“Wehadquiteafewbiddersinterested intheproject,”CountyEngineerJeremy Ciesielsaid.“Wehadeightbiddersthat actually submittedinformationonthe project.Itblewmeaway.Iwasvery pleasedwiththeturnout.”

ThelowbidcamefromMartin&Co.,of Oregon,andwasapprovedduringtheOgle CountyBoard’sOct. 18meeting. Ciesiel saidhereviewedthesubmissionand

everythingwasinorder.

Thecostofdemolitionwill be paidfor usingAmericanRescue PlanActmonies; thatexpenditurealso wasapprovedby boardmembersonOct.18.

Thesevenotherbidsrangedfrom $121,200,madebyRezzarDemolitionLLC, ofCrystalLake,toahighof$432,500,made byDore &AssociatesInc.,ofBayCity, Michigan.Onlythehighbidwasfroman out-of-statebidder.

Theoldjailislocatedat107S.FifthSt., inOregon.Itisattached tothesouthside oftheOldOgleCountyCourthouse, a buildinginwhichmanycountyofficials haveoffices.Thenew jail,locatedwestof theOgleCountyJudicialCenter, opened November2020.

PriortoMartin&Co.startingtheproject,contractsneedtobeputinplaceand everythingorganized,Ciesielsaid.Additionally,theystillareworkingtodisconnectsomeoftheutilities,hesaid.

“Ourhopeisthatwecanstartondemo litionsometimeinNovemberandgetit completedbeforetheendoftheyear,” Ciesielsaid.“Butfirstthingsfirst,and that’sgettingallthepaperworkandutilitiesdisconnected.”

TherivalrybetweentheMilledgevilleMissilesandthePoloMarcos tooka backseatOct.13whenthe schools’twovolleyballteamssquared offfortheirNUICcontestintheMarcosgym.

TheMarcoscommunityturnedthe evening into an$11,000fundraising effortfortwoMilledgevilleteenswho wereinjuredinanautomobilecrash Sunday,Oct.9,onRoute40atGenesee Road.

Inthemostrecentreport,theteens bothwereincriticalcondition.

Theeveningeventsincludedabake sale,silentauctionand50/50 raffle. Proceedsfromthegateadmissionalso weredonatedtothe teensandtheir families.

TreySelman,a2021graduateof MilledgevilleHighSchool,wonthe 50/50pot,at$610,whichhedonated backtothefamilies.

“Theyneeditmore thanIdo,”Selmansaid.“It’sheartbreaking.”

SelmansaidThursday’sevent showshowsmalltownssuchasPolo andMilledgevillehelpeachotherout duringtragediessuchasthisone.

“Thesesmalltownscometogether likenothingelse,”Selmansaid.“It’s reallygreattosee.”

Theeventraised$11,089forthe Milledgevillefamilies.

TheSUVhitthecaronthepassengerside.Twopassengersinthecar, boysages15and16,suffered“severe injuries”andwereflowntoaregional hospital.BotharemembersoftheMissiles’eight-manfootballteam.

Theothers,thetwodriversandthe passengerintheSUV–an18-year-old manfromChadwickwhoisa2021 graduateof MilledgevilleHighSchool –weretakentoalocalhospital.The car’sdriverwascitedforfailureto yieldandforagraduateddriver’s licenseviolation.

Theyneededmentobeinchargeof thosetroopsandR.D.Woolsey ofthe 15thtookoneofthosepositions.The 15thlookedfavorableuponthatdecision.

BruceandIthentookpartinthe drivingtourandendedupatthe IllinoisMemorialuponthe hill.Itwas beautifulandBruceclimbedupallthe stairstoseeallthenamesofthemen fromIllinois.Therewasthe15thwho hadbeeninvolved,allnamed.Ididnot attempttoclimballthesteps.

Justrecently,sonSteveandhis wifeCheri,alsovisitedtheVicksburg Park.Theyfacetimedwithmeathome fromtheIllinoisMemorialsoIcould seetheinsideofthisbeautifulspot.

Thenameswereallthereofthemen from Illinoiswhofoughtsohardin thisarea.Iamamazedattechnology sinceIcouldseeallthenamesofthe 15thfromnorthernIllinois.Steveand CheriwereontheirwaytoTexas.

BruceandIonourvisitdidnot havetimethatdaytoseeallofthepark soweheadedtoourhoteltocheckin. Thenwedrovearoundthisbeautiful southerncommunity.Ipickedthe WalnutHillsforourdinnerthateve ning.Whenwewalkedbythedessert displaycaseandIsawallthepossibili ties, Iknewimmediatelywewereina highclassspot.

Isawtiramisuandcreambrulee amongmanyotherdeliciouslooking desserts.Ithoughttomyself,thisis goingtobeagreatevening.

andfromtheDixonDepots.Amos SheffieldcametoGrandDetourin1861 andopenedahotelin1865.

Amoswasbornin1828anddiedin 1893.ThishotelwaslocatedonthecornerofRockandRiverStreets(nowIllinois2).Along withthephotoofthe SheffieldHotelarephotosofthehotel outhouses labeledhisandhersouthousesandhistombstone.

ThishotelburnedMay14,1928. A photoshowingthefireshowsasign locatednearthestreetreading“Food FamousForFiftyYears.”

It’samazingthatoneoftheseouthousesstillstandsandtheotherone wasdisassembledsoitcouldbe restored.

Theinternetstoryconcerningouthousesisentitledtoilettypescovered byshelters.“Anouthouseoftenprovidesashelterfor a pitlatrine,which collectshumanfecesinaholeinthe ground.Whenthepitfillstothetop,it should byeither emptiedoranewpit constructedandthesheltermoved or rebuiltatthenewlocation.”

About 60peoplebravedachillin Sunday’sairtomaketheirwaytothe Mt.Morriscampussquareforthe inauguralFamilyFallFestival.

“Ithinkitwasagreatturnoutfor ourfirstyear,”said TiffanyWest,Let FreedomRingCommitteechairperson.“Wehadagreatturnoutfor vendors.Thekidsincostumesenjoyedit. That’sthebest.”

Theeventwasafundraiserforthe LFRFourthofJulyfireworkshow. Fireworkscostatleast$20,000,and thatprice –whichLFRstrugglesto raise–isexpectedtoincreasenext year,Westsaidinapreviousinterview.

FamilyFallFestival attendeeshid theirhandsinjacketpocketsandkept theirhoodsuporhatsonaswinds between15and20mphcombinedwith theroughly50-degreeweathertocreateacrispautumnday.

Still,theweatherisoneofthethings thatwentrightforthisevent,said West,whoalreadyislookingtoward nextyear.

“Hopefully[we’ll]doitnextyear,” shesaid.“I’ddefinitelylovetosee morepumpkinsandmorevendors. Fillthiscampusup.It’dbeawesome.”
