Summer Day Camp returns and offers new experiences By Allison Selk Morris YMCA Summer Day Camp will return in full-swing this summer, chock-full of on and off campus field trips, pool days and on-campus entertainment and sports. It’s been two years since the camp was able to be back to “normal” status since the Covid restrictions began in 2020, and Jordan Overton, youth and family director said she was ready for this year’s camp. “We are ready to bring normalcy back to camp and offer new experiences,” Overton said. “We have new field trips, we are partnering with local organizations and provide variety. Last year was still a different summer, we want to broaden horizons.” Each of the 10 weeks of camp has a different theme such as “Imagination Destination,” “Magnificently Messy,” “Y-Limpics,” “SPLASHtacular,” and “Camp Superheroes” to name a few. Each week brings new field trips, arts and crafts, athletic games, guest entertainers and projects to coincide with the theme. Overton said it’s important to not only focus on play during the summer camp at the YMCA, but a strong focus on character traits such as relationship building, personal development, empathy, emotion management and responsibility. “What sets us apart is how we focus on character traits and develop the traits into the daily camp with team building, crafts and activities; we want to keep kids busy, moving and trying something new,” Overton said. Along with the character traits, the counselors also teach the YMCA four core values, respect, responsibility, honesty and caring. “We want to shape kids into great individuals in the community,” Overton said. Individuals 16 years of age and older work as counselors for the camp and the application process remains open for these positions. Overton said she sees a large number of young adults work at the camp who have goals to work in recreation or education. “It’s a great resume builder with hands-on experience,” Overton said. In addition to the counselors, those who will be
in junior high, grades 7-8, the following year can apply to the Counselor in Training (CIT) program. Students register for camp as usual, but fill out the CIT application, an interview process and references will follow before selections made for the CIT positions. Overton said her favorite part about camp continues to be the “unplug” aspect of camp. “Especially in this day and age, kids can unplug from electronics, meet together with friends, try new things, build lasting memories and get out and have fun. It’s important for kids to unplug and try new experiences.” Children in grades K-8 can attend summer camp, which runs 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 6 to Aug. 12. Weekly rate for facility members runs $170 per child and $195 per child for community members, plus a $45 non-refundable registration fee per family. Registration opened March 5. Registration and more information on the camp can be found on the website at jolietymca.org, Morris location.

Stop in to receive the personal touch at
The Front Porch SUBMITTED STORY This year, The Front Porch has been open for 22 years. There have been many changes throughout those years, but there have also been many aspects of the store that has remained the same. The Front Porch began in 2000 with about 1,800 square feet of retail space on Washington Street. Today they have over 4,000 square feet of retail space on Liberty Street. Different products have come and gone over the years, mostly merchandise to stay with the current trends. But The Front Porch has stayed true to their mission when they opened their doors. They have always been that “one stop shop” in Morris. It’s an old cliché but they also strive to be an old fashioned store. They believe in common courtesy, kindness, friendliness and good old-fashioned personal customer service. In this day and age where the only thing between you and your purchases are a click of a mouse on a computer and a random box left on your front stoop, The Front Porch prefers to offer the personal touch that is lost in that transaction. From the beginning in 2000, they have stayed true to their roots. The Front Porch has always been the place to go for gifts, candles, unique home furnishings, linens tabletop accessories, gourmet foods and kitchen gadgets. In 2003 they became the first store to acquire a wine license to sell wine and accessories. Throughout the past year, The Front Porch has reconfigured the interior of the store to a more open flow to really showcase all of their offerings. This has allowed them to expand their products. They have increased their line of kitchen gadgets and they now carry more gourmet food lines, including charcuterie boards and beautiful trays. Additionally, you’ll find new jewelry lines in the store. As always, another old cliché The Front Porch lives by is “without you, there is no us.” The Front Porch is thankful for 22 years of business, opportunity and customers that have become friends

This year, Weits Café in downtown Morris became a ghost kitchen for three concept restaurants in addition to the café. Buddy V’s cake slices, Wow Bao and Mr. Beast Burger are all virtual brands consumers can order online and either pick up in store of have delivered through DoorDash. Brian Olson, owner of Weits Café said his 15 year background in corporate quick service restaurant (qsr) gave him the idea launch this concept in Morris to offer a variety of food options for customers. A unique spin-any of the foods can be ordered any time during hours of operation, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., so if someone wants a burger at 9 a.m. from Mr. Beast Burger, that can be ordered. The re-branded Weits Café opened during the pandemic and Olson said the ghost kitchens have help supplement during low foot traffic times in the café. Minimal equipment needed to be purchased to be able to prepare the different menus, and some ingredients have been streamlined with the café and the virtual restaurants. Olson said he chose the three concepts to start based on popularity of the brands. For example, Mr. Beast Burger has celebrity status all over YouTube, and also exchanges promos on other social media sites such as TikTok and Roblox, which typically targets 12 to 18 year olds, but Olson said he sells significantly to the 30 to 45 year old market too, so the product awareness has broadened. Olson said mid-week he sees an upswing of pick-
Chicken sandwiches and sides such as the “Beast Style Fries” with caramelized onions, American cheese, pickles, mayo, ketchup and mustard round out the menu. Wow Bao offers selections such as Bao, yeast leavened filled bun; teriyaki chicken, Kung Pao chicken, and orange chicken bowls; pot stickers; and steamed dumplings. Buddy V’s cake selections include confetti, vanilla rainbow, chocolate fudge, red velvet and black and white fudge. Olson said he could see the café add two to three more virtual brands soon and thoughts remain on the table to have its own digital brand called “Weits After Dark,” a concept with a limited menu and carry-out only after the normal 3 p.m. close time of the café. The café itself will see a spring menu roll out within the next 30 days with new fresh options such as salads, dips and appetizers as well as an expanded frozen drink selection. Beer, spritzers, Irish cream coffee, cocktails and specialty and bottomless mimosas, can be ordered at any time as well as coffees, cocoas, juices, teas, sodas and monthly drink specials. The menu reads as an upscale diner, where customers can get classic favorites or a modern twist. Olson wanted to extend gratitude toward his chef Adam Schlotter, who through a pandemic created a menu to launch the restaurant and provides homemade soups, family recipes as well as brings Olson’s ideas to fruition. He also wanted to praise his staff and cooks-all of the people who put it all together to create Weits Café.

Grundy County Historical Society creating genealogy research area SUBMITTED STORY The Grundy County Historical Society was established in 1923. Historic items donated to the Society were displayed in the county courthouse for many years until they opened in a store front on Liberty Street for a few more years. In May 2009, the museum opened in the Canal Port Condominiums. With a generous donation from Ken and Joan Sereno, in 2019 the museum opened an addition that nearly doubled their size and includes an archive and storage areas. The Grundy County Historical Society’s mission is to house, preserve and exhibit objects pertaining to Grundy County and its history. The museum is open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am-3pm and admission is free. One major fundraiser for the past 26 years is the Festival of Trees held on Thanksgiving weekend in conjunction with the Home for the Holidays celebration. All other funding is from donations and memberships in the Historical Society. There are 9 board members, one paid administrative assistant and about 25 regular volunteers. The historical society receives regular donations of historic items
from citizens. New in the last few months include items from Matteson’s Hardware Store back when the store was originally located downtown on Liberty St. until the 1970’s. There is also a display of pottery made by Tom Turner and a display of bricks that he has been collecting in his research on brick factories in Morris. We have a bigger than life size Shabbona done by John McNabb carved from a basswood tree. During the pandemic they had to close a few times and cancel regular meetings and annual meeting with speakers. Those are resuming this spring. A small room in the museum that was never finished is in the process of becoming the genealogy research area with a computer that visitors can access Ancestry.com. That, along with the microfiche of Morris Daily Herald’s, cemetery records, high school yearbooks, plat books, phone directories, etc. and archive files will help people wanting to do genealogy research. The Grundy County Historical Society is already thinking ahead to a celebration in 2023 for their 100th anniversary and the next 100 years.

Morris Country Club’s new bar at The Creek open to public all week By Allison Selk Morris Country Club has been voted best fine dining and golf course in Grundy County for the past eight years, consecutively. Tricia Werden, event coordinator, said customer service sets Morris Country Club apart from other local facilities. “We try to give top-notch service all of the time. We take pride in excellent customer service,” Werden said. “We get a lot of compliments how the staff goes above and beyond.” Morris Country Club was founded in 1924 and has now expanded from the one club, to two, as it acquired Nettle Creek Country Club in 2019. Morris Country Club remains the umbrella company and the two separate clubs are now coined, “The Club” and “The Creek.” The Club remains a private membership club, and memberships allow play and access to both courses seven days a week as well as access to the restaurant and bar at The Club and the bar at The Creek, practice facilities and activities. “It’s great, family friendly and also a place for singles and seniors,” Werden. said. The Creek allows the public access to the bar daily and open play on the golf course on weekends and holidays. Gambling machines took the place of the smaller pro-shop which used to be housed next to the bar for additional entertainment. “The addition of the new bar at The Creek with garage door style walls
that open in the summer months and provide panoramic views of the course is open to the public seven days a week,” Werden said. Morris Country Club can cater banquet needs whether a wedding, private party or dinner, or business meeting for staff or clients as well as golf outings on Mondays at The Club. The Creek can host golf outings seven days a week, with an open tent available in warmer months. Morris County Club 18- hole courses at The Club and The Creek present distinct differences, according to Werden, as The Creek course has flatter architecture and The Club course terrain provides hills and valleys. A new pro-shop was constructed adjacent to the parking lot at The Creek and will be open to the public weekends when golf season starts, a date yet to be set, Werden said. Shoppers will be able to purchase golf needs such as hats, balls, gloves and apparel. April 1, a new range machine will open at The Creek. Golfers can pay with a credit card directly at the machine which the public can use seven days a week, so patrons can practice at their leisure. Werden said this makes a great addition to The Creek because people who may not want to play on the course can still come out and hit range balls for recreation. As of May, one Sunday a month, The Creek will host live entertainment from 5 to 8 p.m. Werden said it will be a great event open to members and the public for live music, food from their food truck and cocktails with a view.

Grundy Bank helps students gain financial skills for adulthood By Allison Selk Grundy Bank, with roots dated back to 1864, prides itself on being a community bank to serve the people of the county and surrounding areas through outreach, donations and upto-date technologies and programs. Being a community bank, Christine Mendez, marketing and sales director, said this year Grundy Bank wanted to get into the local schools more and one way was to became a sponsor of a 3-year financial educational program geared toward high school students. Five schools within the county, Minooka Community High School, Morris Community High School, Seneca High School, Wilmington High School and Reed-Custer High Schools were sponsored by the bank for this program. Mendez said teachers at these respective schools, mostly economics and consumer education, were offered a chance to register for the program which taught students how to budget, borrow, save, spend and set goals. Materials were available online as well as workbooks for the classrooms and teachers were given the opportunity to have Mendez present in the classrooms as well. The interactive online games, Mendez said, showed real life scenarios for students to work through such as a budget, if a car breaks down would repairs or a new vehicle make a smarter choice, or how to move money around from checking to savings and what happens when there is an overdraft. Mendez said of the importance of financial education for students, “Being financially responsible at a younger age will help them when they are in the 20’s buying houses, buying cars at lower interest rates and not paying too much and being more knowledgeable to their finances and saving.” According to teachbanzai.com, over 80,000 teachers and 50 percent of schools in the United States use this financial program designed to, “teach real-world finance and practical life experience.” Grundy bank not only wanted to showcase a new program for students this past year, but also celebrate the youth in the two communities
in which the bank has branches. Mendez and Joe Schmitz, founder of Operation St. Nick in Morris, developed a “$3 for 3-Pointer Program” for Morris Community High School and Wilmington High School athletic departments during the boys and girls varsity basketball season. The Morris girls made 25 3-point shots while boys put up 214 3-point shots for a total of 239 and $717 donated to the athletic department. Wilmington girls shot 30 3-pointers and the boys 64, with a total of 94 shots and $282. New to Grundy Bank Tom Tesdal was new addition to the Grundy Bank team in 2021, with 45 years of banking experience. Tesdal will work as an ambassador of the bank’s commercial and agricultural lending division. In a press release Tesdal said, “The banking world allows us to get involved with people of the community we might not normally meet; Grundy Bank is giving me the opportunity to continue to meet people and give back to the Morris Community.” “Grundy Bank looks forward to working with Tom and helping him create more memories and relationships along with way,” Kevin Olson, president and CEO of Grundy Bank said in a press release. Brittany Herman, commercial banking specialist said coming soon to Grundy Bank in 2022 will be instant issue debit cards, no longer will clients have to wait weeks for a card in the mail, cards will be issues at branch locations; an updated app with new features such as travel alerts where customers can let the bank know through the app that card usage will vary from usual locations and a wheel which tracks where clients spend funds, a benefit to a budget and for business clients, Positive Pay, a service to protect businesses against check fraud. In 2023 a modern website will launch to be Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant and have new features for the hearing and vision impaired, it will be quicker to navigate and more user friendly.

SUBMITTED STORY This year, Fruland Funeral Home celebrates 110 years in the funeral business. Lifelong Morris resident Richard Hexdall has been funeral director of the downtown Morris business since 1972 and owner since 2000, when he purchased it from H. Paul Fruland. Earl Fruland had given the business to his son in 1973. The staff at Fruland includes J. LeRoy Claypool, Paul W. Jung and John Thompson, all assistants to the funeral director. Fruland Funeral Home also added a new face to its staff when Morris Community High School graduate Savannah Strange began working at the funeral home after attending Joliet Junior College and graduating from Worsham College of Mortuary Science. Hexdall and his staff are active members of the community and are committed to providing funeral services to families of all faiths and nationalities. Their commitment to helping families in need includes individualized attention and answering calls personally. Clients of Fruland’s may be assured that the staff understands their needs and respects their considerations, and they will feel comfortable and confident with the funeral home’s ability to carry out a loved one’s last wishes. Fruland Funeral Home offers a variety of options to fit families’ requests and needs, including traditional fu-
nerals, graveside services, customized caskets and rental caskets for cremation services. With the popularity of cremations, Fruland now offers several options to families. They carry a large selection of urns and mementos in many shapes, sizes and colors to suit individual tastes. Also offered are options of keepsake jewelry such as rings, crosses, hearts, bracelets, necklaces and rose stems. Personalized caskets and memorial service selections are also available. Fruland Funeral Home offers pre-planning, so that clients may select the type of funeral and end-of-life wishes they desire. Planning ahead of time can also take some of the burden off families. Pre-planning a funeral may be done at a client’s own pace, with ample time to consider the pros and cons of each option. Many say they have peace of mind knowing plans are already in place. Pre-need funds are placed in trust in an Illinois bank or other financial institution. Visit the Fruland Funeral Home website for more information about pre-planning. Many updates have been made to the interior and exterior of the business in recent years, including improved accessibility for the handicapped. Fruland Funeral Home is located at 121 W. For as long as modern medicine has been in practice, primary care has been vital in addressing physical concerns and health-related issues. Often viewed as the patient’s most trusted medical professional, a primary care provider guides patients through a wide variety of health care needs, usually for routine and traditional reasons. But the catch is, mental health treatment is usually addressed in another setting. Seeing this obstacle, Dr. Jennifer Thomas, a board-certified family medicine physician who practices at the Braidwood and Gardner Healthcare Centers of Morris Hospital, embraced the opportunity to break new ground by spearheading a new, integrated behavioral health program at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers that incorporates the whole person – both mind and body – into a primary care provider’s realm so treatment for depression and anxiety can come as easily to a patient as it does for a cough or earache. “It’s really a practice transformation. It’s a different philosophy for everyone – for the healthcare system, for the primary care provider, and even the patient,” says Dr. Thomas, director of Morris Hospital’s Integrated Behavioral Health Program. “Our new approach empowers people to have an open, compassionate conversation that allows primary care to address mental health needs.” Specifically, behavioral health is the connection between the health and well-being of the mind and body. This involves several aspects of life, what we eat and drink, activities and habits, and a variety of mental health conditions. The problem is, only 43 percent of the 44.7 million adults with mental health disorders receive treatment. And the need and demand is only increasing, including in our local communities. “The need for behavioral health treatment is high,” says Dr. Thomas. “While the primary care provider can tackle and treat many of these issues, traditionally, mental health has been very siloed from physical health in our medical health system.” Currently available at eight of Morris Hospital’s primary care locations, Integrated Behavioral Health Care is structured from the Collaborative Care model developed at the University of Washington, a national leader on behavioral health integration that has helped Morris Hospital build its program. This model establishes three team members for the patient’s behavioral health care: a primary

care provider, a behavioral health care coordinator, and a consulting psychiatrist. Together, the team is able to provide behavioral health treatment for patients of all ages in the primary care setting, addressing mental health concerns including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and beyond. “One of the biggest benefits of treating mental health in the primary care setting is the team based approach,” Dr. Thomas says. “Patients really appreciate their providers communicating and working together. It helps you feel seen and heard and like you’re getting the best possible care.” “The public has embraced integrated behavioral health with open arms and excitement,” Dr. Thomas adds. “I’ve had many patients tell me they wish we had this years ago. It helps you be able to start the process for the patient and have that conversation and empower patients to talk to their primary care provider about mental health. We can address a lot of things right here in the primary care office.
It’s just a really great opportunity to engage patients in a healthcare setting that they are already comfortable and familiar with.” The program is currently available through primary care providers at select Morris Hospital locations, but Dr. Thomas envisions a future where mental health concerns are treated through primary care providers just as easily as any other health concern. “I hope to see in the future that behavioral health integration is part of really great primary care,” Dr. Thomas says. “You would go in for your blood pressure checks or school physicals, and it would coincide with mental health screening and mental health treatment. We are proud to be leading the way in behavioral health integration in Illinois.” Morris Hospital’s Integrated Behavioral Health Program is available in primary care settings in Channahon, Gardner, Minooka, Morris, Ottawa, and Seneca. Get Rid of Spider and Varicose Veins Now! At Eterna Med Spa, our goal is to provide minimally invasive vein treatments for vein problems with little to no down time
Eterna Med Spa -
Things you should know about varicose veins SUBMITTED STORY Eterna Med Spa has been treating spider and varicose veins since 2008 with various minimally invasive treatment options. When it comes to varicose veins, putting off medical attention is not an option. That’s because left untreated, they can worsen over time. Just some of the symptoms associated with varicose veins include swelling, aching, cramping, fatigue, heaviness, itching and burning. In more serious situations, varicose vein disease can lead to the formation of a blood clot. Here are three things Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, wants you to know about varicose veins and their treatment:
1. Modern treatments mean no downtime
There are several effective options for combatting the condition, including endovenous laser treatment, sclerotherapy, and microphlebectomy. They can be done in-office under local anesthesia. That means no downtime for the patient. “After your treatment you walk out of your appointment and encouraged to walk a lot through the day,” Malinowski said.
• Laser spider vein treatment • Sclerotherapy • Microphlebectomy • Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA)

2. Support hose are a must
Compression stockings, which come in a variety of styles and colors, are designed to exert pressure on the legs in order to decrease swelling caused by varicose veins. The risk of the treatment failing increases dramatically if the patient is not compliant with their compression stockings. “And patients shouldn’t wait until the day of your treatment to try them on,” Malinowski said. “Wear them a couple of times before your treatment.” There are many different options in styles and color. The experienced Eterna staff can guide patients in choosing the best fit.
3. Don’t wait

Dr. George Roebuck Family Eyecare provides eyecare updates for 2022 SUBMITTED STORY “We have a number of new products that have been approved this year” says Dr. Roebuck, a local optometrist in downtown Morris. Note they have all been shown to work as expected and proven effective by the FDA. Here is a list of the most noteworthy products. VUITY Eye Drops, help people to read without their reading glasses. Are you 40 or 50 years old and wearing reading glasses when you need to read? Vuity Eye Drops treat age-related blurry near vision in adults. It does it by primarily reducing the pupil size to help you focus up close. You use 1 drop in each eye daily. It lasts for 8 to 10 hours, and is the first and only FDA approved prescription eye drop to treat blurry near vision, and reduce the need for bifocals or reading glasses. Other companies will be coming out with other treatments in the next few years, but this one is a good choice if you don’t want to be so dependent on your reading glasses. You need a prescription, so see your eye doctor to get a prescription to try it. Upneeq Eye Drops, help patients with droopy eyelids. As we get older, our eyelids lose their elasticity and start to droop, making us look tired or sleepy. Droopy eyelids interfere with reading and driving if you have to work at keeping your eyelids open. So, if a patient says that they aren’t seeing well at night and their eyelids are drooping, I have the patient look at themselves in the mirror, and run and get a sample for then to try. I will put a drop in each eye and then do the office call or eye exam. After the exam is done, I have them look back in the mirror and many patients are surprised by how much better their eyelids look, or by how much more they are seeing. I even asked a few of my relatives be “Guinea pigs” to be sure this product works and they love it. Tyrvaya Nasal Spray, is a new treatment for dry eyes. Dry eyes are often a winter problem where your eyes feel like they are full of sand or grit, along with dryness and eye pain or irritation. If you don’t like to put
eyedrops in your eyes, or if eyedrops don’t do enough, now we have nasal spray. It stimulates the trigeminal nerve that runs from your eyes down to your nose. When it’s stimulated, your eyes know to tear more, and your nose may run a little more. By activating tear production your eyes feel better. It’s so new I only have a few patients using it, but it has possibilities. I am excited for patients to try it. Bandage Contact Lenses, are an older treatment for irritated eyes, but I am surprised that several of my patients have never heard of them. My Mother-in-Law developed a very irritated dry eye this last winter. Eye drops were just not doing enough. So, I put a bandage contact lens in her eye and had her put Oasis Tears over the contact lens every 2 hours while she was awake. The bandage contact holds extra moisture against the eye, and gives the eye an extra chance to heal. After 3 days I removed the contact and she had beautiful new skin under the contact and the eye felt so much better. Bandage Contact Lenses are also great for scratched eyes, and really help after taking a big piece of steel out of an eye. If you wear a ban-
dage lens, you heal twice as fast and have 50% less pain during recovery. Eyeglasses are still the backbone of optometry. The new color of the year is a very light see-through gray. Very light transparent pastels are also popular for the ladies. Perfectly clear plastic has been trendy for
the last 2 years, but is now on the way out. And the larger slightly oversized look is the most popular. Dr. Roebuck practices in downtown Morris. He can be reached at 815-942-1951 for an appointment. Check out his website at www.drgeorgeroebuck.com

The first free-standing hospice inpatient unit in the State of Illinois is now the largest. After a four-year fundraising and construction project, Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care has opened a completely-renovated and expanded 20-bed facility that offers patients exceptional end-of-life care in a family-focused setting. According to Lightways CEO Mary Kay Sheehan, the most common first reaction from visitors and families is surprise. “People expect this to be a very institutional setting. They are surprised and heartened by the look and feel of the unit. The entire facility is light-filled and uplifting, providing calmness for patients, families and visitors during a difficult time.” The majority of Lightways hospice patients are supported in their home, assisted living or nursing facility with staff local to the area. However, the inpatient unit is available to those who need a higher level of care to control pain and symptoms. The 30,000 square foot facility in Joliet offers warm and welcoming spaces for patients and families. The unique design and décor earned the organization honors in the 2021 Senior Housing News Architecture & Design Awards. This is an annual competition that recognizes cutting-edge design, excellence, and innovation in senior living. Each patient suite is set up for maximum comfort and ease of care. The
patient bed is oversized. There is a fully-accessible washroom and a large television with streaming services. There is ample seating for visitors and a pull-out queen-sized bed for those staying overnight. A small refrigerator, storage and special shelves to display photos and mementos add to the comfort. All patient suites include operable windows, and French doors that are wide enough to allow the patient to access a private patio from the comfort of his or her bed. “Our families love being able to open the window or go outside when weather permits,” said Sheehan. The inpatient unit allows 24-hour visitation, so many families stay with their loved one around the clock. To accommodate that, Lightways offers family-focused amenities including a family kitchen and dining room where food, beverages and snacks are available 24 hours a day and private family suites for rest, showers or uninterrupted family meetings. For Mary Kay Sheehan and her team, the patient’s goals and wishes are paramount. “At Lightways, we know how important time is. Our devoted team listens to your needs and works with you to develop the best plan of care. Our goal for all patients and families is simple: Time together with less pain and more joy.” Anyone seeking information about Lightways services is encouraged to call 815-740-4104 or visit lightways.org

SUBMITTED STORY In February of this year, Silver Cross Hospital observed the 10th anniversary of its New Lenox campus and achieved many milestones and firsts along the way. In the last decade, Silver Cross has had 253,000 patient admissions, 752,000 emergency visits, 2.8 million outpatient visits and delivered 28,000 babies at its New Lenox campus! “What was once a cornfield has been transformed into a vibrant, ever-growing regional medical center allowing us to focus on our mission to improve the health of those we serve and advance wellness in the community,” explains Ruth Colby, President and Chief Executive Officer of Silver Cross. In the past decade, Silver Cross has partnered with several of Chicago’s leading academic medical centers so residents wouldn’t have to travel far for cancer care, advanced pediatrics care, rehabilitation, or stroke care. The hospital started the Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery, a robotic surgery program that today is Chicagoland’s busiest and most successful. In 2019, Silver Cross introduced an open-heart surgery and structural heart program, and now has an expansive lung cancer program. Also, in 2019, through its partnership with Silver Oaks Behavioral Hospital, Silver Cross helped bring needed mental
health services to the area. In 2020 and 2021, Silver Cross opened two urgent care centers, one in New Lenox and one in Mokena; opened a 16-bed observation unit; debuted its state-of-the-art heart care expansion that features two dedicated heart operating rooms and a hybrid room for minimally invasive transcatheter aortic valve replacement; and became the first hospital in Illinois to use highly advanced imaging technology that creates a 3D model of the heart arteries during an angiogram. In early March of this year, the hospital also added the Ion robot to its expansive fleet of robotic technology within the Midwest Institute for Robotic Surgery at Silver Cross. The new robotic-assisted platform, called ION by Intuitive (which also produces the da Vinci robot, well-known for many years at Silver Cross), uses an ultra-thin, highly maneuverable robotic catheter to reach parts of the lung not possible through a standard biopsy, allowing for lung cancer diagnosis sooner and with greater accuracy than ever before. Also in March, Silver Cross Hospital’s Level 2E Special Care Nursery officially moved into the space that eventually will be home to its Amy, Matthew and Jay Vana Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, pending approval from the state. The proposed NICU will ensure that babies with special needs, including those born as early as 22
weeks, can receive all the care they need under one roof – and keep families together close to home. Equipped with the latest technology and specially trained nurses and therapists, the new unit is adjacent to the hospital’s Women and Infant Services Birthing Center and features 24 private, single-family rooms. The design is modeled after the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago. It will also be staffed by a team of Lurie neonatologists around the clock and supported by Lurie neonatal nurse practitioners. What’s more, Silver Cross also has several leading maternal-fetal medicine physicians on staff to provide care for women with complicated or high-risk pregnancies.
Nationally Recognized for Excellence Silver Cross has also earned numerous national awards for safety, quality and patient experience over the years, including a historic first with the “Triple Crown” for healthcare in 2021. The “Triple Crown” included a 5-Star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, a 100 Top Hospital recognition and Straight A’s for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group, putting Silver Cross among a very exclusive group of U.S. hospitals achieving this level of excellence in patient safety, patient care, patient outcomes and patient experience.
