Display to honor firefighters lost in 2021 Karen Davis will decorate her fence with a glow stick for every firefighter who died in the line of duty this year

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – On New Year’s Eve, one woman’s fence will bear more than 130 red glow sticks in honor of firefighters who died in the line of duty this year.

Karen “Kitten” Davis, a former firefighter and EMT, will keep an eye on the death tally until 11:55 p.m., at which point she’ll add any additional glow sticks needed to her fence before making a toast.

“At midnight, we make a toast and we pour it on the ground,” she said. “Then I do a final call-out.”

On Jan. 1, Davis will add glow sticks for any firefighters who die on New Year’s Eve. The glow sticks will be left out for twoto three days until their light dies out – a process that resembles life, she said.

Davis did the same thing at the end of 2020, but in remembrance of fallen police officers.

“I can only support them,” said Davis, who suffered a back injury in 2020 that

forced her to take a sabbatical.

She had decided to honor firefighters this year prior to the death of Sterling Fire Department Capt. Garrett Ramos.

Ramos, 38, died fighting a house fire in rural Rock Falls that broke out on Dec. 3, just before midnight. The floor gave out and Ramos fell into the basement.

An exact cause of death is pending.

Ramos is the first firefighter to die in the line of duty in the department’s history.

“It made it even more fitting to do firefighters this year,” Davis said.

Everyone is welcome to come by on Dec. 31, she said. People should feel free to drive by, or park and get a closer view of the memorial.

Davis said she will have some extra fire pits going on Dec. 31 for people who want to park.

“Since we did lose [one of] our own, somebody might want to come out and hang one on the fence themselves, and they’re more than welcome to do that,” she said. “If they want to come over and stop and talk about their hero, they’re more than welcome to.”

She won’t approach anyone who does stop, instead respecting that they might need space, Davis said. That said, passers-by are welcome to approach her, she said.

ehinton@oglecountynews.com OREGON – Joe Miller stood in the back of the 20-foot U-Haul truck late last Friday afternoon trying to figure where to put the case of mouthwash.

“OK here’s a spot for that, and I still have some room at the top,” he said, tossing three six packs of toilet paper to the top of the stack.

“Don’t forget the Christmas items,” said Monica, Joe’s wife.

The Millers, owners and operators of Kneez in the Breeze, a new thrift shop in downtown Oregon, started collecting items to take to Princeton, Kentucky, one of the communities hit by the Dec. 10 tornadoes that devastated communities in Western Kentucky and killed 77 residents.

Joe and Monica have friends from that area and wanted to do something to help survivors of the deadly twisters.

So, the Millers, along with some help from their motorcycle riding club, started asking for donations of clothing, food and hygiene items with the idea of getting in their SUV and pulling a trailer down to Kentucky.

Guided by a list of desired items from the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, the Millers reached out to friends and businesses for donations.

“The response has been tremendous,” Monica said. “We had several businesses also make donations.”

On Tuesday, the number of donations had already surpassed the capacity of their trailer. “We knew we needed a box truck,” Joe said.

stepped up to that challenge and donated a 20-foot U-Haul for the Millers to use. “Scott and Amanda at Snyder’s let us use the truck,” Monica said.

“That was very nice.”

More donations came in throughout the week to Kneez in the Breeze, 215 W. Washington. “We’ve been here every night till 10 with a steady stream of people bring in donations,” Joe said.

The chore of loading the truck started midday on Friday.

“We began loading at noon today and people kept showing up with donations,” said Stevie Miller, of Janesville, Wisconsin, Joe’s brother. “He (Joe) called me so I came down to help.”

With about five helpers, including Paula Nally, a vendor for the Millers’ store, the truck was filled with everything from baby formula to bottled water to bags of clothing and even several pairs of brand new memory foam slippers.

“Paula helped pick up some of the donations and drove all over, even to the Chicago area, to bring everything back here for us to take down,” said Monica about Paula’s effort.

“Pet Supplies’ warehouse donated an entire pallet of dog food,” Joe said.

“We only had room for about half of it on this trip. We will take the rest down on the net trip.”

With the truck loaded to the brim, Joe and Monica headed south around 4 p.m. Joe estimated the trip would be at least seven hours.

“We’ve had people stop and give us cash for gas which will be very helpful,” he said. “We’re planning on making more than one trip.”

Resident calls for school board member to resign DUI arrest prompts Mt. Morris resident to call for Guzman’s resignation

ehinton@oglecountynews.com OREGON – Oregon School Board member Michael Guzman said he will not resign following an arrest for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

“Maybe you are a perfect, but I am not,” said Guzman, responding to Chris Corcoran, of Mt. Morris, who asked for the resignation Monday night during the board’s public comment period. “I will not be resigning from anything.”

Corcoran called for Guzman’s resigna-

tion saying the charges put a “black mark” on the school district.

“It sends a bad message for our children,” Corcoran said. “Of course, he’s innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. I don’t think he should be on the board. I think he should resign.”

Guzman waited to respond to Corcoran’s comments until the “other matters” portion of the meeting.

“To use a public platform to make a statement like that about someone who you have never met before and say that person is a terrible person and is not a good role model for children in this district irritates me enough to respond,” Guzman said. “Maybe you are perfect, but I am not. I’ve made mistakes in my life and I’ve made poor choices and when I have I have learned from them and I’ve come back a better man.”

He also said he had recently helped

feed 25 families in the elementary school and dropped off gifts to 24 children on Monday for Christmas.

“So my response would be we are different people when somebody’s down and maybe at a low spot you will always find me there helping them,” Guzman said.

According to information provided by the Oregon Police Department, Guzman, 36, of Oregon, was arrested at 10:23 p.m.

Dec. 9 for driving while under the influence of alcohol near the intersection of Fifth and Gale Streets in Oregon. He was also issued citations for improper lane use and illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver and transported to the Ogle County Jail.

According to court documents, Guzman posted $100 and his driver’s license as bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 14.

Byron teacher dies from COVID-19 complications

azoellner@shawmedia.com BYRON – A Byron Middle School special education teacher died from COVID-19-related pneumonia, according to a family friend.

Jane A. Jones, 44, died Dec. 14, six days after beginning to show symptoms of COVID-19, according to a GoFundMe post by family friend Jon Gabrielse.

“Mrs. Jones has made a lasting impression on many students, staff,

and community members during her time in the district,” Byron Community School District Superintendent Buster Barton wrote in a Dec. 14 email to families. “Her presence will be deeply missed by many in the Byron School District and throughout the Byron community. The Byron Community School District is mourning.”

Jane Jones left behind her husband, Ryan Jones, and three children: Oliver, Estelle and Meredith.

“She has made a huge impact in so many lives and she was the glue, along

with her kids, that helped Ryan through his tragic accident,” Gabrielse wrote.

Ryan Jones was hit by a car while crossing a street in Milwaukee in June, Gabrielse wrote. He spent 51 days in the hospital, had numerous surgeries and currently spends threeto six hours a day in therapy.

While Ryan Jones is home and progressing well – he recently began walking again – he still has a long road ahead, including more surgeries, Gabrielse wrote.

Gabrielse set a $40,000 goal on GoFundMe. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than $39,500 had been raised.

The funds will go to Ryan Jones to help cover funeral costs and his continued medical treatment.

According to Jane Jones’ obituary on Farrell Holland Gale Funeral Home’s website, a scholarship fund at Byron High School is set to be established in her name. Donations to that fund, or memorials to Kathy’s House, in Milwaukee, can be made in lieu of flowers.

ZBA findings to go to committee, then full board

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – Ogle County Board members on Tuesday added a step to the process of approving zoning amendments and special-use permits in an effort to improve oversight and clarity.

The Zoning Board of Appeals now will report its findings and recommendations to the Supervisor of Assessments and Planning and Zoning Committee instead of sending them directly to the full county board. The committee will send its recommendations along with the

ZBA’s findings and vote and the Regional Planning Commission’s vote to the full board.

“This isn’t really affecting anything that gets approved by the ZBA,” board member Ben Youman said. “We’ve had a number of instances on clarity of what’s been done and sending things back multiple times. This is just to give the information back to the county board so there’s more information behind it, like there was before.”

Youman, a member of the Planning and Zoning Committee, said the committee’s intent is to “enhance the process” so

the ZBA’s vote is clear, the Regional Planning Commission’s vote is clear and the county board has enough information to make informed decisions.

County board members voted 15-8 to repeal the 2018 ordinance that had originally removed the Planning and Zoning Committee’s oversight of zoning matters.

That vote followed a 12-11 vote to amend the ordinance presented at the Dec. 21 meeting. The amendment removed directions for the Planning and Zoning Committee to vote on their recommendations before sending all the information to the full county board.

Parent asks board to stop verbal ‘abuse’ by coaches

ehinton@oglecountynews.com OREGON – A parent of a senior basketball player asked the Oregon School Board on Monday to hold coaches to the same standard as teachers and not allow abusive or insulting comments.

Seth Gelander of Oregon told the board that his son, Joey a senior, had recently quit the basketball program because of degrading comments made by the head coach about the team’s performance.

“Once he [Joey] explained all of the issues to us, it became clear that he needed to remove himself from that toxic relationship,” Gelander said. “Was this hard coaching or is this bullying? What would you do if your coach, teacher, boss or employer insulted you on a daily basis? How would you react if you received consistent degrading comments?”

Gelander claimed that head coach Nathan Green, a second-year coach who is employed outside the

district, used profanity on multiple occasions telling team members they were “the worst ... team in the conference” and were “soft” and “didn’t care about losing.”

Gelander said when he and his wife met with Green following an incident during summer league, Green did not report the incident to the athletic director as required by school policy.

“In other words, the process as outlined did not work for the victim in this event,” Gelander said in a written statement he read to the board during the public comment portion of Monday’s meeting.

He said his son decided to “give up the sport he loves” in order to maintain a “healthy mental status and move forward free of abuse.”

“While it is likely too late for our son Joey and his teammates, we ask that you work to prevent this poor experience from haunting future athletes,” Gelander said.

100-year-old doll to join Aplington House collection

C

hristmas of 2021 is here. Perhaps all the shopping is finished and maybe your house is all decorated.

I love to sit and look out the window at the outdoor decorations around me.

Christmas has always been the best part of the year for our family and soon we will all be together.

How many of you purchased a doll this year for someone? I have always loved dolls and I was lucky enough to be given several dolls from my elderly cousin who collected dolls.

A 3-foot doll from the past now stands near the front door at Aplington House wearing a small child’s dress that belonged to Helen Bentley.

This was a doll from my Cousin Esther’s collection.

We also have several dolls that Annabelle Muench had as she grew up. The last of her dolls was over in Byron at Joann’s Dolls being restored.

She needed her wig put back on and her shoes needed to be repaired.

A few weeks ago, Linda and I went to Byron with our antique dolls to be restored. Linda had a Madam Alexander doll and I had Annabelle’s Horseman doll. Joann’s place is always interesting and I have been there

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf before. Soon she will be closing and I will miss her. Joan is an authority on dolls and she also is part of the Rockford Doll Club.

If you remember, they placed two original antique China head dolls at Aplington House since the ones we had were reproductions. The doll club felt Aplington House certainly needed to have original dolls that were authentic especially since one sat on the Lincoln Sofa. We thank them for that.

This week I picked our dolls up at Byron and Joann filled me in on Annabelle’s doll. It is a 19-inch Horseman doll made around 1927. She has a cloth body with composition head, arms and legs. Her eyes open and close and she does not have on her original outfit.

Joann is looking for an original outfit but she really looks fine. Someone made her a new outfit. On the back of her neck it says: E I H Inc.

Linda has been researching her and the company that made her. The first “all American doll” was made by Goodyear Rubber in 1856. Edward I. Horseman became a businessman in New York in 1865. He was from a German toy making family. He sold toys and games very successfully and he started importing parts of dolls from Germany.

His son Edward, Jr. joined his father in the early 1900s and they started working with other companies on composition material.

Their early dolls had cloth bodies with composition head, arms and legs.

Eventually Horseman had an all composition doll but Annabelle’s doll is one of the early ones with a cloth body.

She is in fairly good shape for someone almost 100 years old and will be at Aplington House, maybe sitting on Annabelle’s little oak rocker.

Right now the doll is sitting beside my Christmas tree until I can get over to Aplington House. I will take her to Aplington House before all my greatgrandchildren arrive since she is not a doll to be carried around by a small child.

“The community’s response when asked to help was so incredible that we not only met the goal of honoring all veterans at Daysville but have also been credited with wreaths for next year,” said Laurie Perry, regent of the Rochelle Chapter of the DAR who spoke at the afternoon event.

Born: October 25, 1948 in Rockford Died: December 15, 2021 in Polo Larry F. Jenkins, 73, of Forreston, died Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at Polo Rehab and Health Care Center. Larry was born October 25, 1948, in Rockford, the son of Floyd and Hortense (Faulkner) Jenkins. Larry worked for Kable News in Mt. Morris, White Pines State Park in The Lodge, and Lake

LaDonna. He was a member of Forreston Reformed Church. He was a Webelo Scout Leader and very active in Boy Scouts. He enjoyed riding his motor scooter and bicycle to visit friends. Surviving is his step-cousins, Jim Ludwig, Duane Ludwig, Cindy Tigges, Tom Ludwig, Jerry Ludwig, and Joan Culver. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Linda; and stepfather, Ed Ludwig. Lila Darlene Knie Over the years, Lila and Larry would travel to (née Sanford), age 93 Texas or Illinois, visiting friends and family passed away Sunday, in their motorhome. Dogs, cats, accordions, December 19, 2021 at Polo Rehabilitation and fiddles, and laughs in tow, they would spend the summer weeks traveling and sharing Health Care Center.

Dave was always involved in his children’s activities, coaching and attending all their games and events. He was very proud of their accomplishments.

Dave worked in the printing departments of Kable Printing, Alpha Omega Printing, and Donnelly printing in Mendota. While serving in the National Guard, his unit was sent to Desert Storm and was involved in Desert Shield.

Following his retirement Dave enjoyed training his two Border Collies in agility. He and Sylvia attended many weekends of agility trials. Due to Dave’s training and patience and two smart Border Collies, Tess and Buddy, the blue ribbons began to pile up.

Services were held Thursday, December 23, 2021 in the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren. Burial was in Silver Creek Cemetery, Mt. Morris, IL.

Scouts from Troop 81 in Oregon helped place the wreaths and Troop 289 Girl Scouts gave the Pledge of Allegiance to open Saturday’s event.

National Wreaths Across America Day was held at 3,136 participating locations across the country.

More than 525 truckloads of wreaths were delivered and placed on 2.4 million veterans’ headstones.

According to a news release from Wreaths Across America: “Each live, balsam veteran’s wreath was a gift of respect and appreciation, sponsored by an individual or organization and placed on a headstone by volunteers as a small gesture of gratitude for the freedoms Americans enjoy. For centuries, fresh evergreens have been used as a symbol of honor and have served as a living tribute renewed annually.

Wreaths Across America believes the tradition represents a living memorial that honors veterans, active-duty military and their families.”

10 SPORTS ROUNDUP Girls Basketball Oregon 40, Newman 28: The Oregon girls basketball team pitched a shutout in the third quarter of the fifth-place game at the Polo Holiday Tournament against Newman on Dec. 14, defeating the Comets 40-28.

Newman (1-7) trailed 9-8 after the opening eight minutes, then led 18-16 at halftime, but did not score in the third period before matching Oregon’s 10-point fourth period.

Jess Johns finished with 15 points to lead the Comets, while Shannon Kelly and Monica Healy scored four points apiece, and Madison Duhon hit a 3-pointer.

Hadley Lutz had 14 points for the Hawks, with Ava Hackman and Kelsi Morris adding eight points each, Teagan Champley scoring six, and Katelyn Bowers finishing with four.

Hackman hit a pair of 3s for Oregon, which outscored Newman 14-0 in the third.

College Volleyball The Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball team finished second in the country last Saturday night, falling to Big Ten rival Wisconsin 3-2 in the NCAA Tournament National Championship game in Columbus, Ohio.

Sterling native Lexi Rodriguez, the National Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-American who starts at libero for the Huskers, finished with 13 digs and four assists in the match, which saw Nebraska nearly rally from a seven-point deficit in the final game before Wisconsin (43-3) pulled out a 22-25, 31-29, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12 victory.

Oregon Wrestling

injury and illness and sent a skeleton team to a skeleton Stillman Valley Holiday Tournament on Dec. 18.

Seven Hawk wrestlers participated and six made it to the medal round, one winning his final match.

The Hawks were led by Anthony Bauer and Gabe Eckerd who finished second at 145 and 160 pounds. Ethan George took the bronze medal at 170. Jared Glendenning placed fourth at 138 and Briggs Sellers was fourth at 285.

Jackson Glendenning was sixth at 152, and Seth Rote represented the Hawks at 195.

Oregon finished seventh as a team with 70 points, well back of champion Dundee Crown. Princeton, Stillman Valley, Marengo, and Wheaton Academy rounded out the top five, all with more than 100 points.

Bauer had a bye to the semifinal where he trailed 7-0 when he caught a throw and pinned at 4:34. In the first place match, he fought off his back twice before he was pinned in a half nelson at 2:31.

Eckerd had four sets of backpoints before he turned with a double chicken wing and pinned with a half nelson at 3:30 in his opener. In the semifinal, he scored a

takedown in a cradle in 36 seconds. In the championship, Eckerd was in a scoreless tie when he was taken to his back in a half nelson thirty seconds into the third period.

George got a bye to the semifinal where he lost a 14-5 major decision, dropping him to the third place match. For the medal, George led by two when he hooked up a crook and pinned at 3:20. Jared Glendenning started with a bye and lost an 8-0 major decision in the semifinal. In the third place match, he gave up a first period takedown and an escape late in the second in a hard fought 3-0 loss.

Sellers reversed off his back to pin at 3:46 in his opener and was pinned in a butcher at 2:08 in the semifinal. In the third place match, he went to overtime tied at one and gave up an escape midway through the third tiebreaker to go down to a tough 2-1 loss.

Jackson Glendenning lost a takedown to his back at 4:24 in the quarterfinal and got a bye to the fifth place match, where he was switched into a cradle at 2:30. Rote was driven to his back in a half nelson at 3:47 in his opener and dropped from the competition in the first round of consolation in a half nelson in 51 seconds.

Meanwhile, my high school sports attendance has been relatively dormant.

I did make an effort to take in an Oregon boys game Saturday night, but not enough varsity players were available due to COVID-19.

Actually, I was more interested in seeing what South Beloit had, as the SoBos are state ranked in 1A with a star 6-foot-7 freshman and a 6-5, 300pound center.

The girls did get in a varsity game against a weak South Beloit squad and came away with a resounding victory to move to a 5-10 record.

That’s a lot of games for this early in the season. Compare that to Forreston boys with only three games played, which is partially attributable to the Dec. 7-17 period of remote learning.

Traditionally, the Cardinals opt out of Thanksgiving tourneys because of football, as do other grid powers such

as Byron and Stillman.

What about the Polo boys? They played football until the week before Thanksgiving, but still continue to participate in the AFC tournament.

The Marcos have got a dozen games in, including an impromptu four-team mini-tourney last week with Pec, Newman and Le-Win. That’s creative scheduling to fill the void left by the canceled Forreston event.

Beloved Oregon trainer John Cain underwent surgery this week and appreciated all the thoughts and prayers.

John has fought many health battles during his tenure at Oregon and rarely lets it interfere with the long hours plied at the school.

A good trainer is a blessing and what John does for Oregon is greatly appreciated. Some schools do not have

the luxury of a full-time trainer, especially with the nation’s labor shortage.

That shortage has even translated into the coaching field. Individuals not employed within the school district continue to fill more and more positions.

When I was in high school, I don’t remember any outsiders holding coaching positions. There is such an advantage of having coaches in house.

Additionally, there is not as large of pool of candidates, be it in the school or from the outside.

The large-scale interest is not there, as evidenced by the Illinois high school football coaching clinic having 50 percent of the registrants compared to several years ago.

With all hours required, why would anyone want to coach?

Because teaching, encouraging and developing relationships with young people can be exceedingly rewarding.

Winning makes it all the more palatable.

Earlier this fall, the IHSA conducted a “Pork and Pigskins” championship to determine the best concession grilled pork sandwich.

After breaking the 80 contestants

into a Flavorful Four of Cambridge, Carlinville, Lemont and Normal, Normal won out in a vote among 100,000 ballots.

Their concession stand received a state championship banner, a golden spatula and $500; plus, the pride of being labeled best pork in Illinois.

Did you know that the IHSA boys basketball tournament is returning to Champaign after a 25-year run in Peoria?

The other big change is that the 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A tournament will be on one instead of two separate weekends.

The same applies for the girls tourney, which continues a 30-year run at ISU. The major difference is games being played Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with finals in all classes on Saturday.

With declining attendance, the IHSA hopes this create more excitement.

Recycle your live Christmas tree after the holidays

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will once again partner with units of local government and certain high school Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapters to conduct the annual Christmas tree collection and recycling program.

Since the program began in 1999, there have been over 15,500 trees collected, with trees averaging around 50 pounds each, that equates to about 385 tons of tree material which were all turned into usable mulch.

Starting on Dec. 26, these cities and villages will have drop-off points: Oregon: Park District Maintenance Dept., 507 Hill St. Byron: Byron boat launch lot, E. Blackhawk Dr. (Route 2) Forreston: 407 N. Locust St. Leaf River: 605 Main St. Rochelle: Atwood Park, 10th Ave. and 20th St. Monroe Center: Lichty’s Landscaping, 309 Pacific St. Polo: Southwest corner of East

Colden Street and South Green Avenue.

On Saturday, Jan. 8, local FFA chapters will provide curbside pickup for trees.

Remove all decorations, lights, plastic bags, and place your tree at your curb by 8 a.m. This pickup service will be offered in Byron, Forreston, Leaf River, Mount Morris, Oregon and Polo.

For Rochelle residents, the Rochelle Street Department will mulch trees at the curb during the first two weeks of January, weather permitting.

All trees should be free of light strands, garland and other decorations. No wreaths or other designs with wire backings and no artificial trees. Drop-off ends Jan. 23.

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office is participating in a statewide impaired driving awareness campaign from Dec. 17 to Jan. 3.

“Driving impaired, whether under the influence of alcohol or drugs, can have catastrophic consequences and is illegal in every state” Sheriff Brian VanVickle said. “Not only do you put yourself at risk, but the lives of others as well.”

If a celebration will involve alcohol or other impairing

substances, please plan ahead for a sober ride home and remember to buckle up – it’s the best defense against an impaired driver, VanVickle said.

Keep these tips in mind to help ensure a safe and joyful holiday season: • Before heading to the party, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride-sharing service to get home safely.

• If you see an impaired driver on the road, pull over and

call the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office to report the vehicle at 815-732-2136 (non-emergency) or 911 if an emergency.

• Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take their keys and help them get home safely.

• Always buckle up!

The holiday enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville reports the following police activity.

Dec. 13 Lynette M. Chmelik, 58, of Aurora, was issued a traffic citation at 11:32 p.m. for improper lane use. This violation occurred in the 500 block of W. Washington Street.

Dec. 15 Lucas A. Sorensen, 20, of Coralville, Iowa, was issued a traffic citation at 8:33 p.m. for speeding, 47 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of North Fourth Street.

Dec. 17 Kevin A. Kost, 27, of Batavia, was

POLO POLICE issued a citation at 7:07 p.m. for operating a vehicle with an expired registration. This violation occurred in the 100 block of South Third Street.

Dec. 18 Luis A. Xique, 17, of Dixon, was issued citations at 1:04 a.m. for no valid driver’s license, fleeing to elude police, disobeying a traffic control device, and unlawful concealment of registration.

Two male juveniles of Dixon, both age 17; and one male juvenile, age 15, of Dixon, were taken into limited custody for violating the curfew ordinance and subsequently released into a parent or guardian’s custody.

These violations occurred beginning at 10th and Adams Streets.

Dec. 19 Debra A. Jordal, 63, of Chana, was issued a citation at 10:18 a.m. for speeding, 60 mph in a 35 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

At 8:45 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 500 block of South Fifth Street resulting in the arrest of Jerry E. Williamson, 51, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Williamson was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Two parking tickets and four verbal warnings issued Dec. 13-19.

‘Lacy’s Christmas Do-Over’ is available on Pluto TV

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON – A made-for-TV movie shot in Oregon premiered Dec. 11 on Pop TV. “Lacy’s Christmas Do-Over” was filmed between Feb. 26 and March 1 at the former Pinehill Inn Bed & Breakfast and Sinnissippi Tree Farm & Forest.

The area has “breathtakingly beautiful scenery” just about everywhere, film director and cinematographer Ari Golan said. It was something the crew was happy to make use of, he said.

“It was really a pleasure shooting in Oregon,” Golan said. “Everybody was very enthusiastic and helpful and friendly – a lot more than what you run into in an urban center.”

Pinehill Bed and Breakfast in Oregon hosted a Christmas-themed movie shoot over the weekend of Feb. 27-28.

Illinois at the advice of a new therapist only to find herself stuck in a mystical, small Christmas town living the same day over and over. She must figure out how to escape.

Oregon Mayor and former Pinehill owner Ken Williams said he enjoyed getting to watch many of the scenes being shot.

“I’ve seen so much of it already that I just want to see it all put together,”

Williams said. “But I’ve seen most of the pieces.”

Williams sold Pinehill in November. The new owners do not plan on operating the property as a B&B, he said.

A site scout originally contacted him to discuss using one of the hallways in Pinehill, Williams said. But, after the scouts and production team members visited in person, they

decided to spend more time there.

Most of the space at Pinehill was used for something, be it costume and makeup or equipment storage, he said.

Even the barn and carriage house were used for filming, Williams said.

Golan and some of the actors also stayed at the B&B during the shoot, he said.

Williams and his wife, Chris Williams, ended up working with set decorators. Chris Williams was credited in the movie as one of the set decorators; Williams received a special “thank you,” according to IMDb. “We brought our Christmas decorations back in and said, ‘Choose what you want,’” Williams recalled.

Oregon citizens were curious and often drove by to see what was going on – and why Pinehill had its Christmas decorations back up – but no one bothered the cast and crew during filming, he said.

“I encourage everyone to check out the movie,” Williams said. “It’s very local. … There’s a lot of local flavor in the whole film.”

14 OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: Dec. 12 Victor Jaimes, 23, of Rochelle, was arrested at 4:08 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies stopped him in the 4000 block of Illinois Route 251.

Jaimes also was cited for disregarding a stop sign and expired registration. Jaimes was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 14 Tina M. Eiseman, 54, of Freeport, was arrested 17 7:05 p.m. for driving while license revoked and improper container of cannabis/driver after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 9000 block of North Baileyville Road. Eiseman also was cited for an inoperable registration light. Eisemen was taken into custody without incident and released on a notice to appear.

A 16-year-old male juvenile of Streator, Illinois, was arrested at 7:23 p.m. for no valid license after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 near mile-marker 107.

The juvenile also was cited for an inoperable registration light. The juvenile was taken into custody without incident and released on an I-Bond.

Dec. 15 Christopher Reed, 27, of Ashton, was arrested at 12:09 p.m. for driving while license revoked after deputies stopped him in the Walmart parking lot in Rochelle. Reed was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 16 Malerie Busche, 26, of Byron, was cited at 1:51 p.m. for driving while license suspended, operating an uninsured vehicle and an expired registration after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 300 block of Main Street in Forreston. Busche was released on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

About 9:35 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile-marker 99 on a 2010 Chrysler Sebring driven by Elijah Hansen, 23, of Rockford, for a registration violation.

During the stop, deputies advised Hansen of an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Hansen then drove away. Deputies deployed STOP sticks 5 miles from the original stop and were able to take Hansen into custody.

Hansen was charged with aggravated fleeing to elude police, driving on a revoked license and no license. Hansen also was cited for improper display of registration and failure to apply for damaged plates. Hansen also

had two arrest warrants from Rockford police for criminal damage to property and aggravated fleeing to elude police. Hansen was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 17 Damarcus Belcher, 26, of Rockford, was arrested at 3:14 a.m. for driving while license suspended and cited for no rear registration light after deputies conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 2 and Ashelford Drive. Belcher was released on an I-Bond. A passenger in the vehicle, Courtney Delgado, 27, of Rockford, was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol.

Deputies responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of North Freeport Road and W. West Grove Road about 6:43 p.m. After an investigation, it was found that a Mitsubishi Montero driven by Angelica R. Cornwell, 26, of Clinton, Iowa, was traveling north on North Freeport Road, crossed over the double-solid center yellow line and struck a Hyundai Kona that was southbound.

After striking the Hyundai, Cornwell’s vehicle continued into the southbound ditch, overturned and struck a utility pole before coming to rest on its passenger side. The Hyundai continued southbound and lost

control entering the southbound ditch. The driver of the Hyundai suffered no apparent injuries. Cornwell and a male juvenile of Cornwell’s vehicle were transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Cornwell was cited for improper lane use and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Dec. 18 About 2:01 a.m., deputies located a single-vehicle crash with injuries at the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and Illinois Route 26. After an investigation, it was found that a Dodge Ram 1500 driven by Dilon L. Berg, 30, of Freeport, was traveling west on Route 64 when Berg disregarded the stop sign at the intersection of Route 26 and traveled off the roadway. Berg continued for about 100 yards and struck an embankment, totaling the truck.

Berg suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Berg was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and violation of the FOID Card Act. Berg also was cited for expired driver’s license (less than one year), failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and disobeying a stop sign. Berg was released on a $3,000/10% I-Bond.
