WEEK IN REVIEW DeKalb Council OKs $1.5M IDOT grant

krettke@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In a special meeting May 31, the DeKalb City Council approved a nearly $1.5 million in state funding to add traffic signals and other safety improvements to the intersection of Route 23 and Gurler Road.

City Manager Bill Nicklas said the intersection improvements came about following a traffic study as the city’s south side sees significant economic development. Ferrara Candy Co. announced in January 2020 it would build a distribution center on the land, and

social media giant Facebook announced in July 2020 a data center would come next.

The area is expected to generate a large amount of truck traffic as industry settles in, Nicklas said.

“The extraordinary development on the south side of DeKalb is no surprise to anyone,” Nicklas said. “And going back to the Ferrara announcement ... and the announcement of Facebook it was obvious to us ... that with the projected traffic on South Fourth Street and in vicinity of Gurler Road there were going to have to be some improvements.”

The city council voted 6-0 to approve

the grant funding, with Ward 1 Alderman Carolyn Morris and Ward 6 Alderman Mike Verbic absent.

The agreement will provide $1,488,484 in Economic Development Program Funding from IDOT, which will include widening the intersection to add new turn lanes wide enough for truck movements and full signalization of the intersection in all four directions. Nicklas said a traffic study was also conducted for the intersection, which justified the need for improvements to mitigate traffic flow.

The state funding will cover nearly all of the more than $1.6 million project, according to city officials.

School board considers $1M staffing proposal

DeKALB – Citing the desire to meet more district needs for the coming 20212022 school year, the DeKalb School Board on June 1 mulled over hiring an additional $1 million worth of staff, which would be paid for with a government grant.

The positions will be paid for using the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief fund, according to district documents. The board will vote on the measure at the upcoming meeting July 15, during which Superintendent-elect Minerva Garcia Sanchez, who begins her new role July 1, is expected to participate virtually.

The proposed new hires would include positions for food service, school mental health clinicians, instructional assistants, a school nurse, and counselors, social workers and school psychologist.

resources for those in the district were also part of a survey conducted recently and discussed at the Strategic Planning Community Focus Group held May 20, officials said.

Parents, staff and community members listed and voted upon weaknesses and opportunities in five categories: student learning, programs and services, facilities, district finances and district-community relations.

Some of the most voted upon opportunities included: that class sizes are too big and schools are too small; a lack of support for teachers who connect with diverse learning needs; making the school day more productive for all students with different interests, abilities, needs, and long-term goals; more mental health support; more resources for working families; facilities should open up for youth in the community to have activities in evenings and weekends; and the volunteer

The most voted upon topic, with 23 votes, was “no one knows how the schools are funded.” The focus group asked for district finance information to be shared with community members.

The two food service staff members would be part of a plan to reopen Malta Elementary School’s kitchen, with total annual estimated salary and benefit costs for both a full-time and a part-time cook at $55,000.

According to the meeting’s agenda, reopening the kitchen will “increase the quality of food not only at Malta, but also at Founders, Tyler and Lincoln” elementary schools.” By reopening the kitchen, all food will be cooked and transported to each elementary school, which will greatly reduce the time food is held in warmers.

The reopening of the school’s kitchen will be voted upon during the June 15 board meeting.

krettke@shawmedia.com Amid a drop in local COVID-19 vaccine demand, the DeKalb County Health Department will shift gears to a new vaccine distribution model, as the Illinois National Guard has ended its deployment.

During the past 10 weeks, the national guard and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Contractual Nurses aided the local health department’s mass vaccination efforts, which since March 17 has seen more than 34,612 vaccine shots administered, according to a news release from local health officials.

As of May 30, there have been 79,823 doses of vaccine administered to local residents, and 34.96%, or 36,408 residents out of the 104,143 total countywide population are fully vaccinated, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. That includes 10,603 residents who are 65 or older, and 25,802 residents who are between ages 16 and 64. Local data has not yet been updated to reflect those younger than 16.

That means about 80.5% of DeKalb County’s senior population is fully vaccinated, and about 36.15% of those between ages 16 and 64 are fully vaccinated.

Instead of mass vaccination clinics, which have become the norm at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center, the health department will soon begin a Monday through Friday walk-in option at the health department building in DeKalb, along with mobile clinics.

clinics, the DeKalb County Health Department is announcing that it will transition from a mass vaccination clinic model to offering additional mobile event opportunities and begin offering vaccine clinics five days a week at the Health Department,” the announcement states.

Local health officials have recently observed a decline in vaccine demand, especially amid the opening up of eligible ages with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine now available to teenagers as young as 12, citing the school-age population as the “only true demand” for local vaccine these days.

vocation Center will be Thursday, June 10, and all clinics after that date will not require any registration. Instead, clinics will be available as mobile opportunities throughout the county and offered at the DeKalb County Health Department, no appointment required.

Since Jan. 14, in collaboration with NIU, local health officials have provided 61 clinics and more than 44,642 vaccinations at the Convocation Center site, said Lisa Gonzalez, public health administrator for the DeKalb County Health Department.

Residents who are due for their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines after June 10, are urged to walk in for their second dose at the health department or with another COVID-19 vaccine provider. It’s important to check the walk-in clinic schedule so that people go on the correct vaccine day of the week. Participants are asked to be vigilant about which vaccine is offered each day.

Beginning Tuesday, June 1, the Health Department will have walk-in clinics five days a week: • Monday through Friday – Johnson & Johnson vaccine is offered (For those 18 and older) • Tuesday and Thursday – Pfizer vaccine is offered (This is the only vaccine currently offered to those as young as 12. If you are under 18, you need to have a parent or guardian with you to receive the vaccine) • Monday, Wednesday and Friday – Moderna vaccine is offered (For those 18 and older) Walk-in clinics are between the hours of 8:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 1 and 3:30 p.m. at the DeKalb County Health Department, 2550 N. Who would you like to see go on the record? Let us know at readit@midweeknews.com DeKALB – For many, using U.S. currency is easy, an everyday task taken for granted. For people with visual impairments, telling a $5 bill from a $10, or a $20 bill from a $100, can be impossible.

To help people with visual impairments differentiate currency, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing is distributing free electronic bill readers. The readers, called iBill devices, were first released in January 2015. To date, more than 82,000 iBills have been distributed to eligible U.S. citizens and legal residents.

Through the work of Susan Dalton, Northern Illinois University is now a distribution location of the iBill.

Dalton is an adjunct instructor in NIU’s College of Education, in the department of Special and Early Education. She contacted the treasury to request devices to use in one of her classes, which led to an invitation for NIU to become a federal iBill distribution site.

Dalton spoke to MidWeek reporter Katrina Milton about the iBill and how it helps visually impaired people have more independence.

Milton: What is the iBill?

Dalton: The iBill is a small electronic device created by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing. It is a small device, similar in size to a car remote fob. If you slide a dollar bill into it, it will vocally announce the bill’s denomination or it will beep. You can also set it to a vibrating mode for privacy or to help people who are both deaf and blind.

It’s very simple and easy to use.

Milton: How can people apply for and receive an iBill?

Dalton: People can get the iBill directly from the treasury online at www.BEP.gov. NIU is a distributor of the iBill. Anyone in the U.S. that is a legal resident or citizen can apply for an iBill and receive one for free through the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The one-page application is easy to fill out, but it’s needed to certify that the person has a visual impairment.

Milton: Why is the iBill useful?

Dalton: It’s been a problem to have currency in the U.S. that can be used and easily recognized by people with visual impairments. The treasury has tried using Braille, but it doesn’t last.

Right now, our bills have different colors and large numbers on the back of the bills, but it’s not really enough.

Milton: How do other countries differentiate their bills?

Dalton: In other countries, their treasuries use an engraving process on their coins and bills so that there is a raised line to indicate a certain currency amount. Some also have bills with different sizes, so it makes distinguishing between bills easier.

Milton: How can the iBill help people with visual impairments?

Dalton: It allows them more independence. It’s difficult to have money management and to even complete day-to-day tasks, like shopping, if you are unable to differentiate between different dollar bills. If someone loses their vision later in life, requiring someone else to handle your money is a big adjustment. Being able to handle your own money is really important for independence.

Milton: Why is visual impairment education important?

Dalton: Our population is aging, and many visual impairments are age-related, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.

Having people knowledgeable and able to help with these issues is very important. Having teachers and professionals well-versed in technology is helpful.

NIU has one of the largest vision programs in the country. There are four specializations in the visual disabilities program: a teacher of students with visual impairments, orientation and mobility, visual rehabilitation therapy and assistive technology used by persons with visual impairments.

kfinlon@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott announced May 28 he will retire after serving more than 50 years with the agency, including nearly four decades as sheriff.

Scott wrote in a news release from the sheriff’s office he will retire as DeKalb County sheriff, a role he has had since 1985, as of June 23. He said he chose to retire now “after several months of prayer and consultation with trusted friends.”

He said he plans to remain local in retirement.

“My greatest appreciation and love are for my wife, Marcia, and all our children who being the sheriff’s family, endured and sacrificed much along the way,” Scott wrote in his statement. “Our family will remain here in DeKalb County, ready to assist when called upon but never interfering.”

Scott, 74, said he still cares about the job and the sheriff’s office. He said there wasn’t any specific catalyst that pushed him to retire now and his reasons for departure were not health related, adding that he still feels good and healthy.

“I still love the job and I’m still able to do it,” Scott said. “But time is passing by quickly.”

Scott said the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t prompt any urgency to retire, either.

“I didn’t want to leave as we were in the middle of it,” Scott said. “I think, if anything, it slowed my decision, my final decision.”

Scott also said his reasons for leaving don’t coincide with the over 600-page police reform bill signed by the governor in February in Springfield, a move which was not supported by many in law enforcement, both local and statewide. In January, Scott called the then-proposed bill an “attack” on law enforcement and officers’ “ability to do their jobs.”

Pritzker signed the legislation, House Bill 3653, referred to as the “Safe-T Act,” during an event at Chicago State University alongside members of his administration and lawmakers from the Black caucus. The bill was an initiative of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, and abolishes cash bail, overhauls police certification and reforms use-of-force standards among numerous other provisions. The original version of the bill abolished cash bail effective immediately, but that timeline was extended by two years to accommodate the transition and allow for uniform standards to be developed.

“Let me be clear, I do not leave because of the foolishness of the [Democrat] led state legislature under the guise of ‘police reform.’ ... Actually, those legislative actions make me want to stay longer,” Scott wrote in his parting statement. “I retire now because it is time to step aside for the next generation of leadership that will benefit the citizens of DeKalb County and the sheriff’s office itself.”

Scott, who is a foster parent along with his wife Marcia, also recalled a recent conversation with his 9-year-old adopted daughter, who told him that he is only home early in the morning and later at night.

Though the conversation happened after he made the decision, “it kind of reaffirmed that I needed to be home now and help Marcia,” Scott said.

Scott said one of the first and main things he will be doing is helping his wife at home on a more regular basis. Even though the couple has two more years of their fostering license, the plan is to start slowing down with that, he said.

Scott recognized those who supported him “throughout these many years” since his career at the sheriff’s office began in 1969. He also gave a nod to those who served with him within the agency and county government.

“My gratitude is extended also to those most trusted individuals who provided counsel, wisdom and friendship during the challenges, joys and difficulties that come with the office of sheriff,” Scott wrote. “We all have worked together to build upon the professional foundation of the sheriff’s office that was already established when I took office.

Scott wrote DeKalb County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Andy Sullivan will perform sheriff’s duties until the County Board appoints a new sheriff in August. He cited state law and said Sullivan will “have the same powers and be liable to same penalties and proceedings as if [he] were sheriff, until another sheriff is elected or appointed and qualified.”

Sullivan said Scott’s announcement didn’t take him by surprise and he started having the conversation about retirement with Scott a few months ago.

He said he started more heavily considering what’s next for him career-wise – and, after putting more thought into it, he realized becoming sheriff for DeKalb County was something he eventually wanted.

Sullivan, a registered Republican like Scott, would be eligible for consideration for appointment.

Sullivan said he eventually wants to run for the sheriff’s office during the next election. He said he never wanted to run against Scott in previous sheriff elections because he respected Scott too much.

Sullivan said he has valued Scott’s abundant institutional knowledge, guidance and friendship in the 25 years he has been in the sheriff’s office, starting as a law enforcement intern.

“I just can’t put into words what the man means to me,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said he believes Scott has “built more than a solid foundation over the course of his 50 years.”

“When you think of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, you think of Roger Scott,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan said the initial focus for him come June 23 will be keeping up with sheriff’s operations until someone is appointed to the office. He said the sheriff’s office will continue its focus on community policing and will prepare the sheriff’s office to implement the new police reform changes, which are the “most substantial” that he has seen in his career so far.

“We just hope to continue that legacy going forward,” Sullivan said.

Scott, a vocal Christian, recalled Bible passages in his retirement statement, and said the election of a sheriff “is unique in law enforcement and part of the fabric of American democracy.”

“My often stated goal for the sheriff’s office is found in the New Testament scripture Romans 13:4,” Scott wrote. “Speaking of law enforcement, it states, ‘for he is the minister of God to thee for good ... and does not bear the sword in vain.’ The men and women of the sheriff’s office – in fact, in all of law enforcement – do good each and every time that they report for duty. Thank you, DeKalb County citizens, for your continued support.”

Scott said he wanted to make it a point to close out his statement with that verse and philosophy, with law enforcement remaining under scrutiny after several incidents across the country involving people dying in police shootings.

“I believe, despite what is going on in the world and in our nation, that every day law enforcement officers … do accomplish good every single day, every time they go on shift,” Scott said. “I think that’s getting overlooked too often.”

HOME GROWN Master Gardeners provide fresh produce to Salvation Army Food Pantry

T

he DeKalb County Master Gardeners first started gardening in a plot that is now part of the DeKalb County History Center in 2010. The garden was started by Master Gardeners Rod McQueen and Ron Johnson.

Through the years, the gardeners took the produce grown to various food pantries in the area.

“About two years ago, we decided to stick to one pantry, and we chose the DeKalb Salvation Army,” said Master Gardener Cathy Anderson.

“Last year, we grew between 800 and 900 pounds of produce throughout the year.”

The gardeners grow a variety of produce, including peppers, tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, mustard, radish, beets, Swiss chard, collard greens, raspberries and squash. All of the produce is grown organically, without chemical herbicides or pesticides.

The project is funded through the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed), in partnership with the University of Illinois Master Gardeners and 4-H. The garden project received a $4,000 grant to continue growing produce for the Salvation Army.

The project’s goal is to use team-specific expertise, community education and research-based intervention strategies to improve access to fruits and vegetables, improve food utilization at donation sites and increase community capacity to sustain the donation garden food system in food insecure communities throughout the state.

The gardeners take turns watering and tending the garden throughout the week, and they all work together and harvest produce every Tuesday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Erin Andrews, social services coordinator with the DeKalb Salvation Army, said the produce donated by the Master Gardeners “always goes very quickly.”

“The fresh produce is a nice supplement to our food pantry, and all of our clients love how fresh it is,” she said. “Fresh fruit, vegetables and meat are very expensive to buy.

Whenever we have any in our food pantry, it is very popular.”

Andrews said the donation of the produce “helps everyone in the community have access to fresh, healthy food.”

“It’s also a great collaboration with another organization,” she said. “They are really helping the community.”

Anderson said she enjoys volun-

teering at the garden and making a difference.

“Last year, we had five volunteers, and our youngest was 54,” Anderson said. “We worry about the sustainability of the project. We need scouting groups or a church organization to help us, so we know the garden will

continue when we’re not able to do it anymore. We’re hoping somebody will take an interest and help us continue the garden.”

Master Gardener John Prendergast has been volunteering in the garden for about seven years after his neighbor told him about the project.

“It’s a great volunteering opportunity, and I get to socialize,” he said.

“It’s also a way to help out families in need in the area, giving them fresh produce.”

Directed by Scott Montavon, who last directed “Young Frankenstein” several years ago, “Love Letters” focuses on the correspondence between Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, who are childhood friends. Their writing begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Though each are romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years and into adulthood. The two didn’t always like each other but always loved one another.

Montavon said one of the big takeaways of the popular play is that it is possible for two people to love each other no matter what time or distance and life does to them.

It’s been awhile since the cast and crew of “Love Letters” have performed at Stage Coach Theatre.

Bonnie Miller, who plays Melissa Gardner, hasn’t performed at Stage Coach since “Noises Off” during the summer of 2019.

“I did a few plays on Zoom during the pandemic, and it’s just not the same when you can’t hear or see the audience,” she said in a news release. “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know these characters in ‘Love Letters’ and their complex relationship, and I can’t

Glidden Homestead opens for ‘A Treasure at 160’ THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – Glidden Homestead and Historical Center will open for the programing season and visitor tours of the site on Sunday, June 13.

The public is invited from noon to 4 p.m. to Opening Day, Open Barn to see the new aspects of the 2021 season, tour Joseph Glidden’s Home and Homestead where barbed wire was invented, see a working blacksmith shop, and visit the 1870s brick barn.

This year’s theme is “A Treasure at 160” since 2021 marks the 160th anniversary of Joseph Glidden’s home. A National Register of Historic Place site, it is the home where Glidden lived when he invented barbed wire. The home was extensively remodeled in 1910 by a prominent architect and continued as a Glidden family residence until it became a museum in 1998. “‘After more than a year, Glidden Homestead is welcoming visitors again,” Rob Glover, executive director of Glidden Homestead, said in a news release. “As we all start to get out to do things and have fun again, you can

make that visit to Glidden Homestead that you’ve always been meaning to make.”

Joseph Glidden developed barbed wire in DeKalb in 1873 and went on to patent numerous other inventions.

Barbed wire production continued at the homestead site through the winter of 1873 into the spring of 1874, when the operation moved into town.

Glidden built the Glidden House Hotel in downtown DeKalb that opened in 1877. In June 1879, J.F. Glidden Publishing bought the DeKalb County Chronicle that had been started earlier that year. Glidden was mayor of DeKalb from 1881-1883.

1921 – 100 YEARS AGO

William G. Eckhardt of this city has been named as one of the chief executive officers of the greatest agricultural marketing organizations in the world, according to the official announcement of the personnel of the United States Grain Growers Inc., made late Saturday night.

Evidently some automobile owner who recently purchased a new Franklin did not carry a fire extinguisher and when his car caught fire just east of Meredith Sunday, the owner was powerless. The car was destroyed to such an extent that even the license number has been defaced beyond recognition and the owner’s name has not been learned as yet.

People who have passed the ruins say there is nothing left but the motor of the machine.

The work of grading the unfinished part of the cement road leading east of Elburn to the Boy’s Home is practically completed and the force of workers is now hauling materials with which to make the hard road. The government has ordered bakers to cut the size of bread loaves and rolls starting Saturday. Loaves will be 10 percent smaller by weight and probably somewhat flatter. The price will remain the same.

Bakers must indicate the weight of the loaf on the wrapper. Bakers who have difficulty getting new wrappers may use old ones provided they furnish retailer with signs describing the new loaf.

J.W. Walter Becker, president and general manager of Ideal Industries Inc., announced today that continued expansion of the company’s business makes it necessary to erect a large new addition to Ideal’s main plant. The approval to build has been granted by the Civilian Production Authority.

CCT offers summer theater camps for kids THE MIDWEEK Registration is open for Children’s Community Theatre’s two summer camps, which will be held for the first time at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb.

CCT has a fun-filled summer planned with plenty of opportunities for children to sing, dance, perform, laugh and enjoy time with friends.

“Camp Legally Blonde” is for campers entering eighth grade in the fall to those who graduated high school in 2021. It will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday, July 5-16, except on Saturday, July 10, which will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The camp will conclude with three performances of the fulllength musical “Legally Blonde” at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, July 17, and 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18.

“Camp Seussical” is for campers entering first through seventh grade in the fall. Camp will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Aug. 2-13. Camp will conclude with two performances of the musical “Seussical Jr.” at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15.

Rosette choir director featured at band concert The DeKalb Municipal Band’s second concert of the season will feature vocalist Gregor King, who will sing “Fly Me to the Moon,”“Feeling Good” and “Come Fly With Me.” The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 15, at the Dee Palmer Band Shell in Hopkins Park, 1403 Sycamore Road in DeKalb. The band is under the direction of Kirk Lundbeck.

King received a bachelor’s degree in vocal music education with a French minor from Millikin University in Decatur. During his collegiate career, he competed in the international competition Harmony Sweepstakes (an a cappella singing competition) and also traveled to China during the 2008 Olympic Games to sing with his collegiate choir.

King serves as the choir director for Clinton Rosette Middle School in DeKalb. He recently directed the musical “Annie Jr.” and sings tenor for the St. Charles Singers.

Other musical selections on the program include “The Nutmeggers March,” “Light Cavalry,” “The Fantasticks,” “Knights Of The Road,” “Themes Gregor King Like Old Times,” “The Midnight Flyer,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Ellington (Tribute to the Duke),” “Serenata” and “His Honor.”

Marcy Buick appointed 23rd Judicial Circuit Judge THE MIDWEEK Marcy Buick has been appointed Circuit Judge of the 23rd Judicial Circuit court, which includes DeKalb and Kendall counties, by the Illinois Supreme Court.

Buick’s appointment follows the retirement of longtime DeKalb County Circuit Court Judge Robbin Stuckert, according to a news release from the judicial court.

“We are excited to have Judge Buick continue her judicial career as a Circuit Judge in the 23rd Judicial Court,” Chief Judge Robert Pilmer said in a news release.

Buick, of Sycamore, has served as an associate judge in DeKalb County since September 2011, and was admitted to practice law in November 1990, and practiced law until her appointment as judge.

Buick will be sworn in on July 9 at

the DeKalb County Courthouse, and will officially begin her judicial duties that day, according to the release.

“Judge Buick has been an exceptional judge, and is eminently qualified to assume this new role,” DeKalb County Presiding Judge Bradley Waller said in the release.

Both Waller and Pilmer said the retire of Judge Stuckert creates a large void, “as she has been a dedicated advocate of the judicial system and the

people of DeKalb County, and she will be missed,” according to the release.

Buick was appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court upon the recommendation of Justice Michael J. Burke, the Illinois Supreme Court Justice for the Second District, which includes DeKalb County. She was appointed to fill the vacancy created by Stuckert, whose six-year term would have ended in 2022.

According to the release, Buick will run for a full term in 2022.

Hospital encourages women to schedule mammograms THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – A new clinical study will be launched in DeKalb as part of Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital’s efforts to address the decline in screening mammograms that was experienced during the pandemic.

The study will examine how education influences women to schedule their mammograms, with a 10% increase in mammograms as the set goal. The results will be published in a medical journal to help other organizations better serve their communities.

Women age 40 and older are encour-

aged to resume their annual screening mammograms to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most-treatable stages, said Kim Aldis, breast health navigator. Aldis and her colleagues will partner with primary care physicians and collaborate with community organizations to educate women about the importance of mammograms.

“The world seemed to stop when the pandemic began, but breast cancer continued,” Aldis said in a news release. “Mammography is a time-sensitive screening, and even a pause in screening by a few months will result in a delay of cancer detection for some

women. Early detection saves lives.”

Dr. Nitzet Velez, medical director of the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital Breast Health Center, said the benefits of mammograms outweigh the risks of acquiring COVID-19 during the screenings.

“Our hospital environment is a safe place for women to receive mammograms and for patients to receive care,” Velez said in the release. “We have taken every precaution to protect our patients and staff from COVID-19, and we want women to start being proactive about their health care again.”

Dr. Michael Hutchinson, a radiologist at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital, recommends that women have a conversation with their primary care physician or gynecologist about screening mammogram recommendations.

Pork chop dinner supports 4-H

On June 23, the DeKalb County 4-H Foundation along with the DeKalb Area Pork Producers will conduct the annual Pork Chop Drivethru Dinner at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau.

For $12 a ticket, diners will receive two pork chops, macaroni salad, baked beans, applesauce and a roll. Tickets can be purchased from area 4-H club members, Foundation Board members, the DeKalb County Extension Office or new this year, online.

Kish hosts floral design expert for demonstration THE MIDWEEK The Kishwaukee College Floral Design department hosted guest designer Trisha Locke on March 30, as part of the Artist In Residence program offered through the American Institute of Floral Designers.

Locke presented a virtual lecture to students in Associate Professor of Horticulture Janet Gallagher’s floral design class. The lecture covered different types of designs and techniques used to make floral arrangements. She also led a demonstration showcasing the techniques, which allowed the students to create their own landscape designs.

“I liked how Trisha was so organized,” student Sierrah Anderson said in a news release. “I learned how to use sticks differently in my spring arrangements by turning them into a fence.”

Kishwaukee College is one of only 13 colleges in the nation with a Student AIFD chapter. The AIR program is offered through the AIFD to bring together industry professionals and floral design students at colleges and universities that have Student AIFD chapters. Anderson said resources like these made Kish’s Horticulture Program the best option for pursuing her career goals.

“Kishwaukee offered the horticulture program, while the other community colleges near me didn’t. I really enjoy the community that the staff and students have created,” Anderson said in the release.

With nearly three decades of experience in the floral industry, Locke does freelance work for florists while running her own business called Locke Floral Studio in Champaign. She also helped start the floral

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – Nursing staff at Northwestern Medicine’s Kishwaukee and Valley West hospitals recently were awarded the Magnet Recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

According to a news release from Northwestern Medicine, the Magnet Recognition Program distinguishes health care organizations that meet rigorous standards for nursing excellence. The credential is the highest national honor for professional nursing practice, of which only 9% of all hospitals nationwide have earned, according to the release.
