on a suspended license following a traffic stop on E Illinois Rte. 64 at Interstate 39.

Love was also issued a citation for speed.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released to Correctional Staff and held in lieu of bond.

At approximately 10:40 p.m. deputies

investigated a domestic problem in the 2000 block of North Freeport Road. Matthew Strohecker, 27, of Freeport, was arrested for aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Strohecker was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held pending an appearance before a judge.

At approximately 9:18 p.m., deputies responded to the 11000 block of E. Fisher Road in reference to a possible accident in that area.

After an investigation, it was determined that Leonel Torres-Meza, 38, of Rochelle struck a parked vehicle that was unoccupied in a driveway.

Torres-Meza was subsequently arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and issued citations for leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report a vehicle accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane usage.

Torres-Meza was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

Ivan Lugo-Tellez, 39, of Des Moines, Iowa was arrested at 8:40 p.m. for no valid drivers license following a traffic stop on I88 at mile marker 77 eastbound. He was also cited for no insurance and unlawful transportation of alcohol. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

May 30 Kiernan Jacobson, 21, of Rockford was arrested for driving while license suspended on I-39 near Monroe Center after being stopped for speeding. He was held in lieu of bond at the jail.

Alexis D. Cantrell, 22 of Chana, was arrested at 12:04 a.m. for driving on a suspended license following a traffic stop in the area of 1000 E. Illinois Rte. 64 for an equipment violation. Cantrell was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. Cantrell was also cited for not having a registration light.

Bentley Grell, 24, of Sterling was arrested at 5:16 p.m. for unlawful possession of cannabis in a motor vehicle and unlawful possession of cannabis 30-100 grams following a traffic stop in the 3000 block of South Freeport Road.

A passenger in the vehicle, Andres Arellano, 24, of El Paso, Texas was arrested for unlawful possession of cannabis in a motor vehicle. Grell and Arellano were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.
