Trustees again call for reversal of DLR closure

azoellner@shawmedia.com MT. MORRIS – Mt. Morris village officials again are calling for members of the Oregon School Board of Education to reverse their August vote to close David L. Rahn Junior High School at the end of this school year.

Trustees on Jan. 11 voted 5-0 to approve a resolution to “strongly recommend” reconsideration and offered a rational for doing so. Trustee Melissa Nicholson was absent.

“Once that [DLR] is closed, it’s closed. It’s not coming back,” Village President Phil Labash said. “So the reality is, there is a window and that window is now. Keep that school open and viable.”

The resolution, which Labash wrote, asserts that the planned closing of DLR: Will not result in a better education experience for district students and staff, as it does not support the unique educational and social needs of junior high students; Is not in the best interest of Mt. Morris’ students and families, as it will place an increased and unfair financial burden on families within the village; Is not in the best interest of Mt. Morris’ taxpayers and property owners, as it may result in declining property values by negatively impacting demand for family-based housing within the village; May negatively impact the village’s ability to grow and prosper by discouraging investment in new business and housing development that support young families.

Labash wrote the resolution at the request of Rob Urish and an advisory committee that was formed after the initial proposal to close DLR made last May by Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney. The advisory committee was formed to research Mahoney’s proposal.

Mahoney said he proposed closing DLR – the last school in Mt. Morris – because of decreasing enrollment and increasing maintenance costs. On Aug. 16, Oregon School Board of Education members voted 5-2 to move forward with the closure.

The Oregon and Mt. Morris school districts merged in 1994 following the dissolution of the Mt. Morris School District because of financial reasons. Mt. Morris is located five miles west of Oregon and has a population of about 3,000.

“The closure is not a done deal,” Urish said. “The board of education, although they voted on Aug. 16 to do that closure, apparently they were ignorant of an Illinois law that became effective July 30.”

The law requires three public hearings to solicit input from communities regarding the closure of a school unless the building is unsafe, unsanitary or unfit for occupancy.

Labash said the city’s legal counsel and the school district’s legal counsel have differing opinions on the legality of the Aug. 16 vote. Mt. Morris’ attorneys said the three

hearings were not held prior to the vote taking place.

The school district’s attorneys said the board acted within the law, Labash said.

“I would, in a heartbeat, bring a lawsuit from the village’s perspective against the school board for that particular issue,” he said. “But we don’t have legal standing. So for a lawsuit to move forward, that’s going to have to come from a private taxpayer.”

It’s a matter that he has discussed with the advisory committee, Labash said.

“So more to come on that,” Labash said.

The school board held its first of three planned public hearings regarding the school’s upcoming closure and the transition on Nov. 15. The second meeting is scheduled for Jan. 18 and will provide an overview of additional electives for junior high students and how schedules will be managed.

The final hearing will focus on how junior and senior high school activities such as sports, music, plays and clubs will be incorporated.

OES students raise $700 for tornado survivors

OREGON – Oregon Elementary School students raised $700 within two days to help American Red Cross tornado relief efforts in southern Illinois and Kentucky.

To raise the funds, an OES staff member and several students hosted a coin drive wherein student leaders collected money before school started as kids arrived for classes.

“The $700 exceeded our expectations as we only anticipated $100 to $200,” OES Assistant Principal Ryan Huels said.

The $700 was part of $40,000 nationwide raised for the tornado victims.

Huels said school officials were “delighted to see young ones partake in such a worthwhile project.

Only 6% of ICU beds available in Region 1

OREGON – The Ogle County positivity rate for COVID-19 rose over 20% as of Tuesday afternoon, according to county Public Health Administrator Kyle Auman.

As of Jan. 11, the positivity rate in Ogle County is 21.93% and there are 1,520.45 cases of COVID-19 per 100,000 people, he said. The rate of cases is calculated by taking a county’s number of cases over the previous seven days, dividing that by the county’s population and multiplying the result by 100,000, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

“These are the highest numbers we’ve seen since the beginning of the pandemic,” Auman said. “Other states have been seeing this, but this is something new for Illinois, unfortunately.”

Seventeen people died from COVID19 in December, including at least one person in their 30s and one in their 40s,

Auman said. Most of those who died were not vaccinated, he said.

It was one of the most fatal months of 2021 in relation to the pandemic, Auman said.

“My belief is this shouldn’t be happening because there’s vaccines that are shown to be effective in preventing severe illness and death,” he said.

The delta variant remains the more common strand of COVID-19 in Ogle County, Auman said. It wasn’t until this week that the omicron variant was identified in the county, he said.

The health department, local lab partners, health care providers and hospitals are able to track the variants by sending samples in for genomic sequencing, Auman said.

Auman said that while it’s currently believed the omicron variant is less deadly, data suggests it’s potentially the most transmittable disease the world ever has seen.

If omicron really is less deadly, that’s good, but the transmission rate is concerning, he said.

“The more hosts it finds, the more easily it mutates into other strains, so that is concerning for public health,” Auman said.

Too few hospital beds left As of Jan. 10, Region 1’s intensive care unit bed availability was at 5%, according to the IDPH. Also on Jan. 10, hospitals in Rockford reported there were only two ICU beds available in the city, Auman said.

It’s a situation that matters to Ogle County residents because many area patients are transferred to Rockford hospitals for ongoing treatment and care, he said.

for places to transfer patients, Auman said.

“It’s certainly not a good situation to be in,” he said. “There’s many impacts that these high hospital utilizations will impact.”

Having to dedicate more and more resources toward trying to stabilize and address COVID-19 patients puts much stress not only on personnel, but also on hospitals’ financials, Auman noted. The financial challenges are compounded by the inability to perform elective surgeries and other services that generate revenue for going on three years, he said.

In many communities, hospitals are one of the largest employers and have a large economic impact on the surrounding area, Auman said.

“I think this pandemic is going to change the face of health care as we know it,” Auman said.

Staffing and payment models need to be examined, both in relation to employees and how hospitals themselves are paid, he said. What responsibilities hospitals have in a pandemic also needs to be considered.

Polo elementary in a two-week ‘adaptive pause’

azoellner@shawmedia.com POLO – Centennial Elementary School in Polo implemented a two-week “adaptive pause” that started Jan. 7.

Aplington Middle School and Polo Community High School students are continuing in-person learning.

“We are taking this step due to increased cases of [COVID-19] symptomatic students and staff,” Superintendent Kelly Mandrell wrote in a Jan. 6 letter to district families. “Though we initially had hope to forgo a building-wide closure, through examination of the data and our local health officials, we have regretfully concluded that this is the appropriate course of action.”

The plan is for elementary students to resume in-person attendance on Jan. 24, according to the letter.

“We apologize for any confusion or frustration this announcement may have caused,” Mandrell wrote. “Having watc hed our numbers conti nu e to increase since returning from break, the decision had to be made to keep everyone safe.”

Students will have work sent home to them for Jan. 7, the letter states. Teachers will send a schedule for students to start logging in on Jan. 10.

Households that require a hotspot for internet should contact Centennial’s office the morning of Jan. 7, so that a hotspot can be delivered along with lunches, Mandrell wrote.

Margaret Fuller visited Oregon July 1-5, 1843

By OTTO DICK Restarting my articles, I chose three very special events that occurred in Oregon. These are the visits of Margaret Fuller, Abraham Lincoln and President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Seven years after Oregon was founded, Boston transcendentalist Margaret Fuller traveled by boat from Buffalo to Chicago, then overland to Dixon and finally to visit her uncle who lived in a cabin located near where Black Hawk Statue stands today. William Fuller who practiced law in this area was a Harvard-trained lawyer.

“Even though there were only about 200 residents of Oregon at that time, the community held a Fourth of July Celebration, complete with keynote speaker by an New England orator. Margaret’s day included a visit to the bluff named Eagle’s Nest, dinner, ice cream, fireworks and a trip to town. Her party crossed the Rock River in a flotilla accompanied by fifing and drumming.

Margaret, a feminist, believed achieving equal rights for women was to provide education for women. She was the first woman allowed to use the library at Harvard College.

She led seminary discussions concerning women’s lack of access to higher education. In 1844, she became the literary critic of the New York Tribune. Margaret considered the Native Americans an important part of American heritage.

The first Margaret Fuller Festival was held on September 17, 1880, 30 years after her death and 37 years after her visit to this valley.

In 1880, there were some citizens around who might have been here when Margaret visited. She would have been 70 years old if she could have returned for the dedication.

Over 1,500 citizens gathered for the dedication of Margaret Fuller Island, Eagle’s Nest Bluff and Ganymede Spring. Two Rock River Steamboats,

The Rover and the Occidental, helped transport people to the sites.

A barge was used to carry people to the island. Picnics, reunions, a choir and the Rock River Cornet Band added to the celebration.

It is interesting that the first woman allowed to use the Harvard University Library was honored with a festival in Oregon just 14 years after the close of the Civil War. Margaret Fuller named Ganymede Spring and wrote Ganymede to His Eagle, July 4, 1843. So today when you see Fuller Island, Ganymede Spring

and Eagle’s Nest tree laying on the ground at Taft Campus, remember her visit to Oregon seven years after Oregon was founded. Being here just five days, she left a lasting impact on this area.

The next two articles concern two Presidents, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt speaking in Oregon, Illinois.

Many hospitals are private businesses, yet “we’re expecting them to jump in like a government agency,” Auman said.

Protecting yourself and others “Really, this is a situKyle Auman ation where we absolutely need the public’s help,” Auman said. “We need everybody to get on board.”

Getting vaccinated – or getting the booster shot – is strongly encouraged and is one of the best protections, he said. Social distancing, masking, being mindful of interactions and staying out of large crowds are “the biggest opportunities we have to make a difference,” Auman said.

Auman also encouraged people to monitor themselves for even the most mild symptoms, and to isolate if they exhibit them, at least until testing negative for COVID-19. Additionally, it’s good to communicate with those you’ve recently been close to that they need to be careful as well, he said.

“The public needs to participate for all of us to be successful,” Auman said. “These are public health issues we all have a stake in addressing.”

Vaccines available in Mt. Morris, Forreston Clinics offered at Mt. Morris church Jan. 21 and Feb. 11 Trinity Lutheran Church, Mt. Morris will be hosting two COVID19 vaccination clinics. The first date is Friday, Jan. 21; the second date is Friday, Feb. 11. The clinics will be open from 1 to 5 p.m.

Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines and boosters will be available, plus vaccines for those 5 to 17 years old. The vaccinations are free.

Festive mood continues despite the cold and COVID

W

inter is letting us know just who is boss and I sat the othe r nigh t in my warm family room contented. I thought about all the things outside in the bitter cold since it was around zero. Suddenly I remembered I had not emptied my rain barrel.

So the next morning with my heavy coat, hat, scarf, mittens and snow boots, I maneuvered my walker to the edge of the patio.

I peered around the side of the house and realized I was too late in my fall duties. I also decided I did not belong out in zero weather. My knee did not like to be out tramping around in the cold so I made a hasty retreat back inside.

Later on in the week I headed up to Rockford for my pre-op visit and my knee surgery was still a go. Bruce drove me around in Rockford to see some of the latest things they are doing to revamp the downtown. We went by the Rockford Women’s Club downtown and that brought back memories.

Adaline Beck to celebrate 102 years

Adaline Beck of Polo will be celebrating her 102nd birthday on Jan. 22.

Adaline was born Jan. 22, 1920 and was married to the late Dale Beck.

They were blessed with four children: Bev (Bob deceased) Merdian, Rodger (deceased), Linda (Steve) Grossnickle, and Donna (Kenny) Soltow and six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one greatgreat-grandchild.

POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf Years ago, Lois Schmidt and I used to go shopping in downtown Rockford and then we would walk to the Rockford Women’s Club for lunch. I can still remember that as if it were yesterday and yet that has to be more than 50 years ago. I do not even know where we shopped but I can remember where we ate.

Soon it was time to head for my appointment and that went well. I had been reading about all the spike on this new variant and I was a little apprehensive if my surgery would even take place. When I left, all was still on schedule.

I got home around 1 p.m. and at 2 p.m. I got the call that my knee replacement had been canceled due to COVID.

How does anyone make plans anymore with this virus still going on?

Will it never end? I quickly decided that I needed to do something pleasant in the house.

Taking down Christmas decorations is not pleasant because I hate to see the holiday season end. So I decided to redecorate my big Christmas tree.

This is not unusual for me since I used to do that in Eagle Point all the time. I had so many vintage decorations that I might redo a tree several times.

So I took my Shiny Brite colorful ornaments off the tree and turned it into a snow tree with white snowflakes and silver garland. As I packed away the beautiful colored Shiny Brite balls, I realized that I had never finished the story of Shiny Brite.

Max Eckardt, in New York, had been ordering all his decorations and holiday cards from Germany since 1907. In 1937, he saw the war coming and he realized he needed to change his routine. Corning, in the United

States, was making clear light bulbs and Mr. Eckardt went to Corning for help.

Corning furnished him with clear round bulbs and Mr. Eckardt had people paint them with pictures on them.

Also they had words on them such as “Merry Christmas” and “Silent Night.”

They had beautiful colors and they look lovely on your tree today.

In the 1940s and1950s they were pushed as being made in American.

Those that have survived in their original boxes are collector’s items.

I have several original boxes with those Shiny Brite ornaments still in great shape and I love to put them on my tree each year.

This week I packed them away and brought out the snowflakes because right now it is cold and snowy. Inside, I am still in a festive mood.

Mobile pantry in Mt. Morris on Jan. 27 MT. MORRIS – Loaves and Fish Food Pantry, in conjunction with the Northern Illinois Food Bank, is hosting a Mobile Food Pantry on Thursday, Jan. 27, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The truck will be at the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center, 101 Moose Drive, in Mt. Morris.

This mobile pantry is open to anyone in Ogle County.

Loaves and Fish Food Pantry is located on the lower level of the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren, 409 W. Brayton Road. It is open on the first and third Thursdays from 4:30 to 7 p.m. and second and fourth Mondays from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

LANARK – The nearly 50-year-old Lanark Building Center, which housed a lumberyard and hardware store at 213 W. Carroll St., was destroyed by a fire Sunday night.

Firefighters from five counties, many of them volunteers, responded to the blaze, which was called in to 911 around 7:30 p.m. by a passerby who saw smoke in the area, Lanark Fire Chief Cory Barnes said.

The fire started in the workshop area and destroyed not only the building and contents, but also a forklift and two pickup trucks, Barnes said.

No one was injured.

Barnes expects the damage will top $2 million.

A little more than 1.2 million gallons of water, from Lanark and also hauled in from Shannon and Chadwick so as not to drain the village water supply, was used to fight the fire, Barnes said. The scene was cleared shortly after 1 p.m. Monday.

The state fire marshal is investigating, but the cause is not suspicious, Barnes said.

Fortunately, the only propane on-site was in small cylinders used with barbecue grills, and those were removed before the fire could reach them.

The frigid temperatures also played a role. The streets had to be salted multiple times to keep from icing over, and firefighters “couldn’t be left out there too long” and had to be rotated in and out.

In addition to the lumber yard and hardware store, Carroll Service Co., which has branches in Carroll and western Ogle counties, provides agriculture and energy-related products.

It has been in business in this village of 1,500 since 1963, and was a full-service hardware store and lumber yard with nearly 50 vendors selling paints, tools, construction and building materials, decking products, grass seed, fertilizer and more, the company said on its Facebook page.

“Hopefully, they’ll rebuild,” Barnes said.

“While we are saddened by the devastating fire last night, we want to thank all of the local fire departments that responded,” the company posted on its Facebook page. ”We are extremely grateful for our local first responders and the support from our local communities.”

The charred remains of a truck can be seen in the rubble. Another truck and a forklift also were lost in the fire.

Halvorson started with a bye, pinned with a double chicken wing at 1:10 in the quarterfinal and used the half nelson at 2:55 in the semifinal. He lost a tough one in the medal match, going down 9-6 to Tyler Calam of Freeport, unable to overcome a lost reverse at the start of the third period.

Stevens also had a bye and pinned his way to the first-place mat with a cradle in 34 seconds and a single leg takedown into a chicken wing at 1:40 in the semifinal. A reverse and a takedown in the third period of the final was not enough in a 7-4 loss to Ben Fosdick of Fulton.

Flaharty pinned twice to reach the first-place mat, scoring a takedown in a half nelson in 30 seconds. A takedown to the back at 2:34 advanced him to the medal match where he was pinned in a half nelson by seventh-ranked Elijah Friedrichsen of Erie.

The story of the night was the record-setting performance by Oregon’s Ava Wight who rolled a 729 series (267, 269, 193), the highest recorded girls match score in school history.

ow that the first part of the basketball season is over and teams are locked into conference play, the most recent AP rankings begin to make sense.

Though the NUIC is down a bit when in comes to girls teams, River Ridge is No. 5 and Stockton and Galena received honorable mention votes.

This is a league usually represented at the state tournament. Amboy was the consensus top Class 1A squad in the COVID-19-shortened season, though it had the misfortune of not having a state title to play for.

In 2020, the Clippers and Eastland dominated state and had that classic sectional final. Stockton (2018) and Eastland (2019) were recent state runner-ups.

For the NUIC boys, Fulton, which is in its second year in the NUIC, is ranked No. 2. Tiny Scales Mound is No. 5, even receiving three first-place votes.

The far northwest part of the state is loaded with talent, as traditional power East Dubuque has a deceiving 7-4 record and Galena is 12-4.

Unfortunately, all four of those schools are assigned to the same sub-sectional. Geographically, not much you can do about it in such a land-locked region.

Hmm? The Winnebago girls continue to be touted as a runaway favorite to win 2A, as evidenced by a 33-point margin of victory over its first 18 opponents.

The Bago boys program usually gets all the hype, with coach Joe Murphy compiling a 682-246 record over 32 years. But girls coach Judy Krause isn’t too shabby herself, coming on board in 1986, ironically after Murphy spent the previous five years as girls coach.

Find me a head boys and girls coach at the same school with more longevity together than Murphy and Krause. It sure makes the athletic director’s job a lot easier not having to constantly hire coaches.

Locally, the best 2A hope for the boys is old standby Rockford Lutheran, whom many considered the best team

I finally got to a game in person and saw Lutheran dismantle an outmanned Oregon ball team. They aren’t very tall and didn’t shoot well, but are extremely adept as forcing turnovers into points.

It used to be the 1A and 2A boys supersectional had a doubleheader at NIU. With the IHSA going to all classes playing downstate on the same weekend, the supersectional will be a 1A/4A doubleheader.

Interesting. The smallest and largest classes sharing the limelight together.

The 2A supersectional will be at Sterling High School, a much better environment for small-school ball.

Yes, it doesn’t have the glitz of being at Convocation Center in DeKalb, but rent will be a lot cheaper.

During the chilly, shorter days of winter, more time is spent in front of the computer and while perusing old IHSA stuff, I noticed that a man named William Asp of Mt. Morris was the chief scorer for the 1969 state basketball tournament.

Who was William Asp and why was he chief scorer? After some investigation, I learned he was scorer for Mt. Morris basketball games for many

Old-timers remember Asp using placards with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on them. Whenever a foul was called, he would wave whatever number corresponded to the particular player.

That practice is long gone, but was helpful to officials and coaches in determining how many fouls a player had. Another thing rarely seen anymore are players raising their hand when a foul is called on them.

It used to be mandatory, but perhaps it was stopped so as not to embarrass the offender.

While unearthing this info, I also learned plans are in the works for a 50-year celebration of the undefeated Mt. Morris football team of 1972. It wasn’t just basketball that Mt. Morris was good in during the early 1970s.

The Mounders were conference champs in 1972, but unable to partake in the postseason, as the IHSA playoffs did not commence until 1974. Mt. Morris was able to make it into the playoffs in 1991 and 1992, the final two years the high school existed.

Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County gets grant

A $32,000 grant will help Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County, Inc. continue its mission to provide affordable housing for Ogle County residents.

Habitat has received a $32,000 grant from the Community Grants Program of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois with support from the Dr. Louis and Violet Rubin Fund for its Building New 2022 Habitat Life Stories.

Board President Gail Tuttle and Vanessa WhiteBroome, the executive director, announced the award this week.

“By partnering with those qualified in the Ogle County service area, our affiliate provides opportunities for homeownership thus opening doors to security, stability, hope and a sense of pride in becoming a homeowner,” White-Broome said in a news release. “Though 2020 and 2021 were challenging years in so many aspects, our organization was able to continue to serve lower-income residents in Ogle County with our various housing solutions.”

Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to eliminate poverty housing by building simple, decent affordable houses for people in need, helping to revitalize neighborhoods and communities.

With volunteer labor and tax deductible donations of materials and money, the agency builds and rehabilitates houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.

“In 2020, our largest project started was a 4-bedroom home for a family of six. We are so thankful for the long standing support of our organization,” White-Broome said. “In large part due to prior grant awards, we have been able to help more families live in decent, sustainable and affordable housing.

“In the year 2021, Habitat also completed two handicap ramp projects and other Brush with Kindness repair projects. All these projects improved day to day living activities for our new Habitat partner families.”

We are fortunate to be based in a county that understands why

we do what we do year after year.”

Habitat for Ogle County partners each year with families and individuals to offer them opportunities to reside in improved housing.

“We believe that everyone, everywhere should have a healthy, affordable place to call home. When an individual helps build or improve their residence, they are not only building a better life for themselves, but also building a better community,” White-Broome said.

The 2021/22 Community Foundation funds from the Dr. Louis and Violet Rubin Fund, received in December 2021, through the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, will assist in serving more families as Habitat for Humanity of Ogle County fulfills its mission.

“Since our start up in 2002, we’ve been building affordable quality homes for lower-income families that might not otherwise have qualified for a mortgage. Our programs are a “hands up, not a handout,” White-Broome said. “Specifically, the 2021/2022 $32,000 grant award will assist greatly with our 2021 building projects. One project planned is the building of a three- to four-bedroom home in Rochelle, and Brush with Kindness projects that will result in repairs and ramps.”

The agency’s goal remains working alongside individuals in Ogle County to improve their living conditions by offering opportunities for a more stable life as a homeowner, she said.

“The $32,000 grant funds from CFNIL for 2022 will aid greatly in serving more Ogle County families,” she said.

The mission of the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois is to serve as a catalyst for giving in order to attract, preserve and grow an endowment for the current and future needs of the people of northern Illinois. Since its founding in 1953, CFNIL has granted more than $65 million for charitable purposes in the region.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF ACTIVITY Jan. 3 Ezequiel Lopez-Gamez, 57, of Elgin, was cited at 2:50 p.m. for driving with no license and speeding in the 20000 block of Illinois Route 64. Lopez-Gamez was given an I-Bond for his citations and released.

A 16-year-old male juvenile was arrested at 10:44 p.m. for domestic battery and disorderly conduct after deputies responded to a disturbance in the 200 block of East Third Street in Leaf River. The juvenile was released into the custody of his parents.

A 17-year-old juvenile from Leaf River was taken into custody for aggravated fleeing to elude and no valid driver’s license. Deputies had attempted to stop the juvenile’s vehicle in the 13000 block of Illinois Route 72 at 10:47 p.m.

The vehicle eventually stopped near the intersection of Walnut Avenue and Green Street in Forreston. The juvenile also was cited for speeding 35-plus mph, obstructed registration, driving without headlights and possession of cannabis. The juvenile was released to a parent and will appear in court at a later date.

Jan. 4 Steven W. Crudup Jr., 32, of Rockford, was arrested at 4:53 p.m. for driving on a revoked license after deputies conducted a traffic

in the area of mile marker 103 at 9:12 p.m. for failing to pull over for emergency vehicles (Scott’s Law violation). Black also was cited for failing to pull over for emergency vehicles. Black was released on a signature I-Bond with a return court date.

He was arrested after deputies responded to the 2300 block of Fourth Street in Daysville in reference to a disturbance. Simmons was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

The Oregon Police Department assisted.

Jan. 5 Paul Bush, 43, of Dixon, was arrested at 3:10 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after deputies responded to a car in the ditch at the intersection of Conger and Plum Hill roads. Bush was released on an I-Bond and given a future court date.

Jan. 7 Darrius Parker, 39, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to Stillman and High roads in reference to a car in the ditch about 1:39 a.m. Parker also was cited for improper lane use and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Parker was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held

in lieu of bond.

Eric L. Francis, 27, of Oregon, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and unlawful possession of cannabis/driver after deputies responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash in the area of Illinois Route 64 and Garnhart Road about 2:49 a.m. Francis also was cited for improper traffic lane use, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

John W. Sherman, 44, of Rockford, was arrested for driving on a revoked license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 block of Illinois Route 72 at 7:04 p.m.

Sherman also was cited for speeding 15-20 mph above the speed limit and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Sherman was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Taylor Black, 23, of St. Louis, Missouri, was arrested for driving on a suspended license after deputies stopped Black on Interstate 39

Jan. 8 Kevin Beard, 23, of Mt. Morris, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded to a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Columbine and Townline roads about 1:54 a.m.

An investigation showed that it appeared Beard was traveling south when he failed to yield as he approached the intersection.

Beard’s vehicle traveled through the intersection before striking a tree.

Beard also was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

The Forreston Fire Department and EMS assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Jan. 10 Luna V. Barrett, 20, of Princeton, was arrested for driving without a valid driver’s license after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 5000 block of Illinois Route 2 at 8:51 a.m. Barrett was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

He was born April 20, 1928 in Adeline, IL, the son of Orville and Mae (Stukenberg) Snyder.

Dale married Adelaide Cook October 14, 1950 in Oregon, IL. Dale farmed the family farm near Adeline.

Dale is survived by his wife Adelaide Snyder of Polo, IL; two sons, Orville (Sue) Snyder of Byron, IL and Bill (Donna) Snyder of Malvern, AR; three daughters, Jean (Jeff) Burton of Forreston, Il, Carolyn Levan of Dixon, IL,

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Knott; son-in-law, Dennis Levan; and great-grandson, Jordy Snyder. A memorial service will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday January 15, 2022 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Forreston, IL. Visitation will be from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service.

Burial of cremains will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport, IL at a later date. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for Polo Rehabilitation and Health care Center. The family would like to thank Polo Rehabilitation and Health Care Center for the excellent care Dale received.
