The changes involve where people are allowed to park on South Wesley Avenue and Main, East Front and Center streets between 2 and 6 a.m. There will be more parking options.

“The [new restrictions] will be in effect as soon as the signs go up,” Mt. Morris Village Board Trustee Ed Higley said Nov. 6. “The signs have been ordered.

They should be here later this week.”

The new restrictions will be as follows.

No parking from 2 to 6 a.m. year-round on:

• South Wesley Avenue from Illinois Route 64 to halfway between Center and Lincoln streets • Main Street from Seminary to McKendrie avenues • The north side of East Front Street between South Wesley and South McKendrie avenues.

No parking from 2 to 6 a.m. after 2 inches or more of snow on: • The south side of East Front Street between South Wesley and South McKendrie avenues • Center Street from South Seminary Avenue to halfway between South Wesley and South McKendrie avenues.

The changes were made after a request for accommodations from Lev Levinson, a resident of Countryside Village in Mt. Morris. Countryside Village, located at

106 S. McKendrie Ave., is an apartment building with 33 units and 12 parking spaces.

“We’re thrown onto the street and there aren’t a lot of places to park because it’s downtown,” Levinson, 88, said at the Oct. 24 Mt. Morris Village Board meeting.

“That downtown area on snow days, oddeven parking, is quite a burden on the elderly people to have to get up in the morning and move their cars and move their cars a day before.”

Levinson initially addressed the Village Board in February regarding oddeven parking and the lack of parking options for he and his neighbors. After the February meeting, village officials began working on amending parking restrictions in the area, Village President Phil Labash said.

Farmer Appreciation lunch is Saturday at Leaf River church LEAF RIVER – The Farm Ministry at Leaf River Baptist Church will honor area farmers, farm families and agribusiness professionals by serving lunch, having family-friendly activities and door prizes at the inaugural Farmer Appreciation After Harvest Party.

ehinton@shawmedia.com BYRON – Northern Illinois residents put their boots on the ground last weekend for Trek for Troops, a fundraiser for Darkhorse Lodge which is a retreat for veterans created by two former Byron residents after they lost their son in the war in Afghanistan.

Gretchen Catherwood was one of several walkers who hit the trails at the Stephen and Deirdre Equine Preserve north of Oregon. She was determined not to let her knees stop her from walking 100 miles.

“I did 32 miles yesterday instead of 35. I was just in too much pain that I had to quit,” Gretchen, 59, said Friday.

“This morning so far, this will be the 25th mile. I need 33 today. Tomorrow, I want to do 20 and 25 and then Sunday five to 10 so 100 altogether.”

Friday morning’s walking conditions at the preserve – owned and operated by the Byron Forest Preserve – included clouds and a chilly wind, but no rain.

“We’re hoping the sun makes it out a little today,” Catherwood said.

Lynch received the Medal of Honor after rescuing three wounded soldiers and staying behind to protect them when the rest of the company withdrew during a firefight near My An, Binh Dinh Province in Vietnam.

He was one of several veterans who came to the event Saturday to show their support for the Darkhorse Lodge, a retreat for combat veterans in Springville, Tennessee, recently built by Catherwood and her husband Kirk, former Byron residents.

The Catherwoods decided to build the lodge after their son Alec, 19, was killed while serving with the Marines in Afghanistan on Oct. 14, 2010. He was conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, when he was killed in action.

Alec, a graduate of Byron High School, was one of 25 Marines lost from the 3/5 “Darkhorse” unit. Signs along the trails at the preserve included the name and rank of each of the Marines who were killed in Alec’s 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, also known as the “Darkhorse” battalion.

Here it is a beautiful day with football still being played. Go Marcos!

I am bringing in the last of my plants for the winter. Suddenly we are getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is the month I start making my toffee, especially the boxes that I want to put in the mail.

This year, I decided to put back up the really big tree that has been in storage. It has not been up since we moved to town. Instead of cutting back, I am moving forward with more.

I find when I am active and doing things, I sleep better. I also love the holiday season and getting all the things out we have used in the past.

At the museum, we are moving into the end-of-the-year activities. The membership letter is ready to go out and we have started to think of Christmas. I have been putting together the trolley tour for the Polo

This year we are going to Buffalo Grove or early Polo as we call it – or we even call it “Old Town.” Our trolley tour will take us by Barber’s Park so we can refresh our minds of all that went on in those early days out by “Little Red” as we called it. There was lots of activity in that grove of trees as people would hold old settler reunions.

Buffalo Grove was a bustling place until the railroad wanted to come through and one man kept it out. As a result, Polo came to be and the town of

Buffalo Grove dried up as people left to be part of the new place called Polo.

As we head back to town on our tour, we will hear about Buffalo Grove Cemetery and who is buried there. Our trolley guides this year again will be Mike Faivre and Beth Wiegmann. There will be activity back at the museum, so be sure and remember to place the Polo Christmas celebration on your calendar.

I am excited to put up the aluminum tree we found in the basement at Aplington House. Melody will help me with part of our museum decorating as we get ready for our Christmas party at the museum. Time rolls right along as we get ready for the next event.

Recently we had a great program given by Beverly Coffman. She told us about the Bradford girls and the Darlene’s Silver Streak. That is a super

book about the travels of a group of girls when girls traveling alone simply was not done. Each girl came to the traveling experience with $10 and a can of food. Darlene furnished the car and a can opener.

Their first camping experience was Devil’s Lake in Wisconsin. I could relate to that since Devil’s Lake was the first camping my family did back in the 1940s.

The Bradford girls got to go to the dance pavilion at that camping site and wrote about it in later years. That was off limits for my sister and I but I remember seeing it as a kid.

Interesting how things surface later in life and bring back many memories.

Reunions to Oregon by train by Chicago residents was typical

By OTTO DICK Yearly reunions to Oregon by train were held before the first car from Chicago to Oregon arrived.

The first train arrived in Oregon in 1871.

Many events occurred before the first car drove through Oregon. Margaret Fuller visited Oregon in 1843 and the Civil War occurred from 1861-65.

Abraham Lincoln spoke in Oregon on Aug. 15, 1856, at 505 N. Fourth St. Oregon was established in 1836, 13 years after the Black Hawk War. During this time period there was an influx of immigrants to the Rock River Valley. Most of these were honest and industrious people looking to build their futures.

It’s interesting that in the first 70 years of the existence of Ogle County before cars that so many events occurred.

“The annual reunion of the Ogle County Association of Chicago and Vicinity will be held this year at Margaret Fuller Island near Oregon, Illinois, June 13, 1896. Our Ogle County friends, acquaintances and relatives are anxious to extend a hearty wel-

“A special train will leave over the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Road at 8:30 a.m. from the Union Depot, Canal and Adams streets, Chicago, arriving on return at Chicago at 10:25 p.m. The steamboat Oregon will convey the excursionists and their friends directly to Margaret Fuller Island where a grand picnic dinner will be eaten with our Ogle County friends.

Addresses of welcome and greeting will be made by Ogle County friends and responses and toasts will be given by prominent Chicago people.

“The new steamboat Oregon and barge will be at the disposal of the excursionists, will be taken up the river to view the beautiful scenery, stopping, going and returning at Eagles Nest Bluff, Ganymede Spring and at the new summer resort and picnic grounds, Sinnissippi Heights.

“The excursionists will have about seven hours at Oregon. It is the aim of the committee to make the excursion as restful as possible. There will not be 10 rods of walking from the time we leave Chicago until we return. Hot tea and coffee will be furnished. The rates are $1.95 for the round trip including the steamboat. Excursionists may wish to stay in Ogle County until Monday.”

OREGON – The Coliseum Museum in downtown Oregon is offering several interesting activities and events in November with new artists on display, an artist reception, author book fair and full program for the annual Candlelight Walk.

Dick Cholke of Pecatonica will be the featured artist during November with his display of watercolor paintings.

Instructor and oil painter Stuart Roddy from Coleta is displaying his work in the Lowden Gallery through Dec. 31.

Another continuance in double-homicide case Defense says it needs more time for review

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – Citing the need for more time to review data, the attorney for a Stillman Valley man charged with killing his ex-wife and their 3-year-old son in 2016 asked for and received another month to evaluate forensic reports expected to be used by prosecutors at his client’s trial.

Christopher DeRango, the attorney for Duane Meyer, 41, told Ogle County Judge John “Ben” Roe that he had received some of the data from the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s office, but now needed more time for a defense expert to review it.

“I received some materials today, but it will be some period of time before my expert can review it,” DeRango said.

Meyer is charged with four counts of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death in connection with the Oct. 19, 2016, Byron house fire in which Margaret “Maggie” (Rosko) Meyer, 31, was

found dead. Their son, 3-year-old Amos Meyer, also was home at the time of the fire and later died.

On Sept. 26, DeRango requested and received a continuance telling Duane Meyer Roe that he was asking for more time for his expert to review reports provided by prosecutors and to file another discovery motion for any other additional data.

On Monday, DeRango said some of the information sought “may not exist” while other requests may be objected to by prosecutors.

Ogle County Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten said the state had provided DeRango with “major forensic copies, including phone records.

“At this point, this is what we can produce,” Leisten told Roe. DeRango said the date was so voluminous that it could not be sent electronically for a defense expert to review.

“Because of the volume of the data, I had to overnight it, so I am asking another status hearing be set,”

DeRango said.

The state did not object to the continuance and Roe set the next court date for 9 a.m. Dec. 12.

In January, DeRango entered 21 motions in limine and asked that they be sealed before debate in open court.

During a May 4 hearing, DeRango asked Roe to exclude information gathered by the prosecution from being presented to a jury arguing some of it was “irrelevant” or would be “prejudicial” to his client.

The purpose of a motion in limine (Latin for “on the threshold”) is to determine whether certain evidence may be presented to the jury.

Motions in limine are commonly entered and argued before a trial begins, allowing evidentiary questions to be decided by the judge. The motions are made by attorneys when seeking to exclude certain evidence from being presented to a jury.

Some of the motions made pertain to crime scene photos, autopsy photos, internet searches, cellphone photos, text messages between Meyer and others, surveillance videos of vehicles and comments made to police officers during the investigation.

At that time, Leisten argued that

the evidence was relevant and, based on case law, should be allowed, adding that “the jury can weigh the evidence.”

DeRango said there were 6,000 pages of discovery and more than 1,000 text messages between Meyer and a friend before the deaths.

He said the messages were made in the midst of a “contentious divorce” and, he argued, some of the messages were taken out of context and should not be allowed as evidence.

Leisten disagreed, arguing that the messages showed it was a “planned homicide” and showed “what was going on in the defendant’s mind.”

Roe has yet to rule on all the motions in limine.

Maggie (Rosko) Meyer, a teacher at the Chana Education Center, filed for divorce in 2014. Court records show the divorce was finalized in September 2016.

Monday’s hearing was one of many since murder charges were filed in October 2019.

In November 2022, Roe ruled that Duane Meyer’s cellphone records would be allowed as evidence at the trial.

Meyer remains in the Ogle County Correctional Center on a $10 million bond.

Oregon man pleads not guilty to possessing images of child sexual abuse

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A rural Oregon man pleaded not guilty to possessing images of child sexual abuse when he appeared in Ogle County court Nov. 1.

Kris D. Stubblefield, 32, was arraigned on eight counts of possessing images after being arrested last month by Ogle County sheriff’s deputies who received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Stubblefield’s home, located east Kris D. Stubblefield of Oregon, was searched Oct. 12 after a monthslong investigation. He was arrested Oct. 21 and charged Oct. 22 with possession of six videos of children engaged in sex acts and two lewd photos of children. Charging documents said all of the children were under the age of 13 and some were as young as 3.

On Nov. 1, Stubblefield appeared before Ogle County Judge John Redington in shackles.

Ogle County Public Defender Michael O’Brien said his client intended to waive

his right to a preliminary hearing and enter a not guilty plea.

“Is that what you want to do?” Redington asked.

“That is true,” Stubblefield replied.

O’Brien also entered a jury trial demand, a common procedural step in most criminal felony cases.

Redington set the next pretrial date for 1:30 p.m. Nov. 9.

Nov. 1 was the second time Stubblefield appeared in court. He made his initial appearance Oct. 24 before Judge Clayton Lindsey, when Assistant Ogle County State’s Attorney Heather Kruse argued to keep Stubblefield in custody, citing reports from the Illinois attorney general and sheriff’s office that he is registered as a juvenile sex offender and was in possession of more than 1,500 images of children engaged in sex acts with adults and some with other children.

Kruse said the photos and videos were found on Stubblefield’s phone.

When police searched his home, he agreed to speak to law enforcement and told one Ogle County sheriff’s detective that he was a “purveyor of taboo material,” Kruse said.

“The defendant also used file-sharing services to share files and to access ‘chats’ on how to find files,” Kruse said.

“Because of his admissions to detectives

about downloading and storing these images, he poses a real and present threat to the community and the public.”

She said other cases when Stubblefield was a juvenile show “an ongoing problem, especially with younger children.” She argued he should remain in jail because “there is no way to monitor him.”

Public defender Kathleen Isley argued for Stubblefield’s release, citing his cooperation with law enforcement.

“We do acknowledge this is an extremely serious offense. He does have a juvenile record from when he was a teen that has been adjudicated and he has remained on the sex offender list,” Isley said Oct. 24.

Isley said there was no indication that Stubblefield had failed to report or to be monitored. She said he did not elude law enforcement in any way and he has no history of violence. She argued that any conditions for his release could be controlled by the court to mitigate any threat to the public.

Lindsey said the charges were too serious to allow his release, noting 1,500 files were found and there was a huge public concern over child pornography and human trafficking. Stubblefield’s juvenile convictions also weighed on the decision to keep him in jail, Lindsey said.

Redington agreed, denying the defense’s motion for a pretrial release.

The Illinois State Police and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, both of which work through the Illinois Crimes Against Children task force to target abusive crimes against children, assisted in the investigation. Charging documents indicate the offenses occurred in August and October.

A smashing good time in Byron ... unless you were a pumpkin

ehinton@shawmedia.com BYRON – The Byron Fire Station was the place to be Nov. 1.

The same cannot be said for jack-o’lanterns.

Byron firefighters held their annual Pumpkin Smash Event from 4 to 6 p.m., allowing residents to bring their pumpkins to the station and make a grand exit by dropping the pumpkins from the fire tower onto the parking lot.

A steady stream of kids and their parents carried, pulled and sometimes rolled pumpkins to the station to be dropped from the tower onto a bull’seye painted on a portion of the parking lot.

“It blew up,” said Stanley Voyles, 10, of Byron, who casually recalled the fall of his pumpkin as he sipped on cider inside the station.

Quixton Atlee, 6, of Byron hustled his big pumpkin across the parking lot to the access door to the tower. He

climbed to the top and with the aid of a firefighter pushed the big orange gourd off the rail.

Kelsey Warner and her two boys, Benjamin, 3, and Joseph, 7, also carried their pumpkins to the tower where Kelsey helped Benjamin give his pumpkin a final ride to the cement.

“It brings the community together and the kids are super excited,” said Paul Brantner, a lieutenant with the fire department.

In between tosses, Byron firefight-

ers used scoop shovels to slide the remains into a dumpster. Spectators could enjoy cold or hot cider and doughnuts served by Byron Park District representatives inside the fire station.

“I think we had 15 dozen doughnuts and 10 gallons of cider,” said Nick Warner, superintendent of parks for the Byron Park District.

The pumpkin smashing event has been held for about 30 years, organizers said.

Judge finds Rochelle man guilty of attempted arson, possession of explosive device OREGON – A Rochelle man was found guilty of attempted arson and possession of an explosive device after a bench trial in Ogle County on Oct. 26.

Adam K. Bergeron, 25, was found guilty of the offenses by Ogle County Judge John “Ben” Roe. “On Aug. 7, 2022, Rochelle police responded to the 400 block of Cherry

Oregon firefighters used one of their rescue boats to transport a 10-year-old child from the east bank of the Rock River below the Lorado Taft Field Campus after she injured her knee while walking down the trail to the river. Oregon Fire Chief Michael Knoup said the decision was made to transport her by boat to an ambulance at the public docks, located along Illinois 2, so first responders would not have to risk carrying her back up the trail. Knoup said the girl was with a school group that was staying at the Taft Campus.

Victor Jesus Castillo-Vasquez, 27, of Neenah, Wisconsin, was arrested at 8:54 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 7000 block of North Kishwaukee Road. Castillo-Vasquez also was issued citations for suspended registration and operating an uninsured vehicle. Castillo-Vasquez was transported to the Ogle County jail where he was released on a notice to appear and given a future court date.

Jose Ramirez Vazquez, 39, of Elgin, was arrested at 7:22 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 6000 block of North River Road. Ramirez Vazquez also was issued a citation for operating an uninsured vehicle. Ramirez Vazquez was released on a notice to appear at the scene and given a future court date.

Yeison Uriel Ulloa Veliz, 22, of Milledgeville, was arrested at 7:33 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop at the intersection of Freeport and Millegeville roads. Ulloa Veliz also was issued citations for no headlights when required and illegal window tint. Ulloa Veliz was transported to the Ogle County jail where he was released on a notice to

Scruggs was transported to the Ogle County jail where she was processed and released with a notice to appear. The violations occurred in the 500 block of North Fourth Street.

Oct. 28 Alexis A. McKeown, 57, of Princeton, was issued a citation at 7:38 p.m. for operating a motor vehicle when registration is suspended for no insurance. The violation occurred in the 400 block of 10th Street.

Three parking citations and two verbal warnings were issued Oct. 23-29.

At 3:59 p.m., deputies arrived at 3279 South Illinois Route 251 regarding a reported battery. After an investigation, a 15-year-old juvenile male was taken into limited custody for battery. The juvenile was transported to the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center. The 15-yearold male victim was taken to Rochelle Hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Yilber Sorza-Mayorga, 26, of Rochelle, was arrested at 11:13 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop in the area of East Illinois Route 38 and Brush Grove Road. Sorza-Mayorga also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and no taillights. Sorza-Mayorga was released with a notice to appear.

Last month’s column presented a definition of reading fluency along with suggestions for supporting reading practices at home to help build fluency. There are several factors that need to be in place for a reader to become fluent. We will look at one aspect this month and others over the next two columns.

An early factor that is key for fluency is that children need to learn to hear, identify and move or change sounds in spoken words. The smallest unit of sound in a language is called a phoneme. So this skill is called phonemic awareness.

An important part of this is that we are talking about spoken words. Some say you can work on phonemic awareness in the dark because you do not have to look at words. It is oral work.

In recent years reading researchers have been able to look at brain imaging to help determine how reading works in the brain. One of their findings is that the brain processes

READING MATTERS Mary Gardner words by their sounds. Being able to hear sounds in words becomes a vital early reading skill to get children ready to learn to read.

There are several phonemic awareness skills that we work on to build a foundation for children to be able to read, or decode, words. One is isolating sounds. That is identifying a specific sound in a word such as “What is the beginning sound in the word pig?”

The child would answer” /p/.” (A letter written in between forward slashes indicates we are talking about the sound of the letter.) Or we might ask “What is the ending sound in the word hat?” The child would answer “/t/.” Many times families work on this, perhaps without knowing the

benefit, when they are working on learning the alphabet and the sounds of the letters. We ask children to find a picture that starts with a certain letter, for example.

To decode, or read, words children must be able to separate the sounds of the letters in a word. Two important phonemic awareness skills we work on orally are segmenting and blending. Segmenting is breaking a word apart into its individual sounds. For example, I might say, “Can you tell me all the sounds you hear in the word bug?” The child would say “/b/ -/u/- /g/. “ Blending is putting the sounds back together. We might ask, “What word do these sounds make /h/-/o/-/p/?” The child would say “hop.” If you think about reading, or writing, a word, you can see how we need to be able to segment and blend sounds.

More difficult phonemic awareness skills involve changing the sounds in words by taking away or adding

sounds or by substituting a new sound. For practice deleting sounds we might say, “Say the word sit without the /s/.” The child would say “it.”

An example of adding sounds would be, “Say the word top. Add /s/ at the beginning and the new word is? The child would say “stop.” For substitution we might say, “Say the word pin.

Change the /p/ in pin to /w/.” The child would say the new word is “win.”

Phonemic awareness skills must be directly taught and that will happen at school. However, playing with language, reading silly poems or singing silly songs all support our children’s and grandchildren’s ability to begin to hear sounds in words which is a foundational skill for learning to read.

Vietnam veteran Allen Ayers, 83, of Mundelein, was making his third Trek for Troops. As a Marine, Ayers said honoring the Darkhorse Marine unit that suffered the highest casualty rate of any Marine unit during the Afghan war was especially significant for him.

“I think Darkhorse Lodge is a good idea,” said Ayers, a member of the Lake County Honor Flight organization. “It’s really something to be able to honor that largest loss for a Marine unit in that battle. These Marines gave their lives for us and that’s lot of sacrifice.”

Participants did not have to walk in person at the Byron Forest Preserve, located along River Road between Oregon and Byron. They could walk the entire distance themselves or break it up into teams.

Patches were earned according to miles walked.

“They are cumulative so keep track from year to year and we will send them for you and your team members when you submit your trek totals,” Catherwood said.

The Lodge opened in September and will start hosting veterans for free in the spring.

More about Allen Lynch

Lynch served in the 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) from May 1967 until June 1968. He had been “in country” for six months and was serving as a specialist four in Company D, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) on Dec. 15, 1967.

During a firefight near My An, Binh Dinh Province in Vietnam, Lynch rescued three wounded soldiers and stayed behind to protect them when the rest of the company withdrew.

He received the Medal of Honor after he “single-handedly defended the wounded men” against enemy attack until locating a friendly force that could

evacuate them. He was promoted to sergeant and awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions.

The medal was formally presented to him by President Richard Nixon in 1970.

After receiving the medal, Lynch served as a veterans benefits counselor and later chief of ambulatory care with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He served as the executive director of the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program in Illinois. He left that position in 1985 to become the chief of the Veterans Rights Bureau with the Illinois Attorney General’s office, retiring in 2005.

He served with the U.S. Army Reserve and the Illinois National Guard until his retirement with 21 years of service in 1994 and then founded the Allen J. Lynch Medal of Honor Veterans Foundation.

The Foundation originally was formed to provide funding to needy veterans and their families in order to assist in their recovery from financial hardships.

“Recognizing a greater need, we have transitioned to aiding veteran-friendly organizations through leveraging our partners and sponsors to provide greater assistance than we could otherwise provide by ourselves. We provide substantial funds to programs without much effort on their part. This aid, however, is dependent on your contributions which will help multiple veteran-friendly organizations preforming support for many more veterans,” according to the foundation’s website.

“Our organization is operated by a staff of energetic volunteers. We work closely with our partner organizations by providing grants to those who are engaged in providing educational programs and direct assistance.”

The foundation will hold its first fundraising dinner on Feb. 16, 2024, at the Hoffman House in Rockford.

Polo avenges loss to Milledgeville

Marcos advance to semis in 8-man playoff action

kchlum@shawmedia.com MILLEDGEVILLE – Two months ago, Polo was blown out by 36 points at the hands of rival Milledgeville.

Polo coach Ted Alston said the Marcos didn’t play to their potential in that meeting.

On Nov. 4, behind a dominant performance by Brock Soltow and improved line play on both sides of the ball, No. 6 Polo avenged the earlier loss, beating the No. 3 Missiles 28-6 in an Illinois 8-Man Football Association quarterfinal.

“It means a lot,” Alston said. “We played so poorly in that regular-season game [a 58-22 loss]. We were so disappointed. I know the kids were terribly disappointed in that game. We’ve improved a lot since then.

“I can’t be any prouder of the kids right now with the way they responded and the way they just ignored everyone telling them they couldn’t beat these guys. They came out here and played a great game.”

The Marcos (9-2) advanced to the semifinals, where they’ll look to avenge their other loss against No. 2 Amboy-LaMoille-Ohio (11-0) at 1 p.m.

Saturday in Polo. The Clippers beat Polo 52-6 in Week 9.

Amboy advanced to the semifinals with a 62-7 rout of No. 7 Flanagan-Cornell/Woodland.

“It’s going to be a battle again, just like Milledgeville,” Soltow said. “We get them at home this time, so it’s going to feel amazing with a big crowd and everything.”

On Nov. 4, Soltow did it all for the Marcos. He ran for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass, threw a touchdown pass and intercepted a pass in the end zone.

“It feels good to do this against our biggest rivals,” said Soltow, who ran for 239 yards on 27 carries. “I wouldn’t be able to do it without Carter [Merdian] and our offensive line.”

Soltow put the Marcos ahead early when he broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run on their first possession.

Milledgeville responded quickly as quarterback Connor Nye scored on a 3-yard run on the Missiles’ first drive, a touchdown that was set up by a 55-yard pass from Nye to Micah TomsSmith.

From there, the Polo defense kept Milledgeville off the scoreboard.

won us this game,” Alston said. “The biggest play defensively is we were much, much more disciplined, but also offensively being able to control the ball and run clock was huge for us keeping their offense off the field.”

Polo’s second drive started with 7:01 left in the first quarter and ended 13 plays later on an 8-yard run by Soltow with 11:13 left in the second quarter. On the play before Soltow’s TD, the Missiles were called for a defensive holding on fourth down to extend the drive.

The Marcos then took control.

Milledgeville drove down to the Polo 3-yard line, but the Marcos tackled Konner Johnson for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-goal from the 4. Polo marched 95 yards in five minutes, capping the drive with a 15-yard TD pass from Merdian to Soltow on fourth down with 20.9 seconds left.

go, ‘Let me catch it, Coach,’ ” Soltow said. “I had trust in Carter. We’ve always done that in practice. It felt great.”

The late touchdown gave Polo a 20-8 halftime lead.

“That was absolutely huge,” Alston said. “We were in a situation here last year where we were up at halftime and they came out and just took it to us. For us to get that stop, that wouldn’t have happened Week 3. They would have scored. We got that stop and were able to run the clock out and score.

“That was a huge chain of events for us.”

In the second half, Soltow intercepted a pass in the end zone to end

Milledgeville’s first possession, then led a 9:57 drive, lofting a 23-yard TD pass to Landen Brooks with 7:46 left to go up 28-8.

Brooks intercepted a screen pass on first-and-goal with 5:10 left and the Marcos ran the clock under a minute left before turning the ball over on downs.

“It feels great,” Soltow said. “The first time we played them in Week 3, we looked rough. It was definitely our worst game. Our offensive line did amazing [today]. That’s what won us the game.”

For the Missiles, who finished 9-2, Connor Nye ran for 97 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and completed 6-of-13 passes for 151 yards.

It was off to Peoria for the state cross county meet this past weekend. I hadn’t covered the state meet for a few years and after my alma mater Rochelle and hometown Oregon lost playoff games, I felt like a break from football anyway.

Compared with a year ago when the course was a mud bath, it was a perfect day for running with sunny skies, negligible winds and ideal temps. Admittedly, football is more exciting to watch than cross country, but what a joy to witness a sea of runners at Detweiller Park, along with family and friends supporting them.

If your kid is on the cross country team, you better believe that sport is more important to you than the more popular football or volleyball. When I was in high school, I never would have done cross country because of the work it entailed. Credit to the young people who do.

I’ve developed an affinity for it much later in life. It’s kind of like eating lima beans. Never would have eaten them when younger, but now they taste good.

In assessing the state meet, the balance of power for the small schools is in the central and southern parts of the state, not so much in northern Illinois anymore.

Of the top 100 finishers for the Class

On the boys side, Rockford Christian (8th) and Winnebago (12th) still hold their own and Byron sophomore Tim Starwalt was 32nd out of 256 competitors, only seven spots away from allstate status. Still, it was schools such as Tuscola, Benton and Elmwood dominating, none of which have soccer.

For larger 2A and 3A schools, there are plenty of kids to support both cross country and soccer. For 1A, not so much and often the best runners at a school opt for soccer instead.

Likewise with volleyball. Its popularity easily surpasses long-distance running among high school girls. There is glamour in volleyball and not in cross country.

It was disappointing that only eight of the 64 football playoff games last week were on Friday. Granted, there is a better chance of milder weather during the daytime, but we’re not in the dead of winter. Just because a team

played the Saturday before doesn’t mean it can’t come back on a Friday, but hardly anyone ever does.

Coaches cite that rest is needed.

That’s hogwash. These are able-bodied teenagers with all kinds of energy.

In the early years of the playoffs, teams played on both Wednesday and Saturday of the first week. Nobody seemed to be tired from that endeavor.

Why would you be? There’s an intoxicating element to being in the playoffs.

With Stillman Valley and Forreston losing second-round games, Ogle County is down to Byron and Polo.

Forreston losing to Le-Win was not a surprise, but a running clock with 2:27 left in the third quarter was a surprise. Not much more to say. Le-Win has built such a dynasty that Forreston, one of the elite programs in 1A, can’t even compete with them anymore.

With how powerful Le-Win has become, there is no shame in that. Even with the loss, Forreston has to be considered one of the top five teams in the state for 2023.

Polo defeating Milledgeville in 8-man was not an upset, though the Missiles took it to the Marcos 58-22 in the regular season. I covered the earlier game and it appeared both teams were

evenly matched, but Milledgeville made plays and Polo did not.

What is hard to figure is how Milledgeville scored 58 points in the first game and only six in the second one?

Getting back to Friday night football, there is only one Friday night game in the third round and it is between two unlikely quarterfinalists, Sandwich and Wheaton Academy in 4A. Sandwich’s program was so demoralized that it couldn’t even field a varsity team last year. Additionally, they have three bad losses this year.

Wheaton is 10-1, but plays a weak schedule and lost to a 1A opponent.

So how did these two reach the quarterfinals?

It’s all about the luck of the draw with several weak teams in the same 8-team quadrant. One of them will have the good fortune of reaching the semifinals.

With so many good schools such as Forreston getting knocked out early, it doesn’t seem fair. However, the IHSA doesn’t seed teams on ability, but on a non-biased formula.

Second-half surge lifts Lena-Winslow over Forreston

LENA – It’s hard to play chess against an opponent who is playing Battleship.

In a Class 1A second-round playoff game Nov. 4, Lena-WInslow scored direct hit after direct hit on NUIC rival Forreston, ending the Cardinals’ season for the third straight year with a 46-14 victory.

“I’m going to miss and admire our seniors,” Forreston coach Keynon Janicke said. “They gave it everything they had. I still think we’re a pretty good football team.”

Despite the final score, the first half was tightly contested, filled with tension and strategizing.

Both teams used defensive timeouts in short-yardage situations with Forreston getting the better of Le-Win on each of the subsequent plays. Even so, the Cardinals trailed 16-6 late in the second quarter when they were stopped on fourth down in Panthers territory.

A Le-Win touchdown on the ensuing drive put Forreston in a precarious position down 22-6 and set to kick the ball away to start the second half.

“Our kids played well in the first half, but their kids did, too,” Le-Win coach Ric Arand said. “They were throwing a few different defensive fronts at us and I don’t think we were doing a good job identifying those fronts.

Cobryn Lynch was responsible for the second-quarter touchdown, recording all of his 126 rushing yards and two TDs before halftime exclusively on jet sweep runs.

Any hopes Forreston had of mounting a second-half comeback similar to its 2021 regular-season victory at Le-Win were dashed on the first play from scrimmage after halftime when Gage Dunker ran off tackle for a 68-yard touchdown.

After being contained to 43 yards on 11 carries in the first half, Dunker went crazy in the third quarter, scoring three times en route to a 19-carry, 179-yard performance.

“We just weren’t where we needed to be and didn’t make the moves we needed to make,” Janicke said.

“They’re a tough team and they’re well-coached.”

Forreston’s best play throughout

The winner of the Byron/Du-Pec game will face the winner of the Princeton (10-1)/Lombard Montini (8-3) game on Saturday, Nov. 18, in the state semifinals.

Other 3A teams in contention for the state title are Tolono (Unity), Mt. Carmel, Stanford (Olympia) and Roxana.
