WEEK IN REVIEW Proposed settlement in use of force suit

DeKALB – The City of DeKalb has reached a proposed $285K settlement agreement with Elonte McDowell, who sued the city in 2019 after he was placed in a chokehold by former Police Sgt. Jeffrey Weese, who resigned earlier this year.

McDowell sued the city after his 2019 arrest alleging Weese’s excessive use of force and other damages, and asked for upwards of $1.5 million initially, confirmed DeKalb City Attorney Matt Rose.

DeKalb County is named in the lawsuit, but the proposed settlement does not include county parties.

However, according to city documents, plaintiff Elonte McDowell and DeKalb County “did not agree to a settlement at the settlement conference, and the Plaintiff is likely to continue to litigate his claims against the County of DeKalb.”

During McDowell’s arrest, he was also tased by a DeKalb County Sheriff’s Deputy while he was on the ground with Weese’s arm around his neck, video taken by his girlfriend on the scene showed.

DeKalb City Manager Bill Nicklas clarified the matter between McDowell and DeKalb County is separate from the settlement between McDowell and City of DeKalb that was set to go before the City Council for a vote during its meeting Monday at DeKalb Public Library.

“This agreement was agreed upon,” Nicklas said, referring to the city’s settlement in the U.S. District Court civil lawsuit.

Antonio Jeffrey, Elonte McDowell’s attorney in the federal civil case, declined comment about his reaction to the settlement between his client and the city.

“But I will say that we did reach a resolution,” Jeffrey said.

However, Jeffrey said the criminal lawsuit in federal court remains pending and has not reached a resolution as of yet.

Nicklas said the $285,000 settlement includes $185,000 being covered by the city’s insurance.

“The city has to pay for the $100,000 deductible, in effect,” Nicklas said.

Nicklas declined further comment on the case beyond the facts of the agreement.

In addition to Weese and the City of DeKalb, three other officers are named in the lawsuit, including Geoff Guzinski,

Danielle Sorenson, and Jordan Poulos.

Documents show McDowell signed the proposed agreement on April 9, and the officers signed it on April 12. Nicklas’ signature will be pending council approval.

In August 2019, Weese was captured on video from squad car dashboard camera and bystander cell phone footage wrapping his arm around the neck of Elonte McDowell, a Black man from Aurora, in what a police forensic doctor later described as a chokehold during a traffic stop and drug arrest.

DeKalb police had received a tip that McDowell was coming to DeKalb to sell marijuana. Weese was placed on desk duty and then suspended, the subject of multiple internal and external use of force investigations, and the catalyst of continued calls for local police reform in DeKalb.

Weese was placed on desk duty pending an investigation by the Illinois State Police, which later included a DeKalb County grand jury who in December declined to press criminal charges against Weese. The ISP investigation did not include any findings specifying whether the state agency determined Weese had violated any use of force policies or used a chokehold.

Old Navy celebrates grand opening in DeKalb

Old Navy is located at 2439 Sycamore Road in the Oakland Place shopping center, the former location of Barnes & Noble.

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The store was initially anticipated to open August or September 2020, but Mid-America Management Corp. delayed the opening of any new stores, including the new Old Navy location, until this year because of the pandemic.

the building’s space, with the remaining 7,000 square feet available for another retailer.

Old Navy was previously located between Michael’s and T.J. Maxx and left the shopping center in February 2012. The former location was divided into two retail spaces: Five Below and the former DSW. According to the city, the store has created about 40 jobs.

GENOA – Joseph Dillett, 78, has been carving wood since he was a teenager.

He has created beautifully detailed architectural wood carvings in doors, altars and statues for churches. His carvings are spread across the United States. Locally, Dillett has a carving installed at the DeKalb County Farm Bureau.

Dillett donated a wood relief carving that will be auctioned off to support DeKalb County Community Gardens’ Genoa Area Community Food Hub. The 23-by-11.5-inch butternut wood relief carving depicts the Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Museum and the adjacent Genoa Water Works Building.

A starting bid of $1,500 has already been received. The final winning bid of the silent auction will be gifted to DCCG via Give DeKalb County, an annual day of giving for more than 100 local nonprofit organizations.

Milton: When did you start wood carving?

Dillett: I started carving in 1957. I was a freshman in high school. I went to a monastery, and that’s where I learned, the Society of the Divine Word in Techny, Illinois. I was always drawing in grade school, and I was interested in art. The monks asked me if I’d like to learn wood carving, so I learned.

Milton: Why wood carving?

Dillett: I like the warmth of the wood.

I do stone carving, too, and I like the hardness of the stone. Wood is very versatile and there’s a big demand for it. There are a lot of wood carving clubs, with carvers that do it as a

ried in, their home, their favorite tractor and lettering. It’s something to pass down to their children as an heirloom. I often go through the family’s photo album with them to choose photos and images, creating the stories they’d like to share.

Milton: What are other items you’ve created?

Dillett: I have also carved altars and statues. I recently carved table legs to send to England and a front desk for a new hotel in Lansing, Michigan. I also just finished a marble bust of the Blessed Mother for St. Paul’s Church in Sandwich. I am working on greeting cards of Genoa: the main street, the entryway to my subdivision, businesses and the food pantry. I hope to sell them as a way to fundraise for the food pantry. I will soon begin working on marble altar pieces for a church in Milwaukee. My brother will be doing the church’s stained glass.

Milton: Do you often do sacred art?

Dillett: I love doing work for churches. Sacred art is a different category of art. Art can make you fall in love, shock people and create emotions. I think sacred art should unite people and move them toward Christ.

Milton: What advice do you have for aspiring artists?

Dillett: You have to have the passion.

St. Francis of Assisi has a quote: “He who works with his hands is a laborer.

He who works with his hands and his head is a craftsman. He who works with his hands and his head and his heart is an artist.” An artist, without effort, creates what’s in his heart. I think that I’m a craftsman trying to become an artist, trying to touch on that effortless art.

Larry Gregory is professor emeritus at Northern Illinois University’s School of Art and Design – Photography. This selection of photographs shows Gregory’s versatility within the medium of photography. His images portray environments with book worthy experiences prompting the stills that transform into photographic prints with richly defined shadow details and highlights kissed with the

white of the paper.

Steven Tritt is an alum of Northern Illinois University and holds a Master of Fine Art degree in painting. Before the pandemic, Tritt became interested in one of the origins in making America great, the extermination of the American bison. His paintings are graphic in the manner of his expressionistic method of painting with paints and additives holding true to himself by using enough abstraction for visual interpretation. One painting actually has a visually putrid air about itself.

A closing reception is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, May 1. Masks and social distancing are required.

KC to host plant sale with contactless pickup The Kishwaukee College Horticulture Program will host its annual plant sale online due to the ongoing pandemic. Plants will be available through online preorders with contactless pickup available from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, May 7.

SANDWICH – A Moderna vaccine clinic will be offered by the DeKalb County Health Department on April 29 at Sandwich High School, 515 Lions Road.

According to a social media announcement by the county health department, the clinic will be for those seeking a first dose of the Moderna vaccine.

Those interested can book a spot using the online sign-up schedule at www.events.juvare.com/IL-IDPH. You must be at least 18 years old or older to receive the Moderna vaccine.

Per DeKalb County Health Department policy, wherever you receive your first dose, you will be expected to receive your second dose at the same spot, and will be able to schedule your second dose at the time of your first dose appointment.

LIFE’S ACHIEVEMENTS After nearly 40 years, Hirschbeins to retire from trophy and engraving business

YCAMORE – When Ken and Ann Hirschbein started a trophy and engraving business in their basement 39 years ago, they never thought it would become a full-time business.

The couple started Hirschbein Trophies & Engravables in 1982. In 1994, the business moved to its first brick and mortar location, 215 Sacramento St. in Sycamore, and in 2005, it moved to its current location, 202 S. California St. At the end of May, the store will close and the Hirschbeins will retire.

“Ken started the business in our basement, working on orders parttime during the nights and on weekends,” Ann Hirschbein said. “It took on a life of its own, and we have been fortunate for it to be as successful as it was.”

Through the years, the business has engraved all kinds of items, including trophies, plaques, awards, acrylics and giftware. Unique items engraved at the store include awards for comedian and actor Bob Hope and U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

In addition to making trophies for local groups, including Boy Scout troops and sports teams, the Hirschbeins have created awards for the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival, Maple Park Parade, Genoa Days, Coon Creek Country Days in Hampshire and the Kirkland water fights. Historical houses in Sycamore also have a plaque created by the business in their front yards.

“We loved being part of everyone’s celebration,” Ann Hirschbein said.

“Everyone was happy when they came into our store because they were either receiving or giving an award.”

The business also has created memorial plaques, including cemetery and urn plates, garden bench memorials and the plaque in Fairdale to remember those who lost their lives in the 2015 tornado.

Ken Hirschbein sometimes knew privileged information about who won an award before the winner was announced.

retired plant manager at the Chicago Sun-Times and Daily News and Ann Hirschbein, 73, is a retired schoolteacher. The couple, who will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary this year, look forward to traveling and spending time with their family during retirement. They have two daughters, a son and two grandchildren.

“We’re going to miss our customers because they became our friends, even if we only saw them once or twice a year,” Ken Hirschbein said.

“We want to thank all of our customers for being so loyal through the years.”

THE MIDWEEK Shopko Optical, an eye care provider for more than 40 years, is opening a center in DeKalb.

The new location at 2101 Sycamore Road is expected to open in June and will be the sixth Shopko Optical center in the Chicago area, according to a news release. Wrennhouse Fund expresses love, provides opportunity THE MIDWEEK A new donor-advised fund has been established through the DeKalb County Community Foundation. The Wrennhouse Fund provides donors Kent and Kris Wrenn a charitable way to express their love for the Sycamore community and the nonprofit organizations that serve it.

Kris Wrenn moved to Sycamore in 1972 at the start of third grade when her family purchased a flower shop, Kar-Fre Flowers (named after her parents, Karen and Fred Rhynders). After graduating from Sycamore High School and then Northern Illinois University, Kris joined the family business where she has spent her career. Kent Wrenn grew up in the village of Winfield. Upon meeting Kris, he realized his future belonged in Sycamore with her so after graduating from the University of Iowa, he moved to Sycamore.

Kent has spent his career in manufacturing as a human resources professional specializing in talent development. Their children, Lucy and Madeline, were both born and raised in Sycamore and are graduates of Sycamore High School.

More than $130K awarded in COVID-19 relief grants THE MIDWEEK SYCAMORE – More than $130,000 has been awarded to DeKalb County organizations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to an announcement by the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

The DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Fund advisory committee announced that a total of $130,563 was awarded to 20 local charitable organizations during the fourth round of DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Grants.

The DeKalb County COVID-19 Response Grant program was designed to support the needs of people in DeKalb County during the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizations who received funding during this fourth round of grantmaking include: • 4-C: Community Coordinated Child Care – $7,500 for COVID-19 relief for in-home childcare providers in DeKalb County.

An oil well with several hundred gallons capacity per minute was discovered in DeKalb yesterday afternoon but there will be no stock sold by the concern, but a considerable loss marked up on the accounting books of Sawyer & Sons. The boys were filling the second tank from the one across the street from the garage and the cap happened to be off the pipe on the south side of the road. As the big pump began pulling the oil from across the street there was a geyser of gasoline for several minutes and many gallons were lost before the matter could be remedied.

On such days when the weather man is congenial, the contractors in charge of construction of the new hospital have bricklayers at work. The work has already started there, but the uncertainty of the weather makes it impossible to get much of the work done. The contracting firm hopes the weather will settle down to a certain steadiness within the next few days and that the work there will go forward much more rapidly.

W.F. Snyder, district manager for the Standard Oil company, received word by wire this morning of a decline in the price of gasoline of three cents a gallon and kerosene also three cents a gallon.

At the service stations, gasoline now sells at 22.6 cents and from the wagons 21.6 cents a gallon. Kerosene from the wagons only is now selling at 11.6 cents a gallon. This is a first drop in gasoline prices that has been reported by the Standard Oil people for some time and is indeed welcome news to automobile owners.

Spring always brings in a number of complaints from all parts of the city relative to chickens running at large, and the police department members tire of chasing from one end of the city to the other in warning owners that it is a violation of the city ordinances.

Louis Moulton, who for some time has been affiliated with the fire department, has turned farmer and nearly every day he can be found at his “farm” southwest of town getting ready for spring work. Moulton has considerable small stuff planted and will cater to the users of fresh vegetables in the city believing that a truck farm that will raise anything, such as

1946 – 75 YEARS AGO

Announcement was made yesterday by the Federal Housing Authority in Chicago that a notice has been issued to a construction company to start work on dismantling and removal of barracks to be re-erected at the Northern Illinois State Teachers College in DeKalb. The W.E. O’Neil Construction Company of Chicago was issued a notice to proceed, effective Wednesday, May 1, with the dismantling and removal of eight barracks from Camp Weingarten, Mo., and their re-erection and conversion to provide 24 veterans’ emergency family units at the DeKalb college.

At 2 o’clock tomorrow morning, April 28, residents of DeKalb will move their clocks ahead one hour as DeKalb goes on daylight savings time. Fast time will be the official time in this city until September 29. Although daylight time becomes effective at the early hours Sunday, most of the residents will either move their clocks ahead an hour before retiring or will make the change when arising tomorrow morning. An hour of sleep will be lost tonight that will not be recovered until late in September. Chicago and many other cities will also start daylight savings time at 2 o’clock Sunday morning.

All residents of DeKalb are being urged to plant gardens again this year as

they did during the war years. Mayor Hugo J. Hakala has received a letter from Governor Dwight H. Green in which he urged the mayor stress the necessity for having gardens. During the war years, the Victory Garden campaign was most successful throughout the state with DeKalb cooperating to the fullest. In view of the acute worldwide shortage of food, it is imperative that another organized garden drive such as placed Illinois first during the war years be staged.

The pre-flight school conducted by Darel Carls, manager of the Sycamore airport, will start another class at the Community center. All telephone lines have been moved and arrangements have been made to move all light lines in the near future from their present position to that of east of the road at the airport site. In doing this, it makes possible to move the road over in the easterly direction, giving the new Sycamore airport more room to land and more safety due to the movement of the high wires.

The poles will then be painted according to aeronautical regulations.

1971 – 50 YEARS AGO

DeKalb firemen were called to the 1800 block of Sycamore Road at 9:20 a.m. today when a power line broke and fell across a gas pipeline regulator pit cover.

This electrical jolt burst the high pressure natural gas line causing flames to leap from the pit. Firemen extinguished the fire and the gas was turned off. Nearby at the Jewel Food Store, the power outage

A vote on an annexation agreement for the River Mist development was put off for two weeks while the developer works out details with some property owners. However, the DeKalb City Council did take a vote to deny a commercial lot of the 242-acre, 900-unit residential development at the corner of North First Street and Rich Road.

Duplex Products Inc. has signed a merger agreement with an Ohio-based company, but the future of much of the local business remains uncertain today.

The Reynolds and Reynolds Co., based in Dayton, Ohio, issued a cash-tender offer of $12 for about 7.5 million shares of Duplex stock, a sale which would total about $90 million.

Local author Sally M. Walker shows third-graders at Lincoln Elementary School “Born Near the Earth’s Surface,” a book she published in 1991 about sedimentary rocks. Walker has published five nonfiction science books and has short fiction stories published in “Highlights for Children” magazine. Walker has several more books in the works as well as four short fiction stories.

Innovation on display at senior design event Innovative technology was on display at the annual Senior Design Demonstration Day. The virtual event hosted by Northern Illinois University’s College of Engineering and Engineering Technology was held Friday, April 23. Visitors to the website interacted via live video chat with 72 student teams to learn about their projects.

The Senior Design course brings together concepts and principles learned in the classroom and bridges theory with practice. Students form teams and get hands-on experience solving real-world problems; the kind of engagement that is the foundation of the curriculum at NIU. The senior design program is a culmination of the learning experiences in our students’ engineering education. They apply the knowledge they acquired in the classroom to bring together concepts, theories, and construct a prototype or process. They also use problem-solving skills to

Along the way, they are mentored by faculty and industry professionals, and these projects are often viewed as a student’s first professional achievement.”

The teams work with industry sponsors to develop prototypes that create or enhance a product, system, process, automation, algorithm or smart technology. Or they may work with a research organization, such as Fermi National Laboratory, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab, Argonne National Laboratory or the Morton Arboretum.

For example, one team is working with the Kishwaukee Water Reclama-

tion District to detect COVID in populations through sewage testing.

In addition to the industry and research organization sponsored teams, there are nine teams that have challenges sponsored by other NIU colleges, 25 projects identified by engineering faculty and nine projects identified by students. One student team called the “Rock Valley Roasters” from the NIU engineering program at Rock Valley College in Rockford is developing a less expensive way to roast coffee.

Three projects were proposed by faculty in the College of Visual and Performing Arts that advance artistry and the design of musical instruments. One team is devising ways to forage steel for the Trinidadian steel drum, while another is working to advance the design of the berimbau, an African guitar-like instrument. A third team is working on a photography system that would enable individuals with disabilities to practice pho-

THE MIDWEEK How much wood could a woodchuck carve if a woodchuck could carve wood?

That question might be answered by wood carver Bill Mitchell at the general meeting of the Kishwaukee Valley Art League on May 6. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at Gallery On State, 322 W. State St. in Sycamore. The public is invited to attend the meeting and COVID-19 restrictions will be followed.

Mitchell, whose colorful work was recently displayed in the front window of Gallery On State, will demonstrate his wood projects at the meeting.

“Wood is more easily shaped than stone and more quickly also,” Mitchell said in a news release. “I will generally use these four tools: chain saw, band saw, sonic vibration cutter, and rotary tools.”

In his demonstration, Mitchell will use found wood such as logs, lumber and cut offs from contractor work.

Lincoln Elementary teacher honored with 2021 Wirtz Award THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – Ben Erickson, a fourth-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School, is the 2021 recipient of the Wirtz Award for Excellence in Education.

Erickson was surprised at his school on March 30 at a teacher luncheon.

The award is presented each year by the Wirtz Foundation. It was established in 1989 to honor the memory of William Wilbur Wirtz (1887-1965), Alfa White Wirtz (1883-1931) and Jeann Sohner Wirtz (1902-1985).

The Wirtz Award is intended to encourage those high standards of innovative achievement that bring quality to a public school system and vitality to a community. It is made available annually to recognize the distinguished service of outstanding individuals, currently employed by DeKalb School District 428, who raise young people’s sights or who promote a program or organization that lifts a student’s sense of human values and purpose.

Selection of the Wirtz Award was made from educators nominated and recommended by current District 428 staff and was based on the nominee’s ability to positively influence, motivate and inspire students.

THE MIDWEEK Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists will hold its second Choose To Move Northern Rehab Challenge from May 1-17.

Northern Rehab is challenging the community to get out and enjoy the great outdoors with some fun, new outdoor activities while helping to support area food pantries.

“For this spring event, we’re challenging our community to enjoy the great outdoors and explore local parks, wetlands, forest or nature preserves, new or favorite trails, park districts, or even your own neighborhood,” Melissa Beck, Northern Rehab physical therapist, said in a news release. “Physical activity plays an important role in our health, and we’ve created this event to be fun for all ages and great for the entire family. This is also a fundraiser for local food pantries.”

Participants can pick up or download an activity card that includes a variety of activities such as enjoy a new park or playground, try birdwatching, go fishing, explore a new wetland area, play an outdoor yard game, plant a garden, flowers or a tree, or help keep the community clean by picking up trash in your neighborhood.

Participants are challenged to complete four of the activities and turn in their card at any of Northern Rehab’s four locations in DeKalb (Sycamore Road or Lincoln Highway), Genoa or Rochelle.

Jeff Keicher, R- Sycamore, DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith, and members of the DeKalb American Legion, including Commander Dan Gallagher (USMC) and historian Michael Embrey (USAF) met at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Clock in Memorial Park to celebrate the 100th day of the club’s centennial year.

This short ceremony at the clock kicked off a morning of service for the 100th day of the year for the DeKalb Rotary Club. The club has selected as its Centennial Project the restoration of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Clock to working order. The clock is located in Memorial Park at the corner of First Street and Lincoln Highway. The clock is also celebrating 100 years, as is the DeKalb American Legion Post 66.

Prior to the photo opportunity, Keicher spoke of the honor the clock provides to local men and women in military service.

“The families that put money aside for this clock 100 years ago were establishing a legacy,” said Keicher. “At a time like this when our opinions talk past one another, we need to come to Memorial sites like this where we have commonality.”

Smith also commemorated the moment.

Paint-A-Plug program continues

Library suspends curbside pickup service DeKALB – The DeKalb Public Library is suspending curbside pickup service until further notice.

Patrons who are unable or unwilling to come into the library to pick up materials, should contact the library’s outreach coordinator at 815-756-9568, ext. 1500, or homebound@dkpl.org.

The library offers a free outreach and homebound service. Those who are homebound for any medical reason, for any length of time, are eligible for this service. Individuals living in senior assisted communities or other care facilities are also eligible to receive outreach service.

The DeKalb Public Library is open seven days a week.

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – The DeKalb Citizens’ Community Enhancement Commission announced another year of the Paint-A-Plug initiative, encouraging community members to adopt a fire hydrant and turn it into a work of art.

“There is no specific theme for the fire hydrants, but artists are encouraged to incorporate different elements of the community or their neighborhood into their art,” city officials posted on social media. “You may have seen some of the previous creations including an ear of corn, a dairy cow and a pharaoh across from the Egyptian Theatre.”

No fee is required to participate in the Paint-APlug program but approved artists are responsible for providing their own materials for painting.

OC Creative has pledged to donate $50 to each of this year’s Paint-A-Plug artists to help defray some of the cost of materials.

The program is not limited to DeKalb residents.

The CCEC encourages Northern Illinois University students and alumni, DeKalb School District students and faculty, employees of DeKalb businesses and area artists to participate.

Applications are available at cityofdekalb. com/1173/Paint-a-Plug. Submitted applications will be reviewed by the commission and, once a design is approved, artists will have until Nov. 1 to paint their assigned hydrant.

CORTLAND – The Cortland Community Library has been awarded $2,000 through the DeKalb County COVID19 Response Fund.

According to a news release, the money will be partly used to help cover the costs of safety measures that were put in place in the library during the pandemic.

Additionally, funds will be used to continue to pay for items such as masks, which are offered free to the public, hand sanitizer, and cleaning and safety supplies.

Library staff also have been creating free individually bagged take-and-go crafts, for all ages, placed in bins outside, so that all community members have easy access.

THE MIDWEEK DeKALB – This month marks the one-year anniversary of Westminster Presbyterian Church’s distribution of food packets to those in need through a series of weekly events.

The program is the result of a partnership between the church and several other organizations. Eighteen months prior to April 2020, the church, led by several college students among its members, had begun weekly Community Dinners, which provided a meal at no cost to approximately 200 persons every other week.

As the dinners grew, costs did as well, and the church secured the necessary funding from the DeKalb County Community Foundation’s Community Needs program.

“The Community Dinner events sprang from the efforts of a few college students who wanted to do something tangible to help our neighbors,” The Rev. Dr. Blake Richter, pastor at Westminster, said in a news release.

“They grew to be much larger than we ever imagined. When the pandemic began, many community members already received food at our church through the Community Dinners, so

we took the next step to establish the food pantry events.”

The emergence of COVID-19 in March 2020 made these in-person events impossible, so the church began providing food, including canned goods, dry goods, vegetables and fruits, milk and eggs, to recipients. With many families and individuals facing economic hardship during the pandemic, demand for food quickly increased.

By May, weekly events distributed as many as 250 50-pound packets of food per week, feeding an estimated total of 750-1,000 people. The DeKalb County Community Foundation provided additional funding through a series of grants, in part with the support of the State of Illinois’ COVID Response Program. Blackhawk Presbytery and the Synod of Lincoln Trails, regional administrative units of the Presbyterian Church, also provided financial assistance, as did the DeKalb County Regional Office of Education and Family Service Agency.

Several times during the pandemic the church also hosted US Department of Agriculture-funded Coronavirus Food Assistance Program events, which distributed a greater volume of

food to a larger number of recipients.

By the fall of 2020, program volunteers had noticed that many food recipients asked if the program also distributed diapers, and the program moved to fill this need with funds provided by individual church members, Family Service Agency, DeKalb Regional Office of Education, and DeKalb Church of Christ.

Chris Fussner, who leads the church program, spoke of the important role that DeKalb Community Gardens has played in the program’s success.

“Once we shifted to the direct provision of food packets, acquiring the food directly from the Northern Illinois Food Bank was pretty expensive,” Fussner said in the release. “It quickly got out of our price range.

Fortunately, the DeKalb Community Gardens was able to procure food at a much better price. Their collaboration has been vital to the program.”

Church member and program volunteer Robert Ridinger said food pantry patrons came regularly.

“On a typical morning, patrons begin showing up shortly after 9 a.m.,” Ridinger said in the release.

“And by the time the food and produce trucks arrive shortly before 11 a.m., the south parking lot is full of

several lines of traffic, sometimes extending out onto Annie Glidden Road.”

Tiffany McQueen-Lewis, director of grant programs at the community foundation, said DCCF is proud to be in partnership with Westminster to address “the overwhelming amount of food insecurity that has plagued the residents of DeKalb County as a result of COVID-19.”

“Westminster has done a phenomenal job getting food into the hands of individuals and families that need it most during such a critical time in our nation,” McQueen-Lewis said in the release. “It has been an honor to help this organization in fulfilling its mission.”

DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith spoke of food insecurity as a global problem.

“I’m so proud that the DeKalb community has been facing this issue head-on,” Smith said in the release.

“The collaboration between our nonprofit community, bolstered by governmental assistance, has resulted in a system where we’re all working together to make sure that folks in our vicinity do not go to bed hungry, and that those who need help with their nutritional needs have the resources to feed themselves and their families.”

OBITUARIES ROBERT E. SACKSE Born: October 11, 1936 Died: April 15, 2021 Robert E. Sackse, 84, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Thursday, April 15, 2021, at his home.

He was born October 11, 1936, in Ottawa, Illinois, the son of Herman A. and Lydia (Fraiken) Sackse. Robert married Nancy J. Grivetti on October 18, 1959 in Ottawa.

Robert moved to DeKalb in 1973 and worked as a carpenter for Paul Jacobson & Company and was Vice President of Construction for Harbour Contractors. He was an avid Nascar fan, he owned and raced stock cars. Robert was a member of the National Guard and served many years as president of the local Carpenters Union in Ottawa, Illinois.

He is survived by his three daughters, Melissa Sackse, Michelle (Greg) Perkins and

THE MIDWEEK Kishwaukee College recognized two outgoing board members at a recent Board of Trustees meeting. Roberta “Bobbi” Burke and Ken Doubler were both commended for their dedication to the college and each received a plaque to recognize their service.

Doubler, a resident of DeKalb, was initially seated on the board in 2013 when a position became vacant.

“It was a chance for me to give back, and also working with the college had been a passion for me since teaching as an adjunct marketing and advertising instructor for four years in the 1980s,” Doubler said in a news release. “My wife and daughter were both graduates of Kish too.”

Burke was initially seated on the board in 2014 and is a resident of Rochelle. She also spent time teaching at the college and saw a board position as an opportunity to continue serving Kish.

“As a past student and instructor at Kish, I was very interested in bringing that experience to the board. I felt I could offer a different perspective,” Burke said in the release.

Burke and Doubler both said one of their biggest achievements on the board was finding a new college presi-

dent in 2015.

“As a board, we could not have worked any harder at finding the right candidate to fill that very important position and one of the accomplishments I am most proud of is knowing that we chose the right candidate in Dr. Laurie Borowicz,” Burke said in the release.

Doubler echoed the sentiment, “I am most proud of being part of the selection team that hired Dr. Borowicz in 2015, the first woman president at Kish.”

During their time on the board, the college established dual credit opportunities with local high schools, built relationships with Northern Illinois University and other local community partners, celebrated Kish’s 50th anniversary, and assisted in guiding the college through the State of Illinois’ two-year budget impasse and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Doubler highlighted his work with the Kishwaukee College Foundation as an achievement during his tenure.

The lodge sponsored both events by donating $2,400 toward the food truck contents. Elk volunteers loaded each vehicle with pre-packaged boxes of food. More than 300 people were supplied much-needed food for their households. Elroy the Elk was also onsite to hand out Drug Awareness coloring books to the families and take pictures with those that wanted them.

The funds to sponsor these projects were made possible by the Elks National Foundation Community Investment Project Grants. Every year the foundation has grants available for each lodge to use to help their community. The lodge welcomes the community’s input on how to use the grants. DeKalb celebrates Earth Day with cleanup events

DeKALB – On April 22, 5-year-old Millie Shaffer visited Hopkins Park in DeKalb, not to play on swings or have a picnic, but to participate in an Earth Day cleanup event.

“We’re here to pick up garbage and help out the Earth,” she said. In addition to filling a bucket full of trash, Shaffer and her father, Travis, also found a large metal filing cabinet in the park’s woods.

Millie and Travis Shaffer of DeKalb were two of about 20 people who attended the cleanup event hosted by the DeKalb Park District.

Mat Emken, superintendent of parks with the DeKalb Park District, said the event celebrated Earth Day and “provided much-needed cleaning after the winter.”

“Over the course of the winter, trash blows around and collects in spots in the park,” Emken said. “In the spring, all of the parks need a good cleaning.

Northern Illinois University also held a cleanup event on Earth Day of both campus and the community. On April 24, the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Academy hosted Clean Up DeKalb in three locations: the Kishwaukee bike trail, downtown DeKalb and Prairie Park.
