Meeting date moved due to school board vote

azoellner@shawmedia.com The Feb. 22 Mt. Morris Village Board meeting has been rescheduled so as to not conflict with the Oregon School Board of Education’s meeting.

The Mt. Morris Village Board’s second February meeting will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at Mt. Morris Village Hall, located at 105 W. Lincoln St. Village President Phil Labash said he requested the change because the Oregon School Board of Education is meeting on Feb. 22 at 6:30 p.m. and plans to vote on the closure of David L. Rahn Jr. High School, the last

school in Mt. Morris.

“This is a critical issue that we have been working on as a community for the past several months,” Labash said. “I want to make sure that I can provide full representation of our board and citizens at this important meeting.”

The Oregon and Mt. Morris school districts merged following the dissolution of the Mt. Morris School District because of financial reasons.

The Oregon School Board of Education’s Feb. 22 meeting takes place at the district office, located at 206 South 10th St., in Oregon. It starts at 6:30 p.m.

David L. Rahn Junior High is located in Mt. Morris. It used to be Mt. Morris High School before the district merged with Oregon.

Seven OHS students named state scholars Seven Oregon High School seniors have been named Illinois State Scholars by the Illinois Student Assistant Commission (ISAC).

Isaac Brooks, Wesley Immel, Jesse Suter, Faith Marquardt, Abigayle Miller, Megan Thompson, and Jenae Bothe were recognized at a recent Oregon High School basketball halftime show.

“Oregon High School is honored to have seven recipients, and we are excited to recognize these individuals for their great accomplishments. The high school has consistently had students named Illinois State Scholars, and we are thrilled to see this continue each year,” said Shannon Cremeens, OHS dean of students.

The State Scholar Program recognizes

high school seniors for outstanding academic achievement, Cremeens said.

ISAC, a state agency, provides students with resources and support to obtain financial aid for higher education. Illinois State Scholar winners rank in the top ten percent of high school seniors statewide.

Selection is based on students’ Prairie State Achievement Exam scores and class rank at the end of the junior year.

Though there is no monetary award for this recognition, State Scholars are found in prestigious universities across the country, recognized for their achievement in high school and their promise for a successful post-secondary future, Creemens said.

DIXON – When Carlie Hamburg, 21, of Dixon, got married in September, she didn’t realize weeks later she’d be fighting for her life against COVID-19 at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.

Carlie, who is unvaccinated, said she believes she contracted the virus from a concert she went to in September.

She’s sharing her journey to show others that the virus’ toll is real, and that people should seriously consider getting vaccinated, the Rochelle native said.

She will herself, she said, once doctors give her the OK as part of the recovery process.

“I hope somebody, somewhere listens,” Hamburg said Jan. 27 from Marionjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, where she spent her last night eagerly awaiting her homecoming.

Her ordeal lasted nearly four months among three hospitals. She was placed on a ventilator and a heart and lungs bypass machine. Friday, accompanied by her 23-year-old husband, Brandon, Carlie returned to their home in Dixon, 121 days after she was hospitalized.

They took their first newlywed photo since the wedding with their dog, Bella.

“I’m not going to lie, I was one of those people that was like, ‘COVID’s political. It’s not that bad. It’s nothing. I’m not getting vaccinated. I won’t be a sheep,’” Hamburg said.

Her experience changed her thoughts on the virus 110%, she said.

“I think, unfortunately, it’s something you have to go through to realize — which sucks,” Hamburg said. “But even some of our closer friends that have gotten it are still like, ‘I’m not getting vaccinated.’

I’m like, ‘You were so sick, complaining; why wouldn’t you?”

‘Nine lives’ for the newlyweds Carlie married the love of her life, Brandon Hamburg, a graphic designer, on Sept. 18 at Barnacopia near Polo. They met when she was 14 and he was 16 through their mutual love of bowling. He went to school in Dixon and she was in Rochelle. They started dating Dec. 20, 2014.

“We were having a jolly old time,” Hamburg said. “[My grandma said] ‘What you guys are dealing with is something that makes you or breaks you,’ I think it definitely has made our relationship. He’s literally

A week after her wedding, Carlie and her sister went to see rapper NF in concert in Dixon, although she had a headache. She thought it was because she hadn’t eaten all day. She woke up the next day “sicker than a dog,” she said, but chalked it up to a late night out.

She went to her job running a Maurices clothing retail store the next day, but left early. By Friday, Sept. 24, she felt miserable.

“I was texting my mom and she was like, ‘You need to go get tested for COVID’,” Hamburg recalled. She went to the emergency room, got a COVID19 test and waited for her results: positive.

“They told me to take a Tylenol every six hours and that did nothing for me,” Hamburg said. “I suffered through the morning of Sept. 29. I couldn’t breathe. I didn’t sleep at all. I was texting my mom because she’s a nurse at Kish and she was like ‘You need to get over here. Go wake Brandon up.’”

When Carlie arrived at Kishwaukee’s emergency room, her blood oxygen was leveling around 50%. A healthy person should report levels near 95%. She was admitted to the intensive care unit with COVID-19 pneumonia.

“I remember them giving me oxygen and running the bloodwork,” Hamburg said, in between a bout of coughs, which she still has. “After that, the only thing I remember was literally screaming ‘No’ to my mom and dad because they were putting me on a vent. And my mom and dad saying how sorry they were.”

On Oct. 8, sedated and on a ventilator, Carlie was flown to Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. She remained for 110 days.

She speaks candidly about the toll hospitalization took on her mentally, the isolation and missing holidays, birthdays and the 7-year anniversary of dating Brandon.

She recalled a moment when she realized how ill she was.

“My mom was here and I was having a horrible day. My mom started bawling and was like, ‘You need to live for today. When you were so sick we thought we were going to have to bury our baby.’” And that’s when I was finally like, ‘Whoa, OK.’ I had like three or four near-death experiences.”

Hamburg suffered a series of complications as her body fought the virus, including blood clotting and bleeding.

“So, I have somebody watching me,” Hamburg said. “I feel like a cat.

ECMO emergency Hamburg’s journey with a ventilator was not as fruitful as doctors wanted, said Dr. Jonathan Tomasko, a heart surgeon at Central DuPage.

To combat that, he used an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine. The ECMO is a cardiac machine similar to a bypass that is connected to a patient by a tube through a vein in the neck and another through the leg. The tubes move blood in and out of the body to re-oxygenate it, taking pressure off laboring heart and lungs.

As was Carlie’s case, ECMO machines are often used for gravely ill COVID-19 patients when a ventilator is no longer effective. While ventilated, patients are often flipped on their stomach, because it’s harder to breathe while lying on your back, Tomasko said.

“When I first met Carlie, she was so sick she couldn’t be flipped over,” Tomasko said. “She was literally dying at Kish. She’s 21, everyone was like, ‘What are we going to do?’ So they gave me a call.”

Even on ECMO, Hamburg remained for a time on a ventilator, although her body still struggled to get oxygen because her lungs were so inflamed.

“So I said, ‘Let’s take the breathing tube [ventilator] out and see what happens, because she’s getting full support on ECMO’,” Tomasko said. “She was able to talk and interact with us.

At least this way she could talk or say goodbye.”

Hamburg remained on the ECMO machine awake and alert and able to move around, from the end of September until Christmas Day. She suffered

other complications from the virus, however, including blood clots, and the inability to eat. She couldn’t walk or stand on her own.

On Jan. 5, Hamburg was able to leave the hospital and began her stay at Marianjoy. She’s done nearly a month of physical therapy, training her body to walk again, building her lungs back up, working on endurance and balance.

She’ll continue that therapy at home.

“When you go through something like ECMO and being away from family, I basically got ripped out of my whole setting for almost half a year and went through hell,” Hamburg said. “I would be lying if I said I don’t think I have a little bit of PTSD from it.”

Surviving a near-death experience and being hooked to machines for months has left her on edge.

“I got a nosebleed today and about lost my marbles, because the last time I had a nosebleed I was at [Central DuPage] bleeding to death,” she said.

“So the simplest of things kind of set me off.”

That’s one of the reasons she’s been allowed to go home a week early. Her discharge was supposed to be next Friday, Feb. 4.

“I’m kind of hitting a wall at this point, I was crying every day, wanting somebody to be here,” Hamburg said.

“This is probably the most depressed I have ever felt. Which, quick fix, go home. My whole mood this week has changed since I found out I was going home.”

Brandon’s visited every day, and Hamburg’s been able to call her family daily, including her parents, Bruce

and Tracy Elder, and sister Alyssa.

She heralded the gracious nurses and hospital staff.

On Friday, her mom and husband got to take Carlie home. She was wheeled into her home and greeted with kisses from Bella.

Her spirit is something Tomasko, who’s treated about two dozen COVID19 patients through ECMO, won’t forget, he said.

“She’s a great person, she’s got a great spirit and her family is amazing,” Tomasko said. “We spent an awful lot of time together, and got to know her and her family very well.

She’s definitely going to leave a mark on me. She’s just a really good fighter and an amazing personality.”

That fighting spirit is something Hamburg believes is the reason she’s still alive.

“Even at the lowest, there’s turning points,” Hamburg said. “Literally giving up isn’t an option. It’s not over until it’s over.

“I just hope [my story] is taken in a positive light, not a ‘stupid COVID,’ or ‘COVID’s not that.’ I guess if people want to think that they can, but I have picture proof.”

She said he’s most looking forward to vacation and much needed married time with Brandon.

“We’re planning our honeymoon around when I get better,” Hamburg said.

“My husband dirt track races, which is something that’s very hard to do when you’re using a walker and wheelchair and your lungs suck and you’re on oxygen. So I’m excited to get back to normal so we can go racing again.”

Teen party in October was a factor in committee decision to deny request

azoellner@shawmedia.com OREGON — A Melrose Park man seeking to rent his “summer home” through Airbnb won’t get the chance unless Ogle County Board members go against the unanimous recommendations of two committees.

Dmitriy Chebanenko is seeking a special use permit for a house that he owns in the Blackhawk Trail Estates residential subdivision through his company, Amazing Empire. The house is located at 1735 N. Sauk Trail, Oregon.

“When I bought the house, we were never living there,” Chebanenko told ZBA members. “It was always a summer home, vacation home. I have a lot of friends and family that actually come and use it.”

A friend suggested he rent it through Airbnb, he said.

“Because eight months, I was there only once or twice myself, I thought, ‘Other people can enjoy this beautiful property on the river and enjoy it no problem,’” Chebanenko said.

On Jan. 20, members of the Ogle County Regional Planning Commission voted unanimously to deny Chebanenko’s petition. Members of the Ogle County Zoning Board of Appeals followed suit on Jan. 27, voting 5-0 to deny the petition after they found the request did not meet any of the six standards needed for approval.

Both recommendations will be reviewed by the Supervisor of Assessments and Planning & Zoning Committee on Feb. 8, and then sent to the full Ogle County Board for a final decision.

During the Jan. 27 meeting, seven people asked the ZBA to deny Chebanenko’s request. Among them were Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle and county board Vice Chairperson Patricia Nordman; the other five are neighbors.

Todd Wood, who lives across the street from Chebanenko’s house,

asked the ZBA to “help us find some peace and quiet” by denying the request.

“This has become known as a party rental,” Wood said.

He, VanVickle and other neighbors Chris Martin, Bud Salter and Herbert Smith spoke about the disturbance resulting from an Oct. 30 party attended by teenagers at Chebanenko’s house.

“While there may have been 50 people there, it took my entire shift, the entire night, to do traffic control and turn away over 200 vehicles,” VanVickle said. “That’s an issue for me.

We have three deputies working at night, 758-square-miles and they basically spent the entire night in a halfmile area taking control of this traffic control issue.

“We had to have other jurisdictions respond to other calls throughout the county because we didn’t have the ability to do it,” he said.

Multiple neighbors noted that the Oct. 30 incident was not an isolated one, and said that there have been multiple disruptive renters.

“There have been other gath er ing s the re tha t were probably pretty boisterous,” Martin said, adding that another issue is there often are six or more garbage cans that sit in front of the house for a week.

Chebanenko acknowledged that the Halloween party should not have occurred, especially since no one under 25 is supposed to be able to rent through Airbnb. He said the teenage renter used their parent’s ID to book and that he was not aware of the situation until law enforcement contacted him.

Chebanenko asked ZBA members why get-togethers are such an issue. If he or his friends or family are coming from the Chicago area for the weekend, they’re want to do things and have fun.

“I’m not coming there to be in a nursing home,” he said. “It’s a house I paid money for.”

ZBA Chairperson Randy Ocken responded that Chebanenko does have a right to hold such events in his own home.

“But you’re here requesting a special use permit for a boarding house [to do Airbnb rentals],” Ocken added.

“That’s the difference.”

Projects at the Polo Historical Museum take center stage

eth, Mike, and myself gathered at the museum this past week to finish up on some projects that needed to be done. Beth helped me in and they both helped me get back into my car.

With all the snow and ice it is impossible for me to navigate with a walker and I most generally stay home.

On this particular day we were hanging the shadow box with artifacts from the Dale Blough collection and I wanted to be there. Krista, our daughter, had purchased this small unfinished shadow box in Wisconsin and Ted Boddiger had stained and finished it for us. It looked great and now was the time to get it up and on the wall.

When Beth and I looked over all his collection, there was this small piece of Acoma pottery which was marked “Acoma” on the bottom. It would get lost in a big display case and it was Beth who suggested that we place it in a shadow box near the Acoma painting.

It is so good to have younger ideas.

I also remember when my first graders would do their Native American program in the fall and we would do our imitation of a rain dance done

by Acoma children. I had music and a script that was authentic for Native Americans.

Now 25 years later I was holding in my hands an authentic piece of Acoma pottery.

The Acoma would use gourds and then apply a thin layer of clay which was polished with a stone. Decorations would be painted on with a brush which had been made from a Yucca plant. It was quite a process.

The Acoma Pueblo is 50 miles west of Albuquerque, New Mexico. This pueblo dates back to 1150 A. D. We also placed in the shadow box a small piece of Nemadji Pottery and while this is not made by Native Americans, it resembles Native American pottery. It is also made from different shades of clay that was left during the Glacial age. This type of pottery started in Minnesota in 1923. This is why Dale Blough had it in his collection.

The next time you are in the museum be sure that you take a look at the shadow box on the wall underneath the Native American lithographs that had hung in Congress School.

The lithographs are by Robert Wesley Amick and depict Native Americans. One is “Acoma Man With Pottery” and the other is “The Indian Weaver.”

While at the museum we also finished up putting away the last of the

Christmas decorations. Mike is now working on the cabinet in the Native American room where Dale Blough’s arrow heads will go.

Glass needs to be placed in the Schryver cabinet that had been in the Ed Olsen home for many years. At one time this cabinet had held all of the Schryver collection which is hard to believe.

Now that collection is in the beautiful cabinets that Ed Olsen and Merle McCaffery made a number of years ago.

The next big project will be Joe figuring out how all Dale’s arrowheads will fit into that cabinet. This is his expertise and he will handle that nicely. I am excited to see how all that will look.

So projects continue at the museum and they keep us all busy.

hile researching Oregon history I am reminded that our history is basically the result of people and families who lived here.

We have at the Ogle County Historical Society families’ diaries and histories of our founder John Phelps, Hugh Rae, the Young family and several others. All of these give an insight into the history of Oregon.

Many events occurred during the lives of our early settlers. Our founder John Phelps is a good example of what occurred during his lifetime. (17961874).

John was born in Virginia, moved to Tennessee and finally to Galena where he opened a business and worked in the lead mines.

At age 18 he served in the War of 1812 at New Orleans, Louisiana. He founded Oregon City in 1836. The name was changed to Florence and finally to Oregon.

While living at his farm between Oregon and Mt. Morris he built a double log cabin and finally a brick house.

We now have his summer kitchen in Phelps Park located adjacent to the Oregon Coliseum.

He lived while the Oregon business district was established, James Gale was our first mayor when the C & I Railroad arrived. The Great Chicago Fire occurred the same year the rail-

road arrived.

Remember this all happened about 30 years before the first car traveled through Oregon. The above is just a few of the events that occurred during his lifetime.

Let’s not forget the events that occurred during our lifetime. During my lifetime there were three wars; WWII, Vietnam and Korea. Many improvements occurred such as vehicle turn signals, color TV, cell phones, computers, microwaves. open heart surgery, etc.

When I attended Oregon Schools we did not have cafeterias. We brought lunch in sacks or lunch pails.

While researching, there are many times it would have been helpful to have more Oregon family histories, or at least their ancestry charts. Also family members in the future will appreciate knowing their family history.

There are numerous sites on the internet where you can find information and ways to research your family history. Start with your present family and begin collecting family photos and identify them on the back of each photo.

We have so many photos at the Oregon Historical Society without their names.

Please don’t hurry this project and you will enjoy learning and recording your family history. Almost all communities have people who spend their

time researching local genealogy and history. Some of us enjoy traveling to the sites their ancient relatives lived.

SPECIAL PROGRAM

The Forest Preserves of Winnebago County (FPWC), in partnership with Severson Dells Nature Center, is launching a series of virtual and in-person community science trainings. The program starts on Feb. 8 for people interested in volunteering as community scientists in area forest preserves.

Participants of all backgrounds and ability levels are welcome to become volunteer bluebird, frog, bat, bumblebees or budburst community scientists.

Community scientists volunteer at forest preserves throughout Winnebago County to record observations of a variety of species along with the environmental conditions within that habitat. Data collected by these individuals in the field are submitted to a variety of state and national repositories to aid in the collective understanding of the natural world, inform natural resource management, and inform the public education programs offered at Severson Dells.

Naturalist and Educator Andrea Wallace Noble said there is a great need for community scientists.

“They are the frontlines of wildlife preservation; the data they contribute could be critical in ensuring the survival of a species,” Noble said. “The Rusty-patched bumble bee is a great example of this! A community scientist discovered this critically-endangered species at one of our forest preserves, which helped FPWC secure $100,000 from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and shape the way we restore our land moving forward.”

Barbara Williams, a dedicated community scientist encourages others to participate. “It’s a really interesting program because you are part of a community and in the process of exploration and discovery,” she said.

The training series kicks off with a general informational session on Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. Specialized training on Zoom will follow. For more information, visit www.seversondells.com.

LOTS to get nearly $3.3M for expansion, electric buses

The Lee/Ogle and Carroll County public transportation systems are getting an infusion of state money to expand facilities and, in LOTS’ case, to add a pair of electric buses, the governor’s office said in a Jan. 26 news release .

The Lee-Ogle Transportation System, which is headquartered in Dixon, will use $3.26 million from the Rebuild Illinois capital program to upgrade the building and add office space at its headquarters at 210 E. Progress Drive in Dixon, LOTS Executive Director Greg Gates said Wednesday.

The grant is part of nearly $111.4 million from the Rebuild Illinois capital program allocated to downstate transportation companies for 63 projects involving facility, equipment and technology upgrades, the release said.

Nearly $2.68 million is earmarked for the LOTS expansion. Plans call for turning the current conference room into office space, adding more offices and fashioning a new conference room at the end of the building.

Gates said he expects the entire project to be finished in a year and a half at the latest.

The two new electric vehicles, for which $591,000 is allotted, will have a range of 150 miles on a charge, and will be used for in-town routes in the Dixon and Rochelle areas, Gates said. They will hold at least 12 to 15 people.

“We’re really excited for the potential of the buses,” he said. “It only makes sense, as we look at the price of gas, to be utilizing some of these vehicles.”

The money comes on the heels of a November 2020, $2.8 million Rebuild Illinois grant, which LOTS is using to

build a satellite office on 3.7 acres at the corner of Pines Road and state Route 2 in Oregon.

LOTS bought the site in May for $190,000, and now is in the process of hiring an engineer and an architect for that project. He hopes to break ground within a year, Gates said.

The bulk of that money will be used to design and build the office, which will be a scaled-down version of the Progress Drive headquarters, he said.

Three new handicapped-accessible buses also are planned. Once the Oregon office is open, routes can originate there instead of in Dixon, which also will save some money, Gates said.

The goal of all these upgrades is to boost ridership, to encourage more people to take advantage of the LOTS system, Gates said.

“Overall, we’re trying to move public transportation even farther forward and attract even more users,” he said, noting that in 2121, thanks to the pandemic, ridership was down about a third, from 100,000 rides in a typical year to only about 60,000.

“We want to continue to meet the needs of people who need public transportation.”

Carroll County Transit plans to take its share of the Rebuild pot, $536,000, and build a garage for its four buses and 10 vans, operations manager Alicia Kness said.

“We’re just so excited.”

She and CCT’s grants manager, Mary Maszk, applied for the funds in late summer or early fall, and if the Illinois Department of Transportation approves, construction will begin in spring on a wooded lot on Benton Street, just off state Route 64, which the state agency owns.

Both Lee-Ogle Transportation Service and Carroll County Transit provide on-demand, curb-to-curb service, as well as some established stops.

They also work in limited partnerships with other surrounding county public transportation systems.

Couple to mark 50th anniversary Larry and Joyene (Scott) Roberts will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Feb. 12.

Polo leans on second-quarter surge to top Amboy

dwussow@shawmedia.com POLO – The Polo boys basketball team built a 15-point halftime lead and cruised to a 36-18 victory over the visiting Clippers on Jan. 26 at Polo Community High School.

From the first quarter, the Marcos were in control. Brock Soltow snagged a pair of offensive rebounds to create a four-point swing early – one followed by a putback and another followed by an assist. Then Carson Jones drilled a right-wing 3 with two minutes left to take an 11-5 lead. That was the score at the end of the period.

In the second quarter, Polo went on a 12-3 run. Tyler Merdian took a defender off the dribble from the high post and knocked down a right-handed floater to make it a 13-5 game less than a minute in. Jones followed with consecutive 3s, the second of which came from the left wing with 4:16 to play and increased the lead to 19-8.

“Credit to Carson Jones, who came in and gave us three 3-pointers. That helped take the lid off,” Polo coach Matt Messer said. “And then it just opens things up. Then Brock Soltow and Tyler Merdian can get in the lane and create.”

Soltow poked the ball loose and went coast-to-coast for a layup, finishing over the top of a defender for a 21-8 lead with 2:15 to go, and Merdian picked up a loose ball off a deflected inbound pass and laid it in to cap the first-half scoring at 23-8 with about 17 seconds on the clock.

“[The 12-3 run] was huge. It gave us separation. Both teams were playing good defense, and we needed to get a breakthrough,” Messer said. “Then we were able to kind of hold them at bay.

Second half was pretty even, but we built that nice cushion.”

Added Jones: “We had a good lead, but it was pretty important, just because we wanted to not give them a chance to come back into the game. So the 12-3 run really set us up for success toward the end of the game.”

Fast-break scoring and rebounding were big parts of Polo’s first-half success. The Marcos snagged 12 rebounds in the first half – including six on the offensive glass – and they nabbed six steals.

“I thought we set the tone right away. I think we had a steal right on the first possession. I think Brock Soltow got a steal and went in for a layup,” Messer said. “It just makes it so much easier, because it opens up the floor.

When teams can set their defense, then its harder to get the shots you want than when teams are in rotation, because they have to scramble to get back.”

In the third quarter, both teams struggled to score, but the Marcos were able to widen their lead with a 5-2 scoring advantage. Kahlil Sankey scored four of their five points in the period on back-to-back layups in the final two minutes, building the lead to 28-8. Polo led 28-10 after three quarters.

By keeping their energy level up on defense throughout the second half,

the Marcos were able to stay in control of the game.

“That’s something that we talked about the last couple of days. We had a really bad first half against Milledgeville the other night, and we played with such urgency, especially on the defensive end,” Messer said. “We talked about, we have to do that for four quarters. We did a great job of keeping up our defensive energy, like in the third quarter, nobody’s scoring, but we were holding our end. And

we’re slowly becoming a team that’s built on defense first.”

“The offense wasn’t clicking,” Merdian said. “We scored five points in the third quarter, so to hold them to two in the quarter just kept us in the game.”

In the fourth quarter, the Marcos dragged out their possessions and milked the clock. Cooper Blake went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line to make it a 30-10 game with 4:08 remaining. With 20 seconds left, Avery Grenoble hit a right-handed hook, ending the game at 36-18.

Amboy coach Brad Dunlap said three main factors were to blame for his team’s defeat.

“For whatever reason, we didn’t come ready to play in [the second quarter]. I probably didn’t do so good a job and didn’t take timeouts. I thought we could play through it,” Dunlap said. “We didn’t really shoot the ball well tonight at all. Gave them a lot of easy transition baskets, which really hurt us. And then second-shot opportunities. They’re big and physical and kind of shoved us under, so we just gotta get better at screening out and really taking good shots and knocking some down.”

Jones and Merdian paced Polo with nine points each, Soltow tallied six points, five rebounds and four steals, and Sankey added four points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Boys bowling Oregon senior Isaac Kaltenbrun finished his high school bowling career at the IHSA State Meet at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon on Jan. 29, bowling a six-game series of 1,087 on Day 2 to finish 73rd overall.

Kaltenbrun advanced to the finals with a Day 1 pinfall of 1,227, earning a spot among the top 30 individuals not on advancing teams. His two-day total of 2,314 left him 452 pins behind individual winner Ethan Caruso of Minooka who rolled a 2,766 to win the title, with Harlem taking the next two spots with Jermarrion Simmons (2,735) and Eric Roberts (2,721).

Kaltenbrun bowled a 572 series in the morning and a 515 in the afternoon, with his first game of the day his highest at 227. He averaged 192.8 pins per game in his 12 games at state. He’s the fourth Oregon bowler to advance to the second day of the state finals, and just the third Hawk to qualify for state twice.

his weekend marks a critical junction in the winter sports season, with boys regional wrestling, girls regional bowling and seeding for girls basketball.

For sure, things are moving into high gear.

The place to be on Saturday will be Dixon, site of the toughest 1A wrestling regional in the state, with No. 1 Dixon, No. 2 Lena-Winslow, No. 8 Dakota, No. 18 Stillman Valley and No. 22 Oregon. Polo (a co-op with Milledgeville, Eastland, and Forreston) will also be at this regional.

The Hawks had been ranked as high as No. 10 earlier in the season in the IWCOA rankings, done by longtime expert Rob Sherrill.

Usually, Le-Win and Dakota battle it out for regional champ, with the winner generally going on to win the state dual title. It will be interesting to see if Dixon can make it a real threeteam tussle.

That will be hard to predict, but this much is true - this regional will likely have the largest attendance of any in the state, regardless of class size.

Dakota and Le-Win are legendary for fan bases, much like Oregon was in its glory days.

With Dixon hosting and having the top-ranked squad, a ton of Duke fans will be on hand.

GUEST VIEW Andy Colbert It will be loud and proud fan bases, with a noise level more intense than what is heard in other sports.

Don’t forget about the girls. They will be competing for IHSA glory for the first time ever on Feb. 11. How about the job done this year by Cadence Diduch, sophomore daughter of former Forreston football coach Denny Diduch?

She made history by winning a boys NIC-10 title last Saturday. Wrestling at 120, she easily dispatched of her foes and had an injury default in the title bout.

One thing I miss with the Big Northern is having a conference mat tourney. Several years ago, the league stopped having that event.

With standouts from Byron, Oregon, Stillman Valley, Harvard, etc. it was always exciting. Certainly, not tied down to a conference meet allows teams more flexibility in scheduling.

Plus, the league is nowhere near as strong as it used to be in wrestling. So, maybe I don’t miss it as much as I

thought.

For those wanting to see one of the best boys 1A basketball teams in the state, No. 2 Scales Mound (21-1) will be taking its act to Polo on Monday, Feb. 7. The Hornets’ only loss (57-53) was to Dubuque Senior, an enrollment disparity of 1,400-70.

Later in the season, Scales Mound will have its toughest test with a game against Chicago Leo, likely the best team in 2A and one that plays very large schools around Chicago. The rural kids versus big city.

I wonder how bad the Scales Mound and West Carroll game was this week.

West Carroll has lost every game, with none closer than 30 points. Usually, they lose by 50-60 points.

First, it was not fielding a varsity football team and now this. Must be a dearth of athletic talent and bodies in this school of 305, I hope the kids not out for sports are doing something worthwhile this winter, like skitching.

It used to be a favorite past-time of some of my buddies and me while in high school. You would either tie a sled to your car or if you were more daring, simply hang on bumper or side of door and use your shoes as skis.

Over by West Carroll, there are probably some good country roads for this. For the record, I am not encouraging said behavior. Injuries can

occur.

A much simpler and easier way to spend one’s leisure time in watching the NFL playoffs. For the second week in a row, it was must-see TV, especially the Cincinnati Bengals upsetting Kansas City.

Sadly, Dr. Johnny Fever of “WKRP in Cincinnati”, actually Howard Hesseman, died the same weekend. The episode with the Thanksgiving turkey drop goes down as one of the best ever.

That sitcom was on so long ago, it may have still been in my skitching era.

How about this for long odds. One bettor put $20 down on a bet predicting the correct scores for Sunday’s NFL championship finals, which were Cincy 27-KC 24 and LA 20-SF 17. Those are fairly common scores, but to pick both correctly, let alone even one is near impossible.

Anyway, this person nailed both scores and was paid back $579,000.

Finally, a tremendous showing by Oregon senior bowler Isaac Kaltenbrun in advancing from Friday’s state finals to Saturday. With that type of competition, that’s a big accomplishment.

By Randy Holland The Oregon wrestling team finished the regular season with a 46-24 loss to eighth ranked Dakota in a make-up meet in the OHS Gym on Jan. 25 and two wins in Byron on Jan. 27.

The Hawks defeated Polo 52-22 before downing the host Tigers 45-34 in an exciting meet that was not decided until the last match.

Against Polo, Preston LaBay, and Jackson Glendenning won by forfeit. Griffin Marlatt took Wyatt Meiners to his back in a half nelson at 1:16. Lucas Nelson of Polo took a forfeit at 126. Lane Halvorson gave up five takedowns to Wyatt Doty in a 10-2 major decision loss, making the score 12-10 in favor of the Hawks, but that was as close as it would get. Seth Stevens pulled a chicken wing back to pin Clay Davis at 2:56.

After the Glendenning forfeit, Anthony Bauer switched into a half nelson to pin Nicholas Cain at 2:07. Gabe Eckerd started with a double to the back and rolled to a 15-6 major decision over Braydon Altherr at 160 pounds.

The Hawks rebounded with a double chicken wing in 31 seconds by Halvorson and a half nelson at 3:31 by Stevens.

They slipped behind again when Jackson Glendenning was thrown and pinned in a headlock in 49 seconds. Bauer closed the gap when he held on for an 8-6 win and Oregon went ahead by five when Eckerd took a wing out front at 3:15. They fell behind again when Austin Peterson was caught in a double chicken wing at 1:22.

Ethan George took a forfeit and Young worked the butcher in five minutes flat to give Oregon an 11 point lead, and it stayed that way when Rote was pinned in a wing at 1:57 and Flaharty took a forfeit at 285.

Byron won 106 by forfeit and with the lead only five, Marlatt couldn’t get pinned or lose by a technical fall. He did better than that, throwing in a half nelson at 3:23 to finish on a strong note for the Hawks with a victory over the arch-rival Tigers.

Jan. 27 Alexis Lueders, 19, of Bettendorf, Iowa, was arrested at 8:43 p.m. for driving on a suspended license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 4000 block of Illinois Route 2 for an equipment violation. Lueders

ehinton@oglecountynews.com An Oregon man suspected of “more than a dozen” burglaries at two campgrounds was in Ogle County jail Monday, facing three felony counts.

Brandon Miller, 28, is being held on $50,000 bond, charged with two counts of burglary and one of burglary without causing damage, court records show.

Burglary is punishable by 3 to 7 years, the lesser burglary charge by 2 to 5 years.

Miller was arrested Jan. 27, after deputies responded to a report of “suspicious activity” at Lake LaDonna, a campground between Oregon and Polo, according to a news release from the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office.

Jan. 28 Matthew Barfield, 19, of Rockford, was arrested at 1:26 a.m.

Deputies stopped a “suspicious” black Dodge Durango and arrested Miller for possession of cannabis, the release said.

“Further investigation into Miller by deputies and detectives concluded that Miller was responsible for committing more than a dozen burglaries at Lake LaDonna Brandon Miller and the Rock River Marina over the last month,” the release said.

Rock River Marina is north of Oregon on River Road. Both campgrounds have year-round sites for recreational vehicles.

Miller has a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
