WEEK IN REVIEW DeKalb OKs citizen’s review board for cops

kfinlon@shawmedia.com DeKALB – After about an hour of discussion on Aug. 9, the DeKalb City Council gave city staff the unanimous go-ahead to create a citizen’s review board for the city’s police force.

More than a year after a countrywide social justice movement was spurred by the police murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, DeKalb City Manager Bill Nicklas said the proposal to create a citizen’s review board came up after DeKalb community members provided a list of demands following Floyd’s death to help with police accountability.

“We have had some very frank and constructive conversations and we have looked at internal procedures, how people are treated and how we can be more accountable and more transparent,” Nicklas said, speaking to the council.

“I identified some ways in particular that I think this council has stepped up and been at the head of the curve on a lot of internal changes and adjustments,” Nicklas continued. “But one thing that we haven’t talked about in this room but we’ve had a lot of conversation within the community about ... is whether we want to embrace a civilian police review board.”

According to city documents, the board would be comprised of five civilian members who would be appointed by the DeKalb mayor and approved by the city council. The board would hold public meetings “no less than six times per year” and be subject to the Illinois Open Meetings Act. All board members would have to be DeKalb residents and serve staggered, twoyear terms. The thought was for the mayor and council to strive for diversity in selecting board members and “the board should

look like DeKalb,” Nicklas said.

The board’s main responsibilities will include reviewing closed police investigations in all “use of force” cases and make recommendations about “the thoroughness and objectivity of the investigation, and any changes it deems necessary in police policy, training, or procedures as a result of the investigation,” according to city documents.

Nicklas said more robust citizen review boards are in larger metropolitan cities where “use of force” incidents are more frequent and the firing of service weapons is the main focus. He previously said there have been only a few recorded incidents in the city when a police officer fired a gun in the line of duty.

DeKalb Police Chief David Byrd reiterated on Aug. 9 that the department supports the creation of the board. He said he also addressed with city officials his concern about potential false accusations and slander against police.

“Because we’re scrutinizing the officers for everything they do in 1-1000th of a second,” Byrd said. “So you mean to tell me we’re not going to scrutinize a complainant who took as much time as they needed to come up with a false narrative?

So, to me, something has to be in place to protect our officers when they’re doing their job correctly and someone falsely accuses them of something else.”

DeKalb Mayor Cohen Barnes and aldermen gave consensus for the creation of the board.

Nicklas said the hope is to bring back an ordinance for the council to approve in an upcoming meeting, either toward the end of this month or during the council’s first meeting in September.

Barnes said the city can also “adapt, change and modify” the board over time “as it suits the DeKalb community.”

“So I am in full support of this,” Barnes said. “I’m really glad that we got this before us, and I look forward to getting the citizen’s review board together and getting this in place.”

Second Ward Alderwoman Barb Larson said it’s important to find the right mix of people to serve on the board. She said it might be difficult but “not impossible” to find those board members who “reflect all of DeKalb” and the whole community has to trust their judgement.

“Whether we’re residents, people that are more victims, or maybe on the wrong side of the police, or feel that we haven’t been treated fairly by the police,” Larson said. “Those five people have to have the trust of all those different groups.”

The update comes after former DeKalb Police Sgt. Jeff Weese – who was found in violation of the DeKalb Police Department’s use-of-force policy after video surfaced of an August 2019 arrest during which he placed a man in what a police forensic doctor later described as a chokehold – resigned in November 2020.

Local activist Frankie DiCiaccio, a DeKalb resident who provided public comment during the meeting, appreciated the additional transparency a citizens’ review board for police would provide.

DiCiaccio, who prefers to use gender-neutral pronouns, said one of their main concerns is how much power the board would have in reviewing incidents involving police and that “nationally, we have experienced momentum leading us to this moment, and my biggest fear is that we are squandering it on something that does not fundamentally shift overnight.”

“And it is really frightening that we might give the illusion of progress and everyone will sit back and then something will happen,” DiCiaccio said. “And that’s my fear.”

Sycamore teen thriving with her own corn stand

SYCAMORE – When stopping by Shelby’s Sweet Corn Stand, 1787 Brickville Road in Sycamore, customers are likely to meet 19-year-old entrepreneur Shelby Edwards, who greets everyone with a friendly smile.

Edwards was diagnosed at age 1 with a chromosomal disorder and brain abnormality. Her mother, Rebecca Edwards, said “she has always been positive, [even through] learning disabilities and her body slowing and in pain, she doesn’t let it stop her.” “‘No’ means nothing to her,” Rebecca Edwards said. “It means ‘try harder with a big smile.’”

Shelby Edwards plants, cares for, harvests and sells the sweet corn herself. Edwards’ twin brother Bradford started the stand in 2016 and passed it down to her. After work, Bradford helps his sister pick corn every day.

Their grandparents, Ron and Sindy Edwards, donate the 2 acres of land where the corn is grown.

Shelby’s Sweet Corn Stand is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In the spring, Edwards staggered the planting of the corn to allow for ripe corn to be picked fresh daily. The stand will be open until Labor Day or until the field runs out of corn.

With the money she earns, Edwards purchases next year’s seed, fertilizer and peppermint, which she uses to deter deer, raccoons, squirrels and bugs.

Her long-term goal is to earn enough money to build a shed and to one day also sell tomatoes.

Rebecca Edwards said that working the sweet corn stand “has given Shelby an opportunity to shine.”

“Normally, she’s a shy person, but now she’s talking to everyone and getting to know them,” Rebecca Edwards said. “She’s showing others that she’s

someone that’s more than her disability. I’m so proud of her for her hard work. She was given the life expectancy of 3, and now she’s 19. She’s overcome the obstacles of her disability, and she never lets it stop her.”

Shelby Edwards said she likes having the corn stand because she likes to talk to people.

“It’s a lot of work, but I like it,” she said. “It’s fun for me to do all of the work.”

Rebecca Edwards said Shelby told her the reason she continues to sell sweet corn is “to show everyone that anyone can do whatever they set their mind to.”

“She’s learned so much already, and I’ve seen her really grow as a person,” Rebecca Edwards said. “People often only look at labels, and she is an amazing young woman. She’s applied for many jobs, but not had much luck. It means so much to me, to our family, that Shelby has found acceptance and support in the community. They are coming to realize what a great person she is, how hard working, kind and generous she is, and it’s all because of this sweet corn stand.”

DeKALB – Minerva Garcia-Sanchez is looking forward to the start of a new school year.

As she prepares for summer vacation to come to an end, she also is preparing to meet new students and teachers at DeKalb School District 428.

Garcia-Sanchez is not a new student; she is the school district’s new superintendent. She began the threeyear role on July 1.

Garcia-Sanchez graduated from Loyola University of Chicago in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science majoring in communication and media studies and psychology. She earned a Master of Education from Chicago State University in 2003 and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2021.

She worked for Chicago Public Schools for 27 years and most recently served as the chief of schools for the Pilsen and Little Village network.

In January, the DeKalb School Board voted unanimously, 7-0, to approve Garcia-Sanchez as the new superintendent.

She is believed to be the first woman, district officials said, to be superintendent of the district and is at least the second minority superinten-

start. On the first day of school, everyone has something new, whether it’s a new backpack, shirt, shoes or hair barrette. Milton: Are you looking forward to the first day of school?

Garcia-Sanchez: I’m ready for school, and I want to ring the bell for school to

Milton: Have you always wanted to be in education?

Garcia-Sanchez: No, I didn’t want to be a teacher growing up. I wanted to be a child advocacy lawyer. I wanted to change the world through policy, making a difference in children’s lives. In high school, I worked at Quaker Oats.

I learned about belonging, human relations and development.

Milton: How did you become a teacher?

Garcia-Sanchez: I was working in instructional technology, bringing local area networks into schools. That was how I was introduced to Eli Whitney Elementary School, where I had my first teaching job. It was there that I met a young boy named Daniel. He was so smart, reading at a 12th-grade reading level. But he was bored and ran in the wrong crowds. He taught

me how important it was to be a teacher and a leader. That’s why I became an assistant principal and later a principal.

Milton: What does being a good leader mean to you?

Garcia-Sanchez: Being a leader in education means that you have to be a team player, you have to collaborate and believe in supporting the child as a whole and their best interest at heart.

For me, it’s about helping a child become their authentic self. … When I was younger, the principals of my elementary school were not the kind to sit in offices. They knew our names and made it a point to get to know our families. I want people to know that I am here, they can ask me questions and I will be very responsive.

Milton: Are involved parents important when it comes to education?

Garcia-Sanchez: School is a formal education, but your first teachers are at home: your parents and family. At home, you learn your native language and values. Parents have high expectations of us, we’ve been entrusted

THERAPY IN ACTION

Adventure Works uses outdoor experiences to help counsel youth

D

eKALB – Lynette Spencer started Adventure Works in 2010 because she saw a need for a different type of counseling and therapy for children in the community.

On July 1, after 11 years serving as the organization’s executive director, Spencer handed over the reins to new director, Katie Watts. Spencer will continue her work with another organization she founded, Action Consulting and Therapy in Geneva and Hoffman Estates.

Adventure Works, 1211 Sycamore Road in DeKalb, is a nonprofit, interactive youth development and counseling agency that serves ages 26 and younger by providing individual, family and group counseling, as well as prevention and education services through adventure activities and adventure therapy.

“Some youth have a hard time reflecting about their day and their feelings in a traditional counseling setting,” Spencer said. “We offer ‘in vivo’ experiences, or in the moment. Our therapy is more partner-orientated and experiential than simply talking to an authority figure. By participating in activities, we can see behaviors and problem solving in action.”

The adventure therapy can take place at a myriad of different locations, including at local parks, nature preserves, Adventure Works’ new ropes course and on the property’s green space. Adventure Works is developing groups and expanding group offerings for the fall. Outdoor adventure-based team-building activities for businesses and organizations is also offered.

“You’d find similar adventure therapy programs offered in the mountains, but they’re very exclusive and expensive,” Spencer said. “Our goal is to offer adventure therapy to all youth. We do not turn anyone away based on their ability to pay.”

Group therapy was offered solely from 2010 to 2015, and when Adventure Works moved to its current location on Sycamore Road, it began to offer more individual and family therapy options.

“We’ve added more groups back in, and we’re hoping to go in the direction of offering more of a group focus,” Watts said. “There’s a magic that happens when children participate in a group. There’s a dynamic that occurs when they play together outside of a classroom or traditional therapy setting.

It’s an authentic experience you can’t duplicate.

There’s a fun aspect, but there’s also growth, communication and an accountable peer pressure and feedback that happens naturally.”

“As a therapist, it’s sometimes challenging to get youth to open up,” Spencer said. “When they’re participating in activities in a group setting, sometimes they forget they’re in therapy, they’re just completing tasks and challenges and having fun. The therapy is integrated around activities they enjoy, and that activity process is very important.”

Adventure Works therapists visit PFAE’s facilities twice a week to work with children, families and teachers.

“Adventure Works incorporates play-based therapy, and it’s designed for children to play, which is what children do best,” Lofthouse said. “It’s a great way for them to get the help they need without knowing they’re getting it. It’s not the stereotypical therapy setting. It’s totally different from sitting on a couch and dumping out all your problems to one person.”

Lofthouse said another teacher at the center used the analogy of how Adventure Works’ play therapy is “the opposite of tricking kids to take medicine.”

“Instead of tricking them or forcing them, the kids do what comes naturally: play,” she said.

“They’re doing something they’re comfortable and familiar with, and we’re giving them the medicine through something they like and enjoy. I wish more people knew of Adventure Works and how it really does work. We have a great partnership with them, and they’re an amazing asset to the community.”

Five of Patty Ihm’s nine children have participated in Adventure Works adventure therapy pro-

grams over the past eight years.

“It took a while to find the best fit, especially for the boys, because they are very active,” Ihm said.

“They’re always running and jumping and climbing. Adventure Works was the perfect fit. It just made sense. They were able to open up while doing activities. I know they always looked forward to what they were going to do, and it didn’t seem like therapy for them.”

Ihm credits Adventure Works’ therapists for “remarkable, positive changes” in her children.

“One son opened up and talked about school and issues he was having with peers, which he had never done before,” Ihm said. “It’s all thanks to the skill level of the therapists. They made all of my children feel comfortable and relaxed, like they could talk about anything.”

After her childrens’ success with Adventure Works, Ihm said they “will continue being a longtime client family.”

“It’s a great fit for us, and my children are happy,” Ihm said. “You can find something different there, out in nature step-by-step. It’s been an amazing adventure for us.”

THE MIDWEEK The Kishwaukee Valley Art League will offer a Beginning Watercolor Painting class on Aug. 19 from 6:30 to 9 pm. at the Gallery on State, 322 W. State St. in Sycamore.

This class will be taught by former KVAL President Larry Bond. Cost for the class is $75 and wine will be provided. Registration forms can be picked up at Gallery on State.

While Bond’s formal art education was somewhat limited, he has watched numerous videos by watercolor experts and watched hundreds of artist’s live demonstrations. He has taken workshops from noted artists David Becker, Andy Evansen, Mark Mehaffrey and John Salmen.

Bond has won several awards for his watercolor work and was accepted into the 2018 San Diego Watercolor Society’s International Watercolor Show.

He has won awards from shows at The Next Picture Show in Dixon, Norris Cultural Center in St. Charles and Illinois Watercolor Society Member Shows. He also is a Signature Member of the Illinois Watercolor Society.

Of his painting, Bond says, “I find watercolor challenging, with the blend-

Although the original schedule called for an overnight stop in DeKalb, Scotts’ Modern Caravan, consisting of one motor truck and 23 Ford cars with trailers, when they left Chicago yesterday were advised by a representative of the Chicago Motor Club to put up for the night at Geneva, as DeKalb had no facilities for tourists. DeKalb lost an opportunity to royally entertain over 100 New York people going from the eastern metropolis to Puhl, Idaho, to take up government tracts.

S.E. Bradt, state highway commissioner, back in town for a day or two states that the work on the highway near Elburn is progressing very rapidly. According to DeKalb’s good road man there is only about two miles or so of the cement to be laid and then the road will be opened to the public. When this stretch is opened, it will be possible to travel the entire distance to Chicago on cement.

Few people of the vicinity know that a history there was connected with the Malta elevator which was burned to the ground a week ago. Few people are aware of the fact that George Ollman, the present owner, was probably the second man to paint the building since its erection and the first to give it a coat of paint in the last 30 years.

The broken panes of glass in the Delbridge restaurant in Malta and the bank have been installed and the work was given the best of attention and service by the contractors. Delbridge had two of its large windows broken, while nearly every window in the bank was broken.

Although George Ollman has no elevator, he was buying corn yesterday and shipping it out as fast as it came in. He had an elevator placed at the cars and after the load had been weighed, the corn was taken to the cars and loaded.

Mr. Ollman was at Esmond yesterday afternoon looking over the elevator built there about a year ago, which is said to be one of the most modern elevators in the vicinity.

Sycamore Municipal Hospital’s Board of Directors has just purchased new and complete modern X-ray equipment consisting of a large stationary machine of ample capacity to serve the needs of an institution many times the size of Sycamore Hospital even with its new addition.

Some Ohio folks were made very happy this morning when their new 1946 Chevrolet club coupe was located ten minutes after they reported it as having been stolen. The auto belonging to Marvin S. Minneman of Youngston, Ohio, had been parked near the Rice Hotel about midnight. When Mr. and Mrs. Minneman went to get their car about 10:50 o’clock this morning it was gone.

For nearly three hours last evening several thousand persons were royally entertained at the DeKalb Municipal Band Festival, which was presented in the natural and ideal setting of the huge amphitheater at Hopkins Park. It was an enthusiastic audience and the band numbers, guest conductors, soloists and fireworks display were greeted with lusty receptions.

Announcements have been made for the annual Farmers and Old Settlers picnic at Kingston Park. This event, which has been held for years and looms as

one of the important late summer activities in northern Illinois, will be held Aug. 22 and 23 at the Kingston park, which is just north of the Kishwaukee River from the town.

The new memorial windows have now been completely installed in the Pierce Evangelical church, including the vestibule and Primary Room. Other improvements are to be made, and include the painting of the buildings, redecorating of the church basement.

The back porch at the parsonage has been remodeled, glassed in and screened making a much needed improvement.

Gladiolus are beginning to bloom and make many beautiful gardens throughout the county. In 1941, one DeKalb County young man started his hobby of raising gladiolus at his home near Kingston. He is Wayne Hunter, who now lives north of Kirkland. He began with 25 bulbs the first year. The next year he was married and his wife also became interested in his hobby. That year they had 150 bulbs. The following year they planted 3,000 bulbs, many of them coming from friends as gifts. In 1944, about 7,000 bulbs were planted with several new varieties being added.

1971 – 50 YEARS AGO The question of what to do with Clinton Rosette Middle School was one of the major items under discussion at last night’s DeKalb Board of Education meeting. Before any decision is made to build a new middle school or remodel Clinton Rosette, the board suggested that the

1996 – 25 YEARS AGO

The DeKalb County Health Care Planning Ad-hoc Committee essentially dissolved itself last night, sending questions on the future of the county home to the Nursing Home Committee. Some members had argued the committee was commissioned to study a broader range of health care issues than simply the nursing home’s future.

Helicopter Pilot Kevin Johnson, of Hendrickson Flying Services in Rochelle, swooped down over a corn field Tuesday afternoon near Pleasant Street and Somonauk Road in rural DeKalb. Johnson was spraying for second-generation corn borers and root worm beetles. Field scouts check the fields to determine the threshold for an economic application of the chemicals needed to kill the pests.

To keep up with the area’s growing population, Kishwaukee Community Hospital will begin to expand its emergency department next week. The construction will add 18,600 square feet on two floors over the next 12 to 15 months.

The emergency department and the admission center will be on the ground floor, and the basement will house classroom space, storage and possibly some offices.

NIU Lifelong Learning Institute readies for fall THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – The Northern Illinois University Lifelong Learning Institute invites community members of all ages to learn in an informal, non-competitive setting.

NIU STEAM receives $10,000 grant from Bayer Fund THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – NIU STEAM, a program in the Center for P-20 Engagement in Northern Illinois University’s Division of Outreach, Engagement and Regional Development, has received a grant of $10,000 from Bayer Fund, which will be used to support STEM Fest and STEM Cafés.

SYCAMORE – What Phillip Palczynski of Downers Grove loves best about steam traction engines is “the great smell of burning coal.”

Phillip and his 17-year-old son Kevin attend the Sycamore Steam Show and Threshing Bee annually, operating vintage steam traction engines and answering questions from event attendees about steam power.

This year’s event, hosted by the Northern Illinois Steam Power Club, opened Aug. 12 and ran through Aug. 15 at the Taylor Marshall Farm, 27707 Lukens Road in Sycamore.

Daily activities at the show included a sawmill and shingle mill in operation, Flink fan in operation testing horsepower, silo filling, corn shelling, wheat grinding, field plowing, a display of steam and gas engines, gas tractors, antique cars and other antique power equipment, the Prairie State Scale Railroad, a large flea market, live music and food vendors.

“Steam power had a short run in history, only from the mid-1800s to the 1930s or 1940s,” he said. “Before the mechanization effort, farmers had to harvest manually with scythe and reaper, harvester, binder and combines. It usually took 14 people to harvest wheat. It was neighbor helping neighbor, the community coming together to help one another. I think that’s what the event’s all about, too.

In tornadoes’ wake, residents sift through ruins

After emerging from the basement of her house the evening of Aug. 9, Brenda Evans described the devastation she saw in front of her as “the biggest 10-second mess you’ve ever seen.”

Tornado sirens had been sounding off and on throughout the afternoon at Evans’ house, located on the 2200 block of Fenstermaker Road in unincorporated Sycamore. Around 6 p.m., Brenda Evans was in the garage and her husband Ken was in his shop with their dog when the wind picked up and debris started flying.

“My husband yelled to me, ‘Basement, now,’ he picked up the dog and we ran into the basement as fast as we could,” she said. “We made it into the basement just in time. Ten seconds later, we looked out the basement window and [the storm] was all over. My husband exited the basement first and told me to come out slowly. Looking out at what we saw, it was just awful.

We grabbed each other and sobbed. It’s all we could do.”

Several tornado touchdowns were confirmed in DeKalb County, and one 11 miles northeast in Kane County, following the severe storms, said a meteorologist with the National Weather Service on Aug. 10. An EF-0 tornado was confirmed near Esmond in the far northwest of DeKalb County. There was an EF-U tornado south of Kirkland, an EF-0 tornado somewhere between Creston and Esmond which tracked into DeKalb County just north of Malta, an EF-1 just northeast in Burlington in nearby Kane County. The fifth tornado, an EF-1 touched down in Sycamore, where the National Weather Service said the heaviest damage was reported. There also were tornadoes in McHenry and Lee counties.

No injuries to people were reported in the storms, confirmed Andy Sullivan, chief deputy with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, though significant property damage was reported across the county.

Ken’s shop was missing its roof, two buildings were gone, debris and tree limbs were littered everywhere, a trailer was turned around and moved at least 50 feet and a metal windmill was destroyed. Their house and attached garage moved off of its foundation and some windows had been blown out, but were otherwise left untouched by the tornado.

Brenda said that some objects have disappeared and have not yet been found. The frame of their 1953 Studebaker remains, but the body parts are gone. A photo of Ken that was hanging on a wall was found 2 miles away in someone else’s yard.

“There’s not much we can do, 23 years of work are completely gone,” Brenda said. “I just ask everyone to please give us our privacy. Stay away and don’t try to loot. It’s already difficult enough.”

Megan Gerwig and her husband Scott Wetzel’s house on the 2200 block of Airport Road in unincorporated Sycamore overlooks the Evans’ property to the east.

Gerwig said when she noticed the wind pick up, she saw pieces of the Evans’ metal buildings lift into the air.

“We saw building pieces lift off the ground and swirl in the air, and a big piece of roof came off and hit our house,” Gerwig said. “It was like ‘The Wizard of Oz.’ I could feel the pressure change and all our ears popped. We ran into the basement with our three dogs, and we heard debris hitting our house.”

When Gerwig and her family exited their basement, she said the damage they saw “was nothing like we could have expected.” Gerwig’s family, dogs and farm animals survived the tornado, although one of their horses was injured in the head by debris.

“Our house was OK, but there were trees uprooted everywhere,” Gerwig said. “Some trees are no longer there, there’s just a hole in the ground. There was a grove of evergreen trees that are now at an angle. We had a seating area in the backyard, and the carpet is wrapped around fallen trees and the lights are gone. Everything is either missing or flattened.”

Across the street from Gerwig, Melody Linneman was sitting on her front porch and talking to her husband on her cell phone when a warning alert went off on her phone.

“As I was running into my house, the windows were blowing out around me,” she said. “I was in shock, and it was scary. Some people say they hear a noise like a freight train. I didn’t hear anything. I just saw stuff flying around and knew it was dangerous.”

Linneman, her husband and his mother were building a new house behind their current home. Construction of the new house would have been completed in October. The tornado demolished Linneman’s shed, milk house, a grove of trees and damaged

her house and her new house under construction.

“Now we have to rebuild our new home from scratch,” she said. “There’s a canoe hanging through the window of my new house.”

Linneman’s family, two dogs and farm animals were not hurt by the storm, and she said she now has to find a place to live while her new house is torn down and reconstructed.

“I think everything happens for a reason,” she said. “If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. There’s been so much support and help from everyone so far.

This is just the kind of thing you never thought would happen to you, and it happened to me, here in Sycamore.”

Will Wittwer was on his way home from work when a tornado demolished the old red barn on his Kirkland property.

He describes the remnants of what used to be his barn, located on the 5000 block of Baseline Road in Kirkland, as “flat like a pancake.”

“There’s hardly anything standing,” Wittwer said. “It looks like a house of cards that folded completely in. ... I didn’t see the tornado, but others did. It had enough power to pick the barn up 20 feet from its foundation and slam it back down to the ground.”

The tornado’s path can be seen through the nearby cornfield.

“We were working on restoring the barn, and it was one of the reasons we bought the property about two years ago,” Wittwer said. “Hopefully, with insurance money, we’ll be able to rebuild or place a new building, but you can’t replace old barns like that.

The barn is what makes the farm historic, and it’s now it’s history.”

Wittwer said the renters that live on his property were not home at the time of the storm and that nobody was hurt.

“I’m just glad that nobody was injured,” he said. “Everyone is OK, and that’s what is most important.”

Sycamore Kiwanis to host barbecue fundraiser The Kiwanis Club of Sycamore will host a pulled pork sandwich dinner from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Sycamore United Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Ave. in Sycamore.

The event is part of the monthly SUMC Wednesday Drive-Thru Dinner community outreach program.

The meal provided by Slow Smoke BBQ includes a pulled pork sandwich, Bud’s sweet barbecue sauce, cowboy beans, coleslaw and applesauce. On meal pick-up night, use the church’s south parking lot entrance and follow the signs to drive around the back of the church.

Section of Route 64 to close two weeks The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Aug. 12 that a section of Illinois Route 64 in DeKalb County will be closed starting Aug. 16 for culvert repairs.

The culvert is 2.3 miles west of Sycamore between North First Street/Five Points Road and Glidden Road.

There will be a marked detour directing traffic to Route 23, Route 38 and Interstate 39. IDOT workers will perform the repairs, which are expected to be completed by Monday, Aug. 30.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – Joseph Glidden didn’t just make barbed wire. He made horses, too.

Glidden was one of the first people to introduce the Percheron horse to this region and helped initiate its use on farms here. He bred and raised the horses in the 1870 brick barn at the Glidden Homestead. Later, Glidden’s involvement in Percheron breeding leads to an Illinois Appellate Court case in 1893.

Rob Glover, Glidden Homestead executive director, will present the program “Percherons: The Glidden Horses” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 22. Also on that day, from noon to 4 p.m., visitors can tour Joseph Glidden’s home and homestead where barbed wire was invented, see a working blacksmith shop and visit the 1870s brick barn.

“Many people don’t associate Percherons with Joseph Glidden,” Glover said in a news release. “But his work with them is unique and is as innovative as his work with barbed wire.

Sources even allow us to trace by name many of the horses he bred.”

Programs at Glidden Homestead are made possible in part by the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund.

This year’s theme is “A Treasure at 160” since 2021 marks the 160th anniversary of Joseph Glidden’s home. A National Register of Historic Place site, it is the home where Glidden lived when he invented barbed wire. The home was extensively remodeled in 1910 by a prominent architect and continued as a Glidden family residence until it became a museum in 1998.

Joseph Glidden developed barbed wire in DeKalb in 1873 and went on to patent numerous other inventions.

Joseph Glidden the homestead site through the winter of 1873 into the spring of 1874, when the operation moved into town.

Glidden built the Glidden House Hotel in downtown DeKalb that opened in 1877. In June 1879, J.F. Glidden Publishing bought the DeKalb County Chronicle that had been started earlier that year. Glidden was mayor of DeKalb from 1881-1883.

Youth can explore ‘Architecture Adventure’ at Ellwood Museum THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – Youth programs are back at the Ellwood House Museum with the free series “Ellwood Explorers: Picnics in the Park.”

One Sunday each month, bring a lawn chair or blanket, a picnic lunch, and some friends to enjoy a weekend morning at Ellwood Park. Each event features a historical or site-based theme, with activities scattered around the museum grounds. August’s program, “Architecture Adventure,” will highlight the colors, shapes and textures of the park’s seven historic buildings.

“Architecture Adventure” will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29.

Each event is planned with social distancing in mind, and all activities can be completed solo or in small groups.

An Earth Bill Teach-in will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 20, at Peace Corner in Memorial Park, at the corner of First Street and Lincoln Highway in DeKalb The event will feature speakers on the Earth Bill, the Climate Crisis Policy’s stand on transitioning to renewable energy to minimize the use of fossil fuels, and the importance of democracy and voting rights. In addition, to put emphasis on some important points, there will be related music, art and movement activities.

This event is free and open to the public.

In July 2020, a national coalition was started by Climate Crisis Policy to bring the major green organizations, local climate action groups, and interested individuals together to work on legislation to combat climate change.

This coalition looked at existing policy legislation and worked with scientists and lawyers on a new piece of legislation that meets scientific recommendations. The Earth Bill is now ready to submit to the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Klein sworn in as associate circuit judge

SYCAMORE – Speaking to a courtroom full of people at the DeKalb County Courthouse on Aug. 9, recently retired circuit judge Robbin Stuckert described Stephanie Klein as “just, unflappable, diligent, gracious and educated.”

“The first letter of those words spells ‘judge,’ and she has all the qualities of a good judge,” Stuckert said.

“She exemplifies all of those traits.”

Klein was sworn in as an associate judge of the 23rd Judicial Circuit on Aug. 9. She worked as First Assistant State’s Attorney in the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office until December, when she opened her own private practice.

Klein is one of five associate judges who are appointed by eight circuit judges, who are all elected into office.

Klein will serve a four-year term.

Klein, who graduated from DePauw University in Indiana in 1996 and the University of Illinois’ College of Law in 1999, had a private legal practice and was the DeKalb County assistant state’s attorney for 20 years. Originally from DeKalb, Klein has been married to her husband, Rob, for 17 years and they have two daughters,

Julia, 12, and Alyssa, 9.

Klein’s mom, Cherie Durfee-Smith, said that even as a child, her daughter had the characteristics of a good judge.

“I’d never let her argue with me because she’d always win,” DurfeeSmith said. “She has always been very logical and so well-prepared. While she was growing up, several of her teachers and family members told her that she talks just like an attorney, she should think about a career in law.”

Klein said she is looking forward to joining the bench and “doing work that helps the community.”

“I’m so humbled that the circuit judges would place this amount of trust in me, and I will work hard to fulfill the legal needs of the community as a judge,” she said.

Robert Pilmer, chief judge of the 23rd Judicial Circuit, said Klein was chosen from 18 applicants for the role of associate judge.

“It was a tough choice, but she stood out among the rest,” Pilmer said. “She had the traits exemplified by judges, was well-prepared, knowledgeable and had a calm demeanor. I’m excited to have her join our ranks. A judge’s role is to serve the community, and I’m positive that she will make a good addition to the judiciary in the 23rd Circuit.”

Cruisin’ to Genoa Car Show

Sherry Frankenbach, event organizer for the Aug. 21 Cruisin’ to Genoa car show, said show organizers are going to ask patrons “to be responsible” and continue to socially distance and for participants to park cars farther apart than they normally would.

“We’re hoping the fact that we’ll be outside will help mitigate a lot of problems,” Frankenbach said.

She said the car show will be on a stretch of road “a little longer than three blocks” and the show “will use the whole street both sides.” She said the show should be able to accommodate multiple comfort levels “as well as keep people safe and healthy.”

Frankenbach said there also will be hand sanitizer available at the festival at the registration desk. She said Waste Management also will have sanitation stations by the port-a-potties.

Frankenbach said event organizers will not be handing out spare face masks for patrons.

“But people are obviously welcome to wear them,” Frankenbach said.

Frankenbach added food trucks will be at the show as well.

“We truly just hope that people will come by and have a good time,” Frankenbach said. “We keep our fingers crossed and hope for good weather.”

DeKalb Corn Fest

Lisa Angel, chair of DeKalb Corn Fest set for Aug. 27 through 29 in downtown DeKalb, said one of the main changes patrons can expect this year is to the festival’s community stage.

The community stage used to be at First Street and Lincoln Highway in DeKalb and is the performance site for local groups during the festival. This year it will be located inside the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. “This will be a nice air-conditioned event where people can sit comfortably … and they can see the new and improved Egyptian Theatre,” Angel said. The theater recently underwent a significant expansion and now includes air conditioning inside.

Corn Fest’s main sound stage and beer garden will remain outside.

Jeanine Holcomb, marketing and communications director for the theater, said “the Egyptian continues to follow CDC guidelines and strongly recommends masks for everyone in

Another change will include the festival’s popular Chuck Siebrasse Corn Boil on Saturday, Aug. 28. The lineup will be at Fourth Street and Lincoln Highway and twist north instead to help maintain social distancing, Angel said.

Tickets for the sound stage are also being sold online this year, Angel said, and patrons won’t have to worry about long lines or much cash handling.

Online ticket sales are also meant to help organizers monitor event capacity in real time.

That way, if festival organizers end up having to limit attendance per health guidance, they have the ability to stop online ticket sales.

“That’s a great reason to buy early,” Angel said.

Angel said the adjustments for this year’s festival are being made so “there isn’t a lot of standing around and congregating.”

“We’re just trying to make sure we have smooth flow for everything,” Angel said.

Angel said there will be extra sanitation dispensers set up throughout the festival. She also said unvaccinated patrons will be asked to wear masks.

“We’re prepared for anything,” Angel said. “Safety is our No. 1 concern.”

Sycamore Ribs, Rhythm and Brews Fest

The sixth annual Ribs, Rhythm and Brews Fest is headed to Sycamore on Aug, 28, and Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, said organizers intend to move forward with the event as

planned prior to the pandemic.

“We of course, as we always have, will advocate safety for staff, volunteers, vendors and event attendees,” Treml said. “And as always, we will ask our vendors to have strategies to maintain healthy operations.”

Treml said event organizers will continue to keep an eye out for “complete regulatory awareness of local and state regulatory agency policies related to our door group gatherings” throughout the event planning process. The event – which will feature live music and a vast beer selection – is free admission and will include four vendors competing for DeKalb County Rib Champion.

“We believe our community is ready to put 2020 behind us and get on with our lives,” Treml said. “It’s simple – we all need to dance a little, laugh a lot, dine on some mouth-watering ribs, cool off with a cold one or two and just be with our family, our friends, our neighbors and our community.”

In addition to farming, he enjoyed woodworking, gardening, traveling, making things for his grandchildren, and collecting Farmall tractors (working and toy) and other farm implements. On July 3, 2021 the Plapp Family Agricultural Heritage Museum was dedicated at a wonderful 90th birthday celebration attended by over 100 family and friends. Elvin was very active at Northwest Malta United Methodist Church including holding the Office of Treasurer for over 40 years and Mission Coordinator for many years.

Elvin is survived by two sons; Larry (Kathie) of Delavan, Wisconsin, Rick (Gina) of Carmel, Indiana. He has three grandchildren: Megan Plapp of Rochester, Minnesota, Audrey and Evan Plapp of Carmel, Indiana; his brother, Edgar of DeKalb, Illinois and a sister, Shirley

SYCAMORE – Delivery of Meals on Wheels by the Voluntary Action Center of Northern Illinois from its Sycamore kitchen have been suspended temporarily because of the need for emergency repairs.

According to a news release from VAC, staff will be contacting all affected Meals on Wheels clients to offer the option of shelf-stable meal deliveries, while staff address the

needed repairs.

VAC hopes to have regular meal service restored by Friday, Aug. 20, according to the release.

“VAC recognizes this impact of this disruption on our clients and [is] working to address the repairs as quickly as possible,” the release stated.

Meals on Wheels clients who have any questions on service during this time are encouraged to call VAC at 815-758-3932.

Helping seniors adapt to automotive tech METRO CREATIVE Modern automobiles are more technologically advanced than ever before. That tech isn’t just making driving more comfortable and convenient, but also more safe.

In a recent analysis of motor vehicle accidents, researchers at the International Institute for Highway Safety found that vehicles with blind spot and lane departure warning systems were involved in 11% fewer sideswipes and head-on crashes than cars that did not feature such systems. In addition, the IIHS estimates that the number of automobile crashes in the United States could be decreased by 85,000 each year if every vehicle were outfitted with a lane departure warning system.

Driver assistance systems have made driving safer for millions of people across the globe, but one demographic may need some extra help adapting to modern vehicles, and may even need a little extra encouragement to utilize tech that can keep them safe behind the wheel. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that, in 2018, the United States was home to 45 million licensed drivers aged 65 and over. That marks a 60 percent increase since 2000. Though seniors’ perceived unwillingness or inability to utilize modern technology is often overstated, some aging drivers may need a little extra help as they try to learn how to use assistance technologies in their vehicles.

• Learn the tech yourself. Assistance technologies are not all one and the same. Vehicle manufacturers have their own systems and there can be a learning curve when adapting to a new one. If you aspire to teach a senior how to utilize the assistance

technologies in his or her vehicle, first learn the tech on your own. If both you and your aging friend or family member own a Subaru, chances are you already know how to use the tech in your loved one’s vehicle. If you drive cars made by different manufacturers, visit the dealership where your loved one bought his or her car and ask for a quick tutorial on all the safety features in the vehicle. Salesman demonstrate these features every day, so it shouldn’t take long for them to show you the ropes.

• Be patient. Each person adapts to a new technology at his or her own pace. It’s important to remain patient when teaching aging drivers how to use the tech in their vehicles. Old habits die hard, and while some drivers may quickly adapt to tech like backup cameras, others may not be so quick to abandon driving techniques they’ve been safely using for decades. Stay the course, remain patient and allow senior drivers to adapt at their own pace.

• Teach one tech at a time. It can be overwhelming for drivers of all ages to adapt overnight to all the tech in their new vehicles. When teaching senior drivers how to utilize various driver assistance technologies, take it one tech at a time. When coupled with your patience, this approach can help seniors avoid being overwhelmed and increases the likelihood that they will embrace the tech in their vehicles.

Many senior drivers utilize driver assistance technologies every day. A patient and methodical approach to showing seniors how their vehicles can help them stay safe behind the wheel can be a road map to helping seniors adapt to life in modern vehicles.
