Merit Hope Namaste-Rose and 233 other contestants vie for title of nation’s top speller

ttaylor@shawmedia.com Merit Hope Namaste-Rose, representing David L. Rahn Junior High, has reached orthography’s big stage, joining 233 other contestants for the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The preliminary rounds started Tuesday in National Harbor, Maryland. The quarterfinals and semifinal are Wednesday and the finals will be Thursday night at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center just outside of Washington, D.C. For the final two rounds, actor and children’s literacy advocate LeVar Burton will be the presenter.

This year’s champion will receive a $50,000 cash prize. All competitors get online subscriptions to a dictionary and encyclopedia and also receive a proof set of coins from the U.S. Mint.

It’s the first time since 2019 that the entire competition will be conducted in-person.

Namaste-Hope won the Lee-Ogle-Whiteside Spelling Bee on Feb. 24 in Dixon, correctly spelling “geocaching” in the 11th round. In an earlier round she spelled “vaccination,” appropriate given the

The 14-year-old eighth grader from David L. Rahn Junior High School is competitive when it comes to playing pingpong and pickleball, according to her biography in the press materials provided by the bee.

Namaste-Hope declined an interview request ahead of the competition.

The first hurdle for Namaste-Hope is the three-round preliminaries, where she is matched against 38 other spellers.

That group includes three-time qualifiers Arnav Kolluru of Maroa-Forsyth Middle School in Decatur and Vikram Raju of Aurora, Colorado.

Mt. Morris marks Memorial Day Mother Nature smiled on the Memorial Day program in Mt. Morris on Monday.

Warm temperatures, sunny skies and a brisk wind to unfurl the flags made the perfect setting for the Mt. Morris American Legion Post 143’s program held at the American Legion Veterans Memorial Fountain on the corner of Wesley Avenue and Main Street in Mt. Morris.

This program included the reading of every name of all deceased Mt. Morris veterans from WWII to the present.

The others are Rehan Koshy, Advaith Balakrishnan, Avyay Kodali, Rumaysa Nadeem and Isaac Morowitz of Chicago, Sahasrad Sathish of Grayslake, Quinten Atutis of Freeport, Tejas Katira of Geneva, Max Foley of DeKalb, Jonathan Desir of Morris, Henry Olsen of Peoria, and Wolfgang Schaff of Loves Park.

The field includes four finalists from last year, including fourth-place finishers Dhroov Bharatia, Roy Siligman and Vivinsha Veduru, and seventh-place finisher Vihaan Sibal. All told, 45 competitors return from last year’s nationals.

The youngest competitors are 7-yearolds Matthew Yi of New Orleans and Nam Nguyen of Vermillion, South Dakota. The oldest is 15-year-old Charlie Palmore of Washington, D.C. The largest age group are 13-year-olds, of whom there are 81.

Most –106 – are eighth graders.

There are 128 males, 105 females and one non-binary speller in the field. Twenty-three have relatives who competed in the nationals.

Seven come from parochial schools, 11 are home schooled, 11 are from charter schools, 40 come from private schools and 165 are the product of public schools.

The 2021 champion was Zaila Avantgarde of New Orleans, the first Black American winner, who spelled “Murraya” in the finals.

This year, participants took part in an opening ceremony on Monday and will visit Planet Word, an immersive language museum. There will be tours of the D.C. area and an awards banquet and farewell party Friday night.

SENIOR CENTER Senior Center to Host Flag Day Program The Mt. Morris Senior Center will host a Flag Day Program on Tuesday, June 14, at 11:30 a.m. with a free luncheon to follow.

This year the program will feature patriotic music by local musician Denny Jacobs.

All are welcome to join the Senior Center for this outdoor ceremony where a new flag will be raised.

Celebrate together what the flag of our great nation means to each person. “You’re the emblem of the land I love. The home of the free and the brave. We take the stars from heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity, representing our liberty.”

The stripes represent the original 13 colonies and the stars represent the 50 states of the Union. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.

Free crosses are offered by church in support of Ukraine and its people

azoellner@shawmedia.com For the last couple of months, a sign outside East Jordan Methodist Church has welcomed anyone passing by to stop and take one or more of the white crosses set nearby.

“We started making the crosses about the same time [Russian President Vladimir] Putin started hurting and killing and doing all these atrocities in the Ukraine,” the Rev. Jim Miller said. “We decided we wanted to do something.”

The crosses, which are meant to be placed in a yard, are free. Each comes with a one-page printout that includes a prayer for Ukraine and a brief story about an incident in Frankenmuth, Michigan, where people rallied around the Christian cross.

“People want to rally around something in Ukraine,” Miller said, noting that part of the human condition is to constantly be on a crusade, although which crusade often changes week-toweek. “[A particular crusade] will be our weekly theme,” he said. “But by the next Monday, that becomes old hat and we have a new event, a new normal. I

don’t think the people of Ukraine have been able to establish any semblance of normalcy.

“We don’t want to wane away from the responsibility we all have to one another,” Miller said.

East Jordan Methodist Church Administrative Council Board Chairperson Kevin Deets is the one who cuts the wood for the crosses. Others then help assemble them.

“We’re very surprised at the amount of crosses we’ve been able to give out,” said Deets, who uses leftover wood he has from his woodworking business. “I’ve got a sense that the work we put in is not for nothing. I don’t mind doing work if it’s fruitful, and it seems to be, so I’m happy to do it.”

More than 300 crosses have been picked up, Miller said. They plan to continue making and offering the crosses “until people get tired of taking them,” he said.

“It’s like feeding the hungry and tired,” Miller said. “You feed until the hungry is gone.”

Ogle County Health Department gathering donations for community baby shower Donations accepted in Oregon, Rochelle through July 8; event set rain or shine for July 15

azoellner@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Health Department is collecting items for a community baby shower.

“As a health department, we do an IPLAN – Illinois Project for Local Assessment of Needs,” said Anisa Torres, county public health services coordinator. “We had identified the top three priorities as access to care, mental health and chronic disease.

This baby shower was a quick and

easy way to address access to care for moms and families in need with everything going on.”

The event is scheduled for July 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the main Ogle County Health Department office’s parking lot. It’s located at 907 Pines Road, Oregon. Donations are being accepted up until July 8.

There are no specific qualifications one must meet in order to receive items, Torres said. The community baby shower will be set up similar to a garage sale, with items laid out on tables for people to shop through.

“We’re keeping it open to the community as a whole,” she said. “Obviously, we’re trying to target people who are in desperate need of it, but we’re not excluding anyone.”

Chana School sale June 3-4 The Chana School Foundation will have its 24th annual Rummage Sale at the Oregon Coliseum in the lower level on Friday, June 3, from 8 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, June 4, from 8 to noon.

Proceeds from the sale are used to support the 1883 Chana School Museum.

The Chana School is the only wooden two-room schoolhouse in Illinois on the National Register of Historical Places.

The historical 1883 Chana School Museum is funded entirely by donations, grants and fundraisers.

Thirty-five celebrate and reflect on years at PCHS

Thirty-five students graduated from Polo Community High School the afternoon of May 29.

“Our class has pushed through COVID starting in sophomore year, masks and peers being at home junior year and, of course, senioritis senior

year,” Class of 2022 valedictorian Taryn Zell said.

Zell and Madissen Allen, the salutatorian, recapped some of the Class of 2022’s memorable moments during their joint senior class remarks.

Among the memories were the recess dance competitions the girls held; “playing” Family Feud at a talent show and getting into “the biggest

fight ever” that led to everyone getting counseling; watching movies and playing bags and kickball at the senior camp out; and when classmate Denesy Lackland became “Mr. L” and teaching Mrs. Schlegels’ class.

“Our class is more like a family than anything, and we wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Zell said. “We will always look back on the funny memo-

ries and how we all shared moments of joy.”

“It is a bittersweet day, but let’s celebrate how far we have come,” Allen said. “It hasn’t been easy, but we did it together, as a family.”

This year’s event was held indoors in the high school gym following two years of outdoor events because of the pandemic.

Pond brothers designed structures in Ogle County

rving D. and Allen B. Pond were born in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

They attended the University of Michigan studying architecture.

They were founding members of the Cliff Dwellers Club of Chicago and the Eagle’s Nest Art Colony.

They designed several buildings in Chicago and built student unions on the campuses of Purdue University, University of Michigan, Michigan State and the University of Kansas.

They were interested in the arts and crafts areas and inserted art into their buildings. The Pond brothers were part of the artists’ scene in Chicago that included Lorado Taft, Bert Leston Taylor, Jane Adams and Harriet Monroe.

They combined art and architecture in the period after the Great Chicago Fire. This was called the Arts and Crafts Style Architecture.

Frank Lowden and the Pond brothers were friends. They designed the Lorado Taft Midway studio located at Hyde Park, Illinois, in 1909, Lowden’s mansion at Sinnissippi Farms in 1906, the Oregon Public Library in 1909 and Taft’s Soldiers’ Monument in 1916.

We have a statement from Pond and Pond to Frank Lowden detailing the costs of his mansion at $89,290. Pond’s architectural fee was $5,634.80.

The Oregon Public Library is a fine example of the Arts and Crafts Architecture drawn by Pond and Pond. This Andrew Carnegie Library was built in 1908 by M. D. Smith of Dixon.

These paintings and sculptures are now located in the library gallery. The library was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on May 9, 2003.

Open Show at Ogle County Fair is open to adults, too!

The show competition at the Ogle County Fair isn’t just for kids. Adults are encouraged to show off their talents and expertise in the annual Open Show and maybe win a cash premium in the process.

The 168th Ogle County Fair will be held from Wednesday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 7, at the fairgrounds, 1440 N. Limekiln Rd., one mile west of Oregon just north of Illinois 64.

he weather held out with no rain on the day 90 seventh and eighth graders were given a history tour of Buffalo Grove and Polo.

It was cold but a good jacket takes care of that. Fifteen Polo Historical Society docents enjoyed giving the early history at six sites.

Three sites were on the Peoria-Galena trail: Henry School, Buffalo Grove Cemetery and the Polo Lime Kiln. In town we had Polo History Museum, Aplington House and the Presbyterian Church. All played a part in the early history of Polo.

Kids were attentive and asked good questions. One student was interested in finding out that her Aunt Lucille Woodin had made the Underground Railroad Quilt at Aplington House.

The quilt made by Audrey Plum’s room mothers many years ago brought forth a number of comments. Students

At the Polo History Museum they found out about the Native American villages, the buffalo in the area, our military part of the museum, what Central Stamping made in Polo, and early farming. Carla Singly and I had handled the tour for many years and this year Carla did the Henry School herself.

Joe Bleistein has been the mainstay for the Schryver collection and I did tell briefly about the abolitionists that were part of the early Presbyterian Church.

Joe has told people about the Schryver Native American collection for a number of years and he also was there last week to talk to the school students.

Eventually he will be putting the Blough arrow heads together when the cabinet is ready.

Glass still needs to be put back into the cabinet and lights into it. It takes time to get all of that accomplished.

I can no longer do much talking since I just do not have the physical

stamina and I appreciated all the help.

The students I believe walked back to the Polo Lime Kiln and no doubt enjoyed the hike back along the woods.

I did not get out there to see the blue bells in that area but had some of my own as they bloomed in my yard.

The students also enjoyed ringing the church bell after Susan Zook had told about the building of the church.

I think Polo Historical Society gave them a wonderful history tour and they now know a little more about where they live.

Thanks to all those who helped and students were told they can come back during Town and Country Days for more information if they so desire. It was a great day for everyone.

Vintage ‘base ball’ team falls, but the experience was a win-win

ehinton@oglecountynews.com DYERSVILLE, IOWA – The weather and venue were picture perfect May 27, so an 8-7 loss to the Canton Cornshuckers in the seventh inning didn’t sting that much for the Ganymedes, Oregon’s vintage base ball team.

“I’ve never been here before so being able to play here is pretty cool,” said Steve Tilton, a long-time Ganymede player and McKinney, Texas, resident who flew out just for the games.

The 20-member Ganymedes squad played a doubleheader against their Michigan counterparts in both teams’ inaugural competition on the field made famous by the 1989 “Field of Dreams” movie set in Dyersville, Iowa.

“We have enough for two teams so we are playing a doubleheader. This is a bucket-list game for everybody. The weather could not be more perfect,” said Mark Herman, team caption for the Ganymedes. “It was raining when

Under sunny skies and with temperatures in the mid-70s the Ganymedes and the Conshuckers squared off playing 1867 rules on the perfectly manicured field, viewable from the porch of the house used in the movie.

Vintage rules base ball (spelled as two words in the 1800s) is played with authentic wool uniforms, no gloves and gentlemanly conduct.

The Ganymedes rented the venue for three hours on Friday night with exclusive use of the field. The first

“The site is also booked for the new MLB August blockout dates for their annual game and few vintage teams will be getting games there in the future,” Herman said.

Continued from Page 9 The Oregon Park District filled a tour bus with Ganymedes fans who made a day of the two-hour trip to Dyersville to see the games. Fifty bus riders played Ganymedes trivia during a portion of the trip. Some were firsttime fans while others have followed the team since its conception in 2005.

“One of the questions was who were the players who have played for the Ganymedes since 2005 and I knew it,” said Sandy Strohecker, whose son Tim “Two Base” Strohecker” is one of the original three.

Nicknames are also part of vintage base ball.

Nate Girton, Oregon High School baseball coach, drove out for the games and sat comfortably in his yard chair along the third base line.

“It’s my third time out here. I think it is every kid’s dream to come here and play. For some of these guys, they are living their livelong dream. As a baseball coach sitting out here in the ‘cheap seats’ I’m jealous,” Girton said.

Dave and Shirley Stenger of Oregon also made the trip.

“This is pretty neat. There are a lot of Oregon people here,” Dave said.

“Hopefully this will get more people interested and they will come out to the Chana school to watch the home games,” Shirley said.

Crete and Bob LeFevre of Mt. Morris arrived on the tour bus. Bob has been at Ganymedes games in the past, while Crete, a lifelong softball player and also an IHSA umpire, is new to the 1867-style game.

“The first game was good. It’s interesting, but I wouldn’t want to play by these rules. And the bus ride was nice,” Crete said. “When we arrived

we got to listen to one of the ‘ghosts’ from the movie. He was a catcher. He spoke to us when we got here. He was on the set for 21 days and was on screen for 12 seconds.”

And four Oregon High School athletes also watched the game while sitting in the grass near left field “I would play it. It’d be fun,” said Liz Mois, a member of the OHS softball team.

“Nope, I would need a glove,” said Olivia Wynn, a volleyball player.

“Obviously, I would play,” said Kyler Early, whose dad Justin “Butter” Early is a Ganymedes player.

On Saturday, the teams played again, this time on the Ganymedes’ home field in Oregon.

“Unfortunately, Canton swept the series. Both teams played well on a beautiful late spring day!” Herman said in an email. “We look forward to playing the Cornshuckers again at the

Henry Ford Museum Greenfield Village World Tournament of Historic Base Ball on Aug. 13 and 14 in Dearborn, Michigan.

The Ganymedes’ next match will be June 12 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, against the Milwaukee Grays.

The Ganymedes play home games on the lawn (Iron Chest Field) next to the historic Chana School Museum, located along River Road in Oregon.

Those games are played using 1860 rules.

The team’s run for a title at the 18th annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball in 2021 ended with a “wellplayed” loss to perennial tournament champion the Saginaw Old Golds in August, capping the team’s ‘best-ever’ run at the unique competition.

Forreston FFA Alumni Tractor and Truck Pull is June 4

The 11th annual Forreston FFA Alumni Tractor and Truck Pull will be held on Saturday, June 4, beginning at noon.

Classes for Antique tractors begin at noon, followed by Farm Stock classes at 2, Truck classes at 4, and finally at 7, Badger State classes.

The pull takes place during Leaf River Daze at the track behind the River Valley Complex.

Admission is $15 with kids 5 and under free.

Cheryl was born March 3, 1938, in Peoria, Illinois, the daughter of Roy and Esther Garkey. Cheryl was a graduate of Oregon High School Class of 1956. She went on to work for the Mt Morris Times from 1976 to 1985.

Cheryl then went to work for Kable News in Mt Morris until her retirement. She was an active member of the Polo Senior Center.

Cheryl enjoyed babysitting for family, road trips with friends, spring flowers and her pets

– especially Tigger and Jazzi.

Cheryl is survived by her sister-in-law Carol Garkey of Polo, nieces Cindy (Mike) Sullivan and Jan Garkey, nephews David (Lori) Garkey and Rod (Deb Bryan) Garkey, special friend Susan Gipe and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

Dominguez finishes 10th in discus at state track meet

Oregon’s Daniel Dominguez placed 10th in the discus at the 1A State Track and Field Meet in Charleston on May 28.

Dominguez recorded a discus throw of 44.69 meters, good for 10th in the field of 37 on May 26.

After an hour-and-a-half of weather delays, including a 30-minute lightning delay mid-discus, the Oregon thrower redeemed his earlier 23rd-place finish (13.40m) in shot put and punched his ticket to the state final in the last event of the day.

“Shot, it was kind of a bad day, but we got through it. Once we got to discus, it was over with, it’s done, it’s on to the next job,” Dominguez said.

“Today, I felt like I finally got into the groove that I usually am in at the end [of discus] on my last two throws.

Dominguez said he enjoyed competing against familiar faces in the state prelims.

“We all know each other. It’s all fun,” he said. “It’s always fun going against people you’ve already met, especially going to indoor state for shot. It’s basically the same people from the same flight. And the same

rowly missed the cut for the state final in the 110 hurdles as the third-place finisher in his heat, clocking a time of 15.94 seconds – just .03 seconds slower than the last qualifier in the event.

Beltran also had a nine-way tie for 15th in the high jump, leaping 1.85 meters.

“I’m just feeling really blessed to be down here. Wouldn’t be down here without my coaches and family support, friend support, teammate support,” Beltran said. “Not the exact outcome I was hoping for in high jump. ...

I think it was just kind of an off day.

Definitely not my best race [in the 110 hurdles], but I went out here, gave it 100%.”

Rock Falls’ Matthew Marcum was the cream of the crop from the area, winning the Class 2A state championship in the 300-meter hurdles with a run of 39.59 seconds, edging East St. Louis’ Demarlynn Taylor by .3 seconds.

Dixon’s Dre Jackson was a medalist individually in the shot put, hurling a personal-record 16.50 meters on his final attempt of the day to finish fourth in the Class 2A field.

Newman’s Jacob Donald, Wyatt Widolff, Thomas Powers and Lucas Simpson placed fourth in the Class 1A 4x800 with a time of an 8:09.09.

The ‘Cardiac Kids of Forreston’ headed to the state finals

W

hat a roller-coaster ride it has been for the Forreston softball program the past four seasons, with the big thrill culminating Monday at the 1A supersectional final with a dramatic comefrom-behind win over Biggsville West Central.

In 2018, I remember watching Dakota sticking a dagger in the Cardinals at the regional final at Freeport, scoring in the seventh inning for a wild 11-10 win.

Besides the girls, I felt so bad for Kim Snider, as genuinely nice as any coach I’ve been around.

The next year, Forreston got that regional title, but lost another heartbreaker in the sectional semis, 12-10 to Eastland. After COVID-19 stole any 2020 possibilities, it was Pearl City doing the damage the following year with a 3-2 regional title win over the Cardinals.

After Forreston pulled out a 12th-inning squeaker over Pearl City at this year’s sectional semifinal, I sent Kim a congratulatory email, saying “How exciting.” Little did I know that those seventh inning comebacks were just getting started.

In the sectional final, three runs in

The win over Biggsville was no fluke, as Forreston pounded the ball, with 12 hits compared with nine for their opponent.

Biggsville’s trip to the super was similar to Forreston in that they needed eight innings to advance to the sectional final and then eked out a 2-1 win in final.

Compared with baseball, having a good pitcher in softball makes all the difference in the world.

Being involved in track and field, I rarely get to softball games, but am making my first trip to the state finals to cover Forreston against Casey-Westfield. With the type of crowds that Forreston gets for its sporting events, a large fan base should be present at

Louisville Slugger Field in Peoria.

Lost in all the publicity garnered by the Cardiac Kids of Forreston was the excellent showing by the Oregon and Stillman Valley softball teams in the 2A sectional.

Richmond-Burton took out both squads, but only by 1-run games, again exhibiting how tight so many of these games truly are. Then in the supersectional R-B lost 1-0 to Rockridge, winners of their last 63 games.

Oregon loses a lot with its senior class, but has talent coming back.

Combined with Nate Rogers as coach, the Hawks will be in the mix for 2023.

One advantage of living in small towns like ours in Ogle county is seeing kids grow up and I can remember coach Rogers when he was kid playing youth baseball.

That thought was on my mind as high-school graduations played out.

How many games we won in our highschool careers is not as important as the type of men and women we grow up to be.

I’ve known people whose highlight in life was the glory days of prep sports and you probably have to.

I’m not sure how many teachers and coaches are retiring this year, but

did notice that Don Reece and Mark Downey of Polo are. Those two gentlemen were a pleasure to be around and will be missed.

This past weekend was spent at the boys state track meet, where for only the second time in the past 20 years Oregon was shut out of having a state medalist.

Daniel Dominguez, who placed last year, finished one spot out of the medal hunt in the discus. Forreston-Polo had a similar fate, coming home empty-handed, also a rarity for them.

In fact the only state place for the county was a seventh place in the 1,600 relay by Byron. Losing a season to COVID-19 hurt track more than most other sports.

If you’re a numbers person, track and field meets have all kinds of neat data. Here’s an example of one – an eighth grader from Bloomington pole vaulted 15-feet at the junior high state meet, a mark that would have won the 1A high school competition.

dwussow@shawmedia.com STERLING – After four innings of Monday’s Class 1A Sterling Supersectional, the Forreston softball team found itself in a precarious position, down 4-0 against a good West Central team with the fate of its season hanging in the balance.

But just like the entire postseason, the resilient Cardinals (23-4) never quit, chipping away at the deficit in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings until they won 6-5 on an Ella Ingram solo home run.

It was the third game in a row with a walk-off hit for Forreston.

“Ella’s walk-off home run was amazing. I didn’t take anything off in the dugout because we knew something like this was gonna happen, especially after the past two games,” Forreston senior pitcher Kara Erdmann said. “We definitely give a lot of credit right now to Ella for going yard.

“Moving on to state feels amazing,

especially being the first softball team in Forreston history to go down. At this point right now, being first to state, not too bad, so we’re definitely excited to keep playing on.”

The Heat (28-8) took a 5-3 lead in the top of the seventh after Brynna Seitz led off with a triple and scored on an error on Bailey Ryan’s batted ball. But Forreston would not be denied, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to punch its ticket to state.

“Our last few games have been just like that, and I knew we could come up from behind, and we did,” Forreston’s Brooke Boettner said.

Rylee Broshous led off the final frame with a single between short and third, and Boettner followed with tworun homer to tie the game; it was her second game-tying home run in the bottom of the seventh in the last three games.

The next two at-bats resulted in groundouts, but with the game tied at

“I was just thinking. ‘I’m gonna hit this ball, and we’re going to state,’” Ingram said. “I honestly didn’t even know [it was a home run] until I got to third and saw everyone at home plate.”

“That was so awesome,” Boettner added. “We’ve never gone this far. I just couldn’t believe it.”

West Central was in control early, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a Shelby Bowman RBI double to right field.

In the top of the third, the Heat stretched their lead to four runs, getting back-to-back solo home runs from Addie Seitz and Mackenzy Ludington, as well as a Ryan single and a Bowman RBI triple.

“We knew we had to fight back,” Erdmann said. “It was going to be a tough one, but I knew after the past two games we definitely needed to add more runs.”

Forreston finally got a rally going in the bottom of the fifth, cutting its deficit to 4-2. Alaina Miller started it off by bunting a single, then Erdmann doubled off the center-field fence and Hailey Greenfield hit a two-out, tworun single to center to bring in Miller and Erdmann.

“It was pretty awesome,” Boettner said of Greenfield’s two-run single.

“We were all pretty excited, and we knew we could do it from there.”

Erdmann conceded a single to the first batter in the top of the sixth, but struck out two of the next three and got a flyout to keep the margin at two runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals added one more run, pulling to within 4-3. Aubrey Sanders was hit by a pitch to initiate the rally, then Breanna Kloster grounded out, and Sanders came home when Miller’s infield

single was mishandled.

In the top of the seventh, Forreston gave up one run, but answered with three of its own in the bottom of the inning, clinching its first state tournament appearance in program history.

Broshous was 3 for 4 to lead the Cardinals, while Ingram, Erdmann and Hailey Greenfield were all 2 for 4.

Miller was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Erdmann threw a complete game

for the win, allowing five runs on nine hits, and striking out seven with no walks.

Bowman, Ryan and Brynna Seitz each went 2 for 4 to lead West Central at the plate, and Bowman had two RBIs. Addie Seitz took the loss, pitching a complete game. She allowed six runs on 12 hits, walked zero and struck out five.

SECTIONAL RECAP Class 1A South Beloit Sectional Forreston 8, Dakota 7: Breanna Kloster’s walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning sent the Forreston softball team into the Class 1A Elite Eight on May 28, as the Cardinals won the South Beloit Sectional final 8-7 over Dakota.

Kloster’s hit scored Hailey Greenfield and Ella Ingram to cap a three-run rally in Forreston’s final at-bat. Kloster finished with three RBIs, while Brooke Boettner was 3 for 4 with two RBIs, and Rylee Broshous homered and drove in two runs.

Ingram also added an RBI for the Cardinals (21-4.

Kara Erdmann went the distance in the circle, allowing seven runs and six hits, with six strikeouts and a walk.

Forreston led 2-0 after the first inning and 4-1 through two innings before Dakota (15-8) scored two runs in the third, one run each in the fourth and fifth, then two more in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead.

Broshous hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 12th inning on May 24 to lift the Cardinals to a walk-off victory in the 1A South Beloit Sectional semifinal.

It was the third home run of the season for Broshous, to go with a few inside-thepark homers as well.

“I stepped up and I knew I needed to do something. It felt amazing when I hit the ball, I knew it was going over,” Broshous said. “She was holding me up, trying to get me out of rhythm from the mound, so I called timeout and I took a deep breath. I needed to do something, so that’s what I did.”

Brooke Boettner sent the game into extra innings with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh. Pearl City had led most of the game up to that point after scoring a run in the top of the second.

“I said, ‘If I don’t do it now, then I don’t know if we’re going to have another chance,’” Boettner said. “It just was a nice feeling, because it got us tied.”

It was the first extra-inning game of the season for the Cardinals.

“I’m at a loss for words. They’re a good team, we’re a good team, but I didn’t think

we were going to be in the 12th inning,” Forreston coach Kim Snider said. “It was a pitchers’ duel the whole game, nobody could come up with that big hit, and we had our [Nos.] 2 and 3 hitters come up with some big ones there at the end. But congratulations to Pearl City on their season.”

Police responded to the 300 block of W Hitt Street at 9:40 p.m. for a report of a domestic disturbance. After an investigation, Cha E. Keller, 33, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for disorderly conduct, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, and resisting a peace officer. Keller was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

May 8 At approximately 2:30 a.m., police located Jessica C Engelkens, 37, of Mt. Morris, in the 10 block of W Main St. Engelkens was arrested on a Lee County warrant for failure to appear. Engelkens was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

May 12 At 3:55 p.m., police responded to a single vehicle accident in the 200 block of S. Mckendrie Avenue. A vehicle driven by, a male juvenile, 16, of Mt Morris, crashed into a utility pole.

Miller was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Miller was given an I-Bond.

May 15 Jason W. Yorton, 47, was issued a citation at 10:10 a.m. for speeding, 50 mph in a 30 mph speed zone, after a traffic stop in the 200 block of E. Route 64. Yorton was given an I-Bond.

Colin T. Gudella, 18, of Hanover Park, was issued a citation for speeding, 45 mph in a 30 mph speed zone, after a traffic stop in the 500 block of W. Hitt Street. Gudella was given an I-Bond.

May 16 Jacob B Williams, 20, was issued a citation at 4:42 a.m. for speeding, 55 mph in a 30 mph speed zone following a traffic stop in the 300 block of W. Hitt Street. Williams was given an I-Bond.

May 18 At approximately 9:35 a.m., police located a female subject walking in the area of the 100 block of Emily Street. After a brief investigation, Victoria Gonzalez, 37, of Mt Morris, was arrested on a Lee County warrant for failure to appear.

Gonzalez was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

May 24 At approximately 12:32 a.m., police were sent to an activated burglar alarm in the 100 block of E. Hitt St. After an investigation, Jacob U. Feiden, 28, of Mt. Morris, was arrested and charged with burglary and criminal damage to property. Feiden was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

At approximately 9:50 a.m., police were sent to the area of

the 300 block of W. Hitt Street for the complaint of loud music. After an investigation, Cha E. Keller, 33, of Mt Morris, was arrested on an Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

May 27 Richard Haan, Jr., 59, of Mt. Morris, was issued a city ordinance citation at 6:10 a.m. for trash/container violation.

This violation occurred in the 10 block of E Front St. Adedotun E. Bello, 34, of Chicago, was issued a citation at 9:03 a.m. for speeding - 64 mph in a 30 mph speed zone after a traffic stop on W. Hitt Street. Bello was given a notice to appear.

Michael D Fini, 28, of Canton, Michigan, was issued a citation for speeding - 54 mph in a 30 mph speed zone at 10:35 a.m. following a traffic stop in the 100 block of E. Route 64. Fini was given an I-Bond and released on scene.

Brent Burright, 31, of Mt. Morris, was issued a city ordinance citation at 11:35 a.m. for s grass/weeds violation.

This violation occurred in the 400 block E. Route 64.

A approximately 12:21 p.m., police were sent to the 10 block of W. Center Street for the report of a disturbance.

After an investigation, Bradley A. Boyd, 42, of Mt. Morris, was arrested and charge with disorderly conduct, resisting a peace officer, aggravated assault to a peace officer, and aggravated battery to a peace officer. Boyd was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Theses charges are merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proved guilty.

First installment of property taxes is due June 10 Ogle County Collector Linda Beck reminds property owners that the first installment of their property tax bill is due June 10.

Payment methods include cash or check (payable to Ogle County Collector). In-person payments can be made at the Treasurer’s office located in the “old” Courthouse at 105 S. Fifth St., Suite 114, Oregon, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday excluding holidays.

The mailing address is Ogle County Collector, P.O. Box 40, Oregon, IL 61061. Mailed payments must be postmarked by the due date to be considered timely.

Late payments will incur a fee of 1.5% per month or part of a month after the due date and must be remitted by mail or at the

collector’s office.

Payments also can be made at any bank in Ogle County.

Beck’s office is also offering the option of online credit card payments.

Diamond Davis, 21, of Rockford, was arrested at 8:47 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 108. Davis also was cited for no front registration, no valid registration and operating an uninsured vehicle. Davis was released on an I-Bond at the scene and given a future court date.

Janet Harvey, 59, of Holcomb, was arrested at 9:51 p.m. for aggravated domestic battery after deputies responded to the 200 block of Caroline Street in Holcomb. for a domestic.

Harvey was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge.

May 30 James L. Musgrave, 38 of Rochelle, was arrested at 8:16 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop at N. Illinois Route 2 and Camling Road.

Musgrave was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Musgrave was additionally cited for improper use of registration, no valid registration, and an inoperable trailer taillight/brake light.

Deputies, along with the Polo Police Department and Polo Fire Department responded to South Freeport Road and West Sterling road for a single-vehicle accident with injuries.

After a brief investigation, Deputies determined a Toyota Corolla was traveling south on South Freeport Road when it failed to stop at West Sterling Road.

The vehicle then traveled across West Sterling Road resting in a field.

Brittany Madonna, 25 of Tiskilwa, was arrested for driving while unlicensed.

Madonna was also issued citations for disobeying a stop sign and improper lane usage.

Madonna was released on a $2,500 I-Bond after being treated at KSB Hospital for minor injuries. A female passenger sustained critical injuries during the crash.

At 7:30 p.m., deputies responded to an unwanted subject in the 400 block of Linda Avenue of Rochelle. After a brief investigation, Levi Wolfe, 33, was arrested for domestic battery. Wolfe was transported to Ogle County Jail where he was held pending a court appearance.

Darius Williams 25, of Rockford, was arrested at 8:13 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop at Illinois Route 64 and Mulford Road for speeding. He was also cited for speeding. Williams also had a valid failure to appear warrant.

Williams was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity.

May 23 Travis L. Adams, 38, of Rochelle, was arrested at 9:11 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop near the intersection of Illinois Route 38 and South Chana Road. Adams also was cited for expired registration, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and an equipment violation.

Adams was given an I-Bond and a return court date and was released from the scene.

May 24 Garrett A. Atkins, 22, of Byron, was arrested at 4:40 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies located a crash in the 200 block of S. Franklin Street in Byron. Atkins also was cited for illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and no insurance. Atkins was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Debora Waters, 44, of Lindenwood, was arrested at 3:08 p.m. on an outstanding Winnebago County warrant for failure to appear after a traffic stop in the 7000 block of Illinois Route 251. Waters also was cited for driving while license suspended and speeding. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and also was given an I-Bond for the citations.

Jennifer Nash, 48, of Holcomb, was arrested at 3:34 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop on Illinois Route 251. Nash also was cited for expired registration. Nash was released on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

Austin R. Cantrell, 25, of DeKalb, was arrested at 10:15 p.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 106. Cantrell also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and obstruction of windshield.

Cantrell was transported to the Ogle County

Jail without issue.

May 25 Mary Snyder, 54, of Davis Junction, was arrested for aggravated driving while license revoked after deputies responded to the 100 block of Autumnwood Lane for a reported car in a ditch at 9:41 p.m. Deputies located Snyder at a later time and transported her to Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond. Snyder also was cited for driving while license revoked, leaving the scene, illegal transportation of alcohol, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed.

May 26 At approximately 12:30 p.m., deputies and the Rochelle Fire Department responded to a dump trailer fire that was being pulled by a Ford truck on a roadway located in the 18000 block of East Creston Road. The trailer fire quickly was extinguished by the Rochelle Fire Department. The truck driver, Arturo Juarez Guevara, 37, of Creston, was arrested for driving while license suspended. Juarez Guevara was released from the scene on an I-Bond and given a later court date.

Devonte Williams, 28, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was arrested at 7:13 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 105. Williams also was cited for lane violation. Williams was given an I-Bond and return court date and was released on scene.

May 27 Miguel Zepeda, 54, of Belvidere, was arrested at 9:05 p.m. for aggravated driving while license revoked after a traffic stop in the 19000 block of Illinois Route 64. Zepeda also was cited for speeding. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge.

May 28 Roger Fernandez-Sabillon, 29, of Houston, Texas, was arrested at 1:30 a.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 97. Fernandez-Sabillon also was cited for an improper registration light. Fernandez-Sabillon was released on an I-Bond at the scene and given a future court date.

Ivan Johnson, 58, of Rockford, was arrested at 3:37 p.m. for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop in the 3000 block of Illinois Route 2. Johnson also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper use of registration, no front license plate and defective brake light. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.
