Board approves purchase of LED sign Old Kable Printing plant owners’ tax appeal discussed

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Mt. Morris Village Board unanimously approved the purchase of an electronic LED sign at a cost not to exceed $23,000 at its Nov. 24 meeting.

The sign will go up at Sterling Federal Bank in the village. The bank has agreed for the sign to go up at its location at no cost besides time on the sign. Sterling Federal will also cover the electricity cost of the sign.

“Economic Development wanted to get an electronic LED sign on the highway,” Trustee Jerry Stauffer said. “They started talking with Sterling Federal.

They’ve had a sign on the highway for many years and we asked about a joint effort sign and they were eager to work

with us. We’re working with their sign guy. I’m pleased with their proposal.”

Stauffer said the total cost of the sign is $22,671.26 and it can be programmed from anywhere with the internet. It will come from Turnroth Sign Co. in Rock Falls. It will be used for meeting announcements, public events, Strawfest, concerts, charitable organizations and more.

The sign will go up in mid-January, Stauffer said. As far as the life expectancy of the sign, Stauffer said buyers get 10 years out of one and upgrade before they wear out.

Finance Trustee Philip Labash said only $2,000 was earmarked for flags and signs this year, but unexpected expense funds can be funneled into that account to pay for the sign.

Phoenix Tax Appeal

Labash said at the meeting that the owners of the old Kable Printing plant are appealing their property tax bill assessment on the building and want it reduced to what they paid for it. Phoenix Investors out of Milwaukee owns the

plant.

“They asked for it last year and didn’t get it and probably won’t get it this year,” Labash said. “Superintendent Tom Mahoney from the school district has been working on it and will act as the intervener. $220,000 is what they paid, I believe.”

The board took no action on the issue and Labash said there could be a cost with intervention.

“I can think of many times we’ve had this situation and we’ve stepped up with the school district,” Labash said. “If Mahoney acts, I’ll bring it to the board.

It’s been a couple thousand dollars in the past.”

Phoenix Investors is currently working on a partial demolition of the plant.

Village President Dan Elsasser said the demolition will impact the property tax number, but in future years. Whatever happens to the site and building in the future could be fruitful for its property value.

“It could be more attractive and will develop and sell and could end up being a huge positive,” Labash said.

Firefighters: “Keep the Wreath Red”

Mt. Morris Fire Chief Did you know an average of over 1,000 home fires a year started when Christmas trees or holiday decorations ignited?

These fires caused an estimated annual average of 25 civilian deaths, 60 civilian injuries and $30 million in direct property damage.

Again this holiday season the Mt. Morris Fire Protection District will be participating in the statewide safety program “Keep the Wreath Red”. The program is very simple, a wreath has been placed on the front of the Mt. Morris Firehouse.

The wreath is covered in red bulbs. If a fire occurs during the holiday season caused by holiday decorations, a bulb will be changed to white.

So far Mt. Morris hasn’t had to change a bulb to white since this program was started in 2004.

If you follow some of the fire safety tips listed below the wreath will be kept red all season!

Holiday Decorating Safety Tips • Use caution with holiday decorations and whenever possible, choose those made with flame-resistant, flame-retardant or non-combustible materials.

• Natural Christmas trees always involve some risk of fire. To minimize

the risk, get a fresh tree and keep it watered at all times. Do not put the tree within three feet of a fireplace, space heater, radiator, or heat vent.

• Decorate with children in mind. Do not put ornaments that have small parts or metal hooks, or look like food or candy, on the lower branches where small children can reach them. Trim protruding branches at or below a child’s eye level.

• Do not burn Christmas tree branches, treated wood, or wrapping paper in a home fireplace or woodstove.

• Purchase only lights and electrical decorations bearing the name of an independent testing lab, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and maintenance.

• Carefully inspect new and previously used light strings and replace damaged items before plugging lights in. Do not overload extension cords, instead use a rated power strip and do not run an electrical cord under a rug.

• Check your strands of lights to determine the number of strands that may be connected. Connect no more than three strands of push-in type bulbs together. A maximum of 50 total bulbs of the larger screw-in type bulbs.

• Always unplug lights before replacing light bulbs or fuses. Don’t mount lights in any way that can damage the cord’s wire insulation (i.e., using clips, not nails).

• Keep children and pets away from light strings and electrical decorations.

• Turn off all light strings and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.

• Keep candles away from decorations and other combustible materials and never leave candles unattended. 41% of holiday fires are started by a candle. Most importantly do not use candles to decorate Christmas trees in any way.

• Last but certainly not least, Test your smoke alarms, have one on each floor of your home and have a fire escape plan and practice it.

Cause of Nov. 25 blaze, still being determined

A 27-year-old woman and her unborn baby died Nov. 25 following a fire in their home in Mt. Morris.

A specific cause of death for Melissa Lamesch will not be released until toxicology and other results are available, which may take several weeks, a spokeswoman at the Ogle County Coroner’s office said last week.

Lamesch’s baby was due Nov. 28, according to a birth registry website.

She had been an EMT since June 2016 and was working for Trace Ambulance in Tinley Park, according to her brother, Karl Lamesch, who established a GoFundMe page to raise money for a memorial.

Mt. Morris Fire Chief Rob Hough IV said the Ogle County 911 center received multiple calls at 4:29 p.m. for smoke coming from the residence.

Mt. Morris firefighters arrived on scene and saw heavy smoke venting from the roof and eaves.

“Smoke detectors could be heard sounding from the exterior of the residence,” Hough said in a press release. “Reports from Dispatch and neighbors were that a resident was likely still inside.”

Hough said firefighters found heavy smoke and heat as they entered the structure.

“While extinguishing the fire and searching the residence for

life, a female victim was found on the floor in the kitchen and was quickly removed from the residence to awaiting EMS crews,” he said. “Despite life saving measures, the 27-yearold pregnant female was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Hough said the fire was extinguished by 5:10 p.m., but firefighters remained on scene performing salvage and overhaul of the structure until approximately 11 p.m. Most mutual aid companies were released by 6 p.m.

“The structure is uninhabitable at this time with initial damage estimates to the building are $125,000. This estimate is including any of the resident’s personal contents,” he said. “Mt. Morris Police, Mt. Morris Fire, Office of the State Fire Marshal and Ogle County Sheriff and Coroner’s Office are performing a joint investigation. The investigation is still ongoing.”

Additional assistance at the scene was provided by Byron, Dixon Rural, Forreston, German Valley, Leaf River, Oregon, Polo, and Stillman.

“The District wishes o extend its heartfelt condolences to the family on their loss,” Hough said.

Lamesch worked as an EMT: ‘It was like a calling to her’

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Melissa Lamesch was keeping the name of her unborn son a secret.

The only clue she gave to family members was the nickname he’d be going by: Little Bear.

“We theorized it would be Barry or Barrington,” Melissa’s brother, Karl, said. “He would’ve been Little Bear to us.”

Lamesch, 27, and her unborn baby died Nov. 25 following a fire in their home in Mt. Morris. Her baby was due Nov. 28.

Karl said his sister was “absolutely ecstatic” about becoming a mother. She was always doing something for the baby. She and Karl did a lot of baby shopping and had installed her car seat and were getting her bag ready for the hospital. He helped her hang her ultrasound pictures.

Lamesch worked as an EMT since June 2016 and was working for Trace Ambulance in Tinley Park.

She sometimes worked double and triple shifts, Karl said.

Melissa decided to become an EMT after an incident in her life during college. She became passionate about it after that.

“A lot of her was an EMT,” Karl said. “She was hard-working. She did everything she could. It was like a calling to her. That’s what she did.”

Lamesch’s parents, Gustave and Deanna are residents of the area in Mt. Morris and Malta. She has four siblings, Karl, Cassie Baal, Bryan Lamesch and Julialyn Shedd.

“We have such different personalities,” Karl said. “We can fight and argue but we always make up.”

Melissa and Karl had a “best friend” relationship. They took classes together at Northern Illinois University and would attend concerts and events in the Chicago area.

Her favorite band was The Script.

They once took a megabus from Chicago to Indianapolis to Cincinnati following them.

Melissa had a passion for art. She was also a perfectionist.

“With her handwriting, organization, everything was to a T,” Karl said. “I’ve been going through her storage and everything was organized.”

Melissa graduated from Oregon High School in 2011 and attended college at Roosevelt University in Chicago and NIU. She learned to be an EMT at Elgin Community College and Swedish American Hospital.

As of Tuesday night, $8,725 had been raised. So far, that’s enough for a tree at Morton Arboretum in her honor. She loved that place, especially the light show every Christmas time. The tree will be planted in the spring, Karl said.

Karl also wants to donate to the shelter where she got her cat, Antonio. Antonio was lost in the fire as well. Other plans include buying toys for a children’s hospital in honor of her son.

Karl wants his sister to be remembered for how she was.

“Happy go lucky, never put herself first,” Karl said. “Her smile and the way she was in life. She’d find all the good things about a bad situation and how to make it better. Her jokes and all of her crazy shenanigans.”

“She was very much a people person and very bubbly. She could talk to anyone about anything.”

Ogle County cases increase to 2,894 as of Dec. 1

Eight deaths and 262 cases were reported in a week

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Health Department reported 43 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, Dec. 1, totaling 2,894 One hundred and sixty six cases were reported Wednesday, Nov. 25 through Monday. 262 new cases have come in the past week. Ages and locations of the individuals that test positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

The OCHD has reported eight new deaths in the past week. Ogle County has seen a total of 34

COVID-19 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Recoveries of documented cases stand at 2,256, with 110 new ones reported Tuesday.

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 965 cases in the zip

code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Stillman Valley has 169 cases, Byron has 547 cases and Davis Junction has 180 cases.

Oregon and Mt. Morris have 316 and 166 cases, respectively.

Polo has 150 cases, Leaf River has 73 cases and Forreston has 111 cases.

The Sauk Valley as a whole saw seven COVID-19-related deaths Tuesday.

Whiteside County announced three more COVID-related deaths on Tuesday involving two people in their 90s and one in his or her 70s.

Whiteside County also had 29 new cases and 70 recoveries, with the new cases involving one person younger than 20, two in their 20s, four in their 30s, six in their 40s, six in their 50s, six in their

I would like to publicly thank the housekeeping staff, the lab techs, the physical therapists, the respiratory therapists, the nurses, and the doctors who have been risking their lives and their own family’s health by taking such good care of the COVID-19 positive patients at CGH Medical Center, and at all of the hospitals and nursing homes in the area.

It is painful to see the hospital staff with red welts and bruises on their faces and necks resulting from wearing the tight protective masks for many hours, day after day, as they care for extremely ill patients and try to help their families communicate with them.

These dedicated medical people are successfully treating some patients and sending them home. But they may also

be the last human contact your loved ones have before they die.

Please show that you care about our medical community heroes by staying home or wearing a mask and social distancing when you need to go out.

Cancelled Christmas concert affects food pantries

For the first time since 2004, northwest Illinois musicians will not gather in early December to present the Mt. Morris Christmas Cantata, a free community concert.

Concerns about COVID-19 caused the cancellation of the holiday tradition, which showcased vocalists and instrumentalists from throughout the northwest Illinois region.

The event was a fundraiser for local food pantries, Loaves and Fish in Mt. Morris and Lifeline in Oregon, which had each received approximately $600 every year since 2010.

Food pantries are experiencing an increase in requests this year, due to the pandemic’s strain on the economy. To make up for lost support from the annual Christmas Cantata, the concert committee is asking the public to donate directly to their local food pantries, including Loaves and Fish, 409 W. Brayton Rd., Mt. Morris, IL 61054, 815-734-4573, and Lifeline Food Pantry, 201 N. 3rd St. #6, Oregon, IL 61061, 815732-7891.

Dispatcher’s first day included a plane crash at the airport

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com On Sandy Beitel’s first day working as an Ogle County 911 dispatcher on July 4, 1985, there was an airplane crash at the Ogle County Airport. She had three days experience.

Six years later, Beitel became the county’s 911 coordinator. She retired earlier this year after 35 years.

When she started, the system was just basic 911 on a landline. When she retired, the department was preparing to respond to text messages.

Ninety percent of calls come from wireless phones now.

“When cell phones happened, first, it was a speed dial where we got no info,” Beitel said. “Industry improved and we got better locations. Now we’re getting calls that plot on a map and a phone number and the tower it’s routing from. Now we’re getting ready for text messages.”

Beitel’s department used to only cover the Sheriff’s office and Oregon and Mt. Morris. Now it covers 911 operations for the entire county outside of the Rochelle Police Department.

Work is done from the county’s new 911 center, which has five consoles.

Beitel was a nurse by trade before she became a dispatcher. After moving back into the area from Arizona, one of her softball friends said there was an opening as a dispatcher, saying it involved sending medical help. Beitel jumped it.

She worked from the basement of the jail then and had no typing skills prior to being hired, which were needed for every report.

Answering 35 years worth of phone calls has yielded all kinds of experiences for Beitel.

“There’s a lot of funny ones with deputies,” Beitel said. “We had one checking an abandoned vehicle and there was a snake in the glove box and we heard him yell a highpitched scream.

“There’s a lot of sad ones, loss of life. It’s hard to take the call of an old person calling about their spouse.

Dispatchers often don’t find out the outcome of calls and have open wounds.

There are now organizations that help dispatchers with PTSD after many long, traumatic calls.

What Beitel plans to work on, even in retirement, is dispatchers being recognized as first responders.

“We need to recognize them as such,” Beitel said. “They’re highly-trained and can be highly-affected. Illinois hasn’t. I will continue working to see that happen. It’s not just money. Some insurance companies will cover mental health stuff for first responders.”

The calls that Beitel reflects fondly on are the ones that end well, with everyone walking away unharmed.

In retirement, Beitel plans to make up for time lost spent on long nights fielding calls and doing 911 work.

“I have 10 grandchildren,” Beitel said. “I want to see them and help them with school. My husband has been retired for years. I plan to travel and spend time with my family.

They gave up a lot while I did this.”

Roy Sharick was Oregon’s main “railroad man” Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK As I recall Oregon Historical Sites and businesses I associate them with a name.

Examples of some of these are the Oregon Lumber Co. (Mervil Rhodes), Schiller Piano Co. (Frederick G. Jones), National Clothing Store (Gene Lebwick), Warmolt’s Clinic (Dr. Warmolt’s), Ogle Co. Fair (Grandma Burright), Etnyre Manufacturing (Daniel Etnyre), Republican Reporter Newspaper (Ernie Landers), Oregon Grade School (Ruby Nash), etc.

In 2012 I wrote an article about Roy Sharick. He is definitely the name that is associated with the railroad.

He worked for the railroads for 60 years working seven days a week for $35 dollars a week.

Bob Etnyre shared his experiences at the Oregon Depot in a letter he wrote to Bonnie Hendrickson.

“At the Oregon Depot we were always welcomed by the ticket master Roy Sharick. The story of the Oregon Depot is the story of Roy Sharick and vice versa. Roy was ticket agent for the railroad for 40 or 50 years.

“In fact I believe that Roy might have been born with train tickets in his hand. No nicer a man has ever lived and he loved to have kids in his station, but he would always warn us not to bother the passengers.

“I remember my trips home on the Zephyr from college and the service in WWII. When we disembarked from the train Roy was always there to greet us with a cheery smile and a big hello.

“The depot is a cherished symbol of a grander life for all of us who were privileged to use. Roy Sharick received several letters of commendation from the Burlington officials.

One of his job responsibilities was to watch each train passing through Oregon and reporting any problems he observed.

“In 1924 he was highly commended

by J. E. Farrington, then Superintendent of the Aurora Division of the Rock Island Lines for reporting the condition of a silk train making a cross country run through Oregon over the Burlington lines. A brake connection was dragging on this train, and noticing it, he signaled the crew.

Mr. Farrington’s Commendation said in closing: “I am taking this occasion to express to you the appreciation of the management for your alertness and the prompt action taken.”

of the Republican-Reporter wrote: “R. L. Sharick a community loss. In each generation, a community like Oregon has the privilege to have among its citizens a very limited number of people who are recognized as being special to a great many.

“This recognition is not necessarily measured in material wealth but rather by deeds, community dedication and devotion to his fellow man. Rupert L, “Roy” Sharick was a classic example of this type of special person.”

hristmas has always been a big part of our life and we loved decorating in the country inside and out. This year I have heard many people on TV announce that they cannot go anywhere so they are now spending more time decorating their homes.

Last year we moved over the holidays and we did not get out as much and it had all been packed away in the Christmas room in the basement.

The room really is a basement bedroom with cedar lined closets and much built in shelving for holding for holding stuff.

Someone at one time did stay down there but in this day and age there is no egress window which is necessary. It was turned into the Christmas room.

In Eagle Point the whole house was transformed at the holidays and there was much entertaining. As I became interested in antiques, Christmas ornaments were soon high on my list of things to look for.

My sister, Ruby Jean and I traveled around the country side visiting antique shops and stores following the holidays looking for after Christmas sales.

One day many years ago we ended up in Galena in a Christmas shop and as I walked through the shop I stopped before a very large tall tree filled with the most beautiful ornaments I had ever seen.

They had a sheen and a luster to them with very little glitter, with a star on the top for the holder. I found out they were hand blown in Germany. A whole tree of those was spectacular.

Ruby Jean started buying them for a friend and I started buying them for myself. I also started looking into the history of these ornaments made in Germany. They were not inexpensive and

we looked for them elsewhere. We found them at Princeton in a store called “Patterns Of The Past.”

These ornaments started in 1596 in Northern Bavaria in Lauscha, Germany. It was a cottage industry of family operated businesses called “Glass Blowers of Lauscha.”

Each family specialized in some area. It might be churches or maybe pine cones. Heinz MullerBlech was known for his birds.

In 1951 Russia took over Lauscha with the idea of stamping out Christianity and Christmas.

Heinz crossed the border to Western Germany.

Some glass blowers went to Italy, Columbia, Mexico, and Poland. Heinz had managed to smuggle out some of his glass blowing moulds when he left.

Also family members still left in Eastern Germany would send him half a mould at a time and he started his workshop again in 1953. He and his wife Inge kept the tradition of making Christmas ornaments going and called the business IngeGlas.

The Berlin Wall was in place from 1961 – 1989.

Many of the glass blowers who went to other countries continued their skills in those countries. Their ornaments took on some of the characteristics of that particular country which made them very unusual. I have a box from Mexico and

It was a popular gift to a new home owner or could be given to accompany an actual coffee pot that was given as a gift.

In 1975 a couple from Spokane, Washington made a trip to Germany and eventually purchased a large assortment of these ornaments and started selling them under “Old World Christmas.”

In 1987 the star was placed on the top to set the German ornament off and also it helped make it distinct. They also included little stories with each ornament. They were doing a great business at that time.

Learning environment impacts online learning I

have heard it many times in recent weeks, “I don’t like online learning!” or, “I’m just not good at online learning.”

It has come from college students, elementary, middle school and high school students, and parents who are saying it about their own children.

For this month we’ll look at the learning environment and students’ responsibilities that might make online learning so different and perhaps more difficult for learners.

We will then consider some tips that might help online students of all ages.

One big difference between traditional school face-to-face settings and online learning is obviously the learning environment. Suddenly families are scrambling to find spaces, wifi connections, and devices to connect their students to the classroom.

Often this is happening with more than one child in the home and while parents are struggling to work at home themselves. That adds up to a lot of stress for the entire family.

ing. This may vary according to the learner. For some music helps, for others quiet is needed. Try to make it as free from distractions as possible.

• Have all materials needed to complete all assignments and tasks. If you need resources, reach out to your school.

Another difference is the amount of responsibility for one’s own learning. There is a shift in the online environment to the student needing to keep track of assignments and due dates more independently.

Considering that a student likely has assignments or tasks from multiple subject areas, if not from a variety of teachers, this is not an easy task.

In the traditional classroom there is likely more support from the teacher in the way of reminders that things are due and what assignments might be missing.

In the online classroom it seems that it is easier to lose track of these things.

Tips: • Set and keep a schedule. It may need to be based on the school schedule and the time required to be online. Set a timer if that is helpful for moving from one event to another.

• Create a daily plan from that schedule. Work with your child to create the plan. Help them as needed to establish a way that works for them to keep track of assignments and due dates.

There is no doubt that online learning is a challenge for all and that includes the teachers.

Keeping the lines of communication open is important.

Be sure to reach out to your child’s teachers if your child is struggling. Together you will likely be able to determine some solutions that will help. No one wants your child to be struggling or to fall behind.

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com Mat Ajvazi wants customers to choose Spring Valley Restaurant in Oregon because of better food, service and value — not because he isn’t following current health regulations as an owner.

The COVID-19 pandemic has driven Ajvazi to change his business and pursue something that’s been completely foreign to him and family in the past—fast food.

The restaurant, located on Illinois 64, in east Oregon, now has a new drive thru and a new broasted chicken-based menu. The moves were made to stay in line with pandemic guidelines that currently prohibit indoor dining.

Ajvazi is one of the few area restaurant owners who continues to adhere to the indoor dining ban.

“We feel it’s the right thing to do,” Ajvazi said.

“It’s to keep the community and employees safe.

It’s a family business and we’re tight with the community. Even if everyone isn’t doing it, we want to take that next step because we care. If we can stop one death or case, it’s worth it.”

A grand re-opening will be held this Friday.

Ajvazi has watched as other restaurants defy the Ogle County Health Department and state mitigations and continue with indoor dining during the pandemic. He believes that’s unfair.

When businesses feel they have to defy the state order to compete with others, it makes for a tough choice, Ajvazi said.

“When they’re going against the order, it disrupts the fair marketplace,” Ajvazi said. “The best usually rises to the top. We’re going to reinvent the restaurant and try to adapt with the times instead of fighting against it.”

Ajvazi’s parents, Amy and Jeff, have owned the restaurant for 20 years and he took over ownership shortly before the pandemic. While he believes they perfected the sit down, local restaurant style, it’s time for a change.

Ajvazi’s parents are now less-involved, but they support his changes.

“I think most local restaurants and even us, you only know one thing,” Ajvazi said. “It’s hard to throw that out the window. It’s not easy to reinvent it. It’s something you have to do. The person who adapts the quickest is who will stay around the longest. I want to be here for the next 20 years.”

Ajvazi plans to keep the drive thru around after the pandemic. He feels there’s a permanent demand for food to go. And the dining room will be back when possible. The drive thru could be open late in the future.

Spring Valley’s new broasted chicken menu will feature fresh, marinated overnight chicken breaded in a proprietary blend of ingredients pressure fried in a patented machine from a new company it’s partnering with.

A digital menu board has been installed with a speaker system to use with its current pickup window.

There will be half chicken boxes, chicken tenders, sandwiches, family dinner boxes and wings with sides made in-house. Later on, Spring Valley’s traditional items like gyros and Italian beefs will be added, as well as breakfast.

“It’s definitely a risk, but I feel confident,” Ajvazi said. “If the drive thru doesn’t work out, we’ll still have the traditional model when this is all over.”

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com CGH Critical Care Nurse Rebecca Tieman jokes many days that she wants to become a barista.

“This isn’t what I signed up for,” Tieman said of nursing during COVID-19. “But it’s my job and I would never not do it.”

Tieman has worked at CGH for over 10 years and has been a nurse for 14 years. In critical care, she used to typically work with a lot of heart issue-related patients and those in-post surgery.

People that need more care and closer watch.

Lately, she’s been working with patients on ventilators, many with COVID-19.

“It’s been very hard to watch people,” Tieman said. “COVID-19 is something we’ve never seen.

Their breathing is something we’ve never seen.

Every time we have to turn them, their oxygen level drops. It takes them time to recover from just that.”

Tieman said she’s concerned about the longterm effects of COVID-19, which are largely

Due to COVID-19, Tieman said she’s seen less patients come in with other issues, who are likely scared off by potentially catching COVID-19 at the hospital.

“We are afraid,” Tieman said. “Where are all the heart attacks? Where are our normal patients? But it is safe here for people. We’re doing everything we can to make sure of that.”

Tieman estimates that 95-100 percent of her job is now COVID-19-related. At first, it was five percent of her job. Within the past three weeks,

COVID-19 care at CGH has “blown up.”

Co-workers at CGH often joke that they see their work family more than they do their real families, and now that’s true, Tieman said. She hasn’t seen her parents more than 5-6 times since the pandemic started. She’s been working a lot of overtime.

“I see my family in Sterling less, too,” Tieman said. “We’re just all stressed out.”

Tieman said she hasn’t received hazard pay due to COVID-19, and it isn’t something she wants and not getting it doesn’t change anything for her. Everyone in the hospital did get a bonus, she said.

COVID-19 has shown light on various professions at the hospital, she said.

“This hasn’t only impacted nurses and doctors,” Tieman said. “Paramedics and our laundry workers deal with it too. Everyone is important and we need everyone. It’s made our department closer. All we have is each other. We’ve had people come up to help us.”

What’s been hardest for Tieman is seeing patients not be able to have their families with them while in the hospital to limit potential COVID-19 exposure.

“I want people to know that we really do feel the struggle in not seeing loved ones,” Tieman said. “And we’re doing our best to take care of them.”

jhelfrich@shawmedia.com CGH Hospital Dr. Ashok Maini wonders where all of the non-COVID-19 patients have gone.

“I’ve seen an increase in COVID-19 cases and a decrease in cases like chest pain, asthma, COPD and heart congestion,” Maini said. “I’ve seen that decline and I think people are scared to come.

They’re scared they’ll get it here or if they leave their house. There’s a decline in visits for nonCOVID-19 patients.”

Maini works in internal medicine and has been with CGH for six years. He does intensive care and only inpatient medicine. He’s one of the few CGH doctors working with COVID-19 patients, and there are quite a lot of them, he said.

In the past 3-4 weeks, CGH has seen an increase in COVID-19 patients, Maini said. He’s also seen higher numbers in nursing homes which has increased hospital admissions.

“As a provider, it’s very concerning,” Maini

The New York Times, out of all cities, Sterling was right on top in the increased amount of COVID19 cases. Ours was high, 2-2.5 weeks ago. Then I saw numbers increase and it was alarming. It’s been exponential. I think we’re ready at CGH with testing.”

Even with the pandemic, Maini says his job still remains the same, treating patients. What concerns him is the ones that don’t come in or wait longer to do so. Some wait until they’re sicker due to fear of COVID-19 infection.

In the past weeks, Maini estimates COVID-19 has been 70 percent of his work. In terms of the

effects of COVID-19 on his future work, the loss of life due to the virus will simply mean seeing less elderly patients.

“Permanently, a lot of the chronically-sick patients we see periodically in nursing homes, a lot of them are dying now from COVID-19,” Maini said. “In the long run, we might not see as many nursing home patients in the near future.

That’s been hit the hardest. We’ll see less of those people.”

As far as positive changes in the medical community since the pandemic began, Maini said access to personal protective equipment like masks as well as ventilators has improved.

Maini wants the public to know that following guidelines like masking, social distancing and hand washing are imperative. Gathering without those practices at events like Thanksgiving “isn’t a good idea,” he said.

“Avoid social gatherings,” Maini said. “If we can do that, a vaccine should be here by March.

We can avoid a big outbreak again. There is a promising one from two drug companies. But we don’t have one yet.”

Maini has family of his own he can’t visit. His parents live in Chicago.

“I follow my own advice,” Maini said. “I could be an asymptomatic carrier. If I do visit people, I keep more than six feet apart. I haven’t seen my friends. There’s a lot of seclusion. That has affected a lot of us at the hospital.”

Festivities begin at 6 p.m. with Santa’s arrival and tree lighting at

Paul’s Park. Following the tree lighting there will be refreshments in the pavilion at the Polo Public Library.

The chamber has also scheduled horse and carriage rides in front of the Polo Public Library.

If you have a pre-K through fifth grader who likes to color, there will be a coloring contest. Coloring pages

Mt. Morris is bright again this Christmas season

Jerry Stauffer’s Lights On First show will hold its kickoff Friday, Nov. 27 at 5 p.m. at 214 W. 1st. St. with Santa and Mrs. Claus, carols and over 100,000 LED lights. There will be refreshments and cash donations will be taken for the Loaves and Fish Food Pantry. Social distancing will be practiced at the event and patrons can watch from their cars and listen on 97.1 FM. “I think it’s gone well with the weather,” Stauffer said. “We’re trying to make it as normal as possible with COVID-19. There will be food handled specially. We will social distance the line. The food pantry needs donations. It’s bigger this

year and it will look different. Some of it is in my neighbors’ yards.

Stauffer has worked with Ed Higley to create a map that shows decorated homes in Oregon and Mt. Morris.

The Higley Light Extravaganza at 309 W. Front St. will kick off the same Friday at 6:30 p.m. Cookies and drinks won’t be offered due to COVID-19, but a part of the block will be closed so people can watch 11 controllers control over 100 channels of lights to songs.

Donations will be taken for Happy Tails Humane Society.

“We hope that this will bring a little joy to you and your family because we all know we need it this year,” the event’s Facebook said.

Let Freedom Ring’s Christmas events are Dec. 5. The first annual Light up the Village Parade and

Tree Lighting will take place from 4-8 p.m, and craft vendors will be at the Coliseum and Northside BarBaQ will be serving to-go meals at the Senior Center.

The parade will take place at 5 p.m. with line up at 4:30 by the Church of Brethren. The Christmas tree lighting will follow the parade at the bandshell.

Send the official Let Freedom Ring Facebook page a message about being in the parade or to be a craft vendor. The parade is going to be a wave parade. Residents are

asked to decorate their cars and join in. Donations will be taken for next year’s 4th of July events.

Stauffer, a village trustee, said he’s excited some Christmas happenings will still take place in Mt. Morris and hopes it brings joy to residents, even in an unusual year.

“It’s kind of sad they’re encouraging families not to get together,” Stauffer said. “The family part is important and it will be different.

I know for a lot of people it will be.

Hopefully we get through this and keep people safe and move on.”

Acres of open space, fresh air and beautiful trees — it’s time to come and experience the sights, sounds and smells of the country and select your favorite Christmas tree.

The Oregon FFA Chapter is again partnering with Eagle Bluff at Sinnissippi Farm and Forest to provide a wide selection of Christmas trees, wreaths and garland.

COVID-19 protection guidelines set by the state of Illinois and the National Christmas Tree Association will be followed.

Weekend hours are: 8-9 a.m. for seniors and individuals with compromised health concerns and 9 a.m.

- 4 p.m. for the general public.

Hours for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays are 2-4 p.m. for the general public.

ith crisp, sunny and dry conditions, it was only fitting that this past weekend would have been ideal for what would have been the IHSA state football championships. From opening Friday night back in August to Thanksgiving, I can’t remember a fall when the weather has been so perfect for games.

Normally, this week’s column would have been a recap of what took place downstate. Since 2014, my Thanksgiving thoughts were more about Forreston than eating turkey.

When you cover a team throughout the regular season, it is a real treat when they advance to the state finals. By then, you have gotten to know the players, coaches and other familiar faces on the sidelines.

The longer the playoffs go on, the higher the stakes and more excitement. I can honestly say that high-school sporting championships that have a local team involved provide me with the greatest level of entertainment.

There is nothing better and for that, I am extremely grateful for being along for the ride on three recent state-title runs by Forreston.

With that in mind, here is a list of my 10 most memorable playoff games in no particular order among local teams in past decade:

2012: Forreston 35, Ottawa Marquette 34 (OT) As a relatively new convert to Cardinal football, I was impressed by the free-wheeling style of play and coach Denny Diduch’s willingness to gamble in the come-from-behind win on the road in the round of 16.

2013: Oregon 22, Wilmington 21

2018: Forreston 34, Lena-Winslow 28 With snowbanks surrounding Le-Win’s field, the Cardinal caught a couple breaks early and had a brilliant offensive game plan in what was a de facto state title game. The other thing that stood out was Forreston’s physicality against the big brutes of Le-Win.

After seeing AC’s talented offense run wild against Oregon two weeks earlier, I figured SV had an uphill climb in this 3A semifinal. Not only did Stillman match Aurora score-for-score, but incredibly pulled off more big plays in a freezing cold night on the road.

2019: Williamsville 46, Byron 42

Back and forth these two perennials powers went in 3A title game at NIU, with the Cardinals scoring in overtime on a controversial extra point run. For me, St. Joe was sentimental favorite, as it was my father’s first head coaching job and the current coach, Dick Duvall, was attempting to win his first state title after four previous runner-up finishes.

Seasoned observers from all over the state called this game the best of all eight classes in last year’s championships.

2014: Forreston 33, Stark County 19 This may go down on my favorite of the bunch

Sterling has had 11,222 tests and 1,448 cases. Rock Falls has had 5,586 tests and 860 cases. Dixon has had 13,306 tests and 1,364 cases.

Rural Renovators builds social media following

‘You can show them the secrets. But they have to care.’

Except for Kyle Stumpenhorst.

The Rural Renovators owner started taking pictures and videos years ago because he wanted current and future customers to know what they were getting. As social media evolved, so did Stumpenhorst’s Franklin Grove construction company. The Sterling resident took videos that showed his process. And people liked it.

“Clients loved it and could see what was happening,” Stumpenhorst said. “They understand what it takes. I saw it added value to the brand. People were searching for Rural Renovators.”

Rural Renovators specializes in post frame buildings, which are multi-use barn structures. A YouTuber wanted to build one in New York 2.5 years ago and found Stumpenhorst on social media and hired him to do it.

That YouTuber told Stumpenhorst he had to start a channel of his own. He did. Rural Renovators now has 449,000 subscribers on the video platforms.

“When people want to build a garage, they’ll look,” Stumpenhorst said. “I never expected it to blow up.

I wanted customers to know what they were getting. Now it’s a ton more. I get asked to travel around and shoot content with tool makers for educational things. A lot of people enjoy it.”

Stumpenhorst thinks social media’s biggest benefit is that it’s a community of like-minded individuals looking to elevate their craft.

He found others were more likely to share their trade secrets if he shared his.

Seeing comments and videos made by others on social media showed Stumpenhorst that in order to take the best picture or video, he had to build better.

“It’s moved me to look at the operation and skillset and improve,” Stumpenhorst said. “Old-time carpenters do the same old stuff and don’t help anybody. I get messages from people across the world that say I changed their lives and

Stumpenhost turns down 10-12 jobs each day. He works in the area, despite having offers to do jobs around the country due to his following.

Stumpenhorst recently went camping with his family in Virginia and was recognized from his videos.

Rural Renovators sells t-shirts on its site and the YouTube channel receives ad revenue due to its high number of viewers.

“Ad revenue is part of the YouTube scheme, it’s not my career,” Stumpenhorst said. “That’s icing on the cake. YouTube could be gone tomorrow and my work won’t change. I started selling the t-shirts because I couldn’t afford to send them to everyone who wanted one.

That’s what I used to do, but I started getting too many requests.”

Stumpenhorst used to think that competitors would take his secrets and use them against him if he put them out on social media. But that hasn’t happened. He actually wants someone to recommend when he can’t do a job. He recently told a customer he can’t do a job until next year.

Competitors may be able to replicate what Stumpenhorst does in his videos, but that isn’t all of the equation, he said.

“You can show the horse the water,” Stumpenhorst said. “You can show them the secrets. But they have to care.”

Stumpenhorst started in 2007 as a small remodeling contractor. He did bathrooms, kitchens and decks.

He eventually got bigger and built houses, which he didn’t enjoy as much. He doesn’t like being at long

jobs with contractors that don’t care as much as he does.

With post frames, Stumpenhorst can control the entire project and its quality. On a job, it’s just him working with one or two contractors. He has no employees.

Among Stumpenhorst’s favorite jobs was a high-end storage facility for a golf cart business in Amboy.

Rural Renovators builds passion projects like Oregon Music Garage, a music shop currently in progress.

The company builds hunting lodges, man caves and family fun barns with things like basketball courts.

Rural Renovators has won three building of the year awards.

“I think there’s a lot of contractors that will do a post frame,” Stumpenhorst said. “We specialize in it. I’m the salesman, owner and the guy swinging the hammer.”

Ryan Andrew Wayne Kekelis was born April 4, 1989 in Painesville, Ohio but lived most his life in Illinois; most recently Oregon.

Ryan loved politics, football, and trying new foods. He also loved to travel; to see new places and meet friends

RILEY DEGN SMITH-HANNA With deep sorrow, we announce that Riley Degn Smith-Hanna, 24, passed away on Wednesday, November 11, 2020.

Riley was born in 1996 and was the daughter of Hilary Hanna and Grant Smith.

JOHN B. ROE GRAND DETOUR — John B. Roe, known as Jack, of Grand Detour, Illinois, and Holmes Beach, Florida, died November 27, 2020, at the age of 78 from a very rare untreatable form of cancer known as Myelofibrosis.

He enjoyed horse racing, golf, reading and traveling. He attended Oregon, Illinois schools and graduated from Centre College of Kentucky in 1964.

He attended American University, George Washington University, with political honors and the University of Illinois Law School 1967.

He was elected Ogle County State’s Attorney in 1968 and was the youngest state’s attorney in Illinois history.

He taught Criminal Justice at Sauk Valley and Kishwaukee Colleges for 5 years. He was admitted to practice in the United State’s Supreme Court in 1969.

He served two terms in the Illinois Senate 1973-1979. While in the Senate he sponsored the Illinois Campaign Disclosure Act requiring candidates for public office

Hunters in Illinois killed a preliminary total of 47,147 deer during the first weekend of the Illinois Firearm Deer Season Nov. 20-22 compared with 50,173 deer taken during the first firearm weekend in 2019.

He practiced law in Rochelle from 1973-1995; first as JOHN B. ROE; then as ROE & MALLON; then ROE, MALLON & TESS.

He was Appointed Circuit Judge in 1995 by Illinois Supreme Court and was elected Circuit Judge in 1996.

After retiring as a judge in 2000, he was a member Governor’s Commission to Revise and Rewrite The Illinois Criminal Code; a member of The Board of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Springfield, Illinois; served as faculty at Stetson University College of Law, St. Petersburg, Florida, Adjunct Professor; was a Certified Florida County, Circuit and Family Mediator; was a Certified Mediator U.S. District Court Middle District of Florida and U.S. District Court Northern District of Illinois; was a Florida Bar Association Arbitrator and Mediator; was Certified Mediator and Arbitrator 12th Circuit, Florida and 15th Circuit, Illinois; was a Manatee County Florida Administration Hearing Officer; and was an arbitrator for New York and Nasdaq Stock Exchanges.

The Roe family has lived in Ogle County since 1837, his great grandfather John B. Roe was the first Doctor of Ogle County.

He is survived by his wife Phyllis of

47 years, who was his companion, love, best friend, and caretaker; son John B. “Ben” Roe IV (Irene) Roe, Grand Detour; step daughter Julie (Jim) Watt, Oregon, Illinois; grandchildren, John Benjamin Roe V and Mary Margaret Roe, Grand Detour; Justin Watt and Emma Watt, Chicago; Sister Ruth Roe Arth, San Francisco, California; and many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his mother Jane Gilbert Roe and father, John B. Roe II. Private family burial at Lighthouse Church Cemetery, Ogle County.

Unger Horner Funeral Home and Cremation services in Rochelle assisted the family with arrangements.

STATE POLICE lllinois State Police District One Commander, Captain Matthew Hodgdon, announces the results of Special Traffic Enforcement Patrols (sTEP) in Lee, Ogle and Whiteside Counties during November. These sTEPs allowed the ISP to provide increased enforcement for impaired

driving, occupant restraint, speeding, and distracted driving violations during the National “Click It or Ticket” Campaign.

Speeding accounted for 271 citations, 42 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, and 14 citations were

issued for distracted driving violations.

Troopers investigated 21 traffic crashes, assisted 114 motorists, and conducted 44 commercial vehicle inspections, seven of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. There were two arrests for driving under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated no fatal traffic crashes in October.

POLO POLICE Polo Police Chief Tim Rockwood released the following police activity.

Nov. 19 At approximately 10:12 p.m., officers observed a dark gray colored vehicle traveling southbound, with no lights on when required, in the 900 block of South Division Avenue.

The vehicle continued south bound into the 3000 block of Illinois South Illinois 26, where it merged into the northbound lane without signaling.

The vehicle continued south in the northbound lane before entering a field

east of Illinois 26.

The vehicle then reentered the roadway, crossing over both north and southbound lanes, before entering the west side ditch where the vehicle came to a stop, just north of Henry Road.

The driver was identified as Harrison Sarver Jakobs, 23, of Milledgeville.

Jakobs was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and drugs, possession of a controlled substance, operation of an uninsured vehicle, driving without lights when required, driving in the opposite direction, failure to signal when required and improper lane

usage. Further charges are pending.

Jakobs was given an I-Bond and released to KSB hospital staff for treatment.

Lindsey was released on an I-Bond.

Nov. 21 Jamie Lee Keefer, 38, Narvon, Pennsylvania, was cited at 7:06 p.m. for speeding 42 mph in a 35 mph speed zone.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following police activity.

Nov. 25 Alondra Rodriguez, 27, of Dixon, was arrested for driving without a valid license after being stopped by deputies on Interstate 39 near Illinois 64 for speeding. Rodriguez was released on a I-bond and will appear in court at a later date.

Nov. 26 Aljeuel Steel, 23, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended after being stopped by deputies on Interstate 39 near Illinois 64 for speeding. Steel was released on a I-bond and will appear in court at a later date.

Nov. 27 Dustin Doyle, 24, of Davis Junction was arrested at 10:22 p.m. for driving while license suspended and unlawful possession of cannabis after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 5,000 block of Illinois 251. Doyle was released on a notice to appear with a court date of Jan. 1 at 9 a.m.

Derrick Simmons, 40, of Leaf River was arrested at 6:17 p.m. for no valid driver’s license after deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 100 block of Main

Street in Leaf River. Simmons was released from the scene on an I-bond and will appear in court at a later date.

Erika Villalobos-Miller, 20, of Oregon was arrested at 9:33 a.m. for driving while license suspended after deputies conducted a traffic stop in the 6,000 block of Condon Road just into Winnebago County. Villalobos-Miller was also issued a citation for operating an uninsured vehicle. Villalobos-Miller was released on an I-Bond at the scene.

Mark J. Burdick, 34, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was arrested at 10:36 p.m. for driving while under the influence, leaving the scene of a property damage accident, no Valid driver’s license, illegal transportation of alcohol, no insurance, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage and unlawful possession of cannabis after deputies responded to a report of a hit and run that had originally occurred in the 5,400 block of South Mulford Road.

After the original report the offending vehicle fled southbound on Mulford Road until the driver lost control at the overpass of Interstate 88.

The vehicle came to rest after striking a guardrail. Upon deputies arrival at the scene of the crash, they determined that

the driver and a passenger had fled the scene on foot. Deputies deployed a K-9 unit to perform a track and the driver and passenger, who were located a short distance away hiding in a field and identified them as Burdick and Bobbie J. Braun, 50, of North Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Both were transported to the Rochelle Hospital by the Rochelle ambulance for treatment of minor injuries. Burdick was charged at the hospital and released on an I-Bond and will appear in court at a later date. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Creston Fire Department, Rochelle Police, and the Rochelle Ambulance.

Valerie Power, 29, of Aurora was arrested for driving while under the influence after being stopped by deputies on Illinois 64 near the Illinois 251 intersection. Power was held in lieu of bond at the jail.

Nov. 28 Pablo Reyes-Perez, 26, of Rockford was arrested at 11:20 p.m. for unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver after deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 39 at mile marker 99.

Reyes-Perez was also issued a citation for an equipment violation. Reyes-Perez

was given an I-bond with a return court date later next month.

At approximately 4:26 p.m. deputies responded to a single vehicle accident in the 14,000 block of West Sterling Road. An investigation determined that an eastbound vehicle driven by Adriana Wiggins, 17, of Polo, lost control and entered the north ditch. The vehicle then continued into a residential yard where it struck a tree. Minor injuries were reported. Deputies were assisted on scene by Polo Police and Polo Fire/ EMS. The accident remains under investigation.

Nov. 29 Elizabeth Bell, 44, of Rockford, was arrested at 2:14 a.m. for driving while under the influence and possession of a controlled substance after deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 1,500 block of West Montague Road. Bell was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 1 Megan Tracy, 38, of Davis Junction was arrested for a failure to appear warrant. Tracy had a bond of $1853.50 and remained in the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.
