MT. MORRIS — Mt. Morris trustees have voted to lock in an electricity rate for the wastewater treatment plant six months prior to the end of the village’s current contract.

“We could work on this actually in April, but I’m just concerned about energy and the energy crisis and the rates and that,” said Mike Mudge, co-owner of Rock River Energy Services who made a presentation to the board Nov. 23. “We’ve got a pretty decent rate right now from our bids from eight different suppliers.”

Trustees voted unanimously to contract with Constellation at a rate of 5.216 cents per kilowatt-hour for three years starting in May 2022. The contract covers the electrical usage at Mt. Morris’ wastewater treatment plant, wells and lift stations.

Loaves & Fish Food Pantry will be giving out warm hats, scarves and gloves as well as some toys and household items during the month of December.

“The last time we locked in at 4.739 cents [per kWh],” Mudge told trustees. “That’s a nice rate. I think that’s about as low as we’ve gotten it ever.”

Dynegy Energy was the next lowest bid at 5.229 cents per kWh for a three-year contract.

Water and Sewer Trustee Jeff Pennington said he doesn’t see energy costs going down anytime soon.

“I would actually recommend taking that increase on and signing another threeyear contract with Constellation,” Pennington said. “Like he [Mudge] is talking about, with the new plants and the uncertainty of where that’s going in the future, I think that we’re going to see the costs of electricity and gas go up. I don’t see it ever

going down.

“When you’re talking about this kind of volume, this much electricity, I think $5,000 over the course of a year annually, I don’t see that being an issue,” he added.

Trustees also considered signing a contract for electricity for the village’s street lights, but decided to hold off until spring to sign a new contract, per Mudge’s recommendation.

There were four bids for the street lights, the lowest two of which were submitted by ComEd and Constellation.

Constellation’s rate would save the village only about $150 per year when compared with the ComEd rate, Mudge said.

Rock River Energy Services helps customers get the best energy rates, Mudge said after the meeting. The company has worked with Mt. Morris for many years, he said.

In December the pantry is open Monday, Dec. 2 from 4:30 -7 p.m., Dec. 13 from 2-4:30 p.m., Dec. 16 from 4:30-7 p.m. and Dec. 27 from 2-4:30 p.m.

If you do not need to shop for other grocery items, you are still welcome to come and pick up

a ham and some winter accessories.

Fire officials launch ‘Keep the Wreath Red’ program

Mt. Morris Fire Chief Did you know an average of more than 1,000 home fires a year start when Christmas trees or holiday decorations are ignited?

These fires caused an estimated annual average of 25 civilian deaths, 60 civilian injuries and $30 million in direct property damage.

Again this holiday season the Mt. Morris Fire Protection District will be participating in the statewide safety program “Keep the Wreath Red”.

The program is very simple, a wreath has been placed on the front of the Mt. Morris Firehouse. The wreath is covered in red bulbs. If a fire occurs during the holiday season caused by holiday decorations, a bulb will be changed to white.

So far Mt. Morris hasn’t had to change a bulb to white since this program was started in 2004. If you follow some of the fire safety tips listed below the wreath will be kept red all season!

Holiday Decorating Safety Tips Use caution with holiday decorations

and whenever possible, choose those made with flame-resistant, flame-retardant or non-combustible materials.

Natural Christmas trees always involve some risk of fire. To minimize the risk, get a fresh tree and keep it watered at all times.

Do not put the tree within three feet of a fireplace, space heater, radiator, or heat vent.

Decorate with children in mind. Do not put ornaments that have small parts or metal hooks, or look like food or candy, on the lower branches where small children can reach them. Trim protruding branches at or below a child’s eye level.

Do not burn Christmas tree branches, treated wood, or wrapping paper in a home fireplace or woodstove.

Purchase only lights and electrical decorations bearing the name of an independent testing lab, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and maintenance.

Carefully inspect new and previously used light strings and replace damaged items before plugging lights in. Do not overload extension cords, instead use a rated power strip and do not run an electri-

cal cord under a rug Check your strands of lights to determine the number of strands that may be connected.

Connect no more than three strands of push-in type bulbs together. A maximum of 50 total bulbs of the larger screw-in type bulbs.

Always unplug lights before replacing light bulbs or fuses.

Don’t mount lights in any way that can damage the cord’s wire insulation (i.e., using clips, not nails).

Keep children and pets away from light strings and electrical decorations.

Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.

Keep candles away from decorations and other combustible materials and never leave candles unattended. 41% of holiday fires are started by a candle. Most importantly do not use candles to decorate Christmas trees in any way.

Last but certainly not least, Test your smoke alarms, have one on each floor of your home and have a fire escape plan and practice it.

New this year: lighted parade, chicken and biscuit lunch

azoellner@shawmedia.com FORRESTON – Forreston residents have the chance to kick off the holiday season with hometown festivities this weekend.

Christmas in the Country takes place Friday-Saturday, Dec. 3-4, in and around Memorial Park and the downtown area. Most of the events are on Friday.

“I think it’s just a great atmosphere to start off the holiday season,” Christmas in the Country committee member Jane Koeller said. “To be able to get out and see your friends and neighbors, not only supporting the town, but the businesses are open till 8 p.m.

“Maybe you’re not able to get to them at the normal business hours, so this gives you the opportunity to see what else Forreston has to offer,” she said.

There are several new activities this year, including a chicken and biscuit lunch and a lighted parade.

The lunch, which is sponsored by the Forreston Lions Club, takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.

The Light Up Santa Parade is set for Friday at 5:30 p.m. Participation is free and registration is due the day of the event.

“We wanted kids to be able to walk in it or ride bikes or pull wagons,” Koeller said.

The parade will start at the intersection of South Ash Avenue and East Cherry Street. Participants will travel west on East Cherry Street, then turn left onto the back street that goes behind Forreston Grade School (between South Walnut and 1st avenues). They’ll turn left on East Elm Street and go around the block, turning left onto South Walnut Avenue.

The parade will end at Memorial Park.

“We didn’t know what kind of response we’d get [for the parade],” Koeller said. “That’s why we’re keeping it a smaller route, a neighborhood route, rather than right down Main Street.”

Once all parade participants have reached Memorial Park, there will be a Christmas tree lighting.

Santa also will be at the park that night greeting children and accepting Christmas wish lists, Koeller said. For those who aren’t able to visit Santa on Friday, he will be at the Forreston Library on Saturday morning, she said.

Tens of thousands of Christmas lights will be officially lit on the eve of Saturday, Dec. 4, starting at 5 p.m. on the two blocks of the downtown Campus in Mt. Morris.

“The day will start with our friends from Berry View Orchard serving freshly made apple cider donuts from noon till 7 p.m.,” organizer Jerry Stauffer said. “They will be suppling donuts with the food in the evening.”

The Disciples United Methodist of Mt. Morris will be hosting a family oriented activity in the Gallery inside the Sandstone building with Electric Train display from 2-6 p.m. and Christmas Crafts from 3-5 p.m.

“Outside events will include Santa Claus arriving in a Christmas lighted parade and then visiting with the kids and finding out what they want for Christmas, he will be in his

sleigh and out of the wind,” Stauffer said. “The Mt. Morris Library Foundation will be providing books for the first 200 kids to visit Santa as well.”

Judging of the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest will take place with winners being awarded cash prizes courtesy of the Mt. Morris branch of the Rockford Bell Credit Union.

Light sandwiches, hot apple cider and fresh hot apple cider donuts will be served in exchange for cash donations benefiting the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry at the Mt. Morris Senior Center.

“We may have carolers singing Christmas songs and the big event will be the lighting of tens of thousands of Christmas lights on the entire two-city blocks of the downtown campus. So mark your calendar for Saturday, Dec. 4, starting at 5 p.m. for some holiday fun you surely won’t want to miss. Invite all you family and friends!” Stauffer said.

Angel Project underway in Forreston

The Forreston Lions Club’s annual Christmas Angel Project offers area residents the chance to make Christmas a bit brighter for families.

Angels are available at Solutions Bank and Koeller Forreston Hardware.

To participate, pick up an angel, purchase a $10 to $15 gift for the child listed on the angel and return the gift – with the angel attached – to one of the locations no later than Dec. 15.

The Lions Club also plans to deliver food baskets Dec. 18.

Anyone who knows of someone who could use a food basket is asked to call Larry Dikkers at 815-266-1856 or Randy Ludwig at 815-238-2700.

The schools also will be collecting canned good for the food boxes.

OHS Madrigals Dinner is Dec. 10-11 at Stronghold The Oregon High School Madrigals will host their annual Madrigal Dinner on Dec. 10-11 at 7 p.m. at the Brubaker Center at Stronghold.

Members of the Oregon Woman’s Club brought the gift of warmth to Lincoln Elementary School, Rochelle, last week. Three OWC members delivered a collection of warm hats, gloves, and mittens to the office at the school.

“It’s a fact of life,” said Jan Steward, OWC president. “Kids lose their gloves in the winter, and, sadly, many families are struggling, and some kids don’t have warm gloves in the first place. The gift of gloves that the school can deliver as needed is simple for us and can be hugely important to the kids.”

The Oregon Woman’s Club is a part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, a nationwide group of community-based volunteer women’s clubs. The OWC supports numerous local groups, including Lifeline, Serenity House, Rock River Center, FOCUS House in Rochelle, Winning Wheels, Friends of the Oregon Library, VFW Post 8739, and Nachusa Grasslands.

100 Women Who Care make donation to Hub Senior Center Members of 100 Women Who Care of Ogle County recently awarded their Fall Impact Award Donation to the Hub Senior Center in Rochelle.

Presenting the award to Diana King, director, were Karen McCandless, Diana King, Linda Graber, Deanna Forrest and Karen Urish.

This donation will help provide for the many activities and services that the Center offers to any and all seniors in the Hub City.

Some of these activities include programs such as help with Rules of the Road, Chair Yoga, Line Dancing, Transportation, Pool and Card games, daily lunches, monthly birthday parties, cardio drumming, improving balance, coping mechanisms for overwhelming feelings, chair exercise, information on scams, help with hearing aids and governmental paperwork and referral services, quilting, crafting, movie days, etc.

There is always a lot going on at the Hub Senior Center, and 100 Women Who Care of Ogle County is pleased to be able to help contribute to the continuance of the great work that is being done there.

Thanksgiving is over, time to decorate for Christmas

T

hanksgiving is over and we are all full of turkey and dressing. I still have not gotten my pumpkin pie and right now it does not sound all that great.

I have come down with a bug and immediately one thinks of COVID-19.

So I gave my granddaughter, Dr. Amy, a call. She said quickly that I did not need a COVID test since others in the family had come down with the same thing at the same time.

Symptoms were a bit different than the virus. I also have had both vaccinations and a booster.

Obviously some small child had something that is typical of little kids and we had several little ones. It was fun to watch the 2 year olds learning to play with their cousins. We also had a 4-month-old passed around from person to person and Holly, the 5-yearold, was helping everyone.

This weekend, we had another great grandchild, Mary Elizabeth, baptized in Winston-Salem. I did not even attempt to go down with my knee the way it is. Kyle and Rebecca sent me pictures by email and I enjoyed seeing Mary in the family christening gown.

The O’Connor family had their Thanksgiving/Christmas event that lasted several days. I enjoyed soup night at Susan Zook’s home, which kicked off the big occasion.

A big group of them went out to the skating rink at the Pines and they found it to be very lovely. All redone a while back. How many of you remember going to the skating rink?

Kenneth and I went there when we dated over 70 years ago. It was fun to skate to Pauline Grant as she played the organ in fine style. We had our skates for many years and we would even go out there and sit in the car and watch the skaters.

We always enjoyed listening to the music. It is nice to know that it is still being used by the younger crew. The area is fortunate to have this activity still available.

This week I decorated my Christ-

mas tree. Last weekend Krista was here and she got it all straightened in the stand. The cat when she was a kitten spent most of her time in the tree.

Each year we bend the branches back up and try to get it looking somewhat presentable. The cat leaves it alone now, but every now and then she flings off a Shiny Brie ball.

As soon as the lights are on I have to have it lit as I put on the ornaments. It is a big tree and all the Shiny Brite ornaments go on that particular tree. I am most fortunate to have many Shiny Brite ornaments in their original boxes. Shiny Brite ornaments were the first ornaments to be made in the United States.

Max Eckardt, born in Germany, came to the U.S. and settled in New York. He had been importing ornaments to sell from Germany since 1907.

He also had been ordering all our holiday cards from Germany as well.

Last week Linda was surprised to see how so many of the earlier cards all came from Germany. They are very beautiful and colorful. Next week I will tell you more about Max Eckardt.

Recycle those old holiday lights The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) is again partnering with local fire departments and villages to offer several convenient drop-off boxes so those frustrating, nonfunctional holiday light strands can be recycled.

Drop-off boxes are available at the following fire departments: Rochelle, Byron, Stillman Valley and Mt. Morris. They are also located at the village halls in Polo, Forreston, and Davis Junction and Creston.

Light strands are also accepted at the Ogle County courthouse and at the OCSWMD office at 909 Pines Road in Oregon. Boxes will remain at these locations until Jan. 21. Accepted light strands include Italian mini-lights, traditional lights, LED lights, and other holiday light strands. Extension cords are also accepted.

Materials not accepted includes rope lights, wreaths, garland, metal stakes or silhouettes, live greens, plastic decorations, timers, and light packaging, plastic bags, or cardboard boxes. Placing just the light strands and cords into the bins increases material value and makes the recycling process more efficient for the processor.

Lights and cords will be shipped to Dynamic Lifecycle Innovations in Onalaska, Wisconsin to be recycled.

OBITUARIES RICHARD ‘DICK’ ALAN SWEENEY Born: September 11, 1937 Died: November 27, 2021

MT. MORRIS, IL – Richard “Dick” Alan Sweeney, age 84, of Mt. Morris, IL, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021 after a brief illness.

Dick was born on September 11, 1937 in Rockford, IL the son of Wilbur & Ida (Kump) Sweeney. Dick lived most of his life in the Mt. Morris area, and attended, the Mt. Morris schools. He finished high school while serving in the U.S. Navy.

After his service in the Navy, he worked at

Kable Printing Company as a mailing operator for 42 years.

On June 19, 1965, Dick married Margaret Mueller in Paynes Point, IL. They had one son, Joel.

Throughout his life, Dick enjoyed archery and catfishing. He also loved to watch old westerns on television. In his earlier years, he relished his horses and trail riding Dick is survived by his wife: Margaret Sweeney, Mt. Morris, IL; son: Joel (Stephanie) Sweeney, Paynes Point ,IL; 2 grandchildren: MacKenzie and Carson Sweeney; 2 great grandchildren: Lunaand Oliver; brothers: Gene Sweeney, Roscoe, IL and Dave Sweeney, Lanark, IL; 2 sisters: Pat Burd and Judy Barnhart both of Mt. Morris, IL. Dick is preceded in death by his parents and sister: Joyce Shelton.

She was in 1960. Violet married Delmar Rothermel preceded in death by Paul & Nora Meyer, and on December 17, 1961 at the Polo United son-in-law, Jim Nelson.

DAR seeks donations for Wreaths Across America

The Rochelle Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8739 are honoring local heroes by placing wreathes on the graves of veterans as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. VFW Post 8739 is helping to lay wreathes on the graves of veterans buried at Daysville Cemetery in Ore-

gon. They also are sponsoring the cost of 10 wreathes.

There are 201 veterans buried in Daysville Cemetery, including a Revolutionary War veteran. Special wreathes for each branch of the U.S. military will be placed Dec. 18 at 1 p.m.

The Rochelle Chapter is adopting

St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Rochelle and will place wreaths Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. An abbreviated ceremony will take place at Lawnridge after the conclusion of the wreath laying at St. Patrick’s.

The Rochelle Chapter also is accepting grave-specific requests at St. Patrick’s, Lawnridge

and Trinity cemeteries in Rochelle, Daysville Cemetery and other local cemeteries. Participants may attend to place the wreath on a specific grave.

U-Cut-It Christmas trees return to Sand Ridge prairie After a two-year hiatus in response to COVID-19 precautions, U-Cut-It Christmas trees are again available at Sand Ridge, 2879 S. Daysville Road, southeast of Oregon.

The Prairie Preservation Society of Ogle County (PPSOC), a nonprofit organization, began sales at 10 a.m. the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Sales will continue Dec. 4-5 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The cost of the trees are fir ($60), white pine ($40) and spruce ($40). Tall trees for cathedral ceilings can also be found for an additional fee.

Trees are sold by PPSOC as a service to the public and to pay for necessary maintenance on the natural areas

in the preserve.

DeKALB – After two scintillating wins in the 3A playoffs, Byron’s 35-7 conquest of Tolono Unity in the IHSA finals on Nov. 26 almost came too easily.

Jumping out to a 20-0 lead, the Tigers gained a sweet dose of redemption after two narrow losses in the championship games in 2018 and 2019.

“With the Reed-Custer and IC [Catholic] games, the whole postseason has been a storybook run,” said Byron coach Jeff Boyer, who quarterbacked the program to its only other state title in 1999. “This isn’t about me. It’s about a lifetime of memories of the kids.”

Known as a rushing team, Byron (14-0) used a pass to get the scoring going. Quarterback Braden Smith launched a perfectly thrown ball to Ethan Palzkill for a 33-yard touchdown.

“It’s a shock when a team sees Braden throw like that,” Palzkill said.

“They saw me coming out of the backfield like I was blocking.”

Continued from Page 11 Calling it a “huge play,” Boyer felt the passing game would be one way to keep the Rockets from loading up the box at the line of scrimmage.

After shutting Tolono down on a fourth-and-5, the Tigers relied on the ground game for a 14-0 advantage. It was Andrew Claunch capping a 15-play, 60-yard drive with a 2-yard plunge early in the second quarter.

“They were very physical, and when it comes to tackling, it is more than making contact,” Tolono linebacker Grant Albaugh said. “You need to keep driving your feet or those guys will run over you.”

From his cornerback position, Smith recovered a Tolono fumble and Byron looked to score again, but a fourth-down try came up short on the 11-yard line. That drive was memorable in that Tolono fans and coach Scott Hamilton became enraged by a Palzkill 21-yard reception that was ruled a catch, though the video board showed he was clearly out of bounds.

Hamilton called a timeout and came onto the field to plead his case, but high schools do not allow video replay.

To compound matters, Tolono was forced to punt after eventually making the fourth-down stop.

Keyed by a 31-yard reverse by Palzkill and 26-yard sweep by Chandler Binkley, the Tigers quickly moved to the 1-yard line. It was Smith sneaking the ball over for the 20-0 lead with 17 seconds left in the half.

“We took over the game in the line,” lineman Nick Brass said. “They didn’t like what we were doing to them.”

Added fellow lineman Jake Lenz: “In the second half, we knew we had them. They began to start cutting us.”

Using a nifty hook-and-ladder pass for 23 yards and another pass for 13, the Rockets had just enough time for a Hail Mary try from 37 yards out. Dillon Rutledge broke free past the Tiger secondary and QB Blake Kimball hit him with a touchdown pass as time expired, narrowing the gap to 20-7.

“We gave up an easy one at the end of the half,” Binkley said. “We had to come out [in the second half] and set the tone going our way – pounding the rock.”

That’s exactly what Byron did, with a 12-play scoring drive, highlighted by a pair of option plays with Smith. The first was a crucial 8-yard run by Smith on third-and-8 with the Rockets beginning to exert defensive pressure.

On the next play, he went the opposite direction and pitched to Palzkill, who initially fumbled it, but alertly picked it up on the first hop and raced into the end zone for a 20-yard touchdown.

“People see us and we’re not the biggest or strongest. We pride ourselves on heart,” Palzkill said.

Palzkill and Binkley then made their presence felt on defense with tackles for losses after Kimball got his team into the red zone. A fourth-down pass went off the receiver’s fingertips, and the Tigers took over on downs.

Deliberately milking the clock, Byron advanced 76 yards, with Binkley picking up 46 on one play. However, the Tigers failed to score, and Tolono had the ball at the 1-yard line with 6:30 left in the game, still trailing 28-7.

Like the TD before halftime, at least it was a moral victory for the Rockets.

They could only muster four yards, and faced a fourth down. With little or no chance to win the game, Tolono opted to go for it on his own 5-yard line, and the result was an incomplete

pass.

“They do such a great job of keeping you off-balance, we just didn’t get the plays we needed to move the sticks,” said Hamilton, who fell to 0-6 in state championships games. “When you fall behind a team that grinds it out, it’s hard to come back. Our defense was on the field a lot.”

Palzkill made it 35-7 on another option pitch, his third score of the game, and the large contingent of Tiger fans at Huskie Stadium began the celebration.

In attendance was Everett Stine, who coached Boyer and defensive coordinator Sean Considine to the ‘99 title, along with another assistant, Chad Wilmarth.

“This means a lot to me because the

type of stuff we taught them, they came back to teach it too,” said Stine, celebrating a birthday the same way he did when the Tigers beat St. Joe-Ogden 41-8. “It’s like my pupils are doing well. It’s an incredible feeling.”

Boyer moved to 87-23 in nine seasons of fall ball at Byron, and needs around 130 wins to go to catch his former mentor.

“Everett lit the torch, and we’re honored to carry it,” Boyer said. “It lets these kids have the same experience we did in high school.”

Binkley had 164 yards on 19 carries, with Palzkill and Claunch adding 78 and 75. Smith was 3-for-5 passing for 64 yards, and Byron led 437-205 in total yards. Claunch (8) and Binkley (7) were the tackle leaders on defense.

DEKALB – With a 38-25 win over Carrollton in the IHSA Class 1A football state final Nov. 26, Lena-Winslow added a fifth state title to the trophy case, supplementing its championship legacy.

“It’s definitely a dynasty,” said Marey Robey, who ran for 203 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone. “We even have [Bill] Belichick here.”

That comment is in reference to coach Ric Arand, who engineered all five championships, to go with 220 wins in 25 years at the school. For the record, Le-Win has won 18 of its last 19 playoffs games, the best of any program in the state.

The only thing that stopped the Panthers from being more dominant were three turnovers in the first half and the play of Carrollton quarterback Grant Pohlman, who scorched Le-Win with a 63-yard touchdown run and a pair of scoring passes.

possession. A pass went incomplete, but the Hawks got the ball back on a Le-Win fumble in the red zone.

The Panthers took a 6-0 lead later in the first quarter on a 60-yard run by Jake Zeal. However, an interception in the end zone and fumbled punt return

kept Le-Win from increasing its lead as the Panthers ran at will against the Carrollton defense.

“I thought we won the battle up front,” Arand said.

Carrollton took advantage of the fumbled punt to take a 7-6 lead on an 18-yard pass from Pohlman to Kyle Leonard.

That’s when Roby took over the ball game.

First, it was a 43-yard score and then a 45-yarder on an outside counter to make it 22-13 midway through the second quarter.

“The big difference was we had a hard time tackling Roby,” Carrollton coach Nick Flowers said. “He could move laterally, as he could downhill.

We couldn’t tackle against the grain on him.”

The Hawks continued to make the game interesting, though, with Pohlman finding a wide-open Gus Coonrod for a 47-yard scoring strike. That closed the gap to 22-19 with less the 2 minutes until halftime – a dangerous amount of time with Roby on the field.

Girls Bowling Oregon starts season 2-0: The Hawks won a pair of matches at Town & Country Lanes in Mt. Morris to open the 2021 season.

In the first dual, Oregon defeated West Central 1,962-1,340. Ava Wight led the way with a 558 series, followed by Paige Beauchem (382), Kendra Ehrler (258), Mackenzie Alford (357) and Trinity Hultquist (307). Allie Valley led West Central with a 348 series.

The Hawks also eked out a win over Abingdon, 1,930-1,823. Wight opened her 594 series with a 235 game, while Alford (351), Beauchem (337) and Ehlrer (306) all rolled three games for Oregon; Hultquist (261) and Kylie Krug (81) split the final series.

Boys Bowling Oregon wins twice at home: The Hawks defeated West Central 2,818-2,320 and topped Abingdon 2,643-2,374 in a pair of duals at Town & Country Lanes in Mt. Morris.

Jackson Werren opened his 641 series with a 205, and closed it with a 237 to lead Oregon (5-1), while Isaac Kaltenbrun had a 250 second game in his 620 series. Brandon Rowe (570) and Bryan Immel (514) also

rolled three games for the Hawks, and Gavvin Surmo (348) and Brady Davis (125) split the other series.

Werren’s 552 series led Oregon against Abingdon, as he had a 213 second game.

Immel rolled a 541 series, Kaltenbrun had a 513, and Rowe added a 503. After Stylar Klapp’s 145 in the opening game, Roberto Hernandez took over for the final two games, rolling a team-high 222 and finishing with a 389.

Oregon 9th in Rockford: The Hawks rolled a 5,116 to place ninth at the NIBPA Preseason Tournament at Don Carter Lanes, a meet comprised of teams from the NIC-10 and NIBC conferences.

Isaac Kaltenbrun led Oregon with a 1,139 six-game series, highlighted by a 228 second game, to finish 21st overall. Bryan Immel rolled a 1,042 series, with a 208 final game, to place 33rd. Brandon Rowe was 35th with a 1,034 series that he opened with a 213 game. Jackson Werren was 43rd overall with a 952 game that included a 235 third game, and Stylar Klapp was 44th with a 949; he bowled a 206 third game.

Time to put a wrap on the 2021 football season S

tarting with the 8-man championship the week before and ending with the IHSA 8A title game Saturday night, it’s time to put a wrap on the football season.

Without a doubt, the premier championship game was Cary-Grove against East St. Louis in 6A. Some observers called it the best final they had ever seen.

An undersized, but brutally efficient Cary-Grove upset the team ranked best in the state, regardless of class. It was a 37-36 score, with nonstop action for 48 minutes at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb on Saturday.

It goes to show that coaching, discipline and fundamentals can win out over superior talent and size. East St. Louis had an All-American receiver and an offensive line that averaged 6-foot-5, 307 pounds.

Cary-Grove’s biggest player on defense was 214 pounds. Overall on defense, 1A Lena-Winslow was bigger than 6A Cary-Grove.

On Friday, I spent that day at NIU watching 1A through 4A. As expected, traditional powers Lena-Winslow, Wilmington, Byron and Joliet Catholic had commanding victories.

Joliet Catholic made a mockery of 4A with all its size, power and strength.

They belonged at least a couple of classes higher.

Schools can petition to play in a higher class and Joliet may have cheated their kids by not exposing them to the best post-season competition. Romping through inferior opponents may have gotten them their 14th state title, but why not test yourself instead.

Defending 4A champ Richmond-Burton, a former BNC foe, came into the semifinal against Joliet riding a 32-game winning streak and still lost by 17 points.

Another former BNC member, Hampshire (1,600 enrollment), made the 7A playoffs. The largest former BNC school is Huntley with more than 3,000 students.

Remember when Huntley came into the BNC to replace Forreston in 1995.

It wasn’t that long ago that Huntley and Forreston were comparable in enrollment.

Marengo’s enrollment of 662 was small enough to stay in the BNC, but they remain content in a different conference. On a side note, they also made the playoffs, but got hammered by

Joliet Catholic 48-0 in the first round.

For that matter, a pretty decent Genoa-Kingston team lost by a similar margin to Joliet a couple of weeks later.

It’s not just the 4A championship game that was uneven, but all other games leading up to it that Joliet played in.

With its current slate of 10 schools, the Big Northern is as stable as any league around. The only question mark is in football, where Rockford Christian decided to return, but took a severe beating.

Hopefully, the Royal Lions can build their program and allow the conference to retain its simple 9-game schedule. All they would need is a couple of kids off the Joliet squad, such as the 6-3, 230-pound running back who looked like he was in college.

What isn’t so stable for football is the NUIC. Another hole was created with East Dubuque opting to coop with a Wisconsin school.

The only plus is that East Dubuque was the longest road trip for schools around here. But, if you have to find a nonconference opponent out in the hinterlands, that negates it.

In 1996, the Upstate Illini and NW Illinois merged with the following football-playing teams: AFC, Durand, Hiawatha, Rockford Lutheran, North Boone, Pec, South Beloit, Dakota, East Dubuque, Galena, Le-Win, Oran-

geville, Stockton, Warren/River Ridge, Aquin, EPC, Forreston, Mt. Carroll and Polo. Of those 20 programs, only Dakota, Galena, Le-Win, Stockton, EPC and Forreston remain doing 11-man ball within the league With the talent and size it has coming back, Lena-Winslow looks like the team to beat in 2022. Of course, Forreston will be in the mix with a solid returning core.

It was gratifying to be on NIU’s field after Byron’s win with notebook in hand covering the event. Even more enjoyable was to personally congratulate all of the Byron coaches that I have become friends with over the years.

Similar to Cary-Grove, Byron wasn’t particularly big or athletic, but they functioned as a well-oiled machine in running the ball down Tolono’s throat. For the record, I’d put the two Byron teams that finished second in the state ahead of the 2021 squad.

But, in the ultimate compliment, the 2021 team got the job done when it counted.

Then, for good measure, Roby had an interception to stymie a Hawks drive just before halftime.

Surprisingly, Carrollton tied the touchdown tally 4-4 early in the third quarter on a Pohlman QB sneak, making it 30-25. Three plays before, he escaped the Panther defense for a 20-yard run on fourth-and-9.

“It was a great game between two great teams,” Flowers said.

Fittingly, it was classic NUIC football on the Panthers’ final scoring drive. With three-year starting QB Luke Benson methodically marching his team 62 yards in 13 plays, Le-Win took a 38-25 lead, with Benson doing the honors with a 1-yard score.

“The experience was calmer this time around compared with two years ago,” Benson said, sitting at the interview table with his father and assistant coach Kyle Benson next to him.

“The bond of coaching your son is different,” the elder Benson said. “You want to see them do so well.”

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Nov. 22 Zackery A. Letcher, 26, of Dixon, was arrested at 6:55 p.m. for possession of cannabis 500- to 2000 grams after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 1000 block of South Skare Road. Letcher was transported to Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Kristina J. Finlen, 38, of Plainfield, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies were dispatched to a disabled vehicle at the intersection of U.S. Highway 52 and south Illinois Route 26 at 11:51 p.m. Finlen also was cited for roadway parking impede movement and improper container of cannabis/driver. Finlen was transported to Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond. The Polo Police Department assisted on scene.

Nov. 23 Erik Rivera-Alvarado, 20, of Rockford, was arrested at 10:39 a.m. for no valid Illinois driver’s license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 200 block of East Hitt Street in Mt. Morris. Rivera-Alvarado also was cited for operating an uninsured vehicle.

Rivera-Alvarado was released on an I-Bond at the scene and given a future court date.

Keith L. Sanders, 34, of Rockford, was arrested at 9:20 p.m. for improper container

of cannabis/driver and unlawful use of cannabis/driver after he was stopped by deputies near the intersection of north Illinois Route 64 and East Mowers Road.

Sanders was released on an I-Bond.

At approximately 10:26 p.m., deputies conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Mulford and East Mowers roads. After an investigation, deputies arrested Jordan Johnson, 26, of Rockford, for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Johnson was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, expired registration, expired driver’s license, open container/alcohol and an equipment violation. Passenger Jerry Robinson Jr., 33, of Rockford, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance (crack/cocaine) and possession of drug paraphernalia. Johnson and Robinson were transported to Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Nov. 24 Brandon Eash, 37, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked without a Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device (BAIID) system. Deputies stopped Eash for speeding on Interstate 39 near Monroe Center. Eash was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.
