BNC says no to conference hoops slate

BY ERIC INGLES eingles@shawmedia.com There might be high school basketball in Illinois this school year or there might not be, but if and when teams in the Big Northern Conference take the court, there will not be a BNC title to play for.

The conference announced Nov. 6 that it will not hold a conference schedule in either boys or girls basketball. The decision to play any games will be up to the individual district.

“It’s out of my control, out of our players’ control,” Rock Falls boys basketball coach Zach Sandrock said. “Obviously we want to have a basketball season, but we want to do so in a safe manner. Hopefully at some point that comes to be and we can have a season and those seniors get to play.”

For coaches, and even athletic directors, the decision is out of their hands, having to wait on those above them in the district to weigh in.

“I think there’s quite a few different views within the different schools and communities,” Dixon athletic director Jared Shaner said. “Ultimately, it will be a school-by-school decision. At some schools, that will come from the super-

intendent, in others it will be a board of education decision.”

That will be the situation at Dixon, where the board could decide as early as next week how to proceed.

Basketball players and coaches were taken on a roller coaster ride of sorts last week, as the IHSA and the governor’s office made conflicting statements about whether or not practices would begin as planned November 16.

The IHSA reshuffling of the sports calendar in July moved football, boys soccer and volleyball to the spring, while leaving basketball relatively untouched.

But with COVID-19 cases rising in recent months, the basketball season began to seem more and more jeopardy.

The announcement by the BNC comes one day after the Diocese of Rockford, which oversees six Catholic high schools including Sterling Newman, announced its schools would not be competing in boys or girls basketball due to COVID-19.

“Everybody was taken back by the decision,” Newman athletic director Mike Papoccia said. “But, even though it sounds like it’s against the kids, it’s for the kids to keep them safe. I don’t know if they’re going to try in January to see if this thing dies down.”

Until then, basketball teams get to play the waiting game.

Papoccia said the IHSA is looking for a place to schedule basketball if enough schools opt not to play, but that could result in basketball and another sport, such as football, being scheduled at the same time, which for a school as small as Newman – with rosters packed with multi-sport athletes – that would be a tough thing to ask of them.

There may be games, but there will be no BNC crown to play for. Papoccia said the Three Rivers Conference is expected to make a decision next week on whether or not to play a conference schedule once games resume.

BRIEFS Mobile Food Pantry in Mt. Morris on Monday, Nov. 16 Loaves & Fish Food Pantry, alongside Northern Illinois Food Bank, will host a Mobile Food Pantry on Monday, Nov. 16, from 1-2:30 p.m.

The truck will be located at Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren, 409 West Brayton Road, Mt. Morris. This mobile pantry is open anyone in Ogle County.

This is an “extra” food distribution. Loaves & Fish Pantry serves families in Mt. Morris and Leaf River in need of food, and is open on the first and third Thursdays from 4:30 – 7 p.m. and second and fourth Mondays from 2-4:30 p.m. You do not need a referral, and no proof of income is required.

The pantry is located in the lower level of the Mt. Morris Church of the Brethren, 409 W. Brayton Road, Mt. Morris.

Drive-thru meal is Nov. 14 The Leaf River Lions Club will be holding another “Drive Thru” Brat and Hot Dog meal on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The drive thru will be located at the old fire station next to the Bertolet Memorial building on Second Street. Cost for the meal is strictly a donation only as there will not be a charge.

The Lions are grateful for the wonderful turnout at the previous drive thru.

The profit from this drive thru will go to the Homeless Veterans Drop-In Center in Rockford.

The Leaf River Lions have been taking a meal to the center, but since the COVID-19 has come along the center requests only cash for them to use as best needed.

The center would normally provide a noon meal and evening lunch to several needy Veterans in the surrounding communities.

They also have clothing and some canned goods veterans can choose from. If a Veteran finds housing they also help with furniture to be used in the house. Please help the Lions support such a worthy cause for our needy veterans!

Lion workers will be wearing their masks as they prepare the brats and hot dogs. Just get in your car or truck and drive thru, say HI and get a complimentary meal. There will be a donation canister available for anyone that wishes.

At this time, it does not look likely the breakfasts will resume this year. Keep looking as another drive thru could be coming!

Blood drive on Nov. 23 The Leaf River United Methodist Church will host a Community Blood Drive on Monday, Nov. 23. Staff from the Rock River Valley Blood Center will draw blood between 12 - 6 p.m. Donors need to be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. POLO INITIATIVE

On Saturday, the not-for-profit organization made 24 insulated winter shelters for cats.

Anyone in Polo who cares for community cats and could use a shelter or two can contact Project Humane Polo by email at projecthumanepolo@gmail.com or leave a voicemail at 815-627-6508.

Project Humane Polo has partnered with nonprofit Happy Tails Humane Society in Rock Falls in an effort to help feral cats in Polo and provide spay and neutering services and veterinary care for a fee of $32 per cat.

The Polo City Council voted in October not to partner with Project Humane Polo on operations for a trap neuter release program to curb the city’s feral cat population.

The group made its proposal at a September meeting after members became concerned over a recent city ordinance that limits when cats can be fed and how many can be owned.

The city made its decision citing liability concerns about partnering with the group, but said it would still refer citizens to the organization.

The group said in September it has 96 volunteers and has raised $400 in funds.

PUBLIC VOICE White Oak Cemetery White Oak has about 55 veterans of the Civil War. The stone in the picture sits at the front of Chattanooga, Tennessee by Lookout Mountain, where the battle changed the outcome of the Civil War. You will notice the stone credits the 104th Infantry of Illinois.

The death toll was so severe that General Ulysses S. Grant immediately instituted the day of national thanksgiving and prayer with his announcement that the Confederate Army had been beaten.

Lookout Mountain is very high and straight up, where the position of the confederate army. The federal climbed almost straight up the mountain for battle.

The cost of death was so severe that General Bragg was relieved of his duty.

Look at the cost of our democracy and to protect our way of living.

What about Iwo Jima. The first flag raising atop Mount Suribachi was Feb. 23, 1945. The U.S. Forces were supposed

to take the island and overrun it in three days. But it took 31 days of pure death and destruction.

Just think of what some veterans went through to protect our country.

I don’t even want to talk about Korea.

Can you believe 25 below zero and a horrible wind blowing at you called a blow torch of death? Did you ever think that there is a reason why some veterans won’t even talk about their horrible duty?

Remember the veterans and don’t forget our wonderful United States and make sure you fly the American Flag!

Area veterans were not able to attend schools this year for Veteran’s Day as usual, but Oregon School District music teacher Miles Beske worked hard to make it feel like any other year for them.

Oregon Elementary School and David L. Rahn Middle School broadcasted a live stream performance on YouTube on Nov. 11.

“Just to watch a veteran tear up at the music and poems, it just won’t be the same,” Beske said. “I wanted to still offer them something . We’ve done this for 30 years. Usually there’s someone local that gives a speech and each one talks about their experience.

It’s phenomenal for kids.”

From 9:45 a.m. until 10:10 a.m. on Wednesday, the bands were scheduled to perform the star spangled banner, a Pearl Harbor hymn and the different armed services marches. Taps was also played at the end of the show. Students spoke about each song performed.

Beske was unsure how many students he would have for the performance due to COVID-19. This week, he was missing nine kids from his brass section. He usually has 60-65 students. Students will have an entire day with Veteran’s Day themes that will end with the live stream performance.

Miles Beske directed the fifth grade band in front of a packed house at the Blackhawk Center during the 2018 Band Extravaganza. Beske organized a virtual Veteran’s Day performance for Nov. 11.

“Missing AOP was huge,” Beske said. “We did our own version of that at the stadium. There weren’t high school halftimes this fall. The Christmas concert can’t happen because it’s indoors. It may be virtual or live streamed.”

DONATIONS SOUGHT

Oregon VFW seeks donations for Christmas baskets drive

Oregon VFW post 8739 will be assembling and delivering food baskets for Christmas to families and individuals who are in need in the Oregon area.

“This has been a tough year for everyone with the COVID-19 which has led to lost jobs and sick families,” said VFW Commander Bob Coulter. “We are asking those who donate to this purpose to please be generous this year.”

Coulter said the Post normally provides at least 120 baskets.

“We feel the number will be much larger this year,” he said.

“We want to send a heartfelt thanks

to those who donate. It truly makes people happy.”

Families or individuals in need must call the VFW Post (815-7326851) between 3 and 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Each individual or family representative must call for themselves.

An adult must be home on Dec. 19 to receive the basket. Deliveries will start around 8:30 a.m. and should conclude by noon.

The VFW will start taking phone calls on Nov. 16, The VFW Post is also seeking volunteers to help deliver the baskets. Call 815-7326851 to volunteer.

COVID-19 UPDATES

389 new cases in a week; Whiteside also sees major increase

The Ogle County Health Department reported 40 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Nov. 10, for a new total of 1,930.

One hundred and forty eight cases were reported Saturday through Monday. 389 new cases have come in the past week. Ages and locations of the individuals that test positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

Recoveries of documented cases stand at 1,407, with 107 new ones reported Tuesday.

The county’s ninth death was reported on Tuesday, a male in his 80s. Its eighth came on Oct. 29. The county’s seventh death came on Oct. 16.

The Illinois Department of Public

Health site said Tuesday that there are 757 cases in the 61068 zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley’s zip code had 88 cases according to the IDPH site with Byron at 384 cases and Davis Junction with 108 cases.

Other zip code totals were: Oregon 161; Mt. Morris 85 cases; Polo 95; Leaf River 45; and Forreston 75.

The Whiteside County Health Department on Tuesday announced 102 new cases following Monday’s new total of 79 new cases which included 13 people under the age of 20, nine in their 20s, 12 in their 30s, 11 in their 40s, 15 in their 50s, seven in their 60s, two in their 70s and 10 over the age of 80.

Whiteside County also had 46 recoveries.

For the week ending Nov. 8, there were 520 cases in Whiteside County, up from 431 the previous week,

with most age groups showing slight increases. The 70-79 age group saw a decrease from 40 new cases to 35, while the 80+ age group stayed steady at 27 new cases.

Lee County had 35 new cases from Sunday which it reported on Monday, of which 13 came from an outbreak at Dixon Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. In addition, Lee County reported 67 new cases and 27 recoveries on Monday.

Ogle County announced 148 new cases for Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Whiteside County has had 2,498 cases and 49 deaths. Lee County has had 1,165 cases, 701 recoveries and four deaths. Carroll County, which did not report updated statistics on Monday, has had 653 cases, 452 recoveries and 19 deaths.

go counties) has seen eight days of positivity increases and nine days of hospital admission increases. The region’s positivity rate increased from 16.8% to 17.6%. This remains the highest rate of any of the state’s 11 regions. Currently, 31% of medical/surgical beds are available and 39% of ICU beds.

The region’s counties that are reporting the highest positivity rates are Carroll (21.2%), Boone (21%), Whiteside (21.6%), Stephenson (19.1%), and Ogle (18.7%). DeKalb County’s positivity rate increased from 12.1% to 12.6%.

The seven-day rolling average for hospitalizations for COVID-like illness in Region 1 has tripled in 30 days, from 9 to 27.

To get back to the standard Phase 4 restrictions, the region will need to maintain an average positivity rate of less than or equal to 6.5% over a three-day period.

Illinois had 12,623 new cases and 79 deaths on Tuesday. The state has seen 511,183 cases and 10,289 deaths.

LOCAL HISTORY

Lafayette Township had three one room schools Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK Lafayette Township is one of the six half-size townships with approximately 18 square miles in Ogle County.

Lafayette Township borders Taylor, Flagg and Pine Rock Townships.

The 1910 Census showed a population of 170 and 72 housing units.

Lafayette takes its name from the grove which lies near its center.

Lafayette Grove located in the center of Lafayette Township was given its name as was Washington Grove, which is across the road in Pine Rock after two early leaders of our country.

The first settlers arrived at Lafayette Grove in the spring of 1835 taking advantage of its spring fed creek and the native hardwood trees. This is a rural township where most residents own their homes and tend to be conservative.

In the early days Flagg Road was known as the State Road between Chicago, Grand Detour and Clinton, Iowa on to the far West. This early State Road crossed east to west through Lafayette Township from Chicago and crossed the Rock River at Grand Detour at the Upper Ferry.

There were two ferries in Grand Detour. The lower ferry was on the route from Oregon to Dixon.

Many Ogle County Townships contained one or more small towns with a grocery store, post office, blacksmith shop, etc. The residents of Lafayette Township mainly did their shopping etc. at Ashton located in Lee County.

At his home located on Flagg Road Russell Tanner added a room to his home which served as a small grocery store and post office.

The stagecoach from Chicago to Grand Detour supplied the groceries and mail. He came to Illinois in 1855.

He married Patty Phillips in 1834.

Lafayette had three one room schools. The first school was located on the Chicago to Grand Detour Road later used as a stagecoach route.

This school named Lafayette Grove School was built in 1836. It was the first log cabin school building erected for the purpose in Ogle County.

until her marriage to Barton H. Cartwright who was a Methodist Circuit Rider in 1839.

Barton Cartwright was the father of Judge James Henry Cartwright from Oregon , who served on the Illinois Supreme court for 19 years.

In 1861 the Lafayette Grove School was replaced by a school located one mile west on Prairie Road, named Prairie Star School. Today a large stone school marker marks the location of Ogle County’s first school building.

This stone is located in Lafayette Grove. The first school teacher

Laura C. Vogt wrote “Readin’, Ritin’, Rithmetic and the Regulators, the four R’s, dominated the lives of the settlers in southern Ogle County during the 1830’s and 1840’s.

John Weatherington from Lafayette Township was one of the Regulators who visited the suspected Banditti Outlaws with a long thorny stick evicting many of them following his first visit.”

Fred Kurth’s Lafayette Band Uniform and his bugle are located at

the Ogle County Historical Museum.

Fred passed away at the Rochelle Hospital at age 78, 1966 and is buried at the Ashton Cemetery.

John Sanford operated a 15 acre tree farm. The yoke carrying a replica of the Liberty Bell at Knott’s Berry Resort in California came from a red elm tree from his tree farm.

The log was sawed at the Sinnissippi Sawmill and shipped to California. This one-half township has an interesting history and today two heavily traveled roads are Flagg Road and State Route 38.

I am told that the mask I have on does not protect me but it protects the other guy. My droplets cannot get through to other guy. But if the other guy does not have on a mask, then his droplets can get through my mask to infect me.

That is really hard to figure out or understand for many people. I would be inclined to say, “Forget the whole thing and just stay home and do not let anyone in your house!”

But if that was the case, then we would be nearly nine months confined to our home and that does not seem realistic.

We were tested a week ago at KSB and our test results were negative. We are just now out of quarantine and we have survived.

Cheri, our daughter-in-law ended up with COVID pneumonia and probably would have been hospitalized but there was no room for her.

Finally yesterday she was better and we are all relived.

The rest of the family who tested positive had very few symptoms and quickly were through the virus. It is very strange stuff.

when during all this Bruce and Steve headed for Winston-Salem on a Wednesday for a golf outing with grandson Kyle who lives in North Carolina.

Kenny, another grandson, was flying in from Austin, Texas. They were all going to have a great time golfing together.

Steve and Bruce even stayed in a motel on the way down. They kept masks on while driving but shared a room. They were 15 minutes from Kyle’s house when Cheri called to say she was positive with COVID. The guys simply turned the car around and drove back to Illinois without ever seeing Kyle and family.

The next day after they got back Steve got sick and he tested positive with the virus. Bruce however, never came down with the virus and he tested negative. Strange stuff! Does it pick and

choose?

I had planned to go to the library to research the old Edgewood Golf Course until the virus quarantine stopped me. I needed to confirm some numbers from an article in Dixon Telegraph on March 4, 1938. I had been looking for more information on the old golf course and here was a great article.

The problem was that the article sent over email was very difficult to read. I did transcribe it with a magnifying glass and could figure out most of it. But the numbers were difficult to see.

The article was reflecting back on the very beginning and it looked like the year was 1935 but I want to make certain I have the correct year so I will see what I can find in an old Tri-County.

Then Noralee Gray dropped off some old papers and one of them was 1942. There in the sports column was more information on the old Edgewood.

The column was written by “Jack.” Was that Jack Terry since the picture by the column looked like him?

More digging to do.

They had had a big square dance at Edgewood so they did more than golf. I need to get into the old newspapers to find out what all was going on and who was writing the column.

SPORTS COLUMN

High school sports should not be this complicated W ith high-school winter sports being put on hold, it’s getting harder and harder to find anything to write about.

So far, Lena-Winslow is the only area school to approve basketball. The next closest ones are Sherrard and Yorkville Christian. It’s going to make it tough for scheduling, that’s for sure.

The Big Northern decided not to have conference games. But, schools could decide on their own if they want to play.

The NUIC will be exploring its options sometime this week. If the league follows suit with Le-Win, they would be the center of attention for basketball in Illinois.

That’s because hardly any schools are willing to go against our governor’s wishes, though the IHSA gave a green light to play.

This whole subject crosses political, health and legal issues and quite frankly, appears to be too much of a burden to deal with. High-school sports weren’t meant to be this complicated.

On another non-related topic, reports have surfaced that Mendota is exploring options to leave the Big Northern for the Three Rivers conference.

How the mighty have fallen.

There was a time when Mendota was a power in football and basketball, competing in the NCIC

against the likes of Geneseo and Rochelle in football and LaSalle-Peru and Ottawa in basketball.

However, like many towns in rural areas, enrollment and demographics changed.

If they are admitted in the Three Rivers, they will join former NCIC members Princeton, Kewanee and Hall Twp, along with longtime members like Sterling Newman, Erie-Prophetstown, Morrison and Fulton.

That is if Morrison and Fulton are still in the Three Rivers. There had been talk of those two looking at the NUIC. Again, all of this gets so complicated.

Getting back to Mendota, I sense they never felt like they belonged in the Big Northern. Geographically, they were at the far southeastern corner of the league and really didn’t have any sort of natural rivalry with anyone.

Their sports programs have also regressed substantially, likely attributed to changing demographics.

With the Big Northern at an odd number of 11, losing Mendota would be no great loss, other than in football where Rockford Christian doesn’t compete.

Due to safety concerns, the IHSA did not put on a state cross country meet. But, a private company decided to do so.

It was held this past weekend near Peoria under brilliant weather conditions and reports were quite favorable.

I asked good friend and local authorities on cross country, Bruce Johnson of Winnebago, his impressions.

“The meet was run incredibly smooth and professional by Shazam Racing,” Johnson said. “The most common comment I heard was why couldn’t the IHSA have done this at Detweiler, limiting fans, if necessary.”

One major reason is that the private sector is much more efficient in delivery of goods and services than the public.

If there would have been a private entity willing to do it, an unofficial state golf meet could have also been held.

Duty, determination, perseverance for Bowker Mt. Morris veteran soldiering on after Vietnam service

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@shawmedia.com A quick glance around John Bowker III’s room in rural Mt. Morris in the early 1960s revealed what career path he hoped to take.

Bowker was a model airplane enthusiast, and he pieced together planes of all shapes and sizes. His long-range goal was to become an Air Force pilot.

After graduating from Mt. Morris High School at age 17 in 1966 (he had skipped kindergarten, beginning first grade at age 5), Bowker traveled to sol to take a physical and various written tests for the United States Air Force Academy.

He aced the tests.

“A major came to my house and talked to my folks and said, ‘You must be a test man because your grades in high school don’t reflect how well you did on our tests,’” Bowker said.

The physical, however, proved to be an issue. Air Force pilots need to have at least 20/20 vision. Bowker tested at 20/40 and would soon need to get glasses.

The Air Force offered a waiver in which he could eventually become a navigator in a plane, but he couldn’t actually fly it.

“It just deflated me,” Bowker said.

“I was heartbroken.”

Bowker worked at the Kable Printing Co. in Mt. Morris for a year after graduating from high school, and when he turned 18 in February of 1967, signed up for the draft.

By June of that year, he was at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri for Army basic training. Bowker’s father, John Jr., had been an Army man and served in Italy in World War II. “My dad preached to me to go into the Navy,” Bowker said. “You’d have clean sheets to sleep on every night.”

Alas, Bowker didn’t have a choice in the matter and ended up in the Army, just like his father.

“When they draft you, whatever service has the highest volume that they need, that’s the service you go into,” Bowker said. “That’s how the draft worked.”

“I’ve been a leader – I’m not a follower,” Bowker said. “Leading men just seemed to come easy for me. It was a take-charge type of thing.”

Three weeks of temporary duty at Fort Knox, Kentucky, were next for Bowker. There, he was trained as a driver for armored personnel carriers, a duty he figured he’d do in Vietnam.

After arriving in Vietnam on Jan. 10, 1968, however, he became an infantryman and was assigned to Bravo Company, 3rd Batallion, 39th Infantry of the 9th Infantry Division.

“The war had escalated so much by then,” Bowker said. “By the end of 1968, we had over 500,000 men in Vietnam. It was the year that was the worst statistically for us, as far as getting men killed and wounded.”

Less than a month into a 13-month tour of duty in Vietnam, Bowker found himself in the middle of the action. The Tet Offensive was initiated by North Vietnamese troops and Viet Cong in late January.

“I celebrated my 19th birthday fighting in the streets of Ben Tre during the Tet Offensive,” Bowker

said. “I wasn’t even in the country a month and I was in heavy battle.”

Another offensive came 5 months later, and there was one particularly fierce battle over a key bridge, the Y Bridge,south of Saigon near the city of Cho Lon. “We were there for 12 days and 12 nights, fighting in the streets of Cho Lon,” Bowker said. “Right across the river, you could see Saigon lit up like a Christmas tree. We were over there, fighting day and night, house to house, in Cho Lon.” Casualties were heavy on both sides.

“I went in with 10 men and came out with two, me and my machine gunner,” Bowker said. “He was a Black man by the name of Maiden from Texas. I remember him vividly because we were the two that got out of there from my squad. There’s nothing worse than house-to-house fighting. Nothing. Nothing.”

Making matters more complicated for soldiers were rules that had to be followed. There were areas in South Vietnam where anything goes, so to speak, in regards to fighting, but also areas that were non free-fire zones, in an attempt to protect civilian lives.

American troops had to have per-

mission to attack from their superiors, and needed to have wounded or dead soldiers from being fired upon in order to retaliate.

“That made it very difficult for us,” Bowker said.

Also making it difficult was determining who they were fighting.

North Vietnamese regular troops were the toughest to deal with.

“That far south, they were few and far between, but they had infiltrated the country,” Bowker said. “North Vietnamese regulars, they’re right there and they’re staying there and they’re fighting your ass till the end.”

There were also Viet Cong troops, who were sneakier.

“Viet Cong would hit us and then vanish,” Bowker said. “They would always be set up with bunkers that were dug into the ground, but they were always set up with their backs to a river. That was their escape route. They’d stay and fight for a while, but when we got artillery support and brought it down on them, and we’d go in, they weren’t there anymore. They were gone. They escaped. The Viet Cong would hit and run. The North Vietnamese regulars would stay and fight.”

The Vietnam War was one steeped in frustration. Soldiers like Bowker did their duty to the best of their ability, but felt held back at times in their ability to fight North Vietnamese forces.

Meanwhile, in the United States, protesters questioned why the United States was there to begin with.

“None of us really questioned it,” Bowker said.

“We felt that we were doing a service to our country, and we were proud to do it. Most of us were 18, 19 years old, and we took it as an honor to be representing our country. As the war progressed and information was coming back from the states about the riots and the protests that were going on, our attitudes started to change.”

Bowker was honorably discharged from the Army on Jan. 27, 1969, and caught a plane – a “Freedom Flight,” they were called – back to the United States. He arrived, in uniform, in Oakland, California, then made his way to the San Francisco airport for a flight back home. It was a miserable experience.

“When I got to the airport, there were protesters,” Bowker said. “Some had the indecency to call us ‘baby killers’ and we were spat upon. No physical activity took place, but the humiliation of being called ‘baby killers’ and being spat upon coming back into our own country, feeling that we had done what needed to be done or what was expected of us as soldiers, it was very humiliating. It was disheartening.”

Back home in Mt. Morris, there was a different vibe.

“I was among friends and family,” Bowker said.

“It was respectful and very warm.”

Bowker earned the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Air Medal, the Bronze Star Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his service.

He would go on to work a variety of jobs as a civilian. He went back to the printing plant in Mt. Morris, and was an apprentice photo engraver.

That job lasted just 8 months, as a supervisor took exception to a request to listen to Christmas music during a 4-hour Christmas Eve shift.

Bowker then worked for the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad for 6 years as a detective, patrolling the rails from Chicago to New Orleans. He had full police powers in the towns he visited, and carried a .357 Magnum. It was dangerous work.

Nurse helps two accident victims while off-duty ‘When you can help, you should’ says Korissa Kipping

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com CGH emergency room nurse Korissa Kipping was on Interstate 88 on Oct. 17 headed to a pumpkin patch with her husband and kids.

Around 10 a.m., the family saw debris and a two-vehicle accident on the side of the road.

“We looked at each other and said we have to check on them,” Kipping said.

Kipping and her husband, who has a background in law enforcement, encountered a woman asking for help with a man trapped in a car. The man was bleeding from his forehead and not fully responsive, Kipping said.

Kipping’s husband and another bystander worked to free the man from his vehicle before finally wedging a door open. Kipping used her skills as a trauma nurse and deduced that the man needed help, and fast.

“I didn’t know if I was outside my scope, but I asked for a helicopter,” Kipping said. “They said they couldn’t. I told them my husband’s background and they said they could for him. He also asked for traffic control. EMS pulled up with the Dixon Police. My husband helped them get him on a stretcher and put him in the ambulance to wait for the chopper.”

Kipping said her husband has reached out for more information about the man’s current condition, but they haven’t heard back. Last they knew he was in critical condition in an intensive care unit.

Kipping said she would’ve felt less comfortable helping had she not had training. She has a trauma nursing specialist license, which is above and beyond what’s required in the area. Level one trauma centers

require that license, but CGH isn’t one.

“They send us to get it anyway,” Kipping said. “We see farming accidents and stuff and we need to stabilize people. When you can help, you should. Because I was able to. Even to stop and help. It’s just a matter of feeling like it’s the right thing to do.”

Kipping doesn’t feel extra responsibility to help people in public due to what she does for a living, but she

knows she has skills that very few others do.

The car carrying Kipping and her family had the skills to help on Oct. 17. Her husband was already starting to pull over to help before she even told him to.

“As far as fate, if you believe in that stuff, I think there’s something to be said there,” Kipping said. “I don’t know how that man would’ve been otherwise.”

Appellate court reverses judge’s decision on order

BY ERIC SCHELKOPF eschelkopf@shawmedia.com Illinois’ 2nd District Appellate Court has ordered a reversal of Kane County Judge Kevin Busch’s decision to grant a temporary restraining order to prevent the enforcement of an indoor dining ban at FoxFire restaurant in Geneva.

The court found Nov. 6 that “the trial court abused its discretion by granting a temporary restraining order where the petitioner failed to establish a likelihood of success on the merits.”

A ban on indoor dining and bar service went into effect in Region 1 counties on Oct. 23 because of a ris-

ing number of COVID-19 infections across the region.

The owners of FoxFire restaurant had asked Busch to issue the restraining order to prevent Gov. JB Pritzker, the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Kane County Health Department from enforcing the indoor dining ban.

They also filed a lawsuit against the three parties. According to the lawsuit, Pritzker had exceeded the emergency powers that were given to him.

The suit also contended that the IDPH and the county health department acted beyond the authority granted to them.

Pritzker and the IDPH had asked

for the order to be vacated and for the temporary restraining order to be dissolved. Busch agreed with the suit’s contention that Pritzker exceeded the 30-day emergency powers granted to him.

In March, Pritzker issued a disaster proclamation because of COVID-19.

However, the appellate court disagreed with his ruling.

“In addition to the clear language of the Emergency Management Act, these statutes all confirm our conclusion that the Legislature intended to allow the governor to issue successive disaster proclamations stemming from an ongoing disaster,” the court said. “Because the trial court therefore misapprehended the cor-

rect construction of the Act, it abused its discretion when it held that the governor was without power to make successive disaster proclamations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and that FoxFire consequently established a likelihood of success on the merits.”

FoxFire previously had announced that it plans to keep its dining room open as a way to protest the new rules. K.C. Gulbro, one of the owners of FoxFire restaurant, said in an affidavit that a temporary shutdown of all indoor dining and drinks at FoxFire for more than a few days will lead to an “insurmountable” loss of income, putting the restaurant out of business.

The show will kick off on Friday, Nov. 27 and run until Jan. 3 daily from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. at 214 W. First St. Music can be heard from the comfort of your car on 97.1 FM. “Here we are again at the time of the year approaching the celebration and beginning of the Christmas season,” owner Jerry Stauffer said.

“It has been a challenging year with the pandemic and many things in

our lives have temporarily changed.

But I’m happy to announce that Lights On First will be even bigger and better this year and will surely bring the brightest of smiles to everyone that views the show.”

Kickoff night will begin at 5 p.m. with Santa and Mrs. Claus. There will be social distancing and photo opportunities. Carols will begin at 5:45 p.m. and the show will have over 100,000 LED lights. Streets will be blocked off so everyone can enjoy the view on opening night.

Hands on Oregon works on multiple projects

On Tuesday, Nov. 3, Hands On Oregon finished its Liberty Deck project by installing a railing on the new eating area outside of Hector’s Cocina.

The railing was generously donated by Woods to match the railing that it donated to Veterans Stage below the flag on Conover Square, HOO member Rick Ryland said.

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, HOO finished its fifth project, the Shaffner house. The city building inspector gave the final OK for the homeowner to move back to his newly-renovated home that was severely damaged five years ago by a falling tree.

The HOO volunteers worked 660 hours to restore the house. Tim Krug, city commissioner, along with his wife, Kim, secured a $10,000 grant from the USDA Rural Development Program.

Those funds plus the generous donations of local businesses made the project a success, Ryland said.

Tip Top Roofing of Sycamore donated the labor and materials to repair the roof at a value of $6,100.

In-person instruction might end with break Health department has recommended students not return after Thanksgiving

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Thanksgiving break could mark the end of in-person instruction for the fall semester at Ogle County schools.

The Ogle County Health Department has recommended that schools not return in person due to COVID-19 concerns of who the students will be exposed to during the holiday.

All county schools sent a letter to parents outlining the possibility and upcoming school board meetings will make the final decision.

Oregon Superintendent Tom Mahoney said internal and OCHD data will be used to make the decision. The complicated part for him is in-person schooling may not be causing spread.

“We had a call with OCHD Friday and Monday because we had several students in quarantine or positive,” Mahoney said. “I asked if it was because of school. They said it was related to community spread. My concern was sending high school students home, that could only increase

the spread. My belief and data shows that we’re not adding to the spread.”

Mahoney said another factor is that his district is thin on staff due to COVID-19 and a variety of other issues like employees using off days. He says his district will be prepared for a potential shift to remote learning. Oregon’s school board meeting is Nov. 16.

“Three weeks ago it was a low number of kids and staff,” Mahoney said. “Last week was a high number. We had 97 elementary students quarantined. I believe that was due to spread during Halloween.”

Polo Superintendent Kelly Mandrell said her board will decide at its meeting on Nov. 23 and no final choices have been made. Polo had to close its Centennial Elementary School for two weeks recently due to a COVID-19 outbreak.

“It depends on the week,” Mandrell said. “We haven’t had to shut any more schools down, so we’re doing well.”

Forreston Superintendent Sheri Smith wrote in a letter to families last week that an announcement will be made by Nov. 20 on if her district will be going to remote learning. Parents were asked to make plans for the possibility of remote learning from after Thanksgiving until mid-January.

Smith said teachers have met to start planning for the possibility of remote learning, but in-per-

son instruction is still the district’s preferred learning environment.

“We will be releasing our remote learning plan, student schedules, and overall expectations prior to moving to remote learning,” Smith wrote. “We will notify families via skyward email when these resources are available. I continue to ask for your patience as we do our very best to keep our students and staff as safe as possible.”

Smith also said that due to the highest number of cases received in one day, the OCHD has turned over all contact tracing to school nurses.

This means all communications regarding school exclusions, close contacts, and return to school for symptomatic students will be channeled through school nurses. The OCHD will continue to make contacts for all positive student or staff cases.

OCHD Public Administrator Kyle Auman said Ogle County is experiencing “significant” community spread, which caused it to call for schools to do a prolonged closure during the holidays.

Residents at the Rochelle Gardens long-term care facility are in need of help and donations for the holiday season, according to Cass Headon, one of its employees.

Headon took to Facebook last week seeking help for the residents who have been locked down for eight months.

Vending machines haven’t been able to be filled at the facility due to COVID-19.

Items requested include new socks, gloves, hats, pens, crayons, colored pencils, notebooks, word search books, room decoration plaques, pop, chips, candy, books and lap blankets. Monetary donations are accepted as well.

“Help me cheer them up with a little extra for the holidays,” Headon wrote.

Donations can be dropped off at Headon’s Medcare office at 1212 Currency Court in Rochelle.

With an unseasonably mild November, people are getting an early start on the holiday decorating.

Some of those light strands from previous years may not be working anymore and can be recycled very easily in Ogle County.

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) is again partnering with local fire departments and villages to again offer several convenient drop-off boxes so those frustrating, nonfunctional holiday light strands can be recycled.

Starting Nov. 16, drop-off boxes will be available at the following fire departments: Rochelle, Byron, Stillman Valley, and Mt. Morris. They will also be located at the village halls in Polo, Forreston, and Davis Junction, and Creston.

Light strands are also accepted at the Ogle County Courthouse and at the OCSWMD office at 909 Pines Road in Oregon. Boxes will remain at these locations until Jan. 25, 2021.

Material not accepted include rope lights, wreaths, garland, metal stakes or silhouettes, live greens, plastic decorations, timers, and light packaging or boxes.

Plan the outside

Exterior illumination and other exterior decorations share the holiday spirit with others. It can be overwhelming trying to visualize it all without a plan in place. It’s easy to tie things together with some natural elements in your desired palette. For example, white, gold and green may look beautiful. Put boxwood clippings and white amaryllis flowers together. Due to COVID-19, the way people interact with one another has changed dramatically over the last several months. Despite this, the public has proven very resilient and adaptive, often finding a silver lining while confronting challenges that might once have seemed insurmountable.

Chicken also can be dressed up so it easily competes with other protein sources for top billing on holiday tables.

Easily cooked on the stovetop in a flash, this recipe for “Almond Chicken With Peaches and Roquefort” from “125 Best Chicken Recipes” (Robert Rose) by Rose Murray can be customized and multiplied depending on the size of the crowd.

While peaches may not be in season where you live during the holidays, simply substitute two small pears, which work well for fall and winter meals. Serve with crisp green beans and lemon couscous, which is easily made by adding 1⁄2 teaspoon grated lemon zest and 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice to warm couscous.

Almond Chicken With Peaches and Roquefort – Serves 2 2 skinless, boneless 3⁄4 cup sliced almonds 1⁄4 cup dry white wine or chicken breasts chicken stock 2 unpeeled peaches, sliced; 1⁄4 cup all-purpose flour or 2 small pears, cored 1⁄4 cup whipping cream Salt and pepper and sliced 2 tablespoons Roquefort or 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 tablespoons vegetable oil Gorgonzola cheese 1. Place chicken breasts between two pieces of plastic wrap and pound to an even thickness of about 1⁄4 inch. Dredge in flour mixed with 1⁄4 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

Dip each breast in egg and coat with almonds.

2. In a large skillet, heat half the oil over medium heat. Add chicken and cook about 5 minutes per side, turning once, until golden and no longer pink inside. Remove to a warm platter and keep warm.

3. Add remaining oil to pan and heat over medium heat. Add peaches (or pears) and cook 1 minute. Stir in wine and bring to a boil; cook 3 minutes to reduce. Stir in cream, cheese and salt and pepper to taste. Cook stirring, until thickened. Spoon sauce around the chicken and serve.

Art group paints outdoors in Ogle, Lee counties Members of the Rock River Valley Painters Guild and Eagle’s Nest Art Group, and artists from The Next Picture Show gallery in Dixon held outdoor art sessions during the summer and fall.

Local plein air artists from Ogle, Winnebago, and Lee counties came together weekly to paint.

They found much to inspire them as they visited several local sites. This year, plein air (outdoor) painting became even more desirable.

Artists moved from indoor group sessions in favor of the out-ofdoors, in order to avoid the concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

They visited the Nachusa Grasslands in Franklin Grove, the Jarrett Prairie Preserve in Byron, Castle Rock State Park and Fairgrounds Park in Oregon, as well as local farms, historic sites, private homes and garden centers.

Recently, 12 artists met at Equestrian Pointe, off North River Road in Oregon, to paint and photograph the colors of autumn at Terry and Bev Olson’s flower and vegetable gardens.

“It was a wonderful time for artists to capture the very unique garden setting, which also includes many sculptural elements created by Terry Olson,” said Marsha Behrens, ENAG member. “Many locals may know Bev Olson from her regular participation in weekly Farmer’s Markets in Bryon and Oregon.”

The Ogle County Health Department shared a press release on its Facebook page last week from Rockford area hospitals addressing the recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases.

SwedishAmerican, OSF HealthCare Saint Anthony Medical Center, MercyHealth, Crusader Community Health and the Winnebago County Health Department worked in conjunction on the press release.

“With the number of hospital admissions increasing, health care systems are beginning to feel the strain,” the release said. Since the numbers are rising at alarming rates and hospitals are experiencing significant increases in COVID19 admissions, the overall available bed spaces for those suffering from other medical illnesses is decreasing, as is the number of available qualified staff.”

“While hospitals have not yet reached capacity or are feeling overwhelmed, they are concerned about what will happen if this trend of

positive cases continues.”

COVID-19 hospitalizations have reached numbers not seen since April and May. The 4,742 people hospitalized in Illinois due to COVID19 as of Monday night marked the highest number since May 8, which was right around the peak of the first wave of the virus, according to a story by Jerry Nowicki of Capitol News Illinois.

Gov. JB Pritzker said Illinois is still “locked in a struggle with this virus as winter approaches.”

“Across the state, the majority of our regions are seeing far higher

rates of hospitalizations for COVID19 than they ever did last spring,” Pritzker said. “Outside of Cook and the collar counties, much of Illinois’ communities are experiencing the worst surge that they’ve seen yet.”

Freeport’s FHN Memorial Hospital also released a statement last week expressing concern over COVID-19 hospitalizations. FHN has not yet reached capacity, but officials are concerned over what may happen if the positive case trend continues.

“Since the numbers are rising at alarming rates and hospitals are

experiencing significant increases in COVID19 admissions, the overall available bed capacity is decreasing, at same time the demands on our highly qualified staff are increasing,” FHN President and CEO Mark Gridley said.

Dr. Eric Kuhns shared a message on Sterling’s CGH Medical Center’s Facebook page in recent weeks urging the community to work to limit the spread of COVID-19 and prepare for hospitals to see a surge.

Kuhns said more than 30 patients were in CGH with COVID-19 making up the majority of all medical beds.

ICU space is filling up as well, and contingency plans are being made to keep up with equipment, space and staffing needs.

Preparations have been made for the surge, Kuhns said, but COVID-19 is putting a strain on things.

“With the new diagnosis numbers continuing to climb, the weeks ahead are going to be rough,” Kuhns said. “This is not a drill, it’s bad here, right now, much worse than the state average. When the community rates are high, it leaks into even carefully monitored nursing homes, and several have 20 plus cases and climbing.”

Winnebago County agencies request additional beds Bed sets have been requested from IEMA, RHCC Additional hospital bed sets have been requested by Winnebago County agencies due to the recent surge in COVID-19 patients in Region 1 hospitals.

Winnebago County Emergency Management, City of Rockford Emergency Management, and the Winnebago County Health Department, have requested the bed sets from the Illinois Emergency Management Agency through the Regional Hospital Coordinating Center A bed set includes a bed, headboard with suction and oxygen, HEPA filter, lamp, trunk, tent and chair. The bed set does not include additional medical personnel.

“The increasing rate of COVID-19 infection has stressed the healthcare systems in the region and highlights the consequences of unchecked transmission in the community,” officials said in a press release. “All

entities should be adhering to the Tier 2 mitigations outlined in Executive Order #2020-62 to protect the community.

“All health systems are working to care for and manage both COVID and non-COVID patients and provide the appropriate level of quality care but the public’s help is needed NOW.” The press release also urged area residents to take the following actions immediately to prevent additional infections: • Stay home as much as possible.

• Use curb-side and delivery options.

• Limit non-essential travel.

• Do not gather outside of your household.

• Wear a face covering when with those outside your household.

• Wash hands frequently.

• Maintain social distancing.

• If you are sick, stay home.

• Get tested as needed.

• Follow the quarantine and isolation guidelines as provided by your health department to prevent transmission to others.

Marvin was born April 20, 1928 in Freeport, the son of Albert and Grace (Viel) Birkholz. He married Marietta Reet Nov. 4, 1950 at the Baileyville

MARJORIE W. KLENTZ GERMAN VALLEY – Marjorie Wilma Klentz, 100, of German Valley, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at Rock River Healthcare in Rockford.

She was born Aug. 11, 1920 in German Valley, the daughter of “Mako” Herman Robert and Margreta Wilhelmine (Collman) Wessels.

The Collman and Wessels ancestors immigrated to the United States coming from Ostfriesland, Germany.

HELEN SELLERS FORRESTON – Helen Sellers, 92, died November 4, 2020 at Walnut Acres.

Helen was born July 13, 1928 to Rolley and Maude (Scott) Munson in Cerro Gordo, where she graduated high school in 1947.

She married John Sellers on Nov. 3, 1958 and lived most of her adult life in Forreston where she worked as bookkeeper for Smith Ford Sales.

Helen was the ultimate homemaker.

She loved to bake! Her specialty was making carmel cinnamon rolls on a

He was born Sept. 27, 1931 to Ralph and Lucile Lane in Freeport. He graduated from Forreston, Class of 1949, and then served his country in the Navy aboard the USS Columbus CA-74 for 4

Baptist Church. He was a member of North Grove Evangelical Church. Marvin farmed the Forreston area for many years.

He also worked for Polo CO-OP, Stephenson County Service

Company, and drove bus for the Forreston School District.

Surviving are his wife, Marietta Birkholz of Freeport; sons, Jerry (Beth) Birkholz of Andover, Minnesota, Darrell (Pam) Birkholz of Freeport and Roger Birkholz of Freeport; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Marvin was preceded in death by his

parents, sister, Jennie; two brothers, John, and Harold; and one great-granddaughter, Grace.

Private family services will be held.

Pastor Mark Phillips will officiate.

A memorial has been established in Marvin’s memory.

Marjorie married Roland Merlin Klentz on March 29, 1949 at the Silver Creek Reformed Church in German Valley.

Marjorie worked with Roland on the family farm for 48 years. She was a lifelong member of Silver Creek Reformed Church in German Valley, where she was active in Kings Daughters and the Women’s Guild.

She also was a member of the Stephenson County Farm Bureau. When

Marjorie was young, she was a good baseball player and she played the Hawaiian guitar.

Marjorie is survived by her son, Michael (Judy) Klentz of German Valley; granddaughters, Holly Dirksen of German Valley and Laura Dirksen of Ridott; great-grandchildren, Mikayla Dirksen, Brayden Dorsey, Jayda Perkins and Aaliyah Perkins; neph-

ew, Miles Wessels of German Valley; and niece, Marcella “Marcy” Wessels of German Valley.

Marjorie is predeceased by her brother, Robert “Bob” Wessels.

Private interment service at Silver Creek Cemetery in German Valley.

At the age of 75, she and John shingled their roof together.

Suffering from dementia, she has been a resident of Walnut Acres since 2012 where the nurses and staff made her feel at home and provided excellent care.

We are thankful for FHN Hospice and their respectful care during her final days.

She is survived by one son, Roger

(Teresa) Fandel of Sacramento, California; two daughters, Tina Fandel Cannova of Boise, Idaho and Diane Sellers Tawil of Collinsville; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, David Sellers; two brothers; one sister; and one great-granddaughter.

He is survived only by his wife, Ethel and some very close friends.

He liked to go fly fishing, RV camping and attending UNM

basketball games from Carlyle Gym to the Pit. Much thanks to all the wonderful staff at Presbyterian Hospital on 7th floor neuro unit who took care of him and Ethel.

No funeral will be held, and he will be cremated.

Nov. 1 Reed Scheidecker, 33, of Byron was arrested by deputies on a drug court warrant. Scheidecker had no bond and was scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Nov. 5 Darrius Garcia, 41, of Dixon, was

arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while under the influence of an intoxicating compound.

Garcia was unable to post the $5,000 or 10 percent bond and was scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Nov. 6 Gerad Rogde, 32, of Oregon was arrested on a warrant for a driving while license suspended.

Rogde’s bond was set at $3,000/10%

Nov. 7 At approximately 3 p.m., deputies along with Oregon Fire/EMS responded to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Pines Road and Angus Road.

After conducting an investigation it was learned John Hawkins, 76, of Oregon, was on his motorcycle when a Subaru traveling in front of him slowed down to avoid an animal in the roadway.

Hawkins didn’t see the vehicle slowing until after the crest of the hill, rear ending the Subaru, causing him to be thrown from the motorcycle.

Both vehicles sustained disabling damage and were towed from the scene.

Hawkins was transported to Javon Bea Hospital where he was treated for non life-threatening injuries.

violation occurred in the 200 block of N. Daysville Road.

On Nov. 3 at approximately 5:17 p.m., police were notified of criminal damage done to the bathroom and some play equipment. Following a thorough investigation, one 13-year-old female of Oregon, one 12-year-old female of Mt. Morris, and one 13-year-old of Mt.
