McGee, a Korean War veteran, was pleasantly surprised when family members from Indiana and Tennessee joined many of his friends to wish him a happy birthday.

“All these wonderful people came here today for me. It’s still a good town,” McGee said.

SPECIAL EVENT Free oak tree saplings available The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will have free oak tree saplings available for Ogle County residents on April 22 and 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 909 Pines Road, Oregon, while supplies last.

There will be a total of 900 bur oak, red oak and swamp white oak trees for distribution on a first come, first served basis. Residents can take up to 10 (total) saplings per household to plant on their property while supplies last.

Take only what you can plant and care for.

This means caring for it after it is planted (watering, weeding, wrapping) and protecting it from animals and mowers.

The free saplings will be located in the garage on the south side of the parking lot at the OCSWMD. They will be individually wrapped bare rooted saplings, should be kept cool and moist, and must be planted as soon as possible.

Information about each species, planting instructions, and tree posters also will be available. The site is under video surveillance.

The limit per household is 10 trees.

Superintendent outlines options for ‘DLR Complex’ Mahoney says ultimate decision is up to school board members

ehinton@oglecountynews.com Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney has asked Oregon School Board members to start assessing options for the David L. Rahn Junior High building and property once the school officially closes at the end of this year school year.

“I will be asking the board in the near future for some direction,” Mahoney said during the board’s regular Monday meeting before outlining options for the property, located on Brayton Road in Mt. Morris. “I have put together what I believe are the options for the board.”

Mahoney said the board’s options for the “DLR Complex” were to keep it, demolish it, sell it or transfer the property to another governmental agency.

In order to keep the vacant building, he estimated an annual cost of $35,000 to $50,000 to drain water from the pipes, heat the structure, maintain the bus barn, mow and maintain the exterior, plow the bus parking lot, secure all doors and actively inspect the building.

He estimated it would cost the district $175,000 to abate asbestos from the building and another $450,000 to $500,000 to demolish it in order to keep the land. He said the abatement cost is less for a building being demolished rather than being renovated.

The process to sell the property would include the board approving a resolution containing the terms and conditions of the sale. Within 60 days after the passage of the resolution, the property could be sold at a public auc-

The board could also opt to transfer the property to another governmental agency as long as both parties agreed on terms and conditions for the transfer.

“One of the things I think the board should do – if they don’t want to keep the property – is to at least formally offer the property to the Mt. Morris Village Board. You could do it [transfer] at no cost,” Mahoney said.

He said he was approached by a group who was interested in acquiring the property to create a college in Mt. Morris, but not for three years in order to secure funds to establish the institution.

“They sent a proposal and requested that we don’t do anything for three years and then they would then use that building along with some other buildings in Mt. Morris,” Mahoney said. “They don’t have the revenue now or the resources now to make a purchase.

“But I do want to remind you that

every year we keep that building up and operational we’re spending money on maintenance,” he said. “And we would have to fix any additional mechanical things that could go bad.”

He said the board will make the decision on what to do with the property. “I am just the conduit to you guys. You will ultimately make the decision,” Mahoney said.

He also cautioned the board that letting the building sit vacant for any extended period could create additional security concerns for the district as well as the community.

“Next month I will have this back on the agenda and ask for some direction from the board on where you want me to go from the information I provided,” Mahoney said.

Why close DLR? The school board voted in February to close the school and move seventh grade and eighth grade students to Oregon High School, five miles to the east, despite pleas from Mt. Morris officials and residents to keep

DLR open.

DLR is the last remaining school in Mt. Morris following the merging of the two districts in 1994 after the Mt. Morris School District dissolved because of financial reasons.

Mahoney first proposed closing DLR in May 2021 citing decreasing enrollments throughout the district and increasing maintenance costs at DLR as reasons for the closure.

On Aug. 16, 2021, school board members voted to close the school. The school board rescinded its August vote in January after Rob Urish – a former school board member and member of the advisory board formed last year for input on the closure – said the school board did not follow an Illinois law that went into effect July 30, 2021.

The law required three public hearings be held prior to a vote to shutter the school.

Urish said the meetings had to be held to solicit input from communities regarding the closure of a school unless the building was deemed to be unsafe, unsanitary or unfit for occupancy.

In addition to saving money on maintenance costs, Mahoney has said the pros of closing DLR include allowing junior high students to have access to additional elective courses at the high school; aligning the curriculum more closely and providing more frequent opportunities for staff to collaborate; bringing more coaches/sponsors to a building where some sports/ activities have no coaches in the building; and allowing for more staff collaboration while also giving younger athletes more immediate exposure to older athletes.

But in a multi-page presentation made in fall 2021, the advisory board argued that the 1950s DLR building was in “sound shape,” could still serve as a “viable educational facility” and that the district’s finances did not warrant the school’s closing.

UPCOMING EVENTS Open houses at Polo schools on April 28

The Polo Community School District will host an open house at all three of its school buildings on Thursday, April 28, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Centennial Elementary’s open house will be from 5 to 6 p.m.

Aplington Middle School and Polo Community High School will have their open houses from 6 to 7 p.m.

“This is a great chance to come out and see all the remodeling that was done at each of the schools this summer,” superintendent Kelly Mandrell said.

Polo Fire to host annual Spring Breakfast

The Polo Fire Protection District’s annual Spring Breakfast

will be held on Sunday, April 24.

Breakfast will be served at the firehouse – located at 206 S. Franklin Ave., Polo – from 7 a.m. to noon as both dine in and carryout.

This year’s menu includes biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage links, pancakes, milk and orange juice.

Donations will be accepted; the proceeds will go toward the purchase of new equipment.

Oregon church offers meals on Wednesdays

Members of the Oregon United Methodist Church, 200 S. Fourth St., Oregon, are giving away to-go dinners for anyone who would like a meal.

This event is strictly a drive-thru service on Wednesdays through May from 5:15 to 6 p.m. as long as the food lasts.

Donations are accepted but not expected. Reservations are not required but help members prepare the right amount of food.

Miller taught children of Russian immigrants in Austria

T

his week was a busy time on the internet. Shirley, from Port Richey, Florida, contacted me first through Polo City Hall about Lola Miller.

My first thought was perhaps Lola was connected to the J. P. Miller Buggy Shop. I was wrong. Lola was the daughter of Clarence and Cora Miller who lived in Lincoln Township.

Lola was a friend of Shirley for many years and when Lola died, Shirley purchased her baby quilt made in 1916 and a German Hummel. Shirley now wants these to come back to Polo and we would be glad to take them.

I needed to find out a little more about Lola other than the fact that she had been a school teacher. Linda started researching her and we found out she was a first grade teacher in the Mt. Morris School District. An article in the Dixon Telegraph of 1954 told of how Lola was to spend the summer teaching in Austria.

Usually when a teacher teaches summer school, she receives a salary but in this situation Lola had to pay for the honor of teaching in an Austrian work camp at Styre, Austria.

There they went by bus through five countries before they reached Austria. This work was funded by the Church of the Brethren and Brethren Services. When they arrived at their destination, Lola taught kindergarten students that were children of Russian refugees.

The families lived in one-room abandoned Army facilities and they had a small bit of land for a garden.

Most of their food was given to them by the church. Children at lunch had only bread with lard on it and they suffered from hunger with many health problems.

Someone supplied the students with school supplies similar to what children had here in the U.S. Most of the children caught on quickly and they were German speaking. A German speaking aid was provided. I can remember having a Vietnamese speaking child in first grade and it was

quite a challenge.

They used the outdoors as part of their classroom. While on walking trails, they would find berries to supplement their diets.

Children started school at the age of 3 and at the age of 14 they were tested.

Those with ability were sent on to school and others were then slated to be sent to trade schools. Many simply dropped out of school. By the time they finished high school, their education was equivalent to having two years of college.

Those that learn a trade are in this type of program for three years and one day a week were in a classroom type setting. Boys and girls were not together and they did not have any type of school buses. They had to walk or ride a bike. I wonder if that type of education still exists?

a doctorate degree if they taught in the public schools. Remember this was 1954 and requirements might be different now.

Shopping was a bit different also with many beautiful things on the shelves but out of reach for the common shopper. Lola came home with a German Hummel of which we are to get in the mail.

Lola taught in Austria for five weeks and felt humbled to be able to share her knowledge with those who had so little. It was worth her paying her own way for the experience. It was a lovely story about Lola and her teaching in Austria.

My next email was from Scott Barber and we were thrilled to hear from him. That is another story.

Sandstone bluff is the heart of Castle Rock State Park

BY OTTO DICK Castle Rock is located three miles south of Oregon on Illinois Route 2.

In 1921 this area was proposed as a state park by a group of people called the “Friends of Our Native Landscape.” They acquired some land which they described as “a unique wilderness remnant of great natural beauty and scientific interest.”

In 1964, the Natural Lands Institute, a nonprofit natural lands preservation group, conducted a public fund raising campaign to preserve part of the Castle Rock area.

Castle Rock was recognized by the Department of Conservation as an outstanding area of major scientific importance in 1965. A master development plan for the development of Castle Rock by the Department of Conservation was signed in 1980.

Castle Rock was finally designated as a state park on Aug. 29, 1978.

Castle Rock is a large sandstone bluff located between the Rock River and Route 2. This rock is made up of St. Peter Sandstone.

This park offers fishing along the Rock River, a boat ramp, picnic areas and hiking trails to view woodland animals and birds that inhabit the park.

Of course the main attraction is hiking to the top of Castle Rock.

It’s amazing to pass through the rock cliffs when driving Route 2 through the park. I am happy the state preserved these cliffs.

While in high school my classmate Dick Bocker’s father, who worked for the state, would drive to Castle Rock and remove any sandstone rocks that had fallen onto Route 2. On occasion he would allow Dick and myself to ride with him.

No action taken this month; vote expected at May 17 county board meeting

azoellner@shawmedia.com A short discussion during Tuesday’s Ogle County Board meeting regarding creating a human resource manager position revealed proponents for and against the idea.

The proposed job description, which includes an annual salary range of $80,000 to $100,000 with no overtime, was shared with Ogle County Board members April 19, but no vote was taken. A Human Resources Task Force put together the proposal, but task force Chairperson Lou Finch was unable to attend the county board meeting to do a full presentation.

“The task force did a great job, so if you’ve got any questions, ask,” board member John “Skip” Kenney said.

“It’ll go back around and then we’ll deal with it.”

Kenny was not part of the task force.

Ogle County has more than 100 employees – possibly closer to 200 – and there are roughly 14 departments, board member Wayne Reising said. Of those, only five departments have personnel answerable to the county board, he said.

The elected officials who oversee the other departments can do as they see fit, Reising pointed out.

“We’re about to hire somebody for $80,000 to $100,000, but their scope is going to be very limited as to the employees that are in the county,” he said.

Reising also expressed concern about how the position would be funded a few years in the future.

“We’re making a commitment that I don’t see we have a way to support down the line,” he said.

The hope is that hiring a human resources manager would save the county money because it would eliminate the need to pay several thirdparty companies, said board member Bruce Larson, who was part of the HR Task Force. Furthermore, it likely would be a three-year contract, which would offer a set point to reevaluate

the position’s usefulness.

“If, at the end, this doesn’t pan out to save the county money, we probably wouldn’t continue,” Larson said.

County board Chairperson John Finfrock added that, even if a department is headed by an elected official, that doesn’t mean they couldn’t use the knowledge of a human resource manager.

“At least we’re making the resource available to them,” he said.

County board members likely will make a decision regarding the position at their May 17 meeting.

Salary increases Board members approved annual salary increases for fiscal years 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 for three elected positions. The positions of county clerk and recorder, treasurer and

sheriff will receive 2% increases in fiscal years 2023 and 2024 and 1.5% increases in fiscal years 2025 and 2026.

The county clerk and recorder and the treasurer’s salaries will be: $88,733; $90,508; $91,866; and $93,244.

The sheriff’s salary will be: $97,607; $99,509; $101,002; and $102,517.

ARPA fund allocations A total of $73,446.63 of American Rescue Plan Act money was allocated to several projects, including asbestos abatement at a cost not to exceed $20,000.

Planning and Zoning Department: Planning Commission education/ training sessions, $500; Planning Commission annual membership, $50; Advertisement, $342.

IT Department: Software conversion, $12,350; Processors for unified central server, $25,420.

Health Department: Office supplies, $12,500; Global Industrial expandable starter rack, $520.89; Expandable add-on rack, $462.95; Storage cabinet and turn handle, $808.01; Shipping and handling, $492.87.

READING MATTERS

There are many pieces to the comprehension puzzle

U

nderstanding what we read, or comprehending, is the goal of all reading, yet for many readers comprehension is a stumbling block. There are many pieces to the comprehension puzzle. This month we’ll look at activating background knowledge and some ways we can help our children and grandchildren learn about how much it helps them understand what they read.

It is important that all readers know and understand that it is the reader’s job to make meaning every time they read no matter what kind of text is being read. Some explain it as being like a conversation between the author and the reader except that the author’s side of the conversation is only the book or text itself. The rest is up to us as the reader.

The first steps in the process of

READING MATTERS Mary Gardner understanding or comprehending what we read begin before we actually read. Brain research is telling us that our brains seek to make connections between what is already known to new information. An important before-reading step then is to activate our background knowledge about the text.

First, the purpose for reading and the kind of text are important considerations. Sometimes the purpose is for enjoyment, sometimes it’s because we have to read it for school for extra

practice or to research a topic.

Determining the purpose makes a big difference in how we read the text.

I read tax forms or directions for assembling something much differently than I read my favorite novel.

Helping our grandchildren or children determine their purpose for reading and discussing the text type are both worthwhile and helpful pre-reading strategies.

Next we might read the title and any additional information such as the end flaps or the back of the book jacket.

We can easily do this when reading to, or with, our children or grandchildren. Then we can decide if we know a lot about the topic already (my favorite novel) or if we know only a little and we’re going to have to read very carefully (tax forms and directions).

Finally, we might make some pre-

dictions about what we are going to read. Ask your child what they think the book is going to be about. What kind of a story is it? What facts do you think we’ll learn?

This may sound like a lot of steps to take before beginning to read, but none of them take a long time. They can all be done pretty quickly. Good readers do this all the time and they do it automatically.

By talking our children and grandchildren through each of these steps we can help them develop habits that they’ll also be able to use independently and automatically.

Born: August 21, 1964 in Freeport, IL Died: April 1, 2022 in Fredericksburg, VA Joey E. Love, 57, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away on Friday, April 1, 2022 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on August 21, 1964 in Freeport, Illinois.

Joey was a 1983 graduate of Polo Community High School. He then went on to serve in the military from 1983 to 1992. He was stationed in Camp Darby in Italy from 1984 to 1988. Joey then served the 437th Military Police Company, Fort Belvoir, VA from 1988 to 1992. He was deployed to Desert Storm from 1990 to 1991.

Joey was employed by SAIC, Inc. as a Senior Network Engineer from 1996-2007.

He then went to work for Peraton, Inc. as the Infrastructure Engineering Manager from 2007-2021.

Joey enjoyed riding his motorcycle, fishing, playing poker, cooking, and most of all spending time with his dog, Godfrey, and his family and friends. Joey will be remembered as being a kind-hearted and giving man with a great sense of humor, who was always making people laugh.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at Covenant Funeral Service in Fredericksburg. There will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 30th from 5:00 to 7:30 pm at Barnecopia in Polo where donations in honor of Joey can be made to Mary Washington Hospice, Fredericksburg and Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

Three eighth grade students told the Oregon School Board on Monday how they helped organize a dodgeball tournament to raise money for their classmate who is battling cancer.

Cooper Johnson, Aniyah Sarver and Nole Campos gave a brief presentation about their event that raised $1,849.12 for Patrick Newcomer.

“Our goal of this fundraiser was to donate all the proceeds to the Patrick Newcomer family,” the students told the board. “Income came though admission, concessions and a 60/40 raffle. Notable donations was $100 for a bag of chips and two $100 admission tickets.”

The students thanked staff and other students who helped make the February event a success.

“This was a very positive event,” said Dave Boyer, whose home room helped organize the event.

Oregon offense explodes with 10-1 win over Pecatonica

treynolds@shawmedia.com After relying on its defense in the last six games, the Oregon girls soccer team exploded on offense Monday evening, defeating Pecatonica 10-1 in a nonconference game at Oregon Park West.

Hadley Lutz knocked in a penalty kick with 24:15 left in the first half and that seemed to open the floodgates for the Hawks. Anna Stender added a goal just three minutes later, and Sophie Stender added another with 19:45 left in the half for a lightning-fast 3-0 lead.

“I think we moved the ball around a little better, and we saw more openings and got passes to the open players,” Oregon sophomore Kenna Wubbena said. “Everybody really contributed today, and so many people who sometimes don’t even play offense were being able to score goals, make passes, play up top. It was fun.”

It was just the third time this season Oregon (6-2-2) has scored more than two goals in a game; their previous season high had been four, with a pair of 4-0 wins among their first three contests.

Lutz’s goal came after she was taken down in the halfback box. She lined up the PK and ripped it past the Pecatonica goalkeeper and

into the left side of the net.

Anna Stender also booted her shot into the left side of the net, with her goal coming with 21:18 left in the half. Sophie Stender scored after her shot was deflected by a Pec defender right back to her, and she lofted it over the keeper’s head for a 3-0 lead.

Alyssa Mowry found the net for Oregon’s next two goals. She made a run up the right side of the box and converted a pretty pass from Gracie Prose with 13:08 left in the half.

Not even three minutes later, she went up and over the Pec keeper with a shot, again from the right side, this time after receiving a pass from Mya Engelkes, to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead with 10:30 left in the first half.

“It was very nice to see just a wider range of people scoring goals, and see everyone play their best today,” Mowry said. “I don’t think we’ve won by more than five in a while, so it was really nice to get that.

“This is a newer team for us – every year is a new team – but I feel like today we really played together, everyone filled their role, and everyone did great.”

the goal mouth, and Wubbena shot it past the keeper with 2:36 left in the first half.

“Its was nice trying to kind of work on some things today,” Oregon coach Seger Larson said. “We’ve had a hard time scoring as of late. We’ve been playing great games and have a lot of shutouts, but then just getting the ball in front of the goal and kicking it right to the keeper. So not relying one person to run our offense is a good sign.”

Mowry connected with Wubbena three-and-a-half minutes into the second half for a 7-0 lead, booting a pass from the right side toward the left goal post. Wubbena tipped the ball past the Pec keeper for her second score. That cut the time remaining in half.

Oregon started subbing in new players and moving others around, but still kept the pressure on. Sophie Stender’s shot from the right side went into the goal with 13:49 left when the Pec fullback slid at it to try to knock it away, then Mowry’s centered pass was knocked in by Pec for a second own goal with 12:44 to play.

Anna Stender closed out the scoring for the Hawks when she knocked in a loose rebound in front of the goal with 7:45 remaining.

Teagan Champley’s shot hit the crossbar and bounced back to Stender, who scooted a shot past a fullback and Pec’s keeper.

“For sure, keeping the possession was key, just keeping the ball on the other side of the field, not really letting it get down on our side,” Wubbena said. “Not having to play a lot of defense means we’ve got more chances to score.”

Pecatonica scored with 4:18 to play to avoid the shutout.

Oregon opened the season with three wins and a tie in its first four games, then went 1-2 in a span of three days between April 9-12, including an overtime shootout loss to Winnebago. But the Hawks came into Monday’s game fresh off the Harvard Tournament title on Saturday, and did not let that emotional high affect them against Pec. “We were really happy about winning the Harvard tournament, but I think we did a great job coming out today and focusing,” Mowry said. “It was a good game.”

Rochelle took third (82.95), and Erie-Prophetstown finished fourth (74.97). Oregon placed eighth (31.96).

Daniel Dominguez led Oregon with a runner-up finish in the discus (41.28 meters) and a fifth in the shot put (14.40), and Kenrick Oriyavong finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (47.17 seconds). The Hawks placed fourth in the 4x110 shuttle hurdle (1:29.60) with the team of Hunter Bartel, Noah Johnson, Oriyavong and Lucas Cole, and fifth in the 4x200 (1:42.41) with the quartet of Trevor Burkhardt, Bartel, Huston Arterbrun and Trystyn Smith.

Dylan Greenfield earned the win on the mound, throwing six strikeouts over three innings, and allowing three hits, one run and two walks.

Byron 6, Forreston 1: The Tigers scored three runs in the fourth inning on their way to a five-inning nonconference victory over the Cardinals.

Owen Greenfield went 1 for 2, scoring Forreston’s lone run. Tommy Appel, Dylan Greenfield and Logan Dyson added one hit each for the Cardinals.

Owen Greenfield took the loss, throwing 3 1/3 innings. During his time on the mound, he had four strikeouts and allowed six hits, five runs and one walk.

Jackson Werren went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Issac Reber went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Oregon at the plate. Werren pitched five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks, while tallying seven strikeouts.

Forreston 7, Amboy 7: The Tuesday game was suspended after seven innings and was schedule to be finished on April 21.

Softball Forreston 8, Winnebago 3: The Cardinals got rolling with a four-run first inning and

never looked back, claiming a nonconference win over the Indians.

Leading hitters for Forreston were Brooke Boettner, who went 3 for 4 with a triple, a double and two RBIs; Kara Erdmann and Alaina Miller, who each went 3 for 4; and Rylee Broshous, who went 1 for 4 with three RBIs. Jenna Greenfield and Ella Ingram added one RBI each for the Cardinals, and Greenfield had two hits.

Miller went five innings in the circle for Forreston, allowing seven hits, three runs and zero walks, while tallying two strikeouts.

Aubrey Sanders pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the Cardinals, allowing one hit and zero walks, while striking out two.

IHSA reviewing shot clock for high school basketball games

W

asn’t sure what to write about this week, so I decided to comment on the most recent IHSA board meeting discussion items.

• Though the board approved a 1-32 seeding in football, they are having second thoughts due to extreme travel scenarios. Some constituents have expressed concerns that a financial hardship may be incurred for lengthy travel and the IHSA may revert back to a North/South 1-16 set up.

My take on the matter is a) A decision had been made and needs to be adhered to, or why else make such a decision b) Football is different than other sports in that it is only played once a week, instead of multiple games weekly in the postseason c) For the joy and excitement fans get watching a playoff football, you can’t put a price tag on the experience d) The tournament is watered down by not having a true 1-32 seeding statewide.

• The board is reviewing whether to have a shot clock in basketball. The national high school organization has given the green light to any state that wants to adopt a 35-second clock.

My take is that with today’s tech-

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert nology, it should be fairly simple to facilitate and not too cost prohibitive, though it may require extra staffing to operate. And it will eliminate stalling and create a more fast-paced game.

It will probably hurt less-skilled teams and lead to bigger blowouts.

Like the 3-point shot, which was under similar scrutiny before being adopted, once there is a shot clock, no one will seem to care either way.

• The board received a letter regarding schools using Native American mascots and will consider a policy regarding such.

My gut feeling is to allow schools to have whatever mascot they want, but I also realize much of our thinking is tainted by prejudices. So my take is one of neutrality.

• The board heard a report on a book study initiative being led by the NFHS’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee that IHSA staff and board members will take part in.

My take is stay out of this argument

and mind my own business.

• The board discussed IHSA Competitive Cheerleading and the threshold of male competitors required to compete in the IHSA’s Coed division.

My take is that cheerleading sure has gotten a lot more complex than when I was in high school. I decided to read up on what’s been going on and got even more confused. Terms such as rubric range, scripting, synchronizing and routine composition were too much to comprehend, let alone the detailed scoring criteria used.

One positive to the question of male cheerleaders is at least we have them now. In my days, it was considered effeminate (those prejudicial thoughts again) to be a cheerleader and guys who may have wanted try it were afraid of being ostracized • The board discussed collegiate NIL rules and plans to study the issue and its impact on high school students in Illinois in the near future. It allows college recruits to benefit from their name, image and likeness (NIL).

My take is that NIL will have very serious ramifications. Instead of just receiving tuition, free meals and whatever else a scholarship provides, for the first time in 115 years of college sports, recruits can receive untapped amounts of cash from the use of their

name in a sponsorship or branding of a product, for example.

It’s a real Wild West in how it is being monitored and the effect on recruiting. The argument is that colleges reap financial benefits from the student athletes, so why not let those athletes have a piece of the pie.

I would tend to disagree. The colleges themselves are the vehicles for the athletes, not the other way around.

Besides, it isn’t healthy for kids to be unduly rewarded with huge cash windfalls, though the argument can be made that their coaches sure are making the big bucks.

NIL is focused mainly on football and basketball, potentially turning both from amateur to professional affairs, with the richest donors buying the best athletes.

Of course, college athletics have been somewhat of a sham in how they operate for many decades anyway.

Maybe NIL will serve a purpose by having everything out in the open now instead of backroom deals and shenanigans.

Shining Star calls on local reps to help raise funds

azoellner@shawmedia.com Shining Star Children’s Advocacy Center’s “Jail and Bail” fundraiser is underway.

Shining Star “served” more than 45 local representatives, including a few law enforcement officers, with the goal of raising $500 by April 29. If they don’t, they’ll go to “jail.”

The donations – which are tax deductible – will support services Shining Star provides to child abuse victims and their non-offending family. The

mission of Shining Star is to “transform victims of child abuse into survivors,” according to the organization’s website.

“They help with everything from some custody issues to counseling to sex assault interviews,” Forreston Police Chief Chris Thiel said. “They have forensic interviews where we take the kids in there and we do child abuse and sex cases and all that other stuff.”

Thiel, along with Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle, was “served.”

“You know, unfortunately, the sheriff’s office

uses Shining Star way too much,” VanVickle said.

“We’re down there every week multiple times for interviews with children.

“It’s an invaluable resource we have, being able to bring some closure to those families and start the healing process, and Shining Star’s part of that process,” he added. “Being able to raise money for them and help them continue to do the great job that they do is … a worthwhile cause and something that we fully support.”

Lincoln impersonator pleads guilty to two charges

Nationally known Abraham Lincoln impersonator George Buss of Freeport, who portrayed Honest Abe for more than three decades at events in the area and nationwide, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography video and patronizing a prostitute.

Buss, 64, who was charged Aug. 28, 2020, faces 3 to 7 years in prison on the most serious charge, possession, at his sentencing June 1 in Stephenson County Court.

He has been free since posting $20,000 of his $200,000 bond in September 2020, and pleaded guilty Thursday.

Tyler Dotson, 24, of Leaf River, who also was arrested in the investigation, is serving 6 years in prison after pleading guilty Sept.

29, 2020, to one count of disseminating child pornography video, George A. Buss and misdemeanor prostitution.

He also pleaded guilty in another 2020 case that same day to one count of reproducing or selling child

pornography and three counts of nonconsensual dissemination of a sexual image. He was sentenced to 4 years and 3 years, consecutive to the sentence in the first case.

Dotson also must register as a sexual predator.

Buss performed as Lincoln for 34 years across the country, including yearly at the reading of Tyler Dotson the Gettysburg Address at Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania and once before at the National Archives.

Polo man, 18, charged with disseminating child pornography

An 18-year-old Polo man is facing up to 30 years in prison after being charged with eight counts of disseminating child pornography.

Clayton A. Davis pleaded not guilty in Ogle County Court to four counts of reproducing child pornography, each of which carries 6 to 30 years in prison, of which 85% must be served; and four counts of possession of child pornography, punishable by 3 to 7 years.

If convicted, by statute, each sentence must run consecutively, and he would be required to register as a sex offender.

According to court documents, Davis, who was charged March 9, used the Signal app on his phone to possess and share videos and photos of a child he knew or should have known was younger than 13

and who was engaged in sexual activity.

He is free after posting $30,000 of his $300,000 bond, and according to the terms of his pretrial supervision, cannot have any contact with anyone younger than 18, including via social media, or use or maintain any social media sites, among other restrictions.

Clayton A. Davis He appeared in court April 8 with his attorney, Cristina M. Buskohl, of Sterling.

Buskohl asked Judge John B. Roe to modify his bond conditions to allow his 15-year-old sister to return to the family home.

Roe granted that request on April 12.

Buskohl also asked Roe to allow Davis to return to Polo High School to complete his senior year and be allowed to graduate. Assistant State’s Attorney Mat-

thew Leisten said school officials were not in favor of him returning.

Buskohl has issued a subpoena for Polo Superintendent Kelley Mandrell requiring her to appear in court on April 25 at 11 a.m. to testify as to why Davis is not being allowed to return to school.

The subpoena also asks Mandrell to provide any “documents, records, communications of any kind including but not limited to emails, text messages, social media messages, notes summarizing telephone conversations” and any other records that relate to any communications with any representative of the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office.

It also asks for any records or documents “confirming any disciplinary action, including but not limited to expulsion” taken against Davis by the school district and “purported” to affect his ability to return to school.

After an investigation, Pierce was arrested on charges of: possession with intent to deliver cocaine (166 grams), possession of controlled substance — cocaine, possession of cannabis (38 grams), possession of drug paraphernalia and driving while license suspended. Pierce was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Pierce also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and inoperable taillight.

April 15 Makenzee A-A. Scofield, 18, of Machesney Park, was arrested for battery after deputies responded to the 200 block of Main Street in Holcomb in reference to a disturbance at approximately 9:20 p.m. Scofield was

transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Isabella R. Mclester, 23, of Rockford, was arrested at 10:44 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop in the 4000 block of Illinois Route 2. Mclester also was cited for speeding (35-plus mph over the posted speed limit). Mclester was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

April 16 Ian Lundstrom, 26, of Leaf River, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies located a vehicle parked and running in the roadway while in the 10000 block of North Conger Road at approximately 5 a.m. Lundstrom also was cited for improper parking on the roadway.

Lundstrom was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Rufino Reyes Flores, 35, of DeKalb, was arrested at 5:51 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 19000 block of Illinois Route 64 for a speeding violation.

Reyes Flores also was cited for speeding.

Reyes Flores was released from the scene on a signature I-Bond.

Jose F. Becerra-Gonzalez, 44, of Oakland, California, was arrested at 10:48 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol and improper container of cannabis/driver after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 102. Becerra-Gonzalez also was cited for open container/alcohol, expired registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Becerra-Gonzalez was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

April 18 Daniel Hess, 37, of Gilbert, Arizona, was arrested for driving while license revoked after being stopped for speeding on Interstate 39 near Monroe Center. Hess was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

James Wetzell, 48, of Savanna, was arrested at approximately 12:16 a.m. after a traffic stop on Canada Road near the

intersection with Freeport Road. Wetzell was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance (cocaine), driving while license revoked, an outstanding Ogle County warrant and two outstanding Carroll County warrants. Wetzell also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, driving left of center, loud exhaust and unlawful use of registration.

Wetzell was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held pending an appearance before a judge. Wetzell also is the suspect in at least six burglaries throughout Ogle County; those charges are pending.

At approximately 10:30 a.m., deputies responded to the 18000 block of Illinois Route 64 for a one-vehicle rollover crash. An investigation showed a Subaru Outback driven by Richard A. Hoyt, 77, of Rochelle, drove off the roadway and struck a culvert.

The vehicle then rolled onto the driver’s side because of the steep ditch embankment at that location. Hoyt was transported to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford for injuries.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville reports the following police activity.

April 4 Curtis T. U. Akins, 19, Forreston, was issued a citation at 4:27 a.m. for disobeying a red light. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

April 5 At 3:19 p.m., police responded to a disturbance in the 100 block of Jefferson Street resulting in the arrest of an 11-year-old male juvenile of Oregon for domestic battery and attempting to disarm a police officer, a class 2 felony. The juvenile was taken into custody and transported to the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center to await an appearance for these charges.

April 6 At 1:40 p.m., the Oregon School Resource Officer issued a city citation to one male juvenile, 16, of Oregon, for violating Ordinance 6-84, possession of tobacco products and alternative nicotine products.

This violation occurred at the Oregon High School, 210 S. 10th Street.

April 8 Michael D. Ramsey, 30, of Oregon, was arrested at 6:43 p.m. on an outstanding Lee County warrant for theft. Ramsey was transported to the Ogle County jail.

April 9 Nicholas A. Parker, 42, of Rock Falls, was arrested at 12:25 a.m. for aggravated driving under the influence of drugs, aggravated driving while license revoked, and posses-

sion of methamphetamine.

Larry J. Brown, 46, of Oregon, was arrested at 10:28 a.m. on an outstanding Henry County warrant for failure to appear on a driving while revoked charge. Brown was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

April 10 Thor O. Bishop, 23, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was arrested at 2:25 a.m. for driving while license suspended. Bishop was transported to the Ogler County Jail. This violation occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington Street.

Gannon R. Zuniga, 18, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 7:06 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 600 block of S. 2nd Street.

Rebecca L. Davis, 27, of Kingston, was issued citations at 12:34 p.m. for operating a vehicle with an expired registration and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

April 11 At 9:09 a.m., police were notified of a crash that had occurred on Friday, April 8 at 9:30 p.m. where the mailboxes for the Mobil station and the Riverside Liquor Store, located at 108 E. Washington Street, were struck by a 2018 GMC driven by Shawn K. Reynolds, 47, of Oregon. Reynolds was issued citations for improper lane usage and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Chelsey L. Simpson, 29, of Byron, was issued a citation at 1:13 p.m. for operating a vehicle in violation of the tinted front side windows law. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

April 12 Eneolia Landa, 32, of Darlington, Wis., was arrested at 6:27 p.m. for no driver’s license.

Landa was also issued a citation for operating a vehicle with a suspended registration. Landa was transported to the Ogle County jail. These violations occurred in the 700 block of N. 4th Street.

ambulance call that turned into a disturbance call in the 700 block of S. 7th Street resulting in the arrest of Joshua R. Shank, 36, of Polo, for domestic battery. Shank was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

April 14 At 11:00 a.m., the Oregon SRO officer issued a city citation to one male juvenile, 15, of Oregon, for violating Ordinance 6-84, possession of tobacco products and alternative nicotine products. This violation occurred at the Oregon High School, 210 S. 10th Street.

April 15 Chance A. Proper, 23, of Dixon, for 3:34 p.m. for possession of cannabis 10 to 100 grams, and improper container as a driver.

Proper was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 7:53 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the municipal parking lot located in the 100 block of N. 5th Street involving a 2007 Chevrolet driven by Clayton H. Metheny, 22, of Mt. Morris, that struck a parked 2015 Dodge owned by Gonzalo Nava-Chapuleno, 50, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

April 17 Angel D. Esquivel, 21, of Savanna, was arrested at 6 p.m. for no valid driver’s license. Esquivel was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington Street.
