for the gun, choose the fuse and powder charge, and incorporated the weather data to determine all the information. He then sent the numbers to the gun. Now, all that was left was to get on the internal radio and tell the gun when to fire. Except... the radio went dead. Terry ran outside toward the gun, counting down the time in his head. Two minutes later the big gun roared. Terry had confirmed the data and made his best guess on when to yell, “Number One Gunnnnnn... Fire!!!” Those of us inside with the General saw something interesting. By all accounts, Wesmoreland was a good guy. He loved his soldiers. I’d guess he wasn’t afraid of anything. And, he was an artillery man who had commanded a battery in his early years. But a 175mm gun was huge. Even if you know it’s coming and you think you are prepared, you are not. Westy jumped a foot in the air. And we pretended not to notice. Terry came back inside. The general asked him how long the round would be in the air. “75 seconds, Sir.” How long until splashdown? “37 seconds, Sir.” (He was guessing that half the time of flight had expired.) The red haired Spec 5 held his breath. Then... at exactly 1430 hours military time... the air observer came on the big radio. “Oscar Foxtrot Sierra!” (which was military talk for “OFC”. Which was “cool guy” talk for Out Freaking Standing (or almost that). All the artillery ordinance had hit earth and exploded in unison. Westy nodded. Ivan grinned. The Hippy mumbled, “Far out”. And I looked at my new boots. The General’s Aide yelled. “Tennnnn Hut” and we all snapped to attention. Sort of ... we were hippies, Cajuns, and pampered college kids. William C. Westmorrland departed and Terry exhaled. He had just performed a precision exercise in front of the most powerful military man in the world. He did it with a crew that was better suited

for Heavy Metal Music and Miller Time than Heavy Artillery and Time on Target. -Act Two It was 40 years later, and I was at the luggage turn style in Las Vegas, waiting to see a familiar face. It was about to arrive. And very easy to spot. Same height and walk. Not far from playing weight and the look in his eye I remember. One difference. The bright red hair had evolved to pure white. With great joy and a touch of the melancholy, I began my reunion weekend with a dozen guys I hadn’t seen in four decades, The emotions of that weekend (exactly 10 years ago today) were overpowering. When you reunite with comrades you only knew as soldiers... from a time and place surrounded by violence and adrenaline... it’s an euphoric experience. We embraced, laughed, shared our first real dinner together, played golf, smiled at the cocktail waitresses, and got a bit misty. Terry had been a leader back in the jungle. And now he led us through the desert of Las Vegas. Always facilitating our conversation and encouraging others to tell their story. Still a leader. He got us back together and has kept us a
tight group since the first reunion. -EPILOGUE Everyone has a little Forest Gump in them. Brushes with famous people or famous times. Jack Nicklaus once ASKED ME a question, then pretended to take my advice. Wilt Chamberlain once INTRODUCED HIMSELF to me, and joked around for a coupe minutes. And, the 1960s rock group, The Turtles, once INVITED ME to have breakfast with them in Kansas City, and they paid. But, one of my most memorable characters is Terry. The day after our Westmoreland encounter, The Hippy said to Terry, “You know, Jon did OK. He will probably be as good as Ivan.” Terry replied, “As good as Ivan? Ha! Jon is a college graduate who is good at math. He’ll figure out artillery and some day be running this section.” I never forgot that. From that minute, I quit being a rookie. Quit being obsessed about how I was going to survive. And started to be an artillery soldier. It became more like a mission and a responsibility instead of an exercise in self preservation. I won’t even begin to say I wasn’t afraid of something most of the time, but I didn’t let
that get in the way of the job. Terry showed me how to manage a small group. To find out what people did well and give them a lot of it. His words changed my year in Vietnam and maybe my life. So, when I think about memorable characters, he’s higher on the list than any those famous people I have stumbled upon... even General Westmoreland (although he was a a cool guy to meet). Terry went back to Pennsylvania and Penn State. He worked at the Penn State newspaper, and eventually spent a lengthy career as a sports writer/editor in Rhode Island. He has written and published books. About veterans. About Vietnam. And even one about our “band of brothers” from A Battery of the 2nd/32nd circa 1967- 1969. The book about us leaves out the story of one important character: The author. Over the years, I have remembered his demeanor, his leadership and those words about me that changed my attitude. Terry was an important character in the story of A Battery. And symbolic of the skill and character of the Vietnam era draftee (whether he was leading us or “showing off” for General Westmoreland). It took me over 50 years, but it was time to tell a little of his story.

He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Christmas Eve 1941. He was assigned to the Marine contingent aboard the aircraft carrier Lexington. The Lexington became involved in the Battle of the Coral See with Japanese naval forces. On May 8, 1942 the Lexington was attacked and John Martin Steele Jr. was killed in action and the Lexington subsequently sank. Steele was the first resident of Grundy County to be killed in action in World War II

“It’s the best thing that happened to me. In basic training, I learned how to respect people and take orders. At 20 years old, I thought I knew everything. After, I realized that I didn’t know everything,” Gill said.
A week before Christmas in 1977, Gill was flown back to the United States to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he underwent physical therapy twice a day for four months. He was discharged to his parents’ care in March 1978.
He said he has tried to remain grateful to be alive. He said he felt he received top notch care during his recovery.
In 1978, his new reality was to live with his parents, which he said may have been by design.
