Christmas Wonder Land is coming to Mt. Morris Dec. 4

Goodfellows now accepting donations for the holidays

Tens of thousands of Christmas lights will be officially lit on the eve of Saturday, Dec. 4 starting at 5 p.m. on the two blocks of the downtown Campus in Mt. Morris.

“The day will start with our friends from Berry View Orchard serving freshly made apple cider donuts from noon till 7 p.m.,” said organizer Jerry Stauffer. “They will be supplying donuts with the food in the evening.”

The Disciples United Methodist of Mt. Morris will be hosting a family oriented activity in the Gallery inside the Sandstone building with Electric Train display from 2-6 p.m. and Christmas Crafts from 3-5 p.m.

“Outside events will include Santa Claus arriving in a Christmas lighted parade and then visiting with the kids and finding out what they want for Christmas, he will be in his sleigh and out of the wind,” Stauffer said. “The

Mt. Morris Library Foundation will be providing books for the first 200 kids to visit Santa as well.”

Judging of the Christmas Tree Decorating Contest will take place with winners being awarded cash prizes courtesy of the Mt. Morris branch of the Rockford Bell Credit Union.

Light sandwiches, hot apple cider and fresh hot apple cider donuts will be served in exchange for cash donations benefiting the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry at the Mt. Morris Senior Center.

“We may have Carolers singing Christmas songs and the big event will be the lighting of tens of thousands of Christmas lights on the entire two-city blocks of the downtown Campus. So mark your calendar for Saturday, Dec. 4 starting at 5 p.m. for some holiday fun you surely won’t want to miss. Invite all you family and friends!,” Stauffer said.

The Mt. Morris Goodfellows are accepting monetary donations for those in need this holiday season.

Donations are greatly appreciated. Jerry Griffin and Charlie Beard, Goodfellows Co-Chairmen, say that the Goodfellows will once again be able to provide assistance this Christmas thanks to the financial support of the community.

Each holiday season, for nearly 70 years, the Goodfellows have provided food assistance and fruit baskets to residents in Mt. Morris.

Donations can be mailed to Mt. Morris Goodfellows, P.O. Box 75, Mt. Morris, IL 61054 or dropped into a Goodfellows donation can located at local businesses.

Body of Kent “Bud” Dearborn yet to be found

ehinton@oglecountynews.com OREGON - Family and friends of Kent “Bud” Dearborn Jr. gathered in a parking lot by the Oregon dam on Saturday to mark the second anniversary of a boating accident that took the life of their loved one.

It was Nov. 20, 2019, when Kent “Bud” Dearborn Jr., 33, of Polo and James Swift, 64, of Forreston, went missing after their boat capsized while they were fishing in the Rock River, right below the Oregon dam.

Swift’s body was found Jan. 3, 2020 near the Dixon dam. Dearborn’s has yet to be recovered despite dozens of river searches by civilians and law enforcement in 2020.

On Saturday, a group of around 40 people gathered by the dam and then walked to the Illinois Route 64 bridge to drop flowers into the river.

“There really isn’t anything new,” said Penny Lee of Oregon, Dearborn’s aunt. “We miss him terribly. When the water was so low this year we thought maybe we’d find a shoe, or a coat, or anything, but...nothing.”

On a cold and darkening afternoon, Lee first gathered the group together for a photo from the west bank overlooking the area where the boat was last seen.

Then family and friends took a flower and walked to the bridge where they dropped it into the Rock River.

Lee said a psychic told her that Bud said “tell Aunt Penny to keep doing

the flowers. I like that”.

“We’re still waiting to decide on a memorial service,” said Lee. “I doubt we will ever find anything of Bud’s now, but you never know.”

Black Hawk statue to be featured on WTTW special One-hour show, ‘Beyond Chicago From the Air’ set to premier Dec. 1 on all WTTW platforms

OREGON — To many area residents, the Black Hawk statue near Oregon is a familiar sight with an equally familiar history.

It’s one of the tales Geoffrey Baer aims to share in an upcoming WTTW special, “Beyond Chicago From the Air.” The one-hour special — set to debut Dec. 1 — utilizes drone footage to illustrate regional stories of waterways, land and the human impact on them.

“Learning about the waterways, you start to realize how interconnected everything his,” said Baer, who

has been a WTTW host and writer for more than 25 years. “One of those waterways is the Rock River, which flows right past The Eternal Indian.”

The Eternal Indian is another name for the Black Hawk statue, which was created in 1910 by sculptor Lorado Taft as a tribute to Native Americans.

Located in Lowden State Park, the 48-foot-tall concrete figure was dedicated in 1911 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

“The Eternal Indian is so important to our region that anything we can get at all to promote it is absolutely fantastic,” Oregon Mayor Ken Williams said when told of the show. “And with the recent restoration, it really looks good. … The next step is that the parks group, they’re going to redo the plaza around the statue, put in new roads, some benches, some bricks.

“It’s going to be fantastic,” he said.

“It’s going to be a great place to visit and just relax.”

“Beyond Chicago From the Air” builds on Baer’s 2020 project, “Chicago From the Air,” which came about as a way to continue “touring” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the process of developing “Chicago From the Air,” they kept coming up with interesting ideas that weren’t in the city, he said. They had to limit themselves for that special, but were able to expand with “Beyond Chicago From the Air,” Baer said.

“There’s so much more to see just beyond the metro areas of Chicago,” he said.

The first show ended up as “sort of the ultimate in social distancing,” Baer said. “It was great, and people really enjoyed seeing this sort of different perspective than you could get from the ground.”

There are many programs that use aerial footage, but often what’s used are wide, floating shots, he said.

They’re “beautiful” pictures, but he wanted something different, Baer explained.

As such, they used a drone for aerial footage instead of shooting from a helicopter, he said.

with a drone that you never could have gotten with a helicopter,” Baer said.

“We wanted it to be that, to be exciting, to circle and swoop and dive and things like that.”

He aimed to include a focus on storytelling in the specials, Baer said, noting that that attribute is a hallmark of his work.

“What’s the story behind it? That’s what I enjoy,” he said.

“Beyond Chicago From the Air” is scheduled to premier Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. on all WTTW platforms.

It will air multiple times over the news couple weeks and will remain available at www.WTTW.com/beyondchicago. Also on the website will be behind-the-scenes video and commentary, a map and guide to featured locations and more.

Judge Hanson retires after 16 years on the bench

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON - Chief Circuit Judge Robert T. Hanson celebrated his retirement during a Nov. 19 open house attended by friends, coworkers and family.

The event took place at the Ogle County Judicial Center in Courtroom 204.

Hanson served 16 years as a judge in the 15th Judicial Circuit Court of Illinois. He was an associate circuit judge from 2006-12 and a circuit judge from 2012-21. Hanson became chief circuit judge in 2019.

Remember the days of homemade canned mincemeat?

D

ecember is approaching fast and we are busy with preparations. I have made the first batch of toffee and it is in the mail.

Two packages need to be gotten off early so I have to be thinking Christmas before Thanksgiving.

I missed my pumpkin pie at our ham loaf supper last week so I am going to have to get one at the grocery store. I always make two pecan pies for the supper but the health department said no to that so Sara Lee had to help me out. I had found mincemeat pie at the store by Sara Lee several weeks ago and they were very good.

Remember the days of homemade canned mincemeat? We made our own and they were great and always served at our Thanksgiving meal. Mincemeat pie was something you either liked or disliked intensely. Then we would buy it from some of the churches who sold

We are now being protected from this and protected from that until the virus hit. Maybe we have not been able to build up natural immunities as we have gone along in life so we are more vulnerable to something new.

Krista and Jim came yesterday to get her P.E.O. pecans for cookie making so they helped me in outdoor preparations for the holidays. Then we tackled the tree inside. It is old and the cat as a kitten spent most of her time

sitting in it which did not help. So we bent up the branches, wedged it again in the stand, and decided it would do again for another year. The cat sleeps under it and maybe she thinks she is outside.

Krista also brought the shadow box for the museum to hold two small pieces of pottery. It was Beth’s idea to put them in a shadow box near the lithographs. One is from the Acoma Native American tribe and another, while not made by Native Americans, resembles pottery that is Indian made.

It is called Nemadji pottery and it has taken its place in the Native American world. So the two pieces will be placed in the shadow box.

We are now putting on the finishing touches on the museum for our Christmas party. It means tucking away things that are still out on the table, cleaning the floor, putting away the

I need to make the slush punch and get out the big punch bowl. I always like to get out the antique punch bowl during the holidays. I also have one reserved for homemade eggnog at home. It would not be Christmas with my eggnog.

So it is a fun time of the year as we celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. One of the biggest gifts for Polo is the winning of the state title in football.

Thanks for all the hard work and practice. Our team has put Polo on the map again and it is time to celebrate in our community.

Polo earns second straight state 8-man title Big-play production for Marcos in second half in 12-7 win over Broncos

treynolds@shawmedia.com MONMOUTH – As Polo senior Cooper Blake exited the locker room on Nov. 19 night at Monmouth College, he no longer had his uniform and pads.

But one thing he did have was a secure grip on the Illinois 8-Man Football Association state championship trophy.

“This thing is going to be staying with me until they take it – and they’re going to have to pry it from my fingers,” he said with broad smile. “This is just so amazing, just pure joy right now.”

Two hours earlier, it looked like the Marcos wouldn’t have a second state trophy to take home with them.

After struggling to get anything going in the first half of the state title game against a stingy Orangeville defense, it was finally a big play that got them out of their funk.

And it was as deep a funk as Polo (13-0) had been in all season. While they only trailed 7-0 on the scoreboard, the Marcos had amassed just 34 total yards of offense and a lone first down through the first 24 minutes of the game.

Polo’s defense was just as stout.

Other than a 30-yard touchdown run by all-state running back Gunar Lobdell, the Broncos had managed just 49 yards and two other first downs.

“I had no idea it was going to be like that,” Polo senior Wayde Reimer said.

“I knew our defense was pretty good, and their defense was dang good. It was the two best schools in 8-man going head to head, so I figured it was going to be close – but not that low-scoring of a game.”

As poorly as the first half had gone, the 7-0 deficit had the Marcos still feeling OK. One of the Polo players could be heard yelling, “This is not what we do!” as the Marcos broke their halftime huddle.

What the Marcos have done all season is break big plays to seize momentum and pull away from their opponents.

So that’s what they did in the second half.

“I think the mentality of everybody just getting hyped up going back out for the second half changed things for us,” senior Blake Diehl said. “I think

“But in the second half, we were able to get out of that and realize that we weren’t down by that much, and if we got a score up, we’d be good to go.”

After a Polo three-and-out to open the second half, Orangeville drove inside the Marcos’ 5-yard line and kicked a 22-yard field goal. But a Polo penalty gave the Broncos a first down at the 2-yard line, and Orangeville was looking to strike the decisive blow.

But Polo’s defense made a stand, and an Orangeville personal foul after the third-down play forced a field goal try from 34 yards, and it came up short.

Three plays later, junior Avery Grenoble took a direct snap in a Wildcat formation and sprinted 67 yards to the Orangeville 7-yard line, then scored from 4 yards out two plays after that to get within 7-6.

“I felt as soon as we scored the touchdown, we got some momentum going, and our defense was playing so well that I think it helped us feel even better about things,” Diehl said.

tion, seemed to be the spark the Marcos had been looking for.

“We just looked at how they were lining up and made some adjustments where we could run the ball,” Reimer said. “Our H formation worked really, really well, with having me and Daniel [Engel] as the lead blockers for Avery.

That’s how we got that big run, and that’s where our mentality changed, and it just kept snowballing from there.”

Grenoble came up big on the next Orangeville series as well, knifing through and tackling Lobdell for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Polo 29.

The Broncos intercepted a thirddown pass on the next series, but a fumble on the very next play gave Polo the ball back.

That next Marcos drive will be talked about forever in Polo football

lore.

Taking over at their own 27-yard line, the Marcos faced a second-and-19 after a holding penalty. Senior quarterback Tyler Merdian hit classmate Wyatt Queckboerner on a 6-yard pass, then threw again on third-and-13, finding Grenoble for a 33-yard gain to the Orangeville 43.

Facing another third-and-13 three plays later, Merdian again looked downfield, connecting with Brock Soltow for 31 yards to the Broncos’ 15-yard line.

“Tyler had some really nice throws, and our receivers were able to catch the ball at key times,” Polo coach Ted Alston said. “But our defense won this game for us; they just played an outstanding game.”

Merdian, who finished 5-for-9 passing for 82 yards and connected on his final four passes, wasn’t quite done yet. After another defensive stop, forcing an incomplete pass on fourthand-8, Polo was looking for one first

down to salt away the game.

Another holding penalty made it second-and-20, but Soltow and Grenoble had back-to-back 5-yard runs to get to fourth-and-10 at the Orangeville 41.

It was decision time, and the Polo coaching staff discussed what to do during Orangeville’s final timeout.

“We were kind of debating what we should do there punt or go for it,” Alston said. “Coach [Cliff] Bardell said, ‘Our punts haven’t been good, and we could snap it over his head.’ I said, ‘We can’t run it; we’re averaging about 2 yards per carry and we have to get 10 yards.’ It was actually Coach [Matt] Scholl who said, ‘Let’s just throw it.’

“So we ran a route that we run a lot when we just need 10 yards – and we got 10.1, so thank God for that.”

As soon as Merdian’s pass settled into Soltow’s arms for a sliding catch just beyond the first-down marker, the Polo sideline erupted in celebration.

later, it was over.

And about 20 minutes after that, Blake got his hands on the state championship trophy. He still had it a second time he emerged from the locker room to board the bus for what was sure to be a raucous ride back to Polo.

The coaches were likely to be just as excited as the players.

“It means everything to us. As coaches, we do all this for the kids,” Alston said. “To see them progress throughout the year – we were good at the beginning of the year, but we got really good as the year went on.

“We did face some adversity: tonight, Round 2 against Milford, we were losing against Milledgeville in Week 1 and were able to come back.

When you do that a few times, the kids keep that belief, and they never wavered in their feeling that we could still win this game. Their attitudes were huge for us tonight.”

jwelge@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – Byron coach Jeff Boyer was certain that his team could never top its thrilling quarterfinal win over Reed-Custer.

He was wrong.

A Byron team that spent the first 11 weeks of the season barely challenged has shown a knack for late magic to return to the Class 3A state championship in DeKalb.

Chandler Binkley’s 3-yard touchdown run on fourth down with five seconds left, and ensuing two-point conversion run, capped off Byron’s dramatic 15-14 comeback win over IC Catholic Prep in a Class 3A state semifinal on Nov. 20.

The Tigers, Class 3A runners-up in 2018 and 2019, are back in the final for the third straight time after wins the last two weeks in the final seconds.

Binkley caught a TD pass from Braden Smith with 9.2 seconds left to beat Reed-Custer 28-24 in the quarterfinals.

On Saturday, Byron scored twice in the final 3:45 to stun IC Catholic, a three-time state champion from 20162018.

“I thought we could never have a finish like we did against ReedCuster,” Boyer said. “Our kids topped it here tonight. Unbelievable.”

Binkley, Byron’s All-State running back, is eager for a return to DeKalb – and surely motivated to erase the memory of the team’s last trip to Huskie Stadium.

In the 2019 Class 3A final Williamsville scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to erase what was a 10-point Byron lead in a heartbreaking 46-42 Tigers’ loss. The teams combined for 1,072 yards, an IHSA record.

Binkley played linebacker and special teams for that particular Byron team. Byron tight end Max Connell, who scored a touchdown against IC Catholic, tight end Isiah Gooden, running back Ian Palzkill and fullback Andrew Claunch were also on the roster at state as sophomores.

Ever since being in high school the goal at Byron is to win a state championship, and where me and I think only one other guy actually played in that game the rest were on the sideline. But a lot of us looked up to those guys and had older brothers on that team where seeing them finish like that is something we want to do differently.”

Boyer, in his 10th season as Tigers’ head coach, was Byron’s starting quarterback when the program won its only state championship, in 1999.

Byron’s defensive coordinator, Sean Considine, was the star of the 1999 team and played collegiately at Iowa before going on to an eight-year NFL career, retiring shortly after winning a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens.

After a few lean years in the 2000s, Boyer has brought Byron back to dominance the last decade, with semifinal appearances the last four postseasons.

“Nothing would be better then bringing back a state title to Byron,” Binkley said, “not just for our coaches,

even though they spend countless hours in preparation to prepare for games like that but doing something like that for the town of Byron, our fans, and especially all the guys on this team would be amazing.”

The Tigers outscored regular-season opponents 417-91 this fall behind a numbingly effective wing-T offense led

by Binkley.

But clearly aren’t fazed with playing from behind.

After beating presumed Class 3A favorite IC Catholic – the 2019 Class 4A state champion – Byron plays Tolono Unity for the 3A title at 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27.

“I tell you what it is, is the heart that these kids have,” Boyer said. “So proud of these guys. They never quit, and they showed that again. Everybody counted them out from the start and all they do is prove people wrong.”

Grit, determination keys to Byron, Polo victories W here do you start – Byron’s stunning upset victory over Elmhurst Immaculate Conception in the 3A football semifinals or Polo’s state title in 8-man football?

Both teams were nearly down for the count before making amazing comebacks. For college and professional football games, ESPN has a win probability that changes play-by-play using various factors such as time left and score.

Using a rough estimate of the ESPN model, Immaculate Conception probably had a 97 percent win chance late in the fourth quarter. Trailing 14-0 to the top team in 3A with less than four minutes to play, Byron needed to convert a pair of fourth-down TDs, recover on onside kick and punch in a 2-point conversion try to win 15-14.

The closest I can remember a highschool playoff game like this was Carthage Illini West miraculously coming back from a 23-7 fourth-quarter deficit to beat Oregon 27-23 in the 2008 semis.

With the way Oregon was dominating play and holding such a large lead, several unlikely scenarios had to happen for Carthage to have any chance at

all. Everyone of them did, such as 10 coin flips in a row coming up heads, a 1-in-1024 probability.

The difference between Byron and Carthage is that the Tigers did not win on luck. They won on grit and determination.

The Carthage coach said he had no idea how his team won, calling it the top one percent of bizarre outcomes of 263 games he coached. Byron coach Jeff Boyer of Byron said he and his team never lost faith as time was ticking away, truly believing they would score, recover the onside, score again and tack on the winning PAT. That’s heady stuff, but that faith sustained the Tigers in a time of crisis.

Could it be that Byron reached a higher spiritual and mental state than a more talented opponent, enabling them to do the nearly impossible?

Polo’s win over a very good Orangeville team wasn’t as dramatic, but it took the same type of faith to pull it

out. With Orangeville shutting down Polo’s ground game and QB Tyler Merdian hampered by an injury, I wondered how they were going to overcome a 10-0 second half deficit, as I watched the YouTube feed.

That’s when an unsportsmanlike penalty on Polo actually helped them.

It came on the field goal and instead of settling for a critically important 2-possession lead against a stagnant offense, the Broncos opted to take points off the board and try to score a touchdown instead.

A first-and-goal came up empty and 7-0 sure sounded a lot better to Polo than 10-0 in this type of a defensive slugfest.

My choice for Player of the Year is Avery Grenoble. Besides making play after play on defense, like a critical stop on fourth-and-1, the 150-pound junior got Polo going on offense with a 67-yard run out of the wildcat formation.

That spark led to a score, but it was more than the Avery Grenoble show.

As they have done all year, Brock Soltow and Merdian also got into the act.

If you can’t run the ball, it sure helps to have a QB that can throw it when the situation demands it. That’s

what a pair of third-and-13 will do to you. The 31-yard grab by Soltow was highlight reel stuff and Grenoble calmly snagged the other 30-yard toss from Merdian on what would be the game-winning drive.

Big-time players making big time plays. That’s all about mental fortitude, not being lucky.

With how well both defenses were playing, there would be no more scoring, something rarely seen in the 8-man game and a testament to the guys in the trenches on both teams.

This truly was the best against best for a state title, something that is often missing in the IHSA state championship finals.

If 1999 champ Byron wins another 3A title, it will increase Ogle county’s total to 12, with Stillman Valley (5) leading the way, followed by Forreston (3) and Polo (2).

We had our chances at Rochelle, but could never get to the championship round, while Oregon’s best shot to win it all was the aforementioned 2008 season.

For the record, Mt. Morris made the playoffs a couple times in the early 1990s, while Leaf River ended football in 1984 without an appearance.

OREGON – A fundraiser is in the works for a 13-year-old Oregon boy battling stage 4 cancer.

Patrick Newcomer was diagnosed Oct. 8 with Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, after a 4-by-4-inch tumor was found on his right kidney and spots in his lungs.

He faces 32 weeks of treatment, including chemotherapy, radiation and removal of the kidney.

A benefit will be held from 3 to 10 p.m. at the Mt. Morris Moose, 101 Moose Drive.

begins at 3 p.m. and play at 4 p.m.

Raffles, including one for a snow blower and 50-50 raffles, a silent auction and a bake sale will be held, and there will be penny games and face-painting for the kids. T-shirts, bracelets and koozies will be sold, as will food and beverages, and a DJ will provide music.

Patrick’s treatment will be administered at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, which means a lot of trips back and forth, so all proceeds will benefit the Newcomer family – Patrick, his parents, Shantel and Tony Newcomer, and his

younger siblings, Owen, Elizabeth and Stella. Neither of his parents will be able to work during this time.

Board releases statement on workplace allegation

OREGON – The Oregon Park District’s board of commissioners released a statement Nov. 19 that said staff members have received and are responding to a large number of Freedom of Information Act requests related to allegations the district has a hostile work environment.

“Over the past two months various individuals have made a variety of allegations regarding the Park District’s work environment, alleged wrongful financial practices, favorit-

ism, and salary irregularities,” the letter reads.

The board said that FOIA requests are transmitted to the requesters and the Park Board simultaneously.

The initial allegations were lodged during an Oct. 12 commissioners meeting in a 19-minute video recorded by former employee Amanda Zimmermann.

Zimmermann resigned Sept. 17 from her position as the park district’s recreation program manager.

In the video, she described a stressful work environment where she had to walk on eggshells, was subjected to personal attacks and felt the need to

say everything was OK to protect her job.

Subsequently, the board met in regular session Nov. 9 and has in executive sessions Oct. 27 and Wednesday, Nov. 17.

The board statement released Friday was signed by President Steve Pennock, Vice President Mark Tremble and commissioners Scott Stephens, Dan Engelkes and Josh Messenger.

In the statement, the board said “these situations are never easy for any of the parties involved and will take time to properly and lawfully evaluate and address.”

The board cited federal and state

employment laws in the areas of open meetings, ethics and employment.

These restrictions “make it inadvisable to issue an immediate response.”

The board also cited practices designed to protect the privacy of current and former employees.

“These rules require that the Park Board assess the complaints carefully and keep its interim discussions and actions confidential until its evaluation is complete,” the board said.

The letter concludes, saying “the Park Board takes the allegations very seriously and is working diligently to investigate and respond to the allegations.”

NACHUSA – For Katie Pratt it all begins on the farm.

Her day begins on the farm. The food we eat and the clothes we wear begin on the farm. The topics she takes to Lee County classrooms begin on the farm. The stories she tells begin on the farm.

And she’s got a lot of stories to tell, and a lot of ears listening to them — in classrooms, online, on social media … wherever there’s a seed to be planted, Pratt is happy to dig in and do her part, teaching students where pizza toppings come from, how the ol’ pigskin they toss isn’t really pigskin, and pretty much anything and everything farm-related.

Pratt brings a wealth of knowledge to students as part of the national Ag in the Classroom program, supported by the Lee County Farm Bureau. While that program draws up plenty of lessons for its facilitators, Pratt combines them with her first-hand experiences of being part of a family farm and her trips throughout the country.

When Pratt comes to a classroom with materials and props in hand, it’s like her own show-and-tell time: She shows them how agriculture plays a part in their everyday life and tells them how important those roles are — and she doesn’t want students to just look and listen. She wants them to ask questions.

The self-described “Illinois Farm Girl” who lives on the family farm south of Nachusa, is a mom, a wife, the Lee County Ag in the Classroom coordinator, a blogger, a partner in the family farm, a storyteller, and an advocate for the farm community.

For the past 8 years, Pratt has taught ag-related lessons to students of all ages, from the basics for younger students, like where trees come from,

to topical environmental subjects for middle school students, to the exploration of ag careers for high-schoolers.

Pratt’s passion for agriculture took root on the family farm she grew up on east of Amboy, but for her, the pen was as mighty as the plow. She brought together her interests in journalism and agriculture to write about farm topics, from shedding light on ag topics to shining a light on the people in the profession. After a stint working at the National FFA Convention team after college, she took her writing

skills to a budding online platform and started the Illinois Farm Girl blog, all while getting married and starting a family close to home.

The more she wrote, the more her pieces formed a bigger picture of life on a farm and in the field, the stories of the people and places that are the lifeblood of America’s heartland.

“The crux of it was telling a farm story and having an outlet to share what we do, why, and how and when we do what we do on the farm — all things agriculture,” Pratt said. “I always liked to write, so it got me back into writing again. At that time, farmers were kind of hitting social media hard, and there was a movement to try and get farmers and ranchers to tell their stories, and blogging was really blowing up.”

Agriculture proved to be a fertile ground for Pratt’s storytelling, and interest in her blog grew, both nationally and around the world. Farm advocates and leaders throughout the nation took notice of her work and she was invited to speak to different groups.

So she traveled and spoke, and those experiences also became part of her work as she documented her travels and the people she met for her growing online audience. She became a spokesperson for the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance and served on several national farm panels representing a farmer’s voice.

Many time, farmers want to offer their side of the story, Pratt said, and she’s more than happy to listen and to tell their story. Their perspectives add to the debate and discussion of many topics, such as the facts and fiction behind genetically modified organisms.

“The goal, also, in addition to telling the farm story, is also to encourage other farmers and ranchers to share their story as well,” Pratt said. “That doesn’t have to be online or on social media, that can be on the church parking lot on a Sunday morning, or in the grocery store when somebody’s haggling over a food label or a cut of meat. If you happen to be there, and have knowledge to share, share that knowledge because that human connection is what we look for all of the time in what we trust.”

Being a woman brings a different perspective the the fold on top of it all. Pratt personally has always felt accepted in agriculture, she said, but she knows there’s a lot of women who haven’t had that experience. She credits her dad, husband, father-in-law, and others who have always been inclusive of her as a woman in agriculture.

“Footballs are made from leather cowhide, and you can get 20 footballs from cowhide,” Pratt said. “The playing field comes from turf and grass management, and you have to manage the grass. The cotton in the uniforms is agriculture. The ink in our programs is soy ink. You find corn syrup in all sorts of candies and pops in the concession stands, so you can’t have football without agriculture.”

And what about that post-game party pizza? That’s right: No farms, no pizza.

While Pratt’s happy to teach how a pizza pie is another slice of the farm life, she also teaches about healthier, farm-based food options. The pizza lesson, studying different toppings each week, begins early in school and when the kids get older, they’ll sometimes want Pratt to go back to the pizza lesson since they enjoyed it so much the first time around – it even came with a pizza party at the end of the lesson.

“It makes agriculture very relevant to students,” Pratt said. “Everybody likes pizza, and now they’re learning about how we get the parts of a pizza from the farm to the actual pizza place.”

While Pratt’s role as a member of the ag community helps her understand and relate to the issues, being a woman has helped her bring another voice to her stories — a voice that has something important to say to women considering a life on the farm: You can do it.

“There are a lot of strong female voices out there,” Pratt said. “We’ll continue to celebrate those women, and continue to encourage our young women to take leadership roles and be involved. I’m encouraged, as the mother of a strong-willed young lady who is going to go very far in life, and we just have to encourage those young women to take those roles and not be bothered by the people who say you can’t do it.”

Katie and her husband, Andy, farm south of Nachusa along with their children, Natalie and Ethan, and raise corn, soybeans and seed corn. Katie represents the fourth generation of her family to work on the farm, and Andy is a seventh-generation farmer.

Katie’s parents, brother and sister-inlaw continue to work on the family farm east of Amboy, and sometimes Katie will come by to help. The Pratts are closer to Dixon and operate their farms under the Grand Prairie Farms banner.

Katie and Andy’s family gets to work on their land, and the children even have their own popcorn business, Bubba Bug Popcorn, from their homegrown corn. While the siblings started the business, Natalie has taken a lead role these days, tending to the bulk of the popcorn operation as Ethan has become more hands-on on the family farm, tending to his own tract of acreage.

Natalie is also taking after her mother in the media world: She hosts and shoots short videos about agriculture topics throughout the state as “Natalie’s Awesome Agriculture,” documenting life on the farm.

“Natalie is quite the talker,” Katie said. “When the world started shutting down in 2020, she started making videos about life on the farm. Illinois Ag in the Classroom picked up on it and requested that she do some videos for them. She got involved in the storytelling piece of agriculture, and she’s talked about micro-greens and agriculture in football.”

Agriculture is something that not all students may be interested in, but it’s something that touches all of their lives, whether they know it or not — and Pratt is happy to teach them. Helping them understand where products come from can help them learn about the important relationship between farming and the rest of the world.

Polo Christmas Festival aims to go ‘big as possible’ Third annual event set for Dec. 4 from 4-8 p.m.; additional activities, shopping take place earlier

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO — The COVID-19 pandemic crossed most possibilities off the list of events for the 2020 Polo Christmas Festival, but organizers are aiming to bounce back bigger and better this year.

The third annual Polo Christmas Festival is set for Dec. 4, with most events taking place between 4 and 8 p.m. A few activities take place earlier, and local shopping opportunities are available throughout the day.

“It’s a great thing for our kids,” festival committee President D.J. Sanders said. “I grew up with a Christmas walk. It was something we did every year; it was a tradition. That’s something we’re trying to build here.”

The inaugural Polo Christmas Festival was held in 2019 under the direction of Sanders, Megan White and other community members the pair “slowly pulled in” to form a committee.

It was a huge hit, with lots of involvement by local businesses, Sanders said.

The 2020 event wasn’t quite the same, with a tree lighting and carriage rides really being the only activities, said White, who also is a Polo Chamber of Commerce board member. Still, they were “blown away by the attendance and how many people came out,” she said.

“I think it was something to get outside and be able to celebrate,” White said.

The plan is to build on 2019, going as big as possible, Sanders and White said.

“It’s been quite a journey these past couple years trying to get this thing going,” Sanders said.

Things to do this year include breakfast with Santa at Faith United Methodist Church; treats and children’s crafts at various businesses; a winter carnival and craft and vendor show at Crossroads Community Church; horse and wagon rides starting at the Polo Public Library pavilion; a tree lighting at Paul’s Park; and more.

New this year is a historical trolley tour of Polo.

The tours run from 2-4 p.m. and take off from the Polo Historical Society. Participants will learn about some of the historical homes and businesses in town.

Oak Lane, of Oregon, is providing a trolley free of charge, White said.

The Lion’s Club Christmas dinner fundraiser will be at the fire station with sit-down or drive-through service available.

There also will be a 60/40 Christmas cash raffle, with the winner taking home 60% of the proceeds, White said.

“Definitely the last year has been hard on a lot of people,” White said when asked why people should come. “Maybe they haven’t seen friends or family much, and this [the festival] is just a great way to come together and celebrate our small town and all the wonderful things that come along with that.”

Ukulele Station owner Lindhorst’s new store expands footprint, product offerings

“I could never actually stop working,” said Lindhorst, owner of Ukulele Station America and, now, Oregon Music Garage.

About 40 people attended the grand opening and ribbon-cutting for Oregon Music Garage — or OMG, as it’s known for short — early Saturday afternoon.

“Thank you for coming,” Lindhorst said just before the store opened. “This is exciting for me and for Oregon and for everybody.”

Lindhorst gave the ribbon-cutting honor to Union Savings Bank Assistant Vice President Christy Eastman.

OMG sits just behind Ukulele Station America at 1000 West Washington St. in Oregon. Parking for both businesses is available at the end of Mix Street.

“It started with Ukulele Station America for six years, and it was so successful, a lot of people started asking, ‘Are you going to sell other things?’” Lindhorst said. “So I decided to expand and designed the building and then it was a three-year process to add guitars, banjos, mandolins, etc.”

While Ukulele Station America focused on the sale of ukuleles, OMG’s stock includes acoustic and electric guitars, electric basses, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, banjo-ukuleles and more.

Lindhorst said he also plans to expand music lessons and offer live music in OMG. “It’s exciting,” he said. “I just lucked out. The builder’s are amazing and this building just grew — I mean this structure is phenomenal. I was thrilled as can be.”

Born: September 12, 1928 in Rockford, IL Died: November 18, 2021 in Mt. Morris, IL MT. MORRIS, IL – Dorothy Jean Capes, age 92, passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2021 in Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home.

Dorothy was born on September 12, 1928 in Rockford, IL, the daughter of Charles A. & Erma (Kronk) Wagner. She married Donald F. Capes on August 27, 1955 in Oregon, IL. Dorothy worked in the office for Micro Switch in Freeport, IL until her retirement.

She is a member of the Oregon Church of God in Oregon, IL. Dorothy was very private, but she loved her time with her family.

Dorothy is survived by her sisters, Shirley Palmer of Byron, IL, Joan “Peggy” Janssen of Oregon, IL, Patricia Carpenter of Mt. Morris, IL, and Beverly Snyder of Louisville, KY; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Capes; son, Gary Franklin; and four brothers, Charles Wagner, Jr., Richard Wagner, William Wagner, and Jerry Wagner.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt. Morris, IL. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt.Morris, IL. Memorials to the Oregon Church of God.

Pauline was born on March 13, 1920 in rural Polo, IL, the daughter of Clarence & Edith Amanda (Carptenter) Hammer. She graduated from Polo High School. Pauline married Myron Stengel on April 29, 1944 in Polo, IL. Pauline worked at Kable News Company and she worked the family farm.

Pauline was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Morris, IL. She loved to pray,

He was born July 1, 1928 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to Joseph and Hattie (Albers) Collaer. Glenn married Lois Nelson on November 22, 1951 in Green Bay. He worked at Fort Howard Paper in Green Bay, completed an electrotyping apprenticeship, and then worked in Menasha, Wisconsin, Kansas City and at Kable Printing in the Oregon area. During their retirement, the Collaers traveled by RV throughout the U.S. and into Mexico. Glenn enjoyed his family and seven grandchildren as well as hunting

Born: March 31, 1933 in Freeport Died: November 11, 2021 in Rockford Harlan Ray Diehl, 88, of Freeport, IL passed away Thursday November 11, 2021 at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford, IL. He was born March 31, 1933 in Freeport, IL to Merle and Edith (DeWall) Diehl. On February 21, 1952 he married Lola Mae Duitsman at Prairie Dell Church in Shannon, IL. Lola Mae passed away August 26, 2011. Harlan was a lifelong farmer. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Forreston. He enjoyed going to the Freeport Raceway with his brother Mervin, dirt track and NASCAR racing, attending live music shows and traveling, especially to Branson, MO. He is survived by his daughter Debra (John) Gitz

and fishing. He was an avid Green Bay Packer Fan. GO PACK! Survivors include his wife Lois and three children: Kristina (Richard) Ruffini of Michigan, Marcia Collaer of Vermont, Jeff (Rebecca) Collaer of Michigan; seven grandchildren; brother, Kenneth (Mary Lou) Collaer of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.

His daughter, Mary Beth Villarreal-Collaer, along with his sisters: Lorayne Tuyls, Jeanne Linnane, Lois LaPlant; and brother, Robert Collaer predeceased him. Glenn was a member of Saint Mary’s Church in Oregon, Illinois.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont, Michigan. Burial was at the Allouez Catholic Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum, where most of Glenn’s family is interred. Memorials can be made to the American Bible Society. Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County starts process for new partner family

POLO – Marjorie K. Vaupel, 87, of Polo, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2021, at her home with family by her side.

Marjorie was born Oct. 9, 1934, in Chicago, to Max and Lola (Shaffer) Smart. She grew up and attended school in Ashton where she met and later married Dwayne Vaupel.

They moved to south Texas in 1972 and raised their family before returning to Polo in 1988 to enjoy retirement. Marjorie enjoyed trail riding with her family and was an avid traveler, even visiting China in her 80s. Marjorie was a member of Faith Discovery Church and Faith Discovery Spice Girls, the Red Hat Society, Daughters of the Nile, Tebala Shrine Women and volunteered with Serenity Hospice and the Second Hand Rose in Polo. She enjoyed entertaining and hosting

Habitat for Humanity Ogle County is beginning the process of choosing a partner family for out 2022 House Build in Rochelle.

Pauline is preceded in death by her parents;husband: Myron; son: Robert; brothers: Glenn and Russell; half-sisters: Valdene and Grace; and sister in law: Beverly.

Funeral services will be held in West Grove Cemetery.

Memorials to the Rockford Rescue Mission and/or Mt. Morris Public Library. a good dinner party. Marjorie loved collecting antiques, sewing and making scrubbies.

She donated the proceeds of her scrubbies for mission work. She loved her family and she will be greatly missed.

Survivors include daughters, Jane Thompson of Lubbock, TX and Amy (Frank) Simmons of Polo; grandchildren, Tim Thompson, Sarah Owens, Max Simmons and Mya Simmons; 10 Great Grandchildren and a Great-Great Granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwayne; and brother, John Smart.

A celebration of her life was Monday, Nov. 22, 2021 at Polo Family Funeral Home, 110 E. Dixon St., Polo. A private graveside service was held.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Polo Senior Center and Second Hand Rose.

OREGON – An Oregon man is being held on $250,000 bond, accused of sexually assaulting a child younger than 13.

Michael Lee Pearce, 63, was arrested Nov. 16 and taken to the Ogle County jail.

He is charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, punishable by at least 6 to 60 years in prison, of which Michael L. Pearce 85% of the sentence must be served, and also with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, punishable by 3 to 7 years.

Oregon police began the investigation in September, Chief Shawn Melville said.

Oregon firefighters responded to an overturned semi-truck and trailer at the intersection of Illinois Route 2 and Mud Creek Road north of Oregon on Monday morning. The driver of the truck, Ronnette Newson, 39, of Chicago turned westbound onto Mud Creek Road, at which time her vehicle overturned and struck a vehicle which was stopped at the stop sign waiting to turn northbound on Route 2. Newson was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. She was transported to KSB Hospital by Oregon EMS for minor injuries.

Village of Progress to offer two scholarships this year

The Village of Progress Foundation will offer two scholarships in 2021.

The first scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is made possible through a joint effort between The Larry Young & Friends Charities and The Village of Progress Foundation. Larry Young & Friends Charities partner with The Village of Progress Foundation every year to help make our annual golf outing a success. Larry Young also serves on the Foundation’s Board of Directors.

The second scholarship in the amount of $1,000 is made possible through the generosity of the Cacciatore Family. The Cacciatore’s have been long time supporters of the Village. Wanda served on the Village of Progress Board of Directors for 10 years beginning in 1988 and has also served on the Foundation’s Board for almost 30 years.

The scholarship honors her husband, Pete, who was also an enthusiastic supporter of the Village. Pete passed

away in the fall of 2014, leaving behind a legacy of commitment to the Village and its mission.

To be eligible for either scholarship, the student must: Be a resident of Ogle County Be either a high school senior who is disabled or is planning on attending college and majoring in an area related to the disabled, or a full-time undergraduate college student who is disabled or is majoring in an area related to the disabled Applications must be received by Dec. 1 and be completed on the Foundation application form. Applications must include at least two written references. The financial status of the applicant is not a consideration.

DAR seeking donations for Wreaths Across America The Rochelle Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Oregon Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8739 are honoring local heroes by placing wreathes on the graves of veterans as part of National Wreaths Across America Day. VFW Post 8739 is helping to lay wreathes on the graves of veterans buried at Daysville Cemetery in Oregon. They also are sponsoring the cost of 10 wreathes.

There are 201 veterans buried in Daysville Cemetery, including a Revolutionary War veteran. Special wreathes for each branch of the U.S. military will be placed Dec. 18 at 1 p.m.

The Rochelle Chapter is adopting St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Rochelle and will place wreaths Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. An abbreviated ceremony will take place at Lawnridge after the conclusion of the wreath laying at St. Patrick’s.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Nov. 15 Keith Sanders, 31, of Bloomington, was arrested for driving without a valid driver’s license on Interstate 39 after being stopped for speeding, 103 mph in a 70 mph speed zone. Sanders was released on an I-Bond.

Nov. 18 Acquianetta James, 30, of Rockford, was arrested at 7:21 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 15000 block of east Illinois Route 64. James also was cited for improper lighting/one headlight and illegal window tint. James was given an I-Bond with a return court date and released on scene.

Melinda Heaton, 36, of Loves Park, was

arrested at 8:15 p.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of North Mulford and East Mowers roads. Heaton also was cited for improper lighting/one headlight and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Heaton was given an I-Bond with a return court date and released on scene.

Nov. 19 Matthew Carlson, 43, of Rockford, was arrested at 8:26 p.m. for driving while license revoked in the 300 block of West Third Street in Leaf River. Carlson also was cited for speeding.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 20 Jarrell J. Williamson, 18, of Freeport, was

arrested at 8:29 p.m. for no driver’s license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 11000 block of West Illinois Route 72.

Williamson also was cited for improper lighting/one headlight. Williamson was taken into custody without incident and released on an I-Bond.

Deputies responded to a driving complaint at 11:19 p.m. on East Illinois Route 64.

Deputies located a Ford truck and performed a traffic stop.

After investigation, the driver, Evan Janco, 23, of Oregon, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Janco also was cited for improper lane usage and was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 21 Kanijah Young, 21, of Rockford, was

arrested for no valid driver’s license and a Stephenson County warrant after being stopped by deputies on Interstate 39 near Illinois Route 64 for speeding.

Young was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

At approximately 11:49 a.m., deputies and Stillman Fire Protection District/EMS responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Kishwaukee and Hales Corner roads.

The crash involved a Toyota driven by Brogan Griffith, 19, of Byron, and a Cadillac driven by Angela Graham, 54, of Chicago.

After an investigation, Griffith was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Graham was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

SECTION VI. This Ordinance shall be known as Ordinance No. 2021-0001 and shall be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the Mt Morris Fire Protection District, Ogle County, Illinois, within thirty (30} days of the date hereof.

The newspaper shall furnish a certificate of publication to the Secretary of the Fire Protection District, which certificate shall be placed in the official records of the Fire District and this Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after ten (10) days of its publication.

Oct. 27 Andrew N. Bjorkman, 34, of Mundelein, Indiana, was arrested at 10:23 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for criminal damage to property. Bjorkman was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 2 At 7:45 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 1100 block of Jefferson Street involving a 2003 Toyota driven by Cayden R. Lewis, 16, of Mt. Morris and a 2008 Pontiac driven by Anaya J. Hitchcock, 16, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

At 2 p.m., police issued one 14-year-old male juvenile of Mt. Morris a city citation for possessing tobacco products and/or alternative nicotine products. This violation occurred in the Oregon High School.

Addyson K. Swisher, 16, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 10:07 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 400 block of W. Washington Street.

Nov. 3 At 2:29 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Oregon Trail Road and IL Route 64 involving a 2018 Dodge driven by Michael P. Smidt, 32, of Oregon, and a 2014 Ford driven

by Owen T. James, 19, of Oregon. Smidt was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Nov. 6 Allison S. Toal, 37, of Byron, was arrested at 12:10 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Toal was also issued a citation for driving without lights. Toal was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 100 block of E. Washington Street.

At 9:06 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 700 block of S. 3rd Street resulting in the arrest of Robert D. VanDyke, 40, of Oregon, for violation of orders of protection. VanDyke was trans-

ported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 7 Hannah R. Sheridan, 19, of Sterling, was issued citations at 6:34 p.m. for speeding, and possession of an improper cannabis container. These violations occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

Nov. 9 Yezamin A. Bugarin Delgado, 20, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 5:27 a.m. for speeding, 50 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred near the intersection of North 4th and Fair Streets.

Randall L. Banister, 39, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 7 p.m. for the ordinance violation of unlawful burning. This violation occurred on the right of way at North Nohe Avenue and E. Center Street.

Nov. 10 At 11:34 p.m., police responded to a physical domestic call in the 600 block of S. 5th Street resulting in the arrest of James A. Porter, 38, of Oregon, for domestic battery and resisting/obstructing a peace officer.

Porter was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 13 Lisa Schnulle, 50, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 3:53 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 200 block of E. Washington Street.

Matthew J. Leopold, 43, of Winnebago, was arrested at 6:07 p.m. for driving while license revoked. Leopold was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Nov. 14 At 5:17 a.m., Oregon Police issued Jason E. Charlet, 33, of Kewanee, was issued a citation at 5:17 a.m. for speeding, 49 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

Scott B. Cuvelier, 66, of Fort Meyers, Florida, was issued a citation at 12:20 p.m. for speeding, 57 mph in a 35 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

Kathryn D. Evans, 53, of Rockford, was issued a citation at 7:59 p.m. for speeding, 42 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

Oluduro, 21, of Rochelle, for resisting/ obstructing a peace officer; Sara V. Stallone, 20, of Rochelle, for illegal consumption of alcohol as a minor and aggravated battery to a peace officer; and Zachary J. Metzger, 21, of Cedarville, for filing a false police report and driving while under the influence of alcohol. All three individuals were transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 700 block of South 3rd Street.

Nov. 16 Michael L. Pearce, 63, Oregon, was arrested at 6:09 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for aggravated criminal sexual assault. Pearce was transported to the Ogle County Jail.
