ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – The 7-foot cigar has vanished, but its smoke still lingers on a downtown mural.

City commissioners agreed Oct. 10 to send a letter to the owners of Bad Ash Cigars, 110 N. Fourth St., informing them in writing of a 7-10 day deadline to paint over the cigar – and its smoke plume.

The cigar was painted over before the deadline, leaving just its label, but a stream of smoke above it remained as of Tuesday.

“The council decided that the cigar and its smoke had to be removed and the smoke is still there,” City Manager Darin DeHaan said Tuesday.

DeHaan said the city could start fining the business for not adhering to its instructions.

“The council wanted the fines to start yesterday,” he said Tuesday.

City officials said the inclusion of the cigar in the mural violated the city’s ordinance for commercial signs. In August, the City Council delayed action on a sign variance after business owners said they needed more time to remedy the issue.

A variance was needed because the 4½-foot-wide-by-7-foot-tall cigar was painted directly onto the mural, transforming the entire mural into a sign exceeding the city’s maximum sign size, DeHaan said.

Commercial signs are not to exceed 50 square feet. DeHaan said the owner’s

DeHaan said the city was not against murals or the business’s name.

“We have a mural grant program providing $5,000 each for the downtown murals and we have three in the pipeline,” he said in August as he read from a PowerPoint presentation. “Is the city against Bad Ash? No, we have worked with the owners to save the former theater and even provided $190,000 in cash and business incentives.”

Wynn said there was a misunderstanding when the cigar was added to the mural and “everyone else in town perceives this as a mural” and only city commissioners saw it as a sign.

But Commissioner Melanie Cozzi said she reviewed text messages between the city and Wynn’s co-owners and did not see any misunderstanding.

On Oct. 10, DeHaan asked the council for direction after Wynn told him the delay for a new design was because the artist who painted the mural was out of town on another project. DeHaan said painting over the cigar would have to be completed before cold weather.

The sign – as long as it does not exceed 50-square feet – can be attached to the building, but not as part of the mural, DeHaan said.

Cozzi said the owners were supposed to have submitted a sign design to the council for approval. She also questioned whether the smoke plume coming from the cigar will be painted over.

ehinton@shawmedia.com OREGON – A tip to the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children resulted in the arrest of a rural Oregon man and registered sex offender who is now charged with eight counts of possessing images of child sexual abuse.

Kris D. Stubblefield, 32, made his Kris D. Stubblefield initial appearance Tuesday before Ogle County Court Judge Clayton Lindsey.

Stubblefield is facing three to seven years in prison on each count, each of which involve images of children that, according to the charging document, he knew or should have known were younger than 13, with some as young as 3.

If convicted, Stubblefield also would be required to register as a sex offender for life and could be fined $1,000 to $10,000.

According to the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office and testimony Tuesday, Stubblefield’s home was searched Oct.

12 after a monthslong investigation.

He was arrested Oct. 21 and charged the next day with possession of six videos of children engaged in sex acts and two lewd photos involving children.

Stubblefield is being held in the Ogle County Correctional Center now that a petition to detain filed by the state’s attorney was granted Tuesday.

Stubblefield still could appeal the decision.

Stubblefield’s next status hearing is Wednesday.

Assistant State’s Attorney Heather Kruse argued Tuesday to keep Stubblefield in custody, citing reports from the attorney general and the sheriff’s office that he is a registered sex offender and was in possession of more than 1,500 images of children engaged in sex acts with adults and some with other children.

Photos and videos were found on his phone, Kruse said.

When police searched his home, he agreed to speak to law enforcement and told one Ogle County detective that he was a “purveyor of taboo material,” she said.

“The defendant also used file-sharing services to share files and to access ‘chats’ on how to find files,” Kruse said. “Because of his admissions to detectives about downloading and storing these images, he poses a real and present threat to the community and the public.”

Other cases when Stubblefield was a juvenile show “an ongoing problem, especially with younger children,” Kruse said. He should remain in jail because “there is no way to monitor him,” she said.

Public Defender Kathleen Isley argued for Stubblefield’s release, citing his cooperation with law enforcement.

“We do acknowledge this is an extremely serious offense. He does have a juvenile record from when he was teen that has been adjudicated and he has remained on the sex offender list,” Isley said.

“There is no indication that he has failed to report or to be monitored. He did not elude law enforcement in any way, and he has no history of violence.

Any conditions for his release could be controlled by the court to mitigate any threat to the public.”

If released, Stubblefield has agreed to comply with limitations restricting his access to the internet, she said.

Lindsey said the charges were too serious to allow his release.

“Over 1,500 files were found. There is a huge public concern over child pornography and human trafficking,” Lindsey said. “The recency of his alleged conduct is a concern to the court.”

Stubblefield’s juvenile convictions weighed on his decision to keep him in jail, the judge said.

“It is disturbing that the victims in

those offenses were also young children, the same of what he is downloading here. The community at large is under a threat,” he said.

The defense also did not offer an effective way to monitor Stubblefield’s computer use 24/7, Lindsey said.

The Illinois State Police and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, both of which work through the Illinois Crimes Against Children task force to target abusive crimes against children, assisted in the investigation.

100 Women Who Care donate to Believe in the Children 100 Women Who Care of Ogle County voted to give a donation of $7,700 to Believe in the Children of Forreston on Oct. 19.

“Believe in the Children is a notfor-profit organization which aims to support families in crisis. Their main goal is to keep families together by providing necessary resources and services. One of the things they provide is a place for family members to meet and find support. They also provide foster care in order to keep siblings together and give children support and needed stability,” said Deanna Forrest, one of the members of 100 Women Who Care of Ogle County.

“This is the second time 100 Women Who Care has donated to this organization. At that time the money was going toward completing the renovations of a Sibling Home and Youth Enrichment Center at 220 S. First Ave. in Forreston.

Family interested in Schryver Native American display

The Waterbury descendant from the state of Washington is back home but a member of the Waterbury family from Minnesota will be arriving this week.

So I got all of the pictures of the family back out along with all of the information for Kathryn to look at again. Kathryn lives in Minnesota and has visited Polo several times.

The last time Kathryn was here, she took a copy of the manuscript of Zenas Aplington’s letters to his wife while he was in the Civil War. She has recopied them so they can be placed on the internet for many to read. She is bringing back the copy of the manuscript so it can be put back in our file.

We are beginning to place more of our history on the internet. Perhaps you have noticed more about the Polo Historical Society on Facebook. We

Kathryn will look through the Waterbury history to see if anything new has come into the museum. As family members pass on, more information and pictures arrive at the Polo Historical Society. So there will be new things when she arrives this week.

This past week, we had the family of Vern Cassens arrive in Polo. The children of Vern and Jean Ditzler Cassens never had visited the museum and it was nice to have the family

spend some of their time seeing what we have done in the museum.

They were especially interested in the Schryver Native American display since Vern and Jean were instrumental in getting that collection for the Polo Historical Society.

The collection had been in the library since 1942 and I remember as a schoolgirl going to the library to see the collection. It got to the point where the library simply was not a museum and the collection was placed in a bank vault. Vern and Jean donated $10,000 to the library so the collection could be given to the Polo Historical Society.

It was a great day when the Schryver Native American collection came to the museum and Ed Olsen and Merle McCaffrey made the beautiful cabinets to hold the display.

Since then we have added the Dale Blough collection and Polo is most fortunate to have all this housed at the museum.

This week we also said goodbye to Carla Singley and it is with great sadness that we do so. Carla worked with me for a number of years giving tours to the schoolchildren. I started bringing students to the museum when I retired from teaching and Carla joined me when she retired.

The last time she helped us was a year ago when we had 90 seventh and eighth graders. Carla loved to talk about the country schools and she handled Henry School when we did school tours. We will miss her greatly.

Newspaper account tells of ‘frisky horses’ in 1901

By OTTO DICK This article from the 1901 Ogle County Republican Newspaper relays a story about numerous runaway horses.

“On Thursday, a runaway occurred by our creamery man George C. Hopkins while driving across the bridge accompanied by F.B. Gale. The horse decided to travel at a clip too fast for Hopkins and Gale, who cautiously decided to jump from the cutter. The horse took the right of way from Oregon north to Mud Creek with greater speed than the proposed electric railway.”

The proposed electric railroad route was from Dixon through Oregon and ending in Rockford.

“The cutter showed damage, but the horses came out in fair condition. The two men congratulated each other because they both had sufficient insurance to cover an accident.

“A team owned by Thos. Stinson and driven by one of his assistants was bringing in a load of wood. The hitch broke when he was coming down the

steep hill east of the Oregon Bridge.

The team ran across the bridge, turning at Washington Street toward their barn and collided with a sleigh and team owned by a man named Kruger.

Kruger’s team broke loose and shot north on Fourth Street and collided with a rig owned by the Holmes Bros. of Lynnville, who had just arrived in town and were unhitching their team

radio, movies, media and advertising and how Neil Reagan influenced the success of Ronald Reagan’s political career.

The events occurred during the mayoral term of Charles Schneider, who was Oregon’s 10th mayor. The first car passed through Oregon the following year. With the train coming through Oregon in 1871, our first Oregon mayors used horse and train transportation or walked.

As usual it is the wording and sentencing that is interesting to read. I am required to interpret the language they used back in those days. Today, cars replace accidents that once were caused by horses that were frisky.

Carol married Duane Garkey (deceased 2015) on Nov. 1, 1953. They had five children: Cindy (Mike) Sullivan of Polo; Jan of Fitchburg, Wisconsin; Dave (Lori) of Winnebago; Susan Busser (deceased); and Rod (Deb Bryan) of Polo. She has seven grandchildren (and one deceased) and five great-grandchildren.

After graduating from high school, Carol worked as a teller at the bank in Mt. Morris while Duane finished military service. Once her children

were in school, she owned and operated The Lunch Box, a mobile lunch stand that she took to auctions.

Carol sold crafts at Autumn Carol Garkey on Parade for many years. She also worked part time at Charley’s Pharmacy in Polo.

Carol currently is the owner and operator of The Christmas Cupboard, a crafts, vintage and antiques store in Polo. An active member of St Mark’s Lutheran Church, she assists the Quilters and is on the Second Hand Rose Board.

For Shaw Local News Network POLO – Members and guests of Polo American Legion Patrick Fegan Post 83 gathered Oct. 10 at the Polo Senior Center for the post’s Awards and Appreciation Reception.

Post commander Cynthia Reynolds welcomed everyone and thanked them for coming. She said the post was increasingly trying to do more for the community and it was appropriate to acknowledge and thank those who have helped in the efforts by presenting them with certificates and awards.

Noting the importance of membership, Reynolds acknowledged long-standing post members, starting with Roy Wolber for 55 years of continuous service. Kent Nettz, Vernon Shenefelt, Michael Singley, Thomas Smith, Marvin VanOosten and Steve VanOosten were recognized for 50 years, Edward Pope for 45 years, Leo Reinstra and Myrle Moeller for 40 years, Donald Much for 35 years, William Foley and Dan Ford for 30 years, Larry Meador and Larry Plachno for 25 years and Jeffrey Haugen for 20 years.

Reynolds presented certificates to those who helped with post events. Recognized for helping with the Beer Brat Lunch fundraiser were Joe Wilson, Becky Jo Davis, Mike Tate, James Reynolds and Marddi Rahn.

Performing Arts Guild announces winter show

MT. MORRIS – The Performing Arts Guild will present its Winter Medley performance Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 8-10, at the Pinecrest Grove Theatre.

“The Gift of the Magi,” “Baker’s Dozen,” “Christmas Truce” and selections from “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” will be presented. There will be a mixture of comedy and drama throughout the performances.

Aireloom Music Studio will be entertaining the audience throughout the show.

“This is one performance you’ll want to be a part of,” Deb Ballard, a PAG member, said in a news release.

German Valley Historical Museum open Oct. 29

The German Valley Historical Museum, 805 Church St., will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29.

At 1:30 p.m., Donna Smith will present “Those Were the Days: History Highlights of German Valley.” She will transport the audience back in time by talking about the Pleasant Prairie Academy, local businesses, early German settlers, bank robbers, motorcycle races and more.

OBITUARIES CARLA N. SINGLEY Born: September 23, 1948 in Dixon, IL Died: October 16, 2023 in Freeport, IL Carla N. Singley, 75, of Polo, passed away Monday, October 16, 2023, at Freeport Hospital. Carla was born September 23, 1948, in Dixon, Illinois, the daughter of Richard and Dorothy (Dennis) Kjolsing. On March 25, 1967, in Polo, she married Michael Singley.

Carla was a well respected school teacher for 30 years with Polo Community School District. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Carla was a devoted follower of Christ and a great woman of faith. She loved her work and the

children she was so blessed to teach. Carla and her husband started Singley Construction in 1969 and still operates today.

Survivors include husband Michael Singley; mother Dorothy Kjolsing; sons Steven (Cheryl) Singley of Vernon Hills, IL, Jeffery (Dawn) Singley of Forreston, IL; brother Wyman (Cindy) Kjolsing of Fort Dodge, IA; grandchildren Jordan (Jason) Piske of South Elgin, IL, Michael Singley and Hayden Singley both of Forreston, IL; great grandchildren Hudson and Collins.

She is preceded in death by her father Richard.

Visitation will be Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with family present from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. at Polo Family Funeral Home, 110 E. Dixon St. Polo. Private family services will be held with burial at Fairmount Cemetery in Polo.

A record 52 antique farm tractors were featured Oct. 7 at the 30th annual Antique Tractor Classic and Gas Engine Exhibit at Oregon Park East as part of the 2023 Autumn on Parade activities.

“Many tractor exhibitors enjoyed participating in the annual tractor drive-thru in downtown Oregon. Each exhibitor was awarded a dash plaque with the AOP symbol,” show chairman Stan Eden said. “Nationally respected agricultural broadcaster Max Armstrong exhibited his 1953 Farmall Super M in the show and participated with his tractor in the Harvest Time Parade on Sunday.”

After his work with WGN radio, Armstrong served as communications director of Farm Progress Publications Co.

Show awards were given based on ballots cast by exhibitors.

OREGON – The Oregon Woman’s Club donated $500 and many nonperishable food items to the Lifeline Food Pantry, located in the Conover Square shopping center.

The national General Federation of Women’s Clubs designated Sept. 30 as a National Day of Service for its clubs in the U.S. This year’s theme was “Food Insecurity,” inspiring the local chapter to boost the Lifeline Food Pantry, which serves the Oregon community.

“Our mission as a club is to support nonprofits in the area performing important work over a broad spectrum of areas and the Lifeline pantry certainly meets that criterion,” said Jan Steward, OWC president. “They provide a necessary service to the people in the Oregon area undergoing economic hardship. The pantry depends on donations of food and other nonperishable items, the proceeds from a small resale shop and contributions from the community. The Oregon Woman’s Club is proud to be one of those supporters.”

Ridlbauer will bring seven birds of prey, including a hawk, owl and falcons and talk about their habits and rehabilitation. She will discuss what steps someone should take if they find a bird that has been injured.

ehinton@shawmedia.com Sunny skies and crisp temperatures greeted visitors to six Ogle County farms during the University of Illinois Extension Ogle County Farm Stroll on Oct. 15.

During the self-guided tour, visitors chose which farms they wanted to see and created their own routes using a map and brochure that was provided.

Visitors could pick up a “passport” on their first stop and then fill in the farms they visited.

Cora Dietrich and her dad, Dan, added a special treat to their farm – a maze of hay bales inside their barn at Dietrich Ranch on Leaf River Road north of Mt. Morris.

“My dad helped me with it,” said Cora, 11, who was more than willing to give visitors a guided tour. “I’ve been running through it all day.”

Dave Johnson of Rockford was one of the adults who braved the maze.

“It’s great,” he said, referring to the maze and the Farm Stroll. “Our goal is to meet local farmers and get good, clean food. Someday we’d like

to establish a cooperative.”

Next to the barn, Danielle Schaefer of Evanston watched three of Dietrich’s cattle as they ate grass.

“I saw this event was going on so I decided to drive out and see the farms,” she said.

The event was a success.

“It was a perfect day for a stroll around the countryside of Ogle County. Since COVID-19, this is the first time that the University of Illinois Extension serving Ogle County has hosted the event. There were over 130 people in attendance, learning all things from food to table. The farms had educational components, tours, demonstrations and samples,” Teresa Schwarz, an office support specialist with the Extension, said in an email.

Schwarz said the University of Illinois Extension in Ogle County thanks everyone who helped make this year’s Farm Stroll a success.

“From publicity to farmers, we could not have done it without you,” Schwarz said. “This event was enjoyable and we can’t wait to host it again next year. AN ORDINANCE ESTABLISHING AN UPDATED FEE SCHEDULE OF CHARGES FOR Section Nine: If any section, part or provision of this Ordinance shall be held invalid or NON-RESIDENT EMERGENCY RESPONSE SERVICES BY THE MOUNT MORRIS unenforceable for any reason, such invalidity or unenforceability shall not affect the remaining COMMUNITY FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT sections of the Ordinance.

WHEREAS, the Mount Morris Community Fire Protection District (the “District”), Ogle County, Illinois, is a fire protection district duly incorporated under the laws of the Sate of Section Ten: This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage, approval and publication. The Secretary is hereby directed to publish this Ordinance as Illinois [70 ILCS 705/1]; and required by law.

WHEREAS, the Illinois Fire Protection District Act (the “Act”) grants a board of trustees of a fire protection district the authority to “fix, charge, and collect fees not exceeding the Adopted by the Board of Trustees of the Mount Morris Fire Protection District, at a meeting reasonable cost of the service for all services rendered by the District against persons, held on the 16th day of October, 2023, on the following roll call vote: businesses and other entities who are not residents of the fire protection districts” [70 ILCS AYES: 5 705/11f(a)]; and NAYS: 0 WHEREAS, the District renders emergency services within the District to residents and ABSENT: 0 non-residents in the performance of its duties to the general public; and WHEREAS, the rendering of such emergency services within the District incurs costs to the District and its residents; and WHEREAS, the costs to the District of providing such services have steadily increased over the past several years; and Attest: WHEREAS, the Board finds that it is in the best interest of the District to charge for certain costs the District incurs in rendering such fire, rescue and emergency services to nonresidents.

Football playoff pairings were full of drama The IHSA football playoffs start Friday and Saturday and the anticipation leading up to the announcement of the pairings can be just as exciting. A few years ago, excessive hits on the IHSA website on the Saturday night of the pairings caused it to crash.

Unlike other IHSA sports with prearranged seedings, classification and postseason schedules, football does not reveal this information until the regular season is over. The buildup is felt all across the state.

To compound this, the smallest of matters can completely change outcomes. Just ask Forreston and Sterling Newman, whose fortunes were changed dramatically by a simple coin flip.

That is a good place to start in analyzing the brackets for local qualifiers.

Since both teams (7-2 records) were tied as a No. 7 seed in 1A when it came to playoff points based upon opponents’ wins (41) and defeated opponents’ wins (25), a coin flip was the only way to break the tie. The only time this can happen is if two teams are in the same classification and it is rare when it does.

Newman won the virtual toss and stayed at No. 7 and Forreston dropped to No. 8. That slotted the Comets away from the side of the bracket that powerhouse Lena-Winslow is in.

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert Should Forreston beat Ottawa Marquette, it will see Le-Win in the second round. Considering that Forreston was beaten by Le-Win 36-8 last week, losing that coin flip was a real downer.

The positive for Forreston is it’s 3-0 in the playoffs against Marquette and it was the last school to beat LenaWinslow (in 2021).

Newman, which has had plenty of success in 2A, has a much easier road.

To reach the third round, it needs only to get by teams from a relatively weak Lincoln Trail-Prairieland conference.

It does get tougher with suburban wild cards Aurora Christian and Chicago Hope as possible quarterfinal opponents. AC had been a 3A power under Don Beebe, but has regressed in the past decade. Hope, which has plenty of athleticism, has never been able to match up physically with northwest Illinois rural teams.

Thus, Newman’s path to the semifinals is much easier than Forreston’s.

No. 12-seed Oregon (5-4) is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2014

and got a favorable draw in 3A. It makes a short drive to No. 5 Pecatonica (7-2) in an intriguing matchup of the Big Northern versus Northwest Upstate Illini.

This game is considered a toss-up.

The last time Oregon played at Pecatonica was when both were in the Mid-Northern conference (1972-91), along with Mt. Morris, which is now part of the Oregon district.

Look for a large crowd at Pec, as Oregon has been hungry to get back in the playoffs. Back in the early 2000s when the Hawks were making playoff runs, their fans often would outnumber the home team’s fan base.

Stillman Valley (5-4), a team Oregon thumped in its best performance of the year, likely would be the Round 2 opponent and a home game for the Hawks should Oregon beat Du-Pec. SV is more playoff-tested than Oregon and should provide a stiffer challenge than it did in a 28-7 loss in Week 6.

The overwhelming favorite in 3A is Byron, though Lombard Montini could prove to be a worthy challenger in the semifinals.

For the first time since 2005, all six schools in Ogle County made the playoffs, with Rochelle getting a worse draw than Forreston. The 7-2 Hubs, who won their first conference title since 2004 by

beating highly regarded Rochmond-Burton, are bracketed in the 5A first round against Wheaton St. Francis.

Not only do they have to go on the road as a No. 9 seed, but Rochelle faces one of the top suburban private schools with an elite quarterback. The Hubs would have fared much better in 4A instead of being the second smallest school in 5A. Though 8-man football is not part of the IHSA playoffs, there is a similar formula to determine the final 16 qualifiers. Rather than break up the brackets into north and south like the IHSA does with 1A through 6A, 8-man goes statewide, which is a far more equitable approach.

Amboy (9-0), which took second in the state last year and returned almost its entire starting lineup, is the favorite to win it all, though the Clippers are the No. 2 seed behind Champaign St. Thomas More.

A potential second-round rematch with local interest is No. 3 Milledgeville (8-1) versus No. 6 Polo (7-2). In the regular season, the Missiles jumped on Polo early in a romp.

For Shaw Local News Network FORRESTON – In the premier rivalry in Class 1A football, Gage Dunker exploded for 198 yards in the second half to lead undefeated Lena-Winslow to a 36-8 win over Forreston on Oct. 20.

The two schools have combined for eight of the last nine state titles, but lately it’s been all Le-Win. “This wasn’t just another game,” Dunker said.

“This was Forreston versus Le-Win in Week 9. We’ll probably see them again anyway.”

Dunker, who finished with 1,050 more yards than anyone else in the conference, was held to 38 yards in the first half as the Panthers clung to an 8-0 lead after Forreston was stopped six inches short of the goal line with 12 seconds left on a disputed call.

Forreston fullback Owen Mulder, who is second in rushing yardage to Dunker (1,660 to 610), crossed the goal line with his helmet but not the football, according to the officials.

“I thought we were in,” Forreston coach Keynon Janicke said. “I can’t fault the officials, though. They called a great game.”

Cornerback Lucas Fye read the play and made a beeline for Mulder to prevent the score. It stymied a 13-play drive after the Cardinals stopped Le-Win at midfield on fourth down.

“That was a huge stick he made,” Le-Win coach Ric Arand said.

Unfortunately for the amped up home team, Dunker broke off a 62-yard touchdown four plays into the third quarter for a 16-0 lead.

Dunker was stopped at the line of scrimmage, but broke free and outraced the Cardinals secondary to the end zone. After a failed fourth-down attempt on the next possession by Forreston, Dunker made it 22-0 with his second touchdown on the half.

“Forreston played extremely well in the first half,” Arand said. “In the second half, we made adjustments and executed to perfection.”

Micah Nelson got loose for a 45-yard gain to set up Forreston’s lone score. Mulder crashed over from one yard out and Nelson added the PAT run to cut

the deficit to 22-8.

With Kaleb Sanders getting outside on the jet sweep, Mulder running up the middle and Nelson doing his part, the trio had 69, 68 and 67 yards. Ball carrying by committee, Forreston has yet to have a single 100-yard rusher in any game this year.

“We played fast and physical and we’re absolutely ready for the playoffs,” Janicke said. “What hurt us tonight was giving up the big plays.”

Quinn Rodenbaugh caught a 32-yard pass from Jake Schumacher to keep alive a 14-play, 82-yard scoring drive to make it 28-8 on a Cobryn Lynch touchdown. It was only the second pass thrown all year by the Panthers.

Schumacher was quietly efficient in leading Le-Win to its 28th straight win. Its last loss was in 2021 to who else – Forreston.

It wasn’t just the Gage Dunker show. Lynch had more than 100 yards rushing and scored the first touchdown of the game on a 34-yard run after breaking a tackle at the line of scrimmage.

“I can live with a missed tackle once in awhile but can’t have too many of those with someone as good as Le-Win,” Janicke said. “Overall, this was a good, clean game, small town high school football at its finest. In the first half, we showed we can compete with them.”

It was the sixth NUIC title in the past nine years for the defending state champ Panthers.

“Winning the conference still means a lot to us,” said Arand, who has coached six state champions.

Logan Weems rushed 18 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns, bringing his season totals to 1,006 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns.

Jack Washburn finished 6-for-10 passing for 78 yards with two touchdown passes: a 12-yarder to Josh Crandall and a 20-yarder to Griffin Marlatt.

Washburn finished the regular season with 1,048 passing yards.

Austin Egyed caught two passes for 42 yards as the leading receiver.

Lucas Cole returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown and rushed for 43 yards on seven carries. Cooper Johnson added 92 rushing yards and a touchdown on eight carries.

Running in the girls race will be Oregon, which qualified by finishing in seventh place with 187 points at the Winnebago Regional on Oct. 21.

Ella Dannhorn led the Hawks with a seventh-place finish at the Winnebago Regional on Oct. 21 posting a 19:23.03 time.

Lorelai Dannhorn placed 12th in 19:45.93, followed by Abbie Ludwig, (54th, 22:30), Val Davis (65th) and Arianna Chapa (72nd).

Winnebago took first, followed by Richmond Burton, Byron, Rockford Christian, Eastland and Genoa Kingston. Forreston finished 11th and did not advance any runners to the sectional. Forreston/Polo’s Courtney Grobe finished 42nd, followed by Autumn Pritchard (60th), Nevaeh Scheffner (64th), Karlea Frey (66th), Courtney Davis (74th), Ramsie Grenoble (79th) and Olivia Loppnow (84th).

In the boys race, Forreston/Polo qualified for the sectional by finishing seventh. The team was led by Kameron Grobe, who finished 33rd in 17:17, followed by Noah Genant (36th), Kale Grobe (37th), Taryn Heather (46th), Joey Rowland (63rd) and Jared Merkel (72nd).
