Two charged with theft, burglary in break-in

azoellner@shawmedia.com Two people were arrested and charged with residential burglary and theft in relation to an incident at the Mt. Morris Estates Mobile Home Park.

On March 3, Ogle County deputies arrested Nancylee Limond, 36, and Kenneth R. Adams, 61, both of Mt. Morris, according to a sheriff’s report. The initial report came in on March 2, Sheriff Brian VanVickle said.

“The report [of a residential burglary]

was after the fact,” he said. “It wasn’t a burglary in progress. The rest was the result of an investigative follow up.

“They were charged and transported to the jail,” VanVickle added. “So they appeared before a judge.”

Limond and Adams both are charged with residential burglary, a Class 1 felony, and theft between $500 and $10,000, a Class 3 felony, according to Judici.

Theft is intentionally depriving someone of their property, while burglary is entering a residence without permission, VanVickle said. A person could be charged with bur-

glary for illegally entering a residence, even if they don’t take anything, he said.

VanVickle said the stolen property was household items and that the items were recovered.

He declined to comment on Limond and Adams’ connection to the mobile home park.

Limond was given a $5,000/10% bond and Adams a $25,000/10% bond, VanVickle said.

Both posted bond on March 4 after appearing before a judge, he said.

Preliminary hearing statuses for Limond and Adams were set for March 9 at 10 a.m.

every level of the home and outside all sleeping areas. For added safety, install smoke alarms in every room where people sleep.

• To increase safety, have a qualified electrician install hard-wired, interconnected smoke alarms so that when one sounds, they all sound.

• Install a new battery in all smoke and CO alarms at least twice a year. Install a new battery immediately if an alarm “chirps” to indicate a low battery.

• Replace smoke alarms that use extended-life, lithium batteries when the alarm “chirps” or fails to respond to periodic testing. Many of these batteries are good for 10 years, but it is still a great time to check their operation. The batteries in these units cannot be replaced.

• Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old. The mechanism that senses smoke and activates the alarm looses sensitivity over time.

• Replace all CO alarms when they are 7 years old. The manufacture date is listed on the bottom of the detectors.

• Test alarms every month. Use the test button, or an approved smoke substitute, and clean the units, according to manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use an open-flame device to test the alarm.

• Special smoke alarms are made for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

These alarms use strobe lights. Vibrating devices may also help in some cases.

The district has over the past recent years spent considerable major funds to heating upgrades, major electrical upgrades, gym ceiling and LED lighting, total locker replacement to name a few.

Please understand ALL of these upgrades and projects are and should be LONG TERM major investments to any building, not things you do if you were planing to dispose of a building in the next 5 to 10 years.

So if they dispose of the building it will be a gross waste of taxpayers money in the end. The pros and cons of mixing the middle school students into the high school environment can be a double-sided sword but after listening to all the many arguments from many people it seems to me that it is a bad choice. Time will tell.

The citizens advisory board was made of well chosen educated and professional people that several times proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that closing DLR will be totally the wrong decision made by the board.

Two of the board members, both highly educated individuals, from the beginning voted correctly to save the building and both had prepared statements backing their decisions.

They both made complete logical and financial sense and yet the rest of the board members turned a def ear and ignored their peers recommendations. How could that be?

Decisions are usually and rightfully to be made from truthful facts and information, yet it appears that ALL logic was thrown out the window and ignored both times they voted on this critical issue.

So I wonder about the credibility of all board members that supported the vote to close the DLR for the second time last night.

The board could have become true heroes last night if they had said look, because of the volume of real data that we weren’t aware of, we will keep DLR as a feasible part of the overall district property, but they chose not to do the right thing.

Many thanks to the advisory committee for their hard work, shame on Mahoney and the board members that made an illogical vote. They should resign, and thanks to the two board members that did vote based on true facts and data!

To the Editor, I’m so at a loss to understand true reality of this poor decision made last night (Feb. 22) on the part of four board members.

What is the driving force behind the scenes to make totally illogical decisions considering the overwhelming factual information that the advisory board has dug up proving beyond all doubt that Mahoney’s reasons and financial numbers were in total error on the financial ground of the school district.

The huge report, which was published after months of digging into the schools financial records, real estate tax data from the county courthouse, is very factual and can’t be disputed.

So the original reason for closing was proved to be totally false and also proved that the district is in a very good financial position and should remain so well into the future.

It was also found that the building in Mt. Morris is in much much better shape than portrayed by Mahoney and the district has the money to have done the needed repairs.

Granddaughter of Ukrainian immigrant takes part in event

ehinton@oglecountynews.com Natalie Andrews of Grand Detour held a small bouquet of sunflowers and a candle Saturday night as she joined 74 others for a prayer vigil for the people of Ukraine.

But for Andrews, the recent Russian invasion has hit a bit closer to her heart.

“My grandfather escaped Stalin and when he arrived at Ellis Island he met my grandmother,” she said as a light rain fell on the small crowd gathered on the Ogle County Courthouse Square in downtown Oregon on Saturday night. “He was a tailor and he ended up having 10 children. My father was one of his children and my dad was the only one who left Brooklyn. But we always held the traditions

Students working again with health care professionals Oregon High School students will again be working hands-on with health care professionals in collaboration with the University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford through the Rural Healthcare Explorers Program.

The program started last year and has now expanded to allow a total of 28 students.

The Rural Healthcare Explorers

Program is made possible by a $17,103 grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois’ Dr. Louis and Violet Rubin Fund.

This program is a six-week introduction to the field of health care and prepares students wishing to pursue a degree in the health sciences.

Students learn about fields such as medicine, pharmacy and nursing

through hands-on activities, discussions with local health care professionals,and a health topic exploration project.

Students at OHS received a link from the Dean of Students, Shannon Cremeens, to apply. The program will begin in April. “I enjoyed being part of the program last year because it helped me learn more about the medical field

in rural areas,” said Allyssa Leary, an OHS sophomore. “I learned the importance of having health care professionals work locally. “ I also appreciated having various guests come in and talk to us about their jobs in medicine and the pros and cons. It was a very eye-opening experience, and I am thrilled to get the opportunity to join the program again!”

City council tables decision on video gaming increase

azollener@shawmedia.com Oregon City Council members again put off deciding whether to raise the annual video gaming terminal fee.

At their March 8 meeting, commissioners unanimously voted to table the matter until May 24. The annual fee is charged on June 1, City Administrator Darin DeHaan said.

“It gives us time to go back and look at pre-COVID and COVID revenue [from the gaming terminals] and see how much of an impact that made,” Finance Commissioner Terry Schuster said.

The matter originally was considered at the council’s Feb. 23 meeting,

but council members postponed making a decision after hearing protests from local business owners who rent video gaming terminals.

At the March 8 meeting, Mayor Ken Williams proposed tabling the matter for a year to give businesses a chance to use profits from the terminals to assist in recovering revenue lost from COVID-19 impacts.

“We could wait a year without any harm to the city and then when we do it, we do it as a tiered basis,” Williams suggested.

According to the Illinois Gaming Board’s video gaming monthly revenue reports, Oregon made $173,685.95 from video gaming terminal taxes and fees in 2021.

In a separate interview, DeHaan said $40,000 of that money goes into the city’s General Fund to support general operational expenses, $50,000 goes into the City Hall Capital Improvement Fund to help pay for the upkeep of the building and the remainder is allocated to the Economic Development Fund. “[The Economic Development Fund supports] things that spur economic growth, like downtown flowers, landscaping and watering, to our contract with an economic development consultant, website design and maintenance, brochures, newsletters, some facade grants, etc.,” DaHaan said. “We also used it to help get the farmers market started last year.”

Andrews held the sunflowers – the national flower for Ukraine – as she joined others to pray and listen to songs during the hourlong vigil organized by three Oregon residents Lisa Schul tz, Gary Schrimp sher and Veronica Mathews.

Schrimpsher, the founder of the What’s Up Ogle County? Facebook page, said Saturday’s event was meant as a show of support for the people of Ukraine.

“We just thought it would be real nice if they could be able to see that Americans supported them,” he said.

Mathews said about 75 candles were handed out for the event. “We did get a good turnout. I think it went really well. I am really happy for everybody who came out. I really do think that God or the universe will hear our prayers and hopefully Russia will stop and Ukraine will be victorious.”

“Right now they need our prayers and support,” Schultz said.

Schrimpsher said by buying Russian oil, the U.S. was actually “financing their war.”

Rosemarie and Jim Farmer of Oregon also attended the vigil. “I think this was good to gather people together and show we are all united,” said Rosemarie.

“I’m a Vietnam veteran and I know what war is like,” Jim said. “It’s unnecessary. We need tougher sanctions [on Russia]. I’m willing to bite the bullet as far as gas goes to help them [Ukranians] out.”

Andrews, a retired social worker, traveled to Ukraine in 2005 to explore more of her heritage. “I had the opportunity to teach a class on social issues for 18- to 20-year-olds. They wanted to know how they could have independence like we have here in the United States and I told them they had to speak up to change the world,” she said. “We have privileges here in the U.S. I pray for humanity to win out.”

Fessler was instrumental in landing ‘Iron Mike’ T

he May 22, 1901, newspaper reported: “The new drinking fountain for man and beast purchased for the city by the Humane Society has arrived. It will be set up on Washington Street.”

Laura Fessler was responsible for securing the iron drinking fountains in Rochelle and Oregon.

She loved animals and organized the Ogle County Humane Society in the Ogle County Courthouse on July 13, 1899. The Fesslers lived at 104 S. Third St. in Oregon and later in Rochelle.

Laura devoted much of her life to actively being involved in civic affairs and many humane causes.

Organizations she belonged to were the Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star, Women’s Club, Shakespeare group, Rochelle Civic Council and a member of the State Board of Charities from Ogle County.

She helped the soldiers at Camp Grant during World War I, spending all her time providing recreation and relief to the boys.

She also assisted in the emergency hospital during the influenza epidemic.

She was involved in several other activities. She proposed legislation so school children could vote for the state flower, tree and animal.

She organized the Red Star Society for children, a humane society for animals.

She was a delegate to the National Women Suffrage Association in Washington, D.C. She proposed changing the name from County Poor Farm to County

Home, and finally won a prize in 1914 for an essay “What Effect will Women’s Suffrage Have on the Human Condition?”

She was born on Dec. 15, 1853, in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Her family moved to White Rock Township on March 13, 1879.

She was educated in the Rochelle school system, and in 1879 Laura married James Fessler. James served several terms as County Clerk in the late 1880s.

She died in March of 1920 and is

buried in White Rock Cemetery.

The Oregon fountain was obtained first. Several years later, in 1915, the Rochelle fountain, now located in front of the Flagg Township Historical Society Museum, was installed.

Today, the city and county worked together to find a safer spot for Iron Mike on the Courthouse lawn.

Mayor Ken Williams planned to incorporate the fountain as a focal point of a seating area.

With Mike Bowers in charge, he and several others did a wonderful job

of making this a focal point so people traveling Illinois Route 2 and Illinois Route 64 would enjoy seeing the fountain.

This is also a wonderful place to sit viewing the fountain and watch the traffic go by.

I remember Dr. Orr, an Oregon dentist, saying this must be the busiest intersection in Ogle County.

• Otto Dick is a retired teacher and has researched Ogle County history for several years.

The Rock River Center in Oregon was the classroom for the “Judge of Election School” held last week in Oregon.

The school offered participants an extensive review of the new election equipment and election day procedures, Ogle County Clerk Laura Cook said.

The training included hands-on

instructions that focused on election procedures and how the new voting equipment will work.

Illinois State Statute requires Judges of Election to attend training.

Election judges work from 5 a.m. until after the polls close at 7 p.m. on Election Day. Judges receive a salary of $100 per election and an extra $20 if they attend a school.

The gym at Polo High School was filled with dealer tables. This 1952 Farmall H tractor was restored by Polo FFA members and was raffled off at the toy show. The tractor was donated to the FFA three years ago.

Crowd returns to Polo Lions Club toy show in 2022 The Polo Lions Club held its 37th annual toy show March 5 with some help from Polo FFA members.

“There were about 379 people that walked through. There was 28 dealers in the Polo High School. People were

very satisfied with everything,” said Jeff Short, a Lions Club member.

“Thank you to all the volunteers that helped set up and take down everything. Thank you to the FFA kids that helped set up, take down and served

the lunch at the show.”

The FFA also raffled off the 1952 Farmall H tractor that students restored. The winner was Matt Blume.

The tractor was completely restored by some of the ag students at Polo High

School.

The students completely rebuilt the engine, did the body work, primed, and painted the H, all in the high school shop. It also has brand-new tires thanks to Titan Tires.

READING MATTERS

Reading, writing essential for succeeding in today’s world

Y

ou have likely seen or heard the acronym STEM in the news, heard about it at school, or attended various STEM activities.

For this month, we will look at what it stands for, how it relates to literacy, and what it means for us as parents and grandparents.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

It has received much attention as these disciplines are necessary for preparing our students for 21st century jobs. There is also emphasis on making sure that girls are interested in these areas as well as boys.

There are STEM elementary schools whose focus for instruction is specifically in these areas.

At times you’ll also see the acronym STEAM which adds the Arts to the above list. It is important that we provide opportunities for our children in all areas.

We want them to know and understand all aspects of the world around

READING MATTERS Mary Gardner them, and that world is full of science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.

One thing that ties STEM and STEAM to literacy is the idea that we want our children to be literate in all of these areas.

That broadens our definition of what it means to be literate. Traditionally it referred to a person who could read and write.

Today the definition really expands to include the skills and knowledge in many fields.

Being literate in these areas as well as in reading and writing is essential for succeeding in today’s world.

The thinking processes involved in

STEM and STEAM also connect directly to literacy. Consider these steps in an engineering design process: Identify the problem, research and brainstorm, build, test, then either present solutions, or improve and start the cycle again. STEM and STEAM activities promote deeper thinking, problem-solving, and persevering through difficulties.

These activities also involve discussions about failure and what we do when something doesn’t work the first time. These are all vital skills that good readers and writers need as well.

How can we support the ideas and

We can look for books that link to the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts and math.

We can support and encourage them if they try something and it does not work the first time. We can help them discover things such as which objects will sink and which will float.

We can help them learn from the wonder of the garden by having them join us in all phases of caring for vegetables and flowers.

We can let them build things without directions. We can let them play!

No horses were injured in March 5 storm; GoFundMe page established

ehinton@oglecountynews.com Strong winds significantly damaged the main arena building at Pegasus Special Riders on Saturday night leaving officials of the therapeutic riding center unsure of their next move.

“We’re assuming we’ll have to have some type of fundraiser, depending on the insurance,” said Sara Morris, administrator for the nonprofit organization on Sunday. “We just don’t know yet. The building is 20 years old.”

Dave Diveley, property manager, said he learned of the damage when board president and founder Donna Fellows saw the damage via remote cameras located at the facility on Carthage Road, southeast of Oregon.

When he arrived at the center he saw the devastation. “The south end of the building took the brunt of it,” he said. “All the horses were OK, but they were jumpy from the storm.”

The 11 horses were housed under the wooden hay mow at the south end of the 62 x 420 building when the storm hit.

The horses and two cats that also reside in the structure were not hurt.

The wind pushed the north end of the building in, twisting and bending the frame and crumpling a large garage door.

Morris said the “hoop building” was constructed in 2002. Its roof and sides consist of a large tarp called a

Morris was busy on Sunday making calls to companies who might be able to repair the damage.

“The steel frame is twisted so a lot of the cost may be replacing the frame, but we don’t know yet,” she said. “And it is Sunday so a lot of places weren’t open.”

“Our volunteers were great and we moved two full hay racks of bales,” he said. “Now we have to submit a claim to our insurance agency and then see who can repair the damage.”

“Every donation counts and will be deeply appreciated. Donations will be used to get our arena fixed as quickly as possible so that therapeutic riding lessons can begin next month,” the GoFundMe site said.

About Pegasus Pegasus Special Riders is a nonprofit organization providing therapeutic horseback riding to Northern Illinois residents with physical, mental and emotional challenges.

The organization is staffed by 50 volunteers who are involved with all aspects of the program from horse care, horse handling during lessons and barn chores to fund raising and special events.

Pegasus is a member of the PATH International, which sets the standards for a safe and therapeutic riding experience, as well as the education of certified riding instructors.

Feel-good story continues with Scales Mound in 1A tourney

T

he feel-good story of the winter continued on Monday with tiny Scales Mound advancing to the state finals. In an anticlimactic supersectional, the rural kids from Jo Daviess County had their way with Chicago Marshall, a former 3A state champ in 2008.

Truth be told, Scales Mound had tougher foes in its previous three games against East Dubuque, Pecatonica and Sterling Newman. With a declining enrollment, Marshall (7-15) is a shell of its former self.

Marshall only has two seniors left out of six that started the year, besides the rash of other kids coming and going.

That lack of continuity by Marshall led to their demise against a program where Hornet players might know each other as well as they know their family.

Speaking of families, imagine the joy shared by the parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts and uncles as they make the magical trip to Champaign for the IHSA basketball championships. This isn’t supposed to happen for towns of 454.

You better believe the IHSA is breathing a sigh of relief that SM beat Chicago Marshall. Not only will there be a 100-1 fan ratio comparing SM to Marshall in State Farm Center (former Assembly Hall), but the IHSA needs the Scales Mound story to boost the fortunes of this beleaguered event.

Attendance at the boys basketball state finals have declined substantially over the years. Administrators

at the IHSA have been brainstorming ideas, such as having all four classes on the same weekend, to bring March Madness back to its former glory.

Having the Hebronesque aspect with SM at Champaign will garner interest statewide. Also adding luster will be one the better teams in the country in 4A Glenbard West. It was neat having both SM and GW play at DeKalb in a 1A/4A doubleheader.

However, the atmosphere at the Convocation Center on the NIU campus paled in comparison to the sectional at Pecatonica. If this would have been contested at NIU’s old Chick

March 1 Lucero Montalvo, 30, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 near mile marker 110 at approximately 12:05 a.m.

Montalvo also was cited for operating an uninsured vehicle and no registration light.

She was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Nicholas Parsons, 20, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for unlawful possession of cannabis/improper container after a traffic stop at approximately 9:17 p.m. near the intersection of Illinois Route 64 and South White Rock Road. Parsons also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and loud exhaust. Parsons was released on an I-Bond and future court date.

March 3 Nancylee Limond and Kenny Adams were arrested for residential burglary and theft, more than $300, after deputies investigated a report of a burglary in the Mt. Morris Estates Trailer Park. Limond and Adams were taken into custody, transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Christina N. Dodd, 26, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was arrested for no valid driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 400 block of South White Rock Road at approximately 7:13 p.m. She also was cited for improper turn signal. Dodd was taken into custody without incident, transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

March 4 Keith Ford, 33, of DeKalb, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 near mile marker 106 at approximately 7:06 p.m. Ford also was cited for improper lane use and an equipment violation. Ford was given an I-Bond and a return court date.

Hector Hernandez, 53, of Loves Park, was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop in the 15000 block of East Creston Road at approximately 8:23 p.m.

Hernandez also was cited for failure to signal and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Hernandez was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Joel Jackson Jr., 23, of Rockford, was

arrested for no valid driver’s license and unlawful possession of cannabis/improper container after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 near mile marker 111 at approximately 8:36 p.m. Jackson also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lighting and illegal window tint. A passenger in the vehicle, Vandalle Reed, 22, of Rockford, was cited for no seat belt. Jackson and Reed were released at the scene.

Christal Modeliste, 23, of Rockford, was arrested for driving on a suspended driver’s license after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 104 for an equipment violation at 10:46 p.m.

Modeliste also was cited for no registration light. Modeliste was released on a signature I-Bond with a return court date.

March 5 Bryce W. Hatfield, 19, of Belvidere, was arrested for aggravated fleeing to elude a police officer and speeding 97 mph in a 55 mph zone. At 2:24 a.m., deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 9000 block of Illinois Route 72 for a moving violation. Hatfield did not stop and deputies pursued, eventually

stopping the vehicle. Hatfield also was cited for failure to signal, disregard a stop sign and improper lane use. Hatfield was transported to the Ogle County Jail pending an appearance before a judge.

Bruce Prosser, 51, of Rochelle, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and obstructing a peace officer after deputies responded to a vehicle in the ditch in the 1800 block of South Freeport Road at approximately 3:32 p.m. Prosser’s Chevrolet 2500 was towed by Dyer’s Towing. Prosser was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

March 6 Dawn M. Stonecipher, 42, of Byron, was arrested for no driver’s license after a traffic stop in the 10000 block of Illinois Route 72 at approximately 1:49 p.m. Stonecipher was given an I-Bond and return court date.

Robyn Pierson, 32, of Oregon, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop on Interstate 39 mile marker 111 at approximately 9:53 p.m. Pierson also was cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and obstructed driver’s view. Pierson was given an I-Bond and return court date and released on scene.

OBITUARIES ARCHIE C. THOMPSON Born: February 7, 1931 Died: March 4, 2022

OREGON, IL – Archie C. Thompson, age 91, left this earthly life on Friday, March 4, 2022 in his home with his wife and daughter by his side.

Arch was born on February 7, 1931 in Elk City, OK, the son of Samuel Lloyd & Eda Lois (Ross) Thompson. After spending his first few years in Western Oklahoma during the “Dust Bowl,” his family moved to Eastern Oklahoma, where he lived until high school graduation. He then joined the Air Force where he learned aviation mechanics, specializing in the new field of jet engines.

This led to a dream career of being a flight engineer for American Airlines for 35 years.

After the Air Force, Arch returned home to Tahlequah, OK where he met the love of his life, Anne Cole, and they were married within six months. Together, they had three

wonderful children, and lived in Kansas City, MO, Dallas TX suburbs, Chicago, IL suburbs, Buffalo, NY, Lake Whitney, TX, and northern Illinois.

In July 2001, during his wife’s surgery, Arch was introduced to Jesus, where he said he went through a conversion and experienced the greatest day of his life. Ever since that day he has served God and his church.

Arch is survived by his loving wife: Anne, Oregon, IL; daughter: Laurie Friemuth, Oregon, IL; son: James Thompson, Ashland, VA; and grandchildren: Nick, Max, and Emily Thompson, all of Ashland, VA. He is predeceased by his parents; daughter: Cheri Thompson (1983); granddaughter: Delaney Thompson (2020); and son in law: Bob Friemuth (2020).

Services will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at 11:00 A.M. in Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt. Morris, IL with Pastor Jeremy Heller officiating of Faith Discovery Church, where Arch was a member, treasurer, Deacon, and Elder. Burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery, Mt. Morris, IL. James D. Wright, 39, of Oregon, was arrested at 6:58 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a traffic charge. Wright was also issued a citation for driving while license suspended.

March 2 Adam M. Peterson, 30, of Polo, was issued a citation at 4:35 p.m. for operating a vehicle in violation of the tinted front side windows law. This violation occurred in the 1300 block of Pines Road.

March 3 At 10:43 a.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of West Washington and Monroe streets involving a 2018 Jeep driven by Betty L. Wells, 83, of Mt. Morris, and a 2022 Freight Liner semi driven by Daniel L. Knight, 44, of Roscoe. Wells was issued citations for failure to yield turning left and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. There were no injuries and both vehicles drove away from the scene.

At 3:10 p.m., the Oregon SRO issued a city citation to a juvenile male, 17, of Mt. Morris, for violating Ordinance 6-84, possession of tobacco products and alternative nicotine products. This violation occurred earlier in the day at the Oregon High School, 210 10th Street.

March 4 Diane L. Harrod, 53, of Byron, was arrested

at 7:03 a.m. for retail theft and on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for aggravated battery/use of a deadly weapon.

Harrod was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Nicholas Gazdowicz, 30, of Oregon, was arrested at 5:19 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for domestic battery.

Gazdowicz was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Dustin J. Johnson, 41, of Oregon, was arrested at 7:28 p.m. for driving while under

the influence of alcohol. Johnson was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of Monroe Street.

At 10:24 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 900 block of South Fourth Street resulting in the arrest of Jeremiah J. Pumfrey, 32, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Pumfrey was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

I’ve experienced NIU games at both places and the Convo Center is a big waste of space. The motives were good when NIU built the facility, but it remains a white elephant.

Besides places such as Pec and Lanark for a regional, there was excitement in high school gyms all over Illinois, such as a seven-overtime game and another finish that saw a three-quarters court toss at the buzzer that made ESPN’s Top 10 highlights.

That truly is March Madness.

The NUIC and BNC were well-represented by second-place finishes by 1A Galena and 2A Winnebago. Both teams could have easily came home champs in a tournament characterized by competitive games in all the classes.

Strange stat of the girls tourney was Galena holding a very good Serena team to one point in the first half of the semifinal game. How does a state finalist fail to score a field goal in a half?

As I write this on International Women’s Day, I realize I have been focusing far too much on boys basketball instead of the girls and for that, I apologize.

If it is any consolation, while I was in Salt Lake City over the weekend, I had the opportunity to see the University of Utah’s women’s gymnastics team host Minnesota in a battle of Top 10 teams.

In a measure of how far women’s athletics have come, the gymnastics meets have been drawing twice as many fans to Huntsman Center (site of the famous 1979 Magic vs. Bird NCAA final) as the men’s basketball team.

Ogle County final multiplier has been announced

Ogle County has been issued a final property assessment equalization factor of 1.0000, according to David Harris, director of the Illinois Department of Revenue.

The property assessment equalization factor, often called the “multiplier,” is the method used to achieve uniform property assessments among counties, as required by law. This equalization is particularly important because some of the state’s 6,600 local taxing districts overlap into two or more counties (e.g. school districts, junior college districts, fire protection districts). If there were no equalization among counties, substantial inequities among taxpayers with comparable properties would result.

Under a law passed in 1975, property in Illinois should be assessed at one-third of its market value.

Farm property is assessed differently, with farm homesites and dwellings subject to regular assessing and equalization procedures, but with farmland assessed at one-third of its agriculture economic value. Farmland is not subject to the state equalization factor.

Assessments in Ogle County are at 33.16 percent

of market value, based on sales of properties in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The equalization factor currently being assigned is for 2021 taxes, payable in 2022. Last year’s equalization factor for the county was 1.0000.

The final assessment equalization factor was issued after a public hearing on the tentative factor.

The tentative factor issued in December 2021 was 1.0000.

The equalization factor is determined annually for each county by comparing the price of individual

properties sold over the past three years to the assessed value placed on those properties by the county supervisor of assessments/county assessor.

If this three-year average level of assessment is one-third of the market value, the equalization factor will be one. If the average level of assessment is greater than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be less than one. And if the average level of assessment is less than one-third of market value, the equalization factor will be greater than one.

A change in the equalization factor does not mean total property tax bills will increase or decrease. Tax bills are determined by local taxing bodies when they request money each year to provide services to local citizens. If the amount requested by local taxing districts is not greater than the amount received in the previous year, then total property taxes will not increase even if assessments increase.

The assessed value of an individual property determines what portion of the tax burden a specific taxpayer will assume. That individual’s portion of tax responsibility is not changed by the multiplier.
