Board approves purchase of police vehicle Village Hall to reopen Monday, masks required

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Mt. Morris Village Board unanimously approved funds up to $28,000 to buy a new police truck at its Tuesday meeting.

The city has two vehicle options, one

being a white 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 at state bid pricing. The other is a 2019 black vehicle that’s outfitted the same way and $3,000-$4,000 less than the 2020.

Either one can be afforded at the $28,000 number, which is budgeted for this year.

“Everyone is used to us having a white police vehicle,” Trustee Jerry Stauffer said. “Maybe this black one could give us the element of surprise.”

Village Hall It was decided at the meeting that Vil-

lage Hall will be fully reopened on Monday after the state enters into its fourth phase of reopening on Friday. Plexiglass will be installed at the counter and signage will be up stating that masks are required to be worn inside.

It was also mentioned that the next board meeting on July 11 will be held in the Village Hall chambers. Recent meetings have been done online via Zoom to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Chamber to host Phase 4 opening event Ribbon cutting planned in front of City Hall on Saturday, June 27

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com With the state’s Phase 4 reopening set to begin on June 26, the Oregon Area Chamber of Commerce will be closing something on Saturday—a street.

Business owners and the community are invited to join the Chamber on Saturday, June 27 at 8:45 a.m. in front of Oregon City Hall in the 100 block of North Third Street, to celebrate the reopening with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

Phase 4 allows some indoor dining and drinking as well as gatherings up to 50.

“I’m emotional just thinking about it,” Chamber Executive Director Liz Vos said. “We’ve worked hard towards this.

To see people and have this moment where it’s like, ‘hey, we made it.’”

Attendees are invited to go to the Oregon Coliseum afterwards for the Chana School Foundation Sale. No more than 50 are allowed inside and visitors must wear masks. Local musicians and artists, invited by Aireloom Music Studio, will perform on the Coliseum lawn.

“Spend the day perusing the town wide garage sales, visit our boutiques, listen to live music, and grab a bite to

eat at any of our area restaurants,” a Chamber press release said.

Some nonprofits will also have tables on the Coliseum lawn.

“The creators didn’t stop creating during COVID-19,” Vos said. “They wrote new songs and made new art and they have things to share with the community.”

Vos said she’s proud of the way area businesses have done in phase three with getting creative with outdoor dining and drinking and adhering to guidelines. She hopes to continue the local economy’s road back to normalcy from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I am so thankful and excited for everyone to be able to reopen and for them to get back to a small sense of normalcy and be inside bars and restaurants again,” Vos said. “It’s not 100 percent, But I wanted to celebrate with the community.”

“They’re risking the public’s health,” Auman said. “They also need to be concerned about possible issues with liability insurance.

They may not cover them if they violate the guidelines.”

Auman said the threat of revoking a license is a last step in talks with businesses that receive complaints.

The OCHD tries to follow up on complaints and quickly as possible.

The OCHD sends its food representative to talk with the businesses about safe alternatives to indoor dining. None of the complaints so far have ended in law enforcement being sent to businesses.

County residents going out for outdoor drinking and dining since phase three began has been monitored closely by the OCHD. “I can’t speak specifically to those things but it’s definitely a concern,” Auman said. “You’re eating and drinking and it’s impossible to wear a mask.”

Overall, Auman believes the county has done “fairly well” with the COVID-19 pandemic. It stands at four deaths currently. Ogle is on the

“lower end” of cases in the region and has a high testing rate, Auman said. Four new cases a day come in on average.

Auman said there is no way to estimate the number of cases that aren’t documented or tested for, but that the Center for Disease Control has advised that there are four for

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Health Department reported one new COVID-19 case on Tuesday, totaling 245. Recoveries of documented cases stand at 221, with six new ones being reported Tuesday.

The OCHD reported its fourth

death in the county June 1. It reported its third on May 27. Ages and locations of the individuals are not being released to protect their privacy.

The Ogle County Health Department fields “several complaints” a day about businesses violating the current state phase three guidelines to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Public Administrator Kyle Auman said last week.

One of those complaints was Forreston’s Farmers Family Restaurant, which took to Facebook on June 17 to say it will no longer be serving inside after speaking with the OCHD. Indoor dining wasn’t currently allowed by the state, but that’s slated to change this week.

The restaurant will continue to do outdoor dining and carry our orders during normal hours and plans to do dine-in again when the state allows it in phase four on June 26.

A restaurant response to a comment on the Facebook post said it could have been shut down completely if it didn’t comply.

Four Shannon residents made the trip from their hometown to Forreston on June 20 to eat at the restaurant, located on Illinois 72.

Paul and Pat Rivers and Don and Shirley Schrader said they were willing to move back outside because the restaurant is a “good place to eat”.

“The waitresses, the service, the food is all great and their prices are good to,” said Shirley.

Auman declined to speak about specific businesses and their interactions with the OCHD, but said it’s currently trying to address many indoor dining complaints, the consequences of which could impact food

“There’s definitely still risk,” Auman said. “It’s still out there and it’s something we’re working on.

We’re getting more people for contact tracing.”

Auman said it’s still too early to tell what the results of the phase three opening will be. He believes that people are still being cautious, which will help the county progress.

“It’s called public health for a reason,” Auman said. “The public is responsible for itself. It’s too early to tell on impacts of reopening or a resurgence. There’s a good chance of that and we’re preparing for it.”

Auman believes the state’s reopening plan was “well thought out.” His only complaint is receiving guidance and feedback faster on guidelines. Illinois has done well as a state compared to others, he said.

Getting a sense of normalcy back and the economy back in working condition are factors that Auman understands. People having to stay in their homes has negative secondary impacts, he said. But the OCHD has its concerns about reopening and will be staying vigilant.

“Time will tell,” Auman said.

Residents turn out to show support for police Around 50 people walk around Ogle County Courthouse

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com Around 50 people took to the sidewalks around the Ogle County Courthouse on June 20 to let local law enforcement officers know they have their support.

“We just wanted to show support for our police, fire, and EMTs,” said Diane Schrimpsher of Oregon, who suggested the event with her husband, Gary, on social media.

Those attending the “Police Appreciation Walk” walked around the historic courthouse square carrying signs that read “Ogle County Supports Our Police” and “We Support and Pray for Our Police.”

“I just mentioned it in on a Facebook group,” Gary said of the event.

“I’m not an organizer. This isn’t by me – it’s by the community. You just see on TV everybody kicking the cops down and that’s not what average Americans want. We’re not disagreeing with anybody, except cop haters, the ones you see on TV throwing rocks and things.”

He said while there might be some “bad” police officers, the vast majority are not.

“There might be some that are bad, but they [protesters] make you think they are all bad, and it’s not that way,” Gary said. “We just started planning this a couple of days ago. It just goes to show that most of the community feels like we do.”

Joy and Don Groenhagen, also of Oregon, took part in the walk to support local police.

“We think they need all our support now,” Joy said. “You can’t abolish cops. You have to have law and order, otherwise there’d be chaos.”

The Schrimpshers purchased 30 gift certificates from the Oregon Sunrise restaurant to give to local officers. They presented 9 of those certificates to Oregon Police Chief Shawn Melville, who stopped by at the start of the walk.

“We love our community and we support our community,” Gary said.

“I was so surprised by how many people drove by honking and waving.”

What was a mud hole doing out in the street at the end of our driveway? Kenneth quickly said, “Betty can tell you why that may be there.”

I was called to fill in some information.

When we moved into the house and had a sump pump running continually in the basement I said very casually, “That is because we have Buffalo Brook running along Colden Street on its way to Buffalo Creek out by Little Red Bridge.”

No one really payed any attention to what I said.

We were used to having a sump pump run continually because we had this in Eagle Point. We lived in a low area out there.

Well, Monday as I explained to the guys why the mud hole might be there, they had never heard of Buffalo Brook running along Colden.

In 1927 the new plant for Polo Cooperative Creamery had been built where the police department now stands.

They came out with a new butter and named it “Buffalo Brook Butter” after a small stream that flowed through the town.

In 2015 when I was writing about all the creameries we had in Polo, I mentioned the new butter named after the little brook.

Bob Karrow asked me if I knew about the little brook that ran through Polo and I did not know about where this little brook ran.

Bob said it started north of the VFW by the railroad tracks and ran underground under Polo. It created problems every now and then so they decided to straighten it.

They brought it down to Colden Street near the fire station and then brought it along Colden Street to Buffalo Creek west of Polo and tied it into the creek there.

Bob took me down in the basement of I think the fire station and then we went down another level and there was the little brook running merrily along underground.

It was very cold as spring water is.

The men working at our house this week had never heard of such a little brook, but our daughter, Krista, remembers me telling about the experience.

Does anybody else remember little Buffalo Brook running under Polo?

Here we are to Father’s Day and it was to have been Town and Country Day’s Celebration in Polo.

Instead we are quietly celebrating at our homes with small groups of family.

I loved the picture on TV of many African American fathers with their children. We do not portray, in our nation, enough coverage of young African American father’s and their children. More emphasis needs to be made of how important fathers are to families.

Kenneth and I have been blessed with the help our children give to us.

When we moved it was our children who took over getting our needs accomplished. Susan handled the building of the handicapped ramp in the garage that has been a life saver for us. We do not even have to go outside.

Then Bruce took over the responsibility of putting in a whole new bathroom with a walk in shower and a heater in the ceiling. A warm bathroom is wonderful when you

are ninety.

Then this week, Susan and Bruce supervised the third big project of a new driveway and sidewalks. The work that had been previously done in the fifties was now very dangerous for anyone walking on it.

Kenneth had added that to our list of what needed to be done immediately.

Monday morning Jim Ports started breaking up all the old cement. I got Kenneth seated at a window to watch all the activity.

The cat was on another chair by the front door since she was not about to miss what was going on.

She is a very observant cat and wants to see when anything is brought into the house or what is going on outside.

She does not want to go out but just keeps check on all outdoor activity.

Finally as the day continued, Kenneth eventually ended up in the garage observing all the hard work of breaking up cement.

When they reached the road, Jim found a mud hole which was very unusual since we have had a streak of dry weather.

Oregon came out to celebrate 150 years in 1986 Editor’s note: Otto Dick, Oregon has researched the people, places and events important in the Oregon area’s history for the Ogle County Historical Society. The following is one of a series of the articles he has written.

land of the Farrell Holland Funeral Home and was filled with mementos from many Oregon families. The school children packed boxes and the “Capsule” will be opened in 50 years.

“This probably was one of the most exciting and emotional things to take place during our week’s activities. Many of us will not be around in the year 2036, but we hope what we sealed in our envelopes will inspire those who open them, to carry on our hopes, wishes, dreams and goals for a safe, prosperous Oregon, and perhaps they’ll think back to Oct. 12, 1986 with the 40 degree temperature and the dreary day when about 50 of us gathered together with tears in our eyes and lumps in our throats as we passed on parts of our lives and family history to those who will carry on tradition and heritage. Love joins our present with the past and the future.”

Harry Nurmet designed the cancellation stamp scheduled for Oct. 4, during the Autumn on Parade festivities.

He said “this stamp will help create more interest for the Sesquicentennial Celebration.”

The Oregon Postmaster said we are hoping to have extended hours at the post office to handle the traffic. This special stamp is a one day stamp. It is like a proof of purchase seal and the stamp cancels the postage stamp in the upper right hand corner of a letter or post card.

BY OTTO DICK In 1986 the Oregon Coliseum sign read “Happy Birthday Oregon, 150 years, 1836-1986.”

Many activities were planned beginning with a historical dinner on Sept. 20, 1986 put on by the Oregon United Methodist Church Women with close to 800 attending at three seatings.

The next event was a Sesquicentennial Ball held at St. Mary’s Community Center. The ladies dressed in old-fashioned clothes with Bob Kevern and his band entertaining.

Bette Landers wore a beige chiffon (Roaring 20’s) dress that belonged to her husband Tim’s mother. It was at least 50 years old and still very beautiful.

On Sunday Sept. 18, a breakfast was held at the VFW Post 8739. In the afternoon events were held on the Ogle County Courthouse Square.

The afternoon events included a Lions Club Barbecue, an ice cream social sponsored by the Oregon Bible College, a square dance and a beard judging contest.

In the evening a Heritage of Faith Worship Service was held at the Coliseum. The Kings Men Four Gospel Quartet from Rockford entertained over 100 people. Many wore old-fashioned outfits.

Girl’s TikTok video with officer gets 3M+ views Oregon police officer dances with local girl during BLM march

It got more than 3 million.

Hill, 11, of Oregon, had a plan in mind when attended the Black Lives Matter march with her family on June 12 near the Ogle County Courthouse. She wanted to do a TikTok video with a police officer.

“I took a chance and asked [Chief Shawn Melville],” Hill’s mother, Jordyn Garcia, said. “He had no idea what it was. He got officer Matt Kalnins, who came up to her and asked if she’d dance with him. They picked an easier one.

He learned the moves and was fun about it.”

As of June 23, the video had 3.2 million views on the social media platform. Garcia was “shocked” at the response. Hill has been “over the moon” about it. Hill is one of Garcia’s five kids. They’ve lived in Oregon for 2.5 years.

The family chose to attend the march because they wanted to be a part of the movement and the moment in the country’s history.

Garcia wanted her children to see that there are people who care about them. The BLM movement has been a part of their lives for 11 years.

“My daughters are part African-American and they’ve been called n-words and slaves at school,” Garcia said. “I worry about them. It’s a big problem in the community and in the world. I had chills the whole time. It’s very scary. The march was wonderful.

They got to see the positivity and negativity.”

The march drew over 300 people.

There were a handful of dissenters.

George Floyd, who was killed in police custody on Memorial Day in Minneapolis. Marches like Oregon’s have swept the nation since Floyd’s death.

Hill said she was “happy and excited” that Kalnins wanted to do the video with her.

“He was a nice officer and wasn’t saying stand back like the other ones were,” Hill said. “I feel really good about that.”

Most of Hill’s friends have seen the video and have told her how awesome they thought it was. A neighbor asked her about how she got famous all of the sudden.

Garcia was happy she took her children to experience the march and hopes that Hill and her siblings take something away from the experience.

“That there’s good in everybody,” Garcia said. “She’s a young black woman and a white officer did that with her. She’s seeing how the world has responded. She got to be a part of something and she’ll have that forever.”

Nash Recreation Center will reopen on July 8 OPD playgrounds, dog park, splash pad, shelters open June 26

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Oregon Park District will reopen its Nash Recreation Center on July 8 following a months-long closure to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

OPD’s playgrounds, dog park, splash pad and shelter will reopen on June 26 in accordance with the state’s fourth phase of its reopening plan starting. Gatherings of 50 people or less will be allowed in phase four. In-person outdoor activities began earlier this month with social distancing and limited participants.

“The Park District is taking a proactive stance to keep our community, participants and staff safe during the COVID-19 pandemic,” OPD Executive Director Erin Folk said in a press release. “We are currently operating and will continue to operate within the applicable

OPD will be using reduced program sizes, frequent handwashing, staggered program times, increased equipment cleaning and program modifications going forward to pre-

vent the spread of COVID-19. Signs will be posted to remind all users of social distancing recommendations.

Nash will re-open with capacity limits and social distancing requirements as identified by IDPH. A new reservation system will be introduced to allow users to schedule a use time for the pool, fitness center

and gym. This technology will assist with operations and limit group sizes.

To help users better understand the new procedures, OPD has created a ‘We Play Safe’ document to outline expectations at www.oregonpark.org.

Loomis said that at its peak on a hot day, about 210-220 people visit the pool during a single session. The new limits mean the pool can only operate at about 20 percent of its max capacity.

Usually the pool opens around Memorial Day. The board hopes to be leave it open through Labor Day weekend this year.

“Last year [the pool] generated over $30,000. This year, if we get 20 percent of that we’ll consider it a suc-

cess.”

The board talked about possibly doing different sessions to eliminate issues like lines, but decided on a first-come, first-serve approach.

Swim lessons and water aerobics will still be offered. Some parties are already scheduled.

“We hope local people can get in, but we know a lot of it will be people from out of town,” Loomis said.

The pool is all filled and ready to go. That was going to happen regardless due to the upkeep costs that would have come with the pool

sitting empty and not running for two years and deteriorating.

“It was grim,” Loomis said of the outlook on opening the pool in recent months. “I talked with area park districts that also have pools.

If we couldn’t open, our pool maintenance guy said we’d still have to fill the pool and run it to save from maintenance costs. That’s when we decided to fill it.”

Loomis also said Polo’s parks will be open on June 26 as well, in accordance with state guidelines.

Electronic recycling returns to Oregon on Friday, June 26 The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department will accept electronics for recycling on Friday, June 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the County Annex Building, 909 Pines Road in Oregon.

People dropping off items must stay in their vehicles with the windows closed. They must show proof of Ogle County residency, such as a drivers’ license, voter registration card, or recent utility bill, through the window.

Electronic items must be easy for

staff to remove and clear of original packaging. The limit is seven bulky item limit per vehicle; a box or tub loaded with smaller items is considered one bulky item.

Disposing of microwave ovens will cost $5 each, and payments for the exact amount, cash or check, must be taped to the outside of the vehicle window before going through the line. Make checks payable to Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department.

Do not bring items from people

who have tested positive for COVID19.

Acceptable are TVs, electronic hardware, video gaming systems, VCR-DVD players, cable and satellite boxes, radios, stereo equipment (no wooden speakers), digital clocks, holiday light strands, extension cords, phone systems, calculators, shredders, rechargeable batteries, CFL bulbs, and printer ink cartridges.

Patrons of the Polo Pool can get back in the swim of things this Saturday, well at least 45 of them.

The popular outdoor swimming pool will open with a limit of 45 patrons and 5 staff members in accordance with the state’s reopening Phase 4 plan that kicks off June 26.

The Polo Park Board made the decision to open the pool at its June 17 meeting.

Board Chairman Larry Loomis said park representatives have talked repeatedly with the Ogle County Health Department and the state about guidelines related to opening.

He and the board are happy to get the attraction back in town.

“It means a lot,” Loomis said. “The psychological impacts, we need that.

There’s no softball or baseball or any of the other events in town. We need that pool open and some sort of normalcy.”

There will be no summer passes offered because of the abbreviated season. There will be not be a concession building although some beverages and snacks might be offered at the check in counter pending state regulations.

The concession stand was closed by the OCHD last year and a new one still is still in the fundraising process. About $18,750 has been raised for the new concession stand with $30,000-$35,000 needed to com-

Graduates reflect on year at “drive-in” ceremony Commencement was held at dusk with a movie screen backdrop

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com An evening commencement, complete with videotaped messages, live streaming, and a “drive-in feel”, capped the end of the COVID-19 school year at Oregon High School on June 19.

Ninety three seniors and their families waited in or near their parked cars in the Blackhawk Center lot as they prepared to walk across an outdoor stage and pick up their diplomas.

“I know this isn’t the way you wanted it to go, but I don’t know, I think its kind of cool,” said Heidi Deininger, OHS prinElizabeth cipal, who opened the 8:30 p.m. ceremony.

“You finally got to this day. I know its be a long road, especially the past 65 days. We’ve all…,” Deininger said pausing, “we’ve all faced uncertainty, disappointment, worry and even fear. But you made it to this day to celebrate your achievements and your school career.

“Sorry it’s been hard on us too,” she continued, her voice breaking. “Each and everyone of you has accomplished something big or small while at OHS. Above all, I watched all of you persevere the last three months during some uncertain times.”

Karlie Hughes was one of three seniors who reflected on the school year during the hour-long event. She urged her classmates to face their challenges “head on”.

“The world you once knew has undergone some drastic changes,” she said via video. “Heck we are just now having our graduation ceremony—social distancing style.

I’ve found focusing on the negatives in life will only hold you back. So, please focus on the good and keep pushing forward because you can do this. To the Class of 2020 remember serving and helping others gives us perspective and keeps us from getting caught up in ourselves.”

taking away important senior milestones “like prom, the spring sports season and the last three months of school”.

Elizabeth Villarreal said the Class of 2020’s senior year was not one anyone expected.

“Instead of a year filled with joy and fun we got one filled with isolation and a cycle of injustice and violence,” she said. “Regardless of that we still managed to make it here today. Today is our day. We can finally make our mark and maybe an impact on our world.”

She said that while many may be unsure of what to do after high school, there were still many choices.

“The pandemic doesn’t make them any easier, but whatever choice you make I want you all to know that you shouldn’t be stressed because you are ready. Our class is resilient. You just have to be confident about your

life and yourself and own it. And if you are still unsure, then the fact that you survived about 3 months of glitchy Zoom classes is more than enough proof.

“This is no longer story of Class of 2020, but our own individual stories.

From here on out its our time to shine and make our own decisions,” she continued. “This also means stepping up for what we each believe

in and making our voices heard.

There’s a lot of negativity in our world, with the pandemic, the riots, and the horrific death of George Floyd, but now we’re at the point where we can make a difference. It there’s one thing the pandemic has taught us its not to live with regrets because as we now understand, our lives can change in a matter of seconds.”

Employees at Exelon Generation’s Byron Generating Station recently set a goal to raise $25,000 for local food pantries to help families affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The nuclear plant’s workers eclipsed that goal, raising $35,191 for 19 area food banks. Approximately half of the amount raised went to Northern Illinois Food Bank.

“Our essential workforce continues to safely generate carbon-free electricity for the region.

But after seeing local job losses and a weakening economy, our employees wanted to do something positive for the region and beyond,” said Mark Kanavos, site vice president at Byron Generating Station. “We all know someone affected in some way by the coronavirus pandemic. Helping to fill food pantry shelves is just one way we can assist in this time of need.”

Byron Station’s employee resource groups (ERGs) also contributed funds from their respective committees, each of which has a specific focus area like military charity support, nuclear power education and employee goodwill.

“In these challenging days the donations received by Bread of Life Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen in Stillman Valley are making it possible to feed our neighbors in need,” said Bread of Life board member Alicia Lindholtz. “Exelon Generation has shown itself once again to be generous and community minded. We are very grateful for their support.”

Fans back on the field, this time for graduation

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com When the Polo Marcos football clinched a state final appearance in 8-man football last fall, no one foresaw parents and family members of Polo High School’s Class of 2020 back on the gridiron again, this time watching graduation from the 50-yard line while sitting in lawn chairs in the back of pick up trucks.

But that’s exactly what happened Sunday and this time all the fans of the Class of 2020 came in sedans, vans, pick up trucks, and even a couple of convertibles to watch the school’s commencement exercise.

In a shortened ceremony due to the pandemic, 34 graduates waited in the bleachers to cross a

portable stage at mid-field.

Audrey Hess and Nicole Zeigler offered Senior Class Remarks and thanked everyone for attending the “unique ceremony to celebrate the Class of 2020”.

The pair thanked all the Polo teachers for their hard work. “We know that putting up with us for 4 years has not exactly been easy,” Hess said.

They said teachers surpassed normal duties to educate students during the pandemic.

“Not only did they make themselves available to us whenever we needed them, they spent hours filming their own lectures that made us feel like we were getting a classroom experience despite being confined to our homes,” Ziegler said. “Mr. Reece also made sure to include his joke of the day.”

“They also took a day out of their busy schedule to deliver yard signs and chat with each and every senior. None of their efforts have gone unappreciated,” she said.

Both thanked parents, family members, and the Polo community for supporting numerous extracurricular activities. “We know we can always rely on their unconditional support as we continue to learn and grow.”

They said growing up in such a “tightly knit community has allowed us to form many close friendships within our grade”.

“The Class of 2020 is one that sincerely understands what it means to be there for one another.

Congratulations Class of 2020. It has been an honor to grow and graduate with you,” they said.

PUBLIC VOICE To the Editor:

In 1776, Abigail Adams wrote to her husband John, asking him and other members of the Continental Congress to “remember the ladies” as they legislated. They didn’t. A mere 100 years ago, our nation remembered the ladies, giving women the right to vote.

During this time of seismic shift in race relations, there is a major push to rename military bases because many are named after Confederates. Why not name some of them after females who have figured in our military history?

Col. Ruby Bradley was an Army nurse. When she was captured in the Philippines, she gave most of her rations to starving children and was liberated weighing 86 pounds. She went on to serve in Korea, retiring in 1958. She was one of the most decorated women in U.S. military history.

Dr. Mary Walker, who served during the Civil War, is the only female Medal of Honor recipient.

Spc. Lori Piestewa was the first Native American woman in history to die in combat and the first U.S. military woman killed in the Iraq War. Brig. Gen. Anna Mae Hays, Army nurse, was promoted to brigadier general in 1970. She became the first woman in the history of the Army to attain the general rank.

Rear Adm. Alene B. Duerk was the first female admi-

ral in the Navy.

Pvt. Cathay Williams was the first black woman to enlist in the U.S. Army and the only known female Buffalo soldier.

Col. Mary Halleren was a member of the first training class of the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps. She commanded the largest all-female unit to serve overseas.

In 1948, as director of the Women’s Army Corps, she advocated for women to be integrated as regular members of the military beyond wartime.

Lt. Col. Marcella Hayes was the first black female pilot in the U.S. military.

I have not added our heroic Sen. Tammy Duckworth to this list. She has miles to go before her service to country is over, but keep her in mind.

Disappointed in dog owner’s nonpayment To the Editor:

Today we learned a lesson about honesty, accountability, trust, and lack of compassion for a sick animal.

On April 22, 2016, our mini Schnauzer was viciously attacked on our front porch by a pit bull mix. If my husband wouldn’t have heard me screaming we would have had to bury our beloved dog. Our dog was bleeding from some tooth punctures on his head. We had to get him to the closest vet immediately. Staples were

needed to close the wounds. Animal control was called and he and the vet clinic unanimously agreed the owner of the attacking dog should be held responsible for the vet bill.

When we had to go to the vet clinic in July 2017 to pick up a prize, we found that she had not paid any of the bill. After confronting her about the bill, the dog owner said that she would take care of it. She paid $40.50 that month and another $20 in November 2017.

We went into the vet clinic that month and asked if she was paying the bill and the receptionist was very snippy with us and told us that yes, she is taking care of it. So we assumed she was paying it off in payments. Then she quit paying the bill with $80 remaining on it, which we just found out this past week.

Today our mini Schnauzer was sick. So I called the clinic and made an appointment. We were very happy when they said they had an opening, because our regular clinic in Dixon was booked. About 10 minutes later, they called and said we had an outstanding bill of $80 and they wouldn’t see him unless the bill was paid.

If she started paying Cody’s bill, why didn’t they bill her? She had accepted the responsibility of owing the bill. We feel Cody was held hostage for $80 that was not our responsibility. This was so wrong on every level.

First installment of property tax bills due July 1 Ogle County Collector Linda Beck is reminding property owners that the first installment of their property tax bill is due July 1.

Payment methods include cash or check (payable to Ogle County Collector). In-person payments can be made at the Treasurer’s office located in the “old” Ogle County Courthouse at 105 S. 5th Street, Suite 114, in Oregon or at any bank in Ogle County.

Office hours at the courthouse are 8:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday excluding holidays.

A secure drop box is located at the 5th Street address for taxpayers to drop off check payments after hours or on the weekends.

The mailing address is Ogle County Collector, P.O. Box 40, Oregon, IL 61061. Mailed payments must be postmarked by the due date to be considered timely.

Late payments will incur a fee of 1.5% per month or part of a month after the due date and must be remitted by mail or at the Collector’s office.

Beck’s office is also offering the option of online credit card payments.

“You may get to this site by going directly to www.oglecountytreasurer.org or through www. oglecounty.org and then selecting the Treasurer’s department. Choose the Online Tax Payments link and click the Pay Now button,” Beck said.

“Fill in the information as prompted. Be sure to receive a payment confirmation for your records.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity June 16 Jonathan Mercado-Feliciano was arrested at 11:13 p.m. for driving while license revoked after deputies initiated a traffic stop in the 2,000 block of West Illinois 64. Mercado-Feliciano was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

June 17 Carlos Loyola, 22, of Rochelle was arrested at 2:44 p.m. for unlawful possession of cannabis after deputies conducted a traffic stop at Illinois 38 and Chana Road. Deputies also arrested the passenger, Anthony Urrutia, 30, of Rochelle, for a valid Ogle County arrest warrant for failure to appear. Both were transported to the Ogle County Jail where they were held in lieu of bond.

At 10:23 p.m., deputies responded to the 900 block of East Hay Road for a report of a one vehicle crash. It was determined that a Ford Fusion driven by Steven Early was traveling east on Hay Road when he swerved to miss a deer, Ogle County property transfers recorded week of June 12-18.

Early’s vehicle caught fire and was deemed a total loss. No injuries were sustained in the crash. Deputies were assisted on scene by Oregon Fire. The crash remains under investigation.

At 6:31 p.m., deputies responded to the 17,000 block of West U.S. 52 for a report of a one vehicle rollover crash.

After an investigation it was determined that a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven

by Nathaniel Artz, 18, of Mt. Morris was traveling east on U.S. 52 when he lost control and overturned in the field on the north side of the road.

Artz was transported to Freeport’s hospital by Polo Fire and Ambulance.

William Reynolds “Bill” Hungerford, 72 of Flat Rock, North Carolina, died on Thursday, June 18, 2020 at his home. Born in Chicago, he was a son of the late Reynolds and Mary Zoe Hungerford.

He called Illinois home for many years. Bill was a Communications Technician and was a member of the National Guard.

Students fare well in contest An Ogle County student have been chosen as the winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the 16th District.

Marlen Hueramo of Rochelle Township High School won the competition with, “El Loro,” created with colored pencils and ink.

The winning piece will be displayed in the halls of the U.S. Capital for one year.

Polo High School’s Reylee Katner received Honorable Mention.

Katner’s graphite submission, “Satisfaction,” will hang in the Rockford office of Congressman Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, for one year.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, students were able to submit their art entries digitally as well as in person at the office.

The deadline for this year’s competition also was extended to accommodate the extended stayat-home orders across the state.

Despite these hurdles, more than 20 entries were turned in.

IDNR reminds people to leave black bear alone Bruin spotted first in Iowa then in Henderson County in south-central Illinois The message from Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) biologists and Conservation Police Officers (CPOs) is clear: Leave the black bear currently passing through western Illinois alone.

IDNR biologists and CPOs have been closely monitoring the bear since it crossed into Illinois from Wisconsin June 10. The bear then crossed into Iowa and came back into Illinois in southern Rock Island County June 18.

Since then, the bear has traveled through northwestern Illinois mostly not bothered until it passed through northwest Henderson County Father’s Day weekend, where more than 300 people gathered to view, follow and harass the bear.

It was last seen June 21 headed south toward Stronghurst in southern Henderson County, southwest of Monmouth.

“For the most part, we’ve not seen conflicts between the public and bear until recently and, unfortunately, those conflicts were caused entirely by people,” said Stefanie Fitzsimons, district wildlife biologist, IDNR. “It’s a novelty to see a bear in Illinois, and people want to see it for themselves, but they must remember that the outcome for this bear – whether IDNR must step in and take action to protect public safety – is completely dependent

Fitzsimons said the bear is likely just passing through the state looking for a mate and won’t stay long because Illinois doesn’t provide appropriate habitat for an animal that big.

The most important thing to remember if people

spot the bear is that it’s a wild animal and should be treated as such. In fact, Fitzsimons added, people should stay at least 100 yards away from the bear and enjoy watching it from a distance.

“Certainly, the more pressure is put on the bear, the more likely we’ll see an adverse outcome,” said Captain Laura Petreikis, Illinois Conservation Police. “As is always the case, we want to ensure the safety of both people and animals. If we continue to see situations like we saw this past weekend, Conservation Police will issue tickets and make arrests to ensure the safety of both the public and the bear.”

A small black bear was spotted numerous times in Ogle County in June 2014 before moving on to Carroll County.

The 200-pound male bear spent several hours in and near Mt. Morris on June 18, 2014 in an oak tree a mile or so near M. Morris before lumbering off through a cornfield to the west in the early evening.

The bear sightings started early in the morning and was seen on a surveillance camera at Trinity Lutheran Church running through yards on the other side of Brayton Road.

Illinois once had thousands of black bears, but by the mid-1800s, settlers had killed them all for their meat and hides.

They are now protected by the Illinois Wildlife Code and may not be hunted, killed or harassed unless there is an imminent threat to person or property.

Responsibilities include providing support for the County Farm Bureau office, assisting members over the phone and in person, assisting staff with correspondence, research and file maintenance and bookkeeping and payroll tax preparation responsibilities.

Qualified candidates will possess good verbal and written communication skills, strong PC skills with all Microsoft Office applications, good multitasking and organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Experience in a related role required and knowledge of agriculture preferred.
