Did you know an average of more than 1,000 home fires a year start when Christmas trees or holiday decorations ignite?

These fires caused an estimated annual average of 25 civilian deaths, 60 civilian injuries and $30 million in direct property damage.

The Mt. Morris Fire Protection District again this holiday season will be participating in the statewide safety program “Keep the Wreath Red.” The program is simple. A wreath has been placed on the front of the Mt. Morris firehouse.

The wreath is covered in red bulbs. If a fire occurs during the holiday season caused by holiday decorations, a bulb will be changed to white.

So far, Mt. Morris hasn’t had to change a bulb to white since the program started in 2004.

If you follow these fire safety tips, the wreath will be kept red all season.

Check your strands of lights to determine the number of strands that may be connected. Connect no more than three strands of push-in type bulbs together or a maximum of 50 total bulbs of the larger screw-in type bulbs.

Always unplug lights before replacing light bulbs or fuses.

Don’t mount lights in a way that can damage the cord’s wire insulation (i.e., use clips, not nails).

Keep children and pets away from light strings and electrical decorations.

Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.

Keep candles away from decorations and other combustible materials and never leave candles unattended. 41% of holiday fires are started by a candle.

Most important, do not use candles to decorate Christmas trees in any way.

Last, but certainly not least, Test your smoke alarms. Have one on each floor of your home and have a fire escape plan and practice it.

Natural Christmas trees always involve some risk of fire. To minimize the risk, get a fresh tree and keep it watered at all times. Do not put the tree within 3 feet of a fireplace, space heater, radiator or heat vent.

Decorate with children in mind. Do not put ornaments that have small parts or metal hooks or look like food or candy on the lower branches where small children can reach them. Trim protruding branches at or below a child’s eye level.

Do not burn Christmas tree branches, treated wood or wrapping paper in a home fireplace or wood stove.

Buy only lights and electrical decorations bearing the name of an independent testing lab and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and maintenance.

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A chill was in the air Saturday night, but that didn’t deter visitors from making the rounds at Oregon’s 37th Candlelight Walk.

And 3-year-old Carson Schopp of Oregon didn’t mind waiting another 15 minutes to tell Santa what he wanted for Christmas.

Carson along with his mom and dad and little sister Leighton, 11 months, were next in line when old Saint Nick needed a short break as he met visitors inside the Oregon United Methodist Church.

“And what do you want for Christmas?” Santa asked.

“A tractor plow,” Carson quickly replied.

Leighton looked calmly at Santa as she sat in his lap as mom Kelsey snapped a quick photo.

Santa was just one of the attractions at the evening event in downtown Oregon.

A steady stream of visitors walked along the downtown streets, popping in and out of stores. Mother Nature provided clear skies and temperatures in the mid-30s.

The 4 to 8 p.m. event also included horse-drawn wagon rides, activities for kids, entertainment, food and Candy Cane Lane.

This year’s Christmas tree – located on the east lawn of the Ogle County Courthouse Square – was lit by Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney and his wife, Angela, a teacher at the school district. The Mahoneys are retiring at the end of this school year.

The Oregon High School Madrigal singers entertained the crowd throughout the evening with performances at the CMAAA and after the tree lighting. The OHS Jazz Band played Christmas tunes at the CMAAA. Members of the Byron Dance Academy performed a musical number on the north lawn of the Courthouse Square donning brightly lit Christmas-themed costumes.

At Conover Square, families could watch model trains wind their way around the many tracks at the Blackhawk Model Train Club, visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and visit local shops.

The 37th Candlelight Walk was organized by the Oregon Chamber of Commerce.

Trolley tours to Buffalo Grove planned for Dec. 2

I have had one Thanksgiving meal with the O’Connor family, and I am ready for the second one with the Obendorf family.

I am stuffed and trying hard not to overdo. It is good to get out again with my foot in fairly good shape and back to normal whatever that is.

I have not been to the museum, but figure it is in good shape also since others stepped up and did what needed to be done. The vintage aluminum tree still is not together since it was missing a tree stand, but one has been bought and it will be put together by the time we have our trolley tours.

I am looking forward to seeing it.

Stop by Dec. 2. Tours are at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. out to Buffalo Grove. Hopefully our weather will cooperate.

After the Christmas Celebration for Polo on Dec. 2 we will have a few days and then get ready for the Polo

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf Historical Society Christmas party at the museum Dec. 6. Christmas definitely will be in the air. I love looking out my window at the holiday lights in my neighborhood. Christmas is my time of the year.

Kevin Groenhagen has been busy posting all sorts of interesting tidbits about our history and I love what he finds. I also have been interested in reading about Ogle County history and Grandma Burright. The new book about her life should be an interesting one. I remember her in the 1950s and watching her.

Jackie Obendorf, who married Don Obendorf, was a Piper and her father, Fred Piper, competed in harness rac-

ing with the sulkies. This was in the 1950s and we would pack a picnic lunch with fried chicken included and head for Oregon and the racetrack.

Larry Obendorf, son of Jackie and Don, and Bruce were little and they would play while we watched the races. I am certain Krista was there also but the little boys were Obendorf look-alikes and could have passed for twins.

Kenneth’s sister, Imogene, and her husband, Don, would be there also and it was super family time. We had some great times at those races watching Fred Piper and Grandma Burright. Who would have thought we were making history, and I have not thought about that for years and years. Now all that information is brought back in a book for all to read.

As I am finishing my column, it is snowing and I am in for the day. I will not get out in bad weather when it

could be slippery. My Thanksgiving dinners are in the past and I have brought home wonderful food to be enjoyed later.

It was Beth who helped with the cooking and said to me later, “Grandma, can I fix you a plate of food for tomorrow?” I replied that I would love that and wondered to myself, how did these kids grow up so fast!

Also I am enjoying some of Tim’s sausage gravy and biscuits from the O’Connor gathering. It is great to get together with family and I am looking forward to more holiday gatherings in the future.

Remember the trolley tours on Dec. 2 and the Polo Historical Christmas Party on Dec. 6 at the museum.

Local limestone used in building construction

By OTTO DICK Ogle County is geologically known as part of the Rock River country. Ogle County’s contour basically was determined by the limestone, dolomite and sand deposits during the Ice Ages.

Our early settlers opened several quarries obtaining valuable limestone deposits used for building our early houses and other buildings.

In 1965 while installing a fireplace in our home, I traveled to Polo to obtain blue limestone for the hearth.

The blue limestone was located near the bottom of the Polo Limekiln quarries.

While driving through Ogle County, we see several limestone houses, schools and churches. The limestone in pioneer days, besides its use for building and foundations, was burned in kilns for mortar.

In the Oregon area, we have a church, several houses, businesses and many limestone foundations.

There remains a wonderful well-preserved limestone kiln located on Limekiln Road between Oregon and Mt. Morris. The brick in our courthouse was set with limestone mortar burned in the kiln on Limekiln Road.

In this area we have about 10 existing limestone buildings and hundreds of limestone foundations. The old Catholic Church, later Church of God and now apartments, is a wonderful example of a limestone building in Oregon.

The former Church of God, located on North Third Street in Oregon, was constructed with local limestone. When a new church was constructed on Oregon Trail Road west of town, the building was converted into apartments.

One storefront in Oregon in the 200 block of Washington Street exists today, along with about eight other limestone buildings. While driving around Ogle County, Marilyn and I have seen many limestone buildings.

The pioneers first cut trees to use to build shelters, then later dug limestone to build their homes. Limestone was a relatively easy rock formation to build exterior house walls that provide

protection from the weather.

The next local building material was brick that came from clay that was mixed, formed into bricks and then baked to harden the clay mixture.

Logs, limestone and clay were the local materials used by our early settlers to build homes. They made do with what they had and did not rely on manufactured products.

A lime kiln, constructed of quarried limestone, is on Limekiln Road, just west of Oregon. and foundations is more than 370 million years old. Today, I drive over my ancient limestone road at our house.

And I do this with a car that tells me if I am too close to the center of the road and loudly informs me my seatbelt is not plugged in.

City seeks grants to cover cost

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO – The city of Polo is pumping the brakes on demolishing Congress School – at least for now.

Polo City Council members came to the consensus to not move forward with seeking bids to demolish the building during their Nov. 20 meeting.

They are, however, asking Polo building inspector Casper Manheim to condemn the structure.

“I did some phone calls earlier today and there still might be a chance that there’s money out there to get that torn down,” Alderman Randy Schoon said.

“I think what we need to do to set everybody’s mind at ease about anything that might possibly happen up there is simply have Casper condemn the place.”

Alderman Joey Kochsmeier agreed.

“I was under the expectation that we were buying it in order to get grant money, not to use tax dollars to have it torn down the next day,” he said. “So I don’t feel comfortable with us just having it torn down unless we follow through with that.”

The building is located at 208 N. Congress Ave. Schoon and City Clerk Sydney Bartelt didn’t object, but they cautioned other council members that there’s no guarantee Polo will be able to get a grant to demolish the school and that it could take months to go through the application processes for grants.

“If we’re sitting here eight months from now, then I think we just need to bite the bullet and tear it down,” Schoon said.

Council members did not say what demolishing Congress School would cost, but Alderman Tommy Bardell mentioned it could be about $300,000.

Bardell said he feels they need to do more due diligence before spending that kind of money.

Public Works Director Kendall Kyker said Congress School, while in disrepair, isn’t in danger of collapsing on anyone, so there’s no harm in holding off.

“We’ve talked about in other areas having shovel-ready projects ready to go if the grant comes along,” Alderman Keith Chesnut said. “Well, we’ve got a bulldozer-ready project if this one comes along.”

Forreston’s Christmas in the Country begins Dec. 1

FORRESTON – Forreston’s annual Christmas in the Country kicks off Friday, Dec. 1.

The day starts with the popular Methodist church rolls and coffee from 9 to 11 a.m. They also will offer their Christmas Corner and soup, sandwich and salad luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All food prices are by donation.

At 4 p.m., the Lutheran church will host its annual cookie sale at the Forreston Township building. Get there early because when the cookies are gone, the sale is over.

The Forreston High School and Jr. High chorus students will be caroling in and around businesses from 5 to 6 p.m. They will welcome Santa to the park at 6 p.m. with “Here Comes Santa Claus.”

At 5 p.m., Sauerkraut Days is offering a meal deal. You can choose either an Italian beef or meatball sandwich.

Each meal includes chips, a cookie and drink. If you buy tickets early at Koeller Forreston Hardware or For-

reston Car Care, the cost is $8 for adults and $5 for children. Tickets at the door are $1 more for each meal.

The meal is available from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Forreston Cardinal Center, formerly Believe in the Children.

The lighted parade is back and a great way to welcome Santa to the park. Registration and lineup is at 5 p.m., with the parade kicking off at 5:30 p.m. Lineup is on Ash Street, north of Cherry Street.

If you have a side-by-side, a bicycle, a wagon or just want to walk, you are encouraged to join in the fun. Everyone who is part of the parade will receive a free LED lighted wand.

The parade route starts on Ash Street, goes west on Cherry, south in the alley behind the grade school, east on Elm and north on Walnut before ending at the park.

Santa then will help light the Community Christmas tree.

After the tree lighting, children will have the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap and chat with him and Mrs. Claus. There will be a drop box for letters to Santa. While at the park, grab a s’more and cook it over the fire.

Hot cocoa also will be available at the park.

There will be wagon rides around town on the Candy Cane express. This is a chance to see a lot of festive Christmas lights around Forreston. The Candy Cane express will drop off and pick up at Memorial Park and the Forreston fire station. The fire department will have cookies and hot cocoa.

The EMTs will be hosting a fundraiser and selling Nothing Bundt Cakes.

A new event is Cookie Decorating Sales from 5 to 6 p.m. The North Grove Evangelical Church youth group is raising money by selling sugar cookies to decorate. Not only do you get the cookie, but you get the frosting, too.

Cookie decorating will take place at the Forreston Library Community room.

Also back this year is the Scavenger Hunt from 6 to 8 p.m. This event is for both teens and adults. The winning team will receive $100 in Cardinal Cash.

On Friday night, downtown businesses will have extended hours until 7:30 p.m.

ROCKFORD – The Illinois Department of Transportation has launched a new website for the Interstate 39 corridor reconstruction and capacity expansion project in Rockford and Cherry Valley.

The $247.6 million Rebuild I-39 project focuses on an about 4-mile stretch from Harrison Avenue to the north to the U.S. 20 interchange to the south, a vital transportation artery for northern Illinois that links communities, industries, manufacturing hubs and travelers across the region.

The website, rebuildi39.com, offers resources to keep the public informed and engaged. Visitors will find up-todate project information, including details on improvements, interactive maps, project timelines, illustrations, a history of past study efforts, a glimpse into future study endeavors and photo galleries, as well as a section on frequently asked questions. A convenient feedback form also is provided, allowing the public to interact directly with IDOT staff to ask questions and share comments.

Work began in July on the $98.8 million I-39 and U.S. 20 interchange, which includes construction of a new

bridge on Linden Road that crosses the new I-39 southbound lanes. The bridge is scheduled to be completed this month, with the interchange wrapping up in 2024. The project will improve interchanges, reduce congestion and increase safety.

Design work continues for several upcoming projects throughout the Rebuild I-39 corridor, including: • I-39 at Harrison Avenue. This $35 million project will convert the interchange from a cloverleaf to a safer modern diverging-diamond design.

Other improvements include replacing the I-39 bridges and expanding Harrison Avenue from South Mall Drive to Mill Road. The project starts in 2024 and ends in late 2025.

• I-39/Bypass U.S. 20 to Harrison Avenue.

This $92.3 million project will expand the road from four to six lanes with an auxiliary lane. The project also will replace several bridges. Work is expected to begin in 2025 and wrap up by the end of 2027.

• Bypass U.S. 20 from Mill Road to the Kishwaukee River. This $21.5 million project includes expanding Bypass U.S. 20 from four to six lanes, improving the intersection with Mill Road and replacing the bridges crossing the Kishwaukee River. Work is expected to begin in 2025 and conclude in 2026.

Judge grants continuance for mental health review of Oregon mom

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A second mental health evaluation of an Oregon woman accused of killing her 7-year-old son in 2021 is being reviewed by her defense team and could be discussed at her next court appearance.

Sarah Safranek, 36, is charged with five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery in the suffocation death of Nathaniel Burton, her 7-yearold son, in Febru- Sarah Safranek ary 2021. An autopsy showed the boy also had a ruptured liver.

On Nov. 22, Ogle County Public Defender Michael O’Brien told Judge John Redington that he had received the report but had not yet had time to examine it.

“We did get the report from Dr. Braden, but we need time to review it,” he said in asking for the continuance. “And

I need to review the report with my client.”

Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock and his assistant Matthew Leisten did not object to the continuance, noting that they, too, needed time to review the report.

Jayne Braden, a forensic and clinical psychologist in Sycamore, was the court-appointed expert who conducted Safranek’s first evaluation when she was charged.

On Nov. 3, 2022, Redington ruled that Safranek was fit to stand trial after reviewing a mental health evaluation requested by the defense.

Earlier this year, Redington denied O’Brien’s request to hire additional medical experts for Safranek, despite his argument that she has “a long history as to past mental health care” and that those health issues are “directly connected to her defense.”

The defense filed a motion in March saying that Safranek’s right to due process required the appointment of and/ or use of one or more experts to review certain discovery materials and/or provide testimony.

Defense attorneys asked Redington to approve an additional expert to “review and evaluate mental health records” of Safranek, including her condition at the time of the alleged crime.

Former Ogle County deputy sentenced; DUI charge dismissed

OREGON – A former Ogle County deputy originally charged with DUI, leaving the scene of a crash and improper lane use was sentenced to an added charge of reckless driving, given a year’s supervision and fined $945.

The three original counts were dismissed, per a plea agreement. All counts are misdemeanors, except for improper lane use, which is a petty offense.

The charges were amended Nov. 16, the day Evan M. White, 27, of Rochelle, pleaded and was sentenced in Ogle County Court.

According to the citation, issued about 9:20 p.m. Aug. 17, White hit a pole in the 1000 block of North Second Street in Rochelle, then fled on foot

when police arrived.

He was caught, “ s m e l l e d strongly” of alcohol, was unsteady on his feet, had bloodshot eyes and refused to submit to Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Evan M. White according to the citation.

Because of that, his license was suspended for at least a year, as of Oct. 2.

To avoid a conflict of interest, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock requested a special prosecutor.

Judge John Redington appointed Lee County State’s Attorney Charley Boonstra.

They argued that extensive mental health records were provided by the state and revealed a “substantial history of mental health issues, mental illness and related services.”

Redington only agreed to have Braden review Safranek’s history of “mental health issues.” O’Brien said Braden has been in the process of compiling that written report for the past two months.

Safranek has been held in the Ogle County Correctional Center on $2 million bond since her arrest in April 2021.

She appeared remotely via video from the Ogle County Correctional Center for the Nov. 22 hearing.

In October, O’Brien filed a motion for a pretrial release that said Safranek should be freed from jail under the SAFE-T Act because of her “inability” to post the required 10%, or $200,000, of the $2 million bail.

The court found Safranek to be indigent in 2021 after she filed affidavits regarding her finances.

The law eliminates cash bail and requires that a defendant be released unless a judge rules the defendant is a highly likely flight risk or poses too much of a threat to one person or the community to allow release.

In the motion asking for her pretrial release, the defense argued that

Safranek is not getting sufficient medical attention while in custody.

Prosecutors argued against Safranek’s release, saying she is a danger to the Ogle County community and has “a history of substance abuse and psychiatric issues.”

They also cited “homicidal” and “suicidal” tendencies that were said to be evident in police reports made during the investigation of Nathaniel’s death.

Redington denied the defense’s pretrial release motion at the November hearing, noting he had considered all factors in the first-degree murder case and that her pretrial release would be a “real and present threat to the community.”

On Nov. 22, O’Brien again asked for Safranek’s release and again was denied.

He set Safranek’s next status hearing for 1 p.m. Dec. 13.

Nathaniel, a first grade student at Oregon Elementary School, was found unresponsive and not breathing about 2:30 a.m. Feb. 17, 2021, in his bed at his home in the 400 block of South 10th Street. He was pronounced dead later that day at KSB Hospital in Dixon.

Safranek was arrested April 21, 2021, and indicted May 4, 2021. She pleaded not guilty May 6, 2021.

At 10:45 a.m., police were sent to the 10 block of South Ogle Avenue for a report of a domestic disturbance. After an investigation, David J. Walker, 44, of Mt. Morris, was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic battery, violation of an order of protection, aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting/obstructing resulting in injury to peace officer and criminal damage to government supported property.

Anthony S. Brenner, 56, of Mt. Morris,

Illinois Route 2 in reference to a hit-andrun. Deputies learned a gray Dodge Charger driven by John Arberry, 56, of Byron, was traveling south in the 10000 block of North Illinois Route 2 and a male driving a white truck was traveling north at the same time when it entered the southbound lane and sideswiped Arberry’s vehicle. The vehicle then left the scene northbound without stopping. Arberry was transported by Byron Fire and EMS to SwedishAmerican Hospital for nonlife threatening injuries. The hit-and-run remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the offending vehicle or driver can call the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office at 815-732-2136.

Nov. 23 Christopher T. Staley, 33, of Moline, was arrested at 6:37 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at the intersection of South Fourth and Clay streets in Oregon.

Nov. 24 About 2:38 a.m., deputies tried to stop a black Ford Escape in the 9000 block of West Illinois Route 72. The vehicle fled from deputies at a high rate of speed. The pursuit was terminated when the vehicle entered the village of Forreston at a high rate of speed. A short time later, the vehicle and the driver, Luis Terrazas Jr., 30, of Baileyville, were found on Avon Street near Locust Avenue in Forreston. Terrazas was arrested for aggravated fleeing to elude a peace officer, driving while license suspended and unlawful use of a weapon.

Terrazas also was cited for speeding, operating a vehicle with suspended registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, no front registration, failure to notify Secretary of State of address change and improper turn signal. After further investigation, damaged property was reported in the 6000 block of East

Marrero was released on a notice to appear on scene with a future court date. While at the scene, deputies learned of another driver who had a revoked license in a different vehicle and arrested Jonathan Marrero, 36, of Montgomery, for driving while license revoked. Jonathan Marrero was transported to the Ogle County jail, where he was released on a notice to appear with a future court date.

Nov. 26 Byron Jones, 32, of Chicago, was arrested for driving while under the influence of drugs, three counts of resisting a peace officer, resisting a peace officer resulting in injury (Class 4 felony) and possession of methamphetamine (Class 2 felony) after a traffic stop in the 100 block of West Washington Street about 11:51 p.m. While being arrested, Jones began resisting before being handcuffed. He also was cited for improper lane use. Jones was taken by Oregon EMS to KSB Hospital. He was released from the hospital and taken to the Ogle County jail where he was held pending a court appearance. Oregon police officers assisted with the incident.

The Tigers entered the Class 3A state championship game against the Golden Aces on Nov. 24 needing 52 points to break the IHSA record for points in a season and almost reached the mark by halftime with an offensive performance to remember.

Junior running back Brayden Knoll’s 34-yard sprint to the end zone on Byron’s opening possession of the second half made IHSA history and the Tigers cruised to a 69-7 win to capture the program’s third state title and second in the past three years.

The Tigers finished the season with a state-record 823 points while also posting the biggest margin of victory in any IHSA state title game.

Byron (14-0) simply was on another level.

“Early on, we knew we had to keep the pedal to the metal and that’s what we did,” sophomore fullback Caden Considine said. “We broke their spirits and the score says the rest.”

Byron led 49-0 at halftime, rolling up 378 rushing yards on 30 carries. It finished with 531 yards on 53 carries, a yard short of the record for a 3A title game.

In the blowout win, Byron also set the state record for most touchdowns in a season with 123, previously held by Peoria (116). The Tigers just

Freshman quarterback Andrew Talbert ran for 154 yards on five carries, scoring three first-half touchdowns.

His longest run went for a 77-yard score.

Byron forced four turnovers in the first half, including two interceptions by senior defensive back Kye Aken. His second interception was a one-handed tip to himself near the sideline, leading to Byron’s seventh

and final score of the first half on a 17-yard run by Considine, who had 153 yards on 17 carries and two scores.

Mt. Carmel coach Michael Brewer was impressed by the physicality of Byron’s offensive line, led by junior left guard Jared Claunch (5-foot11, 240 pounds) and junior left tackle Nolan Brass (6-3, 300).

“Man, they get off the ball hard, they get a fantastic push and just play really physical at the point of attack,” Brewer said. “I think they were as good as we thought they were.

That was the very first thing that stood out (watching film), just how physical they were.

“I thought, early on, we had some times where we were moving the ball, but it came down to early turnovers.”

The Tigers’ defense held standout senior quarterback Blayne Sisson to 4-of-14 passing for only 15 yards, including two interceptions and a fumble. The Illinois commit did his most damage on the ground, running for 149 yards

Considine led the Byron defense with four tackles, a sack and a forced fumble.

Junior Dillon Shank had a forced fumble and senior Carter Groharing added an interception.

Byron led 56-0 on Knoll’s touchdown with 8:44 left in the third before the Aces got on the scoreboard on a Sisson 81-yard touchdown run. “(Sisson) is a special player,” Byron coach Jeff Boyer said. “Defensively, I think our team speed certainly showed tonight. Our kids were able to keep them in check.”

Sisson, who had turnovers on Mt. Carmel’s first two possessions, took the blame for his team’s slow offensive start.

“I take full responsibility for that,” he said. “The first two possessions, that was completely my fault. I fumbled and threw the ball right to the defender. That’s not how you want to start a game.

That’s on me, not anybody else.”

Brass said the Tigers’ work from the offseason paid off in a big way Friday.

Byron completed its third perfect season in program history.

“We worked for this all summer,” Brass said. “We get those mental reps down, keep rolling every day and do the same thing every day for games like this.”

Let Byron enjoy being Class 3A champs Make no mistake about it. The Class 3A state football championship was played in the semifinals between Byron and Lombard Montini.

The state title game against Mt. Carmel was simply fodder and identical to all the other beatings Byron put on everyone not named Montini.

Offensively and defensively, the Tigers put on their best performance of the year in the 69-7 trouncing of Mt. Carmel.

It was good theater for inquiring minds throughout the state of Illinois who had heard about Byron but hadn’t seen the team in person. Those of us in the northern part of the state know all about Byron because of personal eyewitness accounts and copious local media attention.

Those yet to be convinced were from two camps – the downstaters who had memories of Monticello and Williamsville beating Byron in the finals and the elitist suburbanites who feel small-school football is vastly inferior to what is played around the Chicago area.

By the time the game was over, no, by the time the first half ended, everyone all over Illinois were true believers in the power of Byron football.

After the Tigers went up 49-0 at the half, the only question remaining was how many minutes into the third quarter before Peoria’s record of 805 points would fall.

In a complete contrast to passhappy Peoria, Byron broke the record

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert by running, which is paradoxical to such an accomplishment. But when you average more than 10 yards a carry, points come easy.

Of course, now the comparisons come in. How would Byron fare in 4A or 5A? Would it ever want to petition up a class?

And there already are some crowning them 2024 state champs and beyond because of freshman quarterback Andrew Talbert and sophomore all-stater Caden Considine.

How about letting them enjoy being 3A champs? Yes, they made it look easy in 13 of their 14 games, but with Montini and I.C. Catholic Prep getting in the way, it’s never that easy.

Being in 3A is plenty tough enough, especially when petitioning up to 4A puts you in the crosshairs with an even more famous public school power in Rochester. Besides, Byron already is one of the smaller schools in 3A. In terms of knowing how Byron would have fared against larger teams, we found out at Lombard Montini, which played several good teams tough. Hence, Byron would be competitive far beyond the BNC, making

strides in the CCL as well.

Be it high school, college or pro, another factor is a lot can change in a year. Levels of maturity, interest, dedication, leadership and ability can vary.

In Byron’s hierarchy of doing things, it has stability in those variables.

An example of how things can change from one year to the next was found in Camp Point Central’s 14-0 shutout of Lena-Winslow. A year ago, Le-Win crushed Camp Point and was favored to win again in the 2023 1A state title game.

Winners of 32 straight games with a line that outweighed Camp Point 50 pounds a man and a domination of NUIC opponents, why wouldn’t Le-Win be favored?

A year later, the returning Camp Point players proved to be quicker and more physical than Le-Win. It was a joy to watch the way they pursued to the ball, especially sophomore Kaden Niekamp.

Credit to Le-Win for making it 32 games undefeated and winning three straight titles. The future looks bright for Le-Win, though, as I counted seven freshmen on their roster over 215 pounds.

How did kids get so big?

When I played, we didn’t have a single kid on our varsity roster that big, let alone underclassmen. Another major difference is that kids are more athletic.

Additionally, more young kids play varsity than “back in the day” and are

major contributors. Cary-Grove, which upset supremely talented East St. Louis in the best game of the finals, relied on a sophomore fullback to carry the load on a 19-play, 10-minute drive to victory. Just like Considine and Niekamp.

For the first time in IHSA history, a team with five losses won a state title. That team was Nazareth Academy (5A), which started the year 0-4.

What a rebound and a testament to surviving a meat grinder of a schedule that included highly ranked teams, 8A and 7A playoff teams, defending state champs and state runners-up.

In what could be an all-time record, Nazareth ended up facing 10 teams that had nine or more wins.

Nazareth is young, too, with six sophomore and one freshman starting. Add in 10 juniors returning as starters and you can see why there is so much rancor over private schools having an alleged advantage in talent over public schools.

The same was true in 7A and 8A as Catholic powerhouses Chicago Mt. Carmel and Loyola Academy dominated and ended the year as the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state.

At least we still have Byron.

Oregon Hawks wrestlers open season with two wins

By RANDY HOLLAND The Oregon Hawks wrestlers opened their season Nov. 21 in the Blackhawk Center with some new weight classes, defeating Ottawa Marquette 48-33 and West Carroll 60-10.

The Crusaders brought a tough team and the outcome was not sealed until the final three matches.

Oregon forfeited 106 but got forfeits from Nelson Benesh at 113, Anna Marquardt at 120, Miles Olsen at 138 and Seth Rote at 215 in a crucial late match.

Pinning for the Hawks were Jakobi Donegan (150) with a straddle at 2:18 and Anthony Bauer (165) with a takedown in a half nelson at 2:19.

Zander VandeSand had a pin at 190 with a takedown to the back in 59 seconds and Briggs Sellers at 285 pinned with a scrape at 1:30 to seal the Hawks’ win.

Taking a three-point loss was Jackson Messenger at 126, He had three

escapes and a takedown but fell 10-5.

Losing by falls were 132-pounder Colton Flaharty on a takedown to the back in 58 seconds, 144-pounder Jayden Berry in a butcher at 3:34 and Ethan Mowry in a high half nelson at 2:57 in the 157-pound match.

At 175, Jackson Glendenning had a first-period lead, but missed on a throw attempt and went to his back at 2:52 to end the scoring for Ottawa.

The Thunder had only five wrestlers and managed only two wins on the mat as the Hawks crushed them.

Landon Ege, Flaharty, Brantley Watts, Mowry, Jack Tinsman, Dawson Alcala and Maxx George all received forfeits.

On the mat, Messenger pinned with a chicken wing in 54 seconds. Bauer caught a butcher at 4:25. At 172, Jakob Moser went from a butcher to a half nelson at 3:50.

The Hawks outscored the Eagles 33-30 in the second half to win in pool play.

Noah Johnson led Oregon with 14 points, Keaton Salsbury and Kade Girton scored nine points each, and Jameson Caposey added eight points.

Oregon 44, Mendota 36: At Mendota, the Hawks defeated the Trojans in a nonconference game.

built a 34-11 halftime lead en route to a 31-point win over the Cardinals.

Oregon finished with a five-game total of 4,862 and was led by eighth-place finisher Gavvin Surmo with a 1,077 series, followed closely by 10th-place finisher Brady Davis with a 1,060 series. Oregon wins at South Beloit: The Hawks traveled to Viking Lanes in South Beloit and the varsity delivered a 3,416,2970 victory. Oregon was led by RJ Keene with a 645 series, followed by Codey Dunbar (577 series), Brady Davis (562), Ethan Smice (547), Gavvin Surmo (545) and Matthew Stahl (540). Oregon’s junior varsity wrestling team traveled to Sterling for the Newman Tournament on Nov. 25 and crowned two champions on its way to a fourth-place finish.

With two pins, Landon Ege took the 113-pound title and Jayden Berry pinned five times to take the 144-pound championship. Colton Flaharty at 126 and Dawson Alcala at 215 finished fourth. Both had two pins. Jakobi Donegan lost in the second round and worked his way through consolation to take fifth at 150.

Also participating in the tournament were Anna Marquardt with two pins in the 120-pound weight class, Leyton Kenney with two pins in the 165-pound class and Jakob Moser, who suffered an overtime loss that kept him out of the 175-pound medal round.
