Its time to get your lights on! Mt. Morris starts Christmas decorating contest and celebration

MT. MORRIS – Mt. Morris will be hold its annual Christmas tree contest on the Bandshell again this year.

Contestants can place a decorated lighted tree on the bandshell beginning Nov 10 for the annual tree decorating contest.

Trees will be judged on the opening evening festivities and Campus Lighting on Dec. 4. Entrants may pick up rules and an Entry Form from the Village Clerks office at 105 W. Lincoln, Mt. Morris.

They will be issued a number that shall be placed on the tree for judging purposes.

“Prize money is graciously being sponsored again this year by the Rockford Bell Credit Union,”

said organizer Jerry Stauffer.

Three winners will be picked with the first place winning $150, second place $100, and third place $50.

“Prizes will be awarded that evening as part of the Campus Lighting Festival Opening Celebration held the evening of Dec. 4 with festivities beginning at 5 p.m. New this year will be a Christmas Lighting Display that will encompass the entire two blocks of the campus downtown in the business district,” said Stauffer. “It is something new this year with all major building being decorated with lights as well as the bandshell area and most of the trees on the campus.

Christmas Parade bring Santa to town for the kids to visit with, he will be in his sleigh and he will be passing out children books to the first 200 kids to visit him. The books are being supplied by the Mt. Morris Community Library Foundation,” he said.

Free food and drinks will be available as well as fresh apple cider donuts compliments of Berry View Orchard of Mt. Morris.

Donuts will also be available for purchase. Freewill cash donations will be accepted in support of the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, the Mt. Morris Senior Center and the downtown Decorating Committee.

BRIEFS Brat and Hot Dog Drive Thru offered Nov. 13 in Leaf River

The Leaf River Lions Club will be serving Brat and Hot Dog meals at a free-will donation, drive thru event on Saturday, Nov. 13 at the old Fire Station on Second Street in Leaf River from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Funds from this event will go to the Veteran’s Drop Off Center in Rockford. The Center provides meals, clothing, and other miscellaneous items for homeless veterans.

The Veterans Center provides noon meals Monday thru Friday for the homeless Veterans.

They also have a donated supply of clothing and other miscellaneous items for the Veterans. They have assisted in finding housing and furniture to get them started.

Thanksgiving dinner distribution offered by food pantry

Loaves & Fish Food Pantry will distribute Thanksgiving Meal Boxes again this year on Monday, Nov. 22, from 2-6 p.m. (or while the supply lasts).

Meals will be distributed to Mt. Morris and Leaf River residents. Proof of residency is required.

OREGON – The man accused of killing his wife and setting fire to her Byron home, causing the death of their toddler, is asking the judge to toss any evidence found as a result of a “fraudulent” search of his cellphone.

Duane C. Meyer, 39, is in Ogle County jail on $10 million bond, charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated arson, and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in connection with the Oct. 9, 2016 house fire in which Maggie Meyer was found dead and 3-year-old Amos Meyer died.

The body of Maggie, 31, was found on a couch on the first floor of her burning home, while Amos, whom Duane Meyer pulled from the burning home and tried to resuscitate on the front lawn, was pronounced dead a short time later at a Rockford hospital.

In a motion hearing Monday afternoon in Ogle County Court, defense attorney Christopher DeRango, of Rockford, argued that Illinois State Police special investigator Nate Macklin and other law enforcement officers made “an end run” around Meyer’s constitutional rights.

They did so first by obtaining information from Verizon with an “emergency situation disclosure,” rather than a warrant, saying they were concerned that others might be in danger from the at the time unknown suspect, then by obtaining a warrant from a judge eight days later, using information obtained in the Verizon disclosure.

They did so, DeRango said, because they knew that the only exception being able to obtain information from a cellphone provider without a warrant, according to federal statute, is “if the provider, in good faith, believes that an emergency involving danger of death or serious physical injury to any person requires the disclosure without delay of information relating to the emergency.”

Maggie and Amos were dead, and no longer in danger, and police had no basis to suspect that there was a killer on the loose, running around setting house fires. Instead, investigators abused the process to go on a “fishing expedition” for evidence against Meyer, violating his constitutional rights, DeRango argued before Judge Ben Roe. “Law enforcement used [the emer-

When they did go to a judge seeking a warrant, they “fraudulently certified that they were entitled to the information [from Verizon] without a warrant,” based on the federal statute.

The proof, DeRango added, is in the requests themselves: The emergency disclosure sought records from two days before the murders through a day afterward, and the subsequent warrant expanded the request to eight days after the crime.

They clearly were “exploratory” searches designed to circumvent the warrant clause of the Fourth Amendment, which requires police to be specific: to describe the place to be searched and the person or things to be seized.

Their reasoning was “‘There was a fire, somebody died, who knows what could happen from here?’ That’s the definition of speculation,” DeRango

said.

In their response to the defense motion, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock and Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten argued that Verizon, by federal statute, has the authority to decide if exigent circumstances exist and whether to release cellphone records without a warrant.

At the time the request was made, exigent circumstances did exist: “It would be logical for the police to fear that if the defendant were the suspect, that people could also be in danger, such as his own family, like Maggie Meyer’s family, Maggie Meyer’s boyfriend ... and even the defendant’s girlfriend ...” Leisten said in his response.

“It would also be logical for the police to believe that if the defendant were not the perpetrator, then other citizens would be at risk and therefore it would be imperative to determine if the defendant was a suspect.”

As for the subsequent warrant to obtain Meyer’s cellphone records, Ogle County Sheriff’s Detective Chad Gallick submitted an affidavit with his

application, stating he based his probable cause to do so based on Meyer’s statements and his relationship to the victims.

The affidavit also mentioned DNA, a witness statement and other evidence that pointed to Meyer as the likely suspect, clearing showing that police had enough information to lead them to believe Meyer’s phone records would provide evidence of his whereabouts the day before and the day of the fire, he argued.

After Verizon granted the emergency disclosure request, Macklin sent the findings to an FBI agent, who determined Meyer’s cellphone was in Byron the day before the fire was set.

“Detective Gallick had a good-faith belief that the warrant he obtained was valid because his search warrant relied on the exigent circumstances records that he reasonably believed were lawfully obtained by Agent Macklin,” Leisten said.

Roe took the arguments under advisement, and said he plans to issue his ruling at the next hearing on Dec. 6.

Area was brief home to five Revolutionary War veterans

You won’t find their names in any high school history books. But that doesn’t mean that a quintet of local soldiers doesn’t have something to teach us.

Their stories are part of America’s story: the tale of a generation tempered by war whose fight for freedom helped forge a nation.

They also are stories with chapters — albeit short ones — in the Sauk Valley.

The five soldiers were two of the more than 230,000 British subjects who decided they were fed up with the tyranny of King George III and fought for American independence in the Revolutionary War. Neither played a pivotal role in the war itself as soldiers in the battlefield, but their commitment to American independence would change their lives: One, they found the freedoms they otherwise would not have had under British rule; and two, their place on the winning side of history helped them find land in a still growing

nation, where they would live their final days.

As the area around the upper Mississippi River opened up for White settlement by the 1830s, it was territory rife with potential, where farmers could tame the land and start a new life.

No image of any of the five soldiers exists, be it painting or photograph, but their story lives on, long after they drew their last breath.

Ogle County trio Not too long after the Black Hawk War, three Revolutionary War veterans came west to Ogle County to settle.

Rufus Perkins (1763-1848) of Buffalo Grove, Rufus Phelps (1767-1839) of Lindenwood, and Daniel Day (1763-1838) made the trek out west.

Day’s surname lends itself to the community of Daysville, though it was Daniel’s son, Jehiel Day, who came to the area a few years before his father.

The Day Family was originally from New Hampshire, and Jehiel took advantage of prime opportunity at that

time to own land in the early days of Illinois, and came to a place not too far from the Rock River and Kyte Creek.

When the elder Day died, he was buried on top of a small hill to the side of a wagon trail to Franklin Grove (now Daysville Road). Other burials would follow and it would become the Daysville Cemetery.

As the final living links to Revolutionary War started to fade away, more memorials in their honor started to be built, and that included the one in Daysville just before the turn of the 20th century. The 22-foot-tall concrete monument proudly highlights Daniel Day’s service in the American Revolution, as well as others who fought in the major American wars leading up to the statue’s unveiling. This also includes Jehiel Day, who followed his father’s footsteps into the battlefield and fought in the War of 1812.

Members of the Rochelle Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution have tasked themselves with keeping the memories and histories of Day, Perkins and Phelps alive and bringing those stories to local residents of all ages.

Day’s story, in particular, is one of the most interesting, according to DAR Regent Laurie Perry, as he served on the Continental Line, the equivalent of today’s regular Army.

“He went where the war was,” Perry said. “The militias would have stayed in their home areas and be called to serve when they were needed.

With the Continental Line, you put your name on a blank check and you’d go where the leaders tell you to go.

They went anywhere where the fighting was.

“He’s an example of the men and women who served and sacrificed.

They put it all on the line for us to become America.”

Not much is known about the two Rufuses. Rufus Phelps served 6 months with the Dutchess county troops stationed at Fort Herkimer, N.Y. He was just 15 years old when he joined the military and was wounded in a small battle against British forces at Turlock, N.Y., in 1781.

The wound is of an unknown nature and was not specified in his pension application in 1856.

Phelps later moved to Holcomb at an unknown date, but did so possibly to live close to his son, John Benjamin Phelps, of White Rock. The elder Phelps died in 1859 at his son’s home.

His stone sits near the driveway at the Lindenwood Cemetery south of town.

The first stint came in 1777 when he served for 3 months in the company of Capt. Abel Dinsmore, who would later

Whiteside County Pvt. Alexander Thompson’s journey to the area happened right about the same time as Lepper’s, but he didn’t make the trek across the Mighty Mississippi. Reaching as far west as Albany, Thompson later settled on a family farm southeast of town and died only a year after coming to Illinois.

Born on Sept. 3, 1758, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg, Thompson enlisted for 2 months starting in August 1776 under Capt. He had another 2-month tour of duty under those same officers beginning in December 1776.

Nothing is known of Thompson’s service as far as any skirmishes are concerned during either of his tours of duty, but during his second stint, he was sure to have heard the news of one of the war’s key battles, one that was launched from the shores of his home state.

Thompson lived in Pennsylvania for several years after his military service. He married the former Sarah Scroggs on March 11, 1800, and they had 11 children. As land west of the Appalachian Mountains became available for settlement in the early 19th century, Thompson, his wife, six of their children, and a son-in-law ventured west toward the Mississippi River to find a new home.

The Thompsons made it to Albany in October of 1839, according to Helen Hanson’s book, “Trailways to Albany.”

Adam Stallnaker, who had settled on land southeast of Albany for 3 years, sold his property to Thompson and Samuel Miller, the husband of Thompson’s daughter Rachel.

The 80-acre property was across the road from Kingsbury Cemetery, where the Revolutionary War veteran would be buried after his death on Sept. 25, 1840.

Carroll County Born on Nov. 17, 1762, in Berks County, Pennsylvania, Daniel Christian was just 7 years old when the Boston Massacre drastically increased tensions between Colonists and the British.

When the county militia formed and roamed the county protecting it from enemy forces, Christian was inspired to become a drummer boy and joined a company commanded by Capt. George Will in September 1776 at the age of 14.

This 2-month stint became one of three different ones in Christian’s service, but the other two would be in a

Highlighted among the veterans buried at the Daysville Cemetery is Daniel Day, who served 2 years on the esteemed Continental Line, where he was at the thick of the fighting. He died in 1838. He was the first

different capacity.

In December 1778, Christian enlisted as a private in a county company commanded by a Capt. Kit. By this time, Christian was one of 4,058 soldiers serving in Pennsylvania. In this stint, which also lasted 2 months, his unit engaged in guarding Continental stores and prisoners.

Christian’s third and final stint lasted longer than his previous services combined. From June 1780 to January 1781, he served in the county’s 8th company, 6th battalion in Cumru Township, south of Reading under Capt. John Spohn and Lt. Col. Joseph Heister.

Once the war was over, Christian married and he and his new bride, Elizabeth, moved to Maryland and raised four children. He received his war service pension in 1833.

One son, Daniel Christian Jr., himself a junior officer in the War of 1812, decided to move out west like many of his fellow soldiers did, where they could find land and put down roots in the open expanses of a still growing nation. He reached Carroll County (then part of Jo Daviess County) in 1836 with his nine children in tow.

Daniel Sr. joined the family in Illinois 3 years later when the present county was formed.

The Christian homestead and sawmill on Carroll Creek was west of present-day Mount Carroll on Scenic Palisades Road, about a fifth of a mile west of Mill Street. Daniel Sr. died on Dec. 26, 1847, and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Mount Carroll.

While their times in the Sauk Valley were short, the stories of the five Revolutionary War soldiers are timeless, and their resting places serves as testaments to their place in history.

Identifying and labeling just part of museum work

P

eople have been in and out of the museum and everybody has a task. When we started to work on the display case in the front, there were things that needed to hang on the wall. Several things needed to be framed and they went to Country Floral.

Dale had in his collection a beautiful woven Native American wall hanging. Beth said that day, “That can go over the windows.” We all looked up and what I immediately saw was a stained ceiling from when our roof leaked. A person really does not look up until there is something to look up to see and your eyes immediately would see the discolored ceiling. That would never do!

This past summer we had the roof redone and there will be no more leakage so I gave Ted a call. This past week he has been in and out redoing the ceilings in two rooms. They look great and

When we look up to view this lovely wall hanging, our eyes will not focus on a stained ceiling.

This week we were ready to start labeling what had been put in the display case. The problem was that I could not remember as Beth described each item.

Beth had lived near a Native American reservation in the west as she was growing up and she is very knowledgeable. Since Beth was not able to be there this week, I enlisted the help of Joe Bleistein.

Joe will be working with all the arrow heads when the cabinet is ready

and I wanted him to see the entire collection. Joe has taken care of all the Schryver collection, lectured to students, and he is there when we have open house to explain the Native American display.

One of the things that Dale Blough really stressed years ago when we were getting ready for the Schryver collection was bringing in the school students. We have done a good job of that and have even partnered with the library as we informed students.

So Joe, Linda, and I spent some time this week going over all the items in the display case. Then I came home and made labels on the computer.

The next day Joe, Linda, and I were back again to check those labels out before they went into the case. Joe had brought a friend with him who also is an authority and he went over the labels with us. We did make some changes.

After Joe and his friend left, Linda and I started putting labels in the case.

I am not able to get down on my knees so it was nice to have Linda’s help.

We also started to think of where we will put a Christmas tree and got out the tote of decorations. It was full of angels that my sister had donated to the Polo Historical Society several years ago.

Those were the days when we had the Christmas walks with Aplington House and the museum open. This year the museum will be open when we have a Christmas celebration again in Polo.

There will be a trolley tour and people will come in to the historical museum to wait and see what has been going on in the museum. We will be glad to show people around.

All of us need to be critical consumers of information

T

he goal of all reading is to make meaning from the text.

Reading requires thinking.

As we read with our children and grandchildren, we know that we want to talk to them about what we are reading.

For this month, we will consider going beyond literal comprehension and look at reading and thinking critically.

Additionally, today’s world requires all of us to be critical consumers of information whether it comes to us in printed text, electronic text, or on social media. Keep that in mind as we look at developing critical reading and thinking skills.

Being able to think deeply about a topic or a piece of text is an essential skill for all of us to develop, including our children. It is a something that develops over time. We build critical thinking skills through conversations and experiences.

READING MATTERS Mary Gardner One way we can foster growth in critical reading and thinking skills is to share quality books with our children and grandchildren. Reading together is important even after children are reading on their own. It is with a supportive adult that deeper conversations and questioning can take place. This reading time provides opportunities to tackle more challenging books together.

This is also a supportive way to begin discussions with our children and grandchildren about tough topics.

There are many well written books for children and young adults that address the serious issues in our world. You will know if your reader is ready to discuss these topics. Your public

librarian can recommend good books for the age of your reader.

Part of reading critically is slowing down and taking time to reflect on what you’ve read. We can support this as we talk about things like the characters’ actions and what they tell us about their personality, what role the setting plays in the message of the story or talking about the conflict or the problem and solution.

A big part of reading and thinking critically is the understanding that every reader has their own ideas about what is in the text. We may or may not agree with the author’s ideas, and that is acceptable.

It is important to keep an open mind as we read and equally important to know why we feel we agree or disagree with the author. It is important is for readers to know that they have significant ideas and thoughts that are worth considering.

In the world of social media, these

critical reading and thinking skills are even more vital. Recent challenges posted on social media caused destruction of property and another suggested hitting teachers.

We can debate whether media should control these posts, but let’s consider what we can control. We need to do all we can to build critical thinking and reading skills in our children and grandchildren. We can teach them to consider the source of what they are reading or seeing or hearing.

We can teach them to ask questions like “Who is asking me to do this? Is what they are asking me to do harmful to property or other people?” Most of all we can teach them that they do have a choice in how they respond.

Developing critical reading and thinking skills in our young people has never been more important.

Morrison woman gets 20 years for shooting mom ‘The girl who killed her mother, that’s how people will always know me’

MORRISON – Calling it one of the most “egregious and despicable” cases she has dealt with in her nearly 40-year legal career, a Whiteside County judge sentenced 19-year-old Anna Schroeder to the maximum 20 years in prison for shooting her mother in the head 4 years ago, Schroeder, in custody since her arrest in July 8, 2017, two days after the murder, was given credit for 4 years, 4 months served.

By statute, she also will be allowed day-for-day credit, allowing the sentence to be halved, as well as any halfday credits that might be allowed for time spent in Illinois Department of Corrections educational, vocational, treatment or other programs.

Per her agreement to plead guilty to second-degree murder, Schroeder gave up her rights to appeal, or to seek probation instead of prison time. Two counts of first-degree murder and once count each of arson and concealment of a homicidal death were dismissed.

Reading from a short statement, on Nov. 5, a tearful Schroeder apologized to her family, especially to the sisters of her mother, Peggy Schroeder.

“The girl who killed her mother, that’s how people will always know me, and that’s how I deserve to be known, but my mom doesn’t deserve to be known as my victim,” she said.

“I didn’t think about what I was doing, I didn’t think about forever. I wish I could go back to when she was proud of me. I don’t want to be the reason she is gone, but I am, and I’m sorry.”

On July 6, 2017, three days after she turned 15, Schroeder took her mother’s gun, and when she came home from work, told her she had a surprise for her, had her put a towel over her face then shot the 53-year-old in the head.

She and her then-girlfriend, Rachel Helm, had for two weeks been texting each other messages about ways to kill Peggy, who the girls feared would keep them apart now that their romantic relationship was known.

Schroeder texted a picture of her mom’s body to Helm to prove she had killed her, and after Helm was dropped off at the Schroeders’ Morrison home, the pair spent two days in the house with the body, trying to clean up the crime scene and preparing to run away.

In the end, they set the house on fire and left.

Schroeder got a ride a ride to her father’s home in Walnut and Helm to her home in Rock Falls, where she told her mother what happened.

Schroeder was arrested later that night.

“This case is probably in the top tier of the most egregious and despicable ... situations I can recall in my almost 37 years in the law,” Circuit Court Judge Trish Senneff said when handing down the maximum sentence allowed for second-degree murder. “The callous disregard for the life of Peggy Schroeder ... is disgusting.”

Defense attorney Jim Mertes had sought 12 years, citing in part what he has called Helm’s instigation of the crime.

“Rachel Helm was certainly not the only reason Peggy Schroeder was murdered,” Mertes said. “She was, however, the horrible catalyst of a particularly horrible storm.”

State’s Attorney Terry Costello argued for the full 20.

“Every once in a while, a case comes along that shocks the conscience and deserves the highest penalty. This is that case,” Costello said.

Senneff noted, but gave little weight to, the defense’s emphasis on Helm’s influence on Schroeder, or to Schroeder’s youth or her lifelong treatment for mental Illness.

“What it boils down to is this: There is no evidence that Anna Schroeder did not know the difference between right and wrong.

“No one forced her to commit this act, she thought of a plan to kill her mother and burn down her house to cover it up, and she took the steps to put her plan into action.

“She chose to act in this evil manner, and then tried to get away with it.”

On Aug. 16, the Oregon School Board voted 4-2 to close DLR in Mt. Morris after the 2021-22 school year.

Seventh and eighth grade students will be moved to Oregon High School, located 5 miles east.

The first public hearing is set for 6:30 p.m. in the Oregon High School library.

Property tax levy hearing Also scheduled for Nov. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Oregon High School library is a public hearing to approve a proposed property tax levy increase for Oregon C.U.S.D. #220 for 2021.

The estimated property taxes to be levied for 2021 are $12,818,010, which represents a 6.58% increase over the previous year.

Polo beats Milford-Cissna Park in 62-52 thriller Next up: Marcos head to Biggsville on Saturday, Nov. 13. Game time 1 p.m.

POLO – In a rematch of opponents from the 2019 state championship game in 8-man football, it was Polo surviving adversity around every corner to defeat Milford-Cissna Park 62-52 in their second-round playoff game Saturday afternoon.

“It was an emotional game with wild swings,” said an exhausted Marco coach Ted Alston, who looked like he had just gotten off a 3-hour roller coaster ride.

How wild of an afternoon was it?

In the first half, M-CP scored four straight times on their first play from scrimmage in a series, on runs of 57, 64 and 51 yards by Angel Salinas and 53 yards by quarterback Sawyer Laffoon.

“They slapped us in the mouth. It was strange situation to be in,” Polo’s Wyatt Queckboerner said.

One of those scores came after the Bearcats recovered an onside to take a 20-8 lead, stunning and silencing the large crowd of Polo fans.

“We were shocked,” Alston said. “A lot of teams would have folded. Credit to our kids for not doing that.”

Behind the running of Brock Soltow (134 yards) and Avery Grenoble (189 yards), the Marcos clawed their way back. Grenoble started the rally with a spin move on a would-be tackler for an 18-yard score. Soltow tacked on two more scores to cut the deficit to 26-24, though M-CP would then increase it to 32-24.

Late in the second quarter, Grenoble tied the game for Polo with a 31-yard touchdown, following lineman Blake Diehl, who took out two Bearcats with one vicious block.

A key for Polo was making extra points, as they had four first-half TDs to five for M-CP, but were knotted at 32-32. In all they made their first seven PATs, outscoring M-CP 14-4 in that category, which ended up being the final margin.

“That kept us in the game,” said Alston, whose team had three fewer possessions than their opponent.

Coming out in the second half with momentum and receiving the kickoff, Polo failed to cover the onside kick for the second time. Three plays later, the Bearcats were in the end zone. Salinas, who torched Polo for 257 yards, went

34 yards to make it 38-32.

“We worked on onside kicks all week,” Alston said. “They just did a good job of executing them.”

Polo finally took its first lead of the game (40-38) on the ensuing possession with an 11-play, 60-yard drive. It was Grenoble following the frame of 250pound converted lineman/fullback Daniel Engel on every carry, culminating with a fourth-down score.

“He did a great job at fullback, but it starts with the offensive line,” said QB Tyler Merdian, who was masterful in directing the offense.

That line of Kahlil Sankey, Cooper Blake, Waylon Harris, Queckboerner and Diehl dominated the Bearcat defense from start to finish, as the Marcos scored eight of the nine times they had the ball. The only time they didn’t was when they went to the passing game just before the half.

“I don’t know if I have ever been as proud of an offensive line as I was today. And the backs ran hard after contact,” Alston said.

M-CP took the lead back 44-40 on an unusually long 14-play, 87-yard drive.

FORRESTON – With the numbers of Lena-Winslow’s all-white uniforms hard to distinguish, the Forreston PA announcer one time called that a tackle was made “by most of the Panthers.”

In a 38-8 second-round win in the 1A playoffs over the Cardinals on Saturday Nov. 6, that summed up the complete dominance Le-Win had during the night game.

Forreston’s offense, which produced 319 yards in a 22-20 win over Le-Win two weeks ago, fell 200 yards short of that mark in this one, with the Panthers’ defense gobbling up any attempt at rushing. Previously, Forreston was 11-for-18 in third down conversion; this time, it was only 2-for-8.

“I certainly didn’t expect this,” Le-Win coach Ric Arand said. “We hit some big plays against them. That doesn’t happen very much to these guys.”

Those big plays began in the second quarter with a 40-yard touchdown run

by Marey Roby. It came one play after a 50-yard score by Roby was called back for a holding penalty. That gave the Panthers a 16-0 lead.

Then on Forreston’s next play from scrimmage, Jacob Fiorello took a toss and was tackled for a 5-yard loss by Roby. Two plays later, a blitzing Ethan Fye forced a fumble as QB Logan Dyson was attempting to pass. The Cardinal coaching staff vehemently stated their case to officials that it was an incomplete pass because Dyson’s arm was moving forward, but the controversial call stood.

With Le-Win taking over at the 34-yard line, Roby made it 24-0 on a 10-yard run, and Forreston’s offense continued to sputter into halftime.

“From the start, you could tell they had a different mindset,” said Forreston coach Keynon Janicke, in explaining the difference in Le-Win from two weeks ago. “They were all over the ball and aggressive.”

The second half started just as badly for the Cardinals, as Roby returned the kickoff to midfield and another 15 yards was tacked on for a late hit, giving Le-Win possession at the Forreston 34-yard line.

Noah Johnson and Devonte KingBlack came up with tackles for losses, but on third down, Le-Win QB Luke Benson found Jace Flynn on a 32-yard pass. Three plays later, it was the three-year starter Benson going in for a 1-yard score.

Roby put the game away later in the third quarter with a 23-yard touchdown run for a 38-0 advantage.

line,” Arand said. “And our run defense was absolutely incredible.”

With Arand resting his starters, Forreston was able to march down for a late touchdown. Dyson and Fiorello connected on a scoring pass, with Cole Becker grabbing the PAT pass.

Actually, the game didn’t start too badly for Forreston, with Johnson bursting 8 yards up the middle on the opening play. But the Panthers still

forced a three-and-out.

The Cardinal defense got the ball back for its offense with a stop on fourth down at its own 36-yard line.

“We were ready and prepared,” Janicke said. “We had three great practices this week.”

Forreston mustered one first down before punting the ball back. From that point forward, it was all Le-Win, as Roby had five straight carries, cul-

minating with the game’s first touchdown on a sweep.

“If he gets outside of us and we don’t wrap and tackle, he’s gone,” Janicke said.

Forreston closes out the year at 8-3, while Le-Win (9-2) hosts Fulton (9-2) – another NUIC mate – in another rematch. In Week 5, defending 1A state champ Le-Win defeated the Steamers 54-7.

On fourth-and-8, Laffoon found Salinas at the pylon for a 31-yard touchdown.

“There was no fear in our kids,” M-CP coach Clint Schwartz said. “They didn’t care that Polo was 10-0 and seeded No. 1. Anyone that thinks 8-man is inferior to 11-man needed to see this game. It was great football.”

The Marcos came right back, with Soltow rambling 46 yards for a touchdown on Polo’s longest gain of the day.

Merdian escaped a tackle by two defenders and passed to Sankey for the pair’s second PAT connection, and the Marcos led 48-44.

Queckboerner and Cayden Webster then came up with back-to-back TFLs and an M-CP fourth-down pass was incomplete, giving Polo the ball at the visitor’s 21-yard line midway through the fourth quarter. Soltow added his fifth score for a two-possession lead at 56-44.

The Bearcats weren’t done though.

With four minutes left, M-CP pulled within 56-52 and attempted another

onside kick, only to see the sure-handed Webster return it to the 35-yard line.

Helped by a late-hit penalty, one of 12 flags for 94 yards on M-CP, Polo soon found itself inside the 2-yard line.

That’s when the strangest play of the game occurred.

Merdian took the snap and realized the defense was purposely backing away from him. Meanwhile, the Polo coaches told him not to score, so there was a brief standoff with neither team making a move. Finally, Merdian fell down at the 1-yard line after letting a few seconds run off the clock.

He did tack on a score with 40 seconds left on a fourth-down play to make it 62-52.

Soltow closed out the game with an interception, making up for intentionally dropping one earlier thinking it was fourth down instead of third.

“When we got behind, nothing changed,” Merdian said. “We just kept on fighting.”

Polo (11-0) will travel to Biggsville on Saturday, Nov. 13 to take on West Central (9-2) at 1 p.m. The winner advances to Monmouth College for the 8-man state championship game on Friday, Nov. 19.

Polo’s 8-man playoff game triggered all emotions T hree years ago, the Polo brain trust of Andy Faivre, Ted Alston and Jeff Bumstead had a serious decision to make and that was whether or not to convert from 11-man football to 8-man.

The trio diligently did their homework and came up with the recommendation to begin 8-man play.

With declining numbers and other factors analyzed, it made sense. However, the decision was somewhat radical in is our football-crazed society that only knows the 11-man game.

After witnessing what transpired Saturday afternoon at the Polo football field, it was more than an exciting win for the Marcos. It was also validation for that risky call made three years previous.

What 8-man football done has created a whole new level of school spirit for smaller schools that struggled to compete in the 1A classification.

Had Polo still been in 11-man and made the playoffs, they would have been the second-smallest school.

Remember, they made the 1A playoffs in 2018 and lost 35-7 in the first round.

Yeah, you might have sweatshirts made up proclaiming IHSA Playoffs 2018, but what fun is getting hammered in the first round?

I’ll tell you what fun is.

Fun is spending Saturday afternoon is a closely contested game with a similar opponent. The entertainment

value by the home team and Milford-Cissna Park was off the charts.

This spirit of competition would not be possible in 1A. Let’s say Polo with its enrollment of 170 is matched up with a school of 300.

You may say that’s only a difference of 130 kids, but the mathematics is different as you go up classes. A school of 1,000 competing against one with 870 in 5A would only be 13 percent as large, whereas 300 is 43 percent as large as 170 in 1A. Upon leaving Polo Saturday, I saw the difference later that evening between 8-man and the brand of ball Forreston and Le-Win were playing in the 1A playoffs. That’s not a knock of 8-man either.

Likewise, if I went and watched Wilmington in 2A, their level of play would have been greater than anything in 1A. And, on and on it goes, culminating with 8A powerhouse Loyola Academy.

Bottom line – players, coaches, cheerleaders, band members, students, parents and fans from Polo and Milford-Cissna Park were able to participate and witness what the IHSA

calls a “unique privilege”. That is straight out of their mission statement.

I had an absolute blast covering the game on Saturday and was blessed by the experience. If Faivre, Alston and Bumstead hadn’t made that call three years ago, that enhancement to my life is gone.

I’m trying not to wax philosophical, but high school sports come attached with a huge emotional tag. I don’t live in Polo, but know how much excitement is building up in town this very week because of the football team.

The exact same thing is happening in Orangeville and Amboy, as those two schools prepare to face off this weekend. In 11-man, that would not have been possible.

The only negative to Polo and M-CP’s game was the heated emotions at the end, with a visiting fan being escorted out by police, the M-CP head coach being assessed with unsportsmanlike calls and players from both sides becoming a bit chippy.

The officials even had to be given a protective walk to the school by Marco administrators. If I’m an angry fan, I’m not going to mess with Mark Downey.

Here’s what happens, though.

In talking with the M-CP coach afterwards, he was as affable and friendly as he could be. Like a different man than the one in the heat of battle.

After the perfunctory post-game player hand shakes, a few Marco players later joined M-CP players and exchanged pleasantries. From intense rivals on the field to new-found pals.

Even the guy that got booted may have had a different attitude. I asked the police officer about it and he said the man had a much different outlook as he left the premises.

I’m sure all parties are good people.

But, high stakes sports contest have a way of stirring human passion and often not in a favorable manner.

On another note, it was good to see Forreston principal Travis Heinz at Saturday night’s game. Travis had five tough days of chemo for his cancer and told me he slept most of Saturday to be able to attend the football game.

The man was in pain, but maintained a smile as he walked along the Forreston sideline, a site of so many cherished memories for him over the years.

One other Forreston note – Roger Schmidt, the HOF cross country coach mentioned in last week’s column was born in Forreston. I did not realize that until reading his obituary. The man coached seven decades and only gave it up because he could no longer get his walker up and down the hilly courses.

SWIMMING SECTIONAL

treynolds@shawmedia.com Dixon senior Laci Long won the sectional title in 1-meter diving for the third straight season, helping the Byron swimming co-op claims its third consecutive team title on Nov. 6 at the Rockford Jefferson Sectional.

Long scored 412.55 points to easily

win the crown for the third straight year. Byron teammate Addison Bausman was second with a score of 381.20.

After the diving portion of the meet in the morning, Long cheered on her teammates in the pool in the afternoon.

Kate Schilling led Byron with wins in the 200 IM (2:05.73) and 100 butterfly (56.88 seconds), and swam legs on the victorious 200 medley (1:48.93) and 400

freestyle (3:36.75) relay teams.

Madi Groharing and Audrey Kilmer joined Schilling in both relays, with Lily Swiech swimming a leg in the 200 medley, and Emily Marshall swimming in the 400 free.

“I love knowing that I gave my team points at the beginning, and they started swimming with the lead,” Long said.

Long will be making her second trip to the suburbs next weekend for the state meet, as she also qualified as a sophomore. There was no state meet last year due to COVID protocols.

Byron scored 269 points, with Hononegah finishing second (198) and Guilford taking third (189). Sterling swam to seventh place with 106 points.

STATE CROSS COUNTRY

Riverdale leads the way at boys State Cross Country

treynolds@shawmedia.com PEORIA – Riverdale led the way for area teams at the IHSA Cross Country Finals on Saturday at Detweiller Park.

Riverdale placed 11th as a team and was led by the All-State performance of junior Tommy Murray, who placed ninth in a time of 15:17 over the threemile course.

“The race went out so fast and I

knew I had to hang on,” Murray said.

“The weather was perfect for racing, but it was so fast. I was hoping to be around the top ten, and then to get ninth is even better. This entire experience is so motivating for next year, and I’m already looking forward to that. I learned a lot today.”

Not to be outdone, teammate Landis Musser finished 24th in 15:33 and also received All-State honors (top 25).

Rounding out the scoring for the team

was Peyton Sand (108th), Cameron Overton (149th) and Caden Ludin (169th).

“This was our first time to qualify as a team in school history, and I’m super proud of this team,” Riverdale coach Kevin Claus said. “To experience this for the first time can be mind-blowing, yet our kids really performed well, and to be 11th in the state is great.”

Amboy-LaMoille-Ohio finished

22nd with 468 points in its first trip to state as a team in program history.

The Clippers were led by the 26th-place finish of Brock Loftus, who ran a time of 15:36, just missing All-State honors by two seconds.

Carson Jones of Polo placed 163rd.

On the girls side, Oregon’s Ella Dannhorn placed 149th (20:10).

Dixon’s Emma Smith received AllState honors in 2A with a 16th-place finish, running 17:47.

16 SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: Nov. 2 At 6:49 p.m., deputies, along with the Rochelle and Hillcrest fire departments, responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Illinois Route 251 and Illinois Route 64. An investigation revealed that a southbound vehicle operated by Shirley Rees, 82, of Steward, failed to yield at the intersection and struck a westbound vehicle operated by Charles Myers, 64, of Mt. Morris.

Rees was transported by Rochelle Fire Department ambulance to Rochelle Community Hospital for minor injuries. Rees was cited for failure to yield at an intersection.

Deputies responded to a suspicious vehicle

complaint in the 200 block of South Division Avenue in Polo at 9:25 p.m. After an investigation, Yancy L. Webster, 56, of Polo, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol, obstructing identification, resisting/obstructing a police officer and violation of the Concealed Carry Act. Ryan T. Dawson, 31, of Polo, was arrested or obstructing identification and resisting/ obstructing a police officer. Both Webster and Dawson also were cited for unlawful transport/possession of open alcohol.

Webster and Dawson were transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 4 At 6:45 a.m., deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet Malibu in the 8000 block of Illinois Route 251

for speeding and improper lane usage. The vehicle fled from the deputy. A pursuit began, but was terminated shortly after it started. After an investigation, the vehicle was located in Steward. The driver, Kory Barber, was taken into custody and charged with aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer, no valid driver’s license, speeding 35-plus over the speed limit and improper lane usage. Barber was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nov. 5 Zachary Mann, 32, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while license suspended and an outstanding Ogle County traffic warrant. Mann was arrested by deputies on Interstate 39 after being stopped for speeding. Mann was held in lieu of bond at

the Ogle County Jail.

At approximately 5:03 p.m., deputies responded to 211 Powers Road in Hillcrest for a two-vehicle crash. After investigation, Laritza Deler-Carcasses, 30, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving on a suspended license.

Deler-Carcasses was transported to the Ogle County Jail. The crash still is under investigation.

At approximately 7:48 p.m., deputies responded to a residence in the 5500 block of West Lightsville Road in Leaf River for a report of a domestic disturbance no longer in progress. After investigation, deputies arrested David A. Stark, 38, of Leaf River, for aggravated domestic battery and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

New web address for state agency

The Illinois Secretary of State’s office has changed its official web address from “cyberdriveillinois. com” to “ILSOS.gov” in a change designed to help combat fraud.

A “.gov” website address designates it as an official government website, which is exclusively provided to federal, state and local government entities, Secretary of State Jesse White said in a press release.

“Changing the website address to ILSOS.gov will help combat fraud at a time when scams designed to defraud Illinoisans have been proliferating,” said White. “Because the new address uses a .gov suffix, you

can rest assured it belongs to a federal, state or local government agency – in this case the Illinois Secretary of State’s office – which adds to your peace of mind when transacting business online with my office.”

White said Illinoisans who type cyberdriveIllinois.com into the browser will be directed to ILSOS. gov.

In addition to the website address

change, White’s office unveiled a redesigned website that is designed to make it easier for the public to locate services quickly. The website prioritizes the most frequently used services, such as driver license, ID card and license plate renewals.

It also breaks down online services into a specific section to help customers who wish to conduct business online.

Popular features, such as Safe Driver Renewal, DL/State ID Card Renewal, Facility Finder, Pick-aPlate, License Plates Renewal and Business Services filings remain prominently featured.

State police list activity for the month of October

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 321 citations, 505 written warnings, and made 14 criminal arrests during the month of October.

Speeding accounted for 179 citations, 19 citations were issued for

occupant restraint violations, and 10 citations were issued for distracted driving violations. There were 29 arrests for no valid driver’s license or driving while license suspended/ revoked.

Troopers investigated 25 traffic crashes, assisted 95 motorists, and conducted 122

commercial motor vehicle inspections, 19 of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. There were 6 arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated no fatal traffic crashes in October.

The congregation of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Polo celebrated their “150+1 Anniversary” on Sunday, Oct. 31, with a special church service and rededication.

“We had a very large celebration scheduled for May 2020, but had to close the church in March [2020] due to the pandemic,” the Rev. Terrie Wilder said.

St. Mark’s remained closed until this March, she said.

They chose to celebrate their anniversary on Oct. 31 because it also is Reformation Day, Wilder said.

Reformation Day is the anniversary of the day Martin Luther is said to have posted his 95 theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, according to Britannica.com.

The event later was identified by Protestants as the start of the Protestant Reformation.

Additionally, each family received a color historical directory about each stained glass window in St. Mark’s,

Wilder said. The directory explained the meaning of each window according to the Scripture and told a little about the family who donated that window, she said.

“There was special music and special litanies and a lot of history and, of

course, a dynamic sermon,” Wilder said.

She said the special music included a children’s bell choir who played “We Are the Church” and “Jesus Loves Me,” and a soloist who sang, “Bless this House.”

The litanies were ones used during the 1928 rededication — which followed a fire that burned the church nearly to the ground — and during the 125th anniversary in 1995, Wilder said.

Litanies are “almost sing-song prayer,” she explained. The reverend speaks, and the congregation responds back.

“We did three different ones, which were really moving,” Wilder said.

A 20-minute presentation of St. Mark’s history kicked off the service, she said.

“A mission developer came and developed with the northern European immigrants — mostly German, but also Finnish, Danish and Swedish — who had been worshipping at various locations throughout town,” Wilder said.

On Aug. 14, 1870, the Rev. Bell — first name unknown — and 37 people adopted a constitution to become a Lutheran church.

In June 1871, the 55-member congregation chose to build the blue limestone church that still exists today. It cost $20,000, a debt that was paid off in six years, Wilder said. They later bought the property for $1,500.

The church’s name was changed from Evangelical Lutheran Church to St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1872.

On March 5, 1928, the church caught fire and all that remained was the stone shell of the building, Wilder said. By Dec. 23, 1928, the church had been rebuilt and was rededicated.

Extensive renovation of the stained glass windows was done in 1968 and, in 1988, St. Mark’s became part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

“We’re a smaller congregation at this time, but back in the past we worshipped a couple hundred people,” Wilder said. “That was a more traditional time.”

Still, St. Mark’s congregation is known for its generosity, she said.

Over the years, St. Mark’s has sent $25,000 to start a new congregation in Alaska; supported missionaries to different countries, including Tanzania, India,

Romania and Honduras; donated to local shelters and juvenile detention homes, including Focus House and Dixon PADS; and more, Wilder said.
