OHS students to present fall play Oct. 16-18 Reservations required along with COVID-19 precautions Oregon High School students will present their fall play “The Customer is Always Wrong” Oct. 16-18 in the Oregon High School auditorium.

Show times are 7 p.m. on Oct. 16, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Oct. 17, and 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18.

The Customer is Always Wrong, written by Ian McWethy, follows five different high school students through their first jobs. At first, it doesn’t seem like rocket science to babysit, wait tables, pass out flyers, work at a movie theater, or be a telemarketer, but it’s not long before they find out that in the minimum-wage world, the customer is

king… a brutal, ruthless king.

“This funny, biting comedy is an ode to anyone who’s ever had to tell the worst customer in the world to “have a nice day,” OHS Choir Director Zach Hall said.

Tickets are available via reservation only; they are $8 for adults and $5 for students.

Only one person per party should send an email for reservation. In your email, you MUST include the names of everyone in your party and which show date(s) you plan to attend.

Space is limited and attending multiple shows may not be possible. Each group will be seated 6 feet apart from other groups.

Payment will only be collected at the door, and all attendees will also be required to self-certify that they have no COVID-19 symptoms and have not

been in contact with anyone exposed to COVID-19.

Masks must be worn at all times.

There is a limit to the amount of people that can attend each show, so be sure to reserve your seats as soon as possible!

“OHS’s fall play is unique to other productions because it is entirely student-led. This means that student leaders are in charge of choosing the play, directing rehearsals, building the set, and organizing for the community,” Hall said.

This year’s play is directed by Claudia Reckamp and produced by Lydia Cermak.

“The cast has been rehearsing since the beginning of school, so come see the hard work they have put in for this enjoyable comedy,” Hall said.

Donations needed for holiday dinners The Mt. Morris Loaves and Fish Food Pantry is seeking donations to provide holiday meal boxes to local families in need.

As in previous years, the pantry will be providing Thanksgiving meal boxes.

The meal boxes, made possible in partnership with Northern Illinois Food Bank, contain a turkey, potatoes, stuffing, gravy, canned fruit and vegetables, coffee and dessert – enough to feed a family of eight.

For the first time in the pantry’s history, Mt. Morris Loaves and Fish Food Pantry will also be providing Christmas meal boxes to those in need as well.

The Christmas meal box will contain a ham and all of the trimmings to feed a family of eight.

A $16 donation will allow Mt. Morris

Loaves and Fish Food Pantry to provide a local family the opportunity to enjoy a traditional holiday meal with their loved ones this holiday season.

A donation of $32 will provide both a Thanksgiving meal and a Christmas meal for a family of eight.

Donations are needed by Nov. 15. The Thanksgiving meal boxes will be distributed on Nov. 23 and the Christmas meal boxes will be distributed on Dec. 18.

“We need your help to make this project successful,” said Ferol Labash, board secretary for the pantry. “The pantry hopes to raise $4,800 above our regular donations in order to purchase 150

Thanksgiving boxes and 150 Christmas boxes. Will you help us reach the goal to provide each family in need with a Thanksgiving and Christmas meal?”

Any donations received above the amount needed to purchase the meal boxes will be used to purchase food for the pantry.

Mt. Morris Loaves and Fish Food Pantry provides food to an average of over 350 individuals each month. The pantry is a partner with Northern Illinois Food Bank which provides food to food pantries and feeding programs across 13 Illinois counties.

OCHD: ‘We’ve gotten a number of complaints from all over the county’

BY JEFF HELFRICH ​​​​​​​jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Some Ogle County businesses opted to defy the state’s COVID-19 mitigations that took effect on Saturday.

The mitigations include not allowing indoor dining and drinking for bars and restaurants within Region 1, which includes Ogle County.

“We’ve gotten a number of complaints from all over the county,” Ogle County Health Department Public Administrator Kyle Auman said on Tuesday. “And it’s not just bars and restaurants.

There are complaints from childcare facilities and others. We’ve been following up and documenting them.”

Auman said notices of noncompliance have been issued so far and no closure orders have been issued yet. He called the defiance of businesses and patrons “surprising.”

Ogle County is still above the eight percent rolling positivity percentage that caused the mitigations. If the county and region don’t get down to 6.5 percent in 11 days, there could be more mitigation tactics.

“They need to understand the long-term impacts that will hurt all of us,” Auman said. “I don’t see a quick resolution right now. We’re seeing big numbers still. There could be a decrease in group sizes. Salons and other places could be closed. Our health care systems may only be able to do essential procedures.”

Auman said a majority of over 300 county businesses followed the mitigations. A “small handful” did not, he said.

“The small group could have a drastic negative impact,” Auman said. “Several are adamant that they haven’t had any cases in their businesses, but that’s simply not true. People self report and often don’t tell us everywhere they’ve been.”

The OCHD, which typically consists of a staff of 13 people, does not have enough resources to police the complaints it has gotten, Auman said.

He believes public health has been underfunded for decades.

“We have a lot on our plate,” Auman said. “It’s been a struggle. Myself and my leadership team have been working around the clock for five months and it’s exhausting. It’s daunting. And we don’t enjoy being the bad guys.”

The state police contacted Auman on Monday and said it is on board with enforcing the mitigations. Auman said ISP has not responded to any regional businesses yet, that he knows of. It has in other regions, he said.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said last week that his office does not plan to enforce any of the state COVID-19 mitigations at local businesses.

VanVickle’s office has not enforced any of the state’s COVID-19 guidelines since the start of the pandemic and released a statement on May 14 explicitly stating that. He’s said that there is

“Having local law enforcement would help,” Auman said. “I don’t want to comment on whether it disappoints me that they won’t do it.”

Auman believes the pandemic will be around “for the long haul.” The current high numbers coming out and low expected vaccination rates when it becomes available don’t paint a good picture, he said.

“If we go for natural herd immunity, which I hear theorized from a lot of people, it’d take several years just for Ogle County,” Auman said.

“It’s taken us 7-8 months to get 800 cases. We have 51,000 people. I anticipate dealing with this into 2022 and 2023.”

One Ogle County restaurant owner said he plans to follow the order, despite the impact it will have on his business.

“We’re going to close,” Jeff Ajvazi, owner of Spring Valley Restaurant in Oregon, said. “We’ll do delivery and pick up. We didn’t consider staying open. It’s very bad. But what are we going to do? I don’t know how much we’re going to lose.

I would expect 70 or 80 percent of our business.”

Suspension of in-school classes at Byron school Three positive cases, dozens of quarantines

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Mary Morgan Elementary School in Byron is temporarily ceasing in-person instruction for two weeks beginning “in response to increased COVID-19 cases and quarantines, a press release from School District Superintendent Buster Barton said Oct. 5.

Students who attend Byron Middle School and Byron High School are not affected by the temporary shutdown. The only students transitioning from in-person instruction to remote learning are elementary school students.

“We had three confirmed positive cases and dozens of quarantines last week at Mary Morgan Elementary School,” Barton wrote in the release.

“Our hope was to avoid a temporary shutdown, but on Monday afternoon, we received new data from the Ogle County Health Department indicat-

The district felt the “adaptive pause” to ensure that in-person instruction can be offered as long as possible during the pandemic.

During the closure the school will be conducting additional cleaning and disinfecting.

The school district and the OCHD are asking families to limit interaction outside of the home and to monitor students’ symptoms closely.

“OCHD has been working closely with the Byron School District

since school has resumed this year,” OCHD Public Health Administrator Kyle Auman said. “The district has been doing a great job attempting to isolate individual situations to keep students and staff safe. We believe that a two-week adaptive pause to in-person learning is necessary to ensure that we control viral spread within the schools.”

Auman said the OCHD is in close contact with the schools every day.

In the case of Mary Morgan elementary, there were potential exposures in multiple classrooms, he said. This was the first COVID-19-related clo-

sure of a school in the county. OCHD recommended the pause to “burn out” the virus, Auman said.

An uptick in cases in recent weeks in the community as a whole, as well as businesses and patrons defying the state’s recent mitigation, have Auman and the OCHD concerned for area schools.

“It’s a large concern,” Auman said.

“It creates a lot more work for us with contact tracing. There’s exponential growth. Knowing there’s significant spread locally, it’s certainly a concern. It could get out of our control. The defiance in the community, it’s a challenge.”

The district will be implemented a remote learning training day on Oct. 6. All in-person students at Mary Morgan Elementary are scheduled to return to school for in-person instruction on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Barton said he understands the shutdown will cause families to be inconvenienced, but he believes it’s the best long-term solution.

“We appreciate the support from our families and community while we navigate this challenging time,” Barton said.

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@ogleountynews.com Oregon residents missing their annual Autumn on Parade festival fix got a bit of relief last weekend with three smaller events.

“I am missing Autumn on Parade,” said Gary Myers as he waited in his car for 10 Oregon Lions Club pork chop dinners. “I always have to have my pork chop sandwich at Autumn on Parade.”

The service club is one of the non profit groups who make up the popular festival’s food court on the Ogle County Courthouse Square the first full weekend in October.

This year’s AOP would have marked the festival’s 50th anniversary, but the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent restrictions to try and stop the spread of the virus, prompted the all-volunteer committee to cancel the 2020 event.

The two-day festival attracts thousands to Oregon offering a parade, car and tractor show, kids events, and an Olde English Faire at Stronghold castle among other events.

Myers and his passenger took advantage of the Lions Club’s drive-thru option in the west end of the Oregon SuperValu parking lot to make sure they at least got their pork chop sandwich.

“These are all for my family,” Myers said.

Teresa Bunger of Ashton also stopped by for two dinners. “It’s kinda sorta like AOP,” she said.

“We’ve been busy,” said Lion Ron Arneson as he and other Lions grilled their specialty. “It’s been steady.”

Nine miles to the east of town, Hidden Timber Gardens hosted an Open House and Outdoor Market complete with pumpkins and several booths while following social distancing rules and monitoring attendance.

Stillman Valley High School’s National Honor Society was one of the booths helping spread the fall cheer with its “Build-A-Scarecrow” booth.

“We’ve been trying to figure out how to do a fundraiser this year and a lot of our usual options have been taken away,” said Michelle Rogers, the club’s adviser. “So as long we were going to be outside we came up with this.”

The “this” involved SVHS students helping visitors create their own scarecrow by offering clothes, wooden stakes, straw and a pumpkin for a head.

“We’re missing everything this year and its kind of sad,” said

Tabitha. “At least we have a little event like this to go to today.”

On a path through the “hidden timber” Sheila Warnken and her sister Teresa Hill were helping steady their two-year-old grandson and grandnephew Brantley Roberts of Mt. Morris as he walked past plants, flowers and more booths.

“We’re definitely missing Autumn on Parade,” said Warnken.

John Kelley was a prisoner at Andersonville Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

BY OTTO DICK John Kelley a Civil War soldier from Oregon was a prisoner at Andersonville located in the state of Georgia. This camp held more than 45,000 soldiers during its 14 month existence.

More than 13,000 died of starvation, overcrowding and disease.

Today this is a National Historic site serving as a memorial to all American Prisoners of War. Visitors are able to explore the National Prisoner of War Museum and the Confederate Andersonville Prison Site.

The Andersonville Cemetery created in 1865 is the permanent resting side for 13,000 Union Soldiers, 460 grave sites are marked unknown.

Over 800 deaths are listed from Illinois.

John Kelley served in Company G of the 74th Illinois Infantry stationed at Rockford. John was captured at Jonesboro, Ga. Dept. 1, 1864.

After he was released he returned to Oregon. The 1905 directory shows him living at 707 Jackson Street. His brothers Michael and Patrick also served in the Civil War. Their parents came to Ogle County in 1844 and settled in Rockvale Township. They purchased their land from the government in the early 1840’s. Patrick Sr. and Mary had 10 children.

One hundred and 60 boys and men from Oregon served in the Civil War. They are listed on the Lorado Taft Monument located on the Ogle County Court House Lawn.

Originally the names listed on the Monument were displayed on the third floor walls of the Ogle County Courthouse.

In 1864 Camp Sumter now known as Andersonville Prison, was built 1,620 feet long and 779 feet wide, to house about 10,000 men.

This camp was surrounded by a 15 foot high wall constructed of logs..

Inside this wall was a line known as the “dead line.” This 19 foot wide strip of land kept the prisoners away from the stockade walls.

Around the dead line were towers known as pigeon roosts where confederate soldiers kept watch. Anyone crossing or even touching the dead line was shot and killed by the soldiers in the roosts.

After the Civil War ended and Andersonville closed about 500 survivors were transported to hospitals in Memphis. Up to 300 of them died from burns or exposure.

In addition to the horrors the prisoners were subjected to at Andersonville Union Soldiers from Andersonville Prison died when the Steamship Sultana carrying soldiers north on the Mississippi River to Illinois, Indiana and Ohio exploded. Fifteen hundred passengers lost their lives making it the largest maritime U.S. maritime disaster.

The Taft Memorial on the Court House Lawn lists Ogle County men who served in wars occurring on U.S. Soil.

Three men who served in the Revolutionary War are buried in Ogle County. Oregon Founder John Phelps served in the War of 1812 and is buried at Riverview Cemetery.

Blackhawk War casualties are

listed at the Stillman Valley Memorial. The Civil War was a horrible war with Americans killing Americans and the conditions at the overcrowded Andersonville Prison were unbelievable.

Following this war Captain Witz Camp Director was arrested, tried and hanged as a war criminal.

The Civil War occurred 27 years after Oregon was founded. Our pioneers braved and overcame the challenges of establishing their homes

in Ogle County. Then comes the Civil War with their sons going to war where they were lined up in a row out in the open against a row of Confederate Soldiers.

When you see Taft’s Memorial at the Ogle County Courthouse remember an estimated over 600,000 Americans lost their lives during the Civil War. Today the City of Rockford’s population is 146,526.

received a phone call from Bill Burkardt and he filled me in on the train wreck north of Polo. Later LeRoy Toms called and said to check with Bill since that all happened on some of his property.

Bill had a date of June of 1964 or 1965 so we had a place to start and Bill definitely remembered the occasion. It was early in the morning and the noise made one wonder what was happening.

As the train got off the track, they hit the railroad ties which made a noise hard to describe. Perhaps a rumbling sound. It made one run to the window as the earth seemed to shake a bit.

It took several days for the cleanup and Bill remembers setting up a grill and feeding some of the workers and they were very appreciative of a hot meal. Workers came from Clinton, Iowa and Freeport, Illinois.

Many of the railroad ties were left at the site since they were damaged and they were utilized by the Brantner and Burkardt farms.

Bill said the only way to get to the accident site was across Burkardt’s property and many people just walked across his property to see what was going on. It was a busy place for a while with people coming and going.

SPECIAL EVENTS Two electronic recycling events scheduled for Ogle County residents this month The next two Ogle County Solid Waste Management electronic recycling drop offs will be on Saturday, Oct.17 from 8 a.m. to noon and Friday, Oct. 23 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the County Annex Building, 909 Pines Road.

There are a limited number of permits for each event and the deadline for acquiring a permit is noon on the Wednesday prior to each event.

These electronics recycling events are for Ogle County residents only and each permit is valid for a specific date.

The advance permitting system was implemented,

beginning in August 2020, in response to extremely long lines and safety issues at the June and July electronics collection events.

Users of the program have expressed gratitude to the OCSWMD for the permit system, which has resulted in reduced wait times and a more efficient drop-off experience.

Accepted items include all televisions, computers, computer monitors, computer hardware and cables, printers, FAX machines, copiers, scanners, video gaming items, VCR-DVD players, cable and satellite boxes, cell phones, tablets, laptops, radios, stereo equipment,

digital clocks, holiday light strands, extension cords, phone systems, rechargeable batteries, CFL bulbs, and printer ink cartridges.

Non-acceptable items are: Items smoke detectors, coffee makers, toasters, bread makers, vacuum cleaners, fans, heaters, air conditioners or dehumidifiers, lamps, power tools, alkaline batteries, LED bulbs, exercise equipment, medical equipment of any kind, toys or drones, business or institutional electronic items, and any packaging from electronic items such as boxes, plastic wrapping, and Styrofoam.

Remove all batteries from devices, discard the alkaline batteries, and recycle the rechargeable ones at the event.

‘Bago team embodies what prep sports should be W

hen it comes to royalty in Illinois high school cross country, the one school that stands out is Elmhurst York and its 28 state boys titles. But, if the totality of boys and girls programs were put together, it’s hard to argue against Winnebago.

Primarily for that reason, coaches Joe and Janet Erb were recently named to the Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall-of-Fame.

They have a pair of boys state titles and three top 3 finishes in cross country at Winnebago. The girls side has been even better with five straight titles from 2005-09 and a dominating state win in 2019.

The ITCCCA is a tough HOF to get into, with only 6 candidates selected this year out of 40 nominations. Add in thousands of coaches over the years and the odds of making the cut are rare.

Here at Oregon, we are fortunate in that Joe Mortimer, Art Carlson and Doug Engle are members, with Jim Spratt a likely shoo-in.

A husband-wife combination like the Erbs is almost unheard of.

Indeed, it is more than gaudy stats that make Joe and Janet Erb special. One of the criteria for selection by the ITCCCA is character. “They had such a huge impact on my life and are two charismatic, caring people,� said former all-stater Hayley (Thomas) Ness. “They had a spe-

cial way of creating a bond with you that makes you run your best. They were like that with every single person. Because of their words and action, you felt important.�

Unlike other more cut-throat sports, Joe and Janet are willing to do all they can to promote cross country. “The Erbs are a legend around here, but are willing to help any of us develop our cross country programs,� said Oregon coach Tim Gipper. “They have a true love of running and are great people to be around. Because of them, all of us are better.�

Both the Erbs had the benefit of growing up in the Indian program, with Janet coming over from Pecatonica as part of a coop and Joe a local since he was one year old. It was cross country where they became high-school sweethearts. “When they went away to different colleges, they separated for awhile, but running brought them back together,� said Jeremy Stevens, the

greatest runner to come out of the fabled program. “Now, it has become full circle with their own kids running for them.�

Under Roger Fredrickson and the Erbs, the girls have 13 state titles, four more than second-best Naperville North. Unfortunately, there will be no state meet this fall to make it No. 14.

After last season ended, Joe Erb made it clear that the 2020 team had the potential to be the best ever in 1A. With the entire group coming back, they could have competed with the best in 2A and 3A. “Winnebago has the talent to run with anyone in the state,� said Mike Newman, state cross country expert.

What has transpired in Winnebago is what prep sports ultimately should be about. There is an environment of love and respect between coach and athlete. That’s obvious by watching the team conduct itself at meets, be it performing at the highest levels on the biggest stages, teamwork or exhibiting what local meet official Galen Bennett calls outstanding sportsmanship. “The hall of fame is without a doubt, a huge honor,� Joe Erb said. “But, for me it has always been and will always be about relationships with my athletes. I couldn’t be prouder of the adults they have become.�

No COVID-19 rule enforcement will be done by Ogle County

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle says his office won’t be enforcing the state’s new COVID-19 mitigation rules that started Saturday, but the Illinois State Police could in the area.

Due to an uptick in COVID-19 cases, the office of Gov. JB Pritzker has ceased allowing indoor dining and drinking in the region indefinitely. Pritzker said last Friday that ISP will be in the Rockford region this weekend enforcing public health rules.

“The Sheriff’s Office won’t be going around closing any places,” VanVickle said. “The state police, I suppose it could occur here. They would have to go through the state’s attorney’s office at some point.

Other state sheriffs have come out with stances similar to VanVickle,

such as Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana.

VanVickle said Friday he hasn’t spoken to the Illinois State Police regarding possible enforcement in the area over the weekend and going forward. He also said he hasn’t received any information on the issue from the state as a whole.

“It doesn’t change our operations,” VanVickle said. “We will continue to enforce criminal and traffic laws. We’ve helped businesses answer questions on things like occupancy, but that’s about it.”

Ogle County businesses such as Sledgehammer’s bar near Oregon and Cornett’s Chana Tap in Chana stayed opened over the weekend, defying the Governor’s orders.

A meeting was held in Rockford last Thursday evening by attorney Thomas DeVore of Sorento, Illinois, where he advised area bar and restaurant owners that they have no legal obligation to follow the state order.

“We have no issue with businesses operating like that,” VanVickle said.

Thirty new cases were reported Monday that included the weekend’s numbers. Eighty-five new cases have come in the past week.

Ages and locations of the individuals that test positive are not being released to protect their privacy.

Minor injuries in school bus accident near Polo

The Illinois Department of Public Health site said Tuesday that there are 418 cases in the 61068 zip code that includes Rochelle, Creston and White Rock.

Three minors were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries after a school bus carrying East Dubuque’s cross country team was in a single vehicle accident in rural Ogle County on Oct. 1.

At 6:12 p.m. deputies responded to Illinois 64 and Illinois 26 for a report of the crash.

The bus, driven by Melvin Ehrler, 74, of East Dubuque was traveling west on Illinois 64 and failed to stop at the stop sign at Illinois 26. The bus traveled approximately 423 feet into a grass field and came to a stop, the release said.

Polo Fire Chief Tony Karrow assisted at the scene and said the accident may have been caused by the sun being in the driver’s eyes.

“I’m assuming he ran the stop sign because he couldn’t see,” Karrow said. “It went through the Dogwood Inn lot and through a reten-

tion pond. It didn’t have water in it, though. It went down and up the bank on the other side. It stayed on its wheels. The shocks were broken by the crash. The bus was not driveable.”

Two of the injured people were transported to KSB Hospital in Dixon and the third was taken to CGH in Sterling. Eleven minors were on the bus, a press release said.

Parents picked up the rest of the uninjured children from the scene after they were checked by medical personnel. The bus was en route to East Dubuque after the team had a meet in Oregon.

Ehrler was issued citations for disregarding a traffic control device and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com A bad day from a good player can sometimes sink a boys golf team come regional time, but Sterling Newman was able to escape that unwanted fate Tuesday thanks to its strong depth.

The Comets overcame a rough day from their No. 1 player and took second place at the nineteam Class 1A Oregon Regional at Silver Ridge Golf Course.

Riverdale (337) and Newman (340) punched their tickets to the season-ending Spring Valley Sectional next Wednesday at Spring Creek Golf Course. There will be no state tournament this season, due to COVID-19.

A new scoring system in which players entered scores on their cell phones allowed all involved the ability to keep track of how individuals and teams stood in real time. It made for some high drama on the last few holes, as Riverdale, Newman and Fulton, which was third at 342, battled it out for two team sectional berths.

The top two teams and four individuals (plus ties) not on those teams advance to the sectional.

That will be Riverdale, Newman, Fulton’s top three, as well as Erie-Prophetstown’s Bryce Rosenow and Amboy’s Wes Wilson, who each had 88 to tie with Newman’s Palmer for 10th place.

Dixon boys golfers sixth at BNC Meet The Dixon Dukes placed sixth at the Big Northern boys golf meet on Oct. 1 at Timber Pointe in Poplar Grove, while Oregon finished ninth.

The Dukes scored a 394, with Oregon firing a 405. Byron won the team title with a 345, two strokes better than runner-up Rockford Christian and six clear of third-place Stillman Valley.

Rockford Christian’s Josh Beard was medalist with a 78, three shots better than second-place Maison Brandt of Byron.

Jarrett Dietrich paced the Hawks with a 93, while Isaac Kaltenbrun (103), Brady Davis (104) and Jackson Werren (105) also scored for Oregon. Miley Smith (112) and Isaac Reber (119) played for the Hawks.

Cross Country Panther girls run past Hawks: Erie-Prophetstown and Oregon tied at 28 in a three-team meet at Oregon Park West, but the Panthers won the sixth-runner tiebreaker to take the victory.

East Dubuque’s Hailey Heiar won the race in 19:57.3, but the Warriors only had one other runner.

Erie-Prophetstown’s Dylan Chandler was second in 22:00.8, then Oregon’s Leah Watters (22:07.5), Faith Marquardt (22:17.1) and Katlyn Ramirez (22:26.4) went 3-4-5.

STATE POLICE Illinois State Police District announces September activity Illinois State Police District 1 Commander, Captain Matthew Hodgdon, has announced District 1 enforcement figures and activity for September.

Illinois State Police District 1 Troopers issued 426 citations, 401 written warnings, and made 24 criminal arrests during the month of September.

Speeding accounted for 236 citations, 34 citations were issued for occupant restraint violations, eight citations were

issued for distracted driving violations and eight citations were issued for Scott’s Law (Move Over violation).

Troopers investigated 20 traffic crashes, assisted 111 motorists, and conducted 76 commercial vehicle inspections, eight of which were placed out-of-service for safety reasons. There were five arrests for driving while under the influence.

District 1, which encompasses Carroll, Lee, Ogle, and Whiteside counties, investigated no fatal traffic crashes in September.

Leila P. Stebbins, 20, of Polo, was cited for speeding 41 mph in a 30 mph speed zone. She was released on an I-Bond.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville reports the following police activity.

Sept. 28 Issac D. Reber, 16, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 2:53 p.m. for speeding, 46 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of Adams Street.

Sept. 29 At 8:36 a.m., police investigated a one vehicle traffic crash where a 2000 Buick driven by Dominick J. Wetzell, 17, of Oregon, struck a yield sign at the intersection of Depot and Scott Streets.

Wetzell was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Wylee L. Rice, 17, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 2:51 p.m. for disobeying a stop sign. This violation occurred at the intersection of S. 10th and Adams Streets.

Gavin E. Gallagher, 16, of Oregon, was issued citations at 3:05 p.m. for speeding, 53 mph in a 30 mph zone, and graduated driver’s license violation of more

than one passenger in vehicle. These violations occurred in the 1000 block of Adams Street.

Sept. 30 Dylan M.C. Cremeans, 17, of Oregon, was issued citations at 3:01 p.m. for speeding, 54 mph in a 30 mph zone, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

These violations occurred in the 1000 block of Adams Street.

Danny E. Roos, 63, of Oregon, was arrested at 4:16 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a fleeing to elude charge.

Roos was also issued a citation for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Roos was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 100 block of S. Daysville Road.

Jill J. Bier, 62, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 4:57 p.m. for improper lane usage. This violation occurred in the 300 block of W. Washington Street.

Oct. 2 At 1:23 a.m., police responded to a

disturbance call 700 E. Washington Street, resulting in the arrest of Anthony L. Young, 44, of Oregon, for domestic battery and resisting a peace officer.

Also arrested was Taylor R. Young, 22, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Both were transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 9:45 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of S. 2nd and Clay Streets involving a 2004 Pontiac driven by Wylee L. Rice, 17, of Oregon, and a 2007 Toyota driven

by Carter R. Fruin, 19, of Mt. Morris.

Rice was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Deven L. Kenerson, 17, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 3 p.m. for illegal screeching/squealing of tires. This violation occurred in the 1100 block of Jefferson Street.

Oct. 4 At 5:36 p.m., police responded to a one-vehicle traffic crash on the Washington Street bridge where a 2008 Toyota driven by Adrianne M. Suits, 34, of Oregon, struck the guard rail of the

bridge. Suits was subsequently arrested for DUI drugs and also charged with possession of a controlled substance, She was also issued citations for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Suits was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Seven parking citation and 10 verbal warnings were issued Sept. 28 - Oct. 4.

DENVER, CO. —Thomas Francis Hanson passed away peacefully on October 4, 2020 surrounded by loved ones.

Tom was born Nov. 23, 1925 on the family farm near Parnell, Iowa to parents Thomas and Mary Hanson.

The youngest of eight children, Tom grew up on the farm until serving in Germany at the end of World War II. While in the service, he attended the historic Nuremberg Trails.

After his discharge, he attended St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa and graduated in 1949. On June 20, 1951, Tom married the love of his life, Sally Sweet.

He worked for Tri-City Tires in Davenport until he and Sally moved to Mt. Morris in 1959, where they raised their

LOWELL G. CARDEN GREENVILLE, N.C. – Lowell Gene Carden passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2020.

Gene was born at home on July 31, 1937, in Yeaman, Kentucky to Chester Carden and Hazel Foreman.

He was raised by his mother Hazel and stepfather, Russell Smith, in Polo, Illinois.

Affectionately known by classmates as “Chogey,” he graduated from Polo

ROGER D. GARRISON POLO – Roger Dale Garrison, 71, died on October 2, 2020, with his family by his side.

Roger was born to Esther and Clay Garrison on February 16, 1949, and lived the majority of his life in Polo.

He was married to Patricia “Pat” Lawson of Ashton on Oct. 10, 1981, in an outdoor ceremony at Camp Emmaus.

Together the couple raised three children, Jo (Larry “Ben”) Bittinger of Polo, Keith (Katie) Chesnut of Polo, and Molly Sides of Rockford.

He was affectionately known as “Pa” by his six grandchildren, who were his

DALE B. HALL POLO – Dale B. Hall passed away September 28, 2020 at Swedish American Hospital after a short illness.

He was born Dec. 31, 1942, in Highland Park, the son of Monroe and Dorothy (deceased 1972) Hall and stepson of Nancy Hall.

Dale married Louise M. Landreth on June 27, 1964. He is survived by Louise

family.

Tom began working with Sally’s father, Don Sweet, at Sweet Advertising Agency in Mt. Morris, taking over the agency in 1968.

He retired in 1989 after many successful years.

Tom and Sally’s retirement included time at their lake home in Friendship, Wisconsin and traveling to Destin, Florida during the winter.

To be near their daughters and families, Tom and Sally moved to Denver in 2005 and spent many years enjoying Colorado.

Tom was one of a kind. A humble man of deep faith, he quietly believed in helping those in need.

He was proud of his Irish heritage and had an engaging personality and great sense of humor.

He loved the Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye football, walking for exercise and singing when the spirit moved him.

But most of all, he loved his family and God. Tom will be missed for his kind spirit, optimistic nature and his abundant love of family and friends.

Tom is survived by his three children, Bob (Diana) Hanson of Oregon, Barb (Jeff) Hanson of Denver and Jan (John) Kilgore of Denver, and four grandchildren, Tom (Sandy) Hanson, Park City, Utah, Katie (Sean) Hassett of Centennial, Colorado, Mike (Kita) Hanson of Forreston, and JJ Kilgore of Phoenix, Arizona, two step-grandchildren, Nicholas (Alex) Gallardo of Chicago, and Adam Gallar-

do, USAF stationed in England, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Clement, Joe and George, sisters Norma, Catherine, Helen and Laurine and his wife, Sally.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all the wonderful people at Montage Hills Assisted Living facility.

A funeral mass will be held to honor Tom on Thursday, Oct. 8, at 10 a.m. at Church of the Rise Christ in Denver.

He enjoyed fishing, travelling, and

umpiring baseball and basketball games during his off-time.

Gene is preceded in death by his stepfather, Russell; mother, Hazel; father Chester, brother; Larry, and son, Michael.

He is survived by his sons, Jeff, Steve (and wife Cindy), John (and wife Angel),

and Marcus (and wife Claire); sister, Sherri Linker; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jimmy, Matt, Emily, Mallory, Brielle, Jayce, Eli, Maura, and Finn; and many great-grandchildren.

A private service is planned for immediate family. At his request, Gene will be cremated, and his ashes spread near his boyhood home in rural Kentucky.

He worked for 19 years as a print press operator at Quebecor Printing in Mt. Morris.

In retirement, he enjoyed working part-time at Smokin’ Gun Worx in Forreston. Throughout his life he frequented

antique shows and flea markets as a vendor in the northern Illinois area, and was widely respected as an expert in the field of antique traps, tools and firearms.

Over the last several years, Roger converted his expertise into educational outreach, dressing as a “mountain man” and teaching area youth about pioneer life and survival.

He was a lifetime member both of the National Rifle Association and the Tri-County Gun Club.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Melvin.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; his three children; brother, Bob (Rose)

Garrison of Roseville, California; brother Bruce (Penelope) Garrison of Morton; and grandchildren Hayden and Garrett Bittinger, Cole and Knox Chesnut, and Raine and Ila Sides; along with nieces, nephews, and twin grandnephews, who will all dearly miss their Pa and Uncle Yup-Yup. A memorial will be established at the Tri-County Gun Club.

Condolences may be sent to his wife, Pat Garrison, at her home in Polo.

A celebration of his life will be planned at a later date.

Dale was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church for 55 years.

There will be a private funeral Mass on Oct. 10.

OBITUARIES RITA A. LAWTON POLO – Rita Ann Lawton, 92, of Polo, passed away on September 27, 2020 at Polo Rehab and Health Center with her children at her side.

MICHAEL SMYTH FORRESTON – It is with great sadness that the family of Michael Smyth announce his passing on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. Michael “Leroy” Smyth passed away at his home in Forreston, at the age of 65, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Rita is survived by her sister, Jean Lawton; daughter, Dorothy (Mark)

Dusing; son, Dan (Cathy) Lawton; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Rita retired from head cook at the Polo schools, where she worked for over 25 years. She then spent the next 18 years employed at PNC, Inc. in Polo, and an additional 10 years as a volunteer at Centennial Elementary School.

Rita was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

She had a huge love for animals, and she dearly loved her grandchildren, never missing a single activity they were involved in.

A memorial has been established in Rita’s name and may be directed to Polo Family Funeral Home, 110 E. Dixon St. Polo, Illinois 61064.

A private mass and burial will take place.
