President Ronald Reagan, portrayed by Mark Tremble of the Performing Arts Guild, will “return” to Mt. Morris to reminisce about his 1963 visit to the village to dedicate its first Freedom Bell at the Veterans Memorial Fountain.

His speech was delivered before he became governor of California in 1967 and the 40th president of the United States in 1981. Come enjoy Let Freedom Ring’s July Fourth Patriotic program at noon on the campus. Bring a sun hat, sunscreen, water and a lawn chair.

Reagan’s motorcade will arrive at the campus shortly after the program begins. Reagan will be joined on stage by choir and band members from the junior and senior high schools of the Oregon Community Unit School District. The students are from both Mt. Morris and Oregon. The former president will deliver his 1963 Mt. Morris speech which is reminiscent of the ’60s, but reverberates throughout the years. The program finale will be performed by a barbershop quartet singing “The

Star-Spangled Banner.”

The official state of Illinois Freedom Bell adjacent to the bandshell will be rung immediately following the Patriotic program. All are invited to participate in ringing the giant bell. The Let Freedom Ring grand parade begins at 2 p.m.

Reagan’s bell dedication transitioned the theme of the Mt. Morris Fourth of July Festival in the late 1950s from “An Old Fashioned Fourth” to today’s “Let Freedom Ring.”

Our 2022 campus celebration will combine past and present traditions including an invocation, the pledge of allegiance, speeches, a choir, band, barbershop quartet, bell ringing and “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The Oregon School District is offering the public a chance to pick up old trophies currently on display at the former David L. Rahn Junior High in

Mt. Morris.

“Numerous old Oregon/Mt. Morris junior high trophies will be on display and available for any interested community members to pick up and keep on Friday morning, July 1 from 9 a.m. to noon outside the main doors of the former Mt. Morris Jr. High gym lobby area,” said Mike Lawton, activities director in an email on Tuesday. “Many of these were from seventh and eighth grade athletics events from 1995-2018. If you or a family member participated on any of these teams and would like to permanently keep a trophy, they will be available free of charge for community pickup. Items will be available on a first come, first serve basis.”

The Oregon School Board decided earlier this year to close the David L. Rahn Junior High School, located in Mt. Morris, and move seventh and eighth grade student to the Oregon High School in Oregon, located 5 mies to the east.

The building, which was the Mt. Morris High School before the two districts joined, will be either sold or demolished.

Polo Town & Country Days crowned the 2022 Little Miss and Mister on June 16.

A’Myia Miller was selected as Little Miss, and Carter Miller was named Little Mister. The two 4-year-olds are unrelated.

As part of the interview process, Carter was asked what is the funniest thing that ever has happened to him.

“I don’t know,” Carter said. “I don’t even know anything.”

When asked if he had a special talent, Carter said he wanted to sing.

“One, two, three, four, five, once I caught a fish alive. Six, seven, eight, nine, 10, then I let it go again,” Carter sang.

“Why did you let it go? Because it bit my finger, so. Which finger did it bite? This little finger on my right.”

A’Myia was asked what toy she would want if she could have any toy. She said she’d want a pink car so she could take someone for a ride.

“I would go to Casey’s,” A’Myia said to much laughter.

When asked what she would get at Casey’s, she said, “I would get snacks for [my little brother] Anderson.”

On June 19, Carter and A’Myia rode on one of the floats in the Polo Town & Country Days Fathers’ Day Parade.

Board to start bid process to sell junior high school

ehinton@shawmedia.com School officials have started the process to seek bids to sell the David L. Rahn Junior High.

The Oregon School Board voted 6-0 to pass a resolution to authorize Superintendent Tom Mahoney to begin the 60-day effort.

“This resolution allows us to put the property up for sale by sealed bid,” Mahoney said prior to the vote.

Mahoney said a notice of sale has to be published for three weeks before the bid opening.

“If no bids are received then we can hire a real estate broker or demolish it,” Mahoney said.

Monday’s vote followed a June 14 decision by the Mt. Morris Village Board to reject ownership of the 1952 school building which was the Mt. Morris High School until the two districts joined in the early 1990s.

In that decision, Mt. Morris Village trustees recommended “the Oregon School Board reconsider pursuing any disposition of the DLR building for a period of 2-3 years” after unanimously voting to decline the offer of ownership following a closed session. The closed session lasted less than 10 minutes.

On Feb. 22, school board members voted 4-2 to close DLR at the end of the 2021-22 school year, despite pleas from Mt. Morris officials and residents to keep the school open. Seventh grade and eighth grade students will attend Oregon High School, which is located 5 miles to the east in Oregon, beginning this fall.

The David L. Rahn Junior High, formerly Mt. Morris High School, is located at 105 W. Brayton Road in Mt. Morris. The Oregon School Board voted earlier this year to close the school and move seventh and eighth grade students to Oregon High School.

District merged with the Oregon School District in 1994 because of financial reasons.

Mahoney first proposed closing DLR in May 2021, citing decreasing enrollment throughout the district and increasing maintenance costs at DLR as reasons to do so.

“We continue to believe this decision is wrong, shortsighted and not in the best interest of students, staff and district families,” Labash said in a written statement last week. “Immediate disposition of the building through sale, transfer or demolition will eliminate a critical safety net should serious issues arise as a result of this decision.”

An advisory committee, formed before the school board’s final vote,

argued that information they had disputed Mahoney’s assessment of the building’s physical condition and also argued that the school district did not need to close the school because of financial reasons.

On Monday, Mahoney said after the meeting that he understood the village’s decision. “I think Mt. Morris needs to do what’s best for themselves.

I was just surprised there wasn’t more questions,” he said.

School Board President Bryan Wills agreed.

“I thought there’d be a little more discussion on it,” Wills said. “It would have been nice for them to keep it.”

A walk-through of the building is being offered to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 3.

Here is a portion of the bid notice approved by the board: “Bids must be submitted in a sealed envelope titled ‘Bid for School District Real Estate.’ The name, address and telephone number of the bidder must be displayed on the outside of the bid.

Bids shall be due on Aug. 9 at 3 p.m. at the District Administrative Office, 206 S. 10th Street, Oregon, IL 61061.

“Bids will be opened and read aloud on Aug. 9 at 3 p.m. at the District Administrative Office. The award of the bid, if at all, shall be by the Board of Education on Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. or such later date as the board may determine.

“Beginning on June 28 at 9 a.m. a bidder’s information packet will be available at the District Administrative Office and on the district’s website, www.ocusd.net, which shall contain the terms and conditions of the sale, a bid form, a specimen lease agreement, a specimen real estate purchase agreement, an ALTA survey, a commitment for title insurance for the real estate and such other documents as made available by the board in the bid packet.

“Any questions relating to the sale of the real estate should be sent via email to the attention of Dr. Thomas Mahoney, superintendent, at tmahoney@ocusd.net. A written response to all inquiries shall be given by Dr. Mahoney to all bidders that have provided him with contact information.

No oral representations will be binding upon the board. Additionally, no inquiries may be submitted after Aug. 5 at 3 p.m.”

Cellphone policy changing for Oregon High School students

ehinton@shawmedia.com Oregon High School students will have to turn over their cellphones at the start of each class period under a revised cellphone policy introduced Monday to school board members.

OHS Principal Heidi Deininger said the school was adopting an “out of sight” policy for cellphones.

“We want to eliminate cellphones as a distraction,” Deininger said.

“The policy is going to be that all cellphones are out of sight and will be put in a cellphone locker at the start of the class.”

She said cellphones are a “huge distractor” for students in grades 9-12.

“You are not learning if you are thinking about what’s on your cellphone,” she said noting that the new policy could be a “culture shock” for some students.

“I think ‘withdrawal’ is what you’ll be seeing,” superintendent Tom Mahoney said.

School board member Molly Baker agreed with the new policy.

“Kids can’t multi-task as well as they like to think they can. All kinds of studies have shown that it is a distraction,” she said.

Deininger said the school district purchased cellphone safes for each of the school’s 50 classrooms. She said the safes cost around $140 each.

“Teachers are on board with it, so we want the kids to be on board, too,”

she said, hoping the policy will allow for an increase in “human interaction” during the 45-minute class periods.

“I really think it [cellphone distractions] are having an adverse effect on learning,” she said.

After the meeting, Deininger said some teachers ask students not to use phones during class periods, but the use of the cellphone safes will standardize the school’s approach for each classroom.

She said in the event of an incident, the phones could be taken out of the safe. “God forbid if something did happen they could go to the locker and get it out,” she said.

Deininger said parents would be notified of the new policy this week.

Oregon High School has purchased cellphone safes for each classroom for the school year.

Ogle County Board members appointed a county treasurer/collector to fill out the remainder of Linda Beck’s term.

Beck is retiring June 30 after 16 years with the county.

Tiffany O’Brien was appointed Ogle County treasurer/collector, effective July 1. The appointed term ends Nov. 30, which concludes the county’s fiscal year.

“Tiffany is also running for the post in the next election,” County Board Chairperson John Finfrock said. “So it will be seamless at that point, I guess.”

O’Brien, a Republican, is unopposed on the ballot.

Beck began working for Ogle County as chief deputy treasurer in 2006 and became treasurer in 2018.

She was honored at Tiffany O’Brien the June 21 county board meeting for her services.

Former Solid Waste Director Steve Rypkema also was honored for his services at the meeting. He was hired in 1990 and served as solid waste director from 1998 to 2022.

Museum was very busy during Town & Country Days

aturday was open house at Aplington House and the Polo History Museum. The occasion was Polo Town and Country Days.

Usually we have a few people drifting in and out and we end up visiting with one another. That was not the case this time.

As I pulled in, Tom Nelson was waiting across the street and we went in together. Remember Tom from the Peek Home and our last meeting?

He came back with booklets made on the Peek Home for anyone who wants one. We opened the museum and started to get things set up.

We had six of us at the Polo History Museum and Susan and Tim covered the Aplington House. The museum had no more than opened when people came from Lanark with unusual milk bottles from a Polo Creamery.

I knew them since the gal and I had traveled to Northern years ago to get our education. So we visited big time.

Now here we are retired from teaching.

Then someone came in and wondered where Burman’s Hatchery had been. I hastened as fast as my walker would go to get the file on the hatchery. I said to Ted to get the big book that Ed Olsen had put together on the businesses and with all that information we managed to figure out where the hatchery had been.

Part of it on one side of the street and another part of it on the other side of the street.

Soon after that someone else came in with a match holder from Burman’s Hatchery. Now how often does that happen? At that point I started to write things down because I have now reached 90 and at some point my mind could start going. I might not remember who brought that part of our history as a donation.

Cathy Hendry came in and soon noticed that we did not have an important part of Central Stamping history. It was an ad made by Central when Cathy

They got to push a bowl of cereal on the floor so the high powered vac could clean the mess up. Cathy went home and came back with the ad for us. We visited for quite a while.

People were coming and going with all kinds of questions. Someone who had purchased a house wanted some history and I handed them the book on houses and a couple of files that tell when homes and businesses were built. They settled down at a table to search and found something we copied off.

Someone on a motorcycle was traveling by and we had a nice visit. He had originally been from Polo.

I found out the math teacher from the high school is my new neighbor and has moved in across the street recently. I did not even realize the old neighbors had left.

Soon several from the Terry family came in and it was nice showing them what has been done. I had Ethan Terry in first grade. Where have the years gone?

We were busy and it was nice to see all the young folks interested in what we have put together. It is fun showing off Polo’s history.

We now have milk bottles, a Burman’s Hatchery match holder and an ad for Central Stamping to put in place.

First a little card needs to be made about each one. That I will do when all is quiet.

It was a great day at the museum.

It was dusty, hot and very sunny – the perfect recipe for the Rock River Riders Motorcycle Club’s Father’s Day hillclimb on Sunday.

Riders from across the region took their best shots at climbing “the hill” on their motorcycles in a variety of class divisions. Footage and the time spent to make it all the way to the top determined the winners of each division.

During intermission, spectators got a chance to climb the hill on their own two legs.

The club was founded in 1935 and is located across from the main entrance to White Pines State Park along Pines Road between Oregon and Polo.

The club was known for its hill climb event, held just to the west of what once was the Pines Drive-In Theater. When the theater closed, the club purchased the land it was on.

The club’s next hill climb will be the “State Championship Hill Climb” on Sunday, Aug. 21. The event starts at 11 a.m. and runs to 8 p.m.

Mother Nature smiles big time on second Jamboree

ehinton@oglecountynews.com All it took was mild temperatures, a nice breeze and classic tunes to bring a large crowd out to the second installment of Mt. Morris’ Jamboree concert series Friday.

Generation played classic rock tunes from the Warren Reckmeyer Bandshell, located on the downtown campus.

“The weather is absolutely perfect,” said Larry Ubben, organizer. “What a great night.”

The free concert series continues each Friday night through the summer.

Next up is Grass Attack on June 24 at 7 p.m.

“Grass Attack plays a range of styles from folk and country to newgrass and bluegrass, regularly performing at a variety of festivals, county fairs, park concerts and wineries in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin,” Ubben said. “Randy Tacket plays lead guitar and banjo.

Jeff and Liz Wagner play banjo and guitar and mandolin and guitar,

respectively. All sing lead and harmony vocals. Bruce Rittschof plays bass and rhythm guitar.”

Concessions for the evening will be provided by Hector’s Cocina, serving Mexican food and drinks starting at 6 p.m.

“Please bring a chair or blanket or enjoy our benches and plan to join us on our beautiful and historic campus in the center of town for what promises to be a fantastic family friendly concert,” Ubben said.

In the case of rain, the event moves to Pinecrest Grove Community Center at 500 Evergreen Lane at the same times.

StingRays on July 1 Chicago’s oldies rock and roll band, The StingRays, will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. July 1.

“Everyone fortunate enough to see previous shows by this exciting and engaging act will fondly remember the dynamic stage presence of this wonderful band and will attest to the do not miss grade level of their show,” Ubben said. “The StingRays play the greatest music ever written and play it with the energy, passion and authenticity of the

artists whose music they love.”

Ubben said the StingRays love interacting with audiences through trivia, dance contests and even joining people in the audience.

“The StingRays always get the crowd dancing and singing to songs from Rockabilly – tons of ’60s to the 70s,” he said.

Concessions for the evening will be provided by the Ogle County Beef Producers and Hector’s Corn Roaster.

The Let Freedom Ring Committee will be serving root beer floats from 6 to 8 p.m.

It’s also opening night of the fourday Let Freedom Ring Festival.

The Jonas Fultz Memorial Car Show will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on the north end of the campus.

Sign-up is at 4 p.m.

There will be a ’50s and ’60s costume contest with winners announced at 8 p.m.

The craft fair will be at the north end of the campus from 5 to 9 p.m.

“Please bring a blanket or chair or enjoy the new benches and join the fun on our beautiful historic campus in the center of Mt. Morris, two blocks south of Route 64 on Wesley Avenue and enjoy the free rock ’n’ roll concert,” Ubben said.

“In the event of rain, the whole show moves to the Pinecrest Grove Community Center, located at 500 Evergreen Lane., seven blocks south of Route 64 on McKendrie Street at the same times.”

Attention gardeners! Garden club’s flower show is back

Polo Woman’s Garden Club Hey, gardeners, it’s finally happening again and you won’t want to miss it. All you need is your green thumb, maybe a trowel or a little pruning shear and time in the sunshine to actively participate in an upcoming flower show sponsored by the Polo Woman’s Garden Club.

This year’s theme is “BEE-UTIFUL BLOOMS.” The show will be on Saturday, Aug. 6, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Polo Area Senior Center, 101 E. Mason Street, in Polo.

If you attended the flower shows the club organized in past years, you should remember what successful and fun events they were. More than 80 entries were submitted in different classes of flowers and/or vegetables at the first show.

Gardeners exhibited a variety of their favorite home-grown plants, earning recognition and ribbons awarded by area judges. In addition, more than 200 spectators attended to view the “fruits,” actually flowers or veggies, of someone else’s labor.

Now, once again, happy gardeners are invited to “sign up” to display their

plantings for their own enjoyment and for any onlookers out for a pleasant afternoon.

Categories that people may enter include “cut flowers,” “wildflower arrangements,” “outdoor container plantings,” “not house plants,” “floral bouquets,” “single specimen of flower” and a “horticulture category for vegetables.”

There is a special class for children under 12 to enter that includes some of the adult categories plus one called “ditch display,” which means “any plant growing in a ditch” so probably NOT grown by choice.

All children entering will receive a participation ribbon and other recognition.

There is no entry fee for either adults or children exhibiting items and all may enter as many categories as they would like.

First-, second- and third-place ribbons will be awarded in each adult class plus a “People’s Choice” award will be given. Judging will be done between 10 a.m. and noon by three area judges experienced in gardening and/or working as professionals in the field.

Exhibitors need to set up between

8 and 10 a.m. the morning of the show.

Entries must remain on display until the end of the show at 4 p.m. that day.

No exhibitors will be allowed in the building during the judging.

In addition to the main exhibits, there will be other demonstrations and presentations going on during the afternoon.

Master Gardener Leah Patapack from Oregon will be giving a talk called “Buzz on Pollinators” with handouts on the importance of pollinators and how to attract them.

Gardener Pat Kuhn from Polo will be showing the “Many things you can do with dried and preserved flowers.”

Bri Kuhn, also from Polo, will demonstrate and explain about creating “Fresh Floral Designs.”

There will be drawings for door prizes, donated through the generosity of businesses within the city of Polo and surrounding towns. Those contributing to the flower show from Polo are Country Floral, Fresh Foods Grocery Store, Polo Pharmacy and Knie’s Appliance Store.

Door prizes from Dixon are being donated from Flowers Etc. and Britni Dvorak, owner of the Hallmark Store.

Door prizes from Oregon will be donated by Merlin’s Greenhouse and Floral and also from A.M. Floral Co. flower shop in downtown Oregon.

There will be a drawing to win a Garden Club gift basket or a special “Bear, Bee and Butterfly” gift basket (very cute) for children under 12 who participate or attend the flower show with an adult.

To exhibit the day of the flower show, official entry forms must be obtained and returned by mail or in person by July 15 to the contact person listed on the form.

Forms are available in Polo at Knie’s Appliance, Country Floral, Polo City Ha ll, Polo Pha rmac y, Polo Library, Polo Senior Center or from Polo Woman’s Garden Club members.

“The hometown that gave Ronald Reagan nearly 80 percent of its vote in November is being asked to give 100 percent of its well wishes for a speedy recovery Wednesday.

“Dixonites were asked to assemble at the Lee County Courthouse for a group photo on the north side of Memorial Arch. Participants in the group photo held large placards spelling out “Get Well Dutch.” Those with white cowboy hats, which were a Dixon trademark, were encouraged to wear them. The Dixon High School Marching Dukes Band assembled under the Arch to lead in singing “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.”

Ronald Reagan visited Dixon in 1941, 1950, 1964, 1980 and 2000. He was inaugurated Jan. 20, 1981, and Jan. 21, 1985. The attempted assassination by John Warnock Hinckley Jr. occurred

Ronald Reagan was the 40th president of the United States of America.

In 1981, the Dixon High School Band, cheerleaders and pompoms marched in his first inaugural parade in Washington, D.C. In 1985 at his second inauguration, I was asked to help chaperone the pompoms and cheerleaders. They were scheduled to march in the parade with the Tampico Band. Tampico was the birthplace of Reagan. The parade was canceled by a blizzard and the ceremony was held in the Capitol Hockey Rink.

She was born April 6, 1924 in Carroll County, IL, the daughter of Merle and Edith (DeWall) Diehl.

Bernita married Dale O. Runte December 29, 1943 in Shannon, IL; he passed away February 22, 2013. Bernita worked alongside her husband on the family farm. She was a member of Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church.

She enjoyed traveling, gardening, and baking.

She loved attending her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting events, continuing to attend well into her 90’s. Brian S. Black, 45, of Oregon, was arrested at 8:45 a.m. for driving while license

suspended. Black was transported to the Ogle County jail. This violation occurred in the 100 block of W. Washington Street.

June 18 Edward J. Hall, 40, of Oregon, was arrested at 12:09 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Hall was also issued citations for speeding, 53 mph in a 40 mph zone, and improper lane usage. He was transported to the Ogle County jail. These violations occurred in the 100 block of E. Washington Street.

The Oregon Lions Club’s annual Father’s Day Car Show drew 155 vehicles on Sunday, marking a record in recent years.

“It’s a record for us,” said Ron Armeson, who organized this year’s show with Doug Aken. “We had some cars here today that I had never seen before.”

With temperatures in the 80s and sunny skies with zero threat of rain, Mother Nature provided the perfect “car showing weather.”

“We want this weather every year,” said Aken, smiling.

Oliver Sosa, 3, of Oregon, walked by Tony Loding’s “Wild Thing” a supercharged 1967 Chevy Camaro pro street entry.

Sosa was dwarfed by the Camaro’s 496 Big Block GMC engine as he walked by it with his mom and dad, but he was more concerned about the car’s purple paint job and white wispy streaks that he decided were ghosts.

“It’s got monster eyes,” Sosa said.

“It’s too scary to go in there.”

Next to Wild Thing was a 1971 Chevy pickup truck with matching Shasta camping trailer owned by Pat Brown and Dan Rusk of Pecatonica.

“I bought the truck last September to match the camperm which I found in Florida,” Brown said. “I had to redo the whole camper inside and it took me the whole summer. I waited to paint it until I found the right truck so I could match the paint.”

Down the row, Alan Wagner’s diminutive 1959 Berkley Roadster was nestled in between two muscle cars.

“It’s 10-foot long, 4-foot wide and only weighs 740 pounds,” said Wagner, who has owned the car for 22 years.

Herb Olujic of Mt. Morris was busy cleaning the windshield of his 1962 Impala SS. “It’s pretty much original except for one paint job,” he said. “I’ve owned it 10 years. I bought it at the Hampshire car show. It originally came from Texas and I am its third owner.”

Ron Kunstman, 73, of Lindenwood brought his 1954 Chevy Bel Air to the show.

He has owned the car for 15 years and one of his first cars was a 1955 Chevy.

“It was a lot like this one,” he said.

“Now at my age, anyone with gray hair is OK, too,” he said chuckling.

The Lions Club served a pancake breakfast in the morning and then dished out pork chops and bratwurst in the afternoon.

16 OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity: June 13 At approximately 5:50 p.m., deputies and the Lynn-Scott-Rock Fire Protection District responded to the 18000 block of Illinois Route 64 for a single-vehicle rollover with injuries. An investigation showed a Ford F-150 driven by Joshua Beach, of Machesney Park, left the roadway, struck a guardrail and rolled once. Beach was evaluated and transported to an area hospital for possible serious injuries. Beach was cited for improper traffic lane usage, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Nickole Butler, 38, of Forreston, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop in the 600 block of South 1st Avenue in Forreston at approximately 7:31 p.m. Butler also was cited for improper lane usage, expired registration and illegal transportation of alcohol. Butler was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

June 14 Stephen Babus, 57, of Monroe Center, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and domestic battery after deputies responded to 17000 Illinois Route

72 at 6:38 p.m. for a domestic battery. Babus was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

June 15 Justin N. Balaban, 29, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs, driving while license suspended, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper traffic lane usage and failure to reduce speed after deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash in the 13000 block of Illinois Route 64 at approximately 5:30 a.m. Balaban was transported by Oregon EMS to KSB Hospital.

Balaban was released on an I-Bond at the hospital and given a future court date.

June 16 Walter E. Ruiz-Martinez, 28, of Carol Stream, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 88 mile marker 76 at 8:07 p.m. Ruiz-Martinez was released on scene and given a future court date.

Shameika Olmos, 40, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 19000 block of Illinois Route 38 at 8:43 p.m. for an equipment violation. Olmos also was cited for no front license plate. Olmos was released on a signature I-Bond and given a return court date.

June 17 Brandon Butler, 44, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while under the influence, aggravated driving while under the influence and aggravated driving while license revoked after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 101 at 1:20 a.m.

Butler also was cited for no insurance, expired registration, no registration light and unlawful transportation of alcohol. Butler was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Jhonatan Cristancho, 32, of Woodridge, was arrested for driving while license suspended after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 39 near Illinois Route 64.

Cristancho was released on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

Colton Frevert, 24, of Baraboo, Wisconsin, was arrested for driving while license suspended after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 39 near Illinois Route 64.

June 19 At approximately 3:48 p.m., deputies responded to the intersection of East Illinois Route 64 and Mulford Rd in reference to a pickup truck versus motorcycle accident.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a pickup truck being driven by Amy Anthenat, 46 of Creston, was northbound on Mulford Road at which time it failed to yield to an eastbound motorcycle being driven by Richard Andrews, 60 of Addison.

The motorcycle collided with the driver side of the pickup truck. Andrews was transported to Rochelle Community Hospital

by Rochelle EMS, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Anthenat was uninjured in the accident.

Deputies were assisted by the Illinois State Police and Rochelle Fire/EMS. This incident remains under investigation.

dwussow@shawmedia.com Before the start of every season, Forreston softball coach Kim Snider asks her players to write down their team goals and individual goals for the year.

Usually, the answers to these prompts vary somewhat, but this year the team goal was unanimous – and didn’t require a written reminder.

“This group came to me and said, ‘We don’t need to write down what we want to do as a team this year. We want to go to state,’” Snider said. “I think they were already determined at the beginning of the year to make it down to state this year, and I think they believed in that goal every step of the way.”

The Cardinals’ high aspirations and hard work paid off as they went 23-5 through the postseason, reached the state tournament for the first time in program history and placed third at state in the Class 1A field with a 4-2

win over Newark at Louisville Slugger Sports Complex in Peoria.

Forreston also had two eight-game winning streaks this season, and won four of its final five games in the final at-bat during the run to state.

For leading the Cardinals to an unprecedented season, Snider is Sauk Valley Media’s 2022 Softball Coach of the Year.

Looking at the historic Forreston softball season from a macro perspective, resilience was a recurring theme.

Its last four wins on the way to state were achieved in come-from-behind fashion, with the last three being won on a walk-off hit.

In the sectional semifinal, the Cardinals prevailed 2-1 over Pearl City on a Rylee Broshous 12th-inning home run. In the sectional title game against Dakota, Breanna Kloster blasted a bases-loaded double in the bottom of seventh to win 8-7. In the supersectional tilt versus Biggsville West Central, Forreston erased a 4-0 deficit, then won 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh on

an Ella Ingram home run.

That unshakable resolve is what made this year’s team so special, Snider said.

“Their resilience. Each time we had a comeback win, it was a different kid that came through when we needed them,” she said. “I think what it really came down to is they all wanted to do whatever they could for each other and to bring home the victory. And I think that’s what made this group so special.

“My entire team this year is an extraordinary group of kids who truly believed in one another.”

Crosby to be featured musician at June 29 Kable Concert Band

The Kable Concert band will be performing its third concert of its 126th season, on Wednesday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Warren Reckmeyer Bandshell in downtown Mt. Morris.

“The band, directed by Andy Eckardt, performs a variety of music from crowd-pleasing marches, show tunes, classical, etc. Something for everyone,” band member Sylvia Saunders said. “The special performance on June 29 will be the band’s own Ben Crosby, an oboist.”

Crosby, an Oregon resident, has played with the Kable Band for five years, and also has played for the Illinois Valley Symphony for 10 years.

This year, we made history again by making our first-ever trip to state in school history. They truly helped make this team into a family. Both were willing to lay it all on the line for their teammates.”

A pretrial hearing for an Oregon woman accused of suffocating her 7-year-old son in 2021 has been continued to July.

Sarah Safranek, 35, appeared in court June 15 via video from the Ogle County Jail where she is being held on $2 million bond in connection with the death of her son, Nathaniel Burton.

She was arrested April 21, 2021, and pleaded not guilty May 5 to five counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery to a child.

Nathaniel, the son of Safranek and Bryan E. Burton, was pronounced dead at KSB Hospital in Dixon after Oregon police responded to a 911 call to the family’s home at 2:35 a.m. on Feb. 17, 2021.

The 911 caller said the boy was not breathing. An autopsy showed the boy died of suffocation and also had suffered a ruptured liver.

At the June 15 hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten and Safranek’s attorney, public defender Kathleen Isley, agreed to continue the hearing to July 13 to review more discovery evidence.

“We will get this resolved very soon,” said Leisten, referring to the discovery.

According to records obtained by

Shaw Media in a Freedom of Information Act request, the Department of Children and Family Services had visited the Safranek/Burton household nearly a dozen times over the course of two years, following up on five separate reports of suspected abuse and neglect.

Each time DCFS closed the case after finding no indications of parental wrongdoing.

Nathaniel Burton was 4 when the allegations first surfaced.

Here is a portion of the DCFS timeline: • When the first report was made, on Sept. 8, 2018, Nathaniel was living with his mother, his father, Bryan Burton, and two older half-sisters, then both younger than 10. (DCFS does not reveal who made the complaints.)

The first time, both parents were investigated for “substantial risk of physical injury/environment injurious to health and welfare by neglect; inadequate supervision; cuts, bruises, welts abrasions and oral injuries; and substantial risk of physical injury/environment injurious to health and welfare.”

DCFS investigators were unable to make contact with the family that day, but came back to the home three days later, and again on Oct. 31, observed all

The case was closed on Nov. 5, 2018, and the family was “referred for community-based services.”

• On Feb. 15, 2019, another report was made to DCFS, this one naming one of the girls, then 7, as the victim.

Both parents again were investigated

for cuts, bruises, welts abrasions and oral injuries. Both girls were observed at school and interviewed; both had scratches, which one said was caused by their cat, one had a rash; both denied either parent hurting them.

On Feb. 25, investigators talked with Nathaniel, who had “no visible signs of abuse or neglect.”

All three children were observed again on April 15, and the case was deemed unfounded and closed the next day.

• On Aug. 7, another report was made, this one listing all three children.

Again, Safranek was investigated for neglect; an investigator saw no signs that day, or four days later, on Aug. 11.

By then, the girls were living with their biological father.

All three children were visited one more time, on Sept. 25, in their respective homes. No visible signs of abuse or neglect were observed, and the case was closed on Oct. 2, with a third referral to community based services.

The final investigation was made on Feb. 17, when the agency received the report of Nathaniel’s death Safranek faces 20 years to life in prison if convicted of murder and six to 30 years if convicted of aggravated battery.

Town & Country Days make a splash on Saturday

The weather was perfect and the water was very wet at the Polo Fire Department’s Water Fights held Saturday during Town & Country Days.

First, kids stepped up to the temporary tank in front of the fire station and tried to push a big plastic ball across the water before their opponents did.

Kylee Diaz, 12, of Polo, didn’t let a broken left wrist stop her from competing.

“I had to just use my right hand, but it was fun,” she said. Kylee and her sister Leeann, 14, were helping run the kids’ event because their dad, Brandon King, is a Polo firefighter.

Trent Jordan, 10, of Milledgeville, also had a dad in the hunt.

“My dad’s a firefighter, so I thought I’d try this too,” Trent said.

After the kids’ event ended, Trent’s dad, Heath, stepped up with the Chadwick crew to try to best teams from Polo and Hooppole.

Trent watched from the shade along the sidelines with his family as his dad’s team held on in one of the matches to win.

When asked if he had any pointers for his dad, Trent said, “No, he did OK.”
